e hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and I'm inside cuz it's gray and cold and rainy outside uh which is on point for uh the fall here in North Carolina um so won't be any squirrels today but uh yeah Welcome to our lunchtime streaming show and we watch old 60mm films and again traditionally we're at the archive but the archive is undergoing some renovation and so there's a lot of construction noise Etc and um so we're at my house which you've seen before if you've been watching the show uh today we're going to talk about telephones uh here are some commercials enjoy area code 314 St Louis Missouri on the banks of the Mississippi it's here on the way North from New Orleans that the blues stayed for Good Sports and breweries cereals and chemicals and the arch the Gateway [Music] Arch even today when it's all finished you look at it and you say to yourself it couldn't be done but there it is the Gateway to the West 630 ft of stainless steel just standing there tall and proud and you can even ride up one side and down the other that's a trip you really ought to take but please phone ahead for your rooms before you head for the arch the park can be mighty [Music] cold area code 603 Mount Washington New Hampshire the highest mountain in the eastern part of the country and it's the home of the world's first Cog Railway back in 1869 when the railway was first built a lot of folks said it couldn't be done but it was round trip up Mount Washington on the Cog Railway takes about 2 hours the incline Westward and from San Francisco East lines from east and west meet in Utah the year 1915 the minimum rate on a call from New York to San Francisco in 1915 [Music] $20.70 years pass phone service expands and long-distance rates drop dramatically the minimum rate for a coast to coast call by 1920 was $8 $5 1927 $5.50 1940 [Music] $3 by 1963 $1 plus tax now in 1970 the minimum is70 cents plus tax Coast to Coast on calls you dial yourself on weekends. 70 cents for a 3-minute call from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Saturday and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday in 1915 $20.70 in 1970. 70 cents plus tax they said it couldn't be done but it was they said it couldn't be done but they did it um yeah like the whole aspect of long distance and then in the 99s when you could actually choose who would provide your long distance and then pay for a plan accordingly and then how that changed into a cell phone planned and it's it's crazy how radically different it is now than it was when I started you know using a phone as an adult like back in the 80s all right so lots of um phone propaganda and some of those ads the begin getting the one like be sure to call um about the St Louis Arch because the Park's mighty cold what wait what is this an ad for what uh anyways here is uh world at your call enjoy here is the world a world of Mighty oceans winding Rivers towering mountains drifting deserts and the world is at your fingertips speak and your voice spans oceans and continents with the speed of light just a moment I I'll have to minut sir I connect you chicag calling London write on a telegraph blank and your words appear by Modern Magic on paper thousands of miles away yes it is hard to realize that a century has pass since Samuel moris invented the telegraph in 1844 early equipment was crude and handmade but telegraphy made rapid progress as the years went by and went forward with America's expanding Frontiers today Western Union operates a vast network of 2 million miles of wire Furnishing Swift reliable communication Financial quotations are transmitted from exchanges in key cities to ticker tape receivers in broker offices throughout the United States Cuba and in Canada each year many millions of money orders ranging from small sums to thousands of dollars go over the telegraph wires even the nation's time depends upon wire signals from the official Naval Observatory day and night in editorial offices everywhere teletype machines bring in the news of the world for millions of readers and every year more than 200 million telegrams passed through the hands of operators in the traffic department here in this operating room hundreds of girls receive and transmit messages on batteries of teleprinters and Multiplex machines those with ability and experience may be promoted to become supervisors on the floor or instructors in the schools which Western Union maintains in many cities here the trainees learn by practicing on actual equipment generally a high school education is desirable the tele pritter keyboard is similar to a typewriter as the keys are punched the distant receiver records each letter on a moving paper tape an operator removes the tape and gums it to the familiar yellow blanks the letters NL on this tape identify the message as a night letter the operator must know how to handle the various classifications such as Day letter night letter deferred cable and special listings to develop a traine into a competent operator of the tele printer and Multiplex machines requires from 2 to 3 months job opportunities for men are found in the maintenance of all transmission equipment and in the operation of the relay offices in the carrier system Department trained technicians maintain equipment that transmits hundreds of messages over a single pair of wires in the experimental Laboratories College trained research Engineers work constantly to find new methods and techniques to provide quicker service one of these developments is Radio beam telegraphy