to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm films and that was a us information agency film about Tunisia and uh uh yeah and it was either an Arabic or Tunisian I I'm not sure but um I don't know if you saw there was that uh there's some Street shots where there's that hotel that's kind of that building that looks like um you know it's kind of like a trapezoid um that was supposedly the inspiration for the Jaa uh transport vehicle um because George Lucas shot in Tunisia a lot of the Star Wars the first Star Wars uh scenes on um I can't remember the name of the planet I can't remember it anyways um so yeah that's what supposedly the hotel was based based on or the transport was based on uh here's a film about our country's flag enjoy [Music] for hundreds of years banners and flags have been used by people as symbols of their hopes and ideals one of the first acts of any new nation is the adoption of a flag which can be easily identified wherever it is flown the design and colors nearly always are drawn from the experiences shared by a people during the period leading to the formation of their nation in each country the flag is a reminder of the sacrifices which went into its building and a reflection of the pride felt by its people in their history and in their continuing accomplishments the flag of the United States served such a purpose the red and white stripes and white stars on a blue field have been part of this Heritage since the time of the Revolution which brought American [Music] independence before the country became the United States of America it was made up of separate colonies which were under under the rule of the British as years passed the people of the colonies objected to some of the British laws and tried to have them repealed eventually the Americans declared their independence of British rule and fought to establish their own government during the American Revolution during the early part of the war many flags were used each stood for a colony from which soldiers came the New England colonies used a white flag with a green Pine Tree on it for the words an appeal to Heaven it was used by ships of the American Navy a rattlesnake a venomous snake found only in America was used as an emblem sometimes rattlesnake flags were carried on the new American warships which put to Sea in January 1776 the flag called the Navy Jack was also known as the American Stripes it was one of the first to have the 13 stripes since the the colonies had belonged to the British they had flown British banners on their ships in the early days of the war many of them continued to use flags much like the old British ones the Taunton flag which originated in Taunton Massachusetts was the same as the British Naval flag except that it bore the words Liberty and Union in his painting of the first real battle of the revolution on Bunker Hill John Trumble showed the Continental flag it is said the Bunker Hill flag was also carried at this battle no one really knows what American emblems were employed [Music] there the Grand Union Flag flew over General Washington's Camp outside Boston on New Year's Day of 1776 it was similar to the British Naval flag except that it had 13 red and white stripes these stood for the 13 American colonies the Grand Union was used on American Naval vessels Captain John Paul Jones raised it on his ship Alfred on December 3rd 1775 there are many stories told about who designed and made the early Flags the best known is about Betsy Ross according to Tradition general Washington and two other men called on Betsy Ross at her home in Philadelphia in June 1776 they presented her a design with red and white stripes and a blue field with 13 white stars the men asked her to make a flag from their drawing Betsy Ross agreed but she told the men that fivepoint stars were prettier than the Sixpoint stars of their design she showed them how easily a fivepoint star could be cut there are records that Betsy Ross did make some flags for American ships but there is no proof that she made the first Stars and Stripes all we really know is that the Stars and Stripes is the flag adopted by Congress on June 14th 1777 Americans celebrate June 14th as Flag Day in the records of the Congress of that day it says that the flag of the United States be made of 13 stripes alternate red and white that the union be 13 stars white in a blue field representing a new constellation even so the early Flags did not all look the same there were no rules about how the 133 Stars should be arranged the Bennington flag is said to be the first Stars and Stripes carried in a Land Battle it can still be seen in Bennington Vermont the first International recog of the official American flag occurred on February 14th 1778 the French saluted it on Captain John Paul Jones's ship [Music] Ranger Captain Robert gray was the first to take the Stars and Stripes around the world on his ship Colombia which sailed from Boston in 1787 when the Revolution was over the United States began to grow two more states joined the first 13 de Vermont in 1791 and Kentucky in 1792 Congress decided to change the flag to give recognition to these new States the new flag had 15 stripes and 15 stars during the War of 1812 this expanded flag flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the British bombardment it inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner this very flag that still waved when the battle was over is on display today with the Smithsonian institution on April 4th 1818 Congress once more altered the