e e e e e e hello everybody this is skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm films and uh I am inside my house because it's a little chilly and damp outside um I have to figure out some other way to get vitamin D but um yeah thanks for joining us uh so yesterday we watched a bunch of films about the telephone and today I don't know I got a wild hair and I was like why don't we do uh show films about listening uh so uh and one film about sound um so let's go ahead and get started what is sound really let's think about it enjoy [Music] that sounds like a Fourth of July celebration but it isn't really it's just Tom on his way to school wouldn't Tom be surprised if somehow we could turn off the s when he strikes that can and that box of course we're just pretending we can't really turn off the sound we all know that if you strike an object it usually makes a [Music] noise but do you know what do you know what causes sound why are some sounds different from others here are several experiments you can perform to answer these questions and to learn more about sound a yard stick lying on the table does not make any noise but if we snap it so that it moves up and down rapidly it makes a clattering noise when it's stops moving the sound stops also a rubber band doesn't make any sound either but if you pluck it so that it moves back and forth quickly it does make a sound the sound dies away as the rubber band stops moving we are beginning to learn that an object makes a sound only when it is moving in fact all sound is caused by movement if nothing on the Earth ever moved there would be no sounds when water moves you hear a splashing sound when the leaves of a tree move back and forth you hear a rustling sound [Applause] when a door slam shut the wood of the door is moving back and forth quickly any rapid back and forth movement is called vibration we made the yard stick vibrate we made the rubber band vibrate [Music] and we can even make the air in an empty test tube vibrate when we blow across the top of the tube the air inside moves up and down quickly and this makes a whistling sound most of the objects that make sounds vibrate so rapidly that you cannot actually see them move for example it's almost impossible ble to see this Bell vibrate although you can hear the sound in order to prove that it does vibrate tie a small iron washer to a fine thread and hold it lightly against the Bell if the Bell isn't ringing nothing happens but when you ring the bell the washer bounces away because the vibration of the Bell is pushing it now we know that sound is caused by vibration but in order to hear the sound these vibrations must reach our ears how does this happen for instance how does the sound of the electric Bell travel to our ears when the bell rings it vibrates very rapidly and pushes against the air around it this rapid pushing makes sound waves in the air which travel away from the bell in all directions if the waves reach our ears we can hear the sound of course you cannot really see sound waves but they do travel something like this most of the sounds that reach our ears travel to them through the air can sound travel through other materials too suppose we put this toy frog under water will the sound travel through the water to our ears listen closely let's try another experiment do you think that sound can travel through wood hold one end of a stick of wood against your ear while someone else scratches the other end of the stick can you hear the sound these these experiments have shown that sounds can travel easily through water and through solid materials as well as through air are all sounds [Music] alike here is one way in which sounds are different we say that one sound had a higher pitch than the other sound this rubber band makes a higher pitched sound because it vibrates faster than the other rubber band the faster an object vibrates the higher the [Music] pitch do you know why these two rubber bands vibrate at different speeds the reason is that one rubber band is shorter than the other one and therefore vibrates faster the metal bars on this toy xylophone are different lengths the long bars vibrate slowly and make low pitched sounds while the short bars vibrate more rapidly and so make higher pitched [Music] sounds the shorter the object the faster it vibrates this test tube produces a low pitched sound when you blow gently over the top of it but if you pour some water into the tube it produces a higher pitch Sound by adding water you reduce the amount of air in the tube a shorter column of air vibrates faster and therefore makes a higher pitch sound now see what you can do with a row of test tubes filled with different amounts of water [Music] you have learned a few important facts about sound that sound is caused by vibrating objects that sound waves travel through air water and solid materials that the faster an object vibrates the higher the pitch of the [Music] sound and in order to learn more about sound see if you can find the answers to these questions how does a piano make sounds why are some sounds louder than others what makes a Coco clock Coco [Music] what makes a cuckoo clock cuckoo so I have many other films about sound but I got to tell you this one is so good uh I love that it starts with that kid just beating on stuff at the beginning um it's really really great and so young American films I don't think they ever made a film I think what they did is they licensed or they distributed films for other companies so mcra Hill for um I can't remember the Canadian film company uh I I'll have to get back to on that uh for Centron uh for other entities and uh so and this was Leonard peek did this Leonard peek did eventually did one of my favorite films squeak the squirrel uh and he did a