foreign now I know where's skip where's skip so today is one of those crazy days I spent I don't know 45 minutes trying to figure out why I couldn't play back a VHS tape that was a little vhsc cassette and I kept trying trying I was having all these issues I tried different adapters I tried different decks and then I was like what is the name of this tape I look at it and it's all in Arabic and I'm like oh it's in pal format so that's the first thing then a client just showed up so everything's kind of all wonky and weird but thanks for tuning in I am skip Alzheimer and this is the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show and we just watched a 16 millimeter film about bone fish in the Bahamas and uh yeah I think that type of programming hasn't changed you know it's 100 years later it's still about the same way that you cover that that type of of thing of an outdoor sportsman show all right so the next film we're gonna watch is wild places Rocky Mountain Meadow enjoy [Music] let's go to a wild place and see what's there [Music] let's look at some of the things that live together in this wild place this Rocky Mountain Meadow here in the Rocky Mountains many trees grow but there are places where the trees grow far apart in between grass and flowers grow this is a metal high in the mountains here the trees on the edge of the meadow are short and twisted stunted by the strong cold winds that blow all year long even in summer when flowers grow in the meadow there is snow here there are many rocks in this Rocky Mountain Meadow the rocks help some plants grow they protect the plants from the mountain winds some plants grow together in clumps this is an adaptation growing close together like this helps plants hold in the warmth from the Sun and helps them keep from losing water for fruits to grow on plants their flowers have to be pollinated insects pollinate the flowers pollen catches on the insect's legs and is carried from flower to Flower by them many insects are carried up here by the mountain winds insects and plant seeds are food for the birds that live here a sparrow eats seeds and catches insects too for its babies The Nutcracker is able to pull seeds from pine cones the junko searches the ground for seeds and fruits but the horned Lark hunts there for insects in the winter when there aren't insects to eat it eats seeds that adaptation helps it live through the cold winter this Meadow is high in the mountains but the mountains go up even higher rocky mountain goats live on the rocky slopes above the meadow they eat mosses and any other kind of plant that grows in the mountains these goats can stand and move safely in places that would be dangerous to people their Hooves have soft pads underneath this is an adaptation that helps keep the goats from slipping off the rocks young mountain goats are called kids they always stay close to their mothers other animals that visit the meadow can climb the Steep Mountain slopes as the mountain goats do bighorn sheep come to the meadow and eat the grasses that grow there during the summer even though it's cold enough for snow to stay on the ground it's still warm enough for plants to grow and so there's enough food for the animals who spend their summers in the Rocky Mountain Meadow on the bare rocks above the meadow Birds of Prey like the rough-legged hawk build their nests and raise their young Birds of Prey catch small animals for food the golden eagle makes great soaring flights searching for its prey [Music] a mountain stream runs through the meadow birds called Dippers build their nests on the Rocks around the stream the nests are hidden in cracks and rocks they're made of moss and sometimes lined with grass and leaves [Applause] Dippers dive for water insects and other small animals that they eat or feed to their babies young Dippers can dive and swim as soon as they leave their nest this adaptation helps them survive but life is very difficult here few of these young birds will grow up to become adults marmots make their homes in Burrows or in dens under Rock piles marmots are related to squirrels they're a kind of wood chuck or groundhog they live together in small family groups called colonies one will stand guard if there's danger it will whistle and the marmots will run down into their Burrows or dens marmots have to watch out for Predators animals that try to catch them such as golden eagles or bears marmots are active only during the short summer in the Rocky Mountain Meadow [Music] they'll hibernate in their dens or Burrows during the winter sleeping through the cold weather a pica is another small animal that lives in this Meadow pikas look like tiny rabbits with short ears and no tails the Pica's color is very much like the color of the Rocks where it lives this adaptation makes Pike is hard to see pikas like marmots live in colonies they eat grass and collect piles of it to use his food in the winter but pikas don't sleep through the winter as marmots do pikas have a whistling call like the marmots they spend the winter in the meadow eating the grass that they've stored mule deer come to the meadow only in summer they eat grass and wild fruits cool deer get their name from their ears which are long like the ears of mules these deer are keeping cool in a mountain stream herds of mule deer move up the mountain from the lowlands wolves May sometimes visit this Meadow too they hunt the small animals that live here such as mice and pikas grizzly bears come here late in the summer to search for berries that are ripening the females come with their young cubs they have a lot of eating to do to fatten themselves up for their long winter sleep summer doesn't last very long in this Rocky Mountain Meadow summer is over now Autumn is here and soon it will be winter snow is already beginning to cover the meadow many animals will