thank you um I'm gonna grab a coffee roof going a minute do you need anything from McDonald's I don't thank you [Music] [Music] foreign all right so there's this little button right here and if I turn mute and so I press it twice today thinking that I was at one muting and then two unmuting and it's just being weird like maybe there's like an ant that's being crushed in there I don't know what's going on but anyways welcome skip Alzheimer 16 millimeter films AV Geeks microphone is on I can tell I see it anyways all this talk about my voice makes me want to talk about your voice enjoy [Music] dogs bark chickens cackle cat's meow cows moo and roosters crow but people talk is the instrument of spung in all the languages of the Earth [Music] now come see it yeah [Music] this watering perfectly clear that the town's Water Systems [Music] For Better or Worse human beings can talk this organ is known as the larynx or voice box it rests on top of the windpipe and serves as a valve in the breathing mechanism a doctor or other experienced person can observe the movement of the larynx with a mirror during breathing the larynx lies relaxed and open the open space is called the glottis the folds on each side of the glass are called the vocal Folds they can be brought together by conscious muscular movement to close the glottis and thus stop the passage of air the process by which sound is produced is called phonation breath vibrates the partly folds and sets up sound waves this is phonation [Music] since the breath is the source of energy for producing the sound control of respiration is essential to good voice production you know that when you breathe in Air goes through the larynx down the windpipe or trachea and through the bronchial tubes and into the lungs when you breathe out the direction is reversed but did you know that the lungs themselves cannot breathe air without other help they can only hold air to breathe you must change the capacity of the chest cavity there are two movements that affect this capacity the first of these is movement of the rib cage muscles attached to the lower ribs cause them to move in or out the rib cage grows larger or smaller in accordance with the movement of these ribs the second movement is the up and down movement of the diaphragm a flat muscle that forms the bottom of the chest cavity for inhalation the diaphragm moves down and the lower ribs move out when exhaling the diaphragm moves up and the lower ribs move back x-ray motorly show this coordination of rib movement with movement of the diaphragm it can be seen that the diaphragm movement causes the greater change in chest capacity violent exercise excitement anything that affects your breathing will affect your voice too full control of this breathing mechanism is essential to good voice production everyone knows how hard it is to this is because the muscles of the breathing mechanism are no longer under conscious control apparatus demonstrates respiration and Spanish this read represents the vocal Folds the Bellows represent the lungs uh resonance can enhance this sound different resonators modify the sound [Music] the human head is a remarkable resonator which can change tone at will by moving the tongue and the jaw foreign [Music] it is in this way that we make all the vowel sounds of language and song [Music] [Music] three major resonating cavities are used to change tone quality they are the mouth the throat and the nose muscles like those of the lips tongue and jaw change the shape of these cavities to produce the vowel sounds ah e o oh the chest also served to support these vowel tones but is not subject to muscular control one more element is necessary to produce speech this is articulation which makes the consonant sounds the parts of the speech mechanism used in articulation are the lips the teeth the tip of the tongue the base of the tongue the hard palate and the soft palate here are the sounds of and ga ba ba duh God and now again bar VA da the rapidity with which the articulators can change from one sound to another is unique in human speech it differentiates man's speech from animal noises exercises can greatly improve this ability to articulate and thus improve speech Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers if Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers where is the peck of pickled peppers that Peter Piper picked Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers if Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked in this speech Improvement program such AIDS as tooth props and bacilloscopes can help perfect the four elements of voice production respiration which provides the energy phonation which produces the sound resonance which forms the vowel tones and articulation which provides the consonants well-chosen exercises such as these should be carried out according to a supervised plan f g h i j k l m n o p o i c oh I see and I urge you fellow students [Music] in singing day in and day out practice has long been recognized as the only road to a cultivated voice which can interpret in all its beauty that Fusion of poetry and music which we call song is [Music] [Music] [Music] from earliest childhood the voice is our most direct means of communicating ideas and emotions thus the four simple elements of voice production respiration phonation resonance and articulation combined to produce a tremendous impact on the human mind whether it is that of a child in nursery school or a Statesman in world affairs not only to bring Faith what's important to maintain peace and simple decency in accordance [Applause] uh thank you that was great holy cow um I think that was Centron I'm not 100 I didn't catch the ending there um but yeah that was really quite awesome um I should have next I got so many choices here uh this one's kind of interesting um my parents were uh it's like