for is for that all right I think I I think I got it um so I was going to try again to use uh the restream software The restream Studio software and today was having an annoying problem so I'm back to my old OBS solution um there shouldn't be any Tech problems because we've been doing this solution for more than a thousand episodes uh and so hopefully this is fine um but I will be trying out that new tech solution tomorrow because tomorrow is uh our thousand minute show and we'll just keep trying and trying and trying uh anyways I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where for some reason I decided to explain to you a whole bunch of stuff that uh um if you don't know who I am you're like what is this guy talking about anyways here I am uh we watch old 16 mm fil 16 mm films you think by my doing this a thousand times that I would know how to intro this um and that was uh China's children and I have quite a few films that actually look at children in China at different times in [Music] um educational so we have from the 30s although someone in the comments thinks that that film was from the 20s which is totally possible uh early on stock footage would be routinely reused um with very little attention paid to when it was uh relevant um somebody's like oh somebody shot this footage in the early 20s it's it's 10 years old but nobody knows it's China China didn't change um but then I have from the 40s 50s 60s 7s and 80s um because that is interesting you look at a child in the culture you get a sense of the culture I think that's the uh impression all right so behind me I have a film scanner set up but you can't see it because stuff yeah I have to reset a bunch of things so there it is there it is right there um yeah let's watch a film this is Auto Repair the costly ride enjoy [Music] [Music] in the earliest days of that complicated invention known as the automobile we found that it didn't run forever in fact it needs fixing from time to time that's why car owners should know something about automotive repair today there are many honest garages and competent mechanics but if the car owner doesn't know how to deal with them or if he should get a dishonest garage or an incompetent mechanic well it can all add up to a costly [Music] ride the largest number of complaints to Consumer Affairs bureaus deal with automobile servicing but this is hardly surprising after all repairing an automobile is a real mystery to the average driver Auto Repair is a very technical feeli that leaves most of us depend depent on those who understand [Music] it what's your opinion on the subject Jim uh a Jim oh hi what was that you said why is auto repair such a consumer problem well there are a lot of reasons really I guess you could say it was a combination of the mechanic the driver and the garage system itself how's that well to start with most garages pay their mechanics a commission on work done rather than a straight sour oh so the more they find wrong with a car the more they make well that's true but overcharges are not always the mechanic's fault many times it's the customer who's to blame the customer that's right they don't always approach a mechanic like the professional he is they come on like the pro and ask for costly or unnecessary repairs Without Really knowing what's wrong well it's been acting a little sluggish just needs a good tuneup well what's it been doing well lots of things it just needs a complete tuneup okay his problem could be as simple and inexpensive as a clogged air filter okay complete tuneup new points new plugs check the carburetor the customer should only give the symptoms and let the mechanic decide what's wrong as you said approach him as a professional exactly and be specific well the engine starts cutting out on me when I get over 30 m an hour is this when it's hot or cold or usually after it warms up does it make any strange sounds in this yeah knocking and it misses when I step on the gas just tell him as accurately as possible what the car has been doing uh not what you think is wrong huh that's right take a test drive with him if you have trouble describing [Music] it and be sure he gets it down exactly as you tell it to him or better yet give him your own list and whether it's the service manager or the mechanic get a copy of the service order then you'll be sure yeah it's always a good idea to get a copy of the service order and the estimate too well let's get really to the Crux of the matter what's the best way or ways to select a garage well one way is to try the Better Business Bureau ask about the garage's reputation hello I was called about the roads garage I was going to have some work done there and I was wondering if they were a reputable uh then you know to look elsewhere if a number of people have complained of unsatisfactory work something else you might do is ask your friends see if they have a garage or a mechanic they're happy with a well-treated customer is your best recommend recommendation you also might look for a garage whose mechanics have this certification what's it stand for for the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence which means which means that the mechanic who wears this patch is qualified to repair your car at least on those parts he's passed tests for but this doesn't necessarily certify the