Hello everybody. I'm Skip Elshiemer. Welcome to the AV Geeks Lunchtime Streaming Show where we watch old 16 mm films and I am at the archive um upstairs, not in the film vault, but in where we will be moving our equipment back. Um and so everything is still higgly-piggly. Uh I'm here because I'm going to be installing uh heat registers and cleaning up some debris and uh maybe installing a toilet seat. Uh in the meantime, um pulled some films. I know on Fridays people like to watch commercials, so I've got some commercials for you, but uh this is uh films about dogs that I haven't shown. I don't think I've shown. Like I I looked in the database and spreadsheet I didn't see that we'd shown them, but here's uh we'll start off with the Boswells Bon Voyage. Enjoy. My name is Boswell. I live in the city with my friend Gilbert. I'm the dog. Gilbert and I belong to each other. We spend a lot of time just walking around, sniffing into things. Sniffing is one of my greatest pleasures. But just when I find something really inviting, Gilbert wants to go home and read a book. He's a real bookworm. He reads stories of travel and adventure about explorers like Columbus and far away places like Timbuktu. And he tells me all about them. One day I thought, why not take a trip and explore these places myself? Why not take a trip? Take a trip. Next thing I knew I was down on the dock. I sneaked aboard a big ocean liner and hid until we were on our way. A sea breeze was blowing, and what a wonderful smell that is. As any sailor can tell you. I was enjoying these new scents when suddenly He couldn't mean me, could he? I'd better run. He just wanted to see my ticket, but I didn't have a ticket. They called me a stowaway and locked me up behind bars. I lost all track of time, but we did cross the ocean. And I did get to Paris. Up. Up to the very top of the Eiffel Tower I went. I saw the Arc de Triomphe. I visited the Cathedral of Notre Dame, which stands on a small island in the River Seine. But it was hot and I was tired. So I went for a swim. Wanting to see more of the world, I headed south to Spain. I could hardly believe my eyes. Castles right out of fairy tales and windmills, too. But watching windmills makes you dizzy. After a while, I couldn't look anymore. Spain is full of donkeys. But they're not very friendly to strange dogs. So I took off for the famous city of Venice. The city is built in the water. It has canals instead of streets and gondolas instead of buses. A friendly gondolier took me past the Bridge of Sighs to St. Mark's Plaza. At high tide, the water splashes over the plaza. But the pigeons don't seem to mind. Just like at home, the people feed them. And I chase them. Having seen all I wanted in Venice, I took to the road once more. I came Budapest in Hungary. I found lots of parks and sweet-smelling flowers. Remember, sniffing is one of my greatest pleasures. Following my nose, I crossed every kind of landscape. For days and days I kept on going. The world is a far bigger place than I had supposed. Finally, I came to a great dry desert. There was nothing to sniff here, nothing to eat or drink, either. I was tired and thirsty and just about to give up when suddenly water! I leaped for joy. It was the Nile River. I was in Egypt near the ancient temple of Abu Simbel, built more than 3,000 years ago. In Egypt, I visited the Sphinx and the pyramids and met my first camel. They are proud and unfriendly animals. This one refused me a ride back on that terrible desert just because I was a dog. Fortunately, some friendly boatmen gave me a lift down the Nile, avoiding the desert this time. We sailed away from Egypt across the Mediterranean Sea and all the way to Dubrovnik in Yugoslavia. There I met a little girl named Sonia. Together we walked along the old walls of this ancient city that goes back to the Middle Ages. Being with Sonia reminded me of the walks I'd taken with Gilbert back home. Home. I decided that the time had come for me somehow to buy a ticket home. I certainly didn't want to stow away again. I said goodbye to Sonia and headed west along dusty roads until I reached the ruins of the old Roman Forum. I visited St. Peter's Cathedral and admired the fountain splashing at the entrance. I noticed posters everywhere offering a reward for a lost, rare, old coin. If I found it, I could certainly buy my ticket home. Then, I remembered the story that Gilbert had told me about the Trevi Fountain, the most beautiful fountain in all of Rome. Coins are tossed in by people to help make their wishes come true. Could someone have tossed that rare old coin in by mistake? There was only one way to find out. If I looked hard enough and long enough, I could hardly believe my eyes. The reward would be mine. The Trevi Fountain had