that that for oh hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm films and that last film was Oriental farming which was a very generic title um that really didn't address what we saw this was from the Mogul Brothers collection and so they just I don't know they just slapped a bunch of stock footage together and put some intertitles and they're like I don't know what are we going to call it uh and then it shows up in their C in their catalog and then you could rent it or you could purchase it and uh so there you go let's see what we got here so behind me on the scanner if I'm going to do this yes I got it all right it's just I have to remember to do the opposite of what a mirror would be uh I have a film setup called stress um I don't think we've seen this and I'm not sure of the title cuz it's written in a faded magic [Music] marker like I don't know if you can see it how faded it is stress was like hidden um all right enjoy oh sure why not we've only had it three times this week already but who cares it doesn't matter Mike I just thought maybe we could go out to dinner somewhere nice tonight honey we've got more important things to talk about than eating yeah like packing and house payments and moving and your new job Mike I said I'd take care of the packing I can do it while you're at work tomorrow honey I'm sorry I know things are hectic but things are bound to get better I guess I'm just a little worried about how we're going to make it now we sort of depended on your salary oh and now everything's messed up is that what you were going to say no Chang not messed up I mean now we've got even a bigger reason to work even harder for a while we got to put the little bundle in snowsuit right oh Mike come on and relax just a minute I'll take care of the packing later honey I got to finish the packing now I can't do that to you just let me get these last few packages done okay all right you all worry a lot please don't take [Applause] offense can't you turn that darn thing down huh I said can't you never mind what's the problem the problem is you've got a hearing deficiency that's what it sounds like we're running a teenage disect here or something did you want me to keep the radio turned lower then why didn't you simply ask me rather than yelling at me all the time I might even listen and we might even solve this problem just don't get your tail in a knot I'm sorry honey but that noise just really bugs me well if something's bothering you why don't you mention it before you have a fit how are the windows coming okay I'm on the last one now lucky it wasn't termites at least dry rots not so bad honey why don't you take a nap while I finish dinner and I'll clean your brushes for you I don't need a nap I'm going to clean out the seller as soon as I finish this Mike you've got to get some rest you were sick last night and you hardly touched your lunch you can't keep pushing yourself Jenny I tell you I'm all right well you don't look all right your stomach's been bothering you hasn't it when are you going to see a doctor I don't know that I am I'm there's nothing really wrong with me well that's awfully Brave of you but I'm thinking about me and the baby our baby needs a healthy father all right I'll go Mike come into my office will you have a seat man Mike You' be glad to know that the pain in your stomach is nothing serious but I'm glad you came in anyway so that we can keep it under control tell me what's been happening since you were in for your last checkup well I had a great year last year I got married I got a promotion dad's discovered I bought a house and we're going to have a baby hold it that's a lot of change no wonder your stomach hurts I don't get it DOC these are all good things why would they make my stomach hurt they are all good things but they produce stress anyway even good things can cause a certain amount of anxiety your body doesn't distinguish between good and bad stress yeah well I've been working a lot harder and I've been living with another person so I guess that's a big change too isn't it does your wife know how you feel if something at home bothers you tell her if you feel tired from over work tell your boss don't let these pressures build up I want you to read this booklet that our hospital has putting out it'll help you to understand what stress is doing to you it also gives some ways to help you manage your stress yeah I sure hope it does some good doc you will also feel better once you lose a few pounds you use food the way a smoker uses cigarettes you're over eating not because your body needs food but because you're seeking Comfort it may seem that you are counteracting the stress but that's only temporary actually you're creating more stress extra weight means your heart your body your lungs and other organs must work harder well sure I'm glad I came by to see you doc guess the rest is up to me now isn't it I want you to read that booklet from cover to cover it'll tell you a lot about stress I'm sure your stomach will quiet down and I want to see you in a month to see how you're doing thanks Doc I'll be back in a month good help Mike honey Lunch is ready you had an appointment with a doctor today what' she say I'll tell you in a minute you know this week off has done you wonders you look great you look pretty good yourself in fact I don't think I've ever seen you look so good well the best thing I could have done was go to the doctor and reading that pamphlets really changed my life I like going to the gym and getting in shape and I think I'm beginning to relax a little bit I speaking about the doctor what' you say when do the baby do she said we can expect them soon no I was talking about the baby babies Mike we're about to have twins [Music] that's I was hoping to hear [Music] a like a sad trombone uh but yeah all right uh speaking of blood here's a educational film called blood composition and function [Music] enjoy [Music] [Music] there isn't much of it only about 5.6 L about 6 quarts of blood in an average adult human but you can't get along very well without it blood can be thought of as an organ that carries oxygen and nutrients to body tissues and carbon dioxide