streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and uh that normally it's going against our normal protocol where we end a show maybe with uh books are for burning or the um re-envisioning of shake hands with danger but come on I haven't shown this in such a while it's it's so great um and I just showed a film on Elementary Book binding so it just seemed appropriate so uh anyways Elementary Book binding it was a silent film came from the uh Mogul Library um but I couldn't find an entry for it in the catalog so um I don't know what to tell you um anywho uh we got some films set up for you uh and we've got one on the scanner here um uh this is did I actually change the name of it no I didn't this is uh rules are good directions enjoy correctly at one second please foreign take it easy no pushing foreign rules are really for our benefit even rules for the bus do you know some of the rules and why we have them stay in your seat while the bus is moving that's because you can fall and hurt yourself by suddenly turned or stopped don't stick your head out the window and keep your hands and arms inside because if you stick your head out the window another bus or something is coming the other way gush and don't bother the driver it's not that I don't like you kids but I've got to keep my mind on driving keep us all safe [Music] [Applause] [Music] someone didn't obey the traffic rule it's a law that cars must stop while a school bus is loading or unloading but sometimes people break the law by not stopping for a school bus that's why it's important to be careful and to look both ways even if you're following the rules [Music] hey Jeff what's going on what are you doing in my desk looking for something I need a pencil you could ask for if that's my desk you know well I needed one so what's going on here Rob Jeff nothing Rob Jeff was looking for a pencil through my desk Jeff did you ask for Rob's permission no what is the rule about respecting others property not to take things without asking first how would you like it if Rob went to your house and went through your things without asking permission I guess I wouldn't like it that's a point rules are made for everyone not just one person okay Jeff okay rules are made for everyone they're meant to be fair to all and really help us get along better with each other we've been studying about Magellan all your turn you'll get your chance Mary that's what I was gonna say every class has rules like the rule of raising your hand if you want to speak and then waiting your turn [Music] the rules we learn in school are just good habits that will use all the rest of our lives oh I'm really sorry I didn't mean to next time watch what you're doing oh no you broke this accident wouldn't have happened if you had just followed the rules about running in the hall foreign follow the rules for standing in line there'd be chaos at the drinking fountain and someone wouldn't get a turn and can you imagine what would happen if we did whatever we wanted to when we were playing games everything would be crazy [Music] sometimes rules can be fun because without them we wouldn't have games if you think about it rules are what make games fun to play [Music] [Music] three strikes you're out when everyone follows the rules and cooperates everything's a lot more fun for everybody [Music] if you're walking home and a stranger offers you a ride don't accept it it could be dangerous that man wants to give us a ride do you know him come on no but it doesn't matter come on come on Rachel you know the rule about writing strangers ah she's right some rules are meant to keep us from harm [Music] foreign a lot of people like to go to the park to have a good time to enjoy a swim to play games or have an outdoor barbecue even here there are rules for everyone rules that really help us enjoy our day at the park [Music] we learn her for our safety other rules are just to keep everything beautiful for us and others always close the match flap so the matches won't catch on fire and strike the match away from you like this why away from yourself in case little pieces of the burning match fly off they won't land on you and you won't get burned that seems like a pretty good rule matches can be dangerous you've got to be careful with them when you ask about a rule you'll find there's usually a good reason behind it swimming is a lot of fun when we follow a few Simple Rules don't swim when a lifeguard isn't on duty don't run because it's slippery and you could fall and get hurt and if you can't swim remember stay in the area for non-swimmers [Applause] can you imagine what things would look like if people didn't follow the simple rule of don't litter why would anyone not obey that rule or any rule [Music] foreign people have always lived by rules most people try to follow them and if you look around you'll see other kinds of rules on signs [Music] some signs warn us of danger [Music] others tell us which direction to go signs are a kind of rule when we break the rules we can hurt someone else sometimes we can hurt ourselves [Music] there's a rule about getting along with others it's a simple rule that's been around for a long time class quite down now do unto others as you'd want them to do unto you do you know what that means I feel it means to be nice and try not to lose your temper it also means not to fight with other people if you dish it out expect it to be thrown in your face if you plant someone in the nose expect to get it back if you treat people good good things will happen to you I also think if this rule was Fallen more often there wouldn't be so much fighting and hurting I think it means if you help someone they will help you back or if you do a good deed to them they just might do a good deed back if you're nice to people people will be nice to you everywhere you go in life or whatever you do you'll find rules just like rules for math spelling good health safety rules and and rules for games we also have rules to help us get along rules for our government police students and even rules at home rules were created by people and meant get punched back it's kind of the way it goes um Let's uh let's watch some films about the dinosaur age or watch a film about the