foreign oh my God what a wonderful shot to and that on um I didn't know that was in there I mean it kind of makes sense but uh so that came from uh the Virginia Department of Education they got rid of a bunch of stuff and there was somebody in uh the kind of near Alexandria who went to an auction and got a bunch of it and then he got tired of it and basically donated it to us uh and so it's uh a b role so what that means is that um you you have segments of film then you have what we call slug which is usually just opaque film it could be um mag full coat mag or it could be leader it could be something else and then so what you do is you have two reels usually a b sometimes c d e uh and what happens is you edit specific um scenes and then it gets composited when it gets printed um to a negative uh and sometimes special effects are used like a fade or a trans some sort of transition um and that's so you mark them up and you send them to a lab and what happens is you have a sync Point usually a punched out hole and um yeah so it all Lays out so we got to see the first uh the a roll then when you saw the the leader then that was starting the b-roll and so if you have a photographic memory you can composite it in your head towards the end I just started skipping around because I was like oh well there's a lot of slug here but uh yeah so that's why sometimes we show stuff and there's um kind of black slug in between uh I'm back I'm happy to be back I had a wonderful time in Pittsburgh uh seeing friends uh we will see if I got covered because the emails are flying around saying that oh no I have covid um I didn't always wear my mask but I mostly did so uh and I got all the boosters so we'll see we'll see what happens um not looking forward to getting it but if if I'm gonna get it Now's the Time uh so I get over it before the holidays um uh let's see guys so many films to watch um let's go ahead and start off with a film or good friends at Encyclopedia Britannica and are very good friend um I don't have his name handy I wrote it down somewhere James where is it our narrator friend you guys know it I had it on a piece of paper I think I threw the piece of paper away oh hello whoops yeah I wrote it down James Brill our good friend James Brill talking about electrons enjoy actually consists of Youth Elementary is a phenomena the conduction of electricity through Solutions through gases and through vacuum in passing a current through a solution of silver nitrate we find that metallic silver is deposited out exact relationship exists between the weight of this silver and the amount of electricity used we shall now deposit silver on a spoon which first we have carefully weighed then we make the spoon the negative electrode in this solution of silver nitrate through which an electric current is passing we measure the current with an ammeter and the time with a clock the amount of silver deposited during this time represented by this additional counterweight depends on the product of the current by the time just as in flowing water the total quantity of water is the product of the rate of Flow by the time of flow so in the case of electricity the product of current by time measures the total quantity of electricity next we use acidified water the electric current here releases oxygen and hydrogen accumulating in the vials at the top using the same current as before with silver and for the same length of time we discovered that only 1 108th as much hydrogen by weight is released as was silver now an atom of hydrogen weighs about 1 108th as much as a silver atom therefore the same total charge which passed through the two solutions must have released the same number of atoms of hydrogen as of silver and we conclude that atoms of hydrogen and silver carry the same charge if we use molten zinc chloride however we find that only half as many atoms are removed from the solution by the same quantity of electricity and Adam of zinc must therefore carry twice the charge of a hydrogen atom similarly it has been found that atoms of all elements carry simple whole number multiples of the charge carried by hydrogen these among others one unit charge these two unit charges and of the common elements only aluminum three thus we see that electricity comes in very small packages or units which are never subdivided to this astonishing conclusion we are LED also by experiments on the conduction of electricity through gases ordinarily gases are non-conducting electricity normally does not leak off charged wires in direct contact with the air likewise an electroscope will hold its charge almost indefinitely if however a flame is held near a wire attached to the electroscope the leaves collapse at once similarly x-rays produced even at some distance caused the charged leaves to collapse we can explain these phenomena if we assume that the flame and the x-rays caused air molecules to become charged some positively and some negatively for the positively charged electroscope negatively charged molecules are attracted to the knob and cause some of its charge to be neutralized furthermore when the electroscope is negatively charged positively charged molecules present cause the leaves to collapse when the X-ray tube is turned off these charged molecules called ions are no longer formed those remaining neutralize each other and thus the air again becomes a non-conductor to measure the charge of such ionized particles oil is atomized and the drops become charged in the process a drop is allowed to settle between two charged plates when the drop and upper plate are negative and the lower plate is positive the drop is pulled down by both the electric field and gravity if the field is reversed the drop will be forced upward by the electric field against the pull of gravity therefore the difference between downward and upward speeds from its