and other wastes away from them or it can be thought of as a fluid that contains different kinds of cells in suspension [Music] to see what kind of fluid it is what kinds of cells are in suspension and how the blood transport system works let's do a little close observation through a [Music] microscope the watery fluid is called plasma plasma makes up about 55% of your blood the rest is made up of three kinds of cells the most numerous are the red blood cells the erthrocytes that give your blood its reddish color they contain the red protein pigment hemoglobin in 1 cubic mm of your blood there are from 4 and 1/2 to 6 million red blood cells these erthrocytes red cells are dis shaped with a slight depression in their Center you can see that more clearly in this electron microphotograph blood cells are sometimes called cor pusles a mature human red blood cell doesn't have a nucleus each is about 8,000 of a millimeter in diameter 8 microns and about 2 to 3 microns thick the red blood cell's main job is to carry oxygen to all the cells of your body an iron complex called heem in the Hem hemoglobin Loosely unites with oxygen from your lungs and then passes the oxygen onto the [Music] cells an average Red Cell lives about 120 days each second about 2 million of them are destroyed and replaced by new ones the white cells the lucaites are a second type of cell in your blood the red cells outnumber them 600 to1 here's a closer view the one irregularly shaped cell is a white one white ones vary in shape the two largest here are white cells as the red cor pusles stream by In This capillary you can see several white cells tumbling along very slowly this is typical for them unlike the red ones the white cells can slip through the walls of small small blood vessels and into body tissues a white cell is about 10,000 of a millim 10 microns in diameter there are five types of them three kinds are called granulocytes they seem to belong to one family all three have very grainy cytoplasm every white cell is capable of changing its shape and moving like an amoeba amiibo characteristics include the ability to find and ingest particles of [Music] food in this demonstration the white cell is ingesting yeast cells this is the way that cells eat and Destroy harmful bacteria and other microorganisms that may enter your body white blood cells are your body's first line of defense not only do they destroy bacteria but they also produce antibodies and repair wounded tissue a cubic millimeter of your blood contains about 8 to 10,000 white cells at any point of infection or injury white cells will gather in enormous numbers eventually they help to form pus a rise in your white blood count is one indication of a physiological problem now let's observe the third cellular component of blood mixed with these white cells are small dark bodies blood platelets there are about 300,000 platelets in a cubic millim of your blood a platelet is about 3 microns in diameter about a third the size of a red blood cell the main function of platelets or thrombocytes is to Aid in the clotting of blood we'll see how this vital function of coagulation takes place this is fresh blood about 10 minutes after exposure to the air coagulation seals a wound and stops the blood flow we can trace the process to make this fresh blood begin to clot we need to add nothing but time we'll cover 12 minutes in a few seconds with time-lapse photography coagulation involves a series of chemical reactions the clot forms and separates from the remaining fluid which is blood serum let's examine the coagulated blood the cell mass is clumped together crossed by dark strands to which the blood platelets stick in time-lapse photography you can see the long strands precipitate among the blood platelets these threads are fibrin a sticky protein material forming a network from invisible fibrinogen in the blood the fibrin strands ENT trap the blood cells and stop the flow of blood how does all this actually work inside your body we'll see a demonstration in which a capillary in a rabbit's ear is [Music] punctured almost instantly repair begins blood platelets sweep toward the injured [Music] Point strands of fibrin form the red cells begin to Clump the flow begins to slow down the blood is coagulating within 10 to 15 minutes the wound is sealed and normal capillary flow resumes in an electron microphotograph coagulated blood looks something like curdled milk blood clotting is one of the several important jobs of the three kinds of cells that make up your blood the platelets that help blood clot the red cells that transport oxygen and the white cells that destroy bacteria because blood cells die thousands of them per second they have to be replaced constantly all blood cells come from the long bones of your body the central cavity of each of these bones is filled with marrow and blood vessels pass through the bone tissue we'll take a closer look the marrow is packed with the Primitive cells from which all three types of blood cells develop here they originate and in an electron microphotograph of bone marrow you can see the newly formed [Music] cells [Music] but the three cell components make up only 45% of your blood let's investigate the other 55% the plasma first we'll put a few drops of a chemical into the blood sodium oxalate or citrate this will prevent normal coagulation the discovery of such anti-coagulant chemicals made it possible to store whole blood in blood banks and use it in [Music] transfusions time-lapse photography over a period of 8 hours shows a clear separation of components without [Music] coagulation blood plasma is at the top the three kinds of blood cells are below one more demonstration will show the difference between blood plasma and blood serum blood with an anti-coagulant is on the right normal blood on the left the pale liquid collecting at the right is plasma the liquid separating from the blood clot on the left is Serum with a centrifuge we can completely separate the blood plasma from the blood cell cells plasma is often used in transfusions it can restore blood volume that's been lost in bleeding blood serum is also used for transfusions in cases