dinosaur age um Circa maybe 50s 60s we'll see what um has changed as far as information about dinosaurs enjoy [Music] foreign this is a model of a dinosaur the dinosaurs were a group of reptiles that disappeared from Earth at least 75 million years ago long before the first man appeared the word dinosaur means terrible lizard how do we know there were dinosaurs and how can we guess what they may have looked like let's see these paleontologists have come from a museum to look for the fossil bones of ancient reptos a paleontologist is a scientist who studies fossils fossils are the remains of plants and animals of past ages from previous fossil fines in this area they know that their chances of finding fossils are fairly good they've found something some fossil bones embedded in Rock they remove some of the overlying Rock and dirt so they can examine what they found decide that their find is important enough to take back to the museum Laboratory first they clear the area being careful not to disturb the fossil remain now they begin the job of covering the fossil bones they must work very carefully the dirt is removed a little at a time to reduce the danger of damaging the fine soon they are able to identify Their fines the paddle or flipper of a plesiosaur aplesiosaur was a large water living reptile or sea serpent closely related to the dinosaurs from the age of the Rock in which it was found they know that this plesiosaur lived perhaps a hundred million years ago when one side of the paddle has been cleared of dirt and rock the other side must be cut away so that the entire Rock slab with the bones in place can be lifted out slab will be covered with a plaster cast so the bones can be moved without crumbling or breaking them first pieces of wet newspaper are used to cover the bone in order to protect them from the plaster then plaster of Paris is added to the water pieces of burlap are soaked in the plaster of Paris and carefully laid over the paper-covered bones the plaster soaked burlap will harden to make a strong cast when both sides have been covered with plaster the stick is placed along the length of the cast to prevent its braking after the plaster hardens the plesiosaur paddle with every bone in place is carried back to the museum at the Museum the paleontologists work in their laboratory on the job of preparing the fossil materials for study or exhibition carefully the cast is cut away great skill and Patience are needed the paper is lifted off the bones must be freed from the dirt and rock that still remain when the bones are clean enough a dab of paint is placed on each one then they are numbered the paint on the numbers will make it easier for the paleontologists to put the bones together in their proper order after they are lifted from the plaster cap finally when enough fossil bones of aplesiosaur have been gathered together an entire skeleton is assembled the new paddle is put in its proper place the skeleton is mounted on iron supports to hold it in a natural position the bones of many animals collected over many years have been used to make this skeleton the shape of the bones and the position in which they may have been found helped the paleontologist in his job the Plesiosaurus skeleton has been put together as it must have been when the animal was alive sometimes the museum may decide that a model of the animal is needed a specially trained artist is called in the artist works with the paleontologist to make a sketch of the Plesiosaurus skeleton from his sketch he makes a detailed and accurate drawing of the animal as it may have looked and from the artist's drawing a model is finally completed in the same way models of other long dead animals like this brontosaurus are made finally visitors to a museum may look at an exhibit like this one this brontosaurus was a dinosaur probably the largest of all dinosaurs a model of a man built the scale will give you some idea of its size no man of course lived when the dinosaurs were alive brontosaurus was a plant eater some brontosaurs weighed as much as 50 tons perhaps 10 times as much as a modern elephant and may have been 60 to 70 feet long the name brontosaurus means Thunder lizard it gets its name from the fact that when it walked it probably shook the Earth making a noise like thunder this is stegosaurus one of the smaller dinosaurs only eight feet high and 15 feet long again the model man will give you an idea of its size stegosaurus too was a plant eater and the strange armor along its back was probably part of its defense against attack by the larger more powerful flesh-eating dinosaurs it spiked tail a handy weapon too trachodon is called the duckbill dinosaur it measured almost 30 feet from its head to its tail notice the scale model man again krakadon walked upright it lived in the rivers and swamps of North America beating upon water plants The Peculiar shape of its mouth gives it the name duckbill paleontologists believe it may have strained its food from the mud much as a modern duck does This Is tyrannosaurus the scale model Man shows you its great size fortunately perhaps the last Tyrannosaurus died about a hundred million years before the first man appeared or Tyrannosaurus was the Tyrant lizard the most terrible of all the dinosaurs its skull measured more than four feet in length its sharp pointed six-inch teeth prove it was a meat eater few animals probably could defend themselves against its attack the fossil bones of dinosaurs and other giant reptos have been found on every continent from fossils like these we know that dinosaurs ruled the Earth for over 100 million years only to Disappear Completely no one really knows why the dinosaurs and the other giant reptiles are gone but today paleontologists and other scientists are continually searching for fossils in order to better understand the record of life on Earth foreign [Music] a lot of stuff smeared together um when I do a show at the uh North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences we talk about dinosaurs a lot and we talk about um all of the misinformation and how thing how it all all those different eras got compressed and the assumption is that all the dinosaurs live together and that it's not true but anyways