hello everybody this is Skip Alzheimer and this is my very good friend Sid hi um we are a Milwaukee and Sid let me stay at her house uh and we are longtime friends and you seem to just be on the periphery like kind of she has an entire face and body although she's not letting you see it uh we knew each other since college and we have been friends ever since and she I used to stay with her in New York every year all the time it was great it was a really amazing time Kim video we used to go to pocalypse poo my personal favorite yes um and that I mean that launched me on the journey to bring Kims back to to uh New York and uh and I where I found that copy of Apocalypse poo that we actually rented you still should have stole it but yeah yeah well I wanted other people to potentially rent it um and watch it on VHS uh anyhow Sid knew me before I collected film I did I did that I think you did that after college didn't you start doing that after college yeah yeah I sure did um and I didn't think it was going to be something that would last I thought it was something that you just were sort of like well I'm just going to start collecting films now and it lasted forever well cuz you saw me collect other things yes like you I think you were the reason that I was getting into Santa Claus like for some reason I can't remember why but I really got into collecting Santa Claus stuff and then I had like a Santa Claus suit made for me and then had another one and I have like two or three Santa Claus suits are you still getting a picture taken with Santa no no I that stopped a long time ago that was that got I think the last one I did is when I graduated from NC State okay that I had my graduation picture with him where he's Santa is passing me I'm in my cap and gown and he's passing me my diploma um what did he think when you asked him to do that was he was he like like was he like that's awesome yeah he thought that was awesome and he was like can you take a picture from me too he wanted a picture of it as well there was did you ever get the same Santa twice like where oh there was a time I was going to the same mall and going to the same Santa and uh we were doing I would always set up weird scenarios where like he was berating me or I held up one a sign that said naughty um but he just didn't he was very lackluster so I had to go to another Santa yeah you know it's important to get the right Santa yeah exactly so Sid's been there the whole time and we found out we're we're Forest doll babies both of our dads were on the forest doll they sure were uh and that was yeah we didn't find that until much later but um yeah so I love my Sid McCain I Love You O and I'm like I am so short compared to him I'm like anyhow uh yeah this one of many people I'll be talking to but she is in Milwaukee in what radio station wmse tune me in Wednesdays 12:33 ship ship where did that come from skip is going to be on today I'm so excited to interview him it's going to be neat I'm excited awesome thanks hello everybody it's late um I just had a very long Wednesday where I did a radio interview with my friend Sid McCain on her radio show I did a presentation about YouTube and then uh I did a screening about uh clowns and their nightmares so I'm spent I'm in the bed here at the hotel room but I had to introduce uh the show today being Thursday um today we are going to watch two films first one tragedy both films deal with uh young adults and teenagers going down the wrong path and this first one is tragedy or hope which is about uh kind of the rebellious Spirit of some teenagers um who were set straight by some historical figures the next film is a police training film about goofballs and tea this is a ludicrous film I'm very excited to show this uh and it's about the drug scene uh Circa 60s yeah I think so looks like mid-60s but uh it's in a wonderful cautionary tale and it's filled with loaded and uh outdated lingo and I kind of wonder if there ever was a time that they Ed some of the lingo that's in this film but um yeah uh please enjoy the film uh I had a wonderful day today I uh being at the conference and all that and uh wonder what life would have been had we taken the other way let me introduce the three of us this is John Smith honor student football star Vietnam veteran yet somewhere along the way he chose the road to Anarchy and self-destruction this is one of his ancestors Jonathan Smith who gave his life for his country back in 1776 I am Sam Harden history Department this University it isn't often we get a second chance in life a chance to go back and take the other way let's see if we can work out an allegorical second chance for John Smith and incidentally see what we can come up with for ourselves will it be tragedy Our [Music] Hope to go back away ways back to when John Smith came in here tonight we had reason to think he was here to protect the valuable medical books from the riers imagine the shock when we find he's really here to let the riers in now why should a normally decent normally intelligent young person like John Smith choose the road to Communism Over America and freedom for one thing our youth of today are the object of the most extensive intensive diabolical campaign ever conceived organized and directed by our and their worst enemies on many of our nation's platforms radical speakers make a well-paid living going around many of them subsidized by the communist telling our young people what's wrong with North [Music] America on such a platform we have seen many self-proclaimed Communists and revolutionaries radical spokesmen for various groups and professions