foreign foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and uh think about uh so that last film was a birds of an inland Lake and what's uh this is an excellent example of is someone's hobby which was probably bird watching bird photography Wildlife photography uh where they actually sold the footage to um a small film company film short company and the company distributed it um I think that this is fascinating because this this is not the first example of this and certainly we see other Wildlife photography but we also uh you know hobbies that go beyond just the normal hobby um it's like oh I shot all this footage of trains I Love Trains and then that gets distributed by a Blackhawk or by somebody else uh so it's kind of this interesting formalized uh amateur slash professional uh film um and certainly some amateur photographers then started making educational films with narration and and all that but this was uh kind of great it was in color too which is awesome I have a couple of films in that series uh that we watched uh all right so behind me is a film scanner and I have a film set up this is a news magazine of the screen film but I don't know what year it is it says on the can like it's kind of it's kind of marked out it says news magazine screen and it looks like it says 1970-71 but I don't think that's what this is so um it let's do some research on comments and see if we can figure it out so I can name the file appropriately all right enjoy [Music] in Gloria the United Nations victory that seen certain becomes Retreat as a million Chinese Reds invade Korea from the north United Nations troops fall back across the entire Frozen Korean peninsula here in Western Korea men of the eighth Army marched for days without sleep and successfully escaped the Communist trap but as the Chinese strike Across The Manchurian border their trap does close on 20 000 Marines and infantrymen of the 10th Corps in the East scattered into small isolated units by the violent red attack these men in bitter fighting gradually rally and regroup around the town of hagaru but they are still surrounded to fight their way out they need a miracle [Music] it is 60 miles from the Chang Jin reservoir on the hagaru plateau to the Escape Port of hangnam the 15 000 encircled at hagaru must fight their way through a hundred thousand Reds and down an ice-blazed winding Mountain Corridor to hangnam their first goal is Koto 10 miles away Fighting by night in weather that reaches 30 degrees below zero moving by day the units from hagaru March into Koto to link up with 5 000 other isolated Marines they have walked for 18 hours Gone without sleep for three nights but they left no wounded and no equipment we didn't come out as stragglers one officer reported we came out as Marines in Retreat and still surrounded these fighting men take prisoners foreign are evacuated by air from an emergency airstrip not one casualty is Left Behind [Music] when there's a moment's rest in a raging blizzard such were the men of Valley Forge it is now 14 days since the Reds attacked a hundred thousand strong to close the trap on these twenty thousand soldiers and Marines days of blizzard and battle of fighting and freezing but a miracle does come to pass as these marines reach hangnam it's Harbor packed with navy ships here under enemy guns 105 000 troops are taken safely off the beachhead along with 90 000 refugees 18 000 vehicles and a third of a million tons of supplies it is a feat without precedent and warfare A fitting climax to The Saga of Bravery written in the blood-stained Snows of North Korea sailing down the coast to new defense positions in South Korea these men are already back on combat Duty prepared to hold the line as long as human courage can hold it last June the forces of communist imperialism broke out into open Warfare in Korea the United Nations moved to put down this act of aggression and by October had all but succeeded then in November the Communists threw their Chinese armies into the battle against the free Nations by this act the Communists showed that they are now willing to push the world to the brink of a general War to get what they want the Communist rulers are trying their best to split the free Nations apart Unity with our allies is now and must continue to be the foundation of our effort working together the free Nations can create military forces strong enough to convince the Communist rulers that they cannot gain by aggression working together we hope we can prevent Another World War the job of building a strong America must be done on our farms in our factories and in our homes it must be done by every one of us wherever we are and whatever our jobs may be many of you who are young people will serve in the armed forces of your country nothing you will do later in life will be of Greater benefit to your homes your communities or your friends many others of you will have to work longer hours in factories or minds or males think of this not as longer hours but as more planes more tanks more ships more arms for the defense of our homes and our way of life we must remember that our goal is not war but peace [Applause] as the Chinese Communists first United Nations troops into retreat in Korea British prime minister Clement Atlee arrives in Washington for conferences with President Truman on his way here Atlee met with French Premier plevin to discuss