that for that hold on hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show all right so I'm hoping uh we're still trying the software um and hopefully I am my audio is in sync um because that was a problem yesterday because there were three places that a microphone could potentially come up and each one of them could introduce some sort of thing oh yeah I was eating some Ramen so wipe the ramen off my beard all right uh so that was um uh C in Australia 60 millimeter film and um let's watch this uh cornet film about Spanish influences in the United States enjoy [Music] this is the Smith home in a suburban community in the middle west today is Saturday and the Smith children Dolores and Don are catching up on some reading here's the package that Dolores has been expecting from Uncle Rick in California he wrote and told her he was sending a [Music] present it's a doll a beautiful Spanish Doll Dolores has never seen this kind of a doll before people in California wear clothes like these perhaps her brother Don can explain it's an interesting story you see even today costumes like this are worn occasionally in those parts of our country where Spanish influence is still strong these costumes of old Spain are worn for special occasions in some American cities that celebrate their Spanish origin yes the language the dress and the Romantic customs of Spain have left their influence on our way of life even the names of the original Spanish settlers remain in our towns and cities but how and where did this Spanish culture reach our country it was Columbus who brought the flag of Spain to the new world when he landed in the West Indies some years later the Spanish settled on the peninsula which they named Florida there they founded the town of St Augustine today St Augustine almost 400 years old reminds us that the Spanish were the very first to bring European civilization to the new world the castle of San Marcos is the oldest standing fortification in our country its thick walls show The Importance which the Spanish put upon military power the early Spanish explorers were not farmers and workers but soldiers wherever they went they planted their flag as conquerors or as they called themselves conquistadores the West Indies and Florida were among the earliest region settled by the Spanish before 1600 the conquistadores had occupied Mexico and were pushing into the land they named New Mexico this was the Southwest the second region of our country to come under Spanish influence today the governor's Palace in Santa Fe looks much as it did when it was the head quarters of the Spanish government in the southwest there are many traces of this Spanish life for example the Town Plaza or open Square which the Spanish used was a typical feature of Spanish Town planning another feature of Spanish life was the church wherever they went the Spanish established their religion in addition to their government town planning and religion the Spanish brought their system of and ownership the unit of this system was the asenda the asenda was actually a community under control of the asend or Spanish owner to their new lands in the southwest the Spanish brought horses and sheep and Longhorn cattle Longhorns were the first cattle to set foot on American Shores brought by the Spanish in 1521 they spread rapidly and were the beef cattle in the Earth early days of our West today modern cattle breeds have replaced the Longhorns and the modern American Rancher has taken the place of the Spanish asend our ranching industry owes much to the Spanish who were the very first to bring horses and cattle to our Western ranges even our word Ranch comes from the Spanish word Rancho in Spain the cattle herder rode on horseback and was called a vakero in our country the word vakero became vakaro the American Cowboy he still uses the sombrero or big hat to shade his eyes the lariat to rope the cattle and sometimes shaps to protect his legs from Thorns did you know that these are Spanish words Lariat means the Rope shaps are from the Spanish chaos and Sombrero means shade and there are many more Spanish words that we use alala a royal a dry gully Canyon Corral which means fenced in yard Pinto which means painted and the well-known word guitar all these are Spanish words in fact as Don remed Dolores there are several hundred words of Spanish origin that we use in our language every day and there is more to the story of Spanish influence for instance in our ranching industry the method of identifying livestock is The Branding of the animals with the owner's Mark or brand Spanish Brands were used in Mexico as early as 1545 from there they were introduced into our country and the system is still used on our ranches to to day we have seen how the Spanish settled in Florida and in the southwest the third area of our country occupied by the Spanish was California the story of early California is also the story of Father Junipero s he was a Spanish priest or Padre under his leadership 21 missions were founded in California the missions were units of the Catholic church and were the centers of of Spanish civilization in the new world surrounded by Gardens and Farms which the Padres tended each mission was a self-supporting community at the missions many Indians were converted to the Catholic faith not only in California but wherever the Spanish went missions were built so successful were the Padres in establishing these Frontier settlements that they were sometimes called the Conquistador of the cross from the mission towns have grown many of our well-known cities San Antonio El Paso Santa Fe Tucson San Diego Los Angeles San Francisco and Santa Barbara from the missions 2 Has Come A distinct style of architecture notice how the Twin Towers the arched windows and the plain stucco walls of the mission style have been adopted in this modern post office of Los Angeles here is Spanish architecture in the modern Courthouse of Santa Barbara typical things to look for in this attractive style are the tower the arched windows and plain stucco walls the open Arcade and the arched doorway with its carved decoration you can see the Spanish style in many different kinds of buildings in libraries in schools in churches and in homes throughout the United States an important characteristic of Spanish architecture is contrast between the