e is is for for all is for is all this hi everybody this is Skip eler welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and that was the uh Space Shuttle Enterprise being slowly trucked back to its hanger I don't know if that is post um they B they did basically did a test where they released it off the back of like a a big Jet and then let it Glide uh back down I don't think there was any active um engines on there that they were just making sure that it actually would Glide and land safely and that did and uh Enterprise never went to space so and it seemed to spend most of it time its time on a highway so there you go uh let's see I hope everybody had a great weekend we uh watch old 16mm films and we eat lunch sometimes when we do this and I'm actually eating some eastern North Carolina style barbecue from Sam Jones barbecue which is in Raleigh which is the same people that run the Skylight in in uh outside of uh Greenville and one of the things that they're known for is this weird uh cornbread which doesn't have any Rising agent in it so it's just baked cornmeal it's uh it's an acquir taste but man I sometimes get itching for it but you know what I'm missing I don't have any potatoes we need some potatoes enjoy [Music] these are potatoes in Blossom an important crop and favorite food in almost every civilized country of the world including our own as far as it is known today potatoes were first discovered in the Andes Mountains of South America here they were cultivated by ancient Indians in A Primitive manner that has changed very little in a great many centuries the Spanish conquistadores brought them to Europe in the late 16th century British and Dutch Traders during the Golden Age of navigation carried them around the world by sea the British to India and silon and the Dutch to what is now Indonesia and then to the islands of Japan it was from Britain too that they seem to have come first to North America in the early 1700s today thly increasing demand for potatoes has made them one of our biggest and most important crops planting starts in the early spring potato seed s are cut sections of top quality potatoes the best of last season's [Music] crops specially designed machines put them into the ground adding fertilizer and covering them all in one operation by mids summer they're in full flour it takes a lot of water to make strong healthy plants like these killed by Fall frosts the plants have done their job potatoes are tubers that grow on the plants Roots Nature's Way of storing the nutrients that are manufactured almost magically from Sun Soil and Water harvesting potatoes is a mechanized operation too with a variety of machines them and methods used in various parts of the country brought to packing sheds conveyor belts move them quickly along the way washed dried and carefully inspected they're headed for the bagging machine automatically weighed they can be bagged in any quantity in burlap paper or net or in polyethylene bags like these [Music] whatever kind of bag you buy them in potatoes are for eating in hundreds of interesting and attractive ways at tables all around the world here at home potato salad is a tempting year-round favorite in Germany potato dumplings add zest to a hearty [Music] stew in Ireland C Canan is a familiar dish made easily from mashed potato and broccoli the Japanese Julien potatoes and boil them in soy sauce along with the variety of other [Music] vegetables in India curry sauce is widely used a popular and attractive dish is this one a curry of boiled potatoes and cauliflower one reason for their International popularity is their nutrients essential food elements abundantly available however they may be cooked to enjoy baked potatoes in half the time parboil them first in water salty enough to float them then after 20 minutes of [Music] boiling put them in a hot oven for 5 minutes more [Music] you'll have baked potato flavor and hold potatoes at their best when you serve them with a low calorie dressing made of sour cream and chopped [Music] CH for a simple delicious main dish mashed potatoes and make nests to be filled with any sauce preparation of eggs meat or fish these are being filled with potted [Music] meatballs and these with courage shrimp and [Music] PE for easy foolproof fudge add 1/3 cup of mashed potatoes to three squares of bitter chocolate and 3 t spoons of butter melted together in a double boiler mix well add 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 TPO pure vanilla extract and 1 lb sifted confectioner sugar knead until smooth and cool and press into a foil line cake pan turned out on the back of another pan you can cut it easily with a piece of heavy thread yield 1 and 1/4 lbs of delicious fudge made easily in a matter of minutes Outdoors as well as in potatoes provide the lasting energy of solid food french fries are always in order Mickeys prepared by swinging potatoes in a canful of hot coals are a Boyhood favorite it's fun to make them and even more fun to eat [Music] them wise Homemaker hostesses know the many parts that potatoes can play in the home simple or festive they belong on any occasion [Music] potatoes I was actually invited to a I guess it's a potato party where you have to bring something that is made from potatoes um ranging from potato tots all the way to uh vodka there you go that's that's my life is uh showing you films about potatoes and then going to a party where all the food is potatoes and then ice cream in lunch one the nearly three-year-old children are serving and settling down