film about hypnosis which is kind of whacked out um some of these films we've seen before but I've added some new stuff too so you you'll definitely even though you've seen some of these some some other stuff will uh you'll go wow I don't think I've ever seen this um here's a film about talking and listening enjoy way [Music] Last Summer Don visited his friends and asked them to come to his [Music] home he asked Bill he asked Sam he asked Phil his brother Allan and Paul he also asked Marvin and birt and Victor they met Tuesday [Music] [Applause] [Applause] afternoon Don had asked the boys over because he had wanted to start a club but this wasn't exactly what he had in mind his sister Alice didn't like it either won't you please quiet down what went wrong Don had an idea I think we've got to talk one at a time that's right we don't quit talking at the same time we won't get anywhere it's going to be an off done wait you're still not talking one at a time I think we've got to take turns not talk when anyone else does then who gets to talk first Don thought it over he remembered how it had been in school there when someone wanted to talk he raised his hand usually whoever raised his hand first got to talk first of course this was different from school I don't think that we have to raise our hands but why don't we make sure the person before has finished okay can I talk now yeah okay what I want to say is I don't know why you want us to get together we've already got SC meetings and a ball team listen wait a while crowd and we don't have a chance to talk about wait let's let Phil talk first why not me because Dawn is running this meeting it's his house that's one way of deciding because Don was running the meeting he had to do a lot of the talking now listen this won't have anything to do with Scouts it'll cost the dime it won't have anything to do with the ball team I mean we'll have a regular meeting things but not the same day as other things what was that about Don seemed to be talking about several things all at once why don't we talk first about what day we're going to meet school's going to start soon and a lot of us will have to be home by 5 bill is talking about only one thing meeting times the only way to get anything done is to talk about one thing at a time this sister home after school and Marvin has to go to a special class after his regular school is that right Marvin you don't have to go every day do you no just Tuesday and Thursday can't you talk louder I can't hear I said no just Tuesday and Thursday that was better loud enough for all to hear but not too loud and it seemed that the boys had learned a few things about talking then we go fishing at theek most of them tried to take turns and each tried to make sure someone else wasn't talking before he began and when two boys wanted to talk I think we should get they let Don decide who would talk first though it was hard to do the boys tried to talk about one thing at a time and whoever was talking tried to talk loud enough and they were offered to go this made things easier for the boys and it kept them from disturbing Don's sister Alice and her friends in the Next Room Alice was teaching Margot and Virginia to play her new game first you spin a number then whatever number comes up he move that many spaces ahead if you land on a green square you get an extra turn and you spin again if you land on a blue square you stay there but if you land on a red square you take a card that lets you know what to do next okay it's your turn Margo well Alice talked about one thing at a time and she talked loud enough for the others to hear so Margot should have known what to do if she been listening oh that's not right you only take a card if you land on red why the mistake Margot thought she knew I'm sorry I guess I wasn't listening listening can be important what's the use of talking clearly if the people you're talking to don't know how to listen but how do you listen Alice and her friends learned something about this as they talked about the game now in this part of the game you're supposed to say the number of cards you are going to pick the person to right the and I don't for you to take three please don't talk while Alice is explaining a person can't listen well and talk at the same time so a good listener is quiet While others speak the girls wanted to learn the game so they tried to be quiet and to listen I was saying I spin once then you spin once whoever spins the highest number gets to move ahead 10 spaces whoever spins the lowest number has to move back T the others don't move at all they I'm sorry Mar but that noise bothers me it's hard to listen to what Alice is saying I guess I never thought of it that way before I'll stop well go ahead about the game I guess that's all I can remember now do you have any questions yes you said whoever spins the lowest number has to go back 10 spaces does that mean 10 spaces from where you are when you spin or 10 spaces from where you would be if you took your Alice are you listening yes well I'm sorry but it feels funny to talk with you looking the other way so Alice looked right at Virginia as she talked and she found that it really seemed to help Virginia speak Alice thought about that and about other things she and her friends had said about listening and as the game went on she tried to be quiet While others were talking to pay attention not play or do anything else at the same time and to look at the person who was talking a few minutes ago the bo boys had also learned some things about talking and listening things you might want to remember when you're with your friends or your family for instance riding in a car it's especially important to speak loud enough but not too loud loud talk can be disturbing to the driver