foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we just watched some footage of junkies in Harlem um not laughing at that situation just laughing at the fact that oh I have some Harlem footage this is awesome oh some kids hanging out on the street having having fun and then oh so this was uh some raw news footage that was used uh in a an intelligent piece I think is what I was told by The Collector um anyways let's uh let's try to clean the power a little bit with uh uh a film that I have set up on the scanner 16 millimeter film that's what we watch that's what we do this is improve your oral report enjoy foreign [Music] Bill's got a problem nothing serious just a homework assignment he has to prepare a five-minute oral report but what subject will he talk about there are so many things that interest him baseball nature photography and stamp collecting [Music] stamp collecting [Music] bill has a fine stamp collection but before he makes up his mind he'll check the list of points his teacher gave the class [Music] let's see choose a subject you can get information on Bill has that a subject of interest to you yes of interest to the class yes he thinks so limited enough for the time you have yes Bill fields that stamp collecting is not too broad he can talk about his foreign stamps [Music] and about his American stamps of which he has many different kinds [Music] oh that settled and the report isn't due until Monday [Music] but it's due Monday bill I know pretty good huh yeah real good have you done your report yet not much to do I'm gonna talk on stamp collecting and I know about that but you still have to practice it don't you well okay I'll go through it you check me out do you have an outline you know how Mr Lawson is about outlines uh I don't need one you'll see what's wrong uh nothing uh I'll start now well um I like to collect stance and um well I have many of them um this this album has stamps for many countries I mean companies that uh advertise in the paper uh I also get a great number of stamps for my uncle who is in uh importer bill doesn't seem sure of himself and he doesn't seem prepared I mean a letter from them he sends me the stamps like these Carl's not impressed um I certainly intend to keep on collecting stamps it's the kind of hobby that you never get tired of you can keep collecting well you can keep collecting all your life now bill is in the last portion of his report aren't these interesting I hope you can see them their statehood issues I have quite a few of these and then I got some I I have some stamps on American um authors oh no these are American composers I have a series on American authors too as you can see it's a very nice series very pretty and well very nice I think it's fun collecting stamps I think you'll think it's fun too and interesting that wasn't very good was it Carl I do know a lot about stamp collecting but it's hard to explain maybe you're trying to do too much you've got foreign stamps and American stamps and you mentioned States and famous people I mean what am I supposed to get out of it maybe I can just talk about my United States collection that still covers too much you're supposed to have a central idea remember how about what I learned from my United States collection that sounds better write it down and I think you probably need an outline Carl is right an outline as their teacher suggested will help Bill organize ideas in his topic Carl is wondering what books is Bill using for his report Bill does own a few books on stamp collecting but Carl's suggestion is good he ought to get more material from the library Carl's advice has been helpful the next day Bill begins his research in the card catalog of the library the cards help him find a number of books on stamp collecting the library also has magazines with current information on stamps there is so much that bill is going to narrow his topic down to learning American history from stamps later at home bill has completed a new outline he's also copied it on three by five cards learning American history from stamps his introduction is the story of the first United States stamps his central idea is that his collection has been useful in three ways bill has become more familiar with the achievements of famous Americans he's learned more about the histories of the states and he has a better appreciation of American ideals these three points make up the body of the report Bill's conclusion is a challenging suggestion to form a stamp club toward the end of the week bill rehearses again with Carl playing the audience my topic is learning American history from stance the history of American stamps goes back to 1847 when the first stamps were issued by the United States Post Office the first stance honored Franklin in Washington well what's the matter Carl well you started just fine but I don't think the whole class will be able to see the stamps and holding the album is awkward too don't you have a better way to show the stamps bill has an idea he'll show the stamps with his projector the idea is fine everyone will see the stamps Carl will operate the projector while Bill gives his report the big day is here bill will give his report next bill seems quite confident now remember how he started out when he first gave his report to Carl um I like to collect stamps and uh well I have many of them um now listen to Bill's