whole garage that's true another Safeguard is to look for the sign of the automotive service Council this is a self-reg organization dedicated to service Excellence membership garages are located Nationwide and they guarantee their work what about finding a garage that pays its mechanics a straight salary instead of a commission I've heard that recommended the idea is a mechanic on salary is not going to race the clock to get as much work done as possible but in a competent garage that commission scale can work for you uh how's that the labor cost is Guided by what is known as the flat rate service manual even if the mechanic takes longer you will only be charged the average repair time and you can find out beforehand how much a repair will cost then if you think you've been overcharged on a repair you can ask to see the flat rate manual that's right but now no matter what kind of garage you choose make sure that the mechanic or the service manager understands clearly what you want done Studies have shown that poor Communications are a major source of consumer [Music] problem okay let's say you've selected your garage given them all the information got your order and estimate all squared away and then you get a call like this well it doesn't look like those seals are going to do it you need another transmission now what do you do well if you're called with a revised estimate that varies a great deal from the first it's not a good idea to automatically agree to it all of the parts have had it it's got a lot of miles on it lot of wear these things do wear out you know well what will this involve uh-huh how much will that cost sure most people will agree to more repairs just to get their car back as soon as possible that's just the point before you agree if you can get a second opinion but it's in my op op I would go with a new transmission you mean there can be quite a variation in price that's right call them up get their prices especially on what you know will be an expensive job yes I'd like to talk to your service manager please hello I'd like to know how much it would cost to replace a transmission and when you call a garage be specific about just what it is you want done so a proper estimate can be made okay now after you get your car back what if the repair bill doesn't itemize the parts and labor how are you to know exactly what the charges are ask the mechanic or service manager for an explanation of all work done well now this part is the uh uh let's see um that's just a couple of bolts oh the bolt did you replace the bolt yeah we put in some new ones they were rather corroded oh I see yeah it's totally within your rights to question anything you don't understand it's your car and your money what about a test drive before paying the bill well if it's necessary they'll do that without being asked but you can always take it out for a test drive [Music] yourself [Music] and if the car is still acting up take it back to him immediately and tell him to fix it okay now to change the subject what about outright dishonesty well you'll find that in any field unfortunately there are a few mechanics who play on your fear and lack of knowledge well I checked out your shock absorbers and they're really in bad condition you know driving your car with shocks in this condition is very very dangerous you're just going to have to replace them now it so happens I can give you a good deal on some new shocks sometimes it's really hard to know then a lot of it comes down to finding an honest mechanic well that's important sure but that's not the biggest problem you know you know in states where the consumer Bureau checks out complaints they found that the greatest number can be traced to simple incompetence even the most honest mechanic can misdiagnose a problem but it still overheats Bill even when I just drive it to the store I put in a new radiator water pump hoses even a thermostat well then what else could it be well maybe a hairline crack in the block and if the driver doesn't understand mechanics as most of us don't what can one do about it well it's generally not that bad most cars are fixed right the first time but not [Music] always if it isn't fixed right first take it back to the garage if you can't get SA satisfaction there are steps you can take like what contact the consumer affairs Department the Better Business Bureau or as a last resort take them to small claims court if they're in the wrong most garages will settle quickly if you threaten to take action I've heard some authorities recommend that you mark the parts you no need replacing if you have any suspicions sure you can do that then it's easy to see if the part you're being charged for has been replaced what about those amazingly inexpensive specials like a break job for 1995 is that a good way for the consumer to save money avoid them usually the idea is to get your car up on the rack and then find something a little more costly that needs to be fixed oh boy it sure would be nice to know exactly what needs fixing before you went to a garage well that's possible uh how check around in your city to see if there are any diagnostic Centers for a small fee you can have your car checked over by an impartial mechanic you can find out just what needs to be fixed and save a lot of money in the long run that's right