foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show uh where we watch old 16 millimeter films that last film was a part of the Coronet collection that we're scanning and uh was a master film that didn't have a soundtrack on it and the thing is visually it is awesome and I don't know if a soundtrack would make it better I don't know I don't have a print of that film uh so I'm gonna actively see if I can find the soundtrack but I don't think it's good the payoff is going to be nearly as good as what we just saw um because it was nuts and there's a whole bunch of these uh educational films that are set up like a game show that's why I should do a show just with that unfortunately some of them are not good at all so anyways thanks for watching uh let's see what we got what we got set up uh uh let's learn about living the things uh that are everywhere now we saw the second edition of this which is called living and non-living things are everywhere where they just smooshed it all together like yeah we'll just make one film um so here's this is missing the title and it's a little spicy but here's living things are everywhere enjoy [Music] there isn't room for even [Music] there must be some place a fella could go and not find anything except maybe a few fish thank you foreign [Music] not a living thing for miles around [Music] listen and look the more you'll discover [Music] how many living things are there and in how many different places everywhere there are surprises [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] things floating on the water be living perfect [Music] thank you [Music] are these moving specks living too [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] thank you foreign [Music] [Music] low away seeds foreign [Music] where will all these seeds find a place to grow [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] what's this growing on the dead law [Music] s foreign [Music] things that run along the ground [Music] there are living things that fly in the air the grass is living so is the tree in the branches or under the bark of trees are other living things [Music] they lived in unexpected places and in places where we expect to find them like fish in the water [Music] fish [Music] no matter where you go you'll find that living things are everywhere [Music] foreign was touching everything that I got bad I got that um yeah pretty great uh let's see so behind me I have a film scanner set up and uh I'm surprised I have not shown I don't think I have I looked at my notes and I don't see any evidence that I showed it um so I have three different versions of Uncle Jim's dairy farm um there's a popular one that was made by uh um uh Jim handy there was and all of it is about like teaching people teaching kids about like what where your food comes from where your milk comes from so so Jim handy this one and then there's an earlier one that I found that I it's kind of a beat up copy but um but this is the third one and this came out in 1979. and uh might resonate with some of you because of the time that it came out so here is Uncle Jim's dairy farm third edition Enjoy [Music] um [Music] what time is George's playing due to the right from the city about 3 30. hop up now get dressed [Music] you kept looking Robin [Music] do you think Georgia likes being on the farm this summer I don't know Robin I hope so too George did you finish your packing yet yep excited yeah I'm a little nervous though listen you two hurry and finish up now so we get to the airport we gotta get organized here [Music] bye sweetheart [Music] foreign [Music] you got here just in time George this calf was born two nights ago and this one's really mine I'm going to enter in the fair the fair yeah the county fair over at Holcomb you know I think Robin stands a good chance of winning a ribbon oh I see it's an exhibit well sort of George all the different kinds of farm animals are entered she's been able to raise the best and the healthiest ones now I've spent a lot of time learning how to feed and care for my cat what does she eat she eats hang green just like other calves but I've been studying the material from the extension service mixing up supplements extra feed for her and because of that she's growing up bigger and stronger that's a big job but it's the same thing we try to do with our kids George we want to feed them so they'll be healthy it sure is a lot going on around here seems like everybody's got a job well I guess we don't think of it as a job the farm belongs to all of us come on I want to show you the silos where all the silage is stored well all the corn we grow is chopped up stock and haul for coffee and then we keep it stored in the silos simple huh sure Bye Mom hi Helen what you doing oh George I was lost in a dream while making bread that's your lot of trouble oh I enjoy making it sometimes they just dream along and uh sometimes it's nice to have something to take your frustrations out on oh mainly I make it because we like it uh here George why don't you start peeling the carrots and fixing up the strawberries okay you know I'm sure your folks do the same things we do here to make sure that your family has a balanced diet every day but just like you see us doing that for the calves I guess