made my wish come true. I took the coin to the nearest police station and then bought a first-class ticket home. What a different way to travel. All day long I was petted and fussed over. And I tell you after my trip, I could use a little rest and relaxation. I had breakfast in bed in my own private state room. It was a happy day when the steward pointed out that we were almost home. I took my last sniff of salty sea air and decided that I would sleep for a week. Suddenly, I was back at home on my favorite spot of carpet. Gilbert tried to rouse me. But I had just traveled halfway around the world. And I was in no mood to take another walk. Wow. So, that was somebody's excuse to travel Europe and travel the world to get all this beautiful footage. Uh yeah, not the first filmmakers that have tried that. Let me tell you. All right, this next film is uh made by Walter J. Cline uh for the American Humane Society, I think. And I don't feel like I've shown this, but maybe I have. Like it it kind of sounds familiar to me. But this is a New Leash on Life. Enjoy. >> No, I couldn't have hit him. Where did he come from? I never saw him. I couldn't have hit him. Hey, where'd you go? Where are you? Hey. Hey, where are you? What do you think you're doing right in front of my car like that? Come on, we got to get out of here. Filthy. Actually kind of cute under all that. Well, you do look like you've been on your own for a while. Terrific. Now, what am I going to do with you? I'm already late for Mr. Sheldon's meeting. Well, maybe I could take you someplace out in the country where you won't walk in front of cars. I could take you out to the city park. There's lots of open space there. You'd love it. You'd leave it. Come on, come on. I'm already late, and now I've got my own canine legal assistant. Hey. >> Any messages? I said Cindy, what is that? State's evidence or something? Uh she ran out in the street in front of my car. Oh Cindy, you're always the softy. Anyway, Mr. Sheldon had to start the Landers meeting without you and he wants those adoption case papers by Cindy. Cindy. Martha, do you own a dog? I've got the best, dear. Quiet, never barks, and very clean. Doesn't require shots or trips to the vet. No neutering either. He seems quite content. Really? Is he a purebred? Absolutely. 100% pure polyester. Martha. Cindy, you're not thinking about keeping that dog, are you? I don't know, maybe. Here. What's that? Yesterday's paper. You're going to need it. Hi, I uh I'm not even going to ask. Listen, several of us are meeting at the Limelight after work. Do you want to join us? Yeah, sounds good, but I'll be a little late. I have an errand to run after work. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Okay. Be good. Okay. Please be good. Stay. Stay. I'll be back. How may I help you? I hope so. I found this dog. Well, she sort of found me, really. I was going to leave her in the park, but that didn't seem right. >> Oh, you did the right thing. This is our fifth lost dog today. Uh Bill, you mind taking this dog back to the kennel? I've driven past her a lot, but I've never had a reason to stop. Well, come on. Follow me. I'll show you around. Don't forget your sash. Now, besides all the stray animals, a lot of people just drop their pets off because they don't want them anymore. I never realized there were so many dogs here. Oh, not just dogs, but all the stray and unwanted cats. There are just too many animals and not enough responsible pet owners. You know, we'll be lucky if the owners come to claim the ones that are lost. If they don't, all we can do is try to place some of them in new homes. It's not their fault. It's all the people who allow their pets to wander through the neighborhood, letting them breed and produce more unwanted pets. Who end up here. That's right. Now, this dog you've got, I bet she'd make a great pet. Oh, well, I haven't owned a dog since I was a child. Chances are she'll be here a while if the owners don't come to claim her. Let me know if you're interested. A dog? Nah. Hi. Oh, hi. Hi. Well, did you get your errand taken care of? Yeah, kind of cute, really, but filthy. Hi. >> Hi. I'll have the usual. You aren't really thinking of taking him in, are you? No, hey, this sounds kind of interesting. Yeah, who's the lucky guy? No, no, this dog. I almost ran her over this morning. I just dropped her off at the shelter. Oh, so you were thinking of taking her in? Maybe. What do you think? You'll have to decide for yourself. There's going to be some changes to your lifestyle which you'll have to accept. Yeah, but some are pretty neat. Oh, yeah. Since I got my cats, I've always got company. They love to play and they're always getting into mischief. Sounds like fun. I remember playing for hours with my dog