that is for that hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mimer films and that was a film that we scanned that didn't have a soundtrack it um was it was double perfed and so the idea is that uh cornette would add uh soundtrack in another thing and merry it together an optical soundtrack um so that's why that is and I would love to find the soundtrack for it and maybe we will run across it at some point um anyo uh this one is from wow the spelling on this is probably not I don't know if that's right um too many double consonant in there uh I wish I had a dictionary to find out this next film uh is something that we digitize for the prelinger archive we've been uh working with them to put stuff more of their stuff online uh and they've uh yes uh so here's some telephone etiquette in case you were wondering enjoy did you ever notice how some people treat others we like people who are polite we should always try to be thoughtful when we talk on the telephone we should be kind and considerate let's learn some ways to be kind and considerate on the telephone it's really very simple if you know three words please thank you and I'm sorry let's take the word please first you always say please when you ask for someone like this may I speak to Mrs Jones please if you ask someone to wait you would say please like this wait just a moment please that is how you would use the word please another word is thank you you always say thank you when someone does something for you Billy this is Mr Harris Mr Jones wants a boy to work at 9:00 a.m. Saturday uh he lives at 18 South Second Street will you be sure to tell him all of that for me I'll deliver the message Mr H thank you very much the person who says thank you is kind and considerate you also say thank you if you ask someone to repeat a message so you can write it down then your name is Mrs Jones and you wanted her to call you at 1726 thank you Mrs Jones the last word is I'm sorry you say I'm sorry when you get the wrong number like this Jones resident Ralph Jones speaking may I speak to Mr B please no Mr boy doesn't live here he's just one of 3 4 no this is 1036 I'm sorry I must have the wrong number sometimes when you answer the phone you get a hard one listen please tell Mrs J that the bridge club won't meet at Mrs Jon's tonight but rather at Mrs christopherson's and to bring the minutes of the last meeting in this case you'll need all three magic words I am sorry but I did not understand you would you please say it again I will write it down when people know that you are writing they will talk more slowly I will see that she gets your message Miss Johnson thank you here is another thing never yell into a phone boys dor Building 21 second Flor Jimmy you already speaking this is Mr Brewster is Joe yai there I have a job for him I don't know Hey Jo here is a better way to handle that call is Jo y you there I have a job for him I'll see wait just a moment please pleas put the phone down carefully then look for the person being called this is the right way if you were working in someone's home you would handle the call in the same way may I speak to Mrs youngquist please wait just a moment please put the phone down carefully then go tell the person you wanted on the telephone Mrs youngquist all right thank you remember the three magic words may I speak to Mrs Jones please wait just a moment please I'll tell Mr H right away thank you is Mr Smith there no he doesn't live here I'm sorry I must have the wrong number these words are important when you are using the telephone they will help you to be kind and considerate of other [Music] people wow that's fascinating the Bureau of Indian Affairs um um yeah trying to I guess to um help uh Native Americans to introduce them to this new telephone technology I you know to help them bridge the gap of like getting jobs uh interacting with people yeah fascinating absolutely fasc fasinating all right so behind me I have a film on the scanner and we love watching films on the scanner um which means we've not seen this before I don't think uh this is called yes I can and the title's clipped so I don't know what year is From enjoy beams together then once you get these things lashed up you want to find some Pine boughs or grass or bu D you just can't why not I've been on thousands and thousands of camping troops with my mom and dad listen David next week the cabin can go on a camping trip and I like you take your stuff off to the side away from everybody else and so you can set up your own campsite how will that be no that's not good enough David you're too stubborn about this you should just forget about it I want to go out like the big kid David you don't understand even if I let you go right the camp director would never agree to this and if your parents found out we let you go out by yourself they just have a fit I'm going to write my parents and ask them for permission I think you should just forget about it listen I'm going to see you guys later okay I'm not too young I've been on millions of campings with my mom and dad but any thinks you're too young to go camping I'm not too young you can get lost you're starve I'll bring food along you could be chased by a bear you could be bitten by a snake a million things could happen a beehive could fall on your shoulder and sting your head you can fall in a hole and break your leg then what would you do you guys are just like Eddie you're afraid to go out camping so you give me this big lecture I'm going to go over and watch Al on the solo campers remember yesterday we did four today you're going to try to do one more cuz every day you're setting a new personal goal for yourself right that's good up again that's okay what's this got to do with Sola camping well what do you think well I guess uh if something's running after you that wants to kill you um I