transmitting 1,40 messages in each Direction simultaneously through a series of high Towers another is the faim telegram whereby a written message is dropped into a transmitter and automatically reproduced by a receiver men also are needed at the switchboards which control circuits between offices and in supervision of departments as well as general executive positions typical of these is the traffic manager who is responsible for the efficient dispatch of all messages through the traffic department construction of New Branch offices and maintenance of existing buildings and properties is the function of the plant Department new equipment is installed and wired by equipment men and installation experts from this department tele printers and Multiplex machines are in constant use and require inspection by trained testing and regulating men so that sudden breakdowns may be avoided in the commercial Department are handled most transactions with a public in addition this department employs about 15,000 Messengers to pick up and deliver messages here excellent opportunities are provided for young men to acquire business training because of the contacts established while delivering messages more than a million prominent businessmen began their careers as Western Union Messengers the scope of the modern Telegraph and cable is worldwide in America alone 30,000 Branch off offices and agencies offer many opportunities for managers operators repairmen and other trained Personnel to render efficient service to the public it's a far cry from present-day Telegraph facilities the early beginnings of the 19th century similarly it's a far cry from the first telephone developed by Alexander Bell in 1875 in the early days switchboards were operated by men and service was crude today modern facilities handle more than 100 million calls every 24 hours these calls flow at the rate of 1,000 per second through a telephone network using enough wire to string a line to the sun more than 90 million miles away this tremendous system provides job opportunities for half a million employees with a wide range of interest and capacities from outdoor work with field Crews to intricate research work in the experimental laboratory to study these job opportunities let's imagine that the town of Homeville is to receive a new and larger telephone exchange first the engineering department prepares the plans for the buildings and transmission systems and arranges for plant construction much of this technical work requires specialized training then skilled Craftsmen build lines install equipment and maintain it in operating order after construction is completed a large number of operators are brought in to staff the switchboard under the guidance of Supervisors these operators have been trained to provide courteous and Speedy service to be an operator an applicant must have a clear voice normal hearing and eyesight a high school education is an advantage about 225,000 operators the most important factor in efficient exchange service are employed by all companies they also handle all longdistance and special calls even in communities served by dial telephone and automatic systems many operators are required for information and special service with the traffic Personnel on hand the new home bille exchange is ready for fullscale operation a clerical force is organized for computing charges for service preparing and mailing bills and collecting the money as well as all other office work costs and income are analyzed and statistics prepared for administrative purposes now the new Homeville exchange is a unit of the worldwide telephone Network to supply this far-flung network with the latest improvements research engineers in Laboratories constantly experiment to discover new techniques new materials and quicker methods of production the dial tell telephone and automatic switchboard are among the better known accomplishments of these skilled Engineers these are men who must possess the creative mind and an everlastingly curious approach in addition they are highly trained in scientific and Technical Fields while a college education is helpful a young man or woman can start in the telephone or Telegraph Industries after graduation from high school and work his or her way up for Tech techical work an understanding of mechanical drawing Elementary electricity physics and Mathematics is very important all new employees in these industries are trained right on the job or in company schools to perform specific tasks one of these special jobs is that of the lineman his duty is to help build new lines and repair those which have been damaged in the spring and summer he fights storms of rain and wind in the twinter there is ice snow and freezing Gales opportunities in all jobs for promotion are plentiful because most companies prefer to advance their own Personnel whenever possible dependability is an important factor in judging an applicant's aptitude and just as the public depends on prompt service and communication the Telegraph and telephone companies in turn must depend upon reliable capable employees to keep these nerve systems of our social and economic life functioning properly throughout the country men and women can find excellent job opportunities in the Twin fields of wire communication these are jobs with stable employment for a wide range of aptitudes and Ambitions if you are the sort of person who finds satisfaction in contributing to the service of other people everywhere than telephone or Telegraph communication may