leave the meadow and return to the forest there the trees will shelter them from the cold winter winds these birds the tarmigans will move down the slope into the shelter of bushes they'll leave behind the pikas and the marmots here in this wild place this Rocky Mountain Meadow [Music] what a Monday so yeah somebody pointed out uh 1990. um it's one of the latest uh films we have in our collection but not the absolute latest I think we have one from 92 or 93 and I believe we did some research I asked a fellow archivist and he felt like 93 was the drop-off point for educational films being actually on film as opposed to video and that one a previous one was actually edited on video and then they did a kinescope where they aimed a camera at a monitor and shot the footage and laid down the soundtrack all right what do we got next so many things um Black History Month it's part of a series then tackle Peter Britannica did this is probably barely animated but um interesting nonetheless this is Bishop Turner black nationalist [Music] the scene presented in this house today is one unparalleled in the history of the world foreign this was a turbulent session of the Georgia state legislature in 1868. the speaker was Henry McNeill Turner speaking for 32 black fellow members because of their race they were all soon to be expelled from the legislature his speech was a passionate plea for justice a great question sir is this am I a man if I am such I claim the rights of a man we have pioneered civilization here we have built up your country we have worked in your fields for 250 years you have all the elements of superiority upon your side you have our money and your own you have our education and your own and you have your land and our own too you may expel us gentlemen but I firmly believe that you will someday repent it but after the next election in 1869 the black legislators were expelled from the house for good rejected again Henry Turner lost faith in America and began to dream of migrating to a black independent nation in another land truth had been remarkable a child of free Negroes in South Carolina he had many happy times but he worked as hard in the Cotton Fields as any slave persuaded friendly whites to teach him to read even though education for Negroes was forbidden by state law when he worked as an office boy in a law firm he continued his schooling with the help of several young lawyers Henry had a talent for leadership and public speaking along with his interests in history law and religion in the African Methodist Episcopal Church a large and active organization he found an outlet for his energy and talents the church was concerned with both the spiritual welfare of black people and with the social conditions under which they lived [Music] at the age of 20 Turner became a minister in 1858 he moved North to do Church work in Baltimore and Washington D.C and soon after the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed by President Lincoln to be the first black chaplain in the Union Army Turner was impressed by the courage of black soldiers and deeply disturbed by the Army's discrimination against them black volunteers 186 000 in all served for many months in segregated regiments at lower pay than their white fellow soldiers after the war Turner worked with the Freedmen's Bureau organized for the Improvement protection and employment of refugee freedmen Turner's buried career had prepared him well for His Brilliant speech to the legislature [Music] disappointed in his brief period in reconstruction politics and horrified by the continuing show of race hatred Turner became the spokesman of a back to Africa movement in 1878 the migration to Liberia began Liberia was an African state founded by the American Colonization Society in the 1820s the Expedition Turner said would take back to Africa with a culture education and religion acquired here this was the keynote of his African Crusade the American dream must be transplanted to the black man's ancestral home although the migration was underway Turner stayed in the United States a bishop in the church and a leader in the colonization movement in 1883 when the Supreme Court nullified the Civil Rights Act that had been passed during Reconstruction he spoke out in anger clearly outlining his concept of black nationalism this abominable decision he said made The Ballad of a black man a parody his citizenship a melody and his freedom it was God's will he said for black people to leave America as the Israelites had left Egypt and the pilgrims had left England [Music] black men could earn respect only by proving themselves capable of founding and Manning a government of their own creation till we have black men in the seat of power respected honored feared hated and referenced our young men will never rise for the reason they will never look up a democratic all negro nation in Africa Turner felt would give the entire black race a model for advancement [Music] for such a mission a limited number of civilized Christian Negroes perhaps a half million altogether would be needed for financial aid he appealed to Congress he estimated that the nation owed Negroes a moral debt of 40 billion dollars for 200 years of free labor although Turner's plan had some appeal for thousands of poor and uneducated ex-slaves in the South few black leaders supported him chj Taylor United States minister to Liberia reported that conditions there were degrading newspaper editor Benjamin Tanner said that for Negroes to leave America would be like running from the Sun for both light and heat Booker T Washington urged Negroes to stay in the South educate themselves and struggle to earn the white man's respect but after a visit to Liberia in 1891 Turner wrote that the black man there feels like a Lord and walks the same way the Liberian Exodus failed because it lacked