is for that that for that that hello hi everybody I am skip Alzheimer and welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and um that was uh some home movies of uh some rich people who had horses um I think there's a there's a tiar of people who shot home movies uh that were rich and then there's an higher tier of people who had horses and showed them off and competed with them and all that um so that's what that was um the next tier up of course is I I remember uh scanning some 35 mimer home movies and you want to talk about rich people uh and it was basically it was a yacht race and it was like a giant yacht it was huge like it was um had sails and you know it was kind of like a precursor to the American Cup or Australian cup or whatever that uh thing is where you know you have these giant ships with sails and you have a team and and all that stuff anyhow uh I'm back from a week in Tulsa Oklahoma and I thought I could maybe periodically kind of check in and say hi but I it was a busy time uh basically uh it was uh aia's um conference which Amia is the association of moving image archists so it's my people and uh we did I did a whole day where we were training on how to use 60mm projectors to a new archist who haven't had any experience uh then uh I did a presentation about uh some other film projects that I'm working on and then uh did a presentation about the work that we did at Apple shop so it was a lot and a lot of people and so I hope you don't mind that I pre-recorded everything and it seems like in the comments there's a a little bit of psychic damage uh related to Cool Whip um sometimes I like to do a deep dive on Fridays and show you a bunch of advertising that we did for the uh Duke adws project um and uh Cool Whip man uh as a kid I loved it and then uh when I did the project digitizing coip I I realized how much I hated Mrs Tucker and the the the scam that she was perpetuating on her uh Airbnb um guests by making this delicious um Strawberry Shortcake and then just putting chemicals whipped chemicals on top um so uh sorry not sorry for showing you all that cool whip but um it's interesting like if you spend time watching a whole bunch of those commercials and these other things kind of Bounce out of your head and um and one of them was my my how angry I was at Mrs Tucker all right uh so let's get back into some cornet um Mark your meaning enjoy [Music] one day not long ago our school received an interesting collection of stories from the boys and girls of a South American country the book was written and illustrated by these South American pupils who are in the same grade we are they wanted to help show us in the United States what their South American school life was like we all agreed that to thank them we should write a collection of stories to send to them the class elected two editors and everyone helped write and illustrate the stories so we'd have a book that would tell our new friends about us and our activities George had his idea ready to submit to the editors Beth and Tom who were selecting the best material for the book George could draw and paint as well as anyone in the class and he had worked hard on the first page of his picture story but something seemed to be wrong the story didn't make sense to Beth Tom couldn't understand it either the picture was fine and the introduction was fairly clear here we have a puppet theater at our school which has been a source of enjoyment to our whole class we think it is a wonderful theater this is just the first scene of one of the plays we have produced Johnny and Mary met in the middle of the gloomy stage Johnny sat down on a Mossy stump in the Enchanted Forest Mary said Johnny what on Earth are you thinking it just doesn't make sense maybe George's picture story won't be selected for the book but Tom saw that the trouble was punctuation punctuation marks help us tell what we mean when we write Johnny and Mary met each other that much is certain then in the middle of the gloomy stage Johnny sat down that doesn't sound right why would he sit on the ground Tom realized they couldn't select that story to be written up for the book George was really worried now uhoh Beth suggested that George should punctuate his story so it said what he meant to say it was up to George what's wrong everything we can't tell what you mean there's no punctuation well you're the editors you put the pun situation in yeah but we don't know where the marks belong look here's what I mean now this is just one way to punctuated Johnny and Mary met period in the middle of the gloomy stage Johnny sat down period no no no that's all wrong that's not what I mean Johnny sat on a Mossy stump all right only you know what you want to say we don't and another thing what do you mean here if we put a comma here it will mean Mary said Johnny what on Earth are you thinking but if we put the comma here it will mean Mary said Johnny what on Earth are you thinking you really need punctuation marks we won't know whether Johnny spoke to Mary Mary spoke to Johnny yes I guess so I'll try to tell you what I I mean and you help me put in the right punctuation all right well let's start at the beginning so they began to punctuate this first page of George's story we have a puppet theater at our school which has been a source of enjoyment to our whole class period now that period completes an idea and ends that sentence so we need a capital letter to start the next sentence we think it is a wonderful theater well that certainly sounds flat and uninteresting we need a punctuation mark to help us understand that