e e e e hello everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mimer films and uh that kind of intro piece that I used I found when I was uh we were scanning a bunch of cornet outtakes and it was a glorious thing because I you know I've pointed this out before but that kid is looking at the thread of the projector he starts the projector and he did not put the film on the tiup Reel correctly so it's just pouring onto the floor uh I love that that's great because certainly that has happened to me even nowadays it happens when I'm showing film sometimes I think I have it have it on the the takeup real and it just just spews everywhere um anyways is uh I am still suffering from covid or the lasting uh lingering effects of covid uh which have it's a little demoralizing yesterday I felt much better than I do today and I don't know what's going on but anyways I am in my room uh so I don't get my wife sick she's been a wonderful caregiver uh so it's the end of the year and I got to say based on the last two months good riddance man uh November December not great times but what made him great was the fact that you guys were there and I was able to show films to you um and we watched this year more than 1150 films that's amazing holy cow that's so many films um so Kudos thanks for watching them with me I could not have done it without you uh let's go ahead and start with a animated film animated by a class with some music that I hope won't get me in trouble The Romp enjoy [Music] la [Music] n [Music] a oh [Music] uh that was wonderful I mean you know okay it's not like Warner Brothers level animation or uh but it was really fun and that music was great and I like that the music also wasn't perfect so I don't know what that's from I'm sure YouTube will tell me at some point it'll it'll say who it was oh I should say so yesterday some of some of you those of you who joined us we watched uh Marcel Maro uh panamine film called the hands and I said well hopefully the French archive will not take this down and sure enough they did they put a claim on it thankfully they didn't take down the stream but I question the validity of that but I'm not going to fight it cuz I don't I also don't own the copyright to that so and it's not in public domain so I removed the segment so that the rest of the the show can reappear uh all these films that we're showing today yeah all of them uh are from the uh academic film Archive of North America which is something that was created by a collector um Jeff Alexander based in San Jose California and he he I think the beginning of the year donated his collections uh to John Hopkins University so um we have over the years the last 10 years or so been digitizing things on his behalf and so I I felt like I wanted to share some of these things um because he has a very unique curatorial eye where he he picks very specific films that he calls academic films and honestly his argument for what is an academic film versus what's not is just dependent on what he likes uh so that's a little specious but anyways he still got some great films and he has great copies of films his you know he has films that are in pretty good shape for the most part um and he also has a relationship with a lot of filmmakers which is pretty amazing anyways this next film is called unicycle looking at my world enjoy [Music] I've had flashes when I was riding my us cycle that I was riding along a 6 in wide board 500 ft in the air backward just riding along with all these people looking at me with these big wide eyes and and I just almost I fell off once when I thought about it riding my unicycle is just like playing basketball people live two different lives they'll use basketball to meet people and things and unicycle is just a skill part of my life it's just something I do about 5 years ago at my school it was a class and uh we just got on them and we held on to a fence and just started going and you'd go for an inch or two at first and a couple people fell and broke their arm I probably fell about 10 or 20 times every day and then finally that one big day you know the day before you'd say I'm going to quit and then the next day you say I'll do it one more day and then you get on it and the way you [Music] go when people see me riding around all over the place I'm going to work and to me it's just like a normal casual thing and some people look at me and I just look at him and smile and say thank you I don't see it as anything special [Music] I've had thoughts about making a living at flying the Goodyear blimp but I I haven't really thought about it right now as a living but I think maybe someday it would be fun hi Tony good to see you oh was cool today it was all right come and help me with the groceries what' you do in English uh we did an essay and we'll be getting a b tomorrow good for you how about biology um I got I got a test and I I think people my age have a lot of problems with their home life I've been lucky and I haven't had any problems with my family life at all I think that's helped me tremendously in school and in my hobbies and things like that hey Mom oh that's great Tony I just it just beautiful I'm going to go over and showy go miss how I do it all right go and show Andy will you come home in time for dinner I might have a butt eat over there okay all right all right but save a little room for dessert okay okay I'll you later okay wait just a second May rain [Music] I sort of enjoy being looked at I think I like to show off if I see somebody looking at me and I'm just riding along I'll Whip around and go backwards and try to make an impression it's it's fun fun more routine how's the ranch still good have you gotten any new animals sightly yeah yeah which one what kind did you get new new goats new goats yeah have they given any milk yet I go in about 3:00 or 4 in the