I never thought about it well look here now for dinner tonight I'm making the bread you're fixing up the fruits and vegetables that Robin brought in from the garden this morning she did I didn't see her well after you've been here a while George you'll get used to getting up early it takes a while and we're having chicken as good protein for dinner tonight George I really make it good I think you'll like it and those are the three kinds of foods you need to be healthy right no you need food from one more growth what else happened to the county fair oh well the county fair is really a celebration at the end of the growing season it's a place where we can take everything that we've made and grown and shown to our neighbors and the best one wins a prize could I show something George I don't know what other things get shown at the fair there's fruits vegetables baked goods preserves preserves what's that preserves jams jellies things that I put up the main thing is George it's got to be something that you've either made or grown by yourself and there's really not much time for that for you sure would like to show something yeah I understand how you feel George but uh George I've got an idea George come on George is sure becoming a farm boy yeah I think I'll keep him around for a while maybe turn him into a dairyman sure had a good day today Jim five thousand pounds well he'll take it to the milk processing plant it'll be pasteurized there and then distributed in the cities and towns now we cool it here and then it's kept cold all the way to the supermarket isn't 5 000 pounds a lot how much is that in cartons cartons Oh you mean quartz yes well let's see about two pounds to the court so that's around 2500 quarts just in one day yep yeah sure thanks foreign by the stove I want to start the pasteurizing pretty soon oh and George that's the fourth kind of food beg your pardon remember when we were talking about the four food groups that keep you healthy well milk is in the fourth group oh yes I told him that I knew the answer it sounds like you go to a good school it's okay um have you thought of what you're going to study in high school yet yeah yeah me too I'm gonna start taking agourases you are yeah I'm thinking seriously about staying on a farm and I thought that hayride was super boy did you do that very often oh sure all the time in the summer who wasn't Lois a ride coming out I didn't know you could do a dance on a pilot hey she's a lot of fun I hope we can do that again um well I think the things you do in the city sound like fun now I've never seen a hockey race a hockey match and then it's baseball in the summer oh you guys want to ride back to the farm no I don't think so maybe I better go or I promise on Helen I'd do some chores okay let's go hop in okay in here George yeah I can see that what can I do for you what is this what this room well it's my office oh I guess you never noticed before I keep that door closed I didn't know you have an office so small what do you do here well it might come as a surprise George but uh it's more to being a dairy man than just milking cows I know that I've seen you do lots of different stuff well see a dairy is a complicated business George uh besides milking twice a day there's a lot of planning and managing to do now we want to grow the healthiest cows possible give them the best feed at the most efficient price and that way they'll give lots of milk and we can make a good enough living hey this is one of those pictures on telemix right no now every time we have a calf Helen makes this drawing for the individual calf and starts the file now we have a file on every cow we know her parents we know her grandparents we know how much milk she's given now and we can figure out how to increase her milk output is that Shark part of the file yeah or when a cow is 15 to 16 months old we breed her add her to this chart after she has the calf why the chart tells us how long she'll give milk and when to breed her again the average cow can be milked 10 months out of the year just like my dad quite the image I'm dressed for George but uh dad can you come take over for a minute oh sure Hank I'll be right there let's go milk some cows [Music] you know George you got me to think in there about something that never occurred to me yeah you know that's something I never really wanted to be a city businessman I always wanted to be a dairy seemed to be something that was steady enough to rest your life on and yet give you a little Independence too [Music] I guess that's what we all want isn't it a little bit of everything what's that have to do with being a businessman well sometimes you have to be some things you didn't want to be to get to be what you want to be not only that but now you're a poet and a philosopher too George if you can tear yourself away from all this you can go into town with Robin and me I've got some shopping to do yeah I'm almost done okay see you later [Music] foreign oh George would you run back to the dairy case and get me some cheese cheddar you know and how this isn't what I expected what oh Mom are you gonna get to me yeah sure honey I mean this is the same thing that we do at home what is what getting so much stuff from the supermarket well I hope so George