that for oh for that is that that hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we will watch old 16 mm films and some of you who work in an office environment probably know this phrase uh after a meeting it's like that could have been an email um that last film could could have just been a film strip just like a really simple like you know one frame one frame now it wouldn't have been an interesting film strip and I would argue that that film was not very interesting but uh anyways um you know we watch films we you know we haven't seen that one so and that one was uh did not have a soundtrack uh it was we scanned it uh was some part of the pre-production materials uh and what they would do is they would add a soundtrack although it's like it's only going to be English because there's only English that's visible whatever all right here's an earlier coret film that's about your family it's your family not my family your family enjoy [Music] today we're going to see a story about one family and how they lived together about Tony and his dog fluffy about his sister Nancy about mother who takes good care of the whole family and about father who works hard for his family our Story begins one afternoon after school Tony has been outside playing with fluffy now he can hardly wait to get off his boots to tell his mother something mother mother he cries look what the mailman brought movies movies of us oh yes Tony the pictures father took mother could we see them tonight oh I'm afraid not Tony dinner will be late tonight mother said because Nancy can't help me she's taking her music lessons and after dinner and the dishes it'll be time for bed well it's too bad not to see the pictures tonight these are Tony's hooks father made this place for wrap so the children can help keep the house neat it's Tony's job to keep Fluffy's things put away too it's time for him to prepare Fluffy's supper that's another one of his regular job jobs well Tony Works preparing the dog food just as he does every evening but he's thinking all late dinner tonight no chance for fun together before bedtime but maybe if things go right here fluffy Tony calls good old fluffy want your supper stand up for it but suddenly Tony stops playing look at the dirt from Fluffy's Muddy Paws and Tony's mother she too is unhappy about those Muddy Paws because see what fluffy has done to the clean kitchen floor my my such a dirty floor by the time mother cleans that up dinner will be even later now there'll be no time to see the movies together mother is sorry oh that's too bad what could Tony do what would you do mother Tony says if I wipe the floor and help you get dinner the way Nancy does do you think dinner' be early enough to see the movies together oh maybe Tony gets busy right away maybe if he does some extra work helping his m mother maybe dinner will not be so late after all and if father gets home on time then Tony looks at Fluffy's paw and he thinks wish you wore boots fluffy but I'll wipe your paws anyway so you won't track up the kitchen anymore and make dinner late then as Tony washes his hands he says mother could I help with dinner I could shell the rest of the peas mother thanks Tony for helping with the floor and brings over the bag of peas so Tony and his mother are busy getting dinner working together is fun and you get more done have you ever done this well the time seems to go fast as Tony and his mother work together now let's look in the dining room to see well here's Nancy home from her music lesson and she's setting the table this is one of her regular jobs she likes arranging a pretty table for the whole family to enjoy during dinner then before long the tables all set ready for dinner and out in the kitchen the dinner's all ready to set on the table and mother says we'll be ready to eat as soon as father comes home my I hope he's not late don't you and here's father now coming home from his daily work hello Nancy how are you tonight father says then he calls out hello everybody in the kitchen and oh is Tony Happy Father's home dinner's ready there's time isn't there mother there's time yes Tony says mother there's time hi look what came look what came the movies we took Tony shouts and father says that's fine pictures of shoveling snow and what else shall we see them after dinner how soon do we eat right now says mother as soon as you're ready and so they all work together to get dinner on the table but even though they're thinking about their fun together after dinner they're not going to hurry through the meal itself they make sure that everything is on the table in just the right place they take time to pray together giving thanks for their meal dinner time is happy time for this family they talk about the good things that happen each day sharing their fun with each other Nancy tells us something pleasant that her music teacher said today mother says how he helpful Tony was this afternoon Tony tells of a new trick that fluffy learned father tells of helping a man whose hat blew off and went sailing down the windy Street well now dinner is finished and mother and Nancy are working together washing and drying the dishes Here Comes father were the last things from the table Tony works with his father helping him splice in the titles and put the movies in the right order well it's about time to set up the screen I'll do it says Tony hope Mother and Nancy will be finished soon Tony hurries with excitement they are going to see the movies together the dishes are finished the dishes are finished is everybody set ready lights action oh that's a picture of the first snow of the year about a month ago look at mother sweeping the snow cleaning the sidewalk is one of Father's regular jobs but this time he's taking the pictures there's Tony shoveling too and Nancy helped by chipping the eyes saw Yes work goes fast when the whole family works together and tonight it's exciting seeing the pictures Tony's Family does have fun together oh pictures of ice skating Nancy looks cute in that outfit and Tony that's his first pair of real skates but he does well when Nancy