foreign I can't believe that that guy was typing on the plane what a jerk holy cow I mean he's bad enough with a laptop like like wow um anyways so that film was silent and this is why this was uh attached to it on the outside of it it said ectochrome commercial safety film original do not project so this is part of the that Coronet uh batch well it's I don't know 9000 films is that a batch or is it is it a bigger thing anyways so in there are some original materials or some uh print materials that aren't the actual print so some of them don't come with a soundtrack and this is what's considered a safety print so this is something that would they would strike a new negative from or uh you know any number of things but they would not run it through a projector they would maybe view it in a viewer but even then probably not so we're using it on a scanner which is very delicate with films so we feel pretty good about being able to do that I'm Skip and this is the 80 gigas lunchtime streaming show I don't think I said that so right off the bat we just geeked out uh and I do appreciate all the geeking out about uh projectors uh projectors about uh typewriters and about typing class I took typing class in high school it was probably one of the best things I ever did because my handwriting was horrible um and and now it's interesting to see almost a post keyboarding world uh with you know everything hand thumb transcribe uh yeah it's kind of kind of interesting anyways um there's lots of questions out there and I know one of them is why do cats have whiskers why is that enjoy [Music] um foreign [Music] I wonder I wonder what do you wonder wonder cat I wonder why do cats have whiskers why do cats have whiskers well if you're curious enough you can find out just look around oh sure that's a good idea I'll watch that mother cat and her kittens [Music] fun watching them find out about the things around them I did that too when I was just a little kitten I used to touch things with my paws you tell a lot about things from how they feel and I sniffed everything my nose told me a lot and I was always listening to things my ears told me about what was happening around me learned how wonderful food tastes I guess my tongue did that for me eyes always could see even the tiniest movement near me [Music] well you must have been a very curious kitten too you were using your senses of sight smell touch taste and hearing like these kittens are doing like all cats do to find out about the world around them [Music] do you think whiskers might also help you find out about things well sometimes I do feel things with them like when I walk through the grass the grass kind of tickles me foreign whiskers are part of my sense of touch good thinking that's right [Music] whiskers help your sense of touch they tell you about the world around you [Music] whiskers over my and down under my chin too just as all cats do all your whiskers help your sense of touch you have another sense that's especially good too watch and you'll find out what I mean it's dark in here isn't it yes but I can see just as well as this cat can not all animals can see as well in the dark as you cats can you mean a cat sense of sight is special that's right cat's eyes contain a substance that gathers in light and reflects it like a mirror that helps you see even when there's just a little light Where You Are [Music] I wonder why cats have eyes like that if you're curious enough you can find out by watching how a cat's eyes work together with its other senses oh I think I understand what you mean that's her haunters and our senses help us hunt especially at night when we can see well even though it's dark and we can hear very well we can hear even the tiniest Movement we can turn one ear in the direction of a sound to hear it better and that helps you follow the animal you're hunting that animal is called your prey your eyes are set in the front of your head that helps you judge how far away the prey is while your senses help you hunt your prey their senses help them escape from predators like you [Music] I'm a predator that's just another word for hunter if you look closely at a mouse you'll see that a mouse's eyes are on the sides of its head that helps it see all around without turning its head a mouse has sensitive whiskers too and very sensitive ears mice hear better than cats do if there's a predator around the mouse will see and hear the predator and be able to escape so a predator's senses help it hunt but you know we cats don't really use our senses to hunt very much most of us are pets and we don't have to hunt for our food no unless you live on a farm you don't hunt much anymore but cats long ago did and your big relatives still do oh you mean lions and tigers yes all their senses work together to help those Predators get their prey [Music] just as all your senses would if you still had to use them to help you hunt for your food [Music] together to help you do you do too you cats don't have trouble keeping your balance in narrow places do you no why not I don't know I just sort of feel how to do it is that what you meant that a cat's senses all work together to help it have good balance yes good thinking wherever you are you're getting sent signals not only from your whiskers and your eyes and your ears but from all parts of your body these signals help you keep your balance that's what makes it easy for you to land on your feet cats are very good at that aren't we your senses can also tell you something else they can tell you about the mood and the feelings of another cat that cat doesn't look friendly uh oh when I see eyes like that I know the cat is angry and when I see ears do that I suspect that cat is ready to fight [Music] well Wonder cat wondering why cats have whiskers has helped you find out a lot more about your senses and what they're used for and about what are Hunters call predators and about predators and prey and I have a lot more to wonder about but not just now [Music] thank you um so this is one of those polemic uh film series uh not unlike Uncle Smiley which was invoked in the comments but the idea that um some