uh I had degrees in Psychology and in um social work and my I remember my parents had a book about interpreting kids drawings uh using them as guides to maybe diagnose like huh there's something wrong in the family or huh uh this kid has some behavioral problems or huh uh anyway so this film is called understanding children's drawings enjoy play we find their drawings from his Primitives are in the important elements of art which will enable Harry picture old drawing is like play a natural language and of course at three there is no need to teach you how to draw just as there is no need to teach Bobby how to drive a car he picks it up all by himself the teacher provides the proper materials big crayons pure paints large sheets of paper children are alert to Rhythm and movement wherever Rhythm occurs it attracts their attention and appears in their work in the movement of an arm in the broad Strokes across the page in the Turning of a wheel they are quick to respond to any rhythmic movement even if things they do not understand Hannah like many children prefers brush and paint she likes the wetness of the medium for it's always fun to Splash there is great pleasure in the smearing and spreading of colors it's like messing with mud pies if we ask Hannah for the meaning of her painting she is not yet able to tell us her painting simply indicates that she is healthy and alive alert to the rhythm of movement and enjoying the splash of colors at three and a half many new elements are mastered Paul holds the crayon firmly the movement of his arm is more controlled his Strokes are much shorter there is something definite on his mind something he must Express but he will reveal the meaning of his drawing only if we urge him Paul lives near the shore his father is a sailor and the movement Seas repeated over and over in his scribbles for the rhythm of waves he creates his own symbol I'm down move to the Sea up and down up and down once the sea was stormy and his father's boat in great Danger not only scribbles portray children's Impressions dots also convey their feeling for rhythm each dot is a soldier who entered the village the lines of the fences they built and this is a letter to Father do you know what it means each Mark stands for a word just like mother writes there's rhythm in the twinning of the star the dots of stars but it takes a stroke to make them talk a DOT and a stroke an airplane circles in the sky around and around we go round and round there's also Rhythm and excitement in flowers growing in the field and again dots a cat jumped from the table to the chair and ran away about the age of four there's a turning point in Miles develop she suddenly begins to organize her lines and her light to the page as a whole a design is created at the same time she discovers the closed form a line which closes upon itself this is a very important step in her further drawing activity design and form are the elements of all art now the closed form opens the way to a more representative drawing and at five the child has grown in his mental perception and out of his daily experiences of touching and seeing a picture image emerges in his mind drawing is now his most natural language for it transfers directly the picture in his mind to the paper drawing becomes an outlet for their new mental energy it absorbs them completely the image of a tree is clear in Tess's mind therefore we can more easily identify her drawing here is Uncle George's immense beard which Judy loves to tug Ellen was greatly impressed by the tiger at the zoo but when she drew the bars across his body she turned him into a game of tic-tac-toe Dany knows exactly how to draw a house every house has a window and a door here live his uncle an aunt whom he visits every Sunday because drawing now fulfills the purpose of a language some pictures like some words become dry and stereotyped but they really to Danny after he discovers the symbol for a certain form he usually repeats it over and over he draws the outline of the house because it is in the outline that the element of rhythm is clearest children copied from each other dad's her own chimney and should Curry a tight drinks for the child the ability to paint does not grow with mere deafness of the hand or copying standard forms the ability to paint Springs from the freshness of their impressions their response to color and above all their imaginative vision Karen chooses her colors with great care she develops her design as she paints her paintings are distinguished by a deep sensitivity to color and to balance when Karen paints a house she stresses the elements of design and movement she has preserved a strong feeling for rhythm from her earlier childhood Marsha Now controls a variety of forms and by relating the house the man and the son upon a single plane proposes a story picture it's a long way the child travels between three and five from the aimless primitive scribble to the conscious perception of form and design and emerges with a composed picture story it's a very meditative narrator just I'm talking about this and this could mean this and I don't know it's really uh it's very pleasant sit and uh sip my my delicious coffee um and uh talk about uh all the kids problems as being relayed through their drawings uh let's see what do we got here what do we got what do we got um let's learn the story of Johnny Rose [Music] it starts off really weird it's very strange so here we go enjoy foreign [Music] hello there hey wait a minute where are you here I am right in this vase why you're a rose that's right my name's Johnny Johnny Rose what's your ours and William this sure is a nice house you have here never saw one like it before the last house I lived in was a lot bigger than this it had hundreds of windows so I could see the sun all day long it was called a greenhouse of course before that