Hello everybody. This is Skip Alzheimer. Welcome to the AV Geeks Lunchtime Streaming Show where we watch old 16 millimeter films. And I am trying to fix my iMac. So I'm back on my little laptop. Um which is why it's looking up at me as opposed to more direct. Um yeah. Anyways, uh here's a interesting silent film. It's some of it is time-lapsed, uh which is kind of cool. Um like they had the camera on a inter intervalometer, so it would take a frame every [snorts] so many intervals. Um enjoy So, uh, was that for a a time work study project where someone was, uh, hired, a consultant was hired to figure out how to make the process of loading and unloading wash um, at a laundromat, professional laundromat uh, to make it more efficient or was somebody showing off their camera with an intervelometer? I think that's right. So, it's interval. Um, I don't know. It's hard to say. Uh, I did find some notes that said it was shot around 1949, 1950, uh, which is later than what some folks thought. Um, anyhow, yeah, there you go. Uh, I haven't shown this in a long time, but I love it. This is uh from a fellow collector of mine uh who's uh was based in Houston but now is in Oregon and uh they found this film I think on eBay and uh it's about a North Carolina uh laundromat uh of which there was one in Raleigh. An excellent location and we're happy to have you meet Mr. Sam Ghoul who has only been here 3 weeks, but it is a beautiful establishment. And uh in talking to Sam, we believe he's going to have a very excellent future here. How are you today, Sam? >> Fine, thanks. And you? >> Very good, thank you. Sam, I couldn't help noticing as we go around talking to the Glamoround folks the wonderful automation that each and every one of the stores has. And I wonder if you would show us and me in particular because I'm fascinated by it just exactly and explain just exactly how this uh this serving apparatus works. Well, this this is a fairly simple operation. It's a tremendous timesaver. [clears throat] Uh when the customer comes in, we have a number that's assigned to the garment and uh we turn this dial to the garment number. >> Would you would you operate that for us? >> Yes, surely. >> In this case, uh 530. We set the dial to 530, push the button, and it automatically comes to us. In the meantime, we can go over to this other dial, which is for shirts, and set it. Uh I definitely do not intend to sit still with one store. >> Well, then you very definitely have high hopes for the future of your glamorama establishment as well as any other future plans you might have and other folks who would attempt to get into this. >> Well, I feel that this uh this store will probably gross somewhere approaching $3 million during the term of our lease. That's very good. We're now at the Glamarama franchise of Mr. David Parammore. And we have a couple of questions we'd like to ask you, Mr. Fmore. First of all, are you realizing the return from your investment that Banner Machinery Company evidenced that you would? >> Yes, I am. Well, thank you very much, sir. James, tell us something about your great establishment here in Dun, the Glamarama Cleaning Plant. >> Well, I'm mighty happy that we or I've decided about three years ago or 34 months ago to go into the dry cleaning business. I never had any experience before in this in field but now that I'm in it I just love every minute of it. >> Well, let me ask you this question first and foremost and this is very important. Are you realizing of course you say you've been here 3 years the answer seems to be pretty obvious to me but for everybody looking in. Are you realizing the profit that Banner evidenced that you would when you went into business? >> I definitely am Bob. Uh that is the part that I enjoy so much about it. So, that uh came from a film collector friend of mine who was based in Houston, but got this on eBay and then realized like, "Oh, wait a minute. This is uh based in North Carolina." And there was in one in Raleigh in uh on Hillsboro Street. No, I'm sorry, Western Boulevard. Um, I [clears throat] never went there. Across the street, there was like a fancy place called Suds that was made basically for college students where you could wash your clothes, wash watch uh TV, play video games, uh, get a beer and uh, you know, couple of some bar food and do your clothes. And I was like, "This place is brilliant. This is so good." And I went there a couple of times and realized like, "This place is expensive. this is really outrageous and like the food was gross and it was just the machines were weren't always working so I stopped going there. Um, in the dorms there was I was in Lee dorm at NC State and there we found in the basement there was that's where all the washers were, washers and dryers. But we found a dryer that you would put money in it would run. It would just keep running like it wouldn't time out and uh which was great and that was kind of the secret. Uh, unfortunately, some people would leave their clothes in too long and they would catch fire [laughter] and so we would have a a smoke alarm go off and we'd all have to evacuate the building. Um, but that glamorama on Western doesn't exist anymore, but there are still a couple in Raleigh. Um, [clears throat] similar, I guess. I don't know. I think there's 10 kind of in in the region in uh the triangle. Um, but none of the locations that are listed in this film. So yes, somebody guessed this is all about laundry. Or is it Seeing, hearing, thinking about, and feeling a ball going through directional movements around the [music] body can help us learn many things. We can learn game skills, directions used in forming numbers and letters, and activities for [music] demonstrations. Let's begin by sitting on the floor with our legs spread. Try dropping and catching your ball from a kneeling position with your body straight. Drop catch. Drop. Catch. Toss the ball to a height where you can catch it easily. Toss. Catch. Toss. Catch. The skills we have been practicing have exercised our total communicative system through seeing, hearing, thinking, doing, and feeling movements involving many learning activities. Uh I hope to find a copy that is not water damaged like it was at the beginning. Um because it's so good and I hope to find others in that series because there is just something it's I don't know if it's the music. I I you know it's like this choreography like I don't know it's it's so good and I have quite a few films that have uh what what's called motion exploration or motor skill uh and this is all about getting kids to you know learn the hand eye coordination and body you know leg coordination and all that being aware of their body spatial awareness stuff and this is after years. This explains the parachute like why you know the PE teacher would bring the parachute out. We'd be all super excited and we all be would like be like bouncing balls on the parachute and then we'd go under the parachute and so much fun and it's because of that it's this this spatial awareness stuff. Okay, so somebody guessed that today's uh show was themed about laundry kind of. Uh this is way too many commercials advertising the fabric softener bounce. And so this happened uh a friend of mine had a sweater she was wearing and she used a fabric softener because I could smell it. And what it had done is it had made everything kind of fluffy and fuzzy. And somehow, I don't think she was smoking, but something happened where there was a match close to her uh sweater and it went like there's this blue flame that shot across her uh the right side of her body and it was like [laughter] it was because those fibers got to where they were uh elevated [clears throat] and connected and super flammable. So, cautionary tale. I don't know if she used bounce. I don't know which product she used, but it was definitely she said that she used dryer sheets and we figured that out. All right.