I mean I don't know how else your family could eat did you have a farm and a garden in them George what is it everyone in the world goes to the supermarket Farm or no oh oh oh I see you think we should grow all these things ourselves is that it well yes George and all the time you've been with us have you ever seen any of these things growing on our farm I mean like spices orange juice or fish well actually we're pretty lucky because we pasteurize our own milk and uh well we grow some of our own fruits and vegetables I put up preserves and canned goods we've even found a way to make our own cat food but George if you have any other ideas I sure would like to hear them you know what Helen it really doesn't matter where we live or where folks work at we all live pretty much alike George I always said you were a bright boy you got it right for sure come on honey let's go home before it gets too late oh hi Helen and Rob are you all ready for the fair I hear your cast is a real winner Robin I hope so hi Bob sorry I haven't got time to talk to you now but I hope we see you at the fair look for us at the dairy barn well we sure will and good luck Rob foreign [Music] [Music] I know I am but you don't have to be you're the best calf in the whole County so what's for sure you're gonna win right just remember keep your head up and watch the Rope signals George you really scared me I didn't hear you I'm sorry I heard you come out here you okay no no I'm not I'd like to be brave and everything but I am so nervous about the judging tomorrow don't worry your Cap's an easy winner that's easy for you to say you're not entering anything I've been working for this day for such a long time I know and that's why it'll be okay tomorrow you've raised a healthy calf and you fed her right and cared for it oh it's okay George everyone has seen the cat think she's a winner even Mrs Steiner said so see she's got one I hope so [Music] thank you [Music] dairy exhibitors in the barn we are now ready to start showing the junior Fair animals [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] class today I think we have some real outstanding individuals to place in this class today starting with the first animal over the second giving her a definite advantage in size and scale today you certainly have to admire that Darius and angularity on the second animal and the cleanliness that we have in this animal as well is all the rest of the animals in a class today it shows that these kids have put a lot of time and effort into getting these animals ready for the show second goes over third and the advantage that she has in style and balance she's a lot smoother and Tighter in the shoulders and Fuller than the crap and more fluorescent wow thank you where's George Robin they have kind of a little surprise for you sweetheart well once we get the calf foot away we'll tell you all about it here is this yours when did you learn how to pick bread and Helen Tommy that's pretty terrific George you're pretty good for a city boy huh you bet looks good enough to eat I don't believe it this has been a great day oh I'm so proud of you both [Music] thank you [Music] okay I got a number right there on you sack um yeah you know I this is why one of the reasons I like collecting and showing films is that we get to see uh celebrities as their careers go up and then celebrities as their careers go down you know it's like to work that that you know a lot of educational industrial film companies were regionally based all over the United States and so this one was obviously based in near Chicago and uh this was of course uh made for the dairy Council uh because they talk about the four food groups but they prominently talk about milk um but yeah in these little Regional things and you have people who are ascending and they're like looking to get work uh and then you have people who are descending who have already burnt through their television or film status and now are also just looking for work so fascinating absolutely fascinating all right uh we're gonna keep on the farm we're going to learn about uh with this very provocative title Arch against the sky enjoy [Applause] oh foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] track Mr Dix thanks a lot glad you got something out of it good night glad you brought Mr Dick silver mark made a good speech thank you yes he did I'll be out your way one of these days Dan anytime see ya well don't expect me to Glad hand you Porter my opinion is what Mr dick said you know I'm always glad to get your ideas Lulu but where do you disagree with Mr Dix I don't agree with him hardly any place even if you didn't paint it mighty pretty keep up with these new fandangled ideas he says get yourself bigger crops use a lot of Machinery keep your place up to date oh sure it's just dandy the way you tell it Mr dicks but what you don't tell us is where is all this money come from to pay for these things but Lou the question is it's money these things all cost money it's nothing but money money from the time we buy seed until we send the crop to a market and where's all his money come from from the farmer that's where it comes from right out of his pocket there's a lot of what you have to say the life it's gospel I guess I didn't