oh wow that is incredibly frustrating um so uh I use a couple of ways to get to you one is via restream or one is OB s which is what I use to play the videos and then to switch between me and videos Etc then I use restream to propagate it to different places and restream recently changed how they're doing stuff and it's a pain in the butt and it's going live when it really shouldn't be Etc uh just a pain regardless of that I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm films in in spite of new technologies and newer Technologies which just confound and make things more difficult anyways so let's uh jump into it um let's uh learn about some aqua frolics enjoy here's an aqua prodct that only a seal can enjoy and enjoy is the word they're really having fun because if there's anything a seal likes besides going fishing it's a chance to show off just give them an audience a chance to perform and some Applause and no hurdle is too high to stop them nobody ever trained a ppit but judging by their ability to stand on their tails they have possibilities they're friendly too and don't even resent people who crowd in among them it's plain to see why saltwater fishermen hate to see porpuses appear they can ruin fishing nobody feeds this fellow in fact these swimmers are a little afraid they might feed him tropical waters spawn big denisons of the deep such as a giant sea turtle or the ray of which some species can inflict a dangerous wound with a sharp spine-like Stinger near the base of the tail here's something even fish can't do a basketball game underwater and it's a breathlessly exciting game especially in a struggle for the ball because the player who runs out of breath runs out of luck she scored that one now the ball is in play again and while they can't bounce a dribble they can float one and there's another basket her side wins anything can happen in Wakulla Springs Florida where the water is so clear the moov cameraman is forever thinking up new stunts this time it's a turkey dinner on the bottom of the lake but you haven't seen anything yet this time the cameraman asks you to believe too much a sort of pipe dream and after an underwater banquet it's time for a little fresh air [Music] more Aqua frolics and the more the merrier with a fast motorboat but it's well to know how to swim water skis offer a fine means of Frolic for the expert with real speed essential to keep those skimmers on top of the water imagine doing this even on snow skis she's Towing him to a real test for here's a stunt few experts have ever accomplished and this particular expert is no exception but one man's defeat is another man's Victory watch him just to prove it wasn't an accident he makes it look just like another Aqua frolic the cameraman gets an unusual shot and here's the result just to show what a breaking wave can do to a small boat over it goes but here's a boat that can take it if they can just get past the breakers this time they fail to make it and the Big Surf Boat is turned around and driven back to the beach again another try watch it leap half out of the water they are winning this time and now in green water they're safe that's the trick just get through the breakers and there's nothing to it Aqua frolics in the Rapid River in Maine attract the Daredevils it's a thrilling test of skill in fast water and it's a master of the sport who gets through some of the Rapids without [Music] disaster that fellow's in trouble there he goes it's wicked water in this part of the river and few have ever gone through it right side up the river always seems to win this game from Maine to Florida somebody is certain to be looking for a new thrill afloat and the battle of the toboggans behind a speeding motorboat is a novel variation of aquaplaning the idea is to upset the other crowd they almost [Applause] succeed there they go and that's what's known as the battle of the toboggans of all the fun of float there's nothing so insane as the racing puddle jumpers no rules no disqualifications and they get away with anything even a shortcut across country is okay if he had wings he'd take off anything is can do here's an obstacle race just warming up nothing is really any obstacle here here they come to the finish and it's just what might be expected of the puddle jumpers hi diving into a pool is one thing but from a 200t cliff that is something else these Mexican swimmers would think nothing of doing a Swan Dive Where Angels would fear to fly the slightest miscalculation and he'd have his last headache High divers at carnivals are paid to do this but these fellows do it just for fun I guess there I was expecting there be more of a outro there um so yeah strung together a bunch of uh newsreal footage of uh various water related things my favorite of course being Thanksgiving dinner underwater it's really kind of great all right um I don't think we showed this I I should check so I maintain a like a spreadsheet of um what we've watched and we have not watched this one um this is uh brought To Us by the textile industry cir probably uh late 40s I think this is postwar but uh this is threads of Technology wait maybe we did see this because we talked about jacard looms let me look and see did we talk about it did we show it um answer in the quotes uh in the meantime I will watch something else we'll watch another thing um uguay we have not watched this enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] what is the look of Uruguay it meets the eye placidly comfortably as if it were made partly of Ohio partly of our Western Cattle and sheep country nothing spectacular the other countries of South America have all the mountains all the deserts all all the jungle