accurate measurement of the charge on the oil drop the charge on the drop may be changed by ionizing the air with x-rays if a positive ion collides with a negative drop the charge on the drop is reduced the change in charge can be measured by the change in speed never during thousands of observations has a charge been discovered Which is less than the unit charge on a hydrogen atom found by electrolysis oil drops always have exactly this amount of charge or a whole number of such charges as to the charges themselves it is only in vacuum that we can detach them from matter and observe effects due to them alone this evacuated bulb contains a glowing filament and also an additional electrode when this electrode is kept positive a current is registered by the ammeter no charges flow if it is negative the evacuation of the tube has largely eliminated any gaseous ions which if positive could move from the electrode to the filament therefore we must assume that negative charges from the hot filament have traveled to the positive electrode plate this current can be carried for a considerable distance through vacuum as we cease heating the filament the flow of charges stops this is the principle of vacuum tubes used in radios phonographs public address systems and talking pictures to render the path of these charges visible we have placed a screen of zinc sulfide inside the tube eliminating all but a narrow beam of charges by means of a slit when the charges strike the screen their path is rendered luminous if a magnet is brought near the path of the charges is deflected just as a current in a wire would be here we have the current but no wire and since the tube is highly evacuated there are no ion carriers either let us assume that each individual charge in this moving stream is the elementary unit charge of electricity determined in the oil drop experiment these unit charges which we call electrons can even be swung Around in Circles by a suitable magnetic field this offers a method of determining their Mass just as it is possible to determine the mass of a stone at the end of a swinging rope if we know the length of the Rope the speed of the Stone and the force the stone exerts upon the Rope so is it possible to determine the mass of these electrons this Mass has found to be 1 1845th of the mass of a hydrogen atom a very convenient method of obtaining electron streams is to place a metal within an evacuated tube and then permit x-rays to shine upon it this radiation releases electrons from the metal the remaining positive charge soon prevents any more electrons from escaping if however we insert another electrode kept positive with respect to this piece of metal a continuous flow of charges is produced which may be registered as current by a galvanometer this electron stream has the same properties as that obtained from hot filaments this phenomenon is used in the photoelectric cell such cells are adapted for soundtrack on film by using ordinary light with the more active metals like potassium or cesium the varying opaqueness of the soundtrack changes the amount of light reaching the photoelectric cell in the projector [Music] the cell therefore delivers a varying current which is Amplified by vacuum tubes and then translated into sound [Music] of the utmost importance to modern science was the astonishing discovery that whatever the origin of the electrons hot filaments of tungsten or x-rays on zinc or led to the discovery of the electrons Elementary units of electric charge these electrons constitute the fundamental building blocks of the atoms and molecules of matter in its infinite variety of forms [Music] foreign I don't know if there's still a hum yeah there was sorry I'm trying to figure out so I'm using this uh microphone and some people said that I had a like a hum like a 60 second cycle hum which is usually caused by a ground lift when you have a differential between grounds of two different power sources but this is all being coming from a USB so I don't know ceremony would or the service would understand what's going on um so I'm a little bit filled with beans today because I had I spilled some coffee then I made some more coffee uh that was provided by a fan who works at a coffee shop and shows the show uh they're based in Eugene Oregon let me get the bag real quick it's uh wondering goat coffee um and uh it's got a little bit of a caffeine kick to it so I might be a little uh bouncy uh in the meantime I got this letter um go ahead and open it and it says wow uh dear AV Geeks more 16 millimeter films about Wankel engines please a fan and then they included included 200 so um I think I'm gonna watch a film about Wankel engines I mean not that I use uh being bribed to um pick what I'm gonna show but it just seems like it all works out so here it is uh I'm not sure the title of it actually but uh it's the Wankel engine I believe I'll get the title when we watch it twinkle engine you could tell I'm all discombobulated I'm like answering a bunch of emails and doing all sorts of things so here it is the Wankel engine enjoy in the early 20s when the Model T was popular a new engine was developed by Felix wonkel he introduced the rotary internal combustion engine known as the wonkel engine like many scientists of those days Felix Wankel was dissatisfied with the efficiency output of the piston engine besides being inefficient the piston engine was more complicated than the rotary engine the rotary engine which was considered to be a dream engine became a reality in the 60s after a study by toyo kogio the advantages of the rotary engine are it is a simpler structure with smaller number of moving parts there is less vibration with three power strokes per Revolution there is less power loss because there is no back and forth motion as found in the reciprocating engine being simpler smaller and more powerful