helps him don't they skate smoothly together there's mother isn't it fun to see her on ice skates she's enjoying it isn't she their neighbor took this movie of the whole family skating down the pond together my that was fun wasn't it doing things together is fun it can be in your family too whether it's seeing movies as this family does or working and playing together in other ways as other families do Tony is glad he offered to clean the floor and help with dinner when everyone does his regular job and helps out by doing extra work then things go better for the whole family don't [Music] they excited when they brought out that uh projection screen in that little 8 mm projector um yeah so that's an early uh cornet and it's a early kod chrum so um very exciting when we find those in this a big collection of stuff we've been scanning all right so behind me I've got a right there there's a film scanner right there um for some reason I can't orent myself with the webcam today but um yeah so we pulled this film off the shelf we haven't seen it we're going to give this a shot I was having some problems with um some tension but we'll just we'll see here we go this is what you do speak so loud enjoy 10 months ago an Miller spent most of her day watching television Emma son felt frustrated hemmed in by the Four Walls of her apartment 10 months ago most of these ladies didn't even know each living alone in the same apartment building you lie about it something happened here something to change their lives program director Ruth an gear was involved from the start can tell it best well this is a group uh that we formed over a year ago a group that wanted to work right here where they live and they are what we call a mailing group but in actual fact what they do is is a great deal more than that they help organizations who have to put out mailing of various kinds or prepare kits for people who go out and solicit doorto door and these ladies make fundraising possible you'd be surprised at the response now we started out with just two or three and we have this group it's a representative group we have this many nearly every not this many every Thursday we need every every Thursday we couldn't get along without this program we just look forward to the time we do work in what I like about this RSB I like the dinners they have oh I enjoy that I think it means to them what um it might mean to any of us an opportunity to participate in what's going on around us many times the older adult through no fault of his own is cut off from doing just this sort of thing and through our program we like to think we can bring participation back into the lives of those who still want to participate across the country this Mutual involvement is catching on they are dedicated people they have resources that nobody else in the world had they are very clever and anxious to show somebody else what they can do and we have so many volunteers who have had skills that have laned darant for so long and they just happy to pass it on to somebody else and there are many agencies and institutions that welcome these talents and depend on volunteers for day-to-day operations in San Diego Colonel Owen Clark has some difficulty in running the nation's second largest Aviation Museum we have vol unteers working on aircraft on engines in our library and archives uh collating and sorting out our many photographs and documents so there's no end to the variety of jobs that are available we're very limited on funds and by having the rsbp program there's no question but what it helps us a great deal no way we could get all the jobs done for the public and for their enjoyment without the volunteers Dan Bernett is perhaps one of our most talented uh unteers here under the rsbp program he originally worked on the 1927 Ryan Spirit of St Louis which uh we have a A reproduction of here in this Museum Dan is now in charge of our restoration of jn4 D Jenny 1916 vintage and he has probably probably more talent in that field than anyone we know of I've retired from 50 years of actual building of aircraft and you must understand that in in rebuilding an airplane you have double the time because you have tear down time and repair and then reassembly and it's a long process but it's a a process of uh labor of love for those of us who did work in and learn from the early days we should be proud of what we have done and I think that we should be proud to keep on with with what we have done and keep ourselves busy and uh thanks to RSVP it's made it possible for a lot of people that that wouldn't have been able to to get from their home to the place of where they're doing their volunteer work for older Americans life can often become an obstacle course one of the biggest hurdles for many is the difficulty and the cost of getting from here to there one important part of RSVP the retired senior volunteer program is to provide transportation to help put older Americans in action enabling them to give their time and energy where it is needed most that that there there is an endless variety of opportunity for communities and agencies to use the experience and wisdom of senior volunteers we have a program of older people getting to know young children the program started with us needing more time to give to the children then we wanted to introduce creative Stitchery to the children and they needed almost a onetoone ratio with an adult we as teachers could not give them this therefore we started looking for help and we discovered that senior citizens had the time to do yeah do that down I missed okay I try it now the children I don't think will ever forget what state flower is in which state or what after they worked for many weeks on embroid it and the senior citizens it has given them a very meaningful experience in coming each week to to help the children with these kind of children could not do it without them [Music] they're called The Galley slaves and it's a different kind of volunteering entertaining at hospitals institutions and anywhere they're needed [Music] Co volunteering remaining active after retirement