and sometimes even prominent political figures all joining in a movement with which the subversive Communists plan to destroy [Music] America and why do so many of our young people fall for it some of it of course is mass hysteria not stopping to think things through not stopping to analyze the character or the motives of who's talking a typical line from such rabble rounds this is if America don't come around America should be bre down why do they swallow a line like this well they think they want to be different they want to do their own thing lead their own life which too often means wreck their own life you it is true there are things wrong in this country there are social and economic inequities they are being leveled off more and more all the time but not by scenes like these and not by our friend John here so far in fact he's a prime example of what's wrong today to begin with he's a victim of irresponsible parentage he has missed the stabilizing influence of a good home and religious upbringing he has been listening to the wrong people he has gone in for drugs loose morals and wanting destruction he blames it on what's wrong with America well maybe it's time some of us should start reminding him what's right with America what's going on here oh excuse me Johnny I I was just um I just can't get over it when I think of the tall candles we had and and now this electrcity electricity that's what I say this electricity and all the other things you got I'm glad I come back to see him like I told you we've been hearing things in the spirit world and how this country's going to predition in a hand basket well now that I see what our country has become in spite of her shortcomings well I might be oldfashioned to say this professor but uh that g it Johnny I'm going back to being proud of America and just ignore the things that are wrong right I didn't say that you're not listening to me no but that's part of the attitude Jonathan it's part of being the radical I mean even in your day you must have heard there's none so blind as he who will not see and none so deaf as he who will not hear yeah I I suppose so well our friend John here your descendant in that one sentence he has Illustrated the two basic tenants of being the true radical he takes what you say and then deliberately he twists it around and then he accuses you of doing the very thing he's doing himself he is don't listen to him he's only trying to confuse you he is just answer me this now he didn't say this but let's suppose he had you imply that it's wrong too to ignore all the things that are wrong in this country well of course it's wrong all right then why isn't it just as wrong to ignore what's right in America because there's more wrong than right oh no come on now look you've got a notebook there just make note of some of the things that are right H all right now how do you judge a country where should we begin maybe we ought to start with the number of people that want to move here compared to the number of people that want to get away h remember there are no walls or barbed wire to keep people here who don't want to stay I've noticed even the ones who complain the loudest don't want to leave compare them with the millions who want to get in every year people risk their lives to escape other countries hoping to reach America many Die Trying and why do they think it's worth risking their life to get here Freedom that's the answer and the highest living standard in the world not for everybody not in the slums and the ghettos on the contrary it's one of the harsh realities of life that every country has its different levels of subsistence but bracket for bracket even the poorest here live much better than their counterparts anywhere else in the world to have good living conditions you have to have good working conditions both in and outside the home we have the best working conditions both places an infinite variety of Home Appliances furnishings and services to make housework immeasurably easier on the farm and in the factory the number and variety of power tools ingenious machines and labor saving techniques make the job so much easier for the working man now what does all this add up to look here we are we make up 6% of the world's population and yet we produce more than 50% of its manufactured goods our little 6% right here produces as much as the rest of the world combin now isn't that remarkable the average American citizens living standard measured in in wealth and purchasing power is twice that of the average citizen of other countries three times better than most countries and four times better than Russia now doesn't that begin to tell you something sure if you want to make measure Greatness by purely selfish materialism sure all right then how do you want to measure it well there are other values you know now wait a minute just a minute what's wrong with this type of materialism I mean it's the difference between life in the jungle and life in Civilization and what other values are you talking about anyway cultural ethical yeah among others well it's materialism that Fosters those values among others materialism provides the money with which we can build and equip the most schools the most churches the most hospitals the most libraries and the most research centers and ask for being purely selfish John John come on use your intelligence you know that the Communist line is based on the big lie they pull off some fish indefensible act against a helpless Nation or individual and then they shout down World criticism by pointing at us and calling us capitalist aggressors for