introduction my topic is learning American history from Stan the history of American stance goes back to 1847 when the first stamps were issued by the United States Post Office the first dance I'm in Franklin and Washington since 1847 many other famous American men and events have been commemorated by stance Franklin and Washington May remind us of other Statesmen and presidents his introduction is direct and leads to the body of his report as he follows his outline achievements of other Americans may not be familiar with this man he's one of the American composers I learned about for my composer series of stamps I became interested in some of these the class is alert and attended they sense Bill's interest and excitement part of American History too I found and how it can help you appreciate our country and its people my stance have also helped me learn more about the history of our 50 states this stamp was issued in 1950 it commemorates the admission of California as the state in 1850. many stamps are issued on anniversaries of important dates of History Bill is moving right along on his history theme remember his first attempt um I told you that I had some United States stamps aren't these interesting now bill is well prepared and confident to the union this is the Minnesota centennial stamp 1858-1958 adding the Centennial to my collection helped me learn a little more about that state these next two are for our new Estates Alaska and Hawaii admitted in 1959 bill is moving into the last point of the body of the report but they also learned along with great men and great events in our history there are also great ideas I learned some of the ideas from another group of fans the series is sometimes called the American Credo series on each stamp is a quotation from a famous American these are Washington's words and these are Lincoln the Patriots also include Jefferson Patrick Henry Benjamin Franklin and Francis Scott Key bill has almost reached his conclusion remember the first time he concluded his report now let's listen to Bill's new conclusion these men shared the idea only one way that has made my stamp collecting more useful and interesting I hope some of you will find it interesting enough to join the new stem club I'm organizing nice job Bill yes bill has done a good job his conclusion offered an invitation to the whole class as for the entire report do you see how choosing the right topic limiting the topic researching it outlining it and rehearsing it have paid off for Bill [Music] foreign [Music] is that thing yeah it's them good mother they're here look mother I'll go let them in hi Grandma hi Grandma sweetheart my hand makes you look oh brother okay let's go come on Lauren going out to Grandma let's all get together and say happy birthday as we go out foreign [Music] make a wish and blow out the candles [Music] make a wish [Music] foreign I'm sorry for many reasons um I'm just going through a collection of some uh audio tapes that have survived a flood just barely survived a flood so um anyways that's why I decided to show you this super depressing um Make-a-Wish film after a rousing film about stamp collecting and I should say I was super excited to see that little handheld opaque projector that was awesome I didn't know those existed um uh that's so cool uh anyways uh let's um have Ken Nordeen uh tell us about energy for the future enjoy [Music] fossil fuels they were produced in the depths of the earth over a period of millions of years yet in little more than a century our fuel guzzling Society of movement comfort and prosperity has begun to deplete the supplies [Music] petroleum will remain our most important source of fuel for the immediate future but as the reserves of readily available oil and gas dwindle research where alternative sources of energy geothermal energy and so nuclear power to tap the awesome energy of the atom less polluting and more efficient methods of using coal oil shale a new source of fossil fuel even the power of the Wind and the energy of the Sun these are some of the energy sources for the future the energy of the sun stored beneath the Earth in the form of coal and late night is now being exploited with renewed enthusiasm cool is by far the most abundant of our fossil fuels and much of it is accessible to existing mining techniques exploration and mapping of geological resources discloses that many billions of tons of coal lie beneath the United States landscape unfortunately the use of coal has involved serious consequences for the environment strip mining techniques used to uncover coal have at some locations laid millions of acres of land to waste foreign burning of coal has released tons of toxic gas into the atmosphere now the demand for energy and the passage of Clean Air laws have encouraged a new look at how coal is produced and consumed this installation in Chicago Illinois is an experiment in a technique called coal gasification the process converts coal into a clean burning fuel synthetic Natural Gas in the future it may enable us to exploit fully our abundant coal reserves without jeopardizing the quality of air another potential source of fossil energy is found where ancient Seas deposited layer upon layer of sediment this rock rich with the remains of tiny marine organisms is oil shale to the Ute Indians of the American West it is known as The Rock that burns it