[Music] over here a shoplifter can be anyone housewife a mechanic or even a movie star as a group they have very little in common except the compulsion to take things some may desire things they cannot afford but the majority just want to get something for nothing in some the need to take things is an illness and can only be overcome by the help of a counselor or doctor shoplifting is a serious crime last year shoplifter stole almost four billion dollars worth of merchandise that amounts to taking twenty dollars from every person in this country the FBI reports that it is the fastest growing type of crime in the nation in fact the amount of merchandise stolen from stores around the country has tripled in the last 10 years the problem had spread and stories are fighting the battle full force with trained security guards and sensitive detection equipment unfortunately all of this costs money scores estimate that five cents out of every dollar spent to pay the cost of shoplifting the average shoplifter gets younger every year in fact over 50 percent are juveniles a recent survey of young people showed that at least half of them had stolen once in their lives and six percent had stolen as many as 100 times most young shoplifters come from nice homes and Families but when friends pressure to do it for a dare or for the thrill of it they sometimes can't resist most are not aware that the risk involved in stealing even a small item might mean a criminal arrest and a record for life some might get away with it once or twice but the odds are that a few shoplift you will eventually be caught another interesting fact about shoplifters is that more than half are women they tend to steal costume jewelry cosmetics and clothing individually these items are not costly but multiplied hundreds of times over again they represent a staggering loss to retail stores when I did it I I didn't think that it would matter to anybody I I really didn't think that it would cost the store or anything because what would they notice they have so many things to worry about besides somebody like me taking things I always had a nice home and everything I wanted and everything I needed at home when I was younger and I used to take things small things I never got caught I never really even thought about it the unfortunate thing about many shoplifters is that they have enough money to pay for what they steal after they are caught the price they pay is considerably more I always had everything I wanted I when I wanted money my parents would give it to me or are clothes they took care of me it was a fun thing to do at the moment it was like on impulse it was something a lark maybe excitement around Heaven it was kind of fun to me at the time I never really thought about being caught for it law enforcement treats shoplifting as one of the most serious crimes it has to come back first time offenders are no longer warned if you are caught you are going to be arrested and when you are arrested they will give you no special treatment for merely being a shoplifter or a juvenile s to law enforcement you are a thief and a common criminal it was uh the most humiliating experience I could ever possibly imagine all having people look at me my mother's friend was in the store at the time and she saw it and I was guilty there was nothing I could say I [Music] think there's no other one when the police came that's when I really realized that I really was in trouble before that I thought well maybe they'll let me go [Music] foreign [Music] hello hello Mr Benton this is a police department your daughter Kathy has been arrested for shoplifting my parents couldn't believe that I would do something like that because I I never needed to do that okay in one sec foreign your middle name oh well crap sorry um I'll try to fix that uh in the meantime in the meantime hi I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where uh we watch old 16 millimeter films when our scanner decides to work um it could be that I haven't used it in a couple of days and it's got It's got like all sore and whatever or ate a bunch of food yesterday uh who knows anyways uh I'm back in the archive today because uh I gave my assistants uh these last two days off and so I was like I can go in um so if I have covid I'm not going to spread it to anybody uh and so far I haven't tested positive for covid but I had a pretty significant close exposure and I'm so I'm kind of waiting counting the days uh which is fine because I don't want to go out anywhere right now because it is today's crazy day uh and so we're watching films about shopping uh kind of so uh this next film I've shown before but I showed like two years ago uh this is only losers play enjoy [Music] if you think shoplifting is a kids game you'd better think again anytime someone takes something from a store without paying for it they've committed a crime and no matter what age the person is or how big or small the item's stolen that person will be treated as a thief [Music] oh come on girl don't be a chicken I'm not a chicken I just don't want it oh yeah sure you're just scared little all scaredy pants are afraid to take some candy big deal nobody will miss it nobody will care besides it's just some candy well it feels so cool why would you take it I've done it lots of times look we'll both take some if you're too scared to do something this easy you ought to go play with the little kids or go home and cry to your mother here [Music] [Music] foreign he made me do it honest hey look it was just some candy please don't call my parents please please uh is this Mrs Williams yes uh ma'am do you have a son named Carl Allen Williams yes ma'am well I'm with store security and we've just apprehended your son with his friend for shoplifting and I'm afraid you're going to have to