foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where sometimes we accidentally scan a film in reverse and forget to flip it so that's what we saw was Turtles in reverse so um I hope that added to your knowledge that Turtles sometimes dig up the eggs that they lay and then take them back and and go somewhere else and that they also can uh uh swim backwards I guess uh because this film was scanned there was no soundtrack um what you didn't hear was the beep beep beep beep as they backed up all right well let's watch a uh nature film another cornet nature film but this time going in the right direction this is uh Cactus desert uh wild places enjoy [Music] let's go to a wild place and see what's there [Music] let's look at some of the things that live in this wild place this Cactus desert deserts are usually sandy or rocky this one is Rocky deserts have little rainfall most like this one get very hot so early morning is the best time for looking around cactuses share this desert with plants that are like trees this is an unusual Ocotillo tree it has flowers than animals like this ground squirrel eat hummingbirds are attracted to the red color of the flowers [Music] they feed on the sweet watery nectar in the flowers foreign the hard coverings of beetles help keep them from drying out in the hot desert what helps millipedes is staying underground most of the time but a millipede will come out when rain brings water to the desert after a rain many wildflowers grow in bloom and make seeds the flowers will soon die but their seeds will grow when it rains again an elephant tree can live for months or years without rain it has leaves but loses them in dry times this adaptation helps it keep from losing precious water these Barrel cactuses store water in their stems plants in the desert grow slowly they stop growing when it gets very dry here and speed up when there's rain that's when flowers grow on the cactuses the flowers attract bees and other insects this Chuckwalla also feeds on flowers a chuckwalla is one kind of lizard plants grow slowly here in this hot dry Cactus desert this is the largest kind of cactus here a Cardon cactus a fly catcher has made its nest inside one in a hole a woodpecker made in the cactus the flycatcher has been out early hunting food for its babies a juicy Berry will help them get the water they need animals here often get water from the food they eat before the desert rocks get too hot this squirrel searches among them for food foreign are reptiles and like other reptiles they have to get warm before they can move around birds and mammals don't need the sun to stay warm they're called warm-blooded but reptiles like the Chuckwalla lizard are what we call cold-blooded animals when the Chuck Wallace sends itself on a rock its brown color makes it hard to be seen [Music] it's becoming too hot on the desert for many of the small animals a turkey vulture soars high in the cooler air above the desert a rattlesnake finds shade under a rock ledge the rattlesnake will stay in the shade until night when the cactus desert will be much cooler then it will begin its search for food a morning dove moves into the shade The Thrasher hides from the Sun thank you the antelope ground squirrel is one of the few small animals that have stayed active in the hottest part of the day it eats the fruit of the choya cactus spines on the cactus that protect it from larger animals don't stop the squirrel the spines stick in its paws but it can easily pull them out before it eats the watery berries of the cactus another small animal in this Cactus desert makes its safe home among the spines the cactus wren builds its nest there it can walk on the spines without hurting its feet and can easily get into its nest with food for its babies but the spines keep other animals from getting into the nest as the day goes on and the desert begins to cool animals become active again a woodpecker has been hunting food for its babies now the sun begins to set in the cactus desert hummingbirds return to their nest [Applause] it gets cooler very fast now as it starts to get dark out the coyote comes out of its den now it's time for the coyote to hunt for the small animals that it eats oh [Music] pieces called joints fell off some of the cactuses during the day now at night wood rats eat the joints collect some of the joints then takes them back to its hiding place under some rocks [Laughter] it's safer for the rat to eat here than it would be out in the open it has to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes that hunt at night rattlesnakes have special Senses they can tell when the animals they hunt are nearby by the heat the animal's bodies give off up above the desert floor in a cactus is a cactus Mouse Nest the mouse and its babies are safer up here than they would be down below like most of the animals that are active at night Cactus might sleep through the day the mouse will search for food all night until the sun rises and a hot day comes again to this wild place this Cactus desert [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] this is a kinescope so this was uh edited on video and then they transferred it back to film by shooting having camera aimed at a high quality monitor and I don't know if you can see like there was a slight kind of barrel lens distortion um I saw it but I looked for that type of stuff uh anyways um so let's just keep going with uh animals this one is on the scanner this is the Pussycat that ran away enjoy [Music] this is a story that takes place in a land where the winters are long and dark and the summers are short and Light so light that during part of the summer the sun shines all night long this land Which is far far away is called Norway [Music] at the southern edge of a little Lake a tiny mirror rule on the hill above a little tiru tumor makes friends with a water lily that just wants to dream the whole day through and the winds play with the Violet that cannot keep quiet for it has a story to tell a story about Eric and the Pussycat that ran away now if you