when I was a kid. Maybe I ought to get that little dog at the shelter. You know, she wouldn't cost much if I got her there. Just spaying and shots. Right. >> All right. What? Let me draw you a picture of this free animal you're considering. Food, tags, a fenced yard, entertainment, kennel fees, vet fees, health and beauty aids, repairs. Mhm. And then there's insurance, uh special apartment deposits, obedience schools, and I have to feed and take care of him even on days when I don't feel well. Uh-oh. No such thing as a free lunch, right? Or a free dog. There are a few other things you ought to think about, too. Well, a new addition to all your furniture and carpet, clothes. Oh, and maybe you're at a great party and you meet this really neat guy. You say you want to stay a little while, but you know your dog is sitting by the door waiting to go outside. You make it sound like it would be less trouble taking care of a baby. If it's so tough, why have a pet at all? Because they love us and we love them. They're fantastic companions. Yeah, I love being with my cats. Sometimes I think they're the only ones who can make me relax without even trying. You wouldn't believe the guys I've met at obedience training classes and walking my dog. I've even made some good friends just because we have something in common right away. Excuse me. I couldn't help overhearing. It may sound corny to you, but I get a real feeling of being loved and accepted by my dog. She loves to go camping just like we do. Claire and I got an older dog and she's been just terrific to us. We feel good that we saved her life by getting her to shelter. And we really enjoy her company. That's right. A pet gives your life a a sense of purpose that goes beyond your office work and professional life. Still a dog. I have to think this one over. Time for your hot chocolate now. Oh, hi. Oh, hey. >> Come on. Hey guys. Come on. Hi. Hi. Well, hello there. Hi. Uh-oh, looks like you found a friend here. How long have you had this pooch? 3 years? >> 3 years. Yeah, last yeah, May it was. I see you walking him a lot. He seems really well-behaved. Oh, he is. He's a good dog. And we try to get him out about two or three times a day. >> Oh, yeah, he helps keep us in shape. Little aerobics instructor. Oh, what I want to do follow me. Well, does he follow a regular schedule? Oh, we try to. We get him out about 7:30 before we go to work. >> Right, 7:30 morning, noon, we take turns coming home to to get him out. >> And about 6:00, we try to get him out by 6:00 so we can get back in time for the news. Network news. It's big network news fan. Yeah, and he has got a timer built right in. He knows right when it's dinner time. Of course, so does Kurt. Yeah, thanks. If it wasn't for the microwave, I wouldn't eat at all. >> Ooh. So, you uh you interested in getting a dog? Well, I don't know. Oh, you really will like that. You really will. But you one thing you got to remember now, dog is not an appliance and it's alive and and it's always going to be there with his >> I know. He needs a lot of attention. He really loves the walks we take him on and these apartments are small. You got to get him out and let him run. There's no commercial breaks with a dog. Okay. Well, thanks. Well, good luck. Maybe we'll see you and your dog around. We'll let you know. Come on, it's time for his cartoon. All right. Come on, Teddy. Bye. Bye-bye. Hi. I brought a dog in the other >> Oh, yeah. She's still here, isn't she? >> Oh, sure. Sure. You know, I'm glad you came back. Not everybody does. I'd like to take another look at her. All right. Bill will take you back. Bill? You know, I've been a volunteer here for about 5 years. And I see people bring their pets in all the time. They always say, "You'll find him a good home, won't you?" Well, we try. But with so many, it's hard. Not doing much jaywalking these days, are we? You know, I feel kind of awkward asking you this, but you wouldn't be interested in moving in with me, would you? I can try to make you feel like it's your place, too, and I'll even arrange my schedule so you can get out and about. Would you like that? Hey, you've got to keep your part of the bargain. That your wandering days are over. Okay? So, what do you think? Well, I think I'll take her home with me. I thought you'd feel that way. The receptionist has an application for you to fill out up front. I'll bring her up. That's fine. I also have a video on caring for your pet I want you to view within the next few minutes. Now, this spay/neuter agreement form states that you'll have the dog sterilized within the next 2 weeks, and that you'll pre-pay for it at the time of adoption. Will there be any other charges? Just a small adoption fee. Now, this kit contains pet care information, Humane