people really hate this is it the the music because the music is is cloying in the the talking of the cat like I can't even mimic it but yeah both of those are just another thing on the scanner I'm gonna really try to push and uh do more things on the scanner which means more things that we pull and and watch um versus stuff we pre-recorded because the pre-recorded stuff is great but this encourages me to go to this back to the stacks and pull film and show it to you so so we get to knock off and digitize more stuff this one we've shown a silent version of it um but I actually found a print that has sound so this is bike superstars enjoy [Music] it's weird I'm not getting audio going on but we're gonna watch uh this instead microscopic life uh world of the invisible [Music] let's go exploring in the world of the invisible world that you can find in the water of any nearby pond a world so small that you can scoop it up into a jar your passports an ordinary microscope perhaps a guidebook on microscopic Pond life and above all a sense of curiosity and wonder about the things you're going to discover this small animal from the world of the microscope consists of only one cell formed of protoplasm that mysterious substance of which all living cells in plants and animals are made in protoplasm is the secret of life we know much about its physical and chemical nature but we've not been able to solve the basic riddle of what gives it life this bit of protoplasm is a complete animal named amoeba its shape changes constantly it moves toward food simply by flowing in that direction it eats digests and reproduces as all animals must do foreign here is another one-celled creature called euglena but is it a plant or an animal as you can see it clear one is seen as the lighter spot on the left inside the parent colony eventually the sphere bursts and releases the new colonies here's Jack in the boxes are one-celled animals called vorticella we can see right through it yet it performs all the functions of life that a human body does like many small animals it carries its Skeleton on the outside it has a Mall Road and it chews and swallows its food these active little animals are still more complex than the rotifers their bodies are highly developed with a brain and a nervous system they're called Cyclops after the mythical giant because they've only one eye most of them all is enclosed in its outside skeleton the digestive tract shows a continuous pumping motion which pushes food through it just as in more complex animals these animals are divided into Sexes male and female the female produces a large which we see here in two clusters a relative of Cyclops is a larger animal daphnia often called the water flea it's a tiny member of the crab family about the size of a pinhead it moves by using two feathery antennae it's a strict vegetarian and eats small water plants called algae this animal too has an outer skeleton which covers most of its body including its legs it has a heart which we see here beating in slow motion actually the heart beats about 280 times a minute the female carries her eggs on her back inside the skeleton after the eggs hatch the young slip out these beautiful underwater branches are the homes of tiny animals whose Greek name bryozoa means most animals each animal builds a tube-like house for itself using secretions from its body all we ever seal the animal are the organs which come out to catch food another wonderful sight from the world of the microscope perhaps you recognize these they're mosquito larvae which begin their lives in water unlike the other animals we've seen they breathe air using a kind of snorkel that sticks up through the water's surface so you can see that a film of oil on the surface will cause the larvae to suffocate This ferocious little animal hanging from a strand of algae is named Hydra after the many-headed monster of Mythology it's about a quarter of an inch long and looks like a narrow tube with a mouth at one end surrounded by tentacles the tentacles contain poisoned darts which are coiled up inside special cells until they're released by The approach of the prey eventually the victim succumbs to the poison the tentacles will draw the prey into the tube-like stomach and here is Hydra with his victim inside let's take a closer look at some of the plant life in this microscopic World of Water the smallest are algae called diatoms they exist in many beautiful shapes but just how they are able to move about is still one of the mysteries of science these plants contain chlorophyll and manufacture their food with the aid of sunlight it's the same process photosynthesis used by all green life whether the one-celled euglena a soybean plant or a maple tree sometimes they join to form chains which move about in ways so unpredictable that the name of this group of algae includes the Latin word for paradox diatoms along with other tiny plants and animals some of which we've just seen are called plankton they're the beginning of a chain of food in which larger animals feed upon smaller forms until eventually some of the larger fishes become food for man and here is one of Nature's deepest Mysteries the process of reproduction speeded up by the camera this one-celled plant a desmed splits and each half grows to match its counterpart in a wonderful demonstration of symmetry in nature in this tiny Underwater World the skeletons of diatoms are like jewels of startling variety and beauty they and other minute life forms flourish in such billions and trillions that there remains over the centuries may form great deposits some of which have considerable commercial value for example in use as chalk as polishing agents or in making explosives these are some of the things you'll find in a jar of ordinary pond water an invisible World unlocked for you by the microscope if you have the off with that means good equipment good equipment means good fit when you're in the saddle you should be able to put one foot on the ground without leaning your bike like this see this bike fits me too small too big just right right equipment also means a horn or a bell so that you can