Uruguay has none of these but nearly all of its land is [Music] useful southeast of Miami Florida about 5,000 mil lies Uruguay it is only one fourth larger than Florida it is the smallest of all the South American countries it is wedged in between two big neighbors Brazil to the north and Argentina to the South and West the Uruguay River and the great arm of the Sea called the Rio de La Plata separate Uruguay from Argentina and on the shore of the Plata is Monto Vio Uruguay's capital it is one of the world's great seaports mono is modern it is a 100 years younger than New York or Boston there are few reminders of col Days In Mono but plenty of evidence that this is the chief city of a dynamic and Progressive country of ugu's 2 million people about onethird live here in the capital mono is modern but one old tradition thrives each year there is a gathering of La cogia Society to pay tribute to that key man in Uruguay's past and present the gouto the [Music] cowboy these are cattl men some are Ranch owners or Executives some are workers from the ranches the whole Affair is the city's tribute to the countryside on which it so greatly Depends for in uguay as truly as in Argentina the GAO is the symbol of an important part of the nation's [Music] life another symbol Lara mono's tribute to Uruguay's Pioneers from Spain and Italy they came and drove their covered wagons into the back country along the Plata they came with their goods their families and with their love of the soil today their descendants are still working these Pleasant farmlands introduction of modern methods has enabled Uruguay to increase its agricultural output the climate is temperate the rainfall is dependable and in the south in the regions nearest the rivers the soil is good these Farm Workers are drinking mate to the true Uruguayan life would be unendurable without this tea likee Brew one of the surprising things about ugua one of the unique things is that the national minimum wage law and the 8h hour day apply to Farm Workers agriculture claims only a small share not more than 10% of the country's usable land but Uruguay feeds itself and even exports a part of its [Music] crops the rivers give Uruguay an easy way of starting farm products barley oats corn wheat Lin seed toward foreign markets but the total is small compared to the export of wool meats and hies from 80 to 90% of all Uruguay's land is given over to raising cattle and sheep so we must think of the goo the ranch hand as Uruguay's number one worker [Music] if the cowboy of Texas or Wyoming has his equal anywhere it is here in the South American cattle country the gaos have a long record too for there have been cattle on the plains of Uruguay for hundreds of [Music] years there are nine times as many sheep in Uruguay as there are people in proportion to population Uruguay has about 18 times as many sheep as the United States Uruguay looks to her millions of sheep primarily for wool the country's leading single [Music] export the state control school system reaches every child even those in the rural areas education is free and it is also compulsory the government furnishes free textbooks later on these youngsters can go on to secondary school college and university all free or Uruguay pays the cost of training its lawyers and doctors its engineers and Architects there is less illiteracy in Uruguay than in any other country south of the United States it's Roundup time at least once a year on the big ranches and each year over a million head of cattle make the trip to mark [Music] on the outskirts of Mo ofo is the largest cattle market in the world unlike our Stockyards there are no fenced in [Music] enclosures the men we see here are the cattle buyers and sellers [Music] the leaner animals go to the saladero where their meat is [Music] saled to the frigorifico a plant for freezing and packing beef for export go the top grade cattle the shower bath gives a good cleansing to their hides and [Music] Hoops so here in full swing is Uruguay's other major industry all of this beef is for export the best customers are the British today much to the beef before it's frozen is bone this saves a lot of cargo space the bones and other waste products will be ground up and exported as chicken feed and [Music] fertilizer B markets for its meat products and its wool good harbors and easy access to the world sea Lanes these have meant economic progress and security for Uruguay ugu beaches are among the finest in South America by national law every Uruguay is entitled to two weeks vacation each year with pay and a lot of these vacations are spent on the shore besides thousands come here every summer from Argentina [Music] as for the casinos some of them are state-owned and all of them are operated under official scrutiny and with the government sharing in the profits State share is turned back into public benefits in the long run the real winners are the common folk the Uruguayan [Music] people in mono everybody seems to buy tickets for the public Lottery many loyal citizens criticize government lotteries but the officials point out that all the people share in the profit a hospital a fine one built with public funds casinos and the lotteries helped in raising those funds here the poor receive free medical care including the services of doctors and dentists other patients are here because the government's health insurance plan entitles them to hospitalization it doesn't cost much to be sick in [Music] orua the state owned Banks control all banking throughout the country government banks handle Nationwide business in insurance which is a Government monopoly in mortgages housing Social Security pensions and other form Ms of financing