can be mined and processed to produce crude oil and gas geologists have found many large oil shale deposits in the United States in total these deposits are thought to hold more than six times our known reserves of crude oil not all of the Shale can be exploited economically but Mining and processing of the rich Rocky Mountain deposits are already underway on an experimental basis the techniques that makes them since the 1800s actually the rock is not Shale at all and it does not contain oil it is Milestone that contains a solid organic substance called kerogene this apparatus simulates a commercial retort in which Shale oil is processed heating crushed rock fragments causes the Keratin to vaporize oil Vapors and gas rise to the top of the retort and condense the end product is a thick liquid crude Shale oil commercially valuable byproducts such as hydrocarbon gas minerals and a variety of chemical compounds can also be produced in the process oil shale may be an important source of fossil fuel in the years ahead but mining oil shale could Scar the land and because its volume actually increases during processing waste disposal will be a serious problem in addition like all fossil fuels oil shale is an exhaustible resource a source with longer range potential is the energy of the atom nuclear fission reactors are supplying increasing amounts of our electric power and by the turn of the century they may be supplying as much as one-fourth used for nuclear fission must be extracted from the Earth [Music] [Applause] more than 30 million tons of accessible uranium ore are thought to exist in the Western United States enormous quantities of this ore must be mined because the fission process requires a rare isotope of uranium uranium-235 one kilogram of this high grade ore will yield only about seven grams of uranium-235 but those seven grams will be capable of producing more electric power than three million times their weight in coal some experts predict that by the year 2000 high grade uranium ore will become scarce and its cost will be prohibited nuclear physicists are currently working on a solution to this problem the fast breeder reactor which can transform the Abundant supplies of regular uranium into a fissionable fuel called plutonium like all fishing reactors however the breeder reactor presents environmental dangers the potential for a nuclear accident and the production of Highly poisonous radioactive wastes another nuclear energy alternative is the control Fusion reactor this is Select an experimental nuclear facility in Los Alamos New Mexico here scientists are attempting to create a fusion reaction that will produce no waste and use common sea water as its fuel the circular array of electromagnets will be used to contain a plasma of deuterium atoms which are extracted from the sea water [Applause] tremendous temperatures are applied to the plasma to induce a fusion reaction the same process by which the sun produces energy if Fusion reactions can be produced and controlled the oceans of the world will be an almost Limitless supply of fuel but even today there are energy sources that require no fuel at all power plant produces electricity from the natural heat of the Earth's interior it is part of the geisser's geothermal power facility near San Francisco nestled away in a quiet wooded area of Northern California the geysers complex is unknown to the many who think geothermal power to be a dream of the future but it has been in operation since 1960 and eventually it will generate enough electricity to serve the needs of more than 4 million people magma within the Earth Heats groundwater and causes it to rise to geysers or steam vents Wells are drilled to intercept this water and carry it to the surface there it vaporizes into steam which drives electricity generating turbines mapping of hot spring sites shows that many areas of the United States may be suitable for this type of geothermal exploitation and experiments are now underway that will if successful make geothermal power available to an even greater number of regions in New Mexico Engineers are using oil drilling techniques to sink a well into the interior of the Earth their objective is not to find oil but to reach the heat of an extinct volcano pipes will be soaked to a depth of about 2400 meters where geologists estimate temperatures to be as high as 500 degrees Celsius foreign pump through the pipe will be heated and will rise naturally to the surface through a second well hot rock is known to exist fairly close to the surface at many sites in the Western United States dry geothermal power could become an important Regional supplement to fossil fuel and nuclear plants in the near future the motion of the atmosphere is one of our most diffused energy sources and at Oklahoma State University Research is now underway that may result in the large-scale use of wind for generating electricity meteorologists have mapped several regions of the United States where wind is strong and consistent enough to make large-scale wind farming a possibility this prototype equipment includes a special field generator that overcomes one of the biggest obstacles to wind farming as wind speed fluctuates the frequency of wind generated current fluctuates along with it but with the Perfection of the new generator the current frequency can be kept constant this current can be