France's role in meeting the new threat also on hand for the historic week of conferences are secretaries Atchison and Marshall as Mr Atley leaves the White House the chiefs of State jointly announced their determination to fight on in Korea and to speed the rearming of the Atlantic pack nations in Europe as the best answer to worldwide communist aggression later addressing the national Press Club the British prime minister says that the aim of the United Nations is to bring about peace but he emphatically adds her forces are fighting alongside yours and you may be certain that in Fair all foul weather where the stars and stripes fly in Korea the British flag will fly beside them [Applause] [Music] in Washington Charles E Wilson confers with defense secretary George Marshall following Wilson's appointment as Supreme director of America's vast industrial mobilization as boss of wages prices and War material Mr Wilson who has resigned as president of the general electric company will be second only to President Truman in the nation's War emergency program foreign communist General Wu and his delegation arrive at the United Nations in reply to the charge of Chinese red aggression in Korea made by U.S delegate Warren Austin Wu makes a two-hour speech defending the presence of Chinese Communist armies in Korea and in turn accuses the United States of criminal aggression continued efforts by a succession of U.N members to bring about a ceasefire and the end of Chinese intervention are blocked by Russia and her satellites with a hearty send off from Russia's Yakov Malik General Wu departs for China by way of Moscow still silent on peace still blaming America for the Korean War from Brussels however comes good news for the anti-communist countries as U.S Secretary Terry Atchison and 11 other atlantic-packed foreign ministers hammer out concrete plans for the defense of Western Europe the wheels are set in motion for speeding up production and establishing a unified Western Army under one command General Dwight D Eisenhower president of Columbia University is named as commander of the new Atlantic Council armies the general whose skill and diplomacy led the way to the Nazi surrender at Reams is of all Americans perhaps the one most admired by Europeans his own countrymen have hailed him as the highest type of soldier and citizen now ikeisenhower goes back on the active duty for which he's always held himself ready it's agreed that if anybody can do the job in Europe Eisenhower can 600 Protestant church leaders meet in Cleveland to form the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA the delegates represent 29 denominations 150 000 individual churches and a total of more than 31 million members formation of the new Council after nine years of planning consolidates eight major interdenominational agencies and has been hailed as one of the greatest moves towards Christian Unity since the Reformation the council will go forward with efforts in four Fields education life and work home missions and foreign missions the right Reverend Henry Knox Cheryl presiding Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church takes over as first president of the council then the council joins in prayer for the people of the United States and for the success of the United Nations in bringing peace to the world in Miami a colorful night parade seen by three hundred thousand ushers in Orange Bowl festivities leading to The Clash of the University of Miami with Clemson as the American college football season comes to a climax in the traditional bowl games more than ever this season football interest turned to Southern gridirons here the news magazine of the screen presents highlights of the South's great bowl games [Music] appeal of an exciting American sport now the Orange Bowl itself where South Carolina's unbeaten Clemson Tigers take the offensive against Mighty Miami Clemson halfback Billy here hurls a forward pass to end Bob Hudson and a moment later star pulled back Fred Cohn makes the first half's only score Clemson leads 7-0 [Applause] McQueen halves a day at the circus pageant fills the crowd but greater Thrills are still to come for after Clemson has scored again and leads 13-nothing Miami gets moving halfback Frank Smith twists his way deep downfield to the Clemson five-yard line [Music] the Clemson's lead is cut to a fragile six points as Harry malios scores for Miami another touchdown would give Miami a chance to go ahead and here it comes quarterback Bob schneidenbox passed to Ed Lutz and Lutz runs it to the Clemson 12-yard line [Music] a few moments earlier Miami was behind by 13 points now as Jack Hackett throws to Frank Smith for a touchdown Miami takes a 14-13 lead in the fourth quarter still leading by one point Miami receives a Clemson punt Harry malios twists and turns on a sensational touchdown run that seems to give Miami certain victory [Applause] [Music] but the great run doesn't count because of a penalty and the last moment safety gives Clemson two points and the game 15-14 in Dallas Tennessee meets Texas in the Cotton Bowl and here with Tennessee's Hank lauricella doing the carrying is one of football's greatest Broken Field runs watch him Dodge [Applause] [Music] Al Payne finishes what lauricella started with a lazy pass to John gruple In The End Zone 10 D takes an early lead seven to nothing then Texas takes command