Public Welfare as well as in straight banking the whole system utopian though it is is taken for granted by the uruguayans very few people are rich very few are poor there is little unemployment and anybody can retire at 60 with a pension the state owned theater a state-owned hotel the headquarters are the government's unemployment insurance and pension [Music] Administration the government owns grain elevators just as it owns factories for processing cement alcohol and petroleum a citizen is free to go into business the government will help him and in many cases the government will will compete with him too Uruguay is well supplied with railroads some of the roads are British owned and some are owned and operated by the state which has provided its lines with streamline diesel trains these oddl looking tanks on automobiles are charcoal burners or agues without oil exep by importation so there's much use of charcoal burned in these tanks to form gas as a substitute for [Music] gasoline lack of coal and oil has forced the use of wood as fuel and factories as in this paper mill but the straw isn't to be used as fuel that's going into [Applause] paper factories like this will increase in number when more Motive Power is available to that problem the new hydroelectric Dam on the Rio negro is a large part of the answer the new dam financed by the government was started by German Engineers using German equipment but Specialists from the United States are helping uruguayans finish the job even with increased electrical power Uruguay is not likely to become a manufacturing country on a large scale it lacks raw materials especially mineral stadium in mono is a particularly good one the brand of soccer played in the stadium is particularly good too the uruguayans just naturally take to this game in 1924 at Paris and again in 1928 at Amsterdam they won the Olympic Soccer Championship The Stadium seats 880,000 that leaves only about 2 million uruguayans outside doing something [Music] else umpires are the same the world over always wrong notice that this one is given police [Music] protection the crowd is much like a baseball crowd in the United States one reason why a visitor from the states feels at home in orua the fundamental and important reason for that feeling is that uguay has a large middle class the Senate building where there has been plenty of proof that Uruguay is a real democracy representatives of the people meeting in this chamber have given the country its amazing structure of laws dealing with labor education suffrage Public Works and public [Music] health note that some of the Senators are women B has no censorship of news or opinion there is complete freedom of speech a right which is often strenuously exercised here in the Senate it is outstandingly Progressive and Democratic land and mo ofo is indeed a handsome Capital but in spite of Modern Skyscrapers and magnificent boulevards uruguayans know that the strength of their country has its roots in the soil and pastures of the Interior La republ Oriental Del Uruguay to give it the full and official name is wide sunlit and productive the gaos and she perers are important citizens of one of the most likable of all countries so that was a government produced film that was kind of looking at uh Central and South American countries um and was part of a programs that were trying to develop or help support those countries from falling into um communist hands um both for the good and for the bad uh so I determined that we have not watched threads of technology and mostly it's because it's silent and um the uh it was transferred uh had the film elements but we didn't have the audio elements and there's no time for ugliness [Music] the city or near it any City anywhere one size or another we flee from it and are drawn to it oppressed excited frustrated enthralled appalled by it [Music] [Music] the city or near it this incredible collection of things people Pathways habits history problems and [Music] possibilities what do we want in a city everything we have ever wanted to fill our needs and meet our wishes out of our needs and wishes we make our cities and the lives we lead in them how have we managed all you have to do is wake up in the morning and look around [Music] he [Music] [Applause] somehow it happened by accident [Music] perhaps by compromise surely by things done and undone disorder order and [Music] disproportion deterioration monotony ugliness amid affluence who did it who does it still all these did it or failed to stop it [Music] in the end all the people who didn't see or had learned not to see we all share the consequences but there are opportunities to share as well what can we do any number of things the planting of a tree the design and construction of of a building that Graces its [Music] surroundings the Redevelopment of a great downtown [Music] area the center of the city revived and embellished whatever the ACT whatever its scope the common element is designed fine and always an urgent will to make things better than they are now where do you start just look around it could be here as you approach the city from what you see along the way what kind of City would you expect to find when you arrive urban sprawl the careless misuse of land unregulated and unrestrained the big loud cell on the March clutter As you move toward the city what visions of it are raised by this and what by this as much as anything else the city is an experience and the approach foretells what it will be like [Music] the landscape suddenly opens up allows the city to be discovered the capital of the nation at the far end of a road that respects the beauty of [Music] nature surrounded by