hello hello hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films that my webcam is new one is working today so that's why everything looks a little bit softer a little bit I don't know better who knows um but that last film we saw was from the Mogul Brothers collection called evolution of the earth uh which was probably cobbled together footage from lots of different sources to create that um it's I don't know if Mogul Brothers actually made these compilations or if somebody else did and just repurposed footage and then it was shown in theaters and then it got reduced down to 16. not sure not sure but uh behind me I have to orient myself it's kind of weird um I have a film set up and uh it's not rock and roll safety patrol uh it is called the revealing I so enjoy thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] cancer cells imperceptible to thy revealed an active growth by the camera [Music] [Applause] foreign with a single photograph an instant of time can be isolated and preserved with a series of photographs movement itself can be recorded and analyzed Edward mybridge made this experiment in the 1870s using a battery of 20 cameras the sequence seen in order contained the basic elements of movement another method was to record successive images on a single photographic plate although simpler this had the disadvantage of superimposition to overcome it the French physiologist mare conceived the idea of moving a strip of film between each exposure with this more refined technique he was able to record and study the corrective movements of a cat falling these historic Chrono photographs taken in the early 1890s were part of his research in animal locomotion here the separate images lay side by side but the camera could equally well be turned so that the film moved vertically in this fashion in seeking to perfect an instrument for the scientific analysis of movement mare had hit upon the principle of the motion picture camera this was the Forerunner of this true slow motion filmed by one of Mare's Associates no guess after the invention of cinematography from its earlier days the motion picture camera was brought to bear on things never before observed in detail a ball bouncing on a jet of water was an early high-speed study ballistics demanded higher speeds the action of a pellet piercing a bubble was demonstrated by lucianne bull at 1200 pictures a second in 1905. Krantz took 5 000 pictures a second in 1909. Chardon followed with seventy thousand and filmed the fracture of glass at two hundred thousand pictures a second this last study of a bullet virtually tapping against a glass plate was made in 1940 at more than six million pictures a second movement is slowed down and analyzed time appears to be expanded so that every kind of Rapid visual event can be seen and studied [Music] foreign 's too fast for the eye to follow or conversely too slow to be perceived as early as 1898 the German botanist Wilhelm pepper compressed the growth of beans over 11 days into a few seconds by use of the time lapse camera movement appears to be speeded up to reveal processes too slow to watch in nature time is accelerated to disclose the plant kingdom in Dynamic growth [Music] we can watch as the daughter circles entwines and strangles its victim when the daughter meets the convolvulus the rivals lock in Mortal Kombat [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] we can observe the processes of growth and Decay as the Strange World of the fungi is revealed foreign [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] ER and microscope were combined in the early 1890s by maray to record the behavior of blood corpuscles he was followed by Commando who made these studies of blood circulation in 1912. foreign ly the time lapse camera has been used to study the ordered complexities of cell division at first these new plant cells seem identical but later they may become Leaf bark or flower we can follow the process of animal growth watch the fertilized egg of a rabbit as it divides and divides again to form an embryo with all its diversity of tissues each with its own function foreign [Music] s we see a whole day's development of a chick embryo now the backbone is beginning to form [Music] with careful manipulation of cells taken from a living organism bone can be grown in isolation foreign [Music] lapse camera has been used to study growth here x-ray cinematography serves to demonstrate function the movement of a dog's leg and of the human stomach were photographed by Dr Mcintyre as early as 1897. more recently x-rays have been combined with microscopic techniques to throw light on small invisible movements such as these the digestive tract of the common ply [Music] combined with television for extended medical examination here drinking and swallowing combined with sound recording to demonstrate the mechanism of human speech Austin oh r e e [Music] different techniques reveal the functioning of other mechanisms a moving object placed before a fly and seen through the multiple lenses of its compound eye shows that it recognizes movement rather than visual detail here the high-speed camera slows down the movements of the fly's wing and reveals the gyroscopic action of the tiny balancing arm just behind it whether it is to study this or this the camera can reveal the elements of movement vital to understanding [Music] its performance is studied in relation to design the spread of droplets from an atomizing spray the action of propellers underwater or the discharge of torpedoes from a submarine the course taken by a single ear of wheat in a threshing machine [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the vibration of a lathe during a particular cutting operation foreign [Applause] [Music] the production of nails when the machine's speed is increased Beyond its capacity foreign the effect of introducing a small metallic object into the air intake of the jet engine [Music] beyond the workshop and the laboratory a new view of Earth and Sky [Music] or the activity normally the solar atmosphere can only be seen during a total eclipse but Leo invented the coronagraph a kind of artificial