afternoon and talk to Andy Gomez who's the owner of the Mexican restaurant um he talks to me and he tells me about the different things I used to do when I was in there when I was young and he sort of smiles when I when I ride my unicycle because he's from Mexico and he doesn't see it in Mexico very often and we'll just talk about different things in the restaurant business and house life and we just have good times you just pull it as hard as I can okay kind of a got it and what happens when this gets fail what happens when this gets buil well like we can put another one oh okay it it goes quickly it that's right look how fast it's going now uh-huh [Music] how's it going how you like turn ride the unicycle I know it's fun okay okay here get on the seat now a lot of my friends think I'm crazy because I study all the time and and I talk to the teachers who are generally older and they enjoy seeing one student out of 50 who come up and ask them how their day was a lot of my friends are like that and I enjoy people who enjoy all people rather than just people that are under 20 years old come on try and ride now when you leave Le forward a little bit and then you'll get it I used my cycle to get to one particular job that's only about a mile away and he is a 91-year-old man who is from Germany and he was a fighter in World War I for the Germans and he managed to come over here because he got shot down in the war and he came over here and all his friends are Jewish for some strange reason how far is that from hurg oh I mean is it close middle middle of ger the middle of Germany and Hamburg is at the at the FL what sort of plants are we going to plant now no yeah nothing special we have the only thing we have um we have to plant to transplant is the Rose Oh you mean the rose over here we work for 2 or 3 hours gardening or building I laay bricks for him and we cut and prune and things like that in the garden did you plant this tree yeah how long ago how long ago about um 25 years you planted this yes just a little seed no and it was a little tree start if they are falling down all all the ones which fall down are fairly fairly R mean you don't you don't pick them off you don't pick them I always wait till till they fall I think what I like best about Mr Ros andal is his humor and his way he's so active he comes out to build and whatever I do he just helps me do and he cracks funny German jokes in German unfortunately I can't understand them so he he sort of makes fun of me see then from this little bird it comes to the side oh I see you mean so you mean so when you cut it when you cut it off bottom then then more juice goes up to that far we talk a lot about his old friends that have all sort of you know haven't written and haven't come back you know and take more weeds out and things like that people die when they get old see you later byebye [Music] I think we need a little bit of trimming done I work for a woman over on A Street near my house house I go and garden that's how we do and she I think she just enjoys seeing me because she she isn't around younger people very often at all they don't you don't put them in dirt at all anymore than you do orphan how do they get the nutrients out of the you know out of the air yeah they well naturally in the uh I mean they just take tropical countries they get it oh the bottle brush this is a well I I thought it was a shrub and I was going to put a small shrub back here but it turned into quite a large tree I like it very much when did you plant this one well I'll actually we'll get some cuting before you go and it's so nice that young people are interested in that type of thing now I don't know her name I've I've worked for her for almost a year now and I just hav't haven't asked her her name come on in I think old people are nice and I've just found that in my traveling it just happens I meet older people I'm sure some older people do feel lonely but then there's some younger people who feel lonely too you mean you like rice pudding yeah I love it that's Augie's favorite especially your rice pudding that's best I make it for him quite frequently rice pudding and Shelly beans go do they sure never tried that one before I put peanuts on ice cream too we never really get into intricate conversations we just talk about the present because she doesn't believe in the past she doesn't want to know of things that happened a long time ago simply because they've already happened forward to the future future I think that the past was very important because you learn from the past and of what's already happened for the future and I sometimes go out and buy her groceries because she has a problem with her lungs and she can't get out very [Music] often I think the one of the biggest problems that bothers me is the the fact that there's money in the world money is just a whole different way of turning the barter system around I think that if there wasn't money then nobody would be starving they there would have to be some kind of a limit to food I think some people get into groups of people that just aren't the right people to hang around I have fun by myself I don't have any group and I'm I feel I'm just doing fine [Music] I'm so sure we're all looking up Tony maranthal right now let's see he was in a couple of he was in this movie let's see and he was a production assistant and an intern on some other things but uh I don't know uhoh there's an obituary uh they received a uh let's see master's degree in telecommunications from NYU spent 20 years as a consultant and entrepreneur in the techn technology industry he spent years working in Europe settled in Berkeley for the last 10 years to focus on raising his beloved Son he was an avid athlete profoundly proudly participated in the Escape From The Rock Alcatraz triathlon he was a participant in the mankind