to their meal each is given as much food as he usually eats Larry doesn't seem to care much for today's dinner but his teacher feels he should eat at least part of it eat this much and then you can have the ice cream Helen doesn't happen to like today's menu either she reaches for her dessert no Helen first your dinner and then ice cream while Helen protests openly Larry patiently eats his way through his meal with a guarded glance now and then at the grown-ups who make the rules and now Larry can have his ice cream in lunch 2 we see another group of children just over two and a half John you usually eats quite a lot but like Larry and Helen whom we saw in lunch one he shows little enthusiasm for today's meal more milk John his teacher encourages him to taste everything but he takes what he wants because he wants it Psy likes dinner today she has finished and is off for another health but John decides he is through the teacher accepts his decision teacher regard as part of his dinner not quite a a nature documentary but uh fascinating nonetheless um I think it's uh similar to those work uh motion study time films that I've shown in the past where it's the stuff is shown a couple of times and then there's questions asked and then whoever's taking excuse me the training to do the motion studies they rate and then they're graded based on that and so I think that this is related to that but ice cream um so Calvin films was a big industrial filmmaker and sponsored filmmaker they made several films that we have and that we've shown a bunch of management films uh they made the ill- fated uh freeze in which was the poorly poor poorly uh made and edited Laughin parody featuring two members from Laughin uh to sell Kenmore freezers um and it makes you think like wow they really didn't get like a sense of humor but then they would do these amazing things like uh your name here and and this film dingbat story so you you watch it you realize like no they know what they're doing but man they lost their way with some of these films all right here it is dingbat story enjoy the titles of a motion picture have several extremely important functions they provide a few moments during which the audience can withdraw from The Real World before the picture itself starts they give the viewer a few seconds to adjust himself to the dark room and the screen image they force each individual to participate immediately and often the main title arouses the viewers curiosity the main title can do much more than simply State the topic of the film it can provide clues to the nature of the subject matter the title can suggest the treatment of the subject matter so the viewer will know what to expect and the title can suggest the attitude of the filmmaker toward his subject perhaps more important the title can reflect the diligence and Imagination of the filmmaker this inspires the confidence of the viewer and prepares him to accept what follows the title of course the title can also spell out in detail what the film is going to be about or it can be purposely obscure and intrigu Bing in one way or another the title prepares the viewer and gives him a mental attitude toward the movie he's about to see because titles are so important they are planned and executed with painstaking attention to detail yet occasionally something goes wrong oh that's terrible I just don't know how that slipped through you you mean you didn't notice it either until you finished making the print well I I'll have the boys make it over right away and I'm sure sorry another bad one and this one's a loot oh no now this is twice in a row I'll fix it ight this time huh the client's mad I don't blame him how could it have happened well we don't want to lose the account so uh when you do it over how's about throwing in a little something extra to make him happy you know surprise him maybe something a little bit uh fancier than he'd expect uh you know uh something to give the title a little wph start his show off right for him say no more we'll what can you do with the dean bat story but I just got to come up with something say say hey hey hey hey hey you guys come here I got a problem I need your help come on come on now now oh come on now this is an emergency the client is uh mad well come on come on I'm going to tell you I'm going to come on I'm going to tell you now look now look we've got a bad title again and the boss says we have to fix it up right to surprise the client huh okay now this is what I had in mind I'd like to turn out something uh extra special something to show the people now what we need is something really exciting to get the title off in a real good swirl huh come on now here now let me show you let me show you now look you take a square now what do you think huh great do you you think listen let's do a this maybe we do the little B com [Music] hey you want to see the first bunch of artwork yeah first we start with a black background then shooting backwards we scratch on this bat outline next we pan in this cell with ding on it and zoom it up to fill the screen we follow this by dissolving with a Ripple Glass to bring in a colored background then we use the flip lens and turn the screen over a couple of times now we want to use some live action in the background boy wait till you see these cheerleaders we're going to use these cutouts to map them in on the aerial image and the cameraman can do Freeze Frame and Skip frame to add variety then we'll dissolve in these backgrounds and color cells for a nice color effect we're going to use