after one touchdown Ben Tompkins he's a 34-yard pass to give Dawson and suspends the half leading 14-7 Texas leads by a single point 14-13 when a Tompkins pass is intercepted by Tennessee's Jimmy Hill in the game's dying minutes Hill runs into Texas territory and volunteer hopes stay alive now to grab Victory from defeat Tennessee's lauricella passes to Richard that puts Tennessee 26 yards near the goal three minutes remain Laura Stella makes the most of them as His smash sets up a Tennessee Cotton Bowl victory 20-14 [Music] in New Orleans Mighty Oklahoma unbeaten in three years meets Kentucky in the Sugar Bowl Kentucky's quarterback babe Pirelli throws the half-back Wilmer Jamerson in the end zone I'm only two minutes Old Kentucky leads seven to nothing Oklahoma battles to keep its tremendous string of 31 straight victories but Kentucky won't stop a collision ends a 16-yard game then it's Pirelli again showing off his throwing skill Al Bruno catches the pass and goes to the one foot line one play later Kentucky lead is 13-nothing finally late in the fourth quarter Oklahoma gets moving five times this year Oklahoma has come from Far Behind to win and the Sooners do it again [Applause] well this play Nets them a first down [Music] [Applause] and on the next play Oklahoma makes its first score on a pass from vessels to Green but that's as far as Kentucky will budge Mighty Oklahoma raided the nation's best football team balls to unconquerable Kentucky 13-7 ending the greatest winning streak in modern times and another year of football goes down in sports history [Music] and it just ends wow thanks uh so much for the uh the research we figured out it was late 1950 early 51. um based on the various bowl games and what was happening politically um awesome uh let's see what do we got set up here so many options this one is an interesting uh short theatrical short probably um and it features someone who's I think is kind of like uh Robert Ripley Ripley's Believe it or not this is another columnist who did interesting stories and this one uh is fascinating it's about Emperor Norton a view based in San Francisco know about Emperor Norton uh regardably this has an actor in blackface which is just lazy and stupid that doesn't really make sense why it's in it but here it is Emperor Norton [Music] [Music] that's all the time being it's been a tough day looks like they've planted rice well that may bring on another crop of Nortons don't you know an old-time rice Trader was the first and only emperor of the United States what United States these United States Norton the first emperor of the United States now I know you're kidding no strange as it seems a few years before the Civil War the head of a bank in San Francisco was sitting at his desk signing some paper Norton is here shall I ask him to wait what keep an emperor waiting I should say not throw him in good morning emperor morning Edward we would think more of States you don't cross him give him anything he wants I'll pay for it that's him for a Norton you mean that man is a king sort of and you pay for it yes sir your majesty are begged to announce that and you mean to say he always got away with that sort of thing no once he was arrested and brought him to court good evening your majesty have you a charge against this man masquerading is the Emperor of the United States is that the complete charge no you're on a suspected of Insanity The Prisoner commit a murder no your honor steal anything no create a public disturbance no well officer I failed to see a case you've been overzealous of the performance of your duty your majesty the court wishes to apologize for the conduct of this officer I doubt the ruler of any other nation in the world could stand as guilt as before a court of judgment the courts of the Empire have always been just inform the officer that we have forgotten the incident in the future please remember the respect it is due the Emperor of these United States and the protector of Mexico just emperor of the United States judge judge I dropped Mexico too much trouble down there thank you sir thank you sir all-provisions 1880 when a stroke carried him off and the United States once more became a republic the reign of Norton was truly a monument to human kindness a conspiracy entered into by a whole city to protect an old man San Francisco gave him a burial worthy of his rank ten thousand citizens marched in his funeral procession he was insane but strange as it seems honesty and sympathy won him an Empire of voluntary subjects yeah foreign [Music] he was a local character that I think was uh documented in some interesting ways uh you know we all have characters that live in towns and cities but none of them claim to be well some of them might actually claim to be uh someone of Greater uh significance than what they really are um so uh yeah so it's it's kind of interesting nonetheless but I do recommend uh as some of you have recommended is to look look up the story um because this dramatization yeah it was all right oh okay so what do we got so many things to watch so many things to watch um so on Friday I showed uh a bunch of films about shoplifting because Friday was supposedly you know the busiest shopping day of the year um so shoplifting films seemed great uh this is a film that I had queued up but I hadn't shown uh and this is a interesting yet problematic film uh problematic