are three characteristics that make the rotary engine a more attractive source of power there is no up and down movement like that in the conventional reciprocating engine The Eccentric movement of the rotor is transferred by an internal gear to a rotating power shaft a cutaway rotary engine in the intake position compression ignition and exhaust stroke the trocoin chamber in the area in which the rotor revolves a rotor is the triangular shaped piston which rotates in the trocoid chamber the ignition system in the rotary engine is different from the conventional reciprocating engine a cutaway of the reciprocating engine on the intake stroke the intake valve opens to let the fuel air mixture enter the combustion chamber during the compression stroke both valves are closed the compressed fuel air mixture is ready for ignition from the plug the spark plug fires when the Piston reaches the top part of the cylinder creating a power stroke which pushes the Piston downward during the exhaust stroke the exhaust valve is opened allowing the consumed fuel air mixture to leave the combustion chamber a major difference between the piston and the rotary engine is the ignition system in the piston engine the spark plug is in the same enclosed area as the fuel air mixture at the time of ignition but in the rotary engine the spark plug might be ignited in this early position in idling speed or in this late ignition position during high speed rotation there is a possibility of misfiring due to the very low rotation of the rotor in idling or to the super high speed rotation this could happen because the spark plug is not in the same enclosed area as the fuel air mixture at the time of ignition the spark plug must ignite the fuel air mixed here in the indicated position for proper firing it is limited to one-half rotation on the rotor in the Wankel engine there are three power strokes in one revolution this characteristic makes the Wankel engine more powerful than the reciprocating engine if we designate the rotor as a triangle e B see with the three sides as x y and z when lobe a is just leaving nine o'clock side x is fired when lobe a is almost reaching 12 o'clock side Z is entering the compression stroke at the same time Side Y is in the intake position when lobe a is almost reaching three o'clock side Z is fired at the same time Side Y is in the compression stroke following side x in the exhaust position when lobe a is reaching seven o'clock Side Y is fired by the time lobe a reaches back at nine o'clock the rotor has completed three firings in one revolution to review the combustion characteristics of the Wonka engine this is how the three firings occur in succession one two three one two three one two three [Music] one of the problems associated with the Wonka engine is excessive vibration at idling speed assume that this rotor is rotating at 6000 RPM in slow motion the ignition can be seen the firing occurs while the rotor is in the late position due to the speed of the rotation of the rotor assume this rotor is rotating at medium speed here shown in slow motion the firing occurs while the rotor is in the earlier position but during high speed the ignition takes place in this position assume the rotor is now rotating at idling speed below 700R in slow motion the firing occurs almost too soon to operate the engine the ignition sometimes occurs before the compression chamber enters the spark plug area this results in incomplete ignition causing the unburned fuel air mixture to be exhausted as white smoke this defect causes the engine to jump choke and puff thereby decreasing the power output on the other hand if the spark plug is positioned to fire correctly at idling speed it will operate efficiently both at idling speed and medium speed notice the difference this is the ignition when the engine is at idling speed and this is the firing at medium speed both firings occur in the area where the spark plug is positioned but at high speed due to the rotational speed of the rotor the ignition will fire too late causing an unburned air fuel mixture to be exhausted as white smoke as a result of their efforts to make the rotary engine more practical toyokogyo the Mazda automobile Factory has contributed substantially to the development of the engine they solved one obstacle simply by adding a second spark plug which is exposed sooner in the cycle than the plug used for high speed rotation now both spark plugs allow the engine to operate smoothly at high and idling speed a slow motion picture of a rotor at medium speed although the spark plug is positioned to operate best at high rotor speed it still operates satisfactorily at medium speed as the RPM of the rotor decreases to idling speed the firing occurs too early to ignite the fuel air mixture in the combustion chamber to solve this problem a second spark plug is needed to ignite the combustion chamber to get a complete ignition the original plug is called the leading plug this leading plug ignites first then the newly installed plug which is called the trailing plug ignites when idling the trailing plug does the job adequately but at high speed the leading as well as the trailing plugs work together to ignite the fuel air mixture very efficiently a review in slow motion at idling speed we notice that the leading plug ignites first after a time lag of a few micro seconds the trailing plug ignites this situation does not have the undesirable characteristics of the Wonka engine because the leading plug only fires the burned exhaust gas that would not create any explosion in the Mazda rotary engine the trailing plug ignites 10 degrees after the leading plug the trailing plug is installed to operate best at idling speed due to the three power strokes per Revolution the rotary engine can accelerate easily to over 7000 RPM and an undesired combustion process will occur