eclipse with it in 1935 he made this historic record of the solar prominences shooting hundreds of thousands of miles into space [Music] [Applause] foreign other Optical techniques were developed to throw light on the invisible dark ground illumination reveals cellular activity in malignant tissue [Music] an adaptation of the interference microscope shows diseased cells in relief foreign technique makes visible changes in pressure around the wing section of an aircraft color adds a further dimension here it differentiates between areas of pressure and rarefaction [Music] here between hot and cold as water mixes thank you using a different technique it illuminates stress set up by a passing train in this transparent model of a rail uncovering the invisible showing how a water Beetle uses surface tension studying hidden structures within the living cell [Music] penetrating Darkness with infrared light to observe the reflex action of the pupil of the eye peering into the lungs [Music] or passing within the abdomen [Music] looking into the womb and there in the darkness seeing life before birth constantly probing seeking the inaccessible revealing the invisible the motion picture camera records and AIDS our analysis of everything that moves beneath the Sun [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] laughs [Music] foreign [Music] Peter Thomas uh a good blood spatter fan uh friend um who shows up in uh some of these uh early films and this one um started off black and white and went to well color um faded color but um fascinating stuff I haven't seen this film in quite a while and I kind of forgot how great the imagery is and also how early it is like all that late uh 19th century footage uh beautiful stuff that you know shows up in some of these mobile Brothers films that we uh we've been showing early on um wow what do we got today we got lots of interesting stuff uh let's um learn about danger men working Joy oh [Music] America is at work in every village town and city in the country man Paul and Machinery are working together to win this war of production from Bangor to Miami from Seattle to San Diego from the lake does it go the entire nation is building for victory from small machine shops and obscure hamlets to Giant assembly lines in populist industrial patterns factories Mills and plants of every description are pouring out the Implements of warfare in a never-ending stream [Music] [Applause] [Music] north south east West towns and noises of working men and Machinery blend harmoniously together the Isis were of spinning wheels the monotonous drone according to turbine the symbol crash a few presses the Chicago beat of automatic blends with the other sounds of industry in a musical Mastery this is America's Symphony of production but unless and just real accidents are prevented and controlled waste and calluses will change Harmony to Discord and this Mighty Symphony will be filled Americans called one demands greater speed and more production than ever before but this same demand has multiplied the hazards of industry and increase the need for care and vigilance [Music] even now a rising tide of industrial accidents is tampering all war efforts this who is wall grim and real death misery pain suffering not through combat with our enemies but in America's industry and to this fall must be added the injuries and deaths occurring from off the job accident in full at play and in the streets and highways a total of 460 Million Man days of industrial labor lost the production in a single year Manpower that should have been building planes and ships and tanks lost to our Armed Forces just as surely as though they were locked through enemy attacks industrial accidents have far-reaching effects every machine every operator in the country has a specific part to play in America's pattern for victory an idol made in New England holds up an assembly line in Michigan an injured tourmaker in Ohio causes lost time for an instrument worker in California a bottleneck in Oregon delays production in Birmingham every lost Manor retards the constant flow of essential materials unceasing and uninterrupted Productions are essential to Victory every day thousands of new and often untrained workers are being called upon to operate strange and complicated machines in unfamiliar surroundings all thought industry is doing its part to protect Irreplaceable Manpower property and material American Manpower is not inexhaustible modern industry is taking every known precaution regard the health and safety of its indispensable workers gentlemen it's my job to protect the plant and our workers against fires and saboteurs now we maintain a large force of well-trained armed Guardians who are on duty 24 hours a day all instances to the plants including Waterfront railroads and multi-flex loading platforms pedestrian entrances fire escape sidewalk elevators and all other means eventually are guarded night and day and a 10-foot high fence runs entirely around our plant property and survived wire on top will discourage most trespasses our system of identification is virtually iron flat before entering the plant every employee and every prison must have an identification of that and gentlemen these are only uh cure the precautions that we take to protect our workers from fires and saboteurs as you know fire and explosion are two of our worst enemies and my duties include the protection of our workers against these hazards every known precaution is taken to make our buildings as fireproof as possible explosives and highly inflammable materials are isolated and we insist on Good Housekeeping in all departments an elaborate sprinkler system supplemented by a portable fire extinguishers and easily accessible sandpipes for hoses enables us to confine any blazes which may develop to a comparatively small area an important part of our fire prevention program is a very strict set of cloud regulations regarding smoking these and other General plant rules are rigidly enforced to protect materials and Manpower we do everything possible to help our workers keep physically fit every applicant for word must be physically