project he loved music playing drums sculpting with glass and hardly ever missed a Renaissance Fair he's arrived by his son Ryan Eric maranthal uh H okay there we go he was 51 when he passed all right such a worldly kid I mean you know I thought okay this is about how to ride a unicycle very little bit about riding a unicycle so much more about everything else all right so this next film is uh Akira it's part of the minority youth series that was released by uh um BFA and uh Stuart row and Stuart row helped make Felicia which is a film uh that was made before this whole minority youth series came out but it was then re-released in that series and this is looking at American kids who come from diverse backgrounds and uh this one obviously is a Japanese American kid so enjoy e [Music] morning for [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] at home I'm in a traditional Japanese atmosphere where we speak Japanese and we have occasionally have Japanese food and we have rice every night but then outside of the home it seems that I'm in kind of a different world at school and like being in the band and I feel that I'm in between that I I I don't know if I could readily get along or if I had to be in one culture all the time [Music] like if I were to move out of my house and not to to have any kind of Japanese uh background or if I were to go to Japan and live there I sometimes ask myself if I could get [Music] along last time I left school in June maybe a week and a half early and my dad and I went camping we sat in the late afternoon and just talked about himself and about me something that was really good because being hassled in the everyday life you know the routine schedule it was really relaxing just talking about things in talking to him about my friends and about just the American people he's very quiet he feels that he really can't understand what people are saying so he just kind of keeps quiet and think he's very wise he's seen a lot of life he knows you know what's going on and sometimes I guess I feel that way about life that I know really what's going on and I talk to him or I think about it some more and I find that I really don't my mom has been working in at clean houses in domestic work you know uh maybe since the early 50s as far as I can remember she does a lot of things around the house more than just cleaning house and keeping garden and things like that she writes a lot of PK of Po DFT and she's limited as to what she can do because she has to bring in the income and I wonder sometime I sometimes wonder how she can do it I mean she's up very late at night washing the dishes or cleaning up and still she has time to ride in Japan uh she was an elementary school teacher first and second grade and she couldn't speak English that well to teach here she often mentions that you know she would like to really learn English [Music] I think my mother would wouldn't believe that I've tried marijuana or smoked it I don't know why one time I mentioned that I smoke marijuana anything said no she shook her head said no I'm sure my dad knows that I've tried it because I was rolling a a joint in my room and I was leaning on the telephone book and he came in and got the telephone book looked me looked at him and looked out at the desk and he just walked out like nothing was there maybe nothing was you know to him nothing was there but I was just trembling shaking you know oh my God what you know what's going to happen because I hear of all these other people you know who who's parents best them you now that I look look back on it like I don't have really any desire to smoke in marijuana now but I look back on it's just a passing thing that maybe to other people would be a passing thing and then then again into some it could you know lead to other things I don't know I really don't know it was something that I thought then would be really nice to you know do for a long time but it really wasn't I guess I've changed since then and I my father came over from Japan uh kind of like a missionary [Music] through Hawaii Taiwan and the Philippines he came to America with with my mother this was maybe late 30s maybe 1940 and the war broke out and were all brought into the [Music] camps and my mom and dad were separated for maybe the duration of the war my dad was brought to New Mexico and my mom and my older brothers were down in Southern California near l pooke and the reason why they were separated was that since my dad was a minister or something to do with religion that the government thought that he might have something to do with spreading Japanese propaganda to the other Japanese people on one occasion I was talking to my mother about the living quarters they had one small room for three kids in her herself and at one pretty large bed they tried to make the best of it they made a lot of friends like still keeping in touch now they don't seem to hold any grudges or anything it's government and of the relocation centers that's about all I know [Music] about the Buddhist religion I just know some of the basic philosophies I don't know if I could really get into it and discuss them I one time a couple years ago I went and spoke at to a Sunday school class A Lutheran class they were studying the other religions of the world and I happened to know person in that class and I was asked to go speak you know go talk about it and I talked to my dad he told me to say certain things about it and I did and like on on various various religious holidays the Buddhist religion we we pray before eating a long kind of thing sometimes I see no purpose in it now that I think of it because I've been brought up with it yet I really don't understand what it's saying and sometimes I talk to my dad I really don't know the meaning of being a Buddhist he said well you really don't have to if someone asks