listen carefully and keep very very quiet you can hear this story and find out why the Pussycat ran away and why Eric promised that he would always try to be a good boy it all happens on a farm in the middle of the Fjord country of Western Norway there are cows and goats and chickens just like the ones here in our country Eric and his little brother yawn have come here from the city to spend their summer holidays with grandfather and grandmother the boys enjoy feeding the hens but to tell you the truth most of the food goes somewhere else foreign they play a game guessing how many eggs there might be in the nest this makes it fun to gather the eggs for grandmother their cousins haunts and Ula prefer to play Indians all day long Eric and Yan take part in everything that happens on the farm in the middle of the summer the grass is cut and when it has dried it is taken to the barn grandfather's horse blocking works hard these days so Eric and yon feel that they can help do their share by feeding her some extra hay what a thrill it is to get that free ride back to the barn [Music] one of the Lambs on the farm has lost its mother so cousin Kari has to feed it milk from a bottle Eric and yon have never seen anything like this before [Music] in the Fjord a long inland there are many islands and on warm days it is nice when mother brings them here it is great fun to search for the little seagull babies and to watch the other seagulls Wheeling overhead the babies are hard to find because they look so much like everything around them foreign have made friends with the big dairy cows and like to be here at nuking time [Music] Eric always brings his little boat so that it can be filled with fresh milk for the kitten that is his best friend this summer pussycat eats almost everything that is put in front of her but she just loves warm milk so Eric makes certain she gets all she wants yes pussycat is his best friend for sure he has even made a little bed where she can sleep any time she wants to taking care of her all the time keeps little boy very very busy foreign all day long Eric plays with pussycat even when they take milk to the dairy with grandfather she has to go along [Music] where are we going today wander's pussycat but she doesn't really care because she likes to go everywhere that Eric goes grandfather Eric yon and pussycat are constant companions the boys love to listen to grandfather's stories to hear him tell what he did when he was a little boy [Music] they love to listen to mother too when she tells them about the great ocean and the shells and the seaweed and about the tides that come and go she warns them about the tides and tells them that they must never play Dom by The Fjord alone Jan plays with his little boat and pussycat just enjoys herself in the sunshine everything is nice and quiet in fact I guess Eric feels it is too quiet for all of a sudden he takes the boat from yarn and oh see what he does with it he throws it into the Fjord [Music] when Eric is so mean to yawn says pussycat I don't want to play with him anymore and she goes away [Music] [Applause] [Music] now where did pussycat go foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] Eric looks all over he comes all the way back to the farm when he finds the bed empty and no pussycat in any of the buildings he knows that she has really run away Eric wanders around looking for pussycat he really doesn't know where he is going because the only thing he is thinking about is where to find his dear little playmate and thus he comes to places he has never been before maybe if his mother knew it she wouldn't like him to be there at all [Music] he has so often heard mother tell about the Big Forest that he starts to look for pussycat here even though he has been told never to come here by himself [Music] it seems as if he's getting into trouble right away even though it is only the smallest creatures of the forest the ants trying to attack him [Music] while Eric gets hungry start to eat some berries he finds then he realizes his mother has told him never to eat anything he finds growing wild in the fields so Eric doesn't dare pick any more berries little by little he's been getting tired because he's been searching everywhere surely pussycat has really left him and has run to far away places never to return but what's that [Music] Eric is scared he suddenly realizes that he is all alone in the forest he feels as if all the trees were trying to reach out and grab him [Music] thank you what kind of a sound is that a bear maybe a witch oh no isn't that luck it's grandfather foreign [Music] father says he hasn't seen pussycat either [Music] and then he tells Eric that of course when he has been mean to yawn pussycat prefers to play with all of the elves and fairies in the forest now Eric promises himself that he will always be a good boy to yawn to Mom and pussycat and grandfather to everybody if only pussycat will return to him [Music] and suddenly the rain that the Thunder has been talking about comes down grandfather and Eric run to a little shed that stands in the forest it rains and rains Eric wonders if pussycat has found a place where it is warm and dry finally it stops and Eric and grandfather row across the lake toward the farm Eric is sure now that he will always try to be a good boy [Music] Yan is already asleep in a little while Eric is asleep too remembering what grandfather told him he dreams of pussycat playing with the elves and fairies far far away in the forest [Music] foreign [Music] the next morning Dawn's bright and clear foreign [Music] have already had their breakfast and now they both start looking for pussycat they just feel sure that with two such Brave boys working together they will succeed in finding her [Music] thank you let's look all over says yawn no no pussycat [Music] thank you but [Music] be dangerous for young help in a hurry [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] father thinks that Eric is only playing no he says I have work to do finally he understands and hurries to help [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] is it really pussycat yes it is Pussycats has seen everything that happened she has seen Eric give his boat to Jan she has heard Eric promise always to be a good boy now they can all be together again Eric takes pussycat and the four of them grandfather John Eric and pussycat all start for home the sun is still Shining the summer is by no means at an end if you lie down in the grass and listen carefully you may hear other flowers telling Tales of what happened on many such beautiful summer days [Music] it's kind of sweet um the uh you know there's no indication when I looked at the title uh that this took place in Norway but there you go um and also the fact that the little boy was going to get lost um still pretty great uh but you know animals in the wild you have to be careful because especially if they're lost or scared they can be um very dangerous and so don't approach them or don't try to pet them here's an example right here um uh with learning to read maps enjoy [Music] foreign [Music] you look lost do you know where you're going do you know where you are maybe I can help I've got a soft spot for lost people and you're lost here catch [Music] this is a photograph that's right a photograph it's a very special kind of photograph because it was taken from an airplane flying overhead and looking straight down on this area it shows a lot of places you'll recognize there's the bridge that crosses the river the little park that's not far away and at the corner of that building there's a funny little speck that looks terribly lost that's you [Music] now that you have this bird's eye view you need to know that right now you're here and the place you're trying to get to is over there with the number of Clues I've given you you should be able to find your way please don't get lost again [Music] you know [Music] are you still here what happened [Music] hmm the photograph has so much extra information that it's confusing all of the buildings cars and other things get in the way and you can't see how to get from here to there I think I can fix that this is a lot easier to understand than that photograph it's so simple and I I think you missed something let's try it again here's the photograph and a simpler way of showing the same area I got rid of the photograph and let symbols show where places and things are a symbol is a drawing that stands for or replaces something else like these orange boxes that stand for buildings the little tree designs and green color that show where the park is and the deep blue that stands for the river as you can see color can be a very important symbol you know a map is a tool that helps you find your way from one place to another and with these new Clues this thing is really starting to look like a map [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] you still look lost so the map didn't work for you huh what are you gonna do now your plan is to keep on walking until you find it that's great you'll just get more loss than you are now why don't you just take a taxi foreign I'd help you out but I'm a little short myself wait a second where's that map I gave you [Music] [Laughter] [Music] what you've got there isn't really a map not yet a map must have a title [Music] so you know what it's a map of a map must also have a legend the legend shows you what a map symbols mean of course you already know what a symbol is a symbol a symbol the symbols are all the lines dots boxes and colors on a map that stand for real things you look like this is starting to make sense to you well I have another clue that should send you on your way a map should also have the names of streets buildings and places of interest printed on it so you can easily find where you are and how to get where you're going pretty neat huh [Music] Hey look now you can find the zoo [Music] let's try another one see if you can find this very beautiful fountain [Music] hello there oh sorry but I just had a thought do you know in which direction you're going no I mean which direction north south east or west most Maps will have one of these it's called a direction pointer it will show you all four directions and if you happen to know which way is north and point the pointer in that direction something neat happens the streets on the map will be pointing in the same direction as the real streets out there so a building to the right of where you're at on the map will be on your right hand side it also works with left front and back I told you it was neat and I was right wasn't I hey Wade how far do you have to go to get there if you don't know how far it is then how do you know you'll be able to get there on time this is called a scale and it will help you find the distance between places to use the scale you must first know where you're going but you already know that then you need to know where you are which is right here then you need a piece of paper and something to write with use the paper to measure between where you are now and where you're going hey wait you can't measure through the buildings unless you can fly you're going to be walking around the buildings measure along the streets and around the buildings where you'll have to walk that's right Mark the paper to make a record of how far it is from here to where you're going now hold the paper up to the scale and it'll show you how far it is in miles or kilometers it's not very far but it is getting late I think you'd better hurry [Music] well I'm glad to see you made it a map can be a very useful tool if you know how to use it just remember that a map is like a photograph taken from an airplane because it gives you a bird's eye view of the world a map uses symbols to show where places and things are a map has a title and a legend the legend tells you what all of the symbols mean a map has the names of streets buildings and other important features printed right on it a map has a direction pointer and a scale the scale helps you find the distance between places you're such a patient person just standing