these cutouts to pop in the letters one at a time and then when they're all on the screen we'll zoom them up and split them apart we can spin the colored backgrounds and dissolve to the animation sequence say how is the animation coming along come on and see for yourself hey hey how's it going boy we got a great animation sequence let me show you what we're doing we decided to use a little bad character in order to make the title more appealing in constructing the Little Bat character I pulled his ears back but I felt by moving his ears forward it gave him a more darted effect but as you see the wings are too large so I shortened the wings and he just worked out great here you see me animating a little character but I wanted him to fly all over the screen so I made this plot so that I know exactly where each movement is but because he's moving in perspective I had to develop this little clay model you can see here the way he's moving around that I can use this to draw him accurately in every position the girls still have quite a bit of inking and pain to do but we've got the background all finished that is just great hey you guys are ready on the set hey wait for me will somebody tell me what's going on we're going to combine a live background with heartwork we have to take great pains to make sure the studio photography will stand the extra step of duplication the studio people are keeping the contrast low and watching out for bad composition the reason they keep re-shooting is they want to get a steady shot which will look good with with lettering over [Music] it the cameraman is getting creative but it won't work the best take will be the smoothest and [Music] steadiest on the animation stand the title is first shot in silhouette to make a mask this mask is combined with the picture for one exposure and then the letter are shot on a separate pass speaking of masks just for the fun of it we can make a Nifty transition from the animation to the live action by using a set of artwork masks here's the last scene we planed a real big finish let me show you how it goes we get into the scene with this animated beach ball it'll be over this background and we'll dissolve on this shape and the bat and then the tidle cell grows on I've got it all timed out for you here on the exposure sheet we've planned some double print title cells a lightning effect and some double print rocket bursts for a big finish boy this is going to be some tile now while you're winding things up here we'll have the music director get some good music and sound effects huh [Music] oh well you see how it moves I can't remember when I saw such imagination and such style that title just got here what do you say we take a look at it well I understand you guys been working pretty hard on this one huh it ought to be a regular little Jewel funny thing is the client probably won't even realize that you did anything different say this looks kind of long doesn't it now I hope you guys didn't do too good a job I mean we wouldn't want to set the clients a good example now would we they might want the same good job next time maybe we ought to just break off an end and send him [Music] that it's perfect just the way it is the best work we've ever done yeah gee that's a shame cuz as good as you say it is I'm sure the client won't want to use it how come he won't and make his show look good uh-uh it'll make his show seem bad by comparison and we can't have that but it'll set new standards for titling the world is waiting we've got to think of our audience well I know you want to do good work but you've got to wait until the people are ready to appreciate it until they're willing to pay for it but I'll let you guys decide okay let's roll the film [Applause] a [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] w oh [Music] la [Music] sorry about that I was across the room I heard I was expecting there to be a followup with the boss going like what but uh I guess not all right what do we got um let's build a tank together together we're going to build a tank we're going to take on those fascists together enjoy [Music] you [Music] a cornfield in 1940 today the world's greatest tank Arsenal with more than 10,000 workers on this track one mile long and built in a figure eight the products of the Arsenal are tested the Panzer Onslaught against the low countries in France saw the great French army ill equipped to deal with such an attack paralyzed and slashed to Ribbons by a new and terrible instrument the tank the rapid tactical move the deep envelopment and pursuit the exploitation of the Breakthrough old words with a new import the tanks moved 150 M A Day deep into enemy territory to the very heart of enemy resistance repeated the process day after day the speed of the tank makes defense against it difficult anti-tank guns cannot be moved into position fast enough to be of use the guns must be mounted on tanks of the same mobility and having the same protection as those attacking them to make an invincible Army we need machines trucks planes and tanks by tens even hundreds of thousands for these we must go to the assembly lines of the nation with the lessons of warfare in Europe plain to see a tremendous expansion of tank building capacity has taken place here in the Detroit tank Arsenal the world's first great tank Arsenal devoted entirely to the mass production of the tank we forged the armaments of Victory to wage A desperate War the immense resources of our industrial plant and the incomparable skill of the American worker have mobilized