come down here oh come on Carl don't be a chicken boy things sure are different since Kathy moved away we sure did a lot together good old Kathy she sure knew how to have fun oh well Kelso had to think of something else to do maybe I could buy something really neat like these bracelets get one for Kathy too but they're too expensive they're really small though I bet yeah no one will notice I can just slip them into my pocket Nobody's around this is easy I won't get caught if I just walk out of the store [Music] foreign [Music] Mr Edwards yes I am I am I took these bracelets without paying Foreman I'll be glad to give them back or or give you your money back I just I'm so disappointed in my daughter Mr Edwards she's never done anything like this before I'm so sorry I'll never do it again well I certainly hope not young lady normally it's a policy to turn shoplifters over to the police but since you did come in on your own and you seem to realize the seriousness of your act I guess I can work with you this time I'm so sorry I'll I didn't I just wasn't thinking a lot of people think that taking something from a store isn't a big crime because what they take won't be missed that's just not true I had to pay for these bracelets no one gave me this merchandise I had to pay for everything in here yes sir now you took something that belonged to me what if I took your ring what yes I'd be pretty upset you remember that the next time you're tempted to take something without paying for it there won't be a next time I won't get caught if I just walk out of the store Brad I've been through this with you before you just don't seem to learn we give you a big enough allowance so you can buy the special things you want but Dad no buts Brad I'm not giving you the extra money to buy that game if you'd saved your allowance instead of spinning it the minute you got it then you would have the money to buy the game it's all part of growing up son learning that sometimes you have to do without because you're saving your money for more important things if you really want that game Brad then you'll start saving your money thanks a lot Dad if it was Sally you give her the money that's just not true Brad your sister gets allowance the same as you do but she knows how to manage her money and we expect you to learn the same sure Dad okay I can handle it just try harder Brad I don't need the money I'll just take it and no no no [Music] [Music] Brad I've never been more disappointed in you in my life wait till your mother finds out this will break her heart we both had more faith than you how could you do this to yourself and us I thought you knew better instead of saving your allowance you thought you could take the easy way out and just steal what you wanted well listen Mister you will pay for this action you're grounded for the next month and you'll earn every penny of your allowance by staying home and working around the house [Music] I'll just take it take it oh wow I've been wanting one of these for a long time it'd be perfect for my collection oh well I can't buy it today I don't have enough money guess I'll put it back but it's the only one left what if someone else buys it before I get the money there may not be any more what if just this time I I take it I've never done anything like that before but this time is special I know I wouldn't do it again and and no one is even around to see me nobody will find out [Music] did you hear about Lisa yeah she got caught stealing from a store boy did she get in a lot of trouble what did you see him it was only a glass animal she could have gotten the money for it why did she steal it who knows she probably likes to steal things boy that's what I'm gonna watch my stuff when she's around you and everyone else the whole school knows about it some kids are calling her Lisa the Steeler gosh I would have never thought bad about her nobody will find out [Music] before you decide to shoplift remember this shoplifting is not a kids game shoplifting is a serious crime it's your decision and it's you who have to live with the guilt and the consequences good friend Walter J Klein um wait a minute oh sorry oh I was kidding the next film ready on the scanner uh uh anyways Walter J Klein of course based in Charlotte North Carolina so it's possible that that little twang uh Southern Twang and the kids voices uh was um because they were based in North Carolina that might have been shot in Charlotte I didn't get a chance to really look I don't think they showed exteriors but um yeah so he would shoot these films for a distribution uh on television and in schools and would get people to sponsor it and I think that this was actually sponsored by that um that organization so this next film uh that I got set up here actually had program notes called cot it says please return this guide sheet with film and uh it's prepared by the national retails Merchant Association and has questions the aim of this film is to stop shoplifting by teenagers and adults this guide is divided into two major sections one for preliminary discussion before the movie to the showing of the film The three discussions after showing the film this first major section is divided into three parts the second section is a guide for parents so uh I'm not gonna ask you all these questions but uh anyways yeah so today we're watching films about shoplifting uh and uh let me change the text on this sorry that I wasn't able to show that other film in its entirety I'm gonna have to figure that out um it I think that it was some tension some friction of the film Against The Reel and so this is caught enjoy Linda let's get out of here just walk out very carefully I'm with store security I'd like to talk to you about the blouse come back into the store with me please [Music] ladies and