money and because most Negroes felt that America with all its race problems was still the Negroes home but long after his death in 1915 Bishop Turner's ideas were a strong influence black nationalism was revived in the 1920s by Marcus Garvey who was able to attract a million followers today black nationalists are moving in different ways toward the same goal to control and shape their Destiny in their own way [Music] for many black militants today Bishop Turner is a symbol of the black man's struggle for equality and self-respect thank you [Music] yeah I wish that there was more money spent on this I just I think it's a it's a great film but you know it's like literally the hired someone to draw some illustrations and then just pulled the Ken Burns trick and just kind of pan across things uh let's see what do we got um so many films uh let's watch this one uh fantastic figures I believe this is so we we scan this for the Oregon archive um and I believe this is about arts and crafts in Mexico Joy [Music] laughs [Music] among the many Native arts and crafts of Mexico one of the most interesting is the tulae industry the making of objects outside the industry is centered along the banks of the real Irma and in towns and Villages near Toluca in flat bottom boats the artists gather the Reeds near the banks of the river our native boat Glides gracefully on past the stately Reeds that are so important to this unusual industry foreign after locating Reeds of a desired link men Wade in water hip deep to cut the Reeds at the roots after being exposed to the heat of the Sun for several days the reeds are now ready for scraping and shaving before they are woven into figures of fantastic shapes and sizes weaving the Thule read involves a skillful coordination of hands and feet overlapping and interlocking the figure slowly take shape the reeds are wet when in process of weaving thus allowing greater flexibility in molding and here are the fascinating figures that are the output of this industry a salute to the national emblem of Mexico let us hope this Frankenstein of reeds will not cross your paths some Dark Knight after the sun sets on the banks of the Rio Lerma [Music] the weaving of baskets also centers in the towns and Villages around Toluca where the industry depends on the stately Palm or part of its material palm trees are cultivated to furnish the leaves used to wrap around the regions [Music] stringing the Palm leaves into narrow ribbon-like strands is only one step in the weaving of baskets expert workmanship and skill mold the finished product [Music] there are baskets of many shapes and sizes popular as these baskets may be with the tourists they are made principally for use in the home [Music] wood carving in Old Mexico is at its finest when making molineos a hand-propelled chocolate mixing device cut from blocks of hardwood the Molino goes through several stages of manufacture all the work is done by hand even to operating the lathe used to turn the wood guiding the razor sharp knife into the spinning wood the crude piece becomes not only a thing of beauty but a very practical mixer and here is how it works by the same skilled hands are fashioned beautifully carved powder boxes decorated salt shakers candle holders and other attractive articles the art of furniture making has been developed to a high degree in Mexico especially in the vicinity of Guadalajara where this industry still flourishes [Music] with a sharp knife a few blocks of wood and some strong hemp twine these Furniture Craftsmen begin construction of a chair [Music] the different parts are made by different Craftsmen many more cut to order wooden supports needed for the framework [Music] these parts are then fastened onto the body by hemp rope [Music] piece by piece this chair takes new forms framework completed an armrest is fitted into position before the leather is stretched and the framework looks like this [Music] carefully the leather is drawn over and nailed onto the framework and when the chair is completely covered with leather it looks like this fine pointed electric needles burn the design into the leather [Music] thank you many of the artists engaged in inscribing these designs are women with Nimble fingers who operate the electric needles soon they will be finished furniture for madame one of the most important and widespread industries of Mexico is the weaving of serapis and Industry as old as Mexico itself carding and separating the wool is done much in the same manner as in days gone by so also are the spinning wheels turned as in ancient days when Han operated Machinery of this type was used to spin thread for the needs of the entire family [Music] winding the world thread on the spindles is a delicate and careful process the family loom in the home is often centuries old but always in good working condition back and forth goes the spindle of wool thread to weave the intricate designs that are so beautiful in the finished product foreign with each section of the Republic having a design and coloring peculiar to itself in the weaving of blankets and rugs the result is a riot of color and a variety of designs in this most interesting of all Mexican Industries foreign markets of Toluca is a delightful never to be forgotten experience [Music] the city of Puebla is noted for its tiles and pottery a visit to puebla's House of tiles will show us how this industry flourishes women with extraordinary ability outline the designs on plate tiles and pottery [Music] some designs are made to order especially for the customer [Music] the finished tiles are well packed for shipment to all parts of the Republic the United States and many parts of the world [Music] tiles are used to decorate doorways and fountains and archways among other art objects made in Puebla we find much beautiful pottery and enameled wear [Music] this