because the person who is featured in it um is problematic it's Bill Cosby this is uh the uh Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids uh this film is um about uh the problems of shoplifting and explain to kids um and you know Bill Cosby plays this uh moral narrator but um I know I mean he uh his personal life kind of trounced all of the uh the good that he did which is unfortunate because he did a lot of good um and so I showed this but I know that this is problematic so here it is take two they're that's right that's just what he did what's wrong with that when he didn't pay for it you mean he stole it that's right and he took a couple other bars too little Justin stealing I can't believe it well neither can I did you tell him it was wrong sure but there's a soldier dude named Harlow who's been telling Justin a lot of junk about it and this is cool to swipe stuff so when I told Justin to steal was bad he just laughed at me he did did he well we better call Justin's Mom right away hey hey hey look who's coming our way what's happening man yeah huh oh I'm all done babysitting that's what I want to talk to you dudes about I can't talk about it out here let's go in the clubhouse where we can be secret it's my cousin Justin been taking things without paying for him you know and he learned this little deal from Harlow hey I think Harlow's pretty cool yeah he's cool all right he's so cool he blows in the cool air he got some Hollow before he gets a lot of harm done [Music] and Justin's really got old Fat Albert worried not that Albert expects him to make who's who but if he doesn't change Justin's Essence to make who's through and it isn't only Fat Albert who's worried about Justin what what did you say I don't believe a word of it Justin your cousin Albert claims you stole some candy bars that I was flying well there are a lot of things you can say about Albert he's overweight he's not over beautiful but he's no liar look there's no evidence nobody saw me take those candy bars what did you do it Justin because I was hungry Come On Son you're not making any sense your father's right Justin somewhere somehow we've slipped up and teaching you right from wrong why are you making such a big deal out of all this why why didn't he keep his big mouth shut Cash dick who you trying to Jive you turkey that action's nowhere yeah that's all we need to get busted you don't see any chains on my wrist do you your problem is is you're all chicken oh oh look uh I gotta get moving fast think about it hey hey what they can't ever say he wants us going up play big deal with him sounded pretty good to me yeah I barely did that hollow's got to be stopped he's bad news for a dude who's bad news he's always good news with the gravy his gravy boat is about to get sunk I think it's time we call the police about Good Old Harlow but David wouldn't be me still Mushmouth and um what's the other guy's name the weird Herald no not weird Harold the guy with so there's the guy with the uh toboggan is that much mouth and then there's the guy who's got the toboggan over his face both those characters I mean they're they're all great in that regard and the music is also awesome is that a toe Tapper I don't know uh at some point I'd love to compile just the songs from Fat Albert because they're all fascinating um and interesting and some of them don't make any sense the one about the hospital doesn't make any sense um all right uh so I got another film set up on the uh the scanner uh let's give it a watch enjoy let me change the title before we get it started how about that oh I did already how about that sometimes I'm on the ball hahaha [Music] where are they the eggs they'll get cold calling for me will you joke all right all right what's all that yelling about I told him to call you the eggs are getting cold Saturday morning I have to worry about eggs getting cold it's time you were up anyway you have the back steps to fix and paint five days a week I get up at six to get to the factory and seven days a week I get up early looking after this whole family you think I have time to fix those steps don't worry they'll get fixed a couple of extra I'll sleep is going to make that much difference that's what you said last Saturday and the one before that okay okay I said I'll fix them so long and paint them and paint them today today foreign how come I have to do everything because I said so and I don't want to hear see come on all right I can't show a film about old radios and let it just Peter out I have to figure this out all right it's being a pain all right I will fix this uh in the meantime oh we're almost done um I'll show this tomorrow how about that we'll show it in its entirety tomorrow I apologize for that um it's a short reel so it it gets um knowing that way uh in the meantime well I don't have any short films set up um all right uh what is a co-op let's watch that oh foreign [Music] yeah Jack Roberts and Joan Howard are here Mr Davenport how did you recognize him after all this time send them in higher boss well here we are Dave and uh here's the story and the pictures I know we were gone a little longer than six weeks to get a story I didn't even send you out on well didn't you get our telegrams correct I sent you out to get a human interest story on the three-day County Fair six weeks 30 you'll Breeze into the office with a two-ton manuscript on