example they suddenly attack Hungary America protests whereupon they accuse us of imperialistic provocation or another example there's an earthquake or other catastrophe perhaps in a communist country because Americans believe the Cry of a child is as pitiful in a communist land as anywhere else we rush great stores of medicine food and warm blankets to the stricken area what did the commies do they remove all USA identification and replace with communist labels before Distributing them then set up the hall that America is selfish for not helping more when the plain fact is America is the most generous country on Earth through our churches American Red Cross care packages and the government itself we have provided foreign aid to more than a 100 countries running into countless billions the United States has given more to needy Nations including communist countries than all the communist countries put together have given to other nations throughout all time now sure of course they're going to say that we're selfish that's the way they operate and others just parot the Communist line on the other hand outright gifts are only one way America AIDS other nations as we constantly raise our standard of living the spin-offs raise standard of other countries America is the world's greatest inventor and perfector now Jonathan here seems to like our electric lights I surely do but then I like everything I see well I think that makes a very good example I said we were inventors and perfectors now we didn't invent electricity but the basic facts of electricity were known some 2,000 years even before there was in America by scientists in Greece and in England and in Germany and for 2,000 years nobody knew what to do with it it remained for Benjamin Franklin to harness it and his inventions were the basis from which later Americans invented and developed the electric light in the telephone InterContinental radio Motion Pictures Television and so [Music] on other Americans have given the world the automobile steam ships trains planes refrigerat ation and the mechanized Home factory and farm and most of the medicines now used around the world again some of these were known or at least suspected in rudimentary form but it remained for America to really develop them and give them to the rest of the world to enjoy and mind you John America is only 300 years old really just 200 years old as a nation and yet these 200 years largely due to America has seen the development of man kind as a whole increased astronomically over all the thousands of years before that put together now tell me John what do this country have to do to rate your respect and admiration uh may I say something sure well it's done me a sight of good coming forward in time like this to see all how wonderful things have turned out but I wish I could take your back with me back in time back those 200 years when we were stattin as and Nation I wish you could have seen this country then how it was pretty wild but pretty all woods and streams and Hills and Valleys with patches of Little Farms at first most of us lived on farms because homes were scattered each family was closer together and because we lived so close to the land close to the seasons and growing things well maybe it it helped us feel closer to God oh it was back breaking work farming those days when I see how farming is done today it's hard to remember our first scratchings of the Earth with the end of a stick you just can't believe how much easier it's made the work all over the world because of mechanization in this country only 5% of our people Farm anymore yet the nation is the best fed at ever was and we Supply a lot of food to other countries of course while better farm tools solved one problem they raised some new ones too Farm Workers were free to go into other kinds of production and another production was sure needed but how could they go travel I mean that's right no highways no but there were waterways oh hey M I'm interrupting something I hope Jack ah there you are Jonathan gentlemen this is Jack Captain Jack Smith this is uh professor ah Professor hello Captain is this himself it is here's another one of your ancestors Johnny Captain Jack Smith whato Johnny oh kind a fine broth of a lad is Bora Johnny we could have passed for twins couldn't we now except for me Irish mother who gave me this red air you're John Smith no no 200 years before me he was I'm Captain Jack uh Captain Jack was with rabbit Fon were you the captain of The Claremont no but I was a barded toot Fon and I grew up together toot well that's what we called him us Pennsylvania farm boys oh toot was all the time dreaming up something I I I mind the time he was 13 he he fixed up a Paddle Wheel to our fishing boat so we wouldn't have to row it we he'd sit in the stern and go with then later he dreamed up the steam boat in a way of course there have been boats ever since Noah Ark the principles of the steam engine were known in Greece over thousand years ago and never developed or even the two things thought of together no no no not kill America that's right cuz you see Johnny in America well people have always been free to dream and to work to make the dreams come true a lot of American inventors worked on the steamboat there was the Fitch and Stevens and ramsy in Livingston of course some of the some of the boats weren't much bigger than Ro boats and it was a hard time they had gone more than three miles an hour a Green Mountain boy could walk faster than that if he could find three miles of open ground Bolton designed a special boat with a special engine we run it