simple and the elaborate the plain stule walls are often set off by decoration such as the colored tiles over this doorway or delicate rot iron grills over the windows sometimes this rot iron work is used to decorate a Charming balcony or a staircase color is also used for contrast in the Spanish style the stucco walls are a pale background for the bright colors of the decorative tiles red roofing tiles are another colorful feature of Spanish architecture they were used in most Spanish buildings and you've probably seen roofs of this kind in your own town even today this kind of tile is called Spanish tile the typical Spanish house is built around an open court or patio the warm climate of Florida the southwest and California made it possible for the Spanish to build and use the same kind of house that they had known in Spain to their new homes in America the Spanish even brought their type of furniture pieces such as this beautifully carved chest and this chair typical of Spanish furniture is this claw foot which is often used on our own tables and chairs many indeed are the ways in which the Spanish influenced our country their dress their language their Customs their architecture and their religion are all part of a way of life that has been called the most romantic and beautiful culture ever developed in the United States today's Spanish influence can be found in every part of our country yes it's right here in the Smith home as Dolores has just realized their house is of Spanish style there is the stule the round Arch and the red tile roof and Don reminds Dolores that her own name Dolores is Spanish and so she has learned a few of the many things that have come from Spain to us yes even some of our music shows the same influence the Spanish influence that has become a part of our own daily [Music] lives that's pretty great um I have copies of that that are in black and white but that was uh one of the ones that we got that is in beautiful Cod Chrome uh so behind me oh wait no we'll just do this uh we showed uh the other day um all right man you're gonna be on camera now all right so um here is a longtime friend of mine Jerry uh who I was already collecting films by the time you knew me you just started yeah no I think it was long before that oh really yeah cuz I was still in college thousand yet oh yeah yeah yeah yeah by the time I moved here I was 10,000 oh yeah so I I helped you pick up some of those 10,000 too up in Pennsylvania that's right in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania yeah that was right all right um enough of his talking he showed up un announc all right uh let's see what was I gonna watch oh yeah we watched uh English on the job reading skills or no other other ones in the series this is the reading skills one enjoy [Music] on most jobs there's some type of reading that people are required to do and to get the most out of reading there are certain skills that you can develop let's see what these reading skills are and see how they can pay off for you in getting and holding a job if you're not certain now of what kind of future job you'd like to have one good place to find information is from a book like the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the US government developed reading skills can help you get important information from a book of this size very rapidly would you just plow through it reading everything no you'd probably take a quick look at the table of contents to see what's in the book and what interests you [Music] [Music] this occupation might be interesting to you since this is a long article you may want to skim it first authors often design material to Aid you in skimming there's bold type photographs and even charts after skimming you may want to go back and reread more carefully look for key words that will help you define the occupations more clearly key words like training Outlook earnings employment additional information once you have an idea of the type of job you're after reading skills can help you get the job think of the want ad section of the newspaper how do you quickly find the listings you're interested in WR first you skim picking up key [Music] words suppose you're interested in a sales job now is the time to read carefully you need to separate the words used to attract your attention from those that really describe the job evaluating what you read is another important reading skill evaluating helps you recognize meaningless words meaningless words like fabulous what does fabulous tell you about the product nothing it doesn't tell you what the product is you have to supply your own imagination and you could be wrong evaluating as you read helps you get clear meaning from descriptive words the word possible tells you that the salary is not guaranteed it's not fixed on commmission means you get a percentage of how much you sell being on a Commission job means that turn Downs cost you income you might prefer to work on a straight salary evaluating carefully as you read helps you get a fuller picture of each job within ads there are often descriptive words that help you understand these words all communicate specific information but how about these words they also communicate but not as specifically as the first group what's a lovely office what's an exciting job this could be an exciting job to some people only this kind could be exciting to others whatever you read you need to take the time to think about the words and what they really mean after locating a job you'll use more more reading skills when you start applying for it first of all you'll probably be given an application blank let's look at the application carefully before you fill it out skim this gives you a general idea of the information that's required when you begin reading it carefully try to get every detail reading for details is a skill that's important in filling out any type of form read more slowly than usual or even reread if you have to don't write until you're certain of the instructions you might have to ask questions don't be afraid to reading carefully and asking questions about what you don't understand can keep you from having to rewrite so much being able to read carefully for details helps you complete forms correctly reading skills will help you in finding and applying for jobs and they'll help you