we've talked a lot about mechanics and garages but what can we do on our own to save money and maintain our car well first of all don't abuse [Music] it remember that your car is a complicated piece of machinery and for starters you can get to know basic auto maintenance you know how to change the oil and oil filter remove a tire things like that another way to save money is to follow your owner's manual instructions closely well have your car serviced when it says to you'll save a lot in corrective repairs that way what if you've lost your manual well you can ride to the dealer or directly to the factory for a new one I've been told that keeping a repair log helps yes it does keep a list of all repairs done no matter how M of the service this way you'll know when a part needs replacing or service and you can avoid being sold unnecessary parts and labor so there is a lot you can do yes there is and most of it is just good Common Sense car problems have been around as long as cars themselves it's a pretty complicated machine prevention and Care are always cheaper than the Cure however there are times when only a garage or mechanic can do the job if you have an auto problem and go about it the right way you can get good work done yes and avoid the costly [Music] ride wow that was great I love it all right so I'm going to be talking as I uh switch up for the next film this is will be something that I'll be practicing uh for tomorrow because I'll be doing this a lot um and if I could get a remote webcam I would set it up so you can see the threading process but I don't have that feuture right now so we're going to do it so I pull the film off the shelf um film has it's usually taped down there is you see there's leader at the beginning and this says where it's from this is from Appalachia IMS uh Holly holidaysburg Pennsylvania and this was um for those of you who saw my friend Jerry not Gary Jerry yesterday he uh he went with me we rented a big truck and picked up a bunch of films in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania and then I drove a 25 ft truck filled with films uh and it was a nightmare I had to drive up and down mountain ranges I had to um drive through the Beltway in DC in the middle of a torrential rainstorm um and that's when I realized like you know wow no one's letting me in no one's letting me in to merge I'm like oh if I just start turn on my my uh turn signal and start just heading over into that lane people will let you in cuz you're a giant truck and they don't have any other choice so uh that's what I learned about um being aggressive and it was also a I think it was like a 15 gear truck which I didn't know how to drive they probably should not have uh rented it to me but they did and so I was [Music] like all right so anyways I threaded up the film this next film is called where is it uh science science skills interpreting data science skills interpreting data okay enjoy d [Music] [Music] did you ever think about the creatures that live in a pond the frogs that live among the lily [Music] pads the crayfish that live in the mud at the bottom and even the fish that may lurk under the surface of the water each one in its own way is adapted to the pond environment they live in a water world so their lives probably depend on the quality of the water in the pond do you Suppose there are any fish living in this Pond let's do some scientific investigating of the water perhaps we can find out if fish could live here and where in the pond they might be first we'll collect as much data about the water as we can then we'll interpret the data to see what inferences we can draw from it then we'll test those inferences by additional observations perhaps from this we can develop a hypothesis or tentative Theory this hypothesis can then be tested and proved or disproved by further observations we'll pay particular attention to these scientific skills today we know that animals including those that live in water need oxygen to survive so if there's enough oxygen in a pond there should be animal life including fish in it pollution in a pond usually reduces oxygen so perhaps we can start by finding out if this Pond contains any pollution first let's draw a map of the pond if we draw this map on graph paper we can use the xaxis and the Y AIS for measuring distances let's say that the pond is 50 m long and 30 m wide [Music] [Music] now if you want a sample of the water from the middle of the pond you would go half the length of the pond along the xais then you would go half the width on the Y AIS if you draw a perpendicular line out from each of these two points they'd meet at the middle of the pond wouldn't they these lines are called coordinates two or more lines which come together to give a fixed position at the pond we can line up two stakes on the shore for each coordinate as long as we can see that the two stakes are lined up we know that we're on one of the coordinates [Music] [Music] a what is water pollution a pond is polluted when it contains too much of any substance such as poisonous chemicals or sewage which will threaten the Natural Life of the pond you can inspect the water and test for these poisonous chemicals and sewage then you can test to see if the water is acid or alkaline line or neutral you may remember that this test is also used