guess you can climb up a tree and um and get away this helps you how about just the idea that uh you know what your own abilities are and so you have confidence in what you can do okay people that's enough of this let's do our jogs around the lake and go for a swim Al can I go too sure if you can keep up I can keep up go ahead oh thanks hi el hi Ken how's David well I don't know he just went off with the solo campers for three laps around the lake in a swim three laps can you do that well I don't know I really admire the kid he's persistent as anything has he been talking to you about this solo camping SHP yeah he's he's mentioned it he keeps bugging me all day long about it I don't [Music] know [Music] got to make [Music] it don't give up don't give up don't give up got to make it [Music] have I made [Music] it but what would you do out in the woods all that time by yourself David wouldn't you rather be with your friends well it's I like being alone it's different than being with other people would you get bored all day by yourself well I might get bored but I could think of lots of things to do like what I could fish I could catch crayfish I could catch animals I could sleep I can build my own L to I could do a lot of things Ken come on Ken haven't you ever had something you really want to do come on David let's go feed the PS but why all night David would you be scared by yourself on the mountain no Ken I'd have a fire I really want to do it you can't always get to do the things you want David what if you get up there and change your mind I could come home couldn't I but with a fire up there I would be fine at night I ever tell you about these guys David well no you didn't this is a racing pigeon I raised him from when he was a little baby banded his legs we race him in races as far as 500 miles away wow if you train him right they'll come back from that far take them out like 5 miles the first time 10 miles the second time you just have to train them I'm like one of those what do you mean well if you let me go camping I would find my way back all by myself D you got a one track M hold him put your fingers through his legs can are these the kind of pigeons that can carry messages back home yeah why because if you let me go camping I can take one of these pigeons and I could send a message back to you telling you that I'm okay David what am I going to do about you you just won't give up one thing we want to make sure is that enough air can get underneath so that the fire will go for you and then once it's going you can put your heavier sticks on it this looks like it might work let me check these other fires I can I just got a call from your parents I guess you wrote them about going on this over yeah I did well they seem to think you can do it they did yeah but only for one night and very close to Camp oh why can't I go out like the big people do for longer you're really determined aren't you yeah well I've been thinking about it and uh I don't know can you light a fire you know when you go out on a solo you only got three matches yeah and you have to be able to do it with those three or you're messed up well I can do it with one well let's see if you can light a fire with one match David we got to let you go [Music] tomorrow I laid around and stay around this old town too long gone yeah this old long and I feel like I got to travel [Music] Papa rides to Johnny Johnny can't come home Johnny can't come home no Johnny came home Papa rides to Johnny but Johnny came come home and I feel like I got to [Music] travel I laid around and stayed around this Old Town long summer is on almost gone your Winter's coming on don't laid around and stayed around this old town too long and I feel like got to [Music] travel there's the camp and I can't believe I got up here all by myself [Music] woohoo [Music] n [Music] after supper I got to get a lot of wood so I can make a good fire oh and I have to send my patreon message too hey what's that what kind of snake is that a that's just a friendly Old King Snake like the ones we have around Camp he's not poisonous but I better not pick him up it's going to be fun up here with a fire what should I write I know dear can I'm doing fine hold still while I put this message on you good pigeon okay hold still bye-bye Pigeon Go I can do this on one match up oh I'm sure I can do it on sep hey it's going it's going good it's going keep it up keep it up oh it's going out it's going up stay on stay on rats it went up one match left I have to do it on this one I'll get it this time okay Fire come on come on light light oh no it went out I don't have any more matches left what do I do do oh well who needs a fire anyway have you ever had something you really wanted to do so bad that you decided just not to give [Music] up inside out is is a series of programs and related materials developed and supported by 32 educational agencies in the United States and Canada with additional support from Exxon Corporation this program was produced by wvt Northern Virginia educational television under the supervision of nit National instructional television all right what's going on scanner was having a little bit of a freak out uh where am I there I am wow that was kind of idic um and there is a uh precedent uh inside out often has open-ended endings and um some of them are great some of them are horrible but that was kind of nice um was really kind of excited by that how that worked kid kind of living on his own and his or yeah being on his own um his internal monologue uh the one thing he did not learn is what soil was and what it does thankfully we have a film here set up to teach you exactly that enjoy [Music] some people call this dirt but a better name is soil soil is what we usually see plants growing in green plants like grass plants like the tomato plant that Supply food