I lived Outdoors here I am on the ranch where I was raised in Alameda County California lots of interesting things go on here you should have seen the fuss they made getting ready for me long before I was expected they started getting the land ready first they turned under a crop that was grown here just to build up the soil these plants are full of vitamins and nutrients and after they're buried for a while the soil releases them for us to feed on a little bit at a time here are their subsoiling a field a long chisel is pulled through the soil to a depth of about 25 inches you know many heavy pieces of equipment must run over the soil for Rose production well so that it's difficult for air and water to penetrate and for our roots to grow it takes a lot of power to do this it takes two big tractors to pull this Ripper through the soil they give the land a good soaking to make it nice and mellow and easy to work into a fine seed bed for planting after the soil has had time to dry out so tractors and machines can work on it they go over the land with the disking machine this is where the new plants will take root and grow so Extra Care is taken to be sure that the soil is free of big lumps clods of hard Earth and other things that might make it hard for a rose to grow when the land is ready the soil is fumigated and sprayed with chemicals to kill any insect or germ that might harm the young Rose plants what's that machine doing this machine puts down long strips of paper to protect the seed bed it keeps the Sun out and holds soil moisture in of course without the sun weeds can't grow so the seed bed stays neat and clean until it's planted with rootstock after the paper strips are laid the field is furrowed out so that it's all ready for planning and irrigating this is what we call the mother block where plants are raised to be used as the rootstock my mother's in this picture but it's awfully hard to point her out if you've ever tried to find your mother in her old class picture then you know exactly what I mean yes I know all the plants growing here are a specie variety flowers that were wild originally species varieties are used to provide rootstock for hybrid varieties because their roots are strong and healthy my rootstock or mother's name is called manetti it is used for Greenhouse roses because it makes big strong plants for lots of flower production all year round in the fall men go into the field with sharp Clippers to select the healthy full-grown canes these canes would then provide the rootstock the plants let the workers know it's time for cutting by letting a few leaves drop to the ground after these canes are gathered they're bundled together and taken to the shed to be made into cutting what are cutting oh that's what they call the canes after they've been cut into small pieces ready for planning to make new plants so they're easier to handle in the shed the long canes are cut into pieces about nine inches long when all the leaves are off you can see there's a little bud where each Leaf used to be two buds are left at the top end so they can grow later on after the buds are removed the Finish cutting is dipped to keep it free from disease certain amounts of these cuttings are wrapped together into one big bundle for easy handling each will provide rootstock for about 200 New Rose plants I didn't know they kept you so busy this is only the beginning the Planters take bundles of prepared cuttings and move along the rows sticking them into the seed bed the holes in the paper make it easy to space the plants there I am from those two buds New Growth will Sprout as The Cutting begins to put Roots down into the soil water is the lifeblood of any crop including roses as soon as the planning is completed we get a long drink of water from the irrigation pipes while the grower and his crew always take good care of us they keep special watch for the next five or six months to prevent anything that might hurt us life is full of Hazards for any growing thing and this is especially true for roses weeds could grow up around us and choke us or maybe the greedy things would take all the nourishment we roses need besides weeds there's a form of mildew that attacks roses and of course roses make a very tasty dish for aphis and other creepy crawly things at the first sign of weeds or other volunteer growth that may try to use the food we roses need the crew is right there to get rid of it as they hold they also work air into the soil to help our newly formed roots frequent cultivation keeps the soil loose and workable and makes it easier for the fertilizer Water and Air to get to Our Roots finally about mayor June the big day arrives our field of rootstock has taken hold and is growing vigorously to maintain this vigorous growth the soil is regularly fertilized now we're sturdy and just about strong enough for budding what's that man doing this is my father's block where the buds come from they pick only the biggest and the strongest stems to be used for budwood these stems are called Scions when the Scions get to the shed the girls cut the leaves and remove all the Thorns leaving the eyes or buds after it has been butted into the rootstock each of these buds will grow the hybrid Rose as you know it thousands of Scions of many different and popular Rose varieties are prepared in this fashion each season this is the bundle my father was in you see how carefully they wrap them and keep dunking them in that big tub of water that's so the cyan won't dry out and lose vitality everyone is so careful with us see all those layers of newspaper that'll help keep the moisture in and will also help to keep us from being bumped or jostled too much there I am labeled and all ready to go out in the field everything's ready for the big operation the crews have their knives rubber bands and bundles of Bud wood this man is