e is I I is is I is I hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and that was some footage that I found uh looking through a national archives uh film collection there's I'm working with specific things uh with a researcher friend of mine and uh that popped up and I was like oh man this is awesome this is amazing footage um and it's at the National Archive so it's being taken care of and there's preservation print of it and it's from different sources I think I I'm not sure where that ultimately came from but uh amazing stuff and you know it is Black History Month but I would say anytime I run across anything that's interesting uh featuring uh black history I'll run it anytime it's not just this month because black history is American history and so I um certainly want to honor this month but I want to honor that culture and history year round uh just like how we honor all the other cultures and histories the United States and across the world uh this one is uh straightup Christian film enjoy [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ the to God [Music] I h [Applause] [Music] oh boy um so I did some research the so the title was clipped on that film and um that film had some other issues too we can talk about but uh 1982 it kind of tracks 1982 um anyway so title was clipped there was that crazy uh tape splice it look like masking tape that uh they just taped together U and then there you notice there were like green lines uh right here um those were emotion scratches so what happens is when film goes through a a projector or through something like a viewer or whatever um you can get scratches and if there's black if there's black scratches like faint black scratches those are on the base of the film where the clear film is and that black is actually a shadow of light hitting it and then there's a little bit of a shadow and you can actually um clear those by using uh what's called a wet gate where you run the film through something that is usually hazardous to your health like a dry cleaning fluid like perk and what happens is when the light hits uh the the perk perk fills in the uh the gaps and so when light hits it it diffuses uh the shadow so you don't see those now emotion scratches are on the other side where the Emulsion is and that's where all the information the visual information is and what happens is something maybe there was a roller that was stuck or there was just dirt on a gate that just should have been cleaned but that scraped into the Emulsion and got down to Green now if it's super deep that'll get it'll be white but uh anyways that's vocabulary of scratches today all right here is a uh um I think this is about vocational stuff I'm not sure this uh came from a University of Northern Iowa that last film was from the church films Library all right so I'd rather be be a sparrow than a snail yes I would if I could I surely would [Music] M I'd rather be a hammer than a nail yes I would if I could I surely would mhm i' rather stay away like the swan that's here and gone a man is tied up to the ground he gives the world it's sad sound It's s a sound [Music] what would you rather be and how do you start deciding there are things you'd rather do but will they help you get a job [Music] project Discovery gives you an idea of where to begin it's a big help in learning to make your own decisions about a career [Music] too because of project Discovery you'll be better prepared for choosing work than your parents were or even than the kids who got out of school only a few years ago they had little chance for Exploring Careers to find the ones that gave the most satisfaction Works C at to downtown five and dime anything at all to help her pass the time my mama keeps a baby and Grandpa ravels on about the good times playing in his mind it's a hard life living when you're lonely it's a long night sleeping alone it's a hard time waiting for tomorrow it's a long long way home oh wow it's sure a long day at work when you're not doing something you're interested in or that you [Music] enjoy project Discovery is a new approach to Career exploration by not dictating a specific occupation it'll help you discover what you like best about a job and what characteristics apply to many [Music] occupations today people must be able to follow the changing Workforce to do that you need a broad idea of the kinds of work not specific jobs that you like best and for which you were best suited it's a guidance-based system that fits a variety of situations most of the package activities are done in the school setting but you will find yourself working with people in your community too kids in 20 other sites throughout the United States have already used the packages and made suggestions for improving them each package you explore has been developed by a person on the job in that particular field [Music] your exploration may also include field trips working on the job and community resource people coming to your school and just plain living [Music] your teachers and counselors are important to the success of the project Discovery program helping you learn to make your own decisions through exploration you'll have to decide which which work activities you like best and how they relate to your abilities and attitudes if you begin now to learn more about yourself and the world of work it'll be a lot easier for you to make good occupational choices later [Music] on your school has given an importance to Career Education by providing time space and real world materials specifically for [Music] IT project Discovery means finding a career Theme by looking at work characteristics instead of specific occupations you can make important decisions about the types of work you like best [Music] knowing your career theme will be most important if you ever want to change jobs or occupations so start now participate in Project Discovery and find out what you'd rather be I'd rather be your Sparrow than a snail yes I would if I could I surely nobody's going to know uh we got the record we bought it we have the license um but thankfully YouTube did not take that down uh