at dinner too it's good to take turns talking when something important has happened and you're excited you might try to say a lot at once but remember it's better to talk about one thing at a time when you're shopping and want to learn about what you're buying of course you should listen While others speak and you know it's easier to learn something new if you look at a person who's talking and stop doing other things perhaps watching Don and Alice and their friends you've learned something too something about talking letting others know what you think and listening learning the things that others may have to [Music] say yeah we have seen this film um I knew that but it's been it's been about a year so um I wanted to bring it out again all those accents of those kids it's pretty great uh warsh um also so earlier I mentioned that young American films often dist they were just Distributors they didn't really make the films they basically licens films from other companies so Centron mcra Hill and Crawley Crawley uh was a Adan film company and they did a lot of really great films uh social acceptability is one uh social sex attitudes and Adolescence is another one um a lot of ones about trying to fit in uh those are great Crawley films um all right so this is uh cornet listen well learn well enjoy [Music] this is the story of how our class discovered how to listen it began one day when we were playing a game a in game we were going to try to identify different sounds on the record would you like to try it with us listen it's a train is this what you thought of when you heard the sound well that's what Jerry saw let's go on to the next sound ready that's a car yes a car but why was Jerry always first to catch the sound did Jerry think listening was important yes he did why just the other day Jerry learned how to hold a Hammer the right way by listening carefully to what his father told him and on the way to school listening is important too sounds can tell you that the streets are slippery and you have to be extra careful by listening Jerry found all sorts of interesting things he might have missed he found Birds he noticed friends because he listens yes Jerry thinks listening is very important but how does he listen how can all of us listen we decided to try an exp experiment to find out how to listen Betty offered to try first she was going to do this she was going to listen to the next sound from the record player and also think about how she listens and this is the way Betty listens she heard the sound from the record player but she listened to other things at the same time she listened to sounds from inside the classroom and she listened to sounds from outside the classroom and it was was all a jumble as she listened to all the sounds at the same time she couldn't identify the sound on the record now how had she listened I listened to everything and I just got confused I tried to soak it all in like a sponge yes listening like a sponge but is it a good way to listen though you soak up everything when you try to think about it it is still confused that's no good not for listening because I didn't guess the sound maybe if I try it again Tred it hard to listen just to the record it's a typewriter you see Betty can select the important sound if she tries and so can we bill was thinking about how he listened he wanted to try out his listening habits so we began a new sound Bill started to listen to the sound but then Bill listened to first one sound then another [Music] sound yeah why wasn't Bill able to identify the sound from the record well I guess I jump from one sound to another like like a grasshopper yes listening like a grasshopper jumping from one thing to another is that a good way to listen because though a grasshopper jumps to many things does it stay with any one thing long enough I didn't not long enough to guess the sound anyway let me try again I'll bet I can stick with one sound that's an airplane yes bill can keep on listening to the important Sound by trying can you and then I noticed Sally she didn't seem to be playing our game would she try but even before I started the record I could see that Sally's thoughts were far away again she didn't seem to hear the record at all thinking about other things kept her from listening Sally didn't guess the sound she really hadn't even heard the S uh it it wasn't long enough [Music] I guess I was thinking about something else I pulled myself in like a turtle and I didn't listen like a turtle but is that a good way to listen doesn't a turtle miss a lot well I think uh you shouldn't listen like a turtle I think uh uh I can keep myself from thinking about other things if I try may I hear that record again it wasn't easy for Sally to keep her mind from wandering not at first but suddenly she saw Indians I did it yes she did it by picturing the sound in her mind well that's how we discovered a great deal about listening before long we had worked out some suggestions about how to listen well first pick out the important sound remember how confused Betty was until she did this don't be like a sponge second keep on that sound don't let other sounds make you jump around like a grasshopper and third try to picture that sound think what it means remember how that helped Sally well those were the suggestions we worked out then we were ready to try them out in listening to a story would they help us understand the story better will they help you why don't you try them with us as we hear the story it was a happy summer for Charles because although he was only a boy he was doing a man's job Charles lived in a foreign country you might guess what part of the world he lived in if you heard him saying goodby to his mother on his way to where he worked Charles often enjoyed listening