Cooperative well you wanted human interest we got it for you look when we find a story that covers not just one copy but a whole country then it's our job to get your job is to get the story I assigned you what am I supposed to do with a story on cooperatives a co-op is a business we thought the same thing but in the last six weeks we've found that cooperatives aren't just a business Dave co-ops are people that's it co-ops are people all kinds in the city in the country everywhere people who need something and then work together to get it wait a minute look Dave here's what we mean a farmer digging that's right a farmer digging an ordinary post hole and to build his fence he's got to dig a lot of those holes a whole hour for each one of course this machine can do the same job in a few minutes the cost of about five cents a hole the machines like this are expensive too expensive for one man to finance each back-breaking hole that costs Five Cents by machine takes him an hour he's working for a nickel an hour but when a group of people got together they could afford this labor-saving machine and that's what cooperatives mean people getting together to help themselves and this kind of cooperation isn't new to our country Dave Pioneer wagon trains were a Cooperative Venture if there ever was one and in Pioneer town so were the early barn raisings and road building and volunteer fire departments our people have always worked together and they still do but in a much more highly developed way while visiting the different co-ops Dave we learned that modern cooperatives follow seven basic principles of operation One open membership no one is excluded because of race Creed or color [Music] two one Member One vote which means Democratic control [Music] three a limited interest on share capital [Music] four Savings of a Cooperative are returned to members in proportion to their purchases foreign [Music] neutrality in religion and politics [Music] six trading on a cash basis seven constant education of members and Cooperative principals current events and all matters which affect their standard of living that's how it is and these seven basic principles work so well that they serve as a guide for thousands of successful cooperatives I think that's a story worth telling look at it this way Dave why do you sweat it out at the office every day well we'll put groceries on the table pay for the doctor and the dentist and see that my kids get a decent education I'm no different than anyone else but what's that got to do with cooperatives just this working together in a Cooperative make it easier for themselves to get the very things we all want to understand the difference between a non-profit Co-op business and an ordinary business in starting an ordinary business one man or a few puts up the money then he buys or manufactures merchandise tells this merchandise to his customers marking up the price in the usual way at the end of the year he has earned a profit which he keeps well what's wrong with that not a thing but the co-op set up is a better way a co-op is a non-profit Corporation created by a lot of people to provide goods and services which they need first they buy Capital shares which return a small rate of interest then they elect the management and are ready to start doing business at the end of the year the difference between income and the expense of doing business represents the savings for the people who own the co-op part of this savings is held in reserve and part is returned to members as patronage refunds so you see a co-op business is designed to benefit not a single individual but a large group of people and all co-ops start in just about the same way Mr Smith buys two participating shares Lars Olson takes five [Music] Mrs Lyons takes three shares the Joneses Ward eight Matilda Collins buys four shares but Helen Wilson can only afford one you can see how it works anybody and everybody get together to raise the money then the next step is to join an open meeting in order to elect a board of directors it doesn't matter how many shares you bought you have exactly one vote one vote the same as the young man in front of you or the couple in the back of the room the same as the attractive young lady or Your Neighbor Next Door or your neighbor who lives five miles away [Music] after you've elected your board of directors they appoint the management which will run your business and your Co-op is ready to operate [Music] it doesn't matter to which Co-op you belong or how many each one is your business operated by you for your own benefit and the benefit of all the other members every time you make a purchase you get a receipt these receipts are the basis for the patronage refunds the more you spend the greater the refund again it's not a question of which Co-op you belong to or how many shares you hold you receive your refund only in proportion to your patronage now there are those who claim that these refunds are profits and should be subject to the usual corporate income tax on profits but a co-op is non-profit and refunds represent money you have paid above the actual cost for services and products so this money they want a tax never belongs to the co-op at all it belongs to the individual members all the time but co-ops do pay taxes in some communities co-ops are the largest single taxpayers this Hue and cry about taxes has been raised