you feel it is wonderful there that exclamation mark tells anyone we think it is a wonderful theater again we need a capital letter to start the next sentence this is just the first scene of one of the plays we have produced often we can think of the words and sentences we use as creating pictures or images in the minds of our listeners and we need punctuation marks to help us create exactly the picture we mean Johnny and Mary met in the middle of wait a minute Johnny and Mary are proper names they must begin with capital letters I see Johnny and Mary met in the middle of the gloomy stage is that the end of the sentence yes then you need a period to show that these words belong together then Johnny starts a new sentence a new idea and it's a proper name besides so we capitalize it for two reasons Johnny sat down on a Mossy stump in the Enchanted Forest I need a period after Forest to show that all those words belong together in one idea and Mary starts a new sentence so that word must be capitalized even if it were not a proper name now Mary's said Johnny what on Earth are you thinking oh it's Johnny who speaks first to Mary sure but I don't know how to do it it's really not hard if you think it out carefully first put quotation marks at the start of what Johnny says and another set of marks at the end of what he says to show clearly where he begins and where he stopped speaking naturally Johnny did not say said Johnny so we used commas and quotation marks to separate these words from what Johnny actually said but Johnny asked the question didn't he so we need to show in the written Story how Johnny's voice sounded asking that question that does it and there is George's punctuation problem solved now his meaning is clear to every careful reader we have a puppet theater at our school which which has been a source of enjoyment to our whole Enchanted Forest Mary said Johnny what on Earth are you thinking so George went back to retype his or to include all the punctuation marks needed to tell the reader what he really meant meanwhile Tom and Beth were getting some simple rules ready to help George and all the other pupils punctuate their stories because they wanted the stories for the South American book to be easily read when George had retyped his first page with all the punctuation marks needed to help tell what he meant the editors were pleased and agreed to accept it if he would do the rest of it as well to help George and the rest of us here are some questions to ask yourself whenever you write a story or a letter did I capitalize the first word of each sentence remember in the story the sentence we think it is a wonderful theater did I capitalize every proper name for example Mary and Johnny did I end each sentence with a period question mark or exclamation point did I use quotation marks and commas to show clearly who said what and remember to read your story aloud it sometimes helps you to know where to place the punctuation marks and of course you also can get help from your English textbook Tom has an idea if everyone who writes would think about three simple rules the stories would be more easily understood by the boys and girls in South America here are Tom's rules punctuation marks tell which words belong together announce questions and exclamations show exactly what person say these rules of punctuation will help all of us communicate our ideas whenever we write Mark your meaning so that your meaning is truly [Music] clear sneak some uh marionettes in there creep everybody out um so behind me I have a uh film scanner set up and I have a film that I pulled that I got a long time ago and uh have not watched or shown this is what's so great about this I mean so what happens is I end up getting hundreds if not thousands of films at a time I tried to get them catalog tried to put them where they are and then some of them especially if they have compelling titles I'll like watch them uh but sometimes I I don't and these films actually came from somebody who lived close to where I grew up in Locust North Carolina which is outside of uh it's about 45 minutes from Charlotte and so he was excuse me a filmmaker uh cinematographer rer and then collector and he ended up collecting a lot of cameras and projectors and things but also would get these batches of films so he had a bunch of 35mm films and he had a bunch of 16mm films that he got from uh Georgia uh State schools and um they were in transferred trailers they were in like giant truck trailers like outside and so to get them he was like here's you can have these I was like great so I had to like shimmy up into this trailer and pull out stuff and I would there was of course a leak in the roof so I'd pick up a a um can and water would just pour out of it or I'd pick up a can and it would be obvious that there was a wasp nest in it um so some of them I had to pass on obviously but every single film I picked up I kind of shook just to see if anything would come out of it um and so this is uh one of those films all right so here is an American Museum uh where is the thing oh it's down here [Music] enjoy [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] come [Music] a new work of art in a building full of art the question does it Merit EX exhbition among the Thousand art objects of the City Art Museum of St Louis the director will make the basic decision but his decision will be influenced by the opinion of others the curator and the assistant director are authorities in their respective fields of art but they must also be historians of all art 8 pounds of cast copper it may be