plants with colorful flowers even big plants trees wet soil is mud you may get mud on your shoes and track it into the house that's not a good place for soil to be much of what we call land or ground is soil when we dig a deep hole we can see that soil has several layers the dark layer at the top is top soil the best part of soil for growing things below the top soil is lighter colored soil mixed with pebbles and large Stones what is soil and where does it come from to find out let's go to a beach there you know there's mostly sand have you ever looked at Sand very closely these are grains of sand they're tiny bits of Rock the bits have been broken and worn from bigger rocks containing a mineral called quartz where we find sand we sometimes find clay something like modeling clay bits of dry clay are smaller than bits of sand so small that they feel smooth and powdery Clay comes from granite and certain other kinds of Rock how do rocks break into small pieces one way is waves of an ocean or lake rub rocks together knocking off little chips the fast moving water of a river may also rub rocks together knocking off pieces you can see how this happens by shaking stones in water for a long time this rubs the stones together as waves do leaving little chips in the water chips that have been broken from Stones rocks may also be broken down over a very long time by the action of rainwater or by wind that blows sand and Pebbles across larger rocks in winter water may freeze in small cracks in the Rock the ice forces pieces of rock to loosen after a long time they're so loose that they easily come off as plants grow on rocks their Roots May loosen bits of the rock that come off so small pieces from different kinds of rock become sand and clay sand and clay are parts of soil what are some other parts this is what is left of a leaf the rest of the leaf has already become part of the soil and this is all that's left of an insect that's being broken down into part of the soil bits of plants and animals make up the dark stuff in soil humus how do sand clay and humus get together the wind May mix them the action of rain May mix them in time grass and other plants grow every year some plants die and so do the small animals that live on them all of this becomes part of the mixture this happens for a very long time until the mixture is soil is all soil everywhere in the world like this let's see here's a farm the soil is reddish brown and it seems to have a lot of clay in it here's an orchard in another place this soil is light colored and Sandy a farm somewhere else has darker soil it has lots of humus in it so there are different kinds of soil made up of different mixtures of sand clay and humus to grow plants in any soil water is needed what happens to water that falls on soil here are three different kinds of soil each is in a funnel in a jar this soil is mostly sand when we pour water into it the soil doesn't hold much almost all the water goes right through this soil has lots of clay when we pour water into it the water stays on top very little water soaks into the soil or passes through it this soil has lots of humus water spreads through it the soil soaks up water like a sponge until all the soil is moist in time only a little water pass passes through which soil do you think is best for growing plants this bean plant is growing in very sandy soil this plant is growing in soil with a lot of clay this plant is growing in soil with lots of humus though some plants grow well in sand or clay many need soil with lots of humus we call this kind of soil LOM but plants need more than LOM to grow big and healthy for example these two plants are both growing in LOM yet this plant looks larger and healthier than the other perhaps something is missing from this soil if so maybe we can make it good for growing plants by putting fertilizer into it fertilizer has important chemicals called minerals minerals and humus are not the only things that can make soil better for plants animals that live in soil may help too for instance earthworms earthworms dig holes letting water and air into the soil also when a worm eats soil passes through its body so worms loosen the soil when it happens to rain the rainwater May easily soak this loose soil rain can do other things to soil and to plants and animals in it let's see what happens to two white gloves left out in the rain one where grass is growing the other where there is no grass when the rain has ended we see that the glove left where grass is growing is clean the other is spotted it looks like mud and it is this is soil on the glove soil splashed up by the rain you've seen places where rain has splashed and washed away soil and you must have noticed that there are no plants in these places plants help to hold soil together and keep it from being washed away what's one reason why there are no plants here and no plants here there are many plants here and we know why one of the reasons for this soil we've seen that soil is usually a mixture in it are sand and clay which are bits of rock and humus which is the bodies of many dead plants and some small animals this is soil wait I hit the wrong thing um this is soil and of course uh I don't I wasn't looking at the comments but you know the idea that that kid um that this film was a followup to the last film um and the kid is now hummus humus uh came popped in my head uh let's see um let's learn about the uh the brain this has some great diagrams in it enjoy [Music] this young man's heart continues to beat even while he sleeps his blood pressure remains controlled he breathes evenly regularly the digestion of last night's dinner continues Arie can hear too and all these internal body functions are automatically controlled by a portion of his sleeping brain rhythmic electrical waves have been detected that move to and