become your life [Music] work Burton Holmes so Burton Holmes uh was a filmmaker who did a lot of travels in the early 20th century and uh did the these kind of travel LS initially but then uh branched out did other things and this was that series your life work is one of them um excuse me see this is I shouldn't be having uh Seltzer during my show because it makes me all Burpy I apologize for that um but uh this next film is great because it talks about telephone courtesy and uh uh I think you know this is required viewing how you answer the phone it doesn't talk about what you do on a phone that is in the middle of the public as far as etiquette with that or answering your phone while you're visiting with people but uh it's a stab in the right direction this is made for businesses so this is telephone courtesy enjoy quick maybe and I'm too busy to argue about it yeah that that dope's right over here if great are you ready for lunch sure Ted as soon as I take care of one more telephone call could be in any time now here sit down make yourself comfortable ah thanks cigarette sure well Ted it's good to see you again say what sort of magic do you work around here same old Ted always talking in riddles what do you mean magic I know who dny you must have something to lure that gal here the one who runs your switchboard out there oh you mean Miss Tanner I don't know what her name is but that girl sure knows how to handle a switchboard y she's good all right still the master of understatement aren't you Henry yeah she's good all right where did you get her she's the same operator we've had all along yeah H sounds like you've been impressed you know what I think I'll kidnap her what for what for cause telephone habits in my office could stand a shot in the arm that's what for well aren't you worried about my wanting your gal look Ted just stealing my switchboard operator won't solve your telephone problems or anybody else's for that matter that's all says who my switchboard operator sounds good and is good but the rest of my organization is good too they just telephone wise telephone wise what's the magic formula look I told you before there's no magic at all it's very simple it all started several months ago when I was very anxious to get to the office early one morning had an important business conference coming up a miserable day for my car to break down of course with the rain all the taxis were taken so about the only thing to do was call the office oh why don't they hello well it's about time get me Bill Johnson who what do you want I said get me Bill Johnson Bill Johnson oh just a minute uh I didn't get the name who' you want Mr William C Johnson Johnson of the accounting department and don't take all day oh Johnson I'll see if he's in what do you mean I'll see if he's in don't you know Johnson in or isn't he oh is this Mr Burton yes well yes sir I'll get Johnson I mean I'll get Mr Johnson right away yes sir well it was a struggle but I finally got Johnson and he took care of the arrangements for the conference but I started thinking things over it's funny always when I called before I was treated like a king but this time she didn't recognize my voice at first he was pretty indifferent disinterested I began doing a little supposing supposing all telephone calls at the office particularly customers got kicked around H wonder if that could have anything to do with our sales dropping off with universal maybe Acme didn't call back last week because yeah right then and there I decided to look into this telephone situation at the office my eyes and ears got a real workout thoughtless telephone habits all over the place although my employeers didn't realize it for example customers were kept waiting forever it seemed hello hello hello this from Burton Supply Company I just wanted to check with you about their or some garbled their conversation so much that even I couldn't understand them let alone the customer at the other end of the line ahead with it now if we don't have these two things by the afternoon I wish you check back with me yours of the fourth receive comma and subsequent orders will be shipped commensurate with existing stocks pursuant to our agreement as of the 12th period here to for we had adhered to our strict policy as outlined in our previous letter hello hello H guess say hung up well couldn't have been very important now let's see well it didn't take much looking around my office to see we had a plain case of bad telephone manners it began to worry me something ought to be done but I was no expert on Telephone manners the telephone company H why I must have passed this building a thousand times never entered my head to go in but why not maybe they could help got nothing to lose what I mean mean maybe they could help of course they could they'd feel that's part of their job I told them my story then I asked if I could borrow their ideas of good telephone manners I got some booklets on Telephone courtesy and a representative from the telephone company came over to look around the office he noticed a lot of thoughtless habits I had missed including some of my own and then knowing what was wrong I had confidence to go ahead so you picked up a lot of pamphlets and stuff and put one in each pay Envelope as a surprise oh Ted I'm serious as soon as I knew what the trouble was I thought the best way to convince my people of proper telephone usage and the dividends it pays was to show them so I put on a telephone show and now you're in the show business Henry Burton the poor