to meet a supreme test under this vast roof we create the rolling ports of armor steel the fighting tank with great Firepower fitting the American policy of aggressive mobile Warfare production in Factory and Arsenal begins far behind the assembly lines it starts with the machine from drafting board and planning room come models charts drawings Blueprints and Designs designs for the lathe to machine the rotor ring of the Cupa for easy rotation giving the tank complete allround firing range designs for calipers and micrometers instruments to test required tolerances for the greatest Precision is demanded here is the housing for the powerful 75s a miniature Fort having its own artillery to smash resistance as it blasts its way to the enemy rear the tank with its force and scope is capable of carrying on a small War all alone here the planers rough cut the wheel suspension on which the tank will be suspended the heat of the tool against the armored steel hard tough steel requiring good Machine Tools tougher than the material they Mill a thousand heavy automatic machines 8,000 tools gauges and fixtures had to be designed built in installed to get the tanks rolling and thousands of workers had to be trained for exacting new skills all paying willing tribute to a great tradition to the long recorded achievement of American gunsmiths Artisans mechanics to the tool Builders of New England New York Philadelphia Cleveland Cincinnati Detroit Milwaukee and the west from 1920 to 1935 around tanks were built in the United States these were all development or Pilot tanks made for experimental purposes the sudden creation of a vast citizen Army and the lessons of warfare in Europe brought a great expansion of tank building capacity but large as initial plans and orders were these have been doubled and quadrupled in the face of world conflict today the most advanced methods of industrial production the most modern in tool and Machinery design are joined together in an epic struggle to determine the destiny of free people everywhere again Precision is the watch word an error of a hair's breadth May mean the difference between life and death for seven soldiers who will be called upon to man this giant of Destruction teeth are cut into the cupula rotary ring motor driven the turret of which this forms the base will turn a complete circle a complete Arc of withering fire can be shot from the 37 mm gun soon to be mounted in it teeth two for the master gear cut into hard strong steel to mesh and drive the tank forward these lands speed and bite to the attack the modern tank is a complex mechanical Marvel making of it involves the utmost Ingenuity in correlation of manufacturing effort we are building uncounted numbers of these machines putting them to work to labor with free men fighting for what they cherish men and machines are the backbone of the Crusade to rid the world of tyranny the The Hope and promise of the future before actual manufacturing could begin plant layouts had to be made the necessary building space provided the proper tools and other equipment brought together materials requisitioned procured assembled all for the single purpose of making tanks giant multiple drills of sufficient weight and size to machine the heavy Parts boring dozens of holes in one downward motion had to be designed and built here are the gears and flywheels of the punch press in one of dozens of departments making Parts which flow to the main assembly into the finished tank the oxygen pentagraph torch cutting out the sprocket gears that will guide the caterpillar tracks these are cut in triplicate from Spring 1940 to the 1941 Battle of Libya was only 18 months but it was long enough for American mass production to fill our Army's first tank requirements and have some left for our allies now the waste metal sheet is removed the material will be reclaimed melted down used again the tips of the sprockets are flame hardened minimum weight is essential it increases speed gives additional mobility in difficult to High alloy Steels are used which are heat treated to develop their full strength the standard of workmanship required is high a vehicle must be built whose ultimate employment is the roughest usage a tank is expected to Traverse rutted fields and Tangled Woods Splash across unbridged streams have its full weight thrown upon itself 28 tons of steel hitting solid earth at a speed in excess of 25 mph and come through solid and steady and asking for more strength is the keynote and to guarantee that strength the master gear is oil quenched another oil bath assures the hardness of the white suspension arms unlike the average industrial plant evolved as changing requirements are met the tank Arsenal had to be planned down to the smallest detail but from blueprints to finished plant the job was accomplished in 7 months not only that in this brief space of time the first completely assembled tank was delivered to Army officials from hundreds of suppliers come steel rubber aluminum and Tin Hub forgings heavy Gear Drive Shaft pinion gas oil and electric gauges helical Springs electrical panels fuse boxes and meters from these vast stockpiles materials flow to scores of subassemblies reaching their proper places each at the proper time 10,000 Parts 20,000 parts 30,000 Parts 30,000 parts to make one engine of Destruction it begins to take form side wall and rear panel are mounted on the hole the tank has no chassis no frame only armor plate plate that furnishes protection from enemy fire and serves a structural frame as well