little shop in Amazon is noted for its clay toy figures the expertly fashion little figures recalled Childhood Days and toys of clay [Music] rolling the clay into form and shipping is followed by molding and finally painting with brilliant colors [Music] and the result hundreds of familiar animals Birds elephants dogs deer hyenas and even Napoleon native figures and the village cobbler a clay Pig for your pennies and don't forget the monarch of the jungle you can buy them by the handful [Music] the soft wood of the trunk of the palm tree similar to balsa wood is utilized to Advantage by the expert wooden Carvers in this strange industry the palm tree is cut down and the trunk of the tree uprooted and allowed to dry under a hot sun sawing a trunk to its proper size is the first step in the process usually the workers cut the trunk into square blocks of wood after many hours of patient toil with small chisels the result is a masterpiece of wood carving craftsmanship with objects set forth in the minutest detail a village seen in miniature from Palm tree roots to creations of Fantastic Beauty by the Wood artist the use of the needle and thread is also a highly developed Arc in Mexico days of laborious and painstaking work are represented in this hand embroidery art a sport coat of intricate design and color made to order formulating foreign was cut and fitted for size before the embroidery was applied other forms of hand embroidery work are found in belts and handbags and beautiful tablecloths [Music] thank you near Guadalajara the second largest city of Mexico is San Pedro laquipaki only a few minutes from Guadalajara by bus or rail lockipaki is World Fame for its beautiful pottery [Music] the first step in pottery making is the grinding and powdering of the soft dry clay it's added to make a mud-like paste then on the foot-powered Potters wheel a vase begins to take shape meanwhile ashtray is for the tourists are formed from clay [Music] these are allowed to name the hot sun after the pottery is dry and before baking it is dipped in an enamel solution which gives the piece luster [Music] after the pottery is baked it is polished for hours and here's how it looks when finished the work of cutting the first design in the soft clay is most difficult to become proficient in this art one must start when only a boy and work for years and years before becoming expert vases jars and pottery of all sizes and shape come from the factories of Lucky Puppy these artists mold from play the most beautiful objects of pottery in Mexico [Music] these lovely Creations find their way to all parts of the world first being shown in these native markets where every conceivable object made of clay is displayed [Music] the absence of standardization has resulted in the creation of objects of much Beauty and great utility the products of the Arts and Crafts of Mexico are not merely curios but serve very practical purposes the skill of these Craftsmen has been handed down from father to son for Generations with each succeeding School of artists leaving the imprint of their own individual ideas of design and color on the native film and it's called Safety demonstrations on the bandsaw I I don't know we'll see we'll see how this plays out um it might get gory well I don't know we'll see anyways uh enjoy [Music] the band saw is designed to cut curved in irregular shapes like the example shown ordinarily it is not used for precise ripping or cross-cutting operations as the name implies the cutting blade of a bandsaw is a continuous band of metal tightly drawn over a pair of Wheels the blade travels up by the back column over the upper wheel and down around the lower wheel causing the cutting force to be down on the table guard should cover both wheels and all parts of the blade except that part doing the cutting most bandsaws have tilting tables to change the degree of tilt loosen the two trunnion clamps and move the table to the desired angle for most work the table is set at 90 degrees to the blade be sure that all adjustments and locks are secure before turning on the power in its travel between the two wheels the blade must be supported by an upper and lower guide as stock is being sawed the guides help prevent the blade from twisting and from being pushed back out of line the upper guide and guard assembly is one of the few adjustments generally required to change the height of the upper assembly loosen the lock on the back of the saw approximately one half turn and raise or lower the assembly is necessary be certain that the blade is completely stopped before making this adjustment this is the on off switch this size equipped with a brake turn off the power after using the bandsaw and apply moderate pressure on the brake until the blade completely stops only the operator should be in the operator safety zone obtain permission from the instructor before operating the saw and wear your goggles for eye protection the correct height of the upper guide should be slightly above the stock but no more than one quarter inch above the maximum thickness of stock to be cut planned sawing procedures other will be a maximum forward feed with a minimum of backing out of cuts at times it may be necessary to make a cut well into the stock and then back out except for short straight cuts the blade Must Be Stopped before backing out to prevent pulling it off the wheels when stock requires two cuts make the shortcut first then the longer cut and the piece will fall free as you complete the long cut if the cut is short and straight you may carefully and slowly back out of the cut with a saw running the extra cautious nut to allow the stock to bind and pull the blade off the wheel when possible cut out through waste stock rather than backing out hold stock firmly and feed it into the blade at a moderate rate of speed stock must lie