make myself quite clear all of these new developments save money or in some other way they make more money for you oh that's a lot of fancy talk that's all it is I've heard that Mr Gage would rather argue than turn up a pot of gold you've been County agent around here for some time Mark what do you think well if you can spare a few minutes I'd like to tell all of your story sure I can spare a few minutes okay do any of you know Ben Bell down Montgomery Township oban's a corn but the point of this story can be applied to any kind of farmer any place in this country Ben's got a pretty nice place down there not the biggest but he's doing all right he's young enough to be interested in new developments and he's old enough to have seen farming done the hard way when he was a kid he was right in the middle of all that drudgery you younger men are kind of Lucky you've never worked that way but Lou and I remember it and my back still aches when I think about it I mentioned this just to show you that Ben's gone through a big change in farming just like a lot of us he's worked hard with the old methods and he knows how they used to keep Farmers broke both financially and physically Ben still works hard but like most up-to-date Farmers he uses his head too for example he's been using hybrid Seed corn for years but still he keeps checking for new developments in hybrid seed and he even takes my advice once in a while Ben has the idea that good crops begin with the right seed that's a pretty hard idea to argue with well that season I'm telling you about things went along about as usual if anything Ben got some breaks on the weather things were moving along just about as good as a man has any right to expect well by the first of August Ben was beginning to feel a little sorry for every man who didn't own a farm there hadn't been a serious setback and whatever Ben did he did it with happy thoughts about how that crop was coming along from the last of September rolled around though you can guess what Ben was going through corn looks good doesn't it Ben yeah Marge this ought to be the best crop I've ever had you deserve it well that doesn't always seem to count getting what you deserve I mean that doesn't sound loud yet I don't understand well the crop looks good right now awfully good maybe it sounds silly but that's why I started worrying today I'm getting so close to a bumper crop that it's going to be a tough jolt if something goes wrong at the last minute oh no don't start worrying Ben that doesn't do any good no of course it doesn't but gosh there's a mortgage in you've been needing a new refrigerator for a long time I'd like to get that bicycle for Patty I know we've talked about all those things but I'm sure we've talked about them we talked about them last year in a late fall storm gave us the answer we talked about them the year before the corn was so dry at picking time I left more than 10 bushels an acre in the field farmers are sure on America around aren't they yeah if you can see anything merry about it we go round round all right sometimes we make some pretty sour music it's almost like somebody's trying to torment us we get bigger yields late maturing hybrid and one way or another we lose most of the game if we guess right and step over that Merry-Go-Round at the right spot okay but if we don't when do you think you'll pick this year Ben [Applause] hard to say Marge it's been so wet first chance I get I'm going to find out what some of the others are thinking just talking about you Ben wondering when you're going to pick wanted to ask you the same thing I'm going after mine next week my corn tested out at 27 today that'll give me a good clean job of picking uh-huh then what gonna sell it off right away take what I can get yeah from what I hear that's not going to be so much I don't take any chances I waited too long last year how about you Lon didn't figured I'd leave mine out a little longer the way the weather's been the last few days might try out quite a bit what are you gonna do Ben I'm going home and flip a coin [Applause] of course Ben didn't leave it entirely after chance he went as far as he could toward making the right guess still seemed a little too wet for safety but Ben wasn't sure so he took a sample down to the grain elevator to get a moisture test he got the News 29 moisture content but after he got it he still wasn't sure what to do it'll come a lot cleaner if I pick now not so much silken husks less chilling too it'll cut down the corn bore losses handled a lot better before bad weather sets in then I can sell it off right away but the market will probably be flooded and I won't get near as much as I've been counting on or I can crib it and take a chance on feeding some of it to the Hogs before it gets too moldy Ben did the other thing he knew what to do he guessed where the brass ring might be on his Merry-Go-Round and a few days later he started to pick it picked good and clean all right just the way Ben knew it would with the moisture content between 25 and 30 percent and as he saw his crib filling with those fine hybrid ears Dan's good spirits returned maybe he had guests right this time he was even more certain when he went back over part of his field looking for ears to pick him out of