fed into transmission lines to supplement conventional power sources the use of the wind is in effect an indirect use of the Earth's most valuable energy source the Sun this solar furnace a device for the direct use of the sun's energy was developed at the University of Florida's solar Laboratory here it is being used to make synthetic crystals a process that requires enormous amounts of uncontaminated heat energy the parabolic reflector concentrates sunlight at a focal point where the furnace produces temperatures in excess of 3800 degrees Celsius contrast to this solar cell which uses the Sun's light energy to produce electricity and is at present far too costly for widespread General use the heat energy devices at the University of Florida lab are simple and economical these solar panels are constructed of copper plates and coils of copper tubing through which water circulates the plates and tubing are painted flat black and are enclosed in boxes with glass faces the glass lets the sun's energy in but does not let the infrared radiation reflected by the black surface out this energy heats the circulating water providing space heating hot water and electricity for small appliances in this house which has been operating on solar energy for the past 20 years the potential solar energy resource is greatest in the Southern United States and most of the country receives enough heat to at least supplement conventional energy sources 1200 kilometers north of Gainesville near Baltimore Maryland an entire wing of the Timonium Elementary School is heated by solar energy the system which can store enough heat to last from four to five days is saving about 200 liters of fuel oil every day entire communities are now being planned and developed to make maximum use of the sun's energy The Zone Works complex in Albuquerque New Mexico is a model community that depends on the Sun for all its heat and hot water needs the technology of Zone works is elegantly simple water is pumped from the ground by a conventional windmill to be heated in a solar panel the walls of the structure can be lowered to exposed large Drums of water which collect heat from the New Mexico sun and pass it to Interior Living Spaces in summer the walls are kept closed and the same drums provide a natural air conditioning system insulating the interior from outside Heat like the fast breeder reactor the wind farm and the dry Rock geothermal power plant Zone works is a prototype for the future in the present even as we search for new sources of fossil fuel and attempt to conserve the supplies that remain we must explore fully these energy alternatives the era of cheap readily available fossil fuels is coming to an end [Music] love me some Ken nordine um somebody guess correctly that is the the voice of the late 70s early 80s Levi's commercial um among other things uh he also did some word Jazz recordings on his own and actually did a lot of work for Encyclopedia Britannica uh early on I think in the 50s 60s he shows up every once in a while uh and I apologize if I showed that film before I I didn't find it in my um listing of stuff I've shown but there you go all right so behind me I have another film set up uh this one is called selling the power of confidence I'm kind of excited to see what this is this is I like films that are Niche like made for salesmen to get them motivated those it's like watching Glenn and Gary Glenn Ross you know it's kind of like you know number one you win whatever number two you get a set of steak knives uh number three you're fired all right here's selling the power of confidence enjoy [Music] thank you [Music] thank you foreign count platelets hemoglobin hematocrit and you get it all in half the time of any other model on the market yeah but at twice the cost initially that's true but with the volume that you do here what you'll save in time will more than make up the difference how do we know you won't come out with another model in a couple of months that'll make this one obsolete well I'd love it but we won't hmm we can have your people trained and ready to go by next Monday twice the accuracy rate half the time a career in selling offers distinct even enviable advantages over most other kinds of work among them greater freedom of movement a higher degree of self-regulation clearer more concrete measures of results and most notably a far wider and richer range and variety of Human Relationships autonomy Mobility diversity excitement stimulation challenge greater autonomy however means greater dependence on our own resources and that which challenges we sometimes perceive as a threat as professional sales people most of us get a lot of training in how to deal with our customers but we get little or no training at what is clearly the starting Place how to deal with ourselves it isn't always the customer's resistance we need to overcome sometimes it's our own for instance our resistance to making the first call our well-known inclination to put it off in favor of calls on customers we already know hi Bob hi Betty or please talk to French it's Bob Doyle thanks I'll wait I gotta go they bought [Music] congratulations thanks Nathan Bob Doyle yeah listen I'm going to be out your way this afternoon around three o'clock I thought I'd drop by if you're not too busy great I'll see you then how's it going with Clawson well I haven't been able to