qualified for his specific job and we maintain a fully equipped Plant Hospital which is open 24 hours a day when the plant is working in addition to our hospitals first aid stations are strategically located throughout the plan we insist that workers have every injury treated immediately no matter how slight to further protect our workers against disease and infection sanitary washroom individual paper towels and sanitary drinking fountains are provided for all employees an educational program of Health includes bulletins posters and literature all designed to keep our workers health conscious both in the plan and off the job to further increase workers efficiency lighting Specialists and ventilating Engineers combine their resources maximum light and fresh air are provided both in offices as well as in the factory where a natural ventilation is poor we employ modern artificial ventilation protection from sabotage elimination of fire and explosion hazards those medical supervision sanitary facilities light Airy working conditions our only part of Industry contribution to the conservation of manpower to make the factory a safe place which to work train safety Engineers work night and day to eliminate potential accident patterns our plant safety program revolved around the Safety Committee this committee urges all employees to make suggestions for eliminating Hazard installing safely measures and other improvements for conserving life Limbs and property all suggestions are carefully investigated and forever practical they are adopted every machine is closely studied and mechanical guards are installed on potentially dangerous moving parts specially designed guards yanked workers arms away from danger or sweep the operator's hand from harm as Monster presses stamp Metals into shape will not fans pulleys knives saws and similar hazardous parts are skillfully guarded to permit maximum freedom of operation with minimum exposure to Danger still other appliances are used to prevent accidents safety belts event Falls and high pressure Safety Shoes prevent broken toes and crushed feet goggles protect precious bites and Sparks murders bits of metal and other flying objects respirator metal helmet heavy duty glove gas mask and similar safeguards make up the fighting equipment and The Man Behind The Man Behind the gun these are some of the sentiments of safety which industry employs to guard against actresses but all the safeguards used by modern industry are not enough every worker individually must do his part to prevent accidents by exercise and care and alertness on his job and by adhering to the common sense rules of safety industrial management is doing its hard to eliminate Hazard you the worker must do yours learn your job thoroughly pay strict attention to instructors and ask questions understand the working parts of every machine you operate and familiarize yourself with all the hazards of the job be a good housekeeper Good Housekeeping is essential in preventing accidents keep that part of the plan for which you are responsible clean in order see that isle is a clear of obstacles keep oil and grease off the machine benches and floors and pick up Nails pieces of metal and other debris which may cause injuries always stop your machine before cleaning it and deposit oiling materials in Copper receptacle take your job seriously war is a serious business horseplay practical jokes and falling at no place in the shop Plant or factory save your fun for after working out [Music] loose leaves are dangerous around moving Machinery in place women workers could wear neat trim uniform and could be especially careful to protect their hair be sure guards are in place and working properly don't try to cut corners and increase production by removing machine guards check them they are your lifeline always wear proper safety equipment goggles Safety Shoes belts gloves helmets and other safety appliances are useless unless they are worn protect your eyes fingers toes and other parts of your body before you start a job always use proper tools for the job and be sure they are in good condition avoid makeshift tools files without handles chisels with mushrooms heads broken screwdrivers or other tools take time to be safe don't use makeshift ladders or scaffold I'll material securely and what your steps lift heavy load properly bend your knees keep your back as erected possible and push up with your legs never lift a two-man load alone obey plant regulations and observe all warning signs these regulations and warnings are for your protection a shortcut through dangerous locations a thoughtless Act or a callous cigarette May mean injury or death to you or your fellow workers report any unsafe working conditions hazards or practices your suggestions will be welcomed and may save a life report every accident immediately no matter how slight the injury may be if you should be injured you must get pumped attention never let fellow employees remove particles from your eyes instead go immediately to the planned hospital or first aid station [Music] by following these simple Common Sense rules you can do your part to prevent and reduce accidents on your job finally extend safe practices and habits beyond your work remember that off the job accident illness and loss of efficiency are just as costly as accidents occurring on the job use care in common sense at work at home at play and in the streets and highways accept War's challenge to safety and do your utmost individually to prevent accidents which rob department and how it relates to you and to everyone else who works there unless most of the businesses accounts receivable are received Payday for everyone could be in Jeopardy is this John Allen with c d Enterprises and that makes the people who sit at the telephones collecting overdue accounts key individuals within your organization I'll call again when he's in thank you do you see this work as a challenge you bet it's an important job someone has confidence in me or I wouldn't have it and it's important not just to the company but to the customer too customer the most effective collection Representatives think customer