mist he didn't find enough to make a good Square meal for a pull it and not much shelling either yeah Ben was near the top of the world late maturing hybrid corn for big yields that mechanical picker for a good clean job what more could a corn farmer ask for well early the next spring Ben went down to his crib for another look he'd been doing that every few days since the web had begun to warm up [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] March March Ben Ben what is it it's the mortgage it's your refrigerator spoiled corn it's the same old merry-go-round and I got off at the wrong place again a whole Mark Porter so you do agree with me uh-huh up to a point Lou I'm telling you this story because Ben kept on going Way Beyond the spot where many stopped oh now don't give me that educated double talk this Bim fella he saw the light didn't he uh-huh and that's the point where I stop agreeing with you because you see Ben didn't give up he kept on trying he made an effort to do something about it you see Mr Link I've been hearing it around that you know all about farm buildings and I dropped in to see if you can give me some information be glad to Mr Bell if I can would you sit down well I read some place that the Department of Agriculture is recommending that us Farmers dry our ear corn mechanically for storage until we want to use it or sell it and I thought maybe you'd know about it yes I know what you mean there's been a lot of research done on that lately I have some pictures here it's the biggest thing for corn Farmers since the mechanical picker here it is a corn drying and storage building yeah I guess that's it all right but tell me Mr Lee I guess my dad had his troubles with corn all right but I don't seem to remember the kind of things have been happening to me all we seem to need Dan was enough sun and enough rain we'd pick when it seemed to be the right time didn't even make a moisture test would shovel the corn into the crib and practically forget about it I don't remember much trouble of any kind that's right Mr Bell you remember your dad used open pollinated Seed corn which matured earlier than hybrid he didn't have to worry about late fall storms got pretty dry right in the field if you pick by hand then the crib filled up maybe at the rate of 50 to 75 bushels a day it had time to dry out some more before it was covered up but today with the late maturing hybrids and the mechanical picker putting a thousand to two thousand bushels a day into the crib then you need something more than natural drying and that's what this crib does huh yes with the forced air ventilation here's one we've just put up over in Galloway Township and here's the way it looks when it's filled up with corn now if you'll come over here to this model Mr Bell it'll give you an idea of how it works the air is pushed through by this 42 inch fan driven by a five horsepower motor here you can see how the air is forced out of the tunnel and through the corn and here's a cutaway front view drawing Mr Bell that also shows how it works you can see how every single ear is hit by the draft of air if you can imagine these lines moving the way the air does then you'll get the idea the fan forces air into the tunnel from outside and then the air travels equally in all directions up through the corn and then out again through the space between the ribs yeah uh-huh and in a side view here's the way it looks into the tunnel up through the corn and out through the end wall openings yeah looks like it might take me off the merry-go-round what's that Mr Bell oh just the kind of family joke Mr Link oh I see well I don't need to tell you what this drying means Mr Bell you can pick your corn before it gets dry because that's when it picks best you can store it safely until you can get the best price cut down your labor cut down your worried yeah it sounds good but what happens when you're not using this building for corn that tunnel if it could be moved out the building could be used for a lot of things couldn't it sure it could and here's one example of it's being used to store Machinery uh-huh let me show you how it's done just as you said the tunnel comes out in sections when you don't need it can be done in less than an hour and then you've got another Farm building for just about any use you can think of fact is great many farmers in all parts of the country are using Quonset buildings for a lot of different things you'll find them on the most up-to-date places no matter where you go because this is a building that's been engineered to do a modern job for the farmer I'll take care for instance this will give you an idea of its versatility with this 40 by 140 foot building a grassland farmer gets real fire protection for his hay and for the surrounding buildings and an entirely different use a 40 by 100 foot building to house 40 calves in New York state and here's the way a Kansas farmer uses one the same size for wheat storage this 32-foot building has bins added for the year-round storage of shelled corn wheat soybeans grain sorghums or other small grains this Ohio farmer has what you need Mr Bell he dries and stores his corn in the back and in addition his room in front for soybeans you can see how easily adaptable it is this is