where the coagulant ability of plasma isn't needed Serum is a result of coagulation but won't produce it because the plasma proteins responsible for coagulation have been used up and are no longer available plasma and the cell components form the whole blood that flows in a closed circulatory system closely related to the blood and its function is lymph lymph the yellowish fluid Flows In lymph vessels that are adjacent to the blood vessels this illustrates how white blood cells and plasma both green symbols ooze out of the capillaries that retain red cells and platelets the two components white blood cells and plasma make up lymph in the lymphatic system there are valves that regulate flow similar to valves in the veins the lymphatic vessels bulge at lymph nodes these contain white blood cells that remove bacteria and foreign materials an infection may cause the nodes in your neck and armpits to swell lymph and blood are related through the exchange of tissue fluid tissue fluid is like blood plasma and it seeps through the capillary walls the filtered plasma tissue tissue fluid bathes the cells of the body through the capillaries of the lymphatic system the tissue fluid returns to the blood alt together the lymph tissue fluid and blood work to maintain homeostasis the stable environment of your body the ability to maintain this stable internal environment makes your body much more independent of its external environment your good health depends very much upon the complex functions of that marvelous stream of Life your [Music] [Music] blood a throbbing gristle type of uh soundtrack to it uh some of the I think from Heathen Earth maybe um yeah fascinating uh let's see what do we got I got another film set up on this on the uh film scanner and did I title it appropriately I did uh I've seen this but I don't think I've shown this it's called Uh survival run enjoy [Music] right here it is is I got it okay Mike is that the same category we oh [Music] fascinating wait where am I where am I where did I go there there I am yeah so um you know pyramid released or distributed a bunch of films that were made around this time which show uh people doing kind of extreme sport types of things uh where uh hangliding and landing on like following an eagle and landing on this like super high thing what is what was that called was that solo um and all these other kind of things where it's you know the human human uh Endeavor uh and the challenge and all that stuff so this is definitely of that ilk um so uh let's what do we got got some time still uh let's watch uh a similar type of film but totally different um this is daring polar exploits of the 19th century join God bless the widows that sure to weep for the loss of their husbands that sank in the Deep they've left their homes like many more they've left their home s to return no more in Baff bay where the Cold Wind Blows the fate of Franklin nobody knows he's left his home like many more he's left is home to return no [Music] more those sad for boings give me pain since my dear Franklin has cross the main with 100 seamen both Brave and stout for to find a nor Western passage how Her Majesty's government offers a reward of £20,000 to be given to such private ships of any country as May in the Judgment of the board of admiralty have rendered efficient assistance to Sir John Franklin his ships or their Crews to extricate them from the ice in the Arctic regions after many days at Sea we proceeded steering along the edge of the main ice we sailed on between icebergs till at length we had only a narrow and crooked channel for our passage several polar bears were encountered by our party hunting these massive animals provided our men with great sport bare flesh has a gy taste and is not too palatable the whole of the ice within range of sight shortly after closed and hemmed Us in for an hour it was doubtful whether we should not be nipped but we fortunately escaped soundings were struck in 129 fathoms we found ourselves surrounded on all sides by huge ice flows having the appearance of gigantic markers in a floating graveyard on our first communication with the natives of Prince Regent Bay they finded eagerly to the ships asking what great creatures are these the esano began their traffic with the advantage of practiced Traders accordingly no device or cunning was left untried by them it has been the custom on one side to overrate the virtues of savage peoples and on the other to exaggerate their vices the women in particular were more outrageous than I had ever observed before for besides disposing of their garments which they never hesitated to do more than one actually offered to bter her children for a few needles the state of celibacy is unknown the mere supposition of such a condition is treated as a CA nor did they know how to believe that any of us could be without wives Every Woman therefore finds a husband as every man procures a wife but often inevitably under a system of polygamy the most expert Hunters obtain the extra women as being best able to maintain them esino indeed will give anything to procure what they desire a young woman observing that one of the officers had not much hair on his head immediately offered to supply him with her own at the easy price of a curtain ring take the case of kanayo he was about 65 years of age he lived to the westward and had communication with a tribe in that direction where the females were most numerous when a wife was wanted for some of his own party he transferred to him his own wife and went for another to himself a friendly service which we understood he had performed no less than five times and he had now brought his sixth spouse by whom he had three young children to visit three of his former wives and we witnessed the whole party living together in Perfect Harmony atlak was one of the best looking she was remarkable for having large eyes and she was perfectly aware of the pity she possessed the Eskimo is a skillful and resourceful Hunter his patience is indeed astounding for he will sit many hours at an opening in the ice in the extreme cold waiting for a seal to rise to surface for air and then as quickly as Lightning