from and through the human brain when a person sleeps they might look like this these tiny currents are electrochemical in origin and their pattern changes as this same person fights toward Consciousness new things are happening information in the form of sound from an alarm clock is arriving from outside his body and this information must be ignored or acted upon as Arie becomes a little more conscious and alert there is still a different pattern to the electrochemical signals in his brain as other portions of it begin to function as he remembers he was studying for a test last night before he went to bed and that this test is today but after we know there are electrochemical signals in the brain what do we really know about it a model gives an transparent inner membrane hugs the surface of the brain itself a tough outer membrane lines the skull and a fluid between them actually boys the brain up and helps protect it from damaging bumps against the skull bones besides being well protected the brain in an actual brain more than a 100 billion nerve cells receive stimuli decide what to do about them and transmit controlling signals to all parts of the body if we cut through the center of a human brain we can locate general areas of control the forbrain or cerebrum generally controls voluntary activities involuntary activities are mainly controlled both by the midbrain and the hind brain Arie knows that it's in the mid and hind brain that the beat of the heart and the intake of air are regulated and the body's blood pressure stabilized and the mid and hind brain can control quite elaborate motor responses too without our necessarily ever being aware of them Arie can study for his exam with the front part of his brain while the back Parts control the many motor responses involved in chewing with our model once again we can see where trunk lines of nerves connect the body with the brain always in pairs many nerves carry stimuli between the various muscles and organs and the Brain for example this nerve carries stimuli from arie's mouth the presence of food there causes sensory impulses to move to the hind brain which then automatically sends motor impulses back to the various muscles involved in chewing and also to the salivary glands as the food is pushed toward the back of the mouth it triggers new stimuli to move to the hind brain the hind brain then automatically sends out coordinating signals to the muscles involved in swallowing each step of this involuntary process sets off new stimuli which move to the hind brain coordinating signals then return to the appropriate muscles to move the food along and to the proper glands to secrete the necessary digestive juices breathing and blood circulation are controlled in much the same way and many other involuntary body processes are controlled from the mid and hind portions of the brain the optic nerve is involved with vision these nerves control the muscles of the eyes these nerves control facial muscles and Report t taste and these coordinate balance as well as hearing such involuntary processes are coordinated in the midbrain and hindbrain automatically continually keeping our bodies alive and usually without our being aware of them certain other involuntary body responses are coordinated in another important center this lies deep within the forbrain or cerebrum it is a mass of extremely specialized tissue the hypothalamus with neurons sensitive to specific stimuli in the bloodstream for example some neurons of the hypothalamus respond automatically to the stimulus of a high level of blood sugar by turning the appetite off AR is full and it's time to head for school and that brings us to the brain's second function for the human brain clearly does more more than just automatically keep each of us alive as a human being you know consciously that you're alive you respond to the stimuli in your environment from Cars to pretty girls and these responses occur in this part of your brain the forbrain further you are usually conscious of these responses Arie responds to the school bus horn by turning his head and running toward it for he's conscious of the fact that if he doesn't run he may miss it the decision to run for the bus is a conscious voluntary act and occurs in the forebrain but the coordination of the many muscles involved in running is unconscious and the smooth blending of all the signals required is done in the mid and hind brain when the cerebellum of the hind brain is damaged as in this experimental animal voluntary movement is still possible the cat moves toward the food but there is little coordination of its muscles all right um yeah we're going to skip on that I know some of you like cats I mean I like cats um let's uh I you know I was like yeah like this is a great film and then I'm like oh yeah it's about the brain and nerves so there's going to be some Shenanigans um let's watch this film this is uh youth culture World cultures and youth shall ping the acrobats uh and hopefully this won't have anything that's difficult to watch enjoy just [Music] my name is sha ping and I'm 16 years old I'm a member of the Shanghai acrobatic team number three and for the next few months we are preparing new routines for a tour of [Music] Japan I live free form routine I really love acrobatics our bodies have to be very Supple and elegant and it feels wonderful Mrs du says that to be a master acrobat every move and every tiny detail must be perfect and second nature it's very hard work and sometimes it hurts [Music] for [Music] spee [Music] fore teacher Wong wants to know which of us are ready with new acts teacher chiao says the Mongolian line dance is ready they now want to know about our springboard routine I hope Mrs do thinks we're ready she says we've worked hard but there are still some rough moments and wants to know what our opinion