design of the flag by then there were 20 states in the union Congress voted to have 13 stripes alternate red and white to stand for the original 13 states there was to be one white star on the blue field for each state as new states were admitted another star would be added for each when the Civil War began there were 33 stars in the flag the union did not change the design to show that some states had seceded a new star was added for Kansas in 1861 and a 35th for West Virginia in 1863 [Music] as the years passed more States came into the United States by 1900 there were 45 Stars Oklahoma admitted in 1907 in New Mexico and Arizona in 1912 brought the number to 48 the United States stretched from the Atlantic Ocean on the East to the Pacific on the west and from Canada on the North to Mexico on the south the flag with 48 Stars served longer than other United States flags it did not change until 1959 when Alaska became the 49th state only a year later in 1960 a 50th star was added for [Music] Hawaii the Stars and Stripes with 13 stripes 50 stars is now the flag of the United States of America [Music] so having grown up in elementary school during the bicentennial boy did I learn a lot about those flags that was a lot of information that was passed around in books on TV uh PSAs films of course film strips yeah so I learned all that stuff back in the day so uh it's almost like spring outside um even though I know there's going to be a second winter blast that's going to knock us on our butt uh so here's animals in Spring enjoy [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] every year as the sun climbs higher into the sky winter gives way to Spring and the Earth all gray and brown brings forth new life even before the last snow has melted the early spring flowers begin to Bud and Bloom rain gathers in billowy clouds above the buding branches spring showers fall upon the land rain fills each Brook and stream rain and warm sun caused the red maple to Blossom spring is a time for nesting and New Birth one of the sounds of spring is the Peeper frog the turtle awakens from his long winter sleep at the bottom of the pond and comes up to the surface of the water to move about again the salamander too is worn to action in shallow water the eggs she has laid are hatching in the warm sun one baby salamander has already hatched in early spring some fishes come up from the sea to lay their eggs in Shallow Creeks often they come in great numbers bluebirds travel far from the south to build their nests so do the Robins in a nest built of and grass this mother Robin has laid four eggs oops she must keep them warm to hatch them wild ducks too have traveled hundreds of miles from the south to make nests along Northern Lakes this one seems on the lookout for enemies the Bob White Quail are building a nest mother rabbit already has her nest she has plucked fur from her breast the fur makes the nest soft and warm nearby a luna moth struggles out of the cocoon in which it has spent the cold winter now it finds a place to rest while its wings grow in half an hour the wings look like this now they're complete except for the trailing tips and within an hour here's the full-grown Luna Moth meanwhile a nest of tent caterpillars is hatching in a wild cherry tree each day the caterpillars come out to eat the leaves in a short time they could strip an entire branch of leaves but fortunately not many of the worms Will Survive now spring is nearing summer the quail has been sitting on her nest when she leaves we see the eggs well hidden from enemies above in a hollow tree a flying squirr looks out of its nest inside it has two young helpless babies to watch over the little Screech Owl makes the squirrel cautious but the owl probably is looking for a mouse or grasshoppers rather than squirrels so for now the squirrel family is safe flying squirrels don't really fly they have skins stretched between their front and back legs so they can leap and sail a long way a pair of Martin have their home in a hollow tree this Martin clings to the doorway while it feeds the babies inside by now the robin's eggs have hatched for many days the young will open their wide mouths waiting to be fed the eggs of the Mard duck are just hatching mother duck will keep them warm until all the eggs are hatched and until the baby ducklings are ready to leave the nest not far away a woodchuck stays close to her underground home while she eats a juicy root mother woodchuck is always on the lookout for danger here is a fox a dangerous enemy of woodchucks mother woodchuck plays safe these baby rabbits are staying in their nest while their mother guards them but these baby ducklings have taken to the water father and mother are close by to protect them in case of danger under the water other animals are living and growing this is a water beetle larvae such a larvae eats many small animals this one tries to catch a tadpole and this one catches a tadpole like the beetle larvae this Sunfish looks for smaller water animals to eat Sunfish babies have to look out for themselves this Pike is searching for smaller fish to eat this one will soon make a meal of the young perch it is caught in the Cherry Tree the caterpillars have grown larger but birds have eaten most of them only a few may live to build cocoons and become Ms the young robins have outgrown their nest and all but two all but one have left their parents will still have to feed them for some time we've seen that spring is a time of New Life some animals like the turtle wake from a long