[music] [music] [music] [music] The time is 1796. The place the laboratory of Aleandro Bolta in the little town of Padra Italy. The famous Italian chemist is finishing an experiment to which he has devoted years of patient effort. Over the laboratory hangs an expectancy tense as the gathering storm outside. >> So for the next time, Luigi, you will make a certain everything is in order and take care. No need to warn me my stroke. There's a solution. Lie enough to eat off a man's fingers. Ah, your fingers lift up the plates. See my straw? Zinc, copper, zinc, copper, zinc, copper. And the leather separators all in place. E, that is good. Now we will proceed. of my stuff. Could he not wait? The Omens, they are evil. A superstitious fool. The founder comes in good time to salute a miracle. Maybe >> a miracle. >> See, I do not understand with this. We We shall see. If I am right, I can equal through chemistry everything that Galvani has done by spinning that great big squirrel cage of his. Yes, and more with this and with less effort. >> So, you have a set, master. >> Turn down the lights. 60 years later, a French scientist, Gast proudly announces another achievement in this chemical [music] magic. >> To professor VA, he owe much, but it was only the beginning. True he did produce electricity through chemistry. But once his cell had exhausted itself, it became useless. It could not be revitalized. >> And with your discovery. >> Ah, my cell when exhausted, it can be recharged over and over again. >> Perhaps you should tell us how. And remember, we are bankers, not scientists. >> In the magic of electricity, we are all amateurs. There is so much we do not know. Perhaps never will. There is not a man alive that knows what electricity really. >> But you know how it behaves >> to a degree only. I shall show you in my sketch. Today we know as vot suspected that this electricity is formed through the action of a corrosive solution on two separated metal plates of differing character. Walter used plates of copper and zinc with a solution of lie. We use plates of different types of lead in a solution of sulfuric acid. The solution affects the two metal plates but in varying degree creating an electrical pressure. This pressure we know has a flow from one plate which we call negative to the other which we call positive. Why this happens no one knows. What we do know, however, that as more and more of the current is used, more and more of the acid goes into the plates until finally the solution becomes extremely dilute and the cell becomes exhausted. However, all the elements are still there ready to be reused. We have to but reverse the process. Return the electric current into the cell. Dive the sulfuric acid out of the plates back into the solution. Finally, the sand is completely revitalized, ready to be used again. And those gentlemen, we have here indeed the box of magic power to be transported anywhere to be put to work and when exhausted, it can be recharged or so on over and over again. And how do you get it as you say uh recharge? Oh, various ways. But first of all, mechanical generation. How long does that require? An hour, a day, a week. >> At the present moment, it requires several months. >> Months. >> Oh, gentlemen, with more experimental and more work, we surely hope to gain our goal in the very near future. >> The dream of the box of magic force was still a dream. [music] There was still much experiment ahead, much work to be done before that hope became a practical accomplishment. Years passed. [music] New names were linked with new achievements, new processes, plates coated with chemical lead paste, refinements in electrolytic solutions and battery acids reduced charging time, increased capacities. And then over the horizon of inventive genius came a new creation, the horseless carriage. And overnight, America became motorminded. Skeptics called it the rich man's toy and yelled, >> "Get a horse!" But though the gas buggies sputtered and smoked and stalled and smelled, once America took to motoring, there was no stopping. Those pioneers had steel in their souls. In their good right arms, too. And they needed it. But not for long. Under the spurring lash of incentive, self cranking was on the way. A mechanical right arm powered by a magic box. And here it is as of 1917. wooden case, open top, all for only $90. Time and progress marched on. Here's the 1924 model, $46. [music] But of course, not nearly as powerful as today's modern battery, which costs 1/4 that price. Here indeed, the dreams and the hopes, the patient experiment of Voltton plants and a host of