from New York to Alban and back 32 hours up 30 hours back but the round trip M was nigh on 300 mil and that's something a steamboat had never done at all before so that's why truth fton gets credit for the first Steamboat that was the Claremont sure but her full name was Katherine of Claremont Katherine was the name of Fulton's wife and uh Claremont was the name of her Papa's Farm you see uh he put up part of the money oh people forget things they forget all the other things that Fulton did to advance water travel all over the world you see the way he saw it in this new Wilderness land it was a heap easier to build waterways than highways while he dreamed up a system for making Rivers more navigable and tied them together with canals indeed he he even invented the first Power Digger to re Out Rivers and dig canals he planned the irie Canal from the Hudson River to Lake Erie one of the first real steps in pushing this nation Westward and did you know he built 15 more steamboats including the ritan and the New Orleans that opened up power shiing up and down the Mississippi now the New Orleans that's the one I was Captain of oh and he worked in Europe too didn't he oh indeed he did he helped several countries with their River and Canal systems so you see Johnny America was still young not much older than you are now already she was helping other countries and she's been doing it ever since and I don't need to tell you what better getting around means for Any Nation if this nation had done nothing else she's Justified her Destiny by developing power transportation for the world water land and air and remember all this in little more than a century a hundred years why that's no time at all when we can trace other civilizations back 10,000 years in a little more than 100 years this nation has given the world the steamboat and then the railroad and then the Model T oh don't tell me Smitty hello Smitty meet professor haton professor this is John Jeremy Smith but you call him Smitty pleased to meet you Professor nice SMY and that young fellow over there is uh grandfather were you you remembered you couldn't have been what was it seven or eight when I died eight but I remember good boy Johnny now uh what's this all about Jonathan well we were just reminded him of what it was that made this country great who Johnny I know him he's my own flesh and blood well he's as too just a few Generations removed well then why don't you save your breath for them young scalawags out there on the campus have you seen what's been Milling around out there oh we've seen them that's why we need Johnny's he and people like him H why don't you say so now where are we at well we were talking about America's contributions to the world in materialistic ways just a few highlights talking about invention and transportation and that's when you chimed in with your friend Henry and the Model T well uh we never called him Henry yes I work for Mr Ford close as anyone for a spell I guess he's a fine man I always thought Henry Ford was about as American as you could get he was raised on a farm he knew what it was like to work for a living he grew up in a home with religious principles yes and when he married Clara they uh they raised their children the same way and so do their children true and while Mr Ford didn't make the first automobile he probably did most to start the automobile industry well he did in my book old model T was the first what you'd call a practical automobile one the general public could afford he also developed the moving assembly line another American invention one and other countries are now using assembly lines not only made to work easier The increased efficiency raised wages but Mr Ford didn't have it all his own way very long the competition found ways to make better cars how did Mr Ford react to that well he he just put his mind to it and built a still better one and that's the way it's gone on back and forth ever since that's the way American free enterprise Works isn't it exactly it's the greatest economic system known to man it allows you to take the greatest good and bring it to the greatest number our enemies say that we're materialistic we are we provide material benefits that make life better and longer and not just for America but all over the world I wish I could say we were completely unselfish but I can say this we are the least selfish Nation on earth now is that wrong our enemies say that we're capitalistic we are but you need Capital to build schools and hospital and Industrial plants to lighten labor the last time I was in Detroit I was in the Ford plant it could have been General Motors or Chrysler but it was Ford I saw a huge press stamping out fenders and I asked the foreman how's it operated he told me the man pushes the button and the conveyor carries them away well how much does it machine like that cost half a million dollars just one machine just one of course not many machines cost that much money a piece but in all American Industries Nationwide the average cost of power tools and equipment and inventories was more than $355,000 per worker Now American industry has put up that Capital so that they can produce more and better Goods less laboriously and in a competitive market so that more people can enjoy more and better products now that is the American capitalistic system is that wrong no then what is wrong that's wrong we got to go out there and put a stop to that foolishness you think we can do it or W well we'll never know till we try you're not alone I thought for this country once I can do it again I may be a spirit but this Old Musket