um still a lot of really interesting stuff to learn uh regarding paleontology and uh let's see so I got another film set up here on the hungry but you're hungry I know okay the important thing is the reaction there's a horrible horrible disaster and somehow Or Another We're going to have to portray it in your faces folks the first day on the set the moment of truth so to speak when the director and writer and producer finally gets a chance to see their ideas translated into the film medium okay okay very good okay most often however the start of a new production provides these unexpected moments of sheer frustration God try it again and change your aim congratulations you finally made it okay okay very good now Allison not too soon okay now grab it for us the challenge to create a film about nuclear disaster is probably the most difficult in the your chance to live series we feel as if the audience is quite first we ought to talk about radiation and then Fallout shelters yeah good that should fall about here and he will talk about um how to stock a uh a fallout shelter I assume yeah we'll pick that point up right about here yeah I think we should pick it up right about here be much better looks nice what follows will be the sequence dealing with supplying the the shelter with basic necessities I Peter Thomas gets his hands on the narration he'll make it sing okay Peter let's let's take that section again let's take it from the top same mode same emotion it's pretty good you want to put the change in this time away for the next take uh let's do it this time uh I'd like to ask you about the interpretation there are two or three ways we could do this like a prophet of Doom we could do it like a reporter and sort of factual or maybe underplay it very casual but the words are so frightening I'm not sure which way to go on this what do you think I think we better do it softly I'm afraid I don't want to scare them in the beginning this this narrations over the beginning of the film yeah and later on we'll scare the hell out of them but let's let's do it low-keyed now underplay I got you okay no time problem no a warning that hopefully will never be heard but one which should be familiar is a series of three to five minute wavering sounds on the sirens or a series of short blasts on whistles horns or other devices this means that an actual enemy attack against the United States has been detected and that protective action should be initiated immediately the amount of time you and your family will have to prepare yourselves could be as little as five minutes in some locations or as long as an hour in others regardless of the amount of time you had use it wisely and Peter on use it wisely can you give us a um a change of emphasis yeah you're right why try it again do you want it from the top or in the middle okay uh roll into it okay right the amount of time you and your with all the horrible details what do you think we do still underplay it yeah I think so yeah yeah it's hard to really underplay because the words are so strong you know and uh well let's give it a whirl and see what we can come up with yeah the picture here I know you haven't seen it you're doing it wild the picture will show mushrooms and we'll show uh Devastation and uh as opposed to all of the other films we've been doing a Devastation here is quite frightening so sort of CounterPoint it by yeah if we are heavy on the picture is heavy then it'll be just doomsday right it's a coin a phrase yeah I think the the signifi the significance here is that I think we want the audience to recognize that they have a personal responsibility to themselves and to their community and it's really it's right near the end of the film and it's really a wind-up leading towards the the very emotional end of the film okay now let's try it again please right it is obvious that the aftermath of a nuclear attack will not be a pretty sight but survival of the blast requires each citizen to act with common sense and responsibility for each individual must become part of an effort to get the community and the nation back to normal as quickly as possible it's pretty frightening what do you think Al you in there yeah hold it um I have a funny feeling that the rest of the narration should be out on location I don't think we should do it as voice over I think that we have to go back to a location go back to something that um becomes significant what do you think what do you suggest um well we we shot before in front of Lincoln and then we had Washington Memorial and all I was thinking of something like either the capitol or White House something like that well as long as we're doing it why don't we try for the White House yeah the White House yeah I like it okay can we get the White House sure let me call up in Peter got some changes uh Peter okay you're not gonna believe it but uh we're moving location you what a moving location moving location where to have you been to the White House I've passed it I've never been there we've written so we're going we may here we are in is so terrible that most people have put it out of their minds but not thinking about it and not really thinking seriously about it will not make a danger disappear it only makes well preparation impossible and this can be fatal for preparation which of course can save your life can only be done in advance of an emergency situation hoping to really prepare when something unexpected occurs is the description of this film it wouldn't say features Peter Thomas live um which has interest and significance nowadays given his um all the voiceover work that he did and um the fact that he did that show forensic show was it forensic something anyways my sister watches that show to fall asleep because Peter Thomas so I'm excited to show it to her and say like hey look this is what Peter Thomas looks like um anyhow thanks for joining us today I had lots of interesting things that we watched uh thank you Jeremy for the coffee that's a great way to support us uh when it's cold and gray um know we watch the thing about a paleontologists an archaeologist kind of digging up stuff well I mean this is what we're doing is we're doing film archeology we're pulling stuff off the shelves trying