man cees will beat a mill joke all you want to Ted but that show got results held it in the stock room actually anybody could put on a show like mine with a few desks and a couple of telephones I called in my people and started with an important point which they hadn't realized in a business like ours telephoning is as important as personal visits of our salesman good habits please our customers bad habits only irritate them telephone courtesy not only makes work easier it makes our customers feel welcome and impresses them that we're glad to do business with them let's look at it this way way the telephone is meant to work for us yes that's right work for us the important thing is knowing how to put it to work properly good telephone manners aren't difficult they're easy and natural let's run through a few fundamentals first off when you're making a call be sure you have the right number now if you're not sure look it up in your directory or your list of frequently called numbers saves loss of your time avoids wrong numbers and prevents the possibility of disturbing someone who is not at all interested in your call now when you're going to dial a number wait for the dial tone you're all familiar with it it's the hum you hear in the receiver like this this tone is the same as the operator saying number please it tells you the equipment is ready to handle your call now if you start dialing before you hear that hum you'll either get the wrong number or no number at all so wait for the dial tone it's another timesaver when it's necessary to Signal the operator do it this way a definite Rhythm if you pump up and down impatiently like this about the only thing you're likely to get is high blood pressure it may sound queer me telling you how to talk over the telephone but it's surprising how many of us make careless mistakes here's what I mean speak clearly in a conversational tone like this directly into the mouthpiece try to avoid talking too fast and by all means never talk with anything in your mouth or you'll sound as if you have a mouth full of mush Cel department store send me over four pre-fabricated houses right away well you get the idea it's the same with pipe chewing gum or cigarettes they clutter up your speech and make you hard to be understood and worst of all it's very rude let's take an incoming call all the way through from beginning to end of course it's just common sense to be ready for a call at all times pad and pencil go with the telephone just as cheese goes with apple pie if you have these handy you won't have to hunt all over the place for something to write on when you're in the middle of a call and by the way it's a good habit to take notes on telephone conversations because they'll serve as reminders ERS for you now we're ready for an incoming call answer your telephone promptly before the second ring if possible if your phone rings on and on six or eight times the caller can easily get the idea that we're not interested in his call besides you all know how that endless ringing of somebody else's phone disturbs you then answer by identifying yourself and the office if necessary don't just say hello it's old fashion that wastes time now you all know what I [Applause] mean hello oh hello who's calling well what number is this well what number are you calling well I'm calling your number oh is that you Myrtle yes who's that horten yes this is our T oh hello no well you you see what I mean now the right way to answer your telephone is well you've all noticed how the Acme people handle their calls credit department Mr Stevens Mr Andrew's office Miss Carter is speaking just like that and I know you've seen it happen many many times that's the quickest way to let the customer know who's answering and how to continue his conversation but no matter whose phone you're answering your own or anybody else's always make your customer feel that you're interested in his call be obliging and polite then when you're sure he's finished bring the conversation to a definite courteous close like this yes that's fine thanks for calling Mr Frisbee goodbye a Pleasant thank you goodbye is much better than hanging up maybe while the other party is still talking or listening it's just being considerate oh yes and when you hang up put the telephone securely on its base making sure it rests squarely on the Cradle see that there are no books or other objects in the way you'd be surprised how these suggestions for proper telephone usage add up to make your working day more enjoyable is there anything special for longdistance car Mr Burton the same simple rules apply however there's one thing particularly important for out of town calling if for any reason your call doesn't go through right away stay near your telephone until it does go through thank you if you must leave your office let the operator know where you can be reached and when you expect to be back or leave a note by your telephone explaining where you are like this making a habit of telling a switchboard operator where you are is a good idea whether you expect to call or not then she won't have to hunt all over the place for you when you're out of your office now here's a Time saer Keep information handy so you won't irritate customers by keeping them waiting while you leave the telephone and work yourself into a lather hoping to find what you're looking for well that might be a good system Mr Burton but I can't possibly pile 15 or 20 filing cabinets on my desk just for telephone calls it's quite possible you can't have everything