to he climbed up a steep path where often he heard and sometimes he heard this [Music] sound finally he reached the place where he worked can you guess what his work was there were no other people there but Charles was never lonely because all around him were his friends who made sounds like these can you picture this boy what work does he do who are his friends what other sound Clues did you hear now what picture do you see is this what you saw are you discovering how to listen [Music] um the the girl who couldn't pay attention reminds me of Ralph uh the Warner Brothers cartoons about Ralph who's daydreaming um I can imagine that she's also daydreaming about something um being a pirate or um flying a u bomber all right uh so uh we have seen those before uh here's something we haven't seen before how to listen to a New Dimensions in sound maybe 4D sound what do you think let's let's watch and find out enjoy [Music] listening to great music such as Jovi's Romeo and Juliet is always a thrilling experience and through the remarkable achievements of modern electronic recording a performance like this may be enjoyed in our homes whenever we please [Music] it's true of course that listening to music at home is a matter of personal preference and taste now here's a man named Smith he's the relax and drinking the beauty of it all type of [Music] listener what have we here another Smith he's of the LMA I'm a conductor too who School of listening H looks like fun and a third Smith yes this Smith is one of those did you hear that English horn over the viola tremolo type of listeners now all these Smiths simply go to prove two things one different Smiths enjoy listening to music differently two almost every Home music lover is in search of the same thing the truest most lifelike reproduction of the original music possible or perfect [Music] Fidelity or high fidelity [Music] or high [Music] five but what is high five and what's the difference between a high fidelity record player and any good ordinary record player so let's ask Smith he should know excuse me uh could you tell us [Music] oh yes pardon me you're listening aren't you well all right it just so happens I know A Smith or two who also know a high-fi when they hear [Music] Itor no that's not the HiFi that's Smith H what' you say I said you're Smith and could you tell us what Hi-Fi is that's what I thought you said Hi-Fi why sure you bet certainly I can tell you what Hi-Fi is what is it Hi-Fi is sound reproduction from an instrument that has been especially designed and constructed to give you sound that will be as nearly as possible the same sound you would hear in the original plane what you get in a Hi-Fi set is best described as presence a feeling of life and nearness in the music once you've heard High Fidelity reproduction you'll be hard to satisfy with anything less he you really did know didn't you now can you tell us how does one get high fidelity reproduction I can you know of course that most people hear sounds within a frequency range of 20 to 15,000 Cycles I do no I don't well you know that the phenomenon uncalled sound is a wave in the air pulsing at a certain speed now these waves hit the eard drum and are turned into vibrations which the brain translates into what we call sound now the waves pulsing slower than 20 times per second and faster than 15,000 times per second are mostly missed by the human ear now these pulsations are referred to as cycles and are counted so many per second thus the number of cycles per second in a given sound are described as its frequency are you with me not exactly with you but somewhere nearby oh well you you can see the high and low frequency cycles of sound in that Motion Picture film you're showing now watch while I sing a low [Applause] note that was a low frequency sound as you can see now a high frequency sound as you saw that one pulsated much faster of course most Hi-Fi enthusiasts insist that a high-fi set must be able to reproduce all frequencies up to 15,000 cycles per second of course when I build them yes well what would you say it takes to be a do-it-yourself high-fi Enthusiast like yourself oh doesn't take much Only Money a thorough knowledge of electronics lot of spare time your wife threatens to leave you but if you want real hiyi well and that's one Smith speaking there are others this Smith for instance another do-it-yourself high-fi Enthusiast oh no no no not me I'm a component parts man of course stupid of me what do you mean I simply mean that I assemble my highi set from pre-assembled component units speaker and um amplifier record player and do you think you can tell us what high-fi is oh yes yes of course you know that sound waves I know I know we're up to where the sound comes out of the record oh well as the record plays the needle Wiggles at the right number of cycles per second which have been recorded now this creates electrical impulses which are then boosted by this amplifier and then pushed out through that speaker in the form of sound wave then I suppose that the bigger and better the speaker the higher the F so to speak if you don't mind a bad pun oh I don't mind the pun but you have to be careful with statements like that I said something wrong well well I just don't want you to get the idea that merely by adding a big speaker to an ordinary record player or radio you get high fidelity all the components of a real Hi-Fi system have to be of the same high quality and properly balanced I see what you mean and I'll watch that from now on and tell me do you have to be an electronic genius with nothing but spare time for this kind of Hi-Fi oh no don't no I simply buy the components build and finish a cabinet for each and hook them together none of that messy Do-it yourself stuff for me and