perform them suppose the boss is giving you more responsibility and wants you to learn how to operate a different machine of the plant all you have to go on is your own mechanical experience and the machine's manual how can you put reading skills to work right start by skimming go through the table of contents to see what to expect look at the main divisions and subdivisions of the printed page familiarizing yourself with material before you read carefully makes the actual reading easier for you when you begin reading carefully for details study the charts and diagrams apply them to the actual machine comparing and checking what you read help you to understand the details and remember when reading to be aware of the headings and other key words that you noticed while skimming keywords help you organize the material as you read and help you remember it better much of the reading you do on the job is essentially made up of key ideas memos are like that let's isolate the key words and phrases in this memo it's to all Personnel from Mr Smith the controller the subject of the memo is the new loss report form the form has four copies white yellow gold and green the yellow copy goes to this room green is held in this department the gold copy is forwarded to this department the white goes to room 607 the claims office where it's used to fill out form 5B by being able to find the key words you're able to separate the essential information from the non-essential this helps you get the meaning of even complicated orders and makes it easy for you to follow them correctly with any on the job reading keep alert for important words and phrases reading slowly helps you find important words but reading everything slowly would be a waste of time and that's another important reading skill knowing when to vary your speed a beauty magazine is generally easy reading you can read it rapidly without much loss of retention however directions on a beauty preparation are more complicated directions need to be read more slowly even if you just want to get a general idea of the procedure good readers are skillful in adjusting their speed to their purpose if your purpose should change say now you want to carefully follow the directions you'd read even more slowly than you did to get general information slow careful reading helps prevent mistakes if what you're reading is quite complex occasionally you might find an unfamiliar word it's a good idea not to read on try to find the meaning sometimes the other words it's used with the context might help you with the meaning or you might make a mental note of the word and look it up later there are many ways of finding the meaning of a word the dictionary is only one reference books are other sources or you might get the meaning of a word just by asking a more experienced co-worker learning new words helps you build your onth job vocabulary it also helps you get the full meaning of what you are reading another way to get the full meaning of your reading is to summarize summarize material in your own words after you've read difficult material once it might be helpful for you to reread it rereading is like skimming you should do it quickly just slow down enough to read carefully the portions that are particularly detailed or confusing whenever reading is important to you on your job use your skills skim the material first look for key words and [Music] phrases evaluate and summarize the material in your own words when you read unfamiliar words find out their [Music] meaning when you're through Reading decide whether you need to read the material a second [Music] time by improving your on the- job reading you can increase your job skills and that may mean a better job a promotion or a bigger [Music] paycheck that was great I I want to find more in that series um I think we we've seen three so far but um yeah it's great to see because they certainly cover the subject let me move this a little bit I'm using the the camera in the house the internal camera you see like I hold my hands up everything turns blue this thing sucks out of syn he says really I don't know I don't know what to tell you um all right um I'm all I woke up at four o'clock this morning so uh yeah maybe this is uh I'm trying to think like the it's possible that the browser is getting overwhelmed and um so there's all these issues related to that I'm not sure but okay so let's go ahead and watch something I have on the scanner uh this is new tools for learning enjoy [Applause] how do you measure the achievement of a Nation if you want to know how we're really doing where do you look maybe that's a question with more than just one answer maybe you have to take one thing at a time and ask how we're handling that problem take food for example that's an important problem how are we doing there take a look at our Farms the quantity and quality of our output surpass anything ever seen before and how about industrial production that's probably where we do the most remarkable job of all this is the kind of thing we have a special neck for we have a right to be proud of our performance as Builders and makers of goods how about Transportation the same story really more than 200,000 M of railroads 300 mph planes by the thousands 40 million cars and trucks or look what we've done with health physical well-being tremendously improved life expectancy at the highest level in history by far and how have we managed to do all this we provided tools for the job farm tools to multiply our output per acre giant machines to multiply our output per man when it comes to moving people and goods we have the tools to do it on a grand scale we have every right to be proud of our performance in these areas of our national life but what about the education of our children let's look at that problem have we the same right to be proud of what we are doing for them every school day of the year 30 million young people enter the classrooms of our schools never before in our history has the school population been so big never before have we had greater need for knowledge or wisdom or understanding today's school generation must be trained to face a complex rapidly changing World think of it a moment it is a world that has seen the coming of the atomic bomb and all the problems that go with it it is a world in which supersonic