looked at for 6 months before a decision is reached to buy it or to let it pass is there no room for this sculpture in this huge assemblage of objects is there no room beside Carl Millis folk Phil biter is there no room near the Chinese buddhistic Steely or the rembrand or the Hine or the de or the van go it is a small object certainly there is space beside the Madonna and child perhaps there is space but not necessarily room a great museum finds room only for the art representing the absolute best in its particular field to determine its value as a piece of art every object must be established in its historical [Music] perspective authenticity is one Criterion but only one for a museum which has collected the art of the world for the past 50 years but while the museum staff Works to improve its collection the daily routine of serving the community begins with the morning's first [Music] [Applause] visitors [Applause] to every school child within driving distance of the museum the museum has become an important part of his education 30,000 schools children from 360 schools visit the galleries every year the school can teach a child about other people and other times but only a museum can show the child the real object of the real past art is the mirror of [Music] History within the frame is reflected the pageant of our past the history of man is written in art each century and every people have left their visual [Music] statement the religions of man have never been so thoroughly documented as it has in sculpture and in painting nowhere else can we see our faith as others saw it three centuries ago for a school child the museum communicates a new dimension in learning something apart from his textbooks for the adult the Museum represents other experiences for the adult the museum becomes a place to discover old ideas expressed in new terms the Greeks knew how to dress up a military commander in imposing style and their Greek women too art allows us to see ourselves as others see us art provides a very personal experience for each [Music] person a museum supported by all the people has the obligation to serve all who support it as classifier and Technical guardian of a museum housing over $12 million worth of art the Museum's curator must find time to be art historian to the public what is it does it have value the curator calls upon years of study and experience to establish the origin and the importance of this work most of the objects brought to the museum by citizens of the community are not the best of their kind their sole value is in ownership though they are valuable they are not for the museum a majority of visitors to the curator's office have usually develop their own point of view toward [Music] art that is exactly what it is a broken porcelain vase purchased on the Midway St Louis World's Fair Circa 1904 unfortunately ly a curator must always tell the [Music] truth the family art treasure is not valuable sorry but sometimes the hours devoted to these endless visits brings a reward there is no mistake sometimes but not often the curator finds an unrecognized museum piece though the museum may never see this print again the the responsibility of evaluating the community's possessions worthless and Priceless is one of the jobs of the curator yes is this the Creator speaking well this is the curator of the City Art Museum oh well I'm the president of the local Women's Club and all of the girls are terribly interested in art can I help you in any way could you possibly write us a short note telling us everything that is known about art well have you tried the library between demands from the public outside and the care and cataloging of the art inside the curator must find time to put on the Hat of the Museum's Chief investigator is it authentic is it completely homogeneous or has it been restored if restored does the restoration seriously impair its importance ultraviolet inspection a modern device to determine ancient [Music] authenticity x-ray to reveal today what has been hidden for centuries the infrared gun a device invented 12 years ago to locate Japanese jungle Fighters now used to test an object 2,000 years [Music] old chemical analysis what is the object made of what is its state of preservation the curator is now a chemist and his research must not Overlook a single clue to the object's authenticity nor can the museum afford to overlook the contribution of important art outside its own galleries the creation of temporary or traveling shows is a constant task for the staff of a great museum 6 months will be spent by the assistant director in search of 75 paintings most most representative of American artists during the past 25 years out of this work must come an exhibition representative of the best we can produce for the painting selected here in the library of the City Art Museum of St Louis will represent the United States in the great galleries of the world into the museum the fruition of the past 6 month's work from the collections and exhibitions of the world the art of the world Finds Its way into this [Music] room a constant flow of art enters and leaves the museum after months of research and correspondence the physical task of putting the temporary exhibition together [Music] begins paintings and sculpture for one temporary exhibition may come from a 100 sources 5,000 m away to the lender this painting is priceless the museum has borrowed it free and some somay if asked will lend its art to the lender and so the job of packing and shipping and insuring and inquiring will continue so that the great painting