warn cars and people that you're coming your equipment in good condition give your tires enough air be sure your bike gets oil those brakes thank you locking chain a good one [Music] and if you really want to play it safe register your bike with the police Sheriff he's gone he broke out of his sale he stole sure you're a pretty good writer then it's safe to ride in traffic but how do you ride with it or against it always right with the traffic to the right remember your bike is just like a car always keep to the right and don't we when you do the driver in the car doesn't know what you're going to do next that can mean an accident especially if the driver's uptight always ride in a straight line nobody wants to crack up [Music] if there's a bike lane use it it's a lot safer [Music] but you shouldn't ride on the sidewalk unless it's legal in your town [Music] if you're riding on a country road watch out for slippery gravel and holes [Music] wherever you ride you have to Signal turns too like a driver in a car which way are we going to turn now right or left [Music] what's this signal for [Music] and this one it's for stopping signals let drivers know what you're doing [Music] drivers have to pay attention to lots of signs and traffic signals so do bike riders [Music] [Music] be careful when you're coming out of alleys and watch for pedestrians they have the right of way left turns are tricky and the most dangerous which way do you think we'll take like this through the middle of the street this is the safe way [Music] foreign and when traffic's really heavy don't take chances walk your bike [Music] when it's wet out be extra careful because your bike can skid [Music] always check for traffic around you learn to look back now and then without weaving that takes a bit of skill foreign at night put your light on and wear light colored clothes so you can be Street clear through you [Applause] to drink or not to drink this dilemma tore America apart for many decades until in 1919 the nation voted the 18th Amendment to the Constitution into law prohibiting manufacturing sale of alcoholic beverages in the USA for 13 years not to drink with the law of the land but the controversy continued in 1932 the Democratic Party's candidate for president proclaimed we advocate their appeal of the 18th Amendment then Roosevelt in the cabinet room the White House is about to sign the long-awaited beer bill the president signs the bill why do you drink to get high and loaded when they got a problem sandri get in with the In Crowd I've had a party or something and everyone else is drinking I have to relax because I like the taste of it I drink the socialized foreign with milk eat your friends drink you drink abundantly o beloved [Music] since the earliest recorded times man has cultivated the grape and brewed alcoholic beverages [Music] wine is part of man's culture of his religious and social ceremony and last but not least of his economy [Music] each year more is spent on alcohol than on education [Music] the earnings of some Nations depend on the export of liquor alcohol is Big Business [Music] foreign aspect of our culture that its presence is rarely questioned [Music] we begin at a very early age to develop our social interaction around an alcohol situation [Music] foreign why are there vast sums of money spent on alcohol why do we drink microscopic cells of yeast are the agents that produce alcohol when mixed with sugar and water they attack the sugar in a process called fermentation and ethyl alcohol is given off as a side product after fermentation a sugary mixture such as grape juice contains about 14 alcohol when it is heated to 172.5 degrees Fahrenheit the alcohol boils off as vapor as the alcohol vapor cools it condenses the result is a more concentrated solution of ethyl alcohol called ethanol for short it is a clear colorless liquid used most often for making alcoholic beverages machine [Music] when an alcoholic beverage is swallowed it goes first to the stomach where about 20 of the alcohol is absorbed it requires no digestion but simply passes through the stomach walls into veins that lead to the liver had a soul isn't really that thing same thing food in the stomach delays passage of the drink to the intestines where the rest of the alcohol is absorbed it then passes to the liver where its metabolism or destruction is begun because the liver can destroy only a drop or two of alcohol at a time about one-third of an ounce per hour most of it passes into the bloodstream within a matter of minutes the alcohol in the blood reaches the brain where it produces changes in mood and [Applause] it was only other people are an experiment with 80 proof vodka will show some of the effects alcohol has on coordination first the ball player drinks four ounces of vodka mixed with orange juice 30 minutes later this device called a breathalyzer is used to calculate the amount of alcohol in the ball player's Blood by measuring the alcohol in his breath there is a constant relationship of the alcohol in the alveoli in the lungs and the percentage of alcohol in the blood the alcohol in the bowl player's blood is 0.05 percent okay oh I'm getting pretty good 30 minutes later the ball player drinks four more ounces now the alcohol in the bowl player's blood is 0.09 percent ow okay [Music] the ball player drinks four more ounces now a total of 12. 