reach him yet you know if you'd like I could take him and you could have that machine at Mount Olive no no I'll get him I just uh been a little busy okay [Applause] hello this is Bob Doyle with techline medical supplies I'd like to make an appointment to see Dr Claussen about our new S Plus 2 blood analyzer I was thinking maybe sometime next week or the week after if he's not too busy tomorrow at 10 15. no no no that's that's fine that's fine terrific tomorrow at 10 15. thank you I don't know maybe I ought to think about getting into some other line of work selling a dictionary definition the influencing of others to buy the giving up delivering or exchanging of goods or services or money for its equivalent to parting with for a price thanks selling makes the world go around it always has but many customers have ambivalent feelings towards salespeople and many sales people for the same basic reasons sometimes have ambivalent feelings about selling we need to examine those feelings and understand them otherwise it's almost certain that they will undermine our effectiveness in all sorts of ways to their great disadvantage many salespeople share a widespread misconception about the relationship between customer and salesperson specifically that the customer has all the power the salesperson none for too many sales people the customer is always right comes to mean the salesperson is always wrong the effective salesperson knows better anytime we're in a position to satisfy someone else's needs and wants we are by definition in a position of power of course the customer has power too at the beginning the power to see and hear us out or not at the end the power to buy from us or not in any relationship the more we have at stake the greater the other person's power over us the salesperson of course wants the sale as a rule though customers have the higher stakes and are taking the greater risk to buy or not to buy either may turn out to be a mistake can I trust her in other words is she using her power in my interest or only in her own mm-hmm okay okay I'm convinced good you won't be sorry in a couple of weeks you'll wonder how you lived without this you're probably right and honest and productive sales call is not a power struggle rather it's a negotiation between two people both of whom have power in today's world of increasingly complex products and services the customer becomes increasingly dependent on the salesperson's expertise the salesperson functions less and less in the traditional mode more and more as a specialist a consultant a professional Problem Solver in terms of power this means equality in fact it's not unusual for the salesperson to have the greater power but too many sales people though the old notion of powerlessness still hangs on in the back of the mine the first call an appointment with a stranger in his or her territory arranged at his or her convenience if we feel that as salespeople we're essentially powerless we're compromised from the start in effect we cast ourselves as Intruders who have no real right to be there well get it over with [Music] if we feel that the customer has all the power the salesperson none inevitably our strategic options narrow down to two foreign [Music] oh no I can't do that [Music] right here doctor everything you need all you gotta do is plug this baby in push the magic button and bingo All Your Troubles Down the Drain forever I can't do that either cringing and servile or pushy and aggressive the tired old stereotypes of selling intelligence rules out either but if we see ourselves as the inherently powerless approaching the inherently powerful that seems to be the choice yes sir all right you can go in now [Music] good morning Dr Claussen oh good morning good morning come in thank you have a seat thanks well I'm sorry I kept you waiting out there oh would you like some coffee sure [Music] how's it going with Clawson fine foreign how many times have you seen him I don't know four or five why just curious have you asked him for the order oh not yet he's he's kind of hard to pin down what do you mean hmm well it just seems like all your customers are kind of hard to pin down what are you trying to tell me Bob you're a nice guy and you're a Salesman but your nice guy doesn't quite trust your salesman he's afraid of him I know I used to have the same problem what do you mean your nice guy is afraid that if he lets your salesman take the floor that your salesman will wreck the friendship that you've got going with your customer so your nice guy tries to keep your salesman out of things as much and as long as he can and that's why you get so far behind that's why you put off making that first call when you finally run out of excuses and you do make the call that's why there's so much talking and so little real selling the longer you put off getting your salesman the floor the harder it is to let him have it well by that time you've built up some kind of friendship and it feels like selling would violate it maybe even kill it so when you really have to ask for the order when you have to let your salesman take over you can hardly bring yourself to do it at all and then when you finally get through all that and you still don't get the order that's why you get depressed well don't you I used to but I don't anymore now I take a look at it and if I make a mistake I learn from it but