others have grown to realization. The crude and feeble elements of a century and a half ago have been transformed into multiple cells, each [music] containing many plates. Yet the basic principle remains the same. It's still the magic box. Nobody knows even today exactly why it works. In practical function, [music] it becomes a storage tank serving a variety of outlets. Obviously, at this rate, the tank soon would be exhausted [music] were it not for a pump which operates to keep the supply at constant level. Interpreted into practical operation, the storage battery is the supply tank of electricity, feeding a variety of accessories and being constantly [music] resupplied by the generator. Every motor carries its own complete powerhouse. And so faithfully does it perform that we're apt to take it for granted, never realizing the magnitude of its job. Today, after a century and a half, the storage battery has earned a high place in our modern civilization. And from whence comes this modern magic? Out of the crude and cluttered workshop of Professor Va have grown gigantic laboratories where cores of scientists and technicians are constantly broadening the horizon of progress in the critical field of electrochemistry. Progress in paste compounds, in electrolytic agents, in metallurgy, plastics, and in the broad scope of design. progress in countless dynamic details, [music] most of them far beyond the understanding of the lay motoring mind, but all vital contributions in advancing Atlas batteries to their pinnacle position as the modern magic box. And what's [music] the payoff? Let's examine a few of the Atlas constructional superiorities which have grown out of this research and development. Features of quality and value which stand behind Atlas performance. There's the grid of an Atlas plate. Not very [music] spectacular, is it? Or is it? Look closer. Notice the taper of grid structural members increasing in size as they approach the plate post. Greater strength, sure, but more important, designed for increased electrical carrying capacity as the accumulated current approaches the post outlet. Look at the grid itself. Looks like a ladder. Ah, but those lattice members are staggered to hold more electrochemical material more securely. Even the grid members are ingeniously shaped for retentive strength yet to expose more [music] active material service to the electrolyte. Just details certainly, but highly important factors in power and performance. Intensive research revealed the primary reason why batteries wear out. What happens during the months of charging and recharging? Secrets hidden inside the battery case. The mystery of plate shedding was exposed as resulting from the scouring action of a constant stream of bubbles washing up the face of the plates, wearing away the active plate material. Out of this research came the fiberglass retainer mats [music] which effectively resist plate shedding and thus greatly prolong the useful life of the aristocrats of the atmos line. Also the protective valve, simple but positive protection against overfilling. In this laboratory are facilities for putting batteries through the abuse of rough road country driving. A,000 m, 10,000 m, years of exaggerated punishment, crowded into weeks, and all under the critical scrutiny of technicians. Engineering factual research also reveals the grim fallacy of judging battery value by appearance or low price tag. Here's an atlas and a so-called [music] bargain competitor. Outwardly they look about alike. But look deeper. There's the answer. Short plates. Compared with the Atlas, it's like sending a boy to do a mansized job. Now, what do you think of that bargain battery? Other so-called money savers by some price tag competitors are dramatically exposed in a [music] directly competitive breakdown test. Again, the Atlas and its rival look about the same. But in this fight for life, looks don't count. The payoff is on guts. The rules are simple. Book them in series, [music] short circuit them, and let quality prove itself. For a moment, both take the grueling strength. Ah, one begins to weaken. There it goes. Now, let's see why. There's the answer. No wonder it couldn't stand up against the husky atlas. But how much could the atlas take? Let's try shorting it through a heavy spike. Keep your eye on those connectors. Which will give up first under this ordeal? How long can they stand this murder? Hey, look at that spike. The spike itself is beginning to glow and burn under the terrific strain. There it goes, melted in two. But the battery stands the beating without weakening. Now the true