the great sculpture the great art of the world can come to us and our art can go to the [Music] world every exhibition however temper temporary must be built from the ground up and no two exhibitions are alike every exhibition has its own personality it is a talent and a task to hang the new show for a museum constantly facing the problem of gallery space the permanent exhibit must be removed over 20 times a year this takes place 102 paintings of the Museum's permanent collection are removed from exhibition to provide Gallery space for the the new show now the job of constructing the show begins in Earnest 379 art objects to be exhibited in five galleries but only the trained eye can say when it is right [Music] proofs from the show's catalog the culmination of six months work for an exhibition that will last 2 weeks numbers and labels identification for 379 separate pieces of Art opening night for the new exhibit for a museum whose Financial base is derived from taxes of its citizens opening night is not confined to a limited Society opening night is reserved for the friends of the City Art Museum a group representative of all the community these people through their small membership fee have provided the museum with funds to explore and acquire new art private collectors find the Museum invaluable in establishing standards for collecting from this Museum some have have received much and they have given much in return the future of the Museum's collection rests in great part with the financial assistance made possible by the friends of the City Art Museum but the final decision on the acceptance of each new piece of art is made by the board of control a new purchase perhaps memberships donations taxes will be spent the board will have to decide the best old and new must be sought out and paid for that is the price we share for culture in a Democratic [Music] Society to hundreds of children of this community Saturday afternoon means a one M walk from the nearest bus stop to the City Art Museum [Music] on Saturday afternoon the Museum's galleries are busy with a variety of activities every age and every taste finds something here the degree of excitement experienced through ART increases in direct proportion to the amount you know about it and age is not a factor part of the Museum's obligation is to communicate the experience of creativity not that these people will become artists but that the endless struggle of man to express himself will be better understood and life itself will be better understood for 30 years the museum has pioneered in art education this leadership in new methods and ideas has established standards throughout this country and abroad but more important it has attracted young people to the museum week after week on their own [Music] volition for the excitement of what they see here of what they experience is a very personal one to them the museum is an adventure the spontaneous imagination of children the children call this the game there is nothing more fascinating to a 6-year-old child than seeking out objects that were part of life thousands of years [Music] ago under the roof of one building between the walls of 66 galleries seek out one one object in a collection of 8,000 objects this is a lesson in looking a game to teach the eye and the mind that life around you is [Music] exciting [Music] [Music] [Music] she has found it a wonderful experience for a six-year-old [Music] child and for the hundreds of of thousands who will Discover it here in years to come how important among this vastness is one piece of art important only that everything within these galleries Within These cases and on these walls represent the high point of man's accomplishment through all the ages only here can we and our children find and learn to understand these things only here in an American [Music] Museum where am I uh but it is not my f most favorite museum in St Louis not by long shot uh my most favorite museum in St Louis is the city museum which is I think it's like a seven story shoe factory that got converted into a playground by an artist sculptor and it is easily uh one of the most amazing places in North America as far as places to go explore it it totally captures uh what a little kid digs which is the ability to kind of go and discover things and be on the own and everything is Uncharted and also a little dangerous uh there's lots of slides there's if you're afraid of heights it's not necessarily a place to go but uh I have taken my nephew to it when he was old enough and I took uh my wife there and it was phenomenal absolutely phenomenal so I have a question for you and that is how do you recognize insects I really want to know let's find [Music] out look a beetle see if you can catch it in your jar that's it don't let him get away try to get some of them on the tra I'm trying to but they keep crawling off again let's catch it no leave it alone a spider isn't an insect how do you know as you may guess today my class is collecting insects some of the boys and girls are having a little difficulty recognizing these animals Mrs Wilson how can you tell which animals or insects well let's look at one of the ants that Sally has collected the body has three parts one two three and it has two feelers or antenna it also has three pairs of legs any animal that has all of these characteristics is an insect see the two antenna and three pairs of legs on this Beetle yes now I'm turning the beetle over so you can see the body how many parts does it have one two three so the beetle is also an insect now look at the spider how many