because cooperatives are successful enough to give even the largest monopolies a run for their money it wasn't always that way after the first world war Farm prices collapsed that was bad enough but wartime food production had exhausted the Earth itself the source of food needed food and fertilizer the one thing to save the soil was pegged at high War prices this made it impossible for the average farmer to replenish the soil so that he could grow a decent crop as an individual he was helpless but there were others in the same boat by joining together they became a cohesive unit capable of positive action they formed a co-op the early days were tough but they solved their problem when cooperatives manufactured their own fertilizing compounds fertilizer companies soon were forced to lower their prices in the face of competition Cooperative competition that kept prices down for the farmers even those who weren't Co-op members in the years that followed as the movement spread cooperatives have saved American farmers millions of dollars Co-op leaders figure that if co-ops can do 15 of the total volume in any given field oil appliances groceries they can keep prices at a reasonable level in that field now wait a second and one breath you say co-ops are started by a small group of people presumably on a small scale now you have them holding down prices in huge Market areas there's no Miracle about it Dave every Co-op isn't successful they can fail just like any business grocery co-ops for instance have sometimes been started with too little planning too little Capital food stores need highly trained experienced management for large volume but carefully planned co-ops don't stay small they grow like the petroleum Co-op when large corporation-owned Farms began to mechanize their equipment with small individual farmer found himself in a familiar position on the spot squeezed by Monopoly he couldn't afford mechanical equipment because of prohibitive operating cost on such items as gas oil and grease his kind of horsepower could not compete with machines so he and his neighbors fought high prices by organizing a co-op certainly this retail Co-op started on a humble scale but small though it was with the savings it made possible its members were soon able to match machine with machine and compete with anybody on an equitable basis well the success of the first petroleum Co-op encouraged other people to start similar projects in their sections of the country but all the people knew that retailing supplies was just scratching the surface of the real savings they could make and so at a meeting of one of the co-ops members suggested expanding operations by creating a wholesale the pros and cons were argued in open meeting the majority favored setting up a wholesale this meant that other retail co-ops had to be contacted each in turn voted in favor of setting up the wholesale then the necessary funds had to be obtained the local co-ops by the purchase of voting shares provided part of this money and Co-op members and individuals by the purchase of preferred shares provided the balance of the money the wholesale started on a small scale by building storage tanks so that its members could get the savings of buying petroleum products in bulk but management soon discovered that major savings could be made in the production end so the wholesale built its first refinery short-sighted oil companies thought this had gone too far they put on the squeeze by making it impossible for the co-op refineries to buy crude oil the Department of Justice started to investigate this action and crude oil soon flowed to their refineries again but the co-ops didn't intend to be squeezed twice they got their own oil wells they leased oil-bearing land and did their own Drilling they bought their own pipelines the cycle of growth was complete through open competition they had a healthy effect in providing a price yardstick for an entire industry furthermore for the co-op members savings are made Right Down the Line from their Wells to their gas tanks and they're entitled to these savings because they have earned them by their efforts and vision the co-op belongs to them it is their business controlled by them for their benefit and service and everyone who can benefit from the services of an established Cooperative may join and if there is no Cooperative they can start one any kind they need for example in 1934 when even Japan was almost completely electrified certain power companies were charging such excessive rates that only one Farm family out of 10 could afford Electric Service this youngster studied about Tom Edison and his electric lamp he had also heard the story of Aladdin and his wonderful lamp he thought both were fairy tales did you ever pump water and tote it 100 yards up to the house [Music] was by hand in the cold dim light of a lantern [Music] and did you ever try to preserve food for a week at a time in an old-fashioned ice box [Music] did you ever get a headache trying to do needle work by the light of a kerosene lamp [Music] and did you ever see women grow old before their time sweating over a hot stove to do the family wash [Music] today the picture has changed with the help of loans and Technical advice from the rural electrification Administration people set up their own electric co-ops what the power companies wouldn't do the people did for themselves now