at your fingertips but here's how to handle a call like that all right Mr wh side if you'll help me out we'll show them Burton Whiteside of universal calling could you give me the complete figures on our last year's purchases be glad to Mr Whiteside but that'll take a few minutes you prefer to wait or shall I call you back well I am pretty busy at the moment call me back please as soon as I have the figures your number is Dawson 81237 Dawson 81237 yes thank you goodbye goodbye when a customer calls wanting detailed information that takes you away from the telephone ask him if he prefers to wait or be called back then be sure you have his correct telephone number all of this makes it easier for you and serves our customers better now this next may seem far fetched but it's really quite a serious time and energy waster Miss Barkley and Mrs Cary please thank you Mr B side that'll be all the importance of answering your own telephone yourself is well see for yourself yes sir get me Mr Blackwell at acne yes sir AC me give me Mr Blackwell who's calling what difference does it make who's calling give me Mr Blackwell I have to know who's calling Mr Burton's calling we put Mr Burton on and I'll connect you no you put Mr Blackwell on first well who does Mr Burton think he is and who does Mr Blackwell think he is now listen here you put him on the line right sister your Mr Burton Isn't So High all right all right all right girls we're convinced thank you very very much so you see it is pretty obvious that answering your own telephone in person is a good habit and now miss Boyd we're ready for you miss Boyd will help me show you how you can get gray hair in one easy lesson through the irritating practice of being transferred from one office to another this boy that's about it we're going to need all those figures immediately you're speaking to the wrong Department ma'am how's that I said you're speaking with the wrong Department I'll transfer you to you mean I'll have to explain this again the whole routine that's right Mr Williams handles things like that oh all right put him on now if you'll imagine it's 20 minutes later we'll see how Miss Boyd is making out but I've already explained what I want to Mr Marshall and Mr Thomas and Mr Green you're not the one either no that's Mr Wilbur's problem he may be back later call in after all this mix up call again listen I wouldn't call your place if thank you Miss Boyd [Applause] all of that heartbreaking struggle can be avoided if you can't handle a call yourself make sure you transfer your customer to the proper department or office like this I'm sorry Mrs Maxwell but Mr Johnson will handle that for you would you care to speak with him I'll be glad to have your call transferred it's just as easy as that just be sure your caller is transferred to the right party it saves so much time and energy for for you and the customer now the most important consideration of telephoning how your voice sounds on the other end of the line every time you talk on the telephone the customer has some kind of mental picture of you now if your voice personality is dull and lifeless like this alow in his imagination you'll probably look like this and the customer will feel you just aren't interested in his call or that you work for a business that something close to this one of the best ways to make a good impression on a caller is to speak with a smile in your voice an interested voice combined with proper telephone usage is like offering a warm handshake over the phone and with it you'll appear like this to your callers our business more like this just by a sparkle in your voice something like this accounting department Mr Stevens when the show was over the comments were interesting you know the boss said a mouthful that stuff will save a lot of wear and tear on the customers yeah and on poor little me too sounds as easy as as walking yeah I know yes sir Ted that show got us off on the right foot sounds reasonable but did the show alone do the trick for instance did it change your switchboard operator into a mild sensation well that was part of it the rest was making sure she had a chance to be a switchboard operator how could I expect her to be a mild sensation as you call it with typing and filing and receptionist duties in addition to her switchboard the girl had too much to do a PBX instructor from the telephone company came over to study Miss Tanner's situation then her work was arranged so she could devote her attention exclusively to the switchboard now she's a welcoming committee of one for incoming or outgoing calls her appeal is evident in just a few words Burton Supply Company Mr Wilson yes he is just a moment Burton Supply Company the shipping room I'll connect you right away there you are sir and by the way a business that's telephone wise not only treats the callers right but makes sure the customers have its telephone address well now I've heard everything what is this mysterious telephone address nothing mysterious the telephone number of an office is just as important as the street number so I have it printed where it can't be missed on our letter heads and Bill forms even on our business cards you see that's our telephone address well I'll say that that looks like a good idea may sound like I'm making a big issue out of a little thing but we have found the telephone courtesy is made up of a lot of little things it's a Cooperative effort by all of us in the office that's why you won't solve your problems just by stealing my switchboard operator