Bob usually all it means is that what my customer needed and what I had to sell just didn't match up so you can't win them all why you say that again listen you know Bob you can just tell me to shut up and mind my own business and I will no I uh I appreciate it I think yeah all that training that you get in listening and probing and the rest of the selling skills it doesn't count for much if your salesman has always kept waiting in the wings you're saying I shouldn't be friends with my customers no no not at all if a customer happens to become a friend great but Bob let's face it how many friends do you really have time for speaking of which I've got to run you know Bob you've got all the basic stuff you need to be a lot more successful as a Salesman than you are you have a talent for making friends use it to get your salesman and your nice guy together and get rid of that tiny voice in the back of your mind that keeps telling you that there's something basically wrong with selling there isn't oh Bob have I gone too far no you you uh I appreciate it you don't look like it I do I really I really do thanks you're welcome I tell you it offers every feature that you need in your operation white count red count hemoglobin platelets all in a single 45 second operation that just about eliminates the possibility of human error because it's totally automated no other system comes close Bob it's just too much money I'd have to tear my whole budget apart and start from scratch I don't deny it but look ahead look what you get twice the accuracy rate that means half the number of retakes and here half the time that means five technicians doing the work that now requires seven you project that ahead over just one year and you've covered your investment paid for she's just not going to let me off the hook aren't you no and I thought you were my friend I am have we got a deal would you go over the service contract with me just one more time sure we're all salespeople really every time we speak it's to sell something a product a service an Insight an observation an idea or an image of ourselves that we want somebody else to accept I mean whatever we try to communicate in a very real sense we're trying to sell for instance right now I'm trying to sell you something as it happens a concept of selling basically it's this the chances of really succeeding at selling are pretty dim if somewhere inside you being a salesperson in and of itself is a problem if you have that problem and you track it to its source you'll probably find that you have unwittingly adopted an old concept of selling that in if it ever had any validity certainly has done today the idea that inherently your customers have all the power and you have none consciously or not your customers know better as your selling moves them closer and closer to a difficult decision you are exerting power and they are responding to it you need to be aware of your power in order to make the most effective use of it in helping them make up their minds that's it hi hi how's it going with Clawson all fine he bought good two units didn't I tell you he's opening up a new lab in Jackson Heights congratulations [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] and I was happy at the end good happy time um it's it's kind of a gamble with the sales films sometimes they are great like that scene of him like oh his D is like please um and uh some of them are just boring talking head lectures and then looking at a graph occasionally so um I appreciate uh that that one was paid off and maybe it made up for the downer uh Make-a-Wish and Harlem addiction footage um I don't know but uh thanks for uh watching today um as always we try to show you stuff you've probably haven't seen or wouldn't know anything about uh I was excited to see how many of you actually knew about uh blood analyzer Technologies and had some experience with them uh and also the fact that it kind of resonates uh with uh theranos and Elizabeth Holmes and her magic box magic blood analyzing box uh it seems like it's a thing uh anyways uh thanks for tuning in as always uh please rewind love each other if you like what you saw you can Go to KO Dash fi.com avgeeks you can hit the Thumbs Up Button even if you didn't like what we showed today if you just like the general idea of what we're showing um and also you can go to 80 geeks.com and see other shows that we have online um so if today just didn't do it for you we've got other stuff um and you can also donate at patreon.com avgeeks somebody just did that today and I very much appreciate it that's like a subscription tip jar and that money goes towards buying things like Sharpies or splicing tape or a 16 millimeter cores or our good friend that we burn through a lot is white um artist tape we use that for lots of different things and I should say that we just bought we spent a thousand dollars on a bunch of uh new plastic cans to replace the Rusted cans because what happens is when a a film can rust shut it becomes airtight and then the horrible chemical process of going from acetate to acetic acid is stepped up and we end up with films that we can no longer scan and have to be thrown away so we're actively trying to re-house those into things that don't rust Etc so thanks again for tuning in uh we will see you again tomorrow everybody have a great rest of your Wednesday take care