because that was certainly John Denver it sounded like all right so this next film is uh two films that were together on a real I've been uh yesterday I uh spent a lot of time scanning stuff I scan like six or seven reels um and so we're seeing some of those today uh those the living Eucharist and I'd rather be this one was not titled it was just a real um let's figure out what it is enjoy Max [Music] gave me her promise true gave me her promise true and never wasn't I don't think it was considered a soundy uh something that would run through a panoram machine but uh who knows um and then of course some uh animation some fun animation uh set to music all right this next film Comes To Us by the Bureau of census enjoy [Music] hard [Music] [Applause] [Music] we the people of the United States in order to form a more perfect union we are the people the component parts of a giant organism the nation we sustain it we are sustained by it we move through it and we change it we the people [Music] America today has over 200 million [Music] people and it's still growing [Music] it has been ever since the first shiploads of settlers began arriving almost 400 years ago 200 years ago America was organizing itself into a republic of 4 million people a nation of farms and Scattered settlements and a few cities emerging on the edge of a vast [Music] Wilderness since then the growing population has spread across the continent in cities and towns from the Atlantic to the Pacific even out into the Pacific and North to the Arctic the framers of the Constitution were planning a rational and stable government for a nation whose future was for them a dream filled with unknowns but they counted on growth to maintain proportional representation in the Uncharted future they required a periodic enumeration of the population more than 100 years before the invention of the motion picture it was perceived that a sequence of still pictures could provide a sense of movement a way to observe a phenomenon that cannot be stopped for [Music] analysis colossal growth and movement for 200 years in America the principal constant has been change [Music] [Applause] every 10 years a detailed family portrait like an epic home movie the census is about us we the people on April the 1st 1970 we were 204 m765 770 in 1790 we were 4 million in 10 years between 1960 and 1970 we added six times the population of 1790 as a percentage our recent growth has been less than in the 19th century when during many decades the population increased as much as 30% yet with a large population base of 1960 even a lower growth rate the second lowest in history produced the second largest numerical increase for a single decade we are numerous we are growing we are moving each year one of every five Americans moves to a new address to the towns from the Farms from the small towns to the suburbs from the cities to the suburbs growth from migration and natural growth from the birth of babies converge in the urban areas almost all our growth is urban almost 3/4 of us live in urban areas in towns of 2500 or more in or near cities of 50,000 or more in our large numbers we are gathering [Music] together 1/4 of the people live in the 10 largest metropolitan [Music] areas growth and my ation patterns are changing the shape of urban settlements slow growth or loss of residential population in the central cities rapid growth in the surrounding urbanized areas more people live in suburbs now than in the densely settled cities we speak now of the metropolitan area the city together with its suburbs large Urban concentrations of population in these metropolitan areas the city limit is merely the line between one jurisdiction and another instead of the boundary between City and Countryside as the edges of the metropolitan areas spread out across the countryside several May grow together forming a megalopolis the largest of these jokingly called boswash joins several of America's oldest and biggest cities cities formerly distinct and distant from one another now form nearly 500 M of virtually continuous Urban settlement a giant super Urban complex home to 1 of the nation's population [Music] [Applause] la [Music] [Music] half the population lives within 50 mies of the shoreline the Atlantic Seaboard the Great Lakes the Gulf of Mexico the Pacific the people are gathering at the water's edge the American people are unevenly distributed nearly 75% of the population lives on 2% of the land unevenly distributed growing and moving moving to the urban settlements moving off the land in 1970 less than 5% of the population was living on farms about the same percentage that was living in cities in 1790 in the 10 years before the last census the farm population declined by 38% while the whole population grew by 133% fewer people are working the land to grow more [Music] food two fifths of the nation's counties lost population mostly farming counties a pattern spreading down from the northern border through the Great Plains across the South to the Appalachians while the whole population grew and the total rural population remained almost constant in numbers over 5 million people left the farms in 10 years or gave up farming for a living a slower Pace in the farming towns some of the towns are closing down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] the average farmer now is older younger people people with children are moving out of the countryside only half as many Farm children in 1970 as in 1960 staying put when others move when older people do move they turn their faces to the sun just under 10 % of the nation's population is over 65 in Florida more than 14% are [Music] elderly Go West Young Man young woman at any age go [Music] west the old tradition is a Modern Trend the West is the region of greatest growth [Music] the last sensus showed that California grew by 4 and a/4 million the largest increase in the nation capturing first place from New York since 1810 the most populous state in the Union [Music] helping to pull the center of population farther west the center of population America's human center of gravity the point at which a