there listening politely and oh my I've got to get going good luck [Music] thank you foreign [Music] at one point I did a show called those damned mines where I showed a bunch of mom films and I keep describing discovering new ones so I might have to do a volume two um let's learn about the microscope and its uses enjoy [Music] the powerful eye of the microscope extends the range of your eye when you use it correctly the microscope is your window into the world we seldom see a world of strange creatures a world where a single drop of water may be teeming with scores of one-celled animals and yet this strange World is Yours to explore yours to investigate by means of your microscope as the first step in learning to use the microscope we must become familiar with the names of the main parts of the standard instrument the base is so named because it supports the microscope it is fairly heavy to make the instrument stable the stage may be compared to the stage of a theater it holds the specimen to be viewed and therefore is where the action takes place the objectives are the lenses which are nearest the specimen or slide the objectives are attached to the revolving nose piece which allows the objectives to be easily changed the tube is part of the main body of the microscope so named because of its tubular shape the eyepiece is the lens located at the top of the tube nearest the eye the adjusting knob is used for focusing and the mirror for reflecting light onto the specimen an additional focusing knob is found on most modern microscopes it is used for critical focusing which we'll learn more about shortly so you're ready to begin using the microscope and using the microscope the first step of preparation is in making certain that all lens surfaces are clean and free of dust and lint if the instrument hasn't been used for a Time the lenses will probably need cleaning use lens tissue never your handkerchief and gently clean the objectives and the eyepiece the glass from which the lenses are made is soft and easily scratched so be very careful then unless you are instructed otherwise tilt the microscope body until it is in a comfortable position for you to use adjusting the mirror for the best light is your next problem place a slide on the stage and direct the light onto the portion of the slide that you'll be viewing turn the low power objective into viewing position by revolving the nose piece the low power objective is the shorter of the two it'll snap into place now look into the eyepiece and turn the mirror slightly from side to side until the light appears to be even and comfortably bright turn the low power objective down with the adjusting knob until it nearly touches the slide but watch carefully if you turn too far you may break the slide and damage the microscope now look through the eyepiece and focus by turning the adjustment knob toward you until the specimen on the slide becomes distinct then use the fine adjustment knob to bring the specimen into sharp Focus this is called critical focusing most of your studies of the small plants and animals will be done using the low power objectives since the low power gives you a better overall view of most plant and animal structure you will use the high power objective in some of your studies of cell structure however and it is important to know how to use it correctly first turn the revolving nose piece until the high power objective snaps into place now before focusing carefully adjust the high power objective until it is very near the top of the glass slide in focusing the high power objective turn the course adjustment knob toward you until you begin to see an image then slowly turn the fine adjustment knob back and forth until you're sure the specimen is in clear sharp Focus care in critical focusing will produce a clear sharp image that is easy to see and study a person trained in the use of the microscope learns to keep both eyes open while viewing the specimen this helps avoid eye strain and makes the work less tiring you can learn this technique too now don't squint try leaving both eyes open and covering one eye with your hand concentrate on The View through the microscope then slowly remove your hand doesn't work we'll try it again don't worry it'll come to you and it'll help to make your work much easier and now let's review the most important rules for using the microscope handle the instrument carefully it is delicate and expensive keep the lens surfaces clean with lens tissue adjust the mirror for even comfortably bright light carefully adjust the objectives to a position near the slide then Focus first with the course adjustment and complete the focusing with the fine adjustment and learn to keep both eyes open while studying the specimen remember that by mastering the use and operation of the microscope you are preparing yourself to use and understand even more complex scientific instruments the microscope is your key to an Unseen World it is your key to knowledge and a better understanding of life itself so use this key and use it well for it may one day unlock the door to steal undiscovered secrets of science foreign [Music] [Music] put it in a projector little after transfer matter is foreign foreign foreign foreign foreign foreign foreign his book you know so I'm going to do an experiment I'm not going to say where this film came from nor am I going to say any of the countries involved I'm just going to see if uh Facebook decides to put me in jail again um but for those of you that have followed in the past you know where this came from and I was very excited to see a film that was about assembly in the film projector and I gotta say that's pretty complex and what it seems like I'm I'm seeing and I could be totally wrong here someone who's an expert in that uh countries uh AV at the time they might have been using like a certain type of amp for audio and then they just kind of plug that in and like you using different parts um that are used also in other types of uh of AV Equipment I I don't know but that's why we put this