what one does with one's life the choices vary as much as people vary lucenda white delivers meals to shut-ins and for her this job has a very special meaning so you go to this bill and me as a broad and you feel your container you have a certain route I do which is in the northeastern section of hunsville and U I take them to the patient be and warm weather they used standing out on the porch waiting for it but cold weather you have to knock on the door and uh go in and then you take meal and take it back to the kitchen it means uh it's something I really look forward to and uh meeting the people and uh we establish him good report well you are hello there how you fine good fine how's it been since I've seen you pretty good you didn't you going to see me this all it did no I sure you've been getting long fine too I ain't much for talking you not much for talking are you which you might a fine person I enjoy coming out here get the chance of meeting people not only meeting people you really become involved with people we going on ins and I put your meals up for some people if they going to be stimulated at all Let It Be by what I do for them or do to help them rather than just talking to them I don't know where I heard it I've heard it all my life pretty oh what you do speak so loud I can't hear what you say how you doing pretty good Hi how are you Jim Spencer is a volunteer who tutors adults he also helps director Ruth an gear on RSVP business always use another volunteer you know that well I might just have one for you I was out at the mall the other day and I ran into an old friend of mine man named Joe Johnson so I told him about the uh tutoring I'm doing for the adult education program and uh told him how and why I got into it and he seemed to be quite interested so I told him that I'd uh mention his name and phone number to you and that you would possibly get in touch with him if you could find a similar spot for him listen do you see him I run into why don't you give him this explains our insurance and this of course the whole program with our telephone number but I I've made a note so very good I'll move while he's interested sure he'll be glad to get it we have a very very informal interview with volunteers because they are hesitant and particularly the ones who have never volunteered before have a hesitancy in making that first tip Barbara Davis heads another community's retired senior volunteer program she thinks this program serves the government's real function and helping people help themselves this stigma on age in 60 years of age or 70 years of age hopefully through programs such as RSVP and the other programs working with the senior citizens will eventually dispel the stigma attached to aging I think it's a great mistake for some of these people who assume when they retire uh that they are just going to settle down and wait for death to come uh I have no intention of doing that uh because I think that I can find a place where I can be active where I can be useful where I can be happy in association with other people that of course is one of the things that I think RSVP does for all of us Helen Sparks works with Barbara Davis a retired File Expert her job is to help man the RSVP office around here they call her Sparky I think that all seniors should look forward to some kind of activity and not entertainment I I think entertainment uh grows stale after a bit you can play cards so long and then after bit that is off more and more older people now realize that they have a choice that they have the opportunity to do jazella rig taught herself to weave while in her 60s and is now teaching some other retired people Phil Phillips has worked with tools and around cars all his life and when his turn came he sure didn't want to retire now Phil volunteers his time and experience to teach some elementary school kids things they may never have learned otherwise the Elder elderly people like me senior citizens I think if they uh they keep them they need this not only kids but but the senior citizen need to keep keep alive CH they're going to uh your brain and your body both will will dry up if you don't keep active I came in and said I want to serve some and so she said well why don't want you go to the senior citizens Activity Center and see whether you can help them so I came in and we talked for a while and then the lady said the director Mrs Lewis well the greatest favor you would do us if you would learn to weave I said to weave at my age yes we have to lose nobody to weave I've worked with kids for years and I've had a lot of experience working with with uh kids of different ages and uh I I like it it's it's remarkable I think mainly what we are doing here is a little bit maybe a little bit unusual because we really have to learn a lot of things we never learned in our lives and I think just as you are getting older this is very important to to keep young got troubl well that's the story of my life we have always got troubles what's your problem let's see let's figure this out this got to come out of there doesn't it you can factly go away and leave them and they can they can get her back together uh or there might be a few points few the fine points now like one little girl here today on one of these carburetors is some little bitty hair pins and she got those thing right on them and they're hard to go on too they're they're not they're not uh easy just don't uh see how they got it so quick you're surprised there stuffing out of me in weaving of course there's something wonderful involved you have to be creative and if in our age we have a chance to be creative I think that is quite something no sense when a guy sitting down and go to seed you just well do something and enjoy life and this is this is this is enjoyable older Americans in action senior citizens from all walks of life are enjoying themselves more while helping others and this is at least in some small part due to the retired senior volunteer program a part of action RSVP provides that much-needed stimulus to bring volunteers together with agencies with the aid of