significance of Atlas torture testing begins to be apparent. Super tests such as the speed up life cycling of samples of production, charging, discharging, charging, discharging, crowding years of normal action into weeks. Now it can be understood why old batteries that have lived their lives in ordinary service and batteries that serve in America's biggest fleets [music] of road cars become the objects of acute laboratory inspection and analysis. For out of this extra measure of patient experiment and experience comes the extra margin of performance which distinguishes Atlas performance. Atlas batteries for the highway also partake of the experience and knowhow gained in designing and building batteries for the most critical [music] of uses. Blood brothers of Atlas automobile batteries are serving as dependable standby power supply [music] ready for action in any emergency. Others have the no less important task of [music] powering the radio, lights, instruments, and many other electrically operated features of transport [music] airliners. They range in size from this giant which powers one of the underseas dreadnots of the [music] silent service to this mighty designed for use where size and weight are paramount considerations. Others of that same illustrious family fought around the world, vitalizing the eyes and brains and the fist of the greatest armament in the history of the world. Thus, out of the unceasing scientific experiment and research, the constant betterment of yesterday's best comes progress [music] in the laboratory today, on the production line tomorrow. >> [music] [music] >> Thank you. [music] [music] [music] Hallelujah. >> [music] [music] [music] >> down. Hey >> [music] [music] >> Heat. Heat. [music] [music] >> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> That's The Atlas line. Compact, but a team that's mighty tough to beat. A type to fit the purpose and pocket of every motorist you serve. Over the years of modern motoring, Atlas has won recognition and success outstanding in all motordom. In the field of replacement sales, where motorists are free to select the battery of their choice. [music] Atlas stands with the top four leaders over hundreds of competitors. They chose Atlas on proved performance. Guaranteed performance, stand-up performance that actually excels the standards of the society of automotive engineers. Well known and respected by all the inner circle of motordom is this [music] distinguished group. They are the top technicians of the entire automobile industry. The men who designed and engineered all the proudest of the modern motor cars, foremost in automobile research and advancement. They're the men who never guess. They don't have to for at their command are facilities unequaled in all of the world. Their standards are high. They [music] know what constitutes real motoring performance. And they know how batteries should perform. >> On the inside, sleek and handsome on the outside. The mobile home deluxe can go anywhere, almost anywhere. Order by midnight tonight and we'll throw in the fabulous bulletproof car battery. zero starting and life cycle and every [music] test is a real third degree as only those automotive engineers could devise. Yet in the amper hour capacity test this atlas for which the SAE standard demands 90 a hours actually delivers performance of 100 amp hours. 111% the requirement of the SAE standard. That means more power [music] longer. In the zero starting test, this Supreme Court standard demands 162 [music] continuous seconds of cranking ability. But the Atlas delivers 192 continuous seconds, 119% of [music] the standard. faster starts on coldest mornings. In the allimportant light test, SAE standards demand 269 [music] complete cycles of charging and discharging to merit approval. Whereas the Atlas actually delivers 475 cycles or 177% [music] of the standard extra months of dependable service. Yes, the Atlas wears its SAE standard ratings proudly, and those are the reasons. No wonder it carries with it a written warranty [music] of satisfaction on the road. Hey, what's this? Another test. Well, certainly not very scientific, but mighty impressive. They're going to try to start all those cars simultaneously from one Atlas battery. All ready. Ignition on. Kick the starters and there they go. That's power for you. Now what? Some new winter starting idea? No, it looks more like something for Ripley. A real Believe It or Not. There's nothing unusual about a battery with power to turn the engine. But here's a battery that lifts the entire car right off the ground. Most everyone at one time or