winter sleep some like the moth come out in a new form many birds travel long distances from their winter homes to build nests and to rear their young some animals like the ducks look out for their young until they can care for themselves while other baby animals like Sunfish must always care for themselves and take their chances with larger more powerful animals whatever the animal each must find food and protect itself if it's to continue to live and grow from Spring until [Applause] [Music] [Applause] summer sorry about leaving the mic on I got very excited I uh made some spaghetti and meatballs last night and um was excited to heat them up for leftovers for lunch cuz it is as it says right here a Geeks 16 mm lunch so I will occasionally get excited about eating something and forget that I'm supposed to mute my microphone all right so here's another uh baffling Christian film from the church church films um which I think it was based in New York and somehow made its way down to Albuquerque New Mexico and then came to Raleigh North Carolina so here's after the first enjoy for [Music] you want another cup of coffee about a half a cup radio says it's going to snow about 5 in the radio say snow probably be sunny you know he didn't sleep at all last night he's excited an important day for I I still think he's too young he's not too young he's 12 years old when I first went out there I was nine so you were nine things are different now you know he's not going out there with a school Chum you know I've been hunting before Nancy that party you gave him last night he enjoyed it was very nice but that was your present to him not mine today is mine all right but just be careful if you had your way we'd be up to our Nick and an rabbit Nancy rabbits are Road they eat crops but the only way you're going to find out what we do is to go out with us a walk in the woods will do you good no thank you okay okay okay we won't stay up too [Applause] long you going to be warm enough yep are you all set yep well let's go Okay Bye Mom stop looking as if we're going to war byebye glad to be out yeah [Music] the total thure of enemy dead for the week to 185 the Dow Jones Industrial Averages closed on Tuesday with a 3.09 increase Transportation down9 hey Dad yeah when you in the war did you ever have to what oh you never really know for sure [Music] [Applause] hey you got a good eye those are rabit tracks we're out here for hey great that's all right we're going to see a lot of them up ahead okay [Music] safety right here M and you keep it on all the time until you're ready to pull the trigger okay okay all right now usually it's a good idea to take your gloves off when you get a showell well you can do it soon you take a showell put it in the chamber right here lock it in make sure it's in there you take it from there and watch right in here you'll see it go into the see it going in now it's ready to shoot when you take the safety off okay you're going to have to have a Target let stump which one a there okay there you go [Applause] wow like that power yeah what' you think when it happened got a kick yeah how's your shoulder it's okay you want to try it again sure yeah when now okay [Applause] oh now you know what a 410 can do and it's the smallest of all the shotguns wow yeah they're bigger they do twice as much damage you ever sh a big one oh sure well you know I have one at home hey look wait a minute now I told you never to run with a loaded gun okay [Applause] hey did it your first shot you got him what's the matter two enough Steve Steve wait a minute I know how you feel I felt that way once come on you'll see after the first time it gets easier d [Music] [Music] sorry about the uh imagery of uh rabbits getting killed I I grew up where we had rabbits and um we killed them uh for food and for bur uh anyways uh so I grew up like I said in rural North Carolina and so first hunting day uh was an excused absence I never went hunting my father we we didn't have any type of firearms in the house uh except for a BB gun which I accidentally shot out a window with not practicing the safe uh handling um wow yeah so uh apologies but man what a great film that was uh in my mind one of these wonderful uh moral uh things uh all right so it is Black History Month uh and it's you know black history year in black history whenever anytime that we run across stuff that we think would be appropriate uh that just happens to deal with black history or culture we just show it because that's what we do is we show a lot of films but this one uh popped up this is uh Heritage days and it uh is a celebration 19 uh 1976 uh black academics and um folks decided to have a celebration of black history amongst americ American history and maybe this is where Black History Month came from so this is Black History uh Heritage days a black perspective enjoy three decades before the American Revolution Robert Harper settled on a point of land where the mighty Potomic and the surging shenendoa rivers met and forced a deep gash through the Blue Ridge Mountains there he established a ferry for which the future town was named eventually an industrialized Community was developed becoming an important arms producing Center and an important Transportation link between the Ohio Valley and the east [Applause] the fact that Harper's Ferry housed a government Armory was not overlooked by a man who was to make the city synonymous with the black American struggle for freedom in 1859 17 months before the Civil War the militant abolitionist John Brown staged