an expert he has spent many years working at his trade see how quickly he makes the cross-shaped cut cuts a Bud from The cyan and inserts it under the bark the ram it's hard to believe that I was ever that little now that I'm full grown here comes the tire he's fast and accurate too see how he wraps the cut with the budding rubber so I can't fall out but leaves an opening so that I can breathe and see what's going on they let us rest for about a month we get nourishment from the rootstock and begin to grow by the time we've grown to the rootstock they come around and cut the rubber bands off it must have been a relief to get that tight thing off it sure is and now that we're growing so well they break the tops of the rootstock and bend them over to one side so we'll get more sunshine we get more food that way too with all that sun and food we really get going why before I knew it I wasn't just a little Sprout anymore but I was on my way to become a full-grown adult plant and always there is water the liquid magic that enables us to combine air sunshine and minerals into a leaf or branch when I was nine inches tall our grower decided we could do without those bent over tops so he sent a crew to cut them off and pile them all together this machine is a chopper what an experience they put our old tops in one end it chops them up and sprays them out the other now or what you might call teenagers and of course we roses were busy getting acquainted our family took up a whole row Carol ambling lived next door Snow White was in our block too feyan and rosemary were next door neighbors they were both special friends of Goldilocks who lived across the road but she and I only had a nodding acquaintance we didn't have much time to socialize though once our boss the grower got going he really kept us hopping was there always something going on oh my yes if they weren't cultivating then they were hoeing around us fighting the weeds every now and then we'd get a drink of water what are they doing to you now this was not one of our favorite experiences it's more than a little bit stifling to be dusted with chemicals and insecticides is pretty scary too that thing Roars by too loud and Too Close for Comfort we just hold our breath and bear it finally we're ready to take our first step towards the big glass houses there's excitement in the air when the big day arrives first they take off all our tops they have a machine that takes everything taller than 14 inches right off we don't need that anymore and besides it would get in the way while we're traveling after the topper is finished this big tractor comes by it has a special u-shaped blade that sticks down into the soil 18 inches it loosens the soil around our roots and liftses up a little that way we don't have to get tugged or pulled from our bed but just picked up behind the tractor come the men who take us out of the soil and pack us in bundles and tie them up they leave the bundles on the ground and the next workers pick us up and put us in the truck for the trip even though we don't have far to go it's very exciting we've never been out of our Nursery Fields before and we've never been for a ride in a truck where are you going now we're going to the warehouse there's another crew waiting for us there they take us off the truck and stack us up inside first men with shears trim each plant they remove all weak growth and any bad branches didn't it hurt when we had our trim we moved along to the graders this is sort of like the end of the term in school they have three grades triple X double X and just plain X anyone that's unlucky enough to be just plain X is thrown away from now on all plants of the same grade Stay Together the counter puts us together in groups of 50. then we go for a dip in a tank full of a solution that keeps us healthy and disease-free while we're in storage the Packer takes us off the drain board and puts us in a case there's room here for 400 plants or eight units of 50 plants this case is a paper bag lined with polyethylene and a corrugated cardboard carton research men from the University of California Agricultural Extension Service and the United States Department of Agriculture worked with the grower to develop this new modern package my they certainly take good care of you yes indeed then they seal us up and labally outside with our name great and how many of us there are now we're ready for the trip to cold storage at San Jose that's 25 miles away but we go there because they have the best facilities around Cold Storage Keeps Us in a good dormant condition until the greenhouse grower is ready to plant Us in his Greenhouse we generally don't stay in cold storage for too long the whole operation is designed to keep us out of the soil for as short a time as possible when the order comes in from the greenhouseman off we go and this time it's a new adventure greenhouses not just in California but in all 50 States and Canada meet us in a hurry so naturally we're off to the airport to catch the first flight out the airport is always a busy place buses and cars arrive one after the other with passengers for the great airplanes try come and go picking up and delivering perishable Air Freight we were delivered to the freight Dock and rushed aboard our plane which was ready and waiting as VIPs that's very important passengers naturally we receive the special care and attention of the airline's crew before you could say Jack Robinson we were all loaded up and ready to go I'll bet you didn't know that roses could fly but sure enough some of us do so this was your house with hundreds of windows yep that's it this is the greenhouse as soon as we arrived the nurseryman unpacks US we are all ready for planning thanks to the special care that we receive from our grower all during our life we made the trip and arrived in top-notch shape immediately