possibilities often we see seem determined to kill them off the Waterfront potentially a proud to land bound imaginations a place for people to enjoy yet here in Detroit and in other cities the river becomes a magnet for industrial [Music] debris in Washington the pomac lies unfulfilled half hidden vulnerable to the leavings of litterbugs unpledged to Lively human use and yet the alternatives are there loud and clear why not bring River and people [Music] together let the river Grace the city and the lives of its people [Music] oh [Music] a Wandering walk poo Del Rio for the pleasure of citizens in the heart of the [Music] city but what happens when down Town runs down it's hard to believe that this part of Hartford Connecticut did today the eyes scans a center of Commerce built to human scale Constitution plaza where the eye meets the variety it demands the surprises it savors the gentle piece of growing things there is a place for automobiles and a place for people they are not the same place traffic goes under and around the plaza cars park underground people go about their business safely in an area designed for people it is Pleasant to discover places to get lost in yet reassuring to find landmarks to go by what you see around you is important whether the view is from the office from the home [Music] anywhere public and private resources will combine to renew much of downtown America but you can't tear down and replace everything sometimes a short look backward is the way to a special kind of progress Jackson Square in San Francisco chose to restore and preserve its Victorian past out of rundown older buildings it has made a prosperous and attractive home for downtown [Music] business a place to work a place to live for many slums nothing can be done they are too far gone they must be uprooted and [Music] replaced but housing for low-income families need not be lowgrade housing evidence St Francis square and San Francisco a Housing Development sponsored in this case by a union designed with concern with [Music] attention or does publicly sponsored housing have to be mean and ugly more evidence the municipal lowcost housing program in Mount Clemens Michigan designed for livability for the sensibilities of people [Music] but what about rundown urban areas that are not well used that could be used to attract people with higher incomes to expand the tax base and breathe new life into the city one answer Detroit style at Lafayette Park near the Heart of the City the res residents Drive their cars into an underground parking area they are home in the city but with the gift of space order and good design not too long ago in the southwest section of Washington DC the capital looked down with shame on its surroundings today another and quite different story [Music] water [Music] there are times when only complete renewal can answer the need but there are structures and areas that deserve further life and remind us of what our community has been and can be again continuity preservation of early values the touches and details that say we care for our own sensibilities and those of our children this is the story of the Georgetown section of Washington a story of care concern and time taken to set things right [Music] yet Nostalgia is not enough searching for betterment expanding America keeps moving outward for peace space privacy and then somehow manages to box it itself in again deadening in its regularity saddening in its misuse of natural features too often the Suburban tract seems to have come out of a mograph machine yet there are ways to break up Suburban uniformity even in the medium cost ranges just North of San Francisco in Marin County these houses plann for economy retain a sense of privacy and individuality [Music] in Virginia a happy meeting of good design land use and Landscaping a matter of money by no means exclusively for there are expensive suburban homes that misuse the land and abuse the [Music] [Music] eye just as there are others that respect the landscape and Delight the senses the hous is well sighted the tree is preserved wires underground where they [Music] belong life in the suburbs increasingly is life behind the wheel to stop and shop for chance to buy once he has left his car let the buyer beware too many of the new shopping centers are obstacle courses for people concrete and cars no place for a tree very little for human beings it needn't be that Grim Detroit's Northland shopping center can also accommodate the car 10,000 of them at once cars are separated from people and stores [Music] The Shopper walks free of Auto traffic in walls designed for civilized browsing and buying even for the accidental Meeting of Friends Beyond trade and merchandise a concern for the small things that are big the amenities the Grace notes of sculpture vegetation the play of water a shaded path the fun of shopping enhanced by touches of taste color and form what Suburbia can do downtown can do equally well the successful mixing of business and pleasure Commerce and comfort the special attractions of Rockefeller Plaza in New York City bring people to play to watch to pause these extra touches also draw business into the nearby shops for big cities only heartly in winter in All Seasons Canton Ohio offers the same benefits and Pleasures for its 115,000 citizens at Central [Music] Plaza is not a matter of size or scope small things have a large place a well-designed trash container trees and flowers to brighten the city a place to sit a place to walk that interests the eye all the details that say beauty and concern all part of the America we see the America we can have if we want it what can we do what can you do in your community look around