these co-ops serve more than 2 million consumers to the farm family this was literally like coming out of the Dark Ages for the farm women it meant household work became routine rather than back-breaking drudgery [Music] for the farmer it meant hours of Labor saved from his chores foreign yes electric co-ops literally opened a bright new world now this little fellow knows for sure that Tom Edison was a real person his parents and millions like them are seeing to it that their children will enjoy some of the benefits of life that they themselves had the vision to achieve [Music] in the last two years hundreds of thousands of farmers have joined cooperatives more and more people are discovering what Cooperative Savings and service can mean to them foreign [Music] cooperatives members can insure their cars their belongings their lives not only do they get the savings made possible by their own management but most of all the people control investment of their own savings people are catching on to what this means and some Cooperative mutuals are the fastest growing insurance companies in the whole country furthermore Insurance Co-op members enjoy the personalized service of their own employees who understand their problems credit unions are another Cooperative service in which the people learn to manage their own money they pay their 5 million members in the United States and Canada higher interest on deposits than other savings institutions so as to encourage members to develop Thrift and build up savings accounts loans are made to members without red tape or high so-called service charges and Credit Union Savings mean that members have more money for Better Living do you need farm equipment cooperatives have their own farm implement and Appliance factories and their savings mean that you can buy more and better for Less [Music] the same thing is true about all types of household appliances [Music] do you like to eat well [Music] people need to buy more for their food dollar and well-managed Co-op food stores help them to do that you'll find Co-op canned foods marked with the quality and contents plainly labeled on the outside of the can because the co-op member owns his store he doesn't try to fool himself about the merchandise on his shelves his savings are not dependent upon inferior quality and furthermore Regional co-ops affiliated with national cooperatives Incorporated have a buying power of 250 million dollars the savings this huge buying power makes possible is handed down to members through their local co-ops [Music] and we all like to live well as comfortably as we can within the limits of our income in the face of building costs prohibitive to all income brackets housing cooperatives are making homes available with typical Cooperative Savings and service cooperatively the people select their land and develop it themselves this group action permits substantial Savings in the cost of individual Lots by planning as a group purchasing as a group and building as a group the people make further savings on construction costs it's just another way in which Cooperators make their own lives a little Fuller a little happier thank you and in order to protect and preserve life itself the people have built Cooperative hospitals yet only a short time ago they were told that in small towns it was impossible to have complete medical staffs and Technical equipment impossible these people had something at stake their lives and the lives of their families and what's more they had learned well the power of Cooperative action what was impossible for them individually could be accomplished by them as a group but surely the cost of modern medical attention and Facilities would be expensive expensive in a Cooperative Health Plan the cost runs between 40 and 120 dollars a year for a family of four and in the direction that one generation has led the way the new generation will follow healthier and stronger and perhaps wiser but one thing they'll have in common a firm conviction that cooperatives and the Cooperative movement are a part of the American way of life all right where do we go from here you print the story and we got a few days off no you're going back on the road oh for Pete's sake Dave we just got home you wanted to sell me a story okay I buy but I don't buy half a story I want the whole thing you say co-ops have helped to solve some of today's problems all right I want you to go out and keep in touch with the co-op movement I want you to find out what they're doing about other problems the co-op people seem to have a workable pattern they know that a business made up of themselves run by themselves and for their service isn't only a true expression of democracy but it's also a practical way of maintaining a better way of life if you're right and I think you are co-ops are people and the future of the Cooperative movement is as unlimited as the imagination and initiative of the people foreign [Music] yeah so he had a long career before he was on Leave it to Beaver he uh I think he was a minister Presbyterian Minister um he appeared in a lot of uh Industrials like this and sponsored films I have another film uh that recently I had to throw out because it was super vinegar but it was about salesmanship where he plays a Salesman but he also directed films uh in some television so yeah even before he was beaver's dad he had a long history of