another has run his car on battery power alone. Shift into high gear, step on the starter, and go ahead. But look at this. It's no trick to build a car that will pull a battery, but to build a battery that will pull not one but 15 cars, that takes power and stamina. Scientists will turn up their noses at this, but to the man on the street, it speaks louder [music] than any technical treatise. How much punishment will one of these Atlas batteries take? The SAE never imagined such a test as this, but even they would get a kick out of seeing it. Fire when ready. The case is ripped to pieces, the plates torn to [music] shreds, all the solution spilled out. That battery is a dead duck. But is it? Oh, don't give up so quickly. [music] This is an atlas. It's not done for the count even yet. Nobody in his right mind would ever think of shooting a battery full of holes. It doesn't make sense. Of course not. But never mind that. Just stand up and cheer. You've just met the champion. [music] >> [music] >> and several dozen doorbells. In New York, striking municipal workers remain off the job today for the second straight year. The city has been without bus, subway, and taxi service in addition to recently discontinued water and power. Rioting firemen are expected back on the job within a few months. Meanwhile, the city's police force continues its sitin of the Statue of Liberty. And the new Miss Tree Stump is We have a tie. The winners are Miss Maple Sap and Miss Pine Cone. >> [music] [music] [music] >> Heat. Heat. [music] [music] >> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Heat. Heat. [music] A woman I met the other day asked me what I do for a living. And I told her that my job is is dealing with people. She asked me what kind of people and I said all kinds. And that's what I like about my job. >> Hey, how you doing? >> Pretty good. How are you? >> Good. How's your new place? You moved in? >> Oh, yeah. It's real nice. It's almost twice the size. We got about one more day of moving in our furniture, though. >> Far out. That's great. Listen, if you need any more help, let me know. I can get my dad's truck. You know, >> I think I can do it on my own, but if I need help, I'll be sure to call You know, I found that part of the enjoyment I get from this job is in having a good relationship with the other people who work here. And and it's interesting to me that the better my relationships with other employees are, the better I'm able to relate to all those different kinds of people who come through that front door. >> Oh, hi. How you doing? >> Fine. >> Good. What would you all like today? You hungry? >> I want strawberry shake. >> No, no, sweetheart. No, no milk. I want a strawberry milkshake. >> No, sorry. I want you to have milk, please. >> I want a strawberry milkshake. >> Okay, >> honey. What? What do you want? >> I can see you have your hands full. >> I don't know. >> How would you like a cheeseburger? >> Yeah. >> We have the best hamburgers in town. How about a bonus jack that's got >> I don't know what >> it's got two pieces of meat. It's got cheese and sauce. Two pickles. >> Um, let's I want a strawberry milkshake. >> I don't know what I want. >> Okay, let's let's start. We'll have two milks. >> Two delicious milks. >> Two delicious milks. Two cheeseburgers. What do you want? >> I have a double jumbo jack. >> A double jumbo jack. >> Double jumbo. >> And I'll have um a bonus bonus jack. >> A bonus jack. >> Honey, what do you want? You >> want some French fries? >> Yeah, some French fries. That would be >> Want to make a super scoop? >> Yeah. Thank you. And how about something to drink for for the two of you? >> I'd like some coffee. >> Coffee? >> What do you want to drink? >> Uh, a large >> small. >> Okay, that is one double jumbo jack, one bonus jack. >> People come to us for a lot of reasons. They're in a hurry, they don't feel like cooking, or or just because they like our food. And the moods people come to us with can be almost anything from terrible to terrific. So, my own personal goal is to make everyone, whether they come in with a good mood or a bad mood, feel just a little bit better when they leave us. >> Okay, that's 572. >> We're going to go down. >> Well deserved, I might add. >> 572 out of six. That's 572. 575 six. Here's your receipt. We'll call you as soon as it's ready. >> Thank you. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Hi. Is there something I can help you with? >> Well, is there meat in the super taco? >> Oh, there's not just meat in the super taco. There's super meat in the super taco. >> Oh, okay. Well, I'd like a super taco. >> Okay. One super taco. Want something to go with that? Uh, Jumbo Jack, a burrito. I'd have to say that for me, the key thing in customer service is really trying to communicate with a person. And communication is simply a matter of going a little further than just taking an order. It's having a feeling for where someone else is coming from and then acting accordingly. >> And a Jack burrito. Anything else? >> Oh, that the jumbo jack. >> And the jumbo jack, too. I can see you're hungry. All righty. Anything else? >> Well, how about some onion rings? >> Onion rings? All righty. And something to drink. Do >> you have anything diet? >> We have a tab. >> Okay. A large tab. >> A large tab. All righty. >> How about French fries, too? >> French fries, too. Okay. Do you want the regular fries or the super scoop? >> Super scoop. >> Super scoop. I'm not surprised. All right. That is a jumbo jack, a burrito, a taco, a super scoop of French fries, onion rings, and a large tab. Is that for here to go? >> Um, here. >> That's for here. All righty. Jumbo Jack burrito taco super scoop onion rings tax for the governor is $4.24 24 cents. >> I I guess communication also means adding your own personal touch, letting people know that you care, that they're not just another order. >> It makes them feel a little special, and it leaves them with a with a positive feeling about me and about their experience here. >> Here's your receipt. And it's a very pretty coat you have on. >> Thank you. >> You're welcome. Here's your receipt. We'll call you as soon as it's ready. >> Thank you. >> Thanks a lot. Yes, sir. Can I help you, please? Just give me a jack steak, a whole of lettuce, please, and cup of coffee. >> And a cup of coffee. Would you like a big coffee? >> No, medium. Medium. >> Uh, sir, we don't have medium. We just have regular and big coffee. >> All right. Make it baked then. >> Okay. It's a big coffee. Would you like anything with that uh jack steak? Some >> No, that's it. Just what I said. >> Okay. That's a jack steak, hold lettuce, and a big coffee. Is that for here to go? >> I'm going to eat here. Right. Thank you. >> All righty. Sometimes I'll give a customer a compliment or make a menu suggestion and other times communication is simply a matter of knowing when not to chat with a customer >> and just doing a good efficient job of taking an order. >> All right, that's $18 $3 $4 $5. Here's your receipt and we'll call you as soon as that's ready. >> Thank you. Your order, sir. >> Oh, thank you very much. All right. Uh sir, we have your order. That's a double jumbo bonus jack. Two cheeseburgers and a super scoop. Two delicious milks. Uh the strawberry shake and a cup of coffee. Do you want some uh cream and sugar with that coffee? >> No. Okay. Thank you. Things will be much calmer now. >> Oh, good. Enjoy your lunch. >> Hello. What can I get for you today? >> Well, I really don't know. >> Uh would you like me to make some suggestions? Do you happen to have a Caesar salad? >> A Caesar salad? No, I'm afraid we don't. But our our deluxe cheeseburger comes with crispy lettuce and and and tomatoes and onions. >> What um may I ask, is a Moby Jack? >> A Moby Jack is a tender fish sandwich fried crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. And it's served on a fresh bun with a slice of American cheese and our special tartar sauce. And we like to think of it as a whale of a sandwich. Oh, >> very witty. Thank you. >> Sounds like an adventure. I'll have one. >> Communicating is something we all need to do on and off the job. >> It's part of everyday living >> and and the better we become at communicating, the more effective we are with other people, no matter what the situation. >> That's why I look at my experiences in this job as something really beneficial for me. >> Not just now, but in the long run, too. >> Now, for the lady, what would you like? >> Oh, I really don't know. Can you give me a moment? >> Yes, we certainly can. >> Difficult. >> Excuse me. Uh, miss, your order is ready. >> That's one jumbo jack, one burrito, one taco, one super scoop of French fries, onion rings, and a large tab. >> Thank you very much. Enjoy. >> Okay, ma'am. Do you know what you want now? >> Well, I guess I'll have what my husband is having. >> All righty. Very good. That's two Moby Jacks and uh two hot lemon turnovers. And how about something to drink for you? I'll have a strawberry shake. >> Very good. A strawberry shake. Would you like the big one? >> Oh, yes. Why not? >> Why not? Indeed. All righty. That is two Moby Jacks, two hot lemon turnovers, the big strawberry shake, and one pure orange