solid enough those this cson bar p sorry this is the best I could find it's a little crooked but I'll straighten it out on somebody how about that doctor that's quite a family I'm from huh yes and it's quite a country they've helped build folks [Music] yeah wait a minute fell what's the matter Johnny you giv me something better in this we've had it all along we just haven't been using it enough I'm going to go out there and tell them what's right with this country that's still our best weapon when detractors start on what's wrong we're going to counter with what's right with America it may make the difference you know between Today's tragedy and our hope for the future let's try it huh la [Music] n [Music] la [Music] a this is a story with many facets very twisting side channels lead to the central core and current often it is considered a city story but this is a misconception for parts of it frequently reach into small towns and Villages this is a story of a problem that knows No Boundaries it's spreads Beyond City Limits and county lines it crosses state borders without discrimination and parts of it stretch past the boundaries of our own nation into the vast intangible areas of other [Music] countries thus part of the story is here and sometimes seemingly disconnected apparently having no relation to other parts of the story another facet may show itself here and another side may be here and still another part [Music] here yet as seemingly independent as each episode may be they all lead toward the central theme toward one end hooked a monkey on her back hophead junkie hype there's no shortage of words in the jargon to identify her they all add up to the same thing and she knows better than anyone what they really mean the end of the world a fix a few GRS of Narcotics is the sole object and purpose in life but this end must have a beginning somewhere between this room and and here the stage is set beyond the ideas the drives and the emotions that will lead toward the end are molded but in the beginning God created man in his own image strong and sound in mind and body and the body begins to grow and the mind takes form and [Music] learns but sometimes there are defects in the pattern of learning errors misunderstandings and many times negligence young minds and emotions are held firm by love and a picture of security they cannot understand the complex ities of life it is the duty of the adult to introduce these complexities with a careful teaching hand they must always remember that reason is the gift of adulthood which youth has not yet learned youth feels life just as they see it and they react to those feelings thus now a problem has taken root and a beginning is [Music] established no single incident makes a a problem they are born of many [Music] errors mother [Applause] Mom sorry I won't be able to get home for dinner again tonight forgot about the club meeting plenty in the refrigerator father called he'll be home next next week see you tomorrow mother [Music] time hours of loneliness and these hours unfold into days weeks months years in which the young mind probes and experiments with life youth is hungry and eager to grow into the cherished dream of adulthood but left to itself that growth is unchanneled the adult tools are available but without the guiding hand to teach their proper use to the young person the mere use of these adult tools symbolizes the arrival into the grown-up World a dream world where dependency is ended and loneliness can be conquered and they find they can make their own decisions despite inexperience and hide their lack of security and adding appeal to the situation the unsupervised adolescent playing the make believe role of adult easily finds companions to join in the game and perhaps introduce new rules [Music] in any group playing a clandestine game there is likely to be one or two who have advanced into even more forbidden areas bigger kicks drugs narcotics addiction frequently follows a pattern of gradual addiction to different drugs often the introduction comes in the form of a goofball these are barbituates ones in common use are seanol nutal and luminol these are legitimate medications when prescribed by a physician he understands their use and potential dangers especially to those who may have an allergy toward any or all of them here an untrained youth dispenses them to persons about whom he knows nothing barbituates are sedatives and hypnotics with depressant effects to help offset the sedative effect barbituates are sometimes taken in conjunction with amphetamine such as benzidine and dexedrine these are opposites and the body fights to remain normal instinct or a natural fear of drugs May inhibit the user in making the initial experiment but those Adept in their use of drugs understand this fear make a concentrated effort to break it down they may Comfort or deride the novice but whatever the method the purpose and desire is to bring another member into the illicit [Music] fold the situation is expanding it is no longer simply a family problem a community or social problem although it is all of these things it is now also an enforcement problem not only for specially trained agents but for every field officer narcotics are associated with a wide variety of crimes Robbery Homicide burglary Vice and morals the annals report that over 75% of all crimes today are in some way motivated by drug [Music] use the symptoms of barbituate addiction are slow confused thinking and defective judgment emotional instability lack of coordination in Walking Tremors and involuntary oscillation of the eyes with