he'll drive his Haroon home seldom missing the animal or his Mark upon the whole there Eskimo in the unqualified state of nature in which we found them were the happiest of human beings when hunting Caribou natives are in the habit of driving these creatures into the water where they no longer prove to be a match for a man in his kayak after replenishing our stores of fresh meat we bid the esino farewell and proceeded on our search for Sir John and his missing party of explorers the barometer continued to fall and the wind increased to a fresh Gale accompanied by snow and much drift without the least warning we were struck by a heavy Gale The Strain was severe in every part the ship was thrown up by the stern to the 7 and 1/2t Mark another Rush drove irresistibly on the lared quarter and the poor ship cracked and trembled violently and no one could say that the next minute would not be her lust what the result of that night might have been it is impossible to say and painful to contemp complete in less time than it could be spoken there was the Stillness of death as early as 4:00 a.m. the crew were working for Longs saw a Stern and the men having got the ice saw to work and singing to time as they lifted it up and let it down made such progress that in the course of the for noon they got through 30 ft after much audious labor we managed to secure our remaining vessels in this improvised Harbor by the time the long wind tonight closed down upon us every possible Arrangement had been made to provide for the men's comfort and safety in the matter of warm clothing we experienced some trouble in making out of lists of what was actually indispensable it may therefore be of future use to mention some of our equipment 185 pair of woodmill hes 130 swans skin drawers 195 comfortables 130 Welsh wigs 130 flushing trousers lined with Bay and 70 bare skin blankets provision for 18 months consumption, 1500 Gall of spirits 100 Gall of Brandy 50 Gall of wine the men were all in First Rate condition and health though they had been pent up for a whole winter I attribute this partly to the solitary effects of Messa zops Burton nail a large quantity we were lied with every week I cannot pass over the remembrance of the Comfort we received from having that Splendid article aboard as soon as Christmas was over and the new year had set in we immediately commenced preparing our traveling parties our first plan was to lay out a large Depo on the opposite Shore keepe lady Franklin occasionally while traveling we were fortunate enough to obtain a fair wind to assist us along the drift being sometimes so strong that it made some of the objects appear quite distinct we had hardly proceeded halfway across the channel before we were partly stopped by about 10 mil of hummocks I may almost say mountains of ice with pcks and shovels our whole party was obliged to cut a road through some heavy piles of ice before we could proceed with our sledges there was no alternative we must pass them though each party had to drag a ton weight after it through these ice fields we had to find our way en camping must be done quickly otherwise our friend zero who had been driven away for the time by the day's exertions will in very short order take hold of us we were in a miserable plight from the fatigues of this day and passed a comfortless night to resume our hard and Frozen clothing was also a most difficult and painful operation by great Good Fortune We Came Upon a herd of walrus some of which we were forced to slaughter to supplement our rations traversing these ice Fields was a very laborious task and occupied us for some hours the ice being extremely rugged and hummocky and also covered with loose snow which lay very deep among the crevices I here began to doubt what our actual position might be when I now considered all the indentations of the coast we had seen or passed traveling in the summer when the water is on the ice flow is by far the worst of all it is indeed trying both to officers and men having to go all day through water a little above freezing point sometimes up to one's knees and by the constant splashing becoming wet all over having to live all the time on such small rations keeps the subject of food constantly before one relics of gallon Sir John were discovered in a can at Victory Point what became of the 105 men Remain the deepest of mysteries at arabus Bay a boat containing two skeletons which were identified as belonging to the Mis explorers the esino story tells of the exhaustion starvation and probable cannibalism on the following morning our party gathered together to give our illustrious companions a decent Christian burial we are taking to our boats the weather is worsening today is our 103rd day on the ice the most wretched of my life the blizzard seems endless the ice is on the Move crushing and overlapping the tremendous wave carried away everything that was loose only a few things saved the danger is very great and increasing at every moment oh joyful sight a ship Dead Ahead we hoist our colors we sh out but they are too far off to hear our voices she comes towards us I wave my cap over my head and give them three tear thank God we have been sighted another day in this predicament and all would have surely perished yeah now I'm lost again so I have a bunch of windows open so it's difficult um anyhow uh thanks for tuning in today very much appreciate your eyeballs um there was some interesting stuff there uh I very much like it when I can just pull films off the shelf and and show them to you and not have to rely so much on the other films that we've already digitized uh we have to have those other ones because we have to kind of um if the machine's not behaving or we have to rewind a film that's how we do it so uh if you like what you saw hit the Thumbs Up Button hit the like button uh you can also uh use the super thanks to donate to our cause where we will spend it on uh storage space rental and um potentially shelving units uh and you can also watch other films on our YouTube channel and uh thanks so much and we will see you again tomorrow Thursday yes everybody have a great rest of your day we will see you soon bye