juice. Is that for here to go? >> Oh, well, we'll eat it here. >> Yes, very nice. >> Yes. >> Good. Well, we'll enjoy having you. >> Thank you. Okay, that's $3.71, please. >> Are you sure that's all it is? >> It's incredible, but that's all. >> Okay. Out of Uhhuh. Actually, sir, we we we can't uh uh take any any bills larger than a a 20. Unfortunately, would like to >> uh so if you have something smaller, I never assume that someone's been here before. For instance, I know we cook most of our food to order, but a new customer may not. So, I try to let customers know if they've ordered something that's going to take a few extra minutes and why. >> People seem to appreciate that. >> That'll just take a couple of extra minutes for the fish to cook up just right. >> Why not? >> Thank you, sir. Your jack steak is ready. >> Thank you. Here you are. Your jack steak with extra lettuce and a cup of coffee. >> That's wrong. I'm sorry. >> I ordered a sandwich without lettuce. >> Well, I'm awfully sorry, sir. I thought you said extra lettuce. >> No, I deplore lettuce. >> Well, I'm sorry. Let me get this fixed up for you right away. >> But be sure you make it hot, please. >> Yes, sir. I will do that. >> Can't you ever do anything right here? >> We'll get this right. You watch. Jackie, could you do me a favor? Uh, he didn't want lettuce on his jack. We gave him lettuce. So, if you could take care of that and also make sure that it's hot because he made a specific request. So, just give me a call when it's done. Thank you. Hi, Phil. >> Hi, Barb. How you doing? >> Can I get you something? >> Yeah. Would you happen to have a pair of dry pants? >> Just the ones I have on, unfortunately. How about some >> Most of our business is repeat business, so I feel that getting to know the names of my regular customers is really important. And adding that kind of personal touch has a couple of nice side effects. It makes me feel good, and it speeds my day along. >> Oh, and my manager notices, too. You want a small? >> A small. >> Okay. >> You know, Phil, you really do a good job here. >> Oh, thanks. Hey, you know what? I think I'm going to be made a ship manager pretty soon. >> Great. Congratulations. I'm really happy for you. >> Well, thanks very much. And I'm sorry that I I can't get you a drug. >> Oh, it's okay. [laughter] I'll settle for some good food. >> You got it. [music] Deadly Dangers featuring an array of horrors so incredibly ordinary you'll think it could happen to you. You'll thrill to the unknown terror of poor security and the deadly dangers that lurk just outside the back door. >> [music] [music] >> We have to keep this door locked. It's our best hope of security. >> But security alone isn't [music] enough. for there are other deadly dangers already at work [music] inside the store. >> Careful, Ted. The floor's awful slippery. >> Hey, [music] >> I'm as sure-footed as John Travolta. >> Well, I think flatter heels would be a lot safer around here. >> Hey, it's style that counts to me. >> Well, at least you better walk flatfooted till the floor dries. >> You worry too much. You'll [music] cringe in horror at the workings of the insidious tomato slicer. >> Here, Ted, you better use this safety tub. This thing can really hurt your fingers. >> Don't worry, Tina. My way is easier. Quicker, too. But the deadly dangers [music] have only just begun, and they lurk in the most unexpected places. >> Ted, wait. You may not know it, but you're flirting with a deadly danger. But me? Let me show you how to lift this without injuring your back. For safety sake, use the strength of your legs. Not your back. >> Ah, safety's for suckers. There's nothing wrong with my back. [clears throat] [music] >> There's something wrong with my back. >> And there's even more. You'll watch breathless with fear as the inattent of young Kasanova flirts with 375 [music] degree terror. Hey Tina, did I ever tell you about the time I jumped my motorcycle over the Caspian Sea? >> You better watch yourself, Ted. Those friars are no place to fool around. [music] >> And just when you think you've seen it all, the bubbling frier threatens to bring down the house forever. >> Oh no. The hell fire. [music] Call the fire department. >> Hey, where's the fire? Don't you know water only spread a grease fire? Ted, pull the O-ring for the fryer. If you have a weak heart or dainty stomach, there are only three ways to cope with deadly [music] dangers. Be aware, be alert, and always be prepared. Maybe you can escape the gut-wrenching grip of deadly dangers. But remember, they're coming to a Jack in the Box store near you. [music]