the inability to hold a fixed position [Music] what's going on here the question that must be answered is why this situation arose yet like too many parents and other adults the attack is on the symptoms not the cause primary attention is on the condition of the house the material loss the opinions of neighbors the tirade storms on without sympathy or understanding thrusting cruel barbs into already opened wounds but this time the barbs have been dulled the pain is eased the goofball has won a friend she has found a crutch to see her through her difficulties instead of facing up to them and coping with them the goofball worked and in time she may be ready to try something different something [Music] [Applause] better Jive marry Grio grass hay technically it's Cannabis sativa a common name marijuana it grows 4 to 20 ft in height the fruit resembling seeds appear at the tip the plant is cut and the fruit and vegetation in this area is used to produce a narcotic cigarette after the plant has matured it is topped that is the usable portions cut off the leaves are then stripped and dried drying is generally done under the eaves of a building or a similar area where the heat will be intense yet not in direct sunlight the marijuana leaf the long slender fingers pointed at both ends are characterized by the ated edges tiny hairs and resin on the leaf make it sticky to the [Music] touch on the underside a central vein runs up the middle of the leaf smaller hair-like veins extend out from this Central vein to the serrated edges this sticky resin is gelatinous in nature and is the canaban which is the narcotic of the plant the leaves always have an odd number of finger-like blades numbering from 5 to 13 appearing on each mature Leaf the flowering tops shown here above the leaves have their own distinguishing features the tops appear in a cluster formation enveloping the fruit or seeds these tops are the portion of the plant most desired by those in the illegal traffic [Music] an established Connection in the suburbs a Rendevous pre-arranged by telephone an narcotics user is often very wary and suspicious his primary concern second only to desire and his need for the drug is his fear of [Music] detection marijuana has various stages of preparation the rough stuff is usually bought in kilos 2 and 2/10 PB it has a value of about $125 to $200 per bulk kilo sometimes the raw material is packed in pound quantities and sold for about $60 to $90 per bulk pound an innocent victim of this racket is the ordinary tobacco can both Brown wheat paper and regular white cigarette paper are used to roll the sticks joints or reefers as the cigarettes are often called the match stick or nail file is commonly used to tuck in the ends of the cigarettes after they are rolled the premium part of the marijuana plant is the flowering tops these consist of a cluster of leaves that infold the seeds and contain the essence the condensed canabal the tops packed in a tobacco can have a wholesale value of about $15 it will finally produce 60 to 75 cigarettes which sell at about $1 each when the marijuana has been topped and dried it is ready for the final preparation manicuring the leaves and other dried matter are rubbed into fine pieces in a careful operation all stems seeds and other rough matter are removed leaving only the pulverized leaves even in this final stage marijuana is easily recognized its texture and greenish color clearly distinguish it from tobacco the cigarettes are usually rolled in a double thickness of paper this prevents rough stems from piercing the wrapper this is especially important since they will probably pass through many hands before reaching the ultimate [Music] user the ends of the cigarette are tucked in to prevent the loose dry contents from spilling out the finished product the reefer $1 worth of poison and an unmistakable piece of evidence that can be easily distinguished from an ordinary cigarette now the contact is complete the buy is made [Music] a major crime is mushrooming on an officer's beat yet unlike other crimes there is no victim who will enlist his Aid and call his attention to the crime this marks the peculiar nature of the narcotics problem he must detect the crime as well as the criminal observance of inconsistencies is an axiom of good enforcement procedure a new car expensive clothes and lodgings linked with a person of no apparent income indicates possible illegal activity and warrants further [Music] investigation unlike a tobacco cigarette marijuana does not have burning agents therefore constant smoking is required to keep it lighted for effect the lungs are first filled with the smoke then a final mouthful is taken and inhaled with air some smoke is swallowed it is held in for as long as possible to get the maximum effect sometimes the cigarette is held slightly away from the mouth and with deep inhalations smoke and air are sucked in at the same time whatever the method the novice must be t taught often a few drags will produce a Toxic effect the effects are unpredictable appearing generally similar to overindulgence in alcohol but the subject may become dangerous and inflicting wounds may even seem comical to him inhibitions are relieved and the user is extremely susceptible to suggestions delirium increased imagination hallucinations often follow the eyes [Music] dilate dimensions and depth perception are greatly affected by this drug a single step may appear as a cliff activity is usually cautious and studied [Music] time perception is impaired by marijuana time seems to fly and fast action seems slow for the addict the seed of a