on soil and is called a pH test it'll help determine if plants can grow naturally in a pond you should also test for dissolved oxygen in the water to see if there is enough for the natural animal life this data seems to indicate that there is no serious amount of pollution the pH test was neutral which is a good condition for plants and there are about nine parts per million of dissolved oxygen which is adequate for animal life we took samples here here and here since there appears to be little pollution can we draw the inference that there are many different forms of life including fish living in this pond we can test this inference by observing some of the animals that live here but first let's think about what animals we might find this is a creature called a rat tailed maggot it's the larval stage of a drone fly the tube which extends to the surface allows it to breathe air now why do you suppose it needs a tube like that well creatures that live part or all of their lives underwater usually get the oxygen they need from the water but the rat tailed maggot often is found in polluted water where there is very little oxygen so it must get its oxygen from the air this creature is called a fairy shrimp it's often found in a pond with fresh clean water from which it can get the oxygen so the type of creature you find in a pond will help you determine whether or not it's polluted these are some of the animals we found in the pond pray f F this is a red M which is closely related to the spiders a mosquito larvae and the fairy shrimp there is even Plankton microscopic plant and animal life which provides food for the smaller animals none of these creatures could live in a heavily polluted Pond part of our inference is correct but shouldn't there also be fish in this Pond one way to test this idea is to look for them but to investigate the fish we need more data we should find out more about the oxygen and other chemicals in the water and we need some data on the temperature at different positions perhaps with this kind of information we can develop a hypothesis or tentative theory about the fish then we can test that hypothesis to see if it's right or [Music] wrong data like this can be valuable for several different reasons for example you may remember that if plant life is to survive there must be ample amounts of carbon dioxide present this is true both on land and in water the plant combines this carbon dioxide with water by using the energy from sunlight this produces sugars which the plant uses as food in the process the plant releases oxygen during daylight hours in into the surrounding water all animals absorb oxygen and give off carbon dioxide which the plants can use the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen between plants and animals is fundamental to the survival of both other chemicals are present in the pond in small amount among them nitrogen is important in the growth of plants calcium is important especially to shelled animals in growing their shells phosphates are important as a plant fertilizer but the most important chemical for the animal life in the pond is oxygen so let's look at the data we took our water samples and temperature readings at these coordinates at 515 that's about 5 m from Shore along this Cor coordinate at 1515 at 2515 which is right in the middle then here at 3515 and at 4515 notice how the oxygen seems to be more concentrated in the middle of the pond notice also how the temperature of the water seems to be lower at the middle let's see if we can make a hypothesis where the temperature of a pond is lowest the concentration of oxygen is highest and since fish like all animals need oxygen they will be found at that point in the pond we can test this hypothesis with additional observations and tests of the water but now we must be careful to identify all variables and to control them we're going to make further tests of the oxygen and temperature of this Pond but this time we'll increase the number of positions and we'll test the water at these positions on three different days we'll also take the water temperature at each position we'll make some notes about the weather conditions each day and we'll measure the depth of the pond at each [Music] position you probably remember that one way to interpret data is to use a graph a graph is a way of comparing variables in this graph we are comparing oxygen and distance and in this graph we are comparing temperature and distance on day number one position a at 5 m from Shore had 7.5 parts per million of oxygen in the water position B at 10 m had 8.0 do you remember what we call the variable of distance that we've plotted here on the x axis it's the manipulated variable and what do you call the other variable on the Y AIS the amount of oxygen and the temperature are both called a responding variable because they respond to the manipulated variable the weather is a variable held constant because all tests made on one day were made under the same weather conditions on day number one the water was colder at the middle of the pond and the oxygen count was higher there on day number two the water was colder at the East End probably because a strong Breeze pushed the warm surface water to one end and allowed the colder bottom water to rise at the other end once again the oxygen level