you just say that you're a Buddhist and that's enough they are sure [Music] look I feel that I owe something to them not a debt but just a feeling I have my mother and my father have worked really hard and to look at my brothers see how far they've gone kind of feel that I'm kind of obligated to go just as [Music] far I guess it's customary in Japan like when you have a father who do does something the children usually follow what he does especially in being a minister cuz my my mother's father was a minister and her only brother was a minister down in Los Angeles and her sisters are are teachers in the religion my dad has you know let us do what we want to do rather than say well you're going to do this when you grow up and I think that's really good my father really didn't have a choice as to what he could do he he was restricted geographically and and otherwise for myself I I'm going to college and I have just the vast you know choice as to what to do and what I want to do with my life and he was saying he used well he used the term zaku which means kind of upper class you know and then I felt kind of a streak of guilt because you know he didn't have a choice and I do and I'm I'm not even thinking that I could have possibly been in a position like that and makes me appreciate what I have and the position I'm in I guess before I was kind of going through without really thinking about it [Music] I'll tell you I like the vibe of the 70s films you know hey let's ask this kid this high school kid or let's ask this yeah in both cases high school kids uh what do they feel about life what do they do what's their look at the future what's their look at the past it's kind of interesting uh I I don't know excuse me I'm this Co nonsense it's a lot of anyways uh I is there something like this now where kids are asked what they think about what's happening in in their lives and in the world and what their view of the future is I'm sure there is I mean there's so much stuff uh being generated now uh but this is something that was shown in schools uh both those films uh and this one was really popular this minority youth series was very popular uh all right so I know what a lot of you are asking is where does the summer spend the winter like it's winter now where did the summer go this film atmosphere this guest arrives on Horseback and say confidentially he owns a stable of 14 Cadillacs desert circus week one of the many sparkling pageants of each season in the village features a Gayla parade there's rousing Marshall Music and dancing along famous Palm Canyon Drive Hollywood's Western stars turn out in full force gay decorated floats make this an event that Rivals Pasadena's annual Rose Parade or the New Orleans Market [Music] gr each entry symbolizes a landmark of Palm Springs colorful kawiya Indians of the aanti tribe turn out in full regalia centuries ago these people discovered the health bestowing climate and the rare beauty of Palm Springs and made it their permanent home today the Indians own much of the property in Palm Springs and are an integral part of the community visitors are always welcome to the nearby reservation of this tribe free to roam the Canyons in which they fished and hunted long before the first white man [Music] came this lady symbolizes the Spanish influence which is still strong in Palm Springs the famous Howard family of seab biscuit racing Fame is represented not by a horse but by an elephant [Music] Palm Springs is a major Center for tournament [Music] tennis here is a replica of the Old Stage Coach that used to bring visitors from San Bernardino today they come in by fast train and by plane notified in advance of your time of arrival El Mirador sends a station wagon to Depot or airport to bring you to the hotel and soon you too are a part of the pageantry represented in this desert circus week parade part of the fun the excitement the sheer Joy afforded by America's most Charming Resort here indeed is the Supreme headquarters of Resort life in the west America's most desirable vacation land and the most glorious expression of this way of life is found at El Mirador here is the queen of desert circus week riding the float representing El Mirador [Music] Hotel this is a replica of elor's famous tower of the Stars the Hallmark of gracious living in the [Music] desert the tower that rises above the hotel above the village the tower that represents all all the genius of man and creating new avenues to Holiday happiness the tower that invites you to come where the summer spends the winter don't wait come this season come to enchanting El Mirador Gem of the [Music] desert well of course that was an ad for a resort in pal Springs uh what a wonderful kind of Slice of Life of although it was a very specific life a very rich white white life uh the one thing watching that parade at the end reminds me how cheated we are uh with our local and Regional parades uh you know I'm not including Macy's or the Philadelphia holiday parade or the uh Tournament of Roses uh parade but the parades that we have here in Raleigh the floats are lame so lame they're basically they all are kept in a field out in the middle of nowhere uh in rural North Carolina and somebody rents them they come in and they basically put a banner on the side and then they just have people waving there's no like tennis court like fakey tennis court or if you ever watch uh homecoming parades from the uh the 50s and 60s uh there's a homage to them of course in animal house but they're not far off I mean they those were these amazingly lab elaborate uh locally made floats and um what we have in Raleigh is just lame lame oh well I have so many fights to fight I don't think I can put energies towards improving uh Parade floats but maybe in 2025 maybe I'll have more time who knows who knows but let me just say this I