parts does its body have two yes so is it an insect no no that's right Mrs Wilson look a butterfly I caught it be careful don't tear the wings a butterfly is an insect isn't it Mrs Wilson well Jimmy how many pairs of legs does it have one pair here they're kind of small two pairs three and how many parts to its body one two three what else do all insects have an Tenny remember two antenni three parts to the body and three pairs of legs these are the characteristics of insects then the butterfly is an insect yes look there's a bee there are several of them do you know why they're attracted to the flowers to get nectar and pollen yes look at this one carefully you can see pollen sacks on its legs should we try to catch it Mrs Wilson all right but use the net so you won't get stung now let's see what Billy might sweep up with his net many kinds of insects live in the grass did he catch anything a grasshopper look how long its legs are no wonder it can hop so far let's see where the legs are attached to the body they're attached to the center part called the thorax behind the thorax is the abdomen this is where the food is digested now look at the head you notice how he bites the grass the mouth is made up of many parts the parts are especially adapted for biting and chewing the grasshopper depends on leaves and other parts of plants for food Mrs Wilson there's a lot of insects over by the pond look at that one it's a dragonfly look at its wings you can see right through them and look at the eyes those are the kind Mrs Wilson says are compound eyes there's an insect swimming on the water I think think it's a beetle the kind they call a diving Beetle sure look it's diving under the water it uses its legs like ORS can you see it Mrs Wilson yes I'll catch it in the net We'll add it to our collection look at what I found see it's crawling on my stick but look at all those legs I don't think it's an insect remember an insect only has six legs then what is it let's ask Mrs Wilson you're right boys it's not an insect it's a millipede a distant relative of the insects now look at the grub in this jar this is an insect even though it doesn't look like one now that's because it isn't fully developed this is a young June Beatle at this stage of growth it's called a larvae you've probably seen mosquito larv on the surface of the water we often call them wigglers the larvae of a fly is sometimes called a maggot a caterpillar is a larvae too this one is the larvae of a moth this one is the larvae of a monarch butterfly a butterfly larvae may form a chrysalis the insect inside is now called a pupa the pupa will grow Until It Breaks out of the Chrysalis as an adult Monarch the butterfly we caught is also a monarch like the butterfly most insects go through some kind of change as they grow up so to recognize an insect you have to learn how it looks as an adult or as a larvae or other earlier stage today I'm showing my class how to mount the insects we collected to show in a science fair and they're noticing that some insects look almost alike is this a grasshopper no it's a Katy did I can show you the difference by putting it beside a grasshopper The Grasshoppers and tenny are shorter than the Katy dids the wings of the Katy are higher on its back than the grasshopper wings but they look much the same in other ways yes Cindy the grasshopper and Katie did are similar in many ways they're members of the same insect group other members of this group are the praying mantis the cricket and other insects that look very much like the grasshopper this insect is a member of another group The Beetles see the hard shell like wings these cover another pair of wings underneath thick protective wings like these are found on the May beetle on the ladybird Beetle on the horn beetle and on all other Beetles The Beatles are the largest group of insects flies are another group aren't they how can you tell which insects are flies well see how this fly has just one pair of true wings this is characteristic of all flies the green bottle fly has just two Wings the horse fly has two wings and the musquito it's a fly also two Wings all true flies have just two fully developed wings now let's look at these insects the butterflies and Ms perhaps Steve can tell us what they have in common well they all have four large Wings 1 2 3 4 can you tell us some of the differences well the antenna of the butterfly are thin with knobs on the end the Anton of the moth are feathery without knobs yes that's one difference if you look more carefully I'm sure you can find other differences and similarities similarities and differences are the main clues in recognizing groups of insects each time you see an insect you don't recognize examine it to see how it Compares with other insects you know in this way you can learn many new and interesting things about the largest of all animal groups the [Music] insects those kids were so excited to talk about insects oh my gosh at first they didn't know what to do but everything kind of opened the door opened that this just things that my uh friends who teach school it's that that Epiphany when they it appears in their eyes and they get so excited and you can't shut them up and they're talking about insects um anyways uh I'm happy to be back in Raleigh uh I enjoyed being with my friends and uh peers talking about films and video and all that but I like being home with my wife my cat my films my staff all that stuff and you folks and interacting with you guys so um I'll be back again tomorrow everybody have a great rest of your Monday and we'll we'll talk