was higher where the water was colder on day number three the temperature and the oxygen both seemed to be quite evenly distributed the data and the three graphs seem to support part of our hypothesis where the water is colder the oxygen level is higher but now how do we determine if that's where the fish can be found well using our map of the pond and the depth readings we made we can construct a three-dimensional graph of the pond now we're looking at the pond at an angle we've tilted the graph 30° and we're looking at it from the corner to add the third dimension we now have a z-axis we measure the depth on this axis [Music] now we can begin to see the underwater Contour of the pond we can also see that the pond is very deep at the middle which may be one reason the water is sometimes colder at the middle now let's review what we' found out about interpreting data and testing inferences and hypotheses today we started by collecting data on the pollution in the pond we interpreted the data and Drew an inference that there was considerable life in the pond we tested the inference by making some observations we found the inference to be true so we collected more data we then interpreted the data and developed a hyp hypothesis about the relationship between temperature oxygen and fish we then tested the hypothesis by making further observation but do we really know if there are fish in this Pond and where to find them well we'll still need to make some further observations for that [Music] all right where are we where am I I'm not visible there I am um yeah so I have a whole series of those maybe we'll watch another one of those tomorrow that'll be exciting uh so what am what are we watching tomorrow what are we doing tomorrow tomorrow is actually even though we had the thousandth episode on Wednesday we've decided to celebrate um the fact that we did a thousand shows since the beginning of covid and uh so uh my assistant kaan was like why don't you do a thousand minute show I was like thousand minutes like one of oh yeah that's like 16 hours and 40 minutes that's doable that's not quite 24 hours which is grueling and I have done in the past but it's it's you know and it's just before Christmas and so tomorrow uh we're going to start at 9:00 in the morning uh Eastern Standard Time so you will see me I will be blurry eyed and hopefully things will run okay um and we'll run until I don't know 2:30 something yeah I need to I kind of have to figure that out um but we'll just watch films all day and we'll have guests and I'm going to actually uh uh thread up the film The the next film um and we'll try try to run everything from the scanner unless it explodes and then we'll have to come up with a plan B but um yeah we'll just watch a bunch of films all day and I'll have people in the studio uh in this in the archive really um coming and I will have people uh zooming in or virtually here so maybe some found footage Festival guys will show up and they've made some requests uh also um some other friends and people that have been on the show in the past so uh that will be exciting and a quote unquote musical performance uh not really musical more visually assaultive um thing uh a project that I did a long time ago with my friend Ian uh back when uh early in the early days of a Geeks uh it was part of of a collective called Whiffle Fist and we did this thing that was a bunch of repetition and audio loops and we've extended it and now it's going to be audio and video Loops so um yeah that's what we're going to be doing so this next film uh inadvertently I just pulled it off the shelf cuz I haven't seen it and that's what we're probably going to be doing a lot of Tomorrow is pulling stuff off the shelf um and uh this one I the top of the letter December the 1st 19 she's been dead for over 5 years Derek she's not coming back you have to face up to that fact otherwise you you'll go around the bend you're right you know tapping uh uh Tona candidates choosing what to make enjoy now what going make for your mama all you have is your paper and glue you might want to make her flower pot but I'm afraid that won't do cuz you put in the dirt you pour on the water and the Paper Pot would fall apart with your paper and glue what you probably should do is make her a real fancy card now what you going to make for your daddy when all you have is a big lump of clay you might want to make him a real nice C for his birthday your Valentine's Day the Cs made of clay our allmighty thi and enes are kind of thin so listen why not make your clay to a pot for him to grow daisies in what you make depends a lot on what you've got to make it out of you better think about just a little before you start wondering how do you do it now what you're going to make for your brother when all you have is a big box of paint you might want to make him a nice batch of cookies and figure you'll get no complaint cookies made out of paper and paint wheel they don't taste much like a cookie should taste you'd be better off painting a picture of him the cookies would all go to waste you got mil and flower and EGS a pain what you should think of making it makes a Massy pain let me tell you you'd be better off a little bacon if you want to make Ace better start off with the right I think you'll turn out okay if you want to make