gentlemen here's the star of our show Joe Dolan [Applause] [Music] very very much thank you gentlemen welcome to those of you in our studio audience and welcome to you at home tonight we have a departure from my customary style of programming ordinarily with people from Show Business the entertainment world people from the field of philosophy and political punditry but tonight we're going to focus in on shoplifting shoplifting is a three and one half billion dollar a year crime a combination of shoplifting and general retail thievery this is a grain on our economy and of course you know who pays the bill you do I do all of us do but I don't want to put this in just crass commercial terms I want you to think of it in terms of blighted lives both young and old those who are caught shoplifting now oddly enough despite the magnitude of this crime most of us are unaware of the financial and social consequences of this largest of recorded crimes and that's what it is the largest of recorded crimes now to explore this staggering social phenomenon we are fortunate to have you in our studio tonight you'll be meeting them in the flesh in just a moment three other countries foremost security agents in this field of shoplifting and store security they are Miss Kim Delaney and she's a retail security agent one of the largest retail store chains and sitting on my right will be Mr F Richard McLaughlin he's the executive director of the International Security conference and we also have and this is a special privilege an undercover policewoman now we must preserve this ladies identity we shall simply call her Sergeant Kelly so I'm going to ask your Indulgence for just a few moments while we dim the lights to preserve the lady's anonymity we'll bring our guests forward and we'll be on with the show lights if you will please thank you and we'll return in just a moment and I was now once again here's Joe [Music] [Applause] the most sincere welcome to Miss Kim Delaney Mr efforts of McLaughlin and to you lady Anonymous Sergeant Kelly Sergeant Kelly that's a perfect opening for me who does the shoplifting could you give us some sort of a rundown or a sketch of the folks who do this you can't tell a shoplifter by appearance the shoplifter could be a sweet little grandmother type it could be a teenager could be a executive type no Shady characteristics the upturn call or anything like that not necessarily Joe the uh the majority of Shopper things right now are my teenagers that's the department right over there yeah there it is [Music] [Music] hey this is it oh here they are the ones that were outside on the model like it oh Mom yeah hey why don't you try these pants though it looks really good hey it looks pretty neat but I don't know I think for fall I think this looks really great yeah that looks good too yeah I think I could try that uh vest on with it sure it all comes together [Music] Justin's back here okay wait I'll come with you Mom let's try on the other one that's out there no no honey let's take this one I don't want to get another set this is plenty oh I got to go to Jenny's birthday party next week and I won't have anything to wear oh come on you got plenty of clothes oh I learned about this outfit we got Bonnie uh 10 minutes then we gotta get back to school oh I'm just gonna have this blouse too much yeah right too much money I I'm gonna take it I'm going to take a word out into my own clothes oh man man you can't oh Bonnie everybody does it it's nothing they didn't keep track of what we brought in here get me wrong oh I wish you wouldn't I'm scared honestly it doesn't hurt anybody this door won't miss it here not only with the buttons on the sleeves [Applause] Linda let's get out of here just walk out really casually thank you this flower one girl had three garments and the other one had two blouses and one skirt and here's the empty hanger all right one blouse teen blouses number 41 room repeat number 41 room two through shipping main entrance main entrance I'm with store security come back into the store with me please unbelievable a teenager should do the bulk of the shoplifting and that lead just since you tell me that they have no special characteristics and cannot be picked out especially how do you catch these folks if they're so nondescript well basically there are two ways to do it the first is by visual observation by people story detectives and store employees and so forth secondly and being used much more extensively in recent years is the mechanical electronic devices that are used these devices are many of them are offshoots of the Aerospace industry development and we have laser beams two-way radios closed circuit television we have the weight sensors and now they're using one of the latest devices is a sensor that is attached to the merchandise itself as a merchandise is moved through the store if it has not been purchased it goes through an electronic field without being too technical how does the electronic field actually work well a device that will not be seen by anyone is hidden in the Garment can be hidden in the cloth it can be hidden on a price ticket be hidden anywhere so it can't be seen by by the shoplifter [Music] um now if they make a legitimate purchase the sales person will remove this device if they don't make a purchase the alarm is relayed and the person of course is picked up well all of you are in the field of merchandising and you're familiar with department stores and so on uh with all of the seductive bedazzling uh beguilements that they have to make people buy to get people to buy with self-service off an old corners of a store isn't this not an encouragement I don't misconstrue me but doesn't it make it easy for shoplifters yes that's what is sometimes termed as the irresistible syndrome stores have done everything