Society pamphlet, local animal laws brochure, and information on how to get the necessary license tags. Okay. Anything else? I also recommend you look over this list of local veterinarians. We have an arrangement with several area vets who examine our adopted animals and start them on preventive shots. You can also discuss the right time to have her spayed. By the way, have you given any thought to what you're going to name her? Hello, I'm Dr. Newton. Hi, I'm Cindy and this is Homer. Homer, eh? Been on any Odysseys lately? Actually, I named her Homer because I want her to stay at home. Oh, spaying will help take care of that. Sterilized pets have less desire to roam and they're also more gentle and affection. About spaying, won't that kind of make her fat and lazy? No, she'll get fat and lazy if you overfeed her or don't let her exercise. Once she's spayed, there'll also be less chance of her developing cancer. The shelter said you could also help with license procedures. Oh, yes. Here's an application. I'll give her rabies shot. Then you just send in your check with this application and the copy of the rabies certificate for the license. Now, about the spaying, what time would you like to pick her up tomorrow? About this time would be good. See you tomorrow, Homer. Homer! Homer! Hi, Homer. Hey, Homer. Hey, Homer. Here she is. Hey, Homer. Oh. Come on, let them see you. Yeah. Come and play with me. Come. Can I shake your paw? Good baby. >> I didn't look closely at the locations, but Walter J. Klein was uh productions was based in uh Charlotte, North Carolina. And uh a lot of times they shot and used actors from that the area. Okay. Uh What do we got? Yeah, let's do this. Um So, I have said in the past and I've shown in the past films, commercials, TV commercials from a project that I did for Duke University's AdViews project. Uh and these This is when I did like 10,000 TV commercials. And uh it was a big effort. It was a lot of work. And uh but I'm happy that I did it. I'm happy that I gave access to all this material. Which you can see either on their site, uh at Duke's site, or uh on Internet Archive. And so, there are a bunch of commercials there. And so, uh periodically I show ones that are themed. Uh just like I think was that earlier this week? I showed uh all the uh cavity creeps Crest commercials and so also some other uh films about uh American Dental Association. So this is all Gaines dog food. But I'm not showing I don't think I'm showing any Gravy Train. That's a separate thing. Um this is all other products and I have some older ones from the '60s and then I have some newer ones uh from the '70s. But uh And hopefully there's no duplication. There might be a couple ads duplicated in here, but um what I like about these films and is also very frustrating about them is uh that these commercials are appealing to guilt the owners. It's like your dog gives you so much. Like why don't you give in return? Why don't you show your real love by uh giving your finicky dog you know, these fake meat looking or fake cheese looking uh products. Uh so that's the gist of this. Uh so enjoy. Robbie's always wanted to feed his dog, but he couldn't until now. His mama got him this uh Rally. It's just out. It's a new kind of dog food, and it comes in this new kind of can. See, he just pulls a string, and there's no can opener or spoons to wash or anything. And he pours out a capful, and uh boom, it's all done. He's only 2-years-old. That capful is as much of a meal as a regular 1-lb can. So, in Rally, there's as many meals as in six regular cans of dog food. Gee, he has more trouble opening the darn door than he does the dog food. Here comes Mister. He loves this Rally. It's It's moist and tender. Look, he's really cleaning house. And so they did a bunch of advertising and sponsored a bunch of Andy Griffith shows, which is why uh Don Knotts is featured uh as not as Barney Fife, although I think in some of the commercials he does show up as Barney Fife. But um there's also other ones, Post cereals The Danny Kaye show, um Dick Van Dyke show, people, etc. So, there you go. I hope everybody has a great weekend. And slowly this space uh that I'm in will be populated with equipment um and will allow me to do live shows from here, and we'll be able to go, pull films from downstairs in the film vault, and bring them upstairs and scan them live like we used to do. Um if you like what you saw today or at least like what we do or roughly the rough idea of what we do hit the thumbs up. Hit the like, even if you've done it recently. It always helps. Uh, you can also donate via the super thanks button or go to ko-fi.com/avgeeks or patreon.com/avgeeks. Those are great ways to support us. Um, but otherwise, it's great to see everybody.