they remember that the customer they're talking to is the one everybody in your organization management and Design production workers sales people office Personnel shippers everybody working together has helped to win away from the competition the customer tied to your company now by a single line yeah this is John Allen c d Enterprises yeah my secretary said you might call Mr Allen the reason I'm calling is your friend will the customer still be a customer when you've completed your call your attitude May determine whether the answer will be yes or no the best attitude to maintain is a positive one toward yourself and your work you should also feel that you are a key member of the team a valuable player who must come in contact with customers on a one-to-one basis every day your attitude is important when dealing with customers even those who haven't been able to pay their bills but it's important that your attitude toward customers is one in which you intend to be helpful as helpful toward them as you expect them to be toward you a positive attitude will go a long way in making the call successful I agree in both situations people will do what you expect them to do whether you're new at collections or an old hand at this job you need pre-call planning before you call next to a positive attitude pre-call planning best determines how you'll proceed and how helpful you'll be pre-call planning starts with a review of the delinquent account a thorough review will make your call that much easier if it's a first call start a call record it's important to use a mature business-like tone of voice listeners are turned off by a high-pitched sing-song or rapid fire shotgun blast delivery is this Boyd remember this is a business call using first names only may be considered pushy and in some instances may not even be legal that's an important Point laws concerning collection practices vary from state to state we assume your employer has reviewed with you the rules and regulations you must comply with but the fair debt collection practices act of Congress is specific about telephone identifications basic to the law and to good techniques is to make sure you speak to the right person verify the name and address or company affiliation first you must not discuss a debt on the telephone with anyone other than the debtor in the case of a company's overdue account you must speak only with the person authorized to make payment it's the law that you must identify yourself you cannot claim to be an attorney if you are not nor pretend to represent any firm other than the one you work for the company to which the debt is owed may I say something certainly by now you've gathered that your job is covered by legal Thou shalt knots familiarize yourself with them know the law for the remainder of this program we'll assume that you do as we suggest useful techniques ask for money no the successful collection rep always asks for information the best way to achieve this is with open-ended questions the kind that begin with who what where when and how who said you could skip a payment what is the specific problem with the typewriter where did you return the shoes that didn't fit when will the bill be paid how can we reach an agreement that will satisfy everyone the reason you ask for information is to find out how you can help the customer and to give an opening to tell you directly or indirectly why the bill remains unpaid having asked then listen the reason for the delay in payment might be buried under the response to your request for information for example oh the doll came all right too late for my granddaughter's birthday I ordered it six weeks ahead of time and then had to buy something else and I thought is there not in any hurry why should I be I could put it away for Christmas oh I am sorry Mrs weapon but you do intend to keep the doll the right response comes naturally from having heard the disappointment the frustration even the vindictiveness of the customer and being sympathetic to hurt and to anger which you didn't cause our records show that we mailed a notice that the doll was back ordered and we never got a cancellation from you maybe it got lost in the mail but if you still think your granddaughter would like the doll I didn't know I was supposed to cancel and no I've lost the papers that came with it I have the amount right here 31.97 including shipping and handling if you sent us a check today you could have some of your Christmas shopping out of the way already listening nearly always provides a clue as to how you can be helpful well I'm sorry you had to call but as a matter of policy we can't make payment unless the invoices are in order hmm so would you please send us a copy of the invoice dated July 6th in the amount of uh ten thousand twenty one dollars so that I can authorize payment it'll be in the mail today when you listen you won't always hear an answer as easy as that to respond to if a product is defective if a service was improperly performed or something was damaged in shipment you can have but be prepared to follow it up with a solid solution to the customer's problem if you'll return the package to us all alert our shipping Department to cancel the billing and reship and rebuild when the broken item comes in will that be satisfactory you're right there was a quantity discount in effect when you ordered I'll notify your sales rep of the error on the invoice and ask our accounting department to issue an amended billing I'll put a tracer on those parts shipped directly from the factory right now if you make a promise note it on your call record and keep the promise make sure you do everything you told the customer you would do by now I'll bet you're wondering when is he going to get to the hard part to the tips on Ready Answers for some of the toughest customers while asking for additional information in some cases you may even have to impart information to the customer let's take a look at some effective ways to handle stallers I don't know anything about it that's not the case this time Mr McAfee you said you live at 946 Sunset and that's where the merch ice was delivered a Mary