to make their Wares irresistible and some people can't resist stealing them but of course retailing is the business of presenting Wares merchandising and ultimately selling them so stores have had to incorporate other little things within their dazzling displays in other words what you're telling us there's a snake in the Garden of Eden as a detection device oftentimes in there yes there's a full arse note let's see starting with mirrors there's they've designed a variety of different types of mirrors to enable store personnel to observe the activities of their Shoppers or specifically would-be shoplifters okay Mr Laney I find that uh hard to give Credence to because I when you mentioned mirrors I think of those conspicuous things in the corner of the local hardware store or the drugstore there's great big things up on the corner they're so painfully obvious they're not going to fool anybody or deter anybody sure that's uh that's the fisheye mirror good name for it uh actually it serves a dual purpose it extends the visual area that a security people and the store employees can see for instance into L-shaped alcoves blind spots it allows them to see if there is a potential customer in there that's not attended they can give them better service at the same time we could always deterrent for shoplifters because they know that they can be seen and by seeing the mirror there they know that they're being watched now there's another type of mirror that's used rather extensively and that's the two-way mirror it's not as obvious and yet any full-length mirror on the selling floor and the fitting rooms anywhere could hide a security agent who is behind observing all of the activities of the shoplift which is your favorite smell my dear what is your favorite smell I like the smell of the Lilac and Rose I like the smell of spring in my nose I like the smell of the sand and the thief summertime smells are the best ones for me I like the smell of the leaves in the pot I like to jump and the power that's just Tom the smell of hot chocolate on a cold Winter's day the perfume of Mommy when we kiss him good night the powder at bath time that makes us look right Mrs Phillips Mrs Phillips Department four handbags green skirt blue shoes okay we might now that means help for our home is just trying all right let's go pardon me ma'am I'm with store security yeah I'd like to speak to you in my office please what about about the belt I don't know what you mean we've been observing you mirror mirror on the wall revealed the biggest crook of all now that gives you professionals then an opportunity of using mirrors instead of just to see your ugly visages or your physiogamies you've got a chance to catch people pilfering merchandisers at it that's it Joe and with the increase in shoplifting it's becoming necessity uh Mr Lanier you're supposed to be a floor detector is there any resemblance between a floor detective and what used to be called a floor Walker with a carnation there's buttonholes no not really I watch those Shoppers who are suspect experts say well people want something for nothing well it's my job to see if they don't get it all right I want you to reveal any professional tricks or give anybody any ideas but just how do you watch them well there's various ways [Music] like in one of our stores there are 50 of us for detectives generally assigned to mingle with the Shoppers throughout the store [Music] we're observant but casual in our customer surveillance during busy hours sales and holiday rushes several of us may be planted in specific departments where there could be theft problems and you never know security agents could be salesmen cashiers are even a model where expensive merchandise is displayed we're extremely watchful because one loss here could amount to hundreds of thefts elsewhere in the store we are deputized to make on-the-spot arrest still our aim whenever possible is to discourage shoplifting foreign so if we see somebody acting really suspicious and may be tempted to make a lift our approach is very blunt and direct do you need assistance sir are you following me why should I be now Sergeant Kelly we often think in this in terms of shoplifting and stealing and pilfing and so on are the kleptomaniac you know from the Grade B movie stealing everything in sight are they a large factor in this pilfering not a large Factor Joe but it is a factor there is such a thing as a kleptomaniac a very pathetic but real person better video tape this one foreign Delaney number 55. Delaney Appliance Department jewelry female blue sweater white pants glasses okay on the way foreign haven't you forgotten something oh I know I don't believe so what do you mean you took an article of jewelry and didn't pay for it isn't that correct no it is not your witness taking it would you take it out of your pocket please I have nothing in my pocket Miss I will have to detain you I'm authorized to make an arrest now wouldn't it be better if you've cooperated bring it over to the monitor cue the tape Dave this monitor will replay the video recording of Your Action foreign foreign motion detection alarm elements department store 568 covered alley only for cover to the main and South entrances oh hands up well it's plain to be seen in that the department stores the merchants police juvenile authorities are all deeply concerned about this matter and they've obviously marshaled every Technical and legal and scientific resource in this battle against a three and a half billion dollar loss that's an awful lot of money at least that's what I've read that's right Joe well Sergeant Kelly just brings the ball right back to you our more shoplift is being caught absolutely and the teenager fails to realize that Moore being prosecuted well Sergeant Kelly uh what baffles me is if