after unpacking we were popped in a nice warm beds and waited on hand and foot until we were ready for the florist you see we were grown especially for this greenhouse so naturally we're treated differently than garden roses since we are of such healthy stock and since we are grown in greenhouses under ideal conditions the bushes produce fine long-stemmed beautiful roses like me when your father bought us this afternoon at the florist we certainly were excited of course I've traveled by truck and by airplane too but I had never been in a car none of the other flowers had been in someone's home either and they all said things like good luck and have a nice trip we did have a pleasant trip in and I must say I'm glad to be here I'm glad you're here too Johnny thank you [Music] a sentient Rose yeah I I don't think so um I don't know if we want to hear what they have to say and get too attached to their lives um however fleeting they are um beautiful footage though beautiful farming footage um and uh kind of a wacky story but we've seen this before we've seen this Trope before of like this narration so there's not sync sound and then you know this kid is introduced to this concept and it's being explained to them by this talking whatever um so anyways let's watch some animation uh this is about Prometheus enjoy [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] I have to look after it I must guard it yes I will Rush he Feast us [Music] look my friend what I've brought you ah my friend Prometheus you always have something new what is it I taught man to use tone and that was not an easy job but now with the aid of stone man can make a boat out of a log flash it to a stick and he can plow the land he can defend himself from beast and so you taught man did you well you better come and look and see what I did the sacred fire of the almighty Zeus will have a reliable guide what a monster that is what are you wasting your talents on my friend if you only knew how they need Zeus's fire down there who needs it there the people it would warm their land it would fire their hearts it would illuminate their thoughts talking about people again I just came from there foreign [Music] to light their thoughts do you understand what you're aiming at why if people will get the sacred fire they will be like us the gods who will be able to tell Gods from people then can you imagine what a mix-up there will be oh no my bronze guard knows only one thing obedience and now imagine someone is stealing towards the sacred fire [Music] stop him help Greg you choke me how how can I stop him the key the key hell turn the key oh [Music] oh well well do you see that you certainly are remarkable my friend oh [Music] come what me I'll help them [Music] foreign [Music] it can't be Prometheus [Music] no one else no one knows quiet quiet [Music] oh my best creation I'll console you my son hibistus you must find and punish the impudent one I but I can't Prometheus is my friend have mercy on me o Almighty well what's the matter you can't make up your mind be careful Master the gods are powerful [Music] do you remember how they once through your Mount Olympus you're still limping thank you [Music] fires there are fires everywhere You Must Destroy them oh oh oh oh man [Music] a goddess that are you you can be compared to God anyway [Music] foreign [Music] Prometheus to talk to him you can't do anything with him now some time must pass I will not be prometheus's hangman ah come down your friend is not as simple as you think as long as he has even a tiny theme of the Sacred fire left he's invulnerable is that right huh I didn't know that's why he's Brave I know people of that sort Deeds oh yes but they think only of themselves oh another fire look another another [Music] come help me what's the use nothing can be done now foreign [Music] foreign thank you [Music] you'll have too early o God of Gods while I live there will be fire on this Earth [Music] what did I tell you Prometheus did leave a tiny little flame for himself anyone would do the same in his place but now we can't do anything with him eh is that true it's the fox for so all [Music] look fire we are saved [Music] foreign [Music] [Laughter] [Music] well who won but you you yourself why did you ever do it if you didn't understand that from the beginning then you'll never understand it [Music] foreign forgive me friend Prometheus I didn't want to do it they forced me that is the will of Zeus that is the will of Zeus I prefer being chained to the mountain like this than being a slave to Zeus [Music] [Applause] [Music] whoa ready [Music] and now tell me the name of what did you do all that what secret reasons made you to it confess and your faith will change for the better yes think of your destiny do that tell us what you were counting on I wanted to help people ha you want us to believe that tell the truth oh tell us I wanted to help people it's alive I wanted to help people oh gods you are unjust [Music] confess and your faith will change for the better you wouldn't stand why not it's very simple just say I'm guilty I wanted power or Smite and anyone will understand you I wanted to help people it's very simple but you wouldn't understand that [Laughter] just look he's laughing at us so that torture is not enough then I'll give you the most terrible punishment of all a billion I wanted to help the people and I help them there says no more and he never has been don't leave me take care of me the fire speaks his father [Music] foreign [Music] that was kind of cool um was the animation Japanese or Chinese uh I don't think it was Eastern European but I could be wrong I I missed the credit so maybe one of you can tell me but uh thanks for watching today wide variety of different films that's that's why I like doing this um so tomorrow I'm going to be at a conference and so the show will be