a raid on Harper's Ferry he was caught and hanged but his name and the name of Harper Ferry became an inspiration and a rallying cry for the people fighting against slavery the importance of Harper's Ferry to Black History does not lie entirely in violent events in 1867 John stor chose Harper's Ferry to establish one of the first black colleges created after the Civil War as one of the earlier centers of learning for blacks stora College occupies a special place in the history of Americans of African origin in 1906 Harper's furry was the site of the second meeting of the Niagara Movement which was later to become the NAACP with such a background of incidents related to the movement for black freedom and education it is certainly fitting that the National Park Service in cooperation with the association for the study of afroamerican life and history and the Storer College Alumni Association presented at Harper fery National Historical Park Heritage days the black perspective the 3-day program of events consisted of exhibits well-known speakers Musical and dramatic performers and the dedication of the store room as a meeting place for the store alumni also the place where classes will be held all this brought some of the spirit of stora college back to the campus [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and going and it he so hard to it he I started out [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] I like many of the smaller black col Coles stora College was unable to Bear the spiraling cost of leaving its doors open but during Heritage days the closed College again became a center of learning for all in attendance the opportunity to represent the national Alumni Association of store colleagues in opening this General Session this morning the association for the study of afroamerican life and history is Ed for this opportunity to share in the Premier National observance from the input of black Americans from this place at this hour on this day we begin right after the American Civil War on these very very grounds that the first attempt to educate the newly freed blacks was begun and what a success story that was out of that early attempt developed store College an institution of Higher Learning that has contributed so much towards the betterment and enrichment of the lives of thousands of black men and women all Americans no matter what their age or color or their background resources or religion would benefit by learning more about the significant contributions of black Americans to every facet of the history and development of our great nation from the close of the American Revolution until the end of the Civil War the central issue in our national political life was slavery but there followed the Reconstruction period And it centered on National Discord of the entry of the American economy from the standpoint of the blacks who were to participate in our political life Lazarus oh as I don't you see real success is not measured by the level of your political off but real success in our capitalistic system is measured by how much of the economy you have influence over it is important for all of us to recognize and realize that we as black Americans have to continue in the struggle because it is our responsibility and our obligation to beath a legacy to our young ones for we can tell a great deal about where this country is going by taking a good look at where it has been politically economically and morally I was born way back there in slavery and it wasn't for me to realize my dreams of what a woman ought to be and to do that's one of the whole B back to slav you can't stop nobody from wishing you can't beat nobody down so low as to Rob them of they we it's been a long time and it's been hard but they nothing are done too hard if you just take a stand on High Ground like a dream and so from Africa we came we came to jamest town we came to Charleston we came in ships and came in Chains we were sold in auction blocks in the north and south of this land and we were worked to death feel the motion of [Music] the you feel the cold wind blowing by there are so many fish in the sea we we we weid on away [Applause] [Music] drummers uh lost their hands if they tried to make drums or if they tried to use drums uh before that that when we were in our motherland drums communicated all the information all over that continent which is at least 2 and a half times as large as this continent here during slavery the Carvers lost their hands they lost their eyes all because they were Carvers we had developed some techniques and methodologies of communicating ideas and feelings since we've been here we began to lose the sense of picking up vibrations through our optic nerves and through our hands and through our ears we'll look at a painting or we'll look at a piece of sculpture that a black person does or an African-American does and we will say we don't know what it's about we we will tend to hesitate to Define what that thing is [Music] as Heritage day showed Africans had other ways of relating information music [Music] monke yeah storytelling was one traditional method of communicating from tribe to tribe and generation to generation don't you want to with me come on yeah man with you buzzer took the monkey for a ride in the air the monkey thought that everything was on the Square the buz tried to throw the monkey off his back the monkey grabbed I'm tired besides I was here first and I will not give it up especially to a man when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus she sparked a movement to gain for every black man and woman the rights guaranteed in the 14th Amendment to the Constitution sometimes I'm up sometimes I'm down oh yes [Music] Lord some times I'm almost to the oh cor snck the nacp and the SCLC join forces to bring about the historic march on Washington a gathering of more than 250,000 persons who peacefully demonstrated their grievances in the capital of a cre world names like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X took over the headlines nonviolence escalated in violence I have a dream that one day every Valley shall be exalted every Hill and Mountain shall be made low and the right places shall be made Jews and Gentiles Protestants and Catholics will be able to draw hands and sing with the Negro in the spiritual of free at last free at [Applause] last we are free last there's a certain amount of [Music] traveling in a dream deeper there a certain amount of in a dream deeper what happens to a Dream Deferred does it dry up Like A Raisin in the Sun does it Fester like a wound and then run does it stink like rotten meat a crust and sugar Uber with a syrupy sweet maybe it just sags like a heavy load or does it explode [Music] [Music] [Music] the history of black men and women rising to protest the injustices and enslavements Have Not only brought about Liberation and a new life for us as a black people but in fact it has perhaps saved this nation somewhere in the shadows of Eli Whitney life I am sure there was a black slave who just got sick and tired of his fingers hurting as a result of trying to separate the cotton from the seeds who in fact duplicated the patterns and workings of his fingers in creation of a cotton gin the trail of freedom is a trail that is strewn with the blood and bodies of black Americans and too seldom do we give them the credit people will not stay oppressed forever and if there is no rational leadership in their oppression inevitably they will rise up there will be no let up in our demand for justice indeed we will have to accelerate them for we are fighting to defend human dignity and to put an end end to human suffering I pray that we may not come to the place where John Brown stood and felt that the cause had been abandoned by all except a handful I've known Rivers deeper than the ocean and wider than the flow of human blood in human veins my soul has grown deep like the rivers I bathed the new frees when Dawns were young I built my Hut along the Congo and it low me to sleep I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans and I've seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset yes I've known Rivers ancient Dusky Rivers my soul has grown deep like the rivers two of the great figures in the Abolitionist period in the history of the United States met in Springfield Massachusetts Frederick Douglas The Escape slave and John Brown representing different tendencies in the movement to free the slaves met and talked and began a correspondence Douglas at that time was nearing his break with those new englanders who believed that moral force and moral suasion would wear down the resistance of the slaveholders brown believed as he was to demonstrate here at Harper's Ferry that slaveholders had forfeited their right to live that slaves had the right to gain their Liberty in any way that they could Brown and Douglas met again off and on in the Years between until one faithful night August 20th in 1859 in a stone quarry near Chambersburg Pennsylvania Brown and Douglas met again Brown told Douglas his plan to seize Harper's Ferry to capture the leading citizens and to hold them as hostages Douglas was shocked but Brown persisted come with me Douglas he said I will defend you with my life I want you for a special purpose when I strike the bees will begin to swarm and I will want you to Hive them Douglas said no but his companion Shields green and ex-slave himself said I'll go with the old man the differences then between brown and Douglas are sadly still with us 100 plus years after the raid on Harper's Ferry it is not ours to argue whether we will be segregated or whether we will be a cast we are segregated we are a cast our problem is this how far and in what way can we consciously and scientifically guide our future so as to ensure our physical survival our spiritual freedom and our social growth therefore let us not beat feudal Wings into impotent frenzy but carefully plan and guide our segregated life organize in industry and politics to protect protect it and expand it what will be no one knows it may be a great physical segregation of the world along the color line it may be an economic rebirth which ensures spiritual and group integrity and physical diversity it may be utter annihilation of class and race and color barriers in one ultimate mankind differentiated by Talent susceptibility and gift but any of these ends are matters of long centuries and not years we live in years you hold a possible future in your hands only by thought plan and organization [Music] the [Music] I mean this is what makes America great right it's our diverse backgrounds and cultures that we brought to this country uh it is what we did when we in our past in this country there's so much uh you know in watching these films we realize there's culture this is a you know animals in Spring is it's about animals in Spring but it's also a little bit about the culture of the United States at the time and uh so we celebrate that when we watch films here at avgeeks um and so I appreciate you watching uh