you catch them and you prosecute them and you put them in jail and you give them prison stripes and so on that doesn't seem to me to be the solution of the problem it isn't the solution of the problem there has to be a close relationship with the parent and the child the parent has to have a close relationship with the school the parent has to be aware that this child could be shoplifting knowing how much clothing that child has in wardrobe knowing that when she goes he or she goes shopping that they're buying that particular item that they set out to buy and they're paying the price for it now these schools working with the parents the Chamber of Commerce and exchange clubs are all trying to bring an educational program to the parent Kelly you're kind of putting a parent on the hook and I I feel at the Juvenile himself that is the teenager the youth must bear some of the responsibility he sees films and television and so on isn't he afraid of being caught not necessarily the teenager doesn't usually look that far ahead or understand realize what the consequence can be of getting a shoplifting arrest what it's going to do to his reputation what it can do to his future to deplorable situation I know that's a piece of boilerplate but what else can anybody say dick can I turn profound and philosophical for a moment certainly uh is there a breakdown in the nation's moral code this epidemic of shoplifting is this a change I think very definitely there is Joe there's been a a great change take place in the last 20 years for for 2000 years we've built up an assessed set of morals and we've lived by them and in the last 20 years they've grown up in smoke and the young people today are in the limbo between last 2000 years and the new set that has not yet been formulated they don't know exactly what to do part of this is brought on I think by the population explosion uh the large stores the giant complexes of retail industry in the old days as you recall when you went into a candy store or a small department store was mama papa operated if you stole a tie or you stole the sweater you knew exactly who was losing because it was the guy who owned the store hey the young people rationalized that nobody really owns the store what they steal doesn't hurt anybody doesn't hurt any individual and consequently there's nothing wrong with it well we all know that this is not so the losses we're all paying as consumers as as people who are paying the price however there are many attitudes towards shoplifting let me give you an example of just one a young lady who found a new lease in life on her regular shopping tours on her lunch hour this is a story I was telling you about earlier oh yes we should share those gory details in our audience this is the one that founded a form of recreation or something yes that's how far we've gotten the stealing is now a form of recreation my job routine used to be a boar travel to work put in my time travel home but now I love my job because it's made me look forward to lunch hour what can I lift today yep that's what I asked myself on the way to work in the morning and before I know it the Trip's over then I never noticed a trip home too busy gloating over my lunchtime haul I honestly believe I've developed 360 degree Century perception I can feel if I'm being watched if I get bad signals I play it straight there isn't much that won't go in a purse it seems silly now to pay for everything when this is so easy there's an aesthetic about this I always finish up by taking a luxury item caviar macadamia nuts it's like an artist who puts his signature to a painting that he's proud of so now I have a craft more rewarding in many ways than my job it gives me something to look forward to you could say it makes my day a combination of old-fashioned greed and adventurous Spirit that's a true story by the way Joe well dick I'll take your word for it and it's the most disheartening recital I can only hope that the girl received a professional treatment in corrected her ways Sergeant Kelly here is the nitty-gritty of the matter what are the consequences to these teenagers if they're caught shoplifting Joe it's very serious this is the sad part is they think it could never happen to them it's always going to happen to somebody else thank you foreign yes this is learner's department store calling I'm sorry to tell you that we've just apprehended your daughter Linda shoplifting yes there's no mistake ma'am yes I'm sure [Applause] medium height brown eyes brunette it's your daughter Mrs Finn it's required that you come down to the store may we expect you thank you just ask for Mr Thomas could you explain to me why you attempted to take that blouse I well it seems so easy it didn't seem like stealing well does it seem that way now Linda had you been successful in stealing that blouse how would you explain it to your parents I really didn't think about it you made a common error Linda but shoplifting is theft and in legal terms ranges anywhere from petty larceny to grand larceny now nobody here believes that you're a hardened Criminal but unfortunately this is a police matter and it's a matter of record for you now I must tell you that there's a police officer waiting to take you the juvenile authorities and one more thing your mother is outside waiting for you [Music] thank you thank you [Music] foreign [Music] you are before this court on an admission of shoplifting is that right yes sir Linda shoplifting is a very serious crime and have no doubt it is a crime theft of this sort has grown to alarming proportions and this court has grown impatient it will not view this kind of charge sympathetically somehow the wrong you do in taking others property must be impressed upon you and your peers whether you take from an individual a store or a giant