state and local government action provides the initial funding to programs enabling any American retired and over 60 to give his or her time once or twice a week and yet many volunteers spent even more time than that for as they have become more involved in their volunteer jobs they have become more involved in [Music] [Applause] life stretch yourself uh keep yourself active but if we keep going there's no limit to the Emer age that people expect to be by helping others you're helping yourself last a little bit longer I feel and it's a fulfillment that you will get that you I wouldn't otherwise [Music] get than you thank you so much all right so action I have uh some PSAs excuse me that talk about action uh as this uh volunteer agency um and um someone mentioned in the comments I don't know how uh accurate that was but uh somebody said that that's what's turned into a Mira cor which is is fascinating all right uh kazoo footage man I love me some Kazo uh all right let's uh learn how to make a bronze [Music] enjoy [Music] I'm very pleased with the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art because it was made with great love and respect for the work of the artist now for me it's quite experience because I'm uh seeing uh more than 40 Years of my own work and I think that it's a great lesson for me I don't have any preference for some particular work which is at my exhibition I just go through all the rooms in the garden like I would remember my past life it's a very interesting experience for a living [Music] artist when I look the room of my beginnings while I was still very young and very enthusiastic and in this atmosphere of Paris before the first war marvelous creative atmosphere and then my early Cubist period where I was looking for a new language and then when the new language was assimilated everyone started to tell his own stories and I started to tell my stories I have been now for 44 years a professional sculptor I studied a lot I saw a lot I worked a lot I had the great privilege to have among my friends the highest spirits in the field of art we had endless discussions and from this life experience I came to some convictions these convictions are ruling my life they are ruling also my work among my convictions which I prize the most is the freedom for the artist to go wherever his imagination leads him when I was in 46 in Paris I was asked by father if I would like to make a vision for the Church of a first of all I was a little bit surprised because after all I am not of Catholic faith and I told her to father and he answered me if it doesn't disturb you it doesn't disturb us and I was very pleased with this answer and I said immediately that I will consider to do it I started to think about my vision and for long time really it didn't come until one day I had an inspiration and I immediately saw how the vision should be and I started to make my sketches I made made a lot of them drawings and little sculptures and finally I made a big scale model so I started my big sculpture and I worked for entire year on this virgin it was almost completed when a fire destroyed everything in my studio and the vision was [Music] gone of course the fire was a tremendous tragedy in my life but I immediately started all over again and with the help of friends I started to build a [Music] studio you are surprised to see so many works of art around my place but really I'm not a collector don't misunderstand me I'm a Workman who interest in work done by other people from the prehistoric times until today people say that the objects which are here around me coming from different ages and different places of a kind of unity I think this Unity is because they're coming to me I choose them I I like to watch how the human mind realized with the hand ideas all kind of ideas plastic ideas and human ideas that's why I'm fascinated by all these things which are around me and I love it the atmosphere which it gives me I'm watching all the things every day and every day is new for [Music] me I love my craft because it is like being a Workman is the early morning I'm getting up and I go to work I walk to come to my studio and then over there it's not only a physical work but also intellectual I have the feeling that all my human potentialities are busy while I'm working and it gives me a tremendous satisfaction it gives me also uh a lot of rain because in the evening I'm just worn out every evening nevertheless I walk back home and then uh I can read a little bit or listen to [Music] music to make a sculpture I don't have really any process it's very different sometime I'm making a lot of drawings before I start to make my sculpture sometime it comes spontaneously just like that without sinking automatically I started to build my new virgin and now it is completed in plaster and will go to who the [Music] founder [Music] [Music] the processes of sculpture of course are very complex and complicated if you work in clay you model well you have to cast it and after that it goes to bronze and the casting of bronze is a very long and difficult process especially if it's done like I like to do it in the last wax process it's something which is very slow before you have a result but you have to love it to go into it [Music] so you see I'm working on this version since [Music] 1947 now I will have a lot to work to R touch my waxes and then after that to Chisel the bronze and quite a lot of work before it will be completed I have now my sculpture in in wax whatever I'm doing now will appear in the bronze even my smallest fingerprints after that we will add to my sculptures a lot of Gates or kind of tubes which will help the vx to melt it out through this channels and and after that the metal to come in when it's ready we cover it with the kind of mixture of plaster and silicon and when everything is finished we have our mold this mold is put in a Kil where it will stay for a few days until all the VX is melted out after that we will put the mold in a kind of a pit which is at The Foundry and we will put sand all around so that when the metal which is coming