speeds are commonplace it is a world that in a span of little more than 20 years saw [Music] this and then this it has seen the first attempt in history at World organization and the fate of a second attempt still hangs in the balance it has seen extreme economic depression and high economic Prosperity it has seen the rise of the total State the dictator and the mass man it is a world that has revealed whole new areas of knowledge it is a world of New Sensations new excitements new distractions the Thrills of Motion Pictures the tense drama of radio the Vivid presentations of Television so much to be learned by so many in so little time that is the problem and what money Manpower and tools are we providing for this job this is a question we must address to every aspect of the problem school buildings equipment teachers loads teacher salaries the training of teachers and the tools for learning the supremely important job of teaching deserves the best we can provide more books and better ones more audiovisual materials and better ones more teaching materials of all kinds each suited to a special task of communication for education is communication it is the communication's problem we consider here we want to explore the tools of audiovisual education and especially the educational motion picture why try to explain the workings of a gasoline engine with words and gestures alone when films can do it this way the four Cycles are intake compression explosion exhaustion why depend entirely upon verbal explanations and static drawings to portray life in for lands when Motion Pictures can do this work very hard everyone must help with the work if the camp is to be ready by Night we must have books to teach the great events of history but why use books alone when films can help so much to make these events come alive so many needing to learn so much in so little time how do these new audiovisual tools measure up to this job well let's see here is the classroom of Miss mild Mahoney of the University of Chicago laboratory school to most of these primary grade children Farm Life had been vague and remote then one day they saw a film about a fair in the line at last the choice is made the judges work is done he has picked the winners well the Champion's Blue Ribbon goes to a girl Johnny gets a ribbon too his C is a winner here are some of the activities that grew out of the common experience of the class making a model is only one activity growing out of the film showing books especially designed to go with a film help the pupils to read about the experience with e and with understanding Johnny Goes to the barn he shines the horns of his C besides using the film readers the pupils took a great deal of interest in other books dealing with the animals the farm and other things related to what they saw in the film some wanted to put the story into their own words some Drew pictures just as these City youngsters went to a fair by means of films they can use films to gain Rich experience and a wide variety of other subject areas the world of physical things how do gears work the world of science and technology how is nylon made the world of living things young animals the rich past of colonial times the world of the Arts how do you draw a good picture the world of handicrafts how does a loom work and the world of people young people like themselves in Norway in England and young people in Italy these children are learning to understand the world they live in through films the general science class of Mr PL Whitaker University School Bloomington Indiana now we have a pretty good list of questions you think of any other points that we ought to see in this film on television Pamela what makes the electrons or whatever they're called come together and form the shape for the picture that's what I don't understand good let's add that what makes the shape or pattern of the picture is there anything else well then let's see the film Don will you close the shades at the base of the tube is a filament fitting over the filament is the cathode a cylinder coated with Earth oxides around the cathode is a shield called the controlled grid next are two anodes this is only one of many science films from a comprehensive Library which includes motion pictures on physics motion pictures on chemistry films on biology teachers like Mr Whitaker have found that their investment in the use of films has yielded Rich returns in promoting interest clarifying difficult Concepts and increasing the effectiveness of [Music] teaching the history class of Mr John Hamburg Edon Wisconsin Public Schools it is therefore that the older I grow the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment and to pay attention to the Judgment of others sir I cannot help expressing a wish that every member of the convention who may still have objections to it would with me doubt a little of his infallibility and to make manifest our unanimity put his name to this [Applause] instrument any comments yes Bob I guess I was surprised to see Franklin so willing to admit that he might be wrong sometimes anyone want to comment on that well I think the film makes clear from the beginning that Franklin was a scientist as well as a Statesman you know that's a very impressive thing about the founders of our government they were men of really broad interests to Mr hamburg's class men like Franklin Jefferson and many many others are not just vague historical figures but Vivid personalities they have met in a very meaningful sense through films and so too with their entire study of American History films give it a new dimension films textbooks and other materials reinforcing each other when the period of the movement Westward was being studied this film was used in a century and a half a frontier people had remade a continent virtually all productive land at another point in the course there was a film dealing with the second world [Music] [Applause] war after that a film on the United Nations the independent member states of the United Nations seek by means of these five great bodies to maintain the peace discussions like this are typical of the interests that films help create I don't see how you can talk about degrees of democracy and despotism like the film said either you have a democracy or you haven't that's what I think too if it's just a