Corporation it is morally wrong and you cause others all of us even your friends to pay for your misdeed this cost to the public is just too great to allow material greediness or when to go unpunished Linda Fenton you are to be placed on probation for a period of eight months during this time you are not to enter a department store of any kind unless accompanied by an adult you will report regularly to a probation officer and that official will periodically um so I'm going to move this over and I'm going to load a film while I'm talking to you uh basically uh the idea of me doing this show was a very spur of the moment thing I actually had another show pre-recorded that I was going to show you but I decided that I was getting a little stir crazy and really wanted to do a show live so there we go all right pop this off normally I have to wind it back on the scanner but uh it'll take too long it'll be too noisy so last film and this is one according to my notes I haven't shown it but I feel like I have shown it um but we're gonna watch it anyways because it is so good [Music] so writing this up take the gate out and kind of clear it off while you're not really seeing this so this gate right here 16 millimeter gate kind of get the schlutz off the light source and then I thread it's very different than the 3D avatar that I had running yesterday right all right then I tape down the end here this film is also called cot this is uh caught in a rip-off um and it is pretty awesome so enjoy caught enjoy caught in a rip-off well if you want to get a wee bit of hers we're already late okay you know something I think I am gonna get some hold on okay you know I don't even think there's any here oh just a minute Domino cam I can't see anybody I'm not gonna give you a lot of crap I mean if you want a sermon catch Billy Graham on the two [Music] clipping goes on so what sometimes it's not even planned it just happens and it's as much the store's fault as it is ours I mean if they want you to wait on them it ought to be worth something [Music] or like there's some things that have a certain amount of class and you think you might like to have one and you look and it's like nine prices so either way it's a rip either they get you or you get thin [Music] [Music] I don't think I couldn't care less what it'll do to your folks when they fight no so she's looking the other way chances are they're up to the same thing either on their income expense accounts that's what happened I'm not going to give you any of that righteous crap because it's not that big a deal [Music] actually there's only one real advantage to a rip-off and that's getting stuff for free a can of spray paint measly can of spray paint that's what I got for free well just about that's what I'm getting to those snooper mirrors are really a laugh they're mainly there to psych you out if they can see you then you can see them and act accordingly I'm not so stupid that I don't know when I'm being watched like the flunkies on the store payroll you'd really have to be out of it not to consider every customer in the store as a plan or the clerks spying on you is what they get paid for you're certainly not going to find one that will help you find what you want obviously they don't get paid well enough otherwise there wouldn't be so many rip-offs that turn out so well from our standpoint yes sir free enterprise you've got to give the merch some credit they get together in associations and have lists of the people they think are getting to them or they've developed profiles for how a shoplifter acts you might be surprised at how well they've got us picked I'm not going to tell you exactly what it is that alerts them because well I said no crap so no crap I don't know but they do have codes bathroom open register one please George bathroom George bathroom a bathroom you never can tell what the code will be it might not always be a call for a check or a certain checkout stand it might just be a break in the music or a light blinking you never can tell and uh something else I didn't know you can literally see right through the wall or if they don't spot you that way they've got some other scheme going man there is nothing fair about it [Music] I'm telling you this so that if you're just into it for the game you'll realize how many players there are and you won't sell your opponents short foreign [Music] will there be anything else [Music] now they've got you I mean legally don't be expected to know that if you go through the checkout stand and they ask you if there's anything else and you say no then that's concealing with intent to divert to your own use and that's stealing according to them even if it's just a little harmless Penny anty stuff thank you you bet [Music] hair stands up on the back of your neck you get an empty feeling in the pit of your stomach you know they know they're gonna let you get out of the store and then they're gonna NAB you if you let them if you don't play it very cool oh oh wait I think there was something else I wanted excuse me I'll be with you in just a moment are they waiting to NAB me or aren't they boy you can feel the sweats start popping out okay [Music] geez they are under something gotta get myself together slow and easy just walk back through the night section and put it back it's not a rip-off if you haven't got anything on that's what you think how did I get into this hey wait a minute maybe there's a way out can I pay you for this I forgot I had it would you like to come to the office and talk about this uh unpaid merchandise there's nothing to talk about I meant to pay for it no no wait a minute this thing is they won't let you pay it's weird I mean I just forgot everybody thinks that yeah all you have to do is pop up with the money if you get caught I mean who hasn't