beginning to make sense all right our organization is doing a better telephone job now because it's easier and we enjoy it we're working as a team I see what you mean Henry but doesn't the gang forget I mean well you know slip back into the old habits occasionally sometimes they do yes naturally my show wasn't enough to cure old habits so I just followed through with what I started regular check checkups and suggestions it wasn't long though till the simple easy things that make up telephone courtesy prompt attention thoughtful consideration effective action on our customers calls became second nature with us ah there it is that must be my longdistance call excuse me Ted sure Burton yes I'm ready and Ted to help keep us from slipping back into Old Habits we have this reminder in front of us all the time [Music] is that the Golden Rule as applied to telephones telephone as you'd be telephone to um telephoning as a verb uh yeah okay what a great so I love these uh films that set up these scenarios of misbehavior and you get to see a lot of misbehavior um it's a lot of fun so this uh next film is uh I think this is also a training film and this uh this is for um a potential very cheap Workforce to hello is this M1 yes operator you you have have the right number I'm just checking your telephone oh yes the telephone has been working very pooll pooll come up in the table where I can keep track oh yes operator our telephone has been working very come on up on the table yes op I'm having a little trouble operator uh yes the uh B no the operator isn't under the table her voice is coming over the wire is something wrong with the wire oh no no operator I wasn't speaking to you I I was just talking talking to PO the telephone has been working very proo what are you doing now oh yes yes operator uh I was Pau come back here you're going to fall oh no operator I wasn't talking to you I was talking to poo poo be careful you're going to fall operator I'm going to have to call you back Poo's in a little trouble here pero now be careful my goodness poo there's no need for all this excitement there's no one under the table and when someone is talking over the telephone it's not polite to disturb them or to make noise no this no one under there now I know you won't do it again so now I'll explain to you all about a telephone oh that was a lot of excitement wasn't it well now yes I think you can see from there and uh here is the telephone now as I said we use the telephone to talk to people we have to call them first and I'll show you how it's done we lift the receiver carefully from his cradle and now if you get close enough to it you'll hear a little hum we call that the dial tone well you can hear it well that's funny you're listening to the wrong end yeah oh that's right oh you hear it better there all right well now that we hear the hum we know that it's time to dial everybody has a number on his telephone so when you want to call you dial that number but when you want to call Operator you dial zero that's who I'm calling now operator oh hello operator this is main1 1212 I'm sorry about the mixup we had pero is a puppet and didn't know where your voice was coming from so would you say hello to him please hello proo speak to him again operator I think proo is a nice name oh he's a little bashful don't you think p is a nice name p what do you look like P I'll bet you're a cute little puet oh pero the operator now why don't you ask to me I don't think you're being very polite go ahead say Hello Operator I'm afraid pero so bashful he hasn't been very polite oh it's perfectly all right I understand goodbye well goodbye operator you've been very nice Goodbye Oh oh now pero the operator was so nice and you wouldn't say hello I don't think that was very what well you want to call someone well if you're going to be too bashful how are you going to all right you can make a call yes and and you always ask permission first so someone older can help you you know whom you're going to call and you know your number you do all right well first we take the receipt off the Cradle very carefully and we listen for the dial tone here it there yes if you yes that's the right answer you heard it well then that means it's ready and we're ready to dial all right yes I'm I'm I'm going to I'm going to help you now here is huh will you want me to close my eyes all right I wonder whom Theo is going to call I wonder operator oh proo calls the Operator Operator pero is too bashful to say to say hello oh so he's saying goodbye such a polite puppet yes he is that oh operator I think Pur likes you very much oh I'm so glad he's such a nice little pupp well we both say goodbye operator goodbye goodbye thank you well wasn't the operator nice now F you know Tom mentioned in the uh comments any excuse for me to show a p film I love pero so much holy cow um but uh no I actually there were some other films that I found that made me want to show uh do show films about phones today um but I was like oh right pero gotta put that in um so that is one of my uh guilty pleasures is watching that puppet and I think I found I actually found a color Puro it's not in my collection uh but it now I'm going to add it to my list my want list to try to find and I don't think it's the same uh format I think it's it's very different and you actually get to see the Puppeteer uh I think these were actually shown on television uh back in the day uh in California and uh given the format but love it anyways thanks so much for tuning in today very much appreciate