become aware of what's wrong and why make a visual survey of your community urge your local government and Civic leaders to prepare a long range program for good Community design demand Community tree planting programs effective ordinances to regulate signs and billboards to place utility lines underground local government cannot do it alone business leadership is vital to get these programs moving and to keep them alive call on Architects and other design professionals to translate human needs and wishes into a Harmony of structures and spaces it takes all three forces design professionals government Business Leaders always a know and demanding [Music] public the city or near it what will it be like 5 10 50 years from now some things we know population [Music] mounts then we build to meet it at a frightening Pace in the next 40 years we will rebuild America how well will we do it what kind of cities will we build for ourselves and our children will we have disorder or design ugliness or [Music] beauty more than ever the environment we live in the America we see is a matter of choice and of shrinking time [Music] l [Music] [Music] feelings every day and it's all right to have feelings feelings every which way cuz feelings make us PE day but there are happy times and sad times silly and hairy scary times mean need to scream times how do you feel right nowly times gay and let's go play timesed feeling down times how do you feel right now for there are serious times and Furious times jealous and even envious times glad I'm so mad times how do you feel right [Music] now everybody has feelings feelings every day and it's all right to have feelings feelings every special person and I'm feeling this way today there are so many I'm afraid of scary things night and day maybe some really can't hurt me is it all right to feel this way come on hurry up it's not that high oh come on I did it real easy [Music] [Music] oh toy look at this littley come look I'm afraid of worms that are icky and my dogs who jump at me my friends say worms can hurt me still I'm scared as can be sometimes I have scary thoughts and feelings don't be scared that won't hurt people say [Music] then they warn me to watch out for danger I'm all mixed up and Afraid [Music] anyway why have I been called to the office it must be a mistake I bet I don't think I'm in any trouble but why are my hands soaking wet sometimes I have scary thoughts and feelings don't be scared you're all right people say but when I'm call to the prin of's office then I feel scared and Afraid anyway okay [Music] okay all of my friends said this would be easy from up here things look small I think I'll jump up tomorrow better climb down on my fall sometimes I have scary thoughts and feelings don't be scared you can do it they say but would if I should hurt myself badly maybe feeling afraid is okay [Music] I looked for Mom and couldn't find her did she leave me here alone I'm scared what should I do now I don't know how to get home sometimes I have scary thoughts and feelings don't be scared it's all right people say she says my mom never would leave me but I feel scared and Afraid [Music] anyway mom and dad drag me to a party I know that I won't have fun all the kids probably won't like me I'm scared I wish I could [Music] run sometimes I have scary thoughts and feelings there is nothing to hear people say why am I scared of meeting new people I'm all mixed up about feeling this way see you tomorrow bye see you what was that who's in the doorway I should not be here alone is somebody coming to hurt me I wish I were already [Music] home sometimes I have scary thoughts and feelings careful now be on guard people say I think sometimes fear can protect me maybe feeling afraid is okay [Music] what are you doing over here I thought you were I was [Music] wow so I showed that um I did a show at the local University library and there were a bunch of uh college kids and so I showed films about being afraid and this was just before uh Halloween and this film boy this film resonated with them um because there was no resolution uh like I guess we were all rooting for the girl who went to the principal's office to find out what had happened and we were hoping that it was a mistake that she was called in or it was like oh uh we we're calling you in to say how much uh we think you're a great student or you know like something that was going to make her feel better and none of those these were really resolved in a way that felt good so I guess I'm sorry uh that I showed this uh and just leaving you to yourselves to figure it out um because ideally you would show this in a class and then you would talk with your fellow students and with the teacher about like well was there a time that you were scared like what did you do blah blah blah and uh that there's not any of this so and uh the song um really also was just it it just demoralized all the students so Not only was this uh scary for us adults but it's also scary for everybody that watches it so um it doesn't quite like I showed another film called Don't Be Afraid which was trying to address and like talk about like well you're afraid and this is why and this is to help with that and this one is just like here's what it's like to feel afraid uh your fellow students feel afraid uh all the time so there you go um yeah so that's a difference between a film that was maybe shot in and distributed in the 40s versus one that was distributed in the 70s is that this one was more for discussion and resolution uh beyond the film this is an intentionally triggering or provocative film um there is a squirrel battle out here and so I probably should go thank you so much for tuning in