figured that and that shows what you're up against once you pass the checkout counter they don't have to wait until you're out of the store when you came in here for it we're here I got it here trying to get him over there at the door what's going on I think they caught a shot blister these car keys you won't get far good foreign [Music] then there's no question [Music] a dead giveaway [Music] [Music] foreign like a nightmare [Music] like a nightmare that's happening to somebody else only you know it's you that's you running [Music] oh my keys what do I do with my damn keys look I'm sorry man I I don't know what got into me I just never done anything like that before come on let's you can be telling the truth and it's like he didn't hear you I'm really sorry look you can't believe how many times I've heard that story ever you're not another human being with feelings or somebody's son or daughter that they're proud of or somebody with a great future whatever it is you know that you are you're just the same old story he's heard a million times you can't phase them you can't make them understand that this is important to you this is your future look uh can't we just forget about this I mean I know I made a mistake and I deserve to squirm a little bit but do you have to crucify me please why don't you have a seat I'm sorry I have no choice my bosses I have got to put a stop to shoplifting or I'm out of a job unless the percentage of shrinkage goes down and most shrinkage is shoplifting I'm not going to be working here any longer no matter how sorry I might feel for the ones who are involved oh give me the police would you please I'm sure you know the number okay if I can hang on to my job I'd like to get paid in line with my efforts now my pay is based on whether this place makes any money or not so anybody that takes a dime's worth of stuff off those counters down there is really taking money out of my pocket I know shoplifter never stops to think everybody has to pay higher prices to cover the cost of what he gets away with I've had pretty little teenage girls sitting right there and pillars of the community grandmotherly types and they all say it isn't hurting anybody well it hurts me ready on your call Mr Powers Sergeant Duncan's on the line you can't help yourself [Music] let's just torn out of you it's the deepest hurtness feeling you've ever felt [Music] trust me heart fear ful part disgust with yourself [Music] in part Maybe which is called grief grief for who you thought you were [Music] you probably won't get a chance to be now like some of you have died and this is the funeral and that's all I'm trying to get across to you what it feels like to be ashamed there are other humiliations being looked at like you were something rotten having to sweat out a long long wait okay [Music] thank you foreign Lawrence Police Department I'd like to ask you some questions but first i'm required to it's you that you're going to have a record to follow you around have the right but I'm not going to harp on all that crap do you understand each of these rights all I'm trying to get across is what it does to you [Music] the way you get hurt when you're caught in the rip off Mark you are hereby son is on the eighth day of April at eight o'clock AM to answer a complaint charging you with shoplifting if you fail to appear a warrant will be issued for your arrest or anything okay [Music] hey get down from there now [Music] hey turn it off [Music] what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mincemeat by now what have I told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well I told him not to touch anything all right I guess I wasn't thinking y'all weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety hair shake hands with Danger shake hands with danger meet a manual to know I used to laugh at safety now they call me three fingers [Music] I was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my toolbox and I'll take myself a look I climbed up on a Dozier with my mechanic's Pride said if you can keep it running friend while I poke around inside [Music] although I learned a lesson I forgot it soon enough the Nixon Burns and scratches showed the young ones I was tough till another morning I was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me [Music] I've seen mechanics burning I've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute I've seen them lose it all I've watched them caught in trouble seeing them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the Blues [Music] [Applause] [Music] around my own mind [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends I Used to Know compared to them I'm lucky to be just a three-finger Joe [Music] [Laughter] all right so why did I show that shake hands with danger remix after I showed caught in a rip-off uh so the red-haired uh guy narrator uh our main character who steals a tiny can of like testers paint um is Jim Stringer the man who actually composed the song shake hands with danger um this is uh and he also wrote the music for uh caught in a ripoff and wrote music for a lot of the uh late 70s early 80s uh Centron films um and so yeah I talked to him we did a show this is a long time ago um where I showed a bunch of films that he uh had done and including this one and he said uh during the film he said that basically he they showed this and his young daughter was in the audience and started crying when she saw her daddy on the big screen getting arrested um getting chased um and so he had to do a lot of explaining afterwards to calm her down um so anyways yeah uh thanks for tuning in today I'm happy I came in and uh showed you some film sorry about that one shoplifting film but uh we got to watch some Choice ones uh and um yeah so I'll be back again on Monday I hope that