there's still another Smith's opinion on the subject of high-fi are there more at least one there's this Smith who seems to be enjoying all the the advantages of true high-fi the easy way would you call yourself a component parts man a do it yourself or what no I'm strictly an enjoy it myself highi Enthusiast I see you like it the easy way and yet every component of this set is the finest Hi-Fi equipment made I get perfect High Fidelity still my work is confined to stacking records are loading tape clicking a switch and listening and what listening oh monoral listening it just can't be beat I beg your pardon for what kind of oral listening monoral that's what I've been listening to music from One Sound Source like a record or a radio then there's stereophonic sound perhaps I better let you hear the difference that would be just dandy now this is a stereo tape player the sound here has been recorded on the tape magnetic PL but mind you this stereophonic tape player is not just ordinary high-fi it isn't no sir this is high five plus this is a new dimension in sound this is this is what I want to hear already okay but when I push the button on the tape you'll have to turn off the projector have you got that when I see you turn on the tape I turn off the projector right now hey that was great Sensational terrific what is it I told you stereophonic sound a new dimension in sound stop saying that and tell me what how well it's fair fairly simple I've heard that before too well you know that natural sound is received through our two ears from all directions so when you sit in a concert hall you hear the music not only from directly ahead but from both sides overhead and Below but because one ear is usually a little farther from any one sound than the other you don't quite hear the same sound at the same time and both ears thus you can determine Direction and that's what happens with the two speakers system yes but be careful don't get the idea that two speakers on an ordinary high-fi set will give you stereophonic sound they won't you see stereophonic sound for the home is recorded on two separate tracks each one giving special emphasis to certain sections of the orchestra as heard from those positions now when played back simultaneously on two separate systems the sounds are Blended together to achieve a new dimension in sound impossible to obtain in a an oral recording but I'm able to use the speaker on my regular Hi-Fi because the manufacturer has made provision for this sound of the future you get the idea oh yes I've got it but I wish you'd explain it to me it's really very simple now let's not start that again you remember when these were standed equipment in every parlor sure a stereoscope hey a ray of light stereoscope stereophonic right that's where the name comes from because the visual principle involved here has been applied to sound the only difference between these two pictures is that they were photographed by cameras set slightly apart about as far apart as the distance between one's two eyes and when seen through the viewer the two blend together to create an illusion of depth and width you see what I mean oh yes I've got it now in stereophonic recording the same principle is used two separate groups of microphones are placed from 8 to 20 ft apart and each group records on a separate track I'm with you now the separate soundtracks play over separate speaker systems correct and when the listeners are centrally located in front of the two speaker systems they get the illusion of sound coming from a wide area as if a full Orchestra were in the room sounds great but who can afford a full Orchestra in the living room or even a reasonable simile you can nearly everyone can they're amazingly inexpensive and new and more exciting stereophonic tapes are being put on the market every day would you like to hear a sample I'm with you all right let's try FY gret's Grand Canyon Suite as recorded by the Boston Pops Orchestra with Arthur feedler conducting it'll make you feel as if you're really in the Grand Canyon wait a a minute I can do a few tricks too you know you let me hear the Grand Canyon and I'll let you see it it's a deal are you ready let her go so this is fascinating to me uh that this is a demonstration film so somebody would be uh playing the uh tape deck which would probably have giant speakers and would have a great setup um and of course this is because the limitations of 16 mm film which is mono in most cases um and also has very low Fidelity it's very narrow spectrum that can be optically printed um even with Magnetic sound it's better but it's still problematic so um this is a fascinating film in that regard uh and that there is this interaction that's taking place and so where would this film be shown obviously uh someone who was an RCA this would probably be shown uh to salespeople to get them excited but then also this would probably be shown in inviting um audio files to come to wherever whoever's selling RCA uh High Fidelity equipment uh which at the time uh furniture stores were a lot of people that were uh carrying these home entertainment systems that there wasn't really a music store or a place where you could buy audio components um so uh I will go ahead and let you watch the Grand Canyon in silence for for for so fascinating um I uh yeah I you know we've seen interactive films before where it's like stop the projector and discuss um but this is the first one it's like stop the projector and start the tape deck um cuz you're going to listen to something that's going to blow your mind um pretty great speaking of listening here's some commercials that are all about listening or at least ease dropping enjoy J service from my broker says in the long run that kind of investment could be a good idea