a CCC grain Depot in South Dakota that shows the trend toward using the ground to support the way to stored grain to eliminate the work of turning shelled corn and small grain here's a new cooling tunnel that gets the same result this 24 foot wide building is in North Carolina but it's popular every place for a low-cost Machinery storage and general shed purposes and it's also ideal for a livestock shelter and here's still a different use a loafing Barn that's comfortable for the cows in any weather for dairying it's used in conjunction with a milk parlor with this kind of setup Mr Bell you can cut the milking chore time to half what it takes for machine milking in an ordinary stanchion Barn but here's a stanchion Barn in Minnesota designed for real labor saving plus the same Fire Protection so you can see Mr Bell why I say these buildings have been planned and engineered to do a job for any kind of farmer for you it's a job of corn drying and Storage and for any other kind of storage you may need yeah uh-huh I see all right but it must be pretty expensive you'd think so with all its advantages actually Mr Bell this building not only pays for itself it gives you a profit year after year how do you mean profit here's what I mean right here in these letters from Farmers look at this one a case where a building paid for itself the first year the owner tells and to tell how the building works for him and I feel quite sure that this building will meet your requirements I'd also like you to take these folders along show them to Mrs bell too well thanks Mr Lang I'll think it over all right Mr Bell glad you dropped in so long bye [Applause] so Ben thought it over and made his decision in his car and drying building began to take shape Ben watched it grow to him it was like a gigantic suit of armor that would protect him in the age-old battle against nature as he looked at the curves of Steel he felt complete confidence for the first time in his adult life he knew that now he had the means to control the time of harvest and the time of marketing that from now on he was going to be the boss that fall when his corn had a moisture content between 25 and 30 percent then began to pick and it was coming in clean with good husking very little shelling just the way it did the year before everything was going swell a good yield no mechanical troubles and Ben worked with growing confidence as that corn moved up the elevator and dropped from sight into the building soon Ben thought I'll send a gale of wind through the tunnel and the air will go all through the building and dry the corn and I can keep it as long as I want to I won't sell it till I feel like it and that'll be when the Market's right there wasn't any ceremony when the time came for the dryer to go to work then just threw the switch the end Rush of air was going to make this crop safe side of it made Ben feel good but then it felt good before when things had gone wrong he didn't know what might go wrong this time but he wasn't going to build up Marge's hopes again until he was sure when they talked they didn't talk about corn or bicycles or refrigerators or mortgages Marge understood what was going on she played right along because she's seen Ben sometimes a couple times a day up there looking at his corn to see how it was drying she knew what was going on in his mind but finally she couldn't stand the suspense any longer so she followed Ben out one day hey what's going on up there take a look what do you think Ben I don't this time I know we've got what it takes of course you know what happened after that the mortgage got a slug in the jaw Marge got a refrigerator Patty got a bicycle but even more important Ben got off the merry-go-round large yields through hybrid seed and the advantages of fast low-cost mechanical picking mean a lot more now with controlled drying controlled drying blue that's what we needed and that's what Ben got even in a year with normal weather he'll make more money on his car than his neighbors who haven't dried theirs plus a Farm building you can use for just about anything he wants that's what he got and that's the end of my story as far as Ben's concerned as far as everybody here is concerned no matter what your type of farming is you can get off your own Merry-Go-Round by keeping up to date on Modern farming methods oh it ain't no fun arguing with a man that always wins Mark Porter you know the effort I know that Lou argument [Applause] foreign so it's a totally different film about Quonset Huts I love it absolutely love it I'm a big fan of Kwanzaa Huts I like them I like how they look um and I'm guessing that this Quonset Huts were there were a lot of Manufacturers were making things for uh the war effort because they're easily built and then they were looking for post-war usages and so these are both U.S steels attempt to try to Market to other places and this resonates with me because I'm looking uh it's not something in the immediate future but soonish looking for a way to build storage for the films that's better than what I currently have so Quonset Huts is one of the things I was looking at so there you go uh thanks for joining us today I very much appreciate it um we'll be back again tomorrow to show you more more films um but