matter of degree then all systems are the same that's not what the film said the point was that you can't just go around using words like democracy seeing deism without knowing what they mean that's right one of the first things any dictator tries to do is fool the people with words they don't understand and get all excited about some people can't evenise if I may get in a word here there are two distinctly different types of questions involved one is a question of fact what did the film actually say the other is a question of opinion should we believe what the film said we ought to be able to settle the first question rather easily can we see the film again shall we see it again Charlie are you all [Applause] set the sixth grade class of Mrs Bessie southcom of the Cincinnati Ohio public schools a call for me on another occasion the film selected had to do with personal hygiene she want wases her face at least every morning and evening she rubs gently all over her face and then there was the film on the teeth the rotary Strokes massage the gums and stimulate blood circulation was the film on caring for the hair 100 Strokes or more that sounds like a lot doesn't it but it's worth taking the time for with materials like these to work with Mrs southam's class was able to save costly hours of classroom time and their study of health problems these are not isolated examples similar cases of effective film use can be cited in all areas of the school program and at all age levels for instance to the art class of Mr Haren e Hofer of the Evanston Illinois schools comes the skilled artist the students have the experience of seeing a great artist at work the engineering class of Professor Richard H Cole of Northwestern University El lucid and straightforward demonstration of the meaning of vectors the teacher training group of Mr r p of the University of Chicago gets a new insight into Child Development the importance of the child's questions and how they are answered and for adult groups like this the films provide a common experience for a group discussion films are only part of a broad movement in the audiovisual field film strips records magnetic recordings models charts radio and television are also new tools for enlightenment to promote a wider and more effective use of these tools States counties and cities have appointed professional audiovisual directors to provide leadership in the field universities have established centers for teacher training and research in audiovisual education the US Office of Education and other civilian government agencies have training film programs industry and the Armed Forces continue to use the audiovisual tools that have been so effective in the Speedy training of large numbers of men and women Mr Clarence Randall president of a large Steel Corporation said I hold it deep conviction that training films are an important Aid to the development of education in Industry they are direct they are inexpensive and they teach people not only the how but the why of doing things the safe way and the Smart Way Admiral Hy of the Armed Forces said when time was precious the Navy turned to the medium of the motion pictures for technically accurate and educationally sound instruction research centers such as this one at Pennsylvania State College are constantly adding to our knowledge of films and their effective use a growing number of City school systems have Central points for the distribution of films and more than ever before individual schools are fighting to get the facility they need to make the use of films and other audiovisual materials a regular part part of classroom instruction yet even with all this most students in American classrooms do not have the opportunities offered by regular film use we must not assume that the New Media of communication will answer all our problems or that they will make the teacher less important on the contrary well-trained teachers will be needed more than ever before but the teachers Effectiveness will increase with the proper use of films just as the latest advances in medical equipment increase the effectiveness of the doctor just as the farmer's Effectiveness has increased through the power tools of modern agriculture just as our giant productive system is made more effective through the use of a modernized transportation system just as our industrial workers have been provided the tools an age of economic well-being requires the problem is to help the children learn to make the school years as profitable and productive as possible are we solving this vital problem with the best facilities and finest resources at our Command how do you measure the achievement of a Nation if you want to know how we're really doing take a look at our schools for on what we're doing here and in schools throughout the world rests not only our future fate but perhaps the very fate of civil ization [Music] [Applause] itself wow that was something else um and let me tell you why it's something else uh so University of Chicago the people who made this film uh acquired encyclopedia britanica in 1948 uh including their film uh Division and um so this was just a big ad for educational films and in particular encyclopedia branica uh films so uh it is a kind of a fascinating uh look at this is like raw raw film and oh my God some of the scenes in there were over the top wonderful I was so excited uh the uh but I was like this is just an ad an ad for encyclopedia branica um so that being said wow I still having sync problems man I'm concerned about uh using this software I'm so I'm basically using restream Studio software and I'm not sure what's going on uh why the sink is going off um yeah it's very frustrating but uh I don't think I can show anything any film today that's going to top what we just saw it was so good holy cow and it featured our friend narrator James Brill James Brill uh he narrated some of the encyclopedia branica films that we saw things of the that scene with the doctor who's kind of listening to the little boy's chest uh that that actor played uh the dad to Dick York and shy guy which was a cornet film but he plays a doctor in the EB film he also plays a judge in the EB film too so uh you know all these were actors in the Chicago area so cornet was probably a couple of townships over from where uh EB was filmed EB's