30 minutes later his blood alcohol level reaches 0.13 percent how the ball player's reaction time is slowing down for this man to drive an automobile in such a condition would be suicidal you always carry your sunglasses and your jackets okay let's turn around I have a seat in that chair and relax for a couple of minutes okay Mr Vineyard this is a breathalyzer test that we're going to give you do you understand that okay and take the sample okay Mr Vena here you go why don't you come over here put your mouth on the little hole there and give it a good strong glow laws differ from state to state and the percentages of alcohol in the blood which determine whether a person is legally Under the Influence you're right at a 0.11 percent okay so to do it you're going to be booked for driving under the influence of alcohol the breathalyzer is given an indication that you would be under the influences previously suspected in most people it takes only a few beers or glasses of wine to be declared legally under the influence [Applause] cases involving drunken driving and violence under the influence of alcohol are filling the courtrooms and Jails of the nation have you given any thought to your drinking habits and what your responsibilities are if you drink the American Medical Association has recently stated unequivocally that alcoholism is a disease there are two distinct features to this disease the first is the psychological disposition of the alcoholic that compels him to return to his bottle the second feature is actual physical dependence or addiction I'm working on physical dependence to alcohol and mice what we do is to put the mice into a no choice situation in which the air that they breathe contains alcohol these are mice that have been for three days in the vapor box and have now been out of the alcohol Vapor for several hours and they're beginning to show the physical sickness that we recognize as signs of physical dependence and the specific sign that we can see most easily is a specific type of convulsion that the animals get when we pick them up by the tail he pulls his front legs together and spreads his back legs out his head goes back and there's a peculiar Grimace on his face all the time he's trembling when an animal or a person stops taking any drug that he's become addicted to he gets sick really physically sick not just that they want more alcohol but they're physically sick if they don't have it very little is known about the causes of addiction and dependency therefore little can be done to prevent or interrupt dependency by clinical means The Chronic alcoholic is not necessarily a skid row bump but he craves his drink just as much you're not a wino you're an alcoholic hi hi what happened to you what brought you in this time I'm sorry a bunch of kids beat the hell out of me let me have you lie back the alcoholic is so vulnerable to every kind of bacteria every kind of infection that comes along his defense system is usually shot how old are you gosh I don't know have you been eating why you've been drinking this time um maybe a meal a date maybe a meal a day huh well his liver certainly enlarged I Believe I Can Feel the spleen also first slide I want to show you is that of a normal liver you will see by the scale in the left hand corner it's of normal size you'll notice the color of the liver and it's it's reddish brownish color and it's normal Sheen normal liver next slide is a cross section through the same liver in a non-alcoholic patient and you'll see under the microscope the liver cells laid out very nicely in a lobular fashion and this then is a structure microscopically of a normal liver let us take the liver now from a patient who has been drinking many years and this slide shows the liver markedly enlarged very fat Laden it has a different type of a color a purplish Tawny color to it and this liver is beginning to lose much of its function it now continues in his drinking another five ten years we see this appearance the liver is shrunken down markedly scarred very little if any function remaining and finally looking at this under the microscope we see that the normal liver architecture that nice lobular pattern that we saw just before is no longer present instead we see a lot of fibrous tissue a lot of scar tissue and you can well imagine then that there's very little left in the way of function for the individual who had this liver when I try to help a patient on the ward sure he may not have as much gastritis or pancreatitis or liver disease but what do we have to offer that patient in life that is better than his drinking no magic pill no quick cure no force of law can change the fact that many people do drink some of them excessively mothers and fathers people old and young men and women in positions of respect and Leadership I just found I function better with it I didn't I didn't know that I needed it and as I look back on it I don't think I was hooked on it you know I don't think I had reached the point of addiction uh I just simply knew that I felt better with the steady or the occasional drinkers never think of themselves as numbers in statistics but any one even two out of ten drinkers is a potential problem drinker at one point in every alcoholics life you find out you no longer just want it you need it for the problem Drinker Society is providing some help the Alcoholics Anonymous the clinics for alcoholics in major hospitals social services and private counseling in all of the rarest cases though the individual must take the initiative himself when you started drinking continuously I started drinking as a sport and habit when I was 13. why because everyone else did in this Counseling Center not only alcoholics but their children and spouses are invited to participate they are the alcoholics environment their help and understanding are essential people think you're something that you ain't because you really hate what you think you are my dad was drinking them and you know there was you know it was always between you and my mom we were always by ourselves you know you never really had that much on me when you feel all this pressure on you you feel like saying let me just get off my back let's try to get get off my desk did you get into it huh get off my back get off my deck say it louder get off my back get off my back get off my back you can yell at him get off my back I don't know kind of good better huh try something else um since we recognize that alcohol is part of our social scene [Music] the big question is therefore not whether to drink or not to drink okay but are you ready to make the choice between drinking responsibly or not drinking at all foreign So today we're just alienating everybody um sorry about that sorry about the uh liver footage and the bit of the downer there uh I started off with some great uh footage of people drinking and then uh Evangelical Minister talking about the evils of