weightless map of the US would balance if an equal weight were placed where every citizen lived at the time of the desial census starting 23 Mi east of Baltimore in 1790 the center of population moved 700 M West and 60 Mi South by 1970 to a farm field near masca Illinois just short of the Mississippi River counties lose and gain regions feel the EB and flow of the unceasing change [Music] [Applause] 1,400,000 blacks left the South once concentrated almost entirely in the South today just over half of All Blacks live in that region and in the last decade whites entering outnumbered blacks leaving giving the South its first net migration gain in many decades the black population now is more evenly dis distributed among the many regions more concentrated in the central cities 44% of All Blacks lived in central cities in 1950 58% in 1970 in 1960 there were only three cities of over 25,000 with more blacks than whites in 1970 that was 16 the black population is growing slightly faster than the population as a [Music] [Applause] whole it was about 11% of the total population in 1970 [Music] people in motion always moving to the cities to the suburbs toward the water moving into the Metropolitan settlements many are moving toward a better life better [Music] housing the number of housing units grew at a faster rate than the population housing is less crowded the number of units with more people in rooms dropped by almost a million more single people of all ages are establishing their own households a 57% increase in 10 years the number of people over 65 who are maintaining their own homes grew by 3,800 th000 with more people living in metropolitan areas housing grows vertically the number of Apartments increased by more than 36% single family houses by less than 10% [Music] this highly mobile population has turned with greater frequency to mobile homes the greatest rate of growth for a single category of housing was 170% for trailers and mobile homes in 1970 more than 1,800,000 families were living in homes that could be moved [Music] we Americans Like A Home of Our Own 63% of all kinds of housing units were owned by their occupants in 1970 65% of white families own their homes 42% of blacks [Music] [Music] in 1970 the typical house was more expensive to buy and more valuable when selling than the typical House of 10 years before the median value increased from $11,900 to $177,100 43% in 10 years the median rent increased even more 55% from $58 to $89 [Music] an important factor in the median value in 1970 is the value of new houses one out of every four housing units in 1970 had been built in the preceding 10 years even measured in constant dollars the typical new house in 1970 was worth more than the typical new house of 1960 in fact the number of expensive homes is growing very fast in 1970 four times as many houses valued at over $35,000 as 10 years before onethird fewer houses worth less than $110,000 but the increase in median value is not only a reflection of the growing number of high-priced houses it reflects significant improvements and Rising standards in the homes of millions of us who have moderate or low incomes in 1960 almost 177% of all houses lacked basic Plumbing hot and cold running water a toilet and a bathtub or shower in 1970 only 7% of all housing units lack these basic facilities the change has been even more dramatic in the homes of black Americans in 1960 40% of all housing units occupied by black families did not have basic Plumbing by 1970 the figure had dropped to 177% in urban areas the races are almost equal the greatest change the greatest Improvement has been in the rural South increasing in cost increasing in value better housing reflects our ability to pay for it during a period when the total population grew by 24 million the number of people in the lwi income range declined more than 12 million to just over 27 million the number of blacks with low incomes declined but at the same time increased as a percentage of the total of all poor people now 28% of all people in the lowincome range are black 8% are of Spanish Heritage but members of these same minorities are increasing their proportions in higher income groups [Music] moving growing working and earning a Better Living [Music] the deenal family portrait shows that by the most obvious yard stick our Mobility is strongly [Music] upward in 1970 the median family income was which means that even after 20 years of economic growth change inflation and recessions the typical family has almost twice the purchasing power that it had in 1950 [Music] Americans are moving increasing in numbers more and more Americans are more and more [Music] [Applause] prosperous for individuals education has long been thought a key to prosperity and in a reciprocal pattern increasing Prosperity broadens educational opportunities children teenagers adults Americans go to school true illiteracy is rare today [Music] more people are finishing High School 52% of all people over 25 have a diploma in 1960 less than 25% were high school graduates the change is even greater among young adults between 18 and 24 an increase from 63 to 75% for whites and from 38 to 57% for blacks and other racial minorities more Americans of all Races are going to school and staying there longer college enrollment Rose from 3 million in 1960 to 7 million in 1970 these increases suggest that more and more of us will participate more fully in America's economic and Technical growth and that we will be able to sustain this growth and development our land our nation moving through time changing in many [Music] ways housing income educational attainment measurable changes that have an impact on the unmeasurable changes in the quality of our life our home movie our family portrait as no end the present is passing before the lens unexposed film waiting for moments Yet to Come still the land of promise always moving America We the People [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so we begin with a film that has a parade in it and we end with a film that has a parade in it that's the way maybe we should just do that we'll just