if the RPM exceeds that speed assuming this is the rotation of the Rotor at 7000 RPM in slow motion the two spark plugs ignite while the rotor is in this position an ideal combustion process occurs causing the engine to rotate in its Direction with maximum torque nevertheless if acceleration is still taking place and the rotor speed reaches about 9000 RPM the rotor will move to this position while it is ignited in this case an undesired double ignition process occurs in the two different combustion Chambers this situation creates severe damage to the engine because of the knock that occurs in the combustion chamber ignited by the trailing plug aerob has more power because there is an inertia force due to its direction of rotation however both forces are acting one against the other causing the engine to lose power and drop its output the Mazda rotary engine because of its dual spark plug system and quiet performance is an ideal engine for automobiles the leading and trailing ignition system have their own characteristics to make the engine run smoother at both high and idling speeds the leading plug that ignites first is exposed to the combustion chamber later than the trailing plug on the other hand the trailing plug which is exposed earlier to the combustion ignites after the leading plug the two ignition systems are not interchangeable reversing the spark plug cables between plugs will cause engine failure after a period of time a review of the Dual ignition system shows the rotor is rotating at idling speeds the combustion chamber enters the trailing plug first and the leading plug later but the leading plug ignites first then the trailing plug [Music] the weakness of a wonkle engine is in its idling most wonkle engines that employ a single spark plug idle at not less than 800 RPM occasionally if the engine happens to idle slower than 700 RPM it will run rough and hunt a dual plug wonkle engine will run smoother since the fuel air mixture will burn more efficiently at high and idling speeds as mentioned before a spark plug ignites a mixture of fuel and air which burns progressively and evenly in all directions in slow motion at idling speed the force of the compression after the ignition is forcing against the rotation of the rotor by employing two rotors each with two spark plugs the idling power loss is greatly reduced in high speed rotation there is no match for a rotary engine the free power strokes per Revolution make it an ideal engine a comparison of the two rotor Curtis right wonkle engine and the V8 reciprocating engine shows that one third of the wonkle produces twice the horsepower the V8 is 23 cubic inches larger in displacement and occupies three times as much space as the wonko a number of components and moving parts are also more in the V8 reciprocating engine wonkle engine being simpler smaller and more powerful make it more attractive as a source of power there will be more practical uses of wonko 5 engines in the future will be utilized in chainsaws lawn mowers motorcycles outboard motors truck Refrigeration units even airplane engines anywhere lightness and high power to weight ratio are necessities Wankel engine is truly the engine of the future and it is here today [Music] thank you I fid um there was no letter there's no address on it dear than I with power and Judgment of the Lord John claimed he was sent by God his God could not save him from the Executioner sword purely that proves he was no holy messenger and that the god whom he called Almighty had no power to enough enough it may have been God's will that John should die why must you interpret everything as the will of John's God the god of a conquered people a god whom Judas the master is no threat to Herod any leader on the side of Truth is a threat to tyranny a danger to Tiberius the puppets of Rome Herod his brothers to care of us the master doesn't treat revolt he talks of love and forgiveness yes I know but Israel will never be free to love and forgive until her People Unite against Rome rise to a leader who will guide them order them command them to obey another Tyrant no a king their own king a king of Israel one they will accept as a David a Moses a Hezekiah this is an old old dream with three centuries people have talked of it but accomplished nothing but it will come not in a year or two or three perhaps but when enough men are willing to die for a kingdom of Their Own I was a zealot pledge to restore Israel to its place among the nations where am I um yeah so Cathedral films I had guessed either family films because there are a series of gospel Jesus films with reenactments that were distributed by Family films uh and then I guessed Concordia which is another uh religious educational film company and then I forgot about Cathedral Cathedral is another uh religious educational film company and there were quite a few so much so that um uh in the educational screen uh Journal that there was a whole section dedicated to um religious educational films um and there were companies that made them so look oh Cathedral films this is a new film um what is it fella this was that doesn't say the title it's Bible stories uh are always new so the deal is that um these companies just like the educational film companies of Coronet and Encyclopedia Britannica um in Centron they did this to make money so they were making or licensing uh films that showed reenactments of the Bible uh from the gospel Etc Old Testament and I guess one of the what that ad is telling me for Concord for uh uh Cathedral films is that uh some of these companies were just licensing old footage so you know you'd watch this this thing and it was in black and white it was silent and with inner titles and it just didn't resonate with the Contemporary audiences and they wanted something in color with Sound and Music and drama and that so I gotta say that