with a tremendous strength will come into the mold it should not burst then the metal is melted and poured into the mold after that the mold us to cool off and when it's cool off we take it out from the pit and we break the [Music] mold when we break the mold we find our sculpture in metal plus all this tube which we added [Music] these tubes have to be CAU away then the artist is chiseling with the Chisel and the hammer chisling directly into the metal to even up all the material [Music] [Applause] [Music] h [Music] when all that is finished we give color to our sculpture with all kind of oxidations of different acids until we come to the color which we like then the sculptur is [Music] finished the history of my Virgin is very rich in all kind of experiences Pleasant unpleasant tragic marvelous it seems to me that sculpture is just a miraculous medium of course I'm Prejudice because it's my craft I love it but to see how something is born from your hand something that didn't exist before and now is here existing taking place in the space it is just miraculous I made this inscription in French and I used my Jewish name it reads Jacob lipit Jew faithful to the religion of his ancestors made this virgin for the better understanding of human beings on this Earth so that the spirit may prevail was pretty awesome actually um we went from kazoo music to uh erratic uh pipe organ but yeah you know you guys you guys can handle it all right let's uh let's watch a king r uh Cartoon hopefully this has will not get us in trouble uh like uh yesterday I should tell you about yesterday uh when we get back all right so here's King R in the dishes [Music] enjoy [Music] [Music] ch [Music] M that was delicious said King R after dinner ah yes really delicious said the magician in fact We'll Wash up for you as a treat King R said to [Music] cook oh uh yes said the [Music] [Applause] [Music] magician King R and the magician carried the dishes into the [Music] [Applause] [Music] kitchen [Music] wash them up by Magic King R said to the magician that would be cheating cook doesn't use magic said the magician oh all right I'll wash and you wipe said King Robin [Music] he washed the first [Music] [Applause] [Music] plate then he washed the second plate it was going to be a slow job um not even a little magic King R asked hopefully cook doesn't use magic sighed the magician all right you wash and I'll wipe said King r [Music] the magician washed a plate and passed it to King R king R dropped the plate and it smashed on the floor now look what you've done said King R now look what you've done said the magician shh said the magician cook is coming quickly the magician made a magic spell at once the plate was mended and Dry King R looked at the rest of the dirty dishes then he looked at the magician the magician looked at King R then he looked at the rest of the dirty dishes he made another magic [Applause] spell once all the dishes were clean and dry then cook came in well done she said you've washed them just as quickly as I could have but of course she added there were two of [Music] you [Music] King R um it looks like uh things went okay so yesterday I was I showed uh kindergarten Twigs from a city tree which was this fascinating like cornet film uh made for educators uh basically about uh teaching um kindergarteners in an inner city environment and in part of it there was a speech by Martin Luther King and it wasn't the I Have a Dream speech it was another one and uh I woke up this morning with a YouTube message saying that that video had been blocked uh that uh Emi owned it and they took down the entire hour plus long video and it just bums me out like uh Martin Luther King's estate are are so grabby uh and greedy with the content of Martin Luther King Jr um that it's hard to have any presence of him without without this Hammer coming down and so what I did is I I basically removed the speech so that the rest of that entire show yesterday uh can be seen online but you know it's not censorship but it it is censorship in a way like it really bugs me that you have someone who he wasn't perfect but he he said amazing things he uh made people feel better about themselves and about um what could be and it's all being clamped down because of the Legacy the Legacy estate who want to make money off of it and they're like well we do it because we also want to maintain the Integrity of the message well it's like no you just want to make money uh and that's not the first time that happens a lot with uh artists uh whose estate feel like they know better and it's basically to Main maintain the um the cash flow um so yeah I'm bummed out by that but it's just kind of what happens um and I I think that uh it's it does a disservice to uh King and his works all right anyways um and I did mute the other music that I thought was going to get me in trouble and sure enough it was something else that got me in trouble um and you know so related to that like I've we at AV Geeks have actually dealt with some of the Legacy stuff uh someone came to us with a uh quarter inch open reel recording of the I Have a Dream speech that was done at a high school I believe in Rocky Mount uh months before it was done on the Washington mall and so we digitized it for them uh for this uh Professor who had it and um who was writing about it because of its correlation to Langston Hughes and then we said oh well you should also take it to someone who really knows how to sweeten the sound and so we took it they took it to George blood um audio which is based near Philadelphia and they tweaked it and made it better um but yeah we've done a lot of stuff with uh Martin Luther King's Legacy we've transferred home movies what he shows up in uh and television news stuff uh when he was in Nashville uh stuff that has happened when he visited Raleigh so he's got this Legacy that goes beyond his words and so it's just frustrating anyways getting off the Soap Box um so uh anyways everybody have a great rest of your day and weekend uh we love showing you stuff and today was a wild wild ride I think as far as what we