flat on the table so it does not rock or wobble as it is being cut if small curves are desired we must first make many relief cuts to within one Thirty second of an inch of the layout line a three-quarter inch radius is the smallest Arc that can be sawed with a one-quarter inch blade and a one-half inch blade can cut as small as one and one quarter inches radius without relief cuts as we cut to the layout line the small pieces fall away rather than bind on the blade do not allow the saw blade to twist or bind while cutting curves [Music] keep waste from accumulating on the saw table clean off scraps with a piece of wood or a brush after the blade stops do not use your hands or fingers check your layout before cutting try to visualize what will be happening sometimes you will find that you have the layout on the wrong face of the stock and the stock would hit the column of the saw as it is being cut it may even make a difference which end of the cut is started first keep all fingers at least three inches from the saw blade foreign cylindrical stock like this without a special holding device since the direction of force of the blade is downward on the table the cylinder would tend to twist into the blade this often causes the blade to be broken many holdices and homemade equipment may be made and utilized on the bandsaw a B Block is often used as a special holding device it is commonly used to saw a shallow X curve in the ends of a piece to be turned between centers on the lathe or it may be used to rip or split cylindrical pieces keep fingers away from the blade as we feed the last part through it it is advisable to push the end with a piece of scrap stock some type of circle cutting jig is usually available so accurate circles may be easily sought they work on the principle of a pivot point that may be adjusted to the radii desired this circle jig has the pivot point above the stop many jigs have the pivot point below the stop all special setups should be checked by the instructor before turning on the power [Music] to resaw a reasonably narrow stock or cut it edge to edge we may use the rip fence it is always advisable to have your scrap push piece handy before you start to saw [Music] [Music] [Music] one of the best ways to resaw wide stock is to use a special pivot stand the widest blade available should be installed for this operation the normal cutting position for right hand operators is to face the blade and stand slightly to the left of it guide with the left hand and apply forward pressure with the right since there is no danger of a kickback on the bandsaw the operator may even safely align part of his body with the blade a helper should assist the operator when cutting long heavy or awkward pieces the helper merely supports the stock he does not pull or guide it tilt the table to the angle desired for cutting a bevel and lock it securely a fence may be used or you may follow a layout line cutting freehand if the blade happens to break step away immediately and shut off the power if possible without endangering yourself then notify the instructor and keep others away until both Wheels have completely stopped not allow the upper or lower guard doors to be opened the features of being able to cut free hand and to cut irregular shapes without danger of a kickback make the band saw one of our safest heavy duty woodworking power tool [Music] I can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] hey get down from there now [Music] hey turn it off [Music] what if it bumps that control by accident you'd be mince meat by now what have I told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well I told him not to touch anything all right I guess I wasn't thinking y'all weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety hair shake hands with Danger shake hands I used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger juice [Music] I was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my toolbox and I'll take myself a look I climbed up on a Dozier with my mechanic's Pride I said if you can keep it running friend while I poke around inside [Music] now they call me three finger Joe although I learned a lesson I forgot it soon enough the Nixon Burns and scratches show the young ones I was tough till another morning I was grinding on some steel my other hand got chaos and fed my skin into the thrill shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me [Music] mechanics burnout not soon them take a fall just to save themselves a minute I've seen them lose it all I've watched them caught in trouble seeing them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spent a lifetime with the Blues [Music] [Applause] [Music] Danger [Music] walk around inside [Music] [Music] [Music] walk around inside [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends I Used to Know compared to them I'm lucky to be just three finger Joe [Music] [Laughter] all right so that the last film about the bandsaw safety it uh it was very dry and it was not engaging and I think that shake hands with danger is an example of a film that looked at banned saw safety and said we don't want to make a boring film uh because what happens is people just tune out uh and so we want something that's going to engage with him that's gonna you know and so uh what we just played was a remix uh that a friend of mine did uh kind of a re-imagining of shake hands with danger as if sung by um riffraff in Rocky Horror Picture Show maybe with a little bit of a disco uh thing to it but uh the key is shake hands with danger is still being shown today unironically uh in shop classes at facilities where they work with heavy equipment because it's so good because it identifies it engages it's got a catchy song it's got some fake Gore so thumbs up uh easily one of the most successful uh educational films ever made so