overhead cranes support the great hydraulic riveters that meld the pieces by pressure alone dozens of Tanks go together at one time rolling from stage to stage on three production lines The Shield the four part of the tank heavier plate armor than that of a destroyer to make a land Battleship a roaring plunging vehicle of death a weapon come of age taking its proper place beside the airplane and the naval vessel and here is the turret for the 75 mm Cannon the wheel suspension later come the insulation the operating levers Transmissions oil and gas tanks electric wiring and piping instruments the crane hoists the completed hle moving it along the line where it will gather strength power drive the final drive built to withstand the shock of enemy Fire Smash whatever obstacles it meets the greatest Precision is necessary to meet required tolerances there can be no shims in fitting the engine supports no mechanisms attached to the armor plate the power plant a radial type air cooled airplane engine the force of flying horses hits to the Earth so that this weapon can run swiftly to the attack again the final drive an instrument of terrible punishment but Wars are not won by absorbing punishment they are won by giving it to the opposing forces the engine fits into the rear of the machine taking up surprisingly little room here is the pent up force that will plunge the monster headlong into battle to deliver for its staggering blows the 37 mm motor-driven revolving turret a fortress swinging a complete circle of raking fire destined soon to shelter men steel and Shel to hurl at the Tyrant fo here the claws of Steel UNC oil the Caterpillar Track rubber Treads vulcanized on steel plates the development of the Caterpillar track is one of the essential mechanical advances that made the modern tank possible it lies open on the assembly floor waiting to draw on the huge body it will supply sufficient traction to enable the machine to operate over the roughest terrain the Giant's legs the bogy wheels alignment on the final assembly line is maintained by letting these wheels run in a Groove track on the floor of the shop the wheels run onto the Treads a machine full grown at last ready to roll off the front of the line under its own power ready to pull the next tank into place without a moment's pause 30,000 separate part Parts covered by nearly 6,000 drawings go into the making of This backbone of the army striking power an American concept an American accomplishment representing the best integrated experience ability and intelligence of American industry and the American Army the 75 mm Cannon adds to the tank a weapon capable of firing high explosive shells shrapnel and smoke shells it furnishes direct light artillery support for tanks and other mechanized units making a fearful dread knot of Destruction a Rolling Fork to challenge the [Music] aggressors massive steel turrets mount a 37 mm gun hurling armor-piercing projectiles adding still more power deadly on the ground deadly in the air when used for anti-aircraft work the final inspection line here the working parts are tested for faulty application there's no room for mistakes picked up in the air and started toward its final destination the lives of men and the fates of Nations suspended in the balance the Arsenal's task is done the tanks are combat ready production now is not a promise but a fact gigantic real a solemn answer and a pledge the pledge of minds and hands of men who of a special kinship with machines production is a line of battle and production's battle line must drive [Music] ahead to make certain there's no faltering along this line every civilian plant that can is being converted for the production of War material and more and more factories are scheduled for production uction the tank is bolted down covered with a tarpulin ready for [Music] shipment shipment to Asia to Africa to the Middle East to the ancient Fields of Europe to the far-flung shores on which embattled allies stand [Music] when the final piece has been applied the tank goes through a 65m operation test made by inspectors of long experience men who can detect unusual noises even above the normal Rumble inside the machine and ordance test of 10 miles follows before the tank is finally accepted night and day this work goes on here as in thousands of other factories throughout the country toiling ceaselessly to produce the instruments of Destruction for a nation in the grip of Total War the Detroit tank Arsenal is only one of many great plants turning out the medium tank a series of Transformations from corn fields to arsenals M factories to humming production lines has been going on more and more factories are scheduled for construction as the vast plants and experience of the automobile industry are converted from peace time manufacturer to the pressing needs of these Grim [Music] hours for Knox headquarters of the armored forces of the Nation on practice field simulating actual battle conditions these fighting tanks charge through their Paces here thousands of soldiers learn Gunnery as our troops trained for action and new equipment rolled off the production line each day new Strength is added to democracy on this great range our tanks are spitting Steel [Music] strong men will see them through and where these tanks go there soon the Earth will tremble [Music] I love me some assembly line footage even if it's for uh a weapon of mass destruction all right thanks everybody for tuning in today very much appreciate your eyeballs and your comments Jeremy thank you