McAfee there that wife of mine she didn't tell me the check is in the mail oh good now may I have the number of the check the date on which you wrote it the amount and the address to which it was sent for my records I'll be happy to wait you misunderstood me I meant the check will be in the mail today well fine fine and I'll make a note that the full amount 67.50 will be in the mail today the 31st and I'll tell our accountant to look for your check in the next delivery from the post office the car's a lemon I'm not going to put another dime in it I'm sorry to hear that no wonder you're upset have you taken it in for all the warranty checks the warranties expired that's awful Mr Decker however your problem is with the dealer or maybe the manufacturer in the loan agreement you signed with the bank the vehicle can be repossessed if a payment isn't made by the 10th is there any way we can work something out polite but firm means sticking to your guns if everything you've learned indicates your business is in the right and if you suspect a customer may be in the wrong trying to wheedle concessions to which he or she is not entitled continue to State the terms originally agreed upon and what your company's recourse will be but be absolutely honest do not say the merchandise will be repossessed unless it will be do not say you intend to sue unless that is your intent do not say you intend to turn the account over to a collection agency unless that will be your next course of action headache response is always better than a threat threats may be illegal and can often backfire if they feel harassed customers may bring action against you but we were talking about ways of being polite but firm I haven't got the money you mean you're short of cash today will you be paid soon I'm out of work my unemployment has run out and I haven't got the money I see well I don't want to make things worse for you just a thought though do you have a relative that you can turn to only your supervisor can let you know what concessions to make in cases of genuine need you must know what these concessions are and be ready to negotiate what your supervisor allows you to negotiate these are policy decisions that vary from organization to organization continue to be sympathetic and if possible offer avenues for getting the account settled perhaps the unpaid balance can be spread out in smaller payments or some other agreeable Arrangement can be made to help people make good their debts customers will be grateful to you for your understanding and will retain their loyalty to the firm once the crisis has been resolved we can't pay the utility bills have been so high and we can't let them go we're afraid we'll be cut off Mrs Dean are you aware of the warm Hearts fund it helps senior citizens on fixed incomes pay their winter utilities now if warm Hearts could help with those bills you'd have no trouble with this account would you no I wouldn't I'll look up the warm Hearts number for you right now thank you for your kindness glad to help believe it customers don't forget people who respond to them as people even in the most unpleasant situations we just declared bankruptcy that must have been a painful decision but since it's been made I'll need your bankruptcy case number and the name of the attorney who's handling it for you j203 Mr Clinton oh and could you do me a favor could you send me a copy of the bankruptcy notice yes good I'll be looking for it and I am sorry you've been a valued customer thank you be sure and flag your call report so that you do not get in touch with a declared bankrupt again to do so would be in violation of that person's rights but problems like these will be only a minor part of your job if you keep a positive attitude toward yourself and the customer make sure you do your pre-call planning and follow these simple techniques speak to the right person identify yourself accurately know the law ask for information listen have Ready Answers for customer problems lend a sympathetic ear and be polite but firm in creating a solution to the customer's payment problem it all adds up to maintaining control because when you're in control you demonstrate those skills that make you a key employee to your organization good you've said you'll send the full amount today as soon as I get it your account will be marked paid up and you can have the use of your credit thank you so um I guess I just saw that there was a problem with the sync audio sync and a couple of films and I apologize for that I'm not 100 sure what was going on with that but um and even though get to it hold on uh Charles old father who is the man who narrates and sings shake hands with danger uh we'll see him here complaint or excuse you can imagine no I am not satisfied you want to know why no instructions ten thousand little pieces to put together and you leave out the instruction book really I'm sorry so yeah Charles old father uh he worked for Centron he was I believe a law professor at a University of Kansas and so he does show up in some Centron films uh the famous one though of course is shake hands with danger when everybody's like who's singing that song who's narrating that song it's that guy the guy who's complaining about not having instructions in his uh kit um so there you go uh I found out that he was also in um the day after because the day after was filmed kind of around Lawrence and he plays a farmer who is covered with radioactive Ash and is complaining about um the government uh support for Farmers but uh this one is much better much better shot and I think he shows up in an office safety film too um so anyways yeah there you go there's your a little geeking out about uh Centron films and what a what an amazing film as far as you know trying to create this I don't know trying to ease people into doing what is really a difficult thing to do like telemarketing is bad I think I have some other telemarketing uh films as well but this whole thing about um being a thoughtful collection to call a person uh is kind of fascinating um so thanks for tuning in today very much appreciate it uh if you like what you saw you can certainly um
