lunchtime streaming show where we start start off with some challenging visual imagery and hopefully we will get back to something that's not so um hard to watch uh I think it's time for rain enjoy this whole series The Wonder Walk series there's no narration it just shows you um imagery that's meant to provoke discussion at the end and then the teacher would ask questions and then you would explore whatever the thing is and also they often have wonderful synth soundtracks um and that was pretty great uh and really interesting and soothing it's like eating baby food it's like um just kind of you know makes you feel warm and everything anyways uh so behind me behind me I have a film set up I know many of you are looking to swap jobs uh and so this is a film that explores a dynamic uh field which is still viable today actually um it's bookkeeping occupation and opportunities enjoy thank you [Music] foreign [Music] history tells us that man is always engaged in some form of record-keeping yes even primitive man Babylonians kept their records on moist clay tablets the tablets were baked in the sun until hard then stored in a safe place now the ancient Egyptians kept records on paper or Papyrus as it was known then the wealth of Egypt was kept in numerous warehouses it took an army of scribes to record the movement of goods in and out of these warehouses [Music] the scribes turned in their reports to the pharaoh's treasurer a scribe's job depended on neatness and accuracy [Music] ascribe's life depended on neatness and accuracy very much like present-day accountants the treasurer prepared monthly reports which he presented to the pharaoh yes it was the Romans who put an end to 4 000 years of fumbling around with clay tablets and clumsy Scrolls the Romans arranged parchment or Papyrus sheets in book fashion to make what they called a codex well this certainly was a boon to Roman accountants now a daily record of money paid out and taken in could be kept neatly in one place and in case someone should ask how's business the accountant kept the book with him at all times from this of course we get the term bookkeeping [Music] at the decline of the Roman Empire invading barbarians who specialized in sacking pillaging and being rude immediately recognize the important role of accountants and gave them jobs [Music] well it was during the 11th century that a marvelous thing happened yes Marco Polo brought back spaghetti and firecrackers from China he also brought back a lot of business to his home City Venice [Music] soon trade with the Far East became very active everybody and his brother was going into business after a few years of frantic foreign trade the Venetian Merchants found it necessary to modify their crude systems of bookkeeping different methods of bookkeeping led to frequent misunderstandings so in 1494 Lucas pacholi a fry a fry driven by the din of a thousand squabbling merchants formalized a system of bookkeeping called The Venetian method 500 years later businessmen are using essentially the same system however have developed their own highly individual methods relying more on memory than method the housewife can't afford to rely on her memory it's important that she stay within her family budget to do so she must keep an accurate record of what she spends Supermarket runs smoothly because it keeps a close check on everything it stocks and sells foreign how much bookkeeping is involved in the life of a rubber tire [Music] the sale of one tire may be recorded in the books of several businesses the manufacturer the wholesaler and the retailer then quite often that same tire is sold again as a retread [Music] foreign [Music] how much bookkeeping is involved in his life among other things he has to keep tabs on house payments insurance property tax income tax and a dozen other payments [Music] [Music] just like a business a family must know what it owes and what it owns through bookkeeping he can budget his income so that there is enough money in reserve for emergencies [Music] how long will it be until you will have to make financial decisions foreign all high schools provide the opportunity to learn the basics of bookkeeping thousands of different parts go into the building of a ship thank you every rivet steel beam and plate must be accounted for a shipyard employs hundreds of skilled workers records must be kept at the number of hours worked at every stage of building [Applause] getting out the payroll is a big job in itself [Music] whether you're building ships or manufacturing simple fishing floats you have to keep accurate records [Music] it takes a lot of people to keep a big business running smoothly the accounting department plays an important part in all businesses [Music] thank you jobs in this department range from typist to accountant [Music] typing and the use of Office Machines is very important [Music] most accounting departments today use a wide variety of Business Machines a knowledge of Business Machines and typing is very important not only in bookkeeping but in many phases of business the airline industry for example employs many people with bookkeeping skills job keeping track of the thousands of Travelers who fly to all parts of the world every day [Music] Lions have a special problem two or three different airlines May split one fare when a passenger transfers from one airline to another you can imagine the bookkeeping involved computers and other modern equipment helped to handle the tremendous tasks thank you computers are also used for the storage and retrieval of information on the basis of this information a company can plan its future activities funny thing about computers though they're only as accurate as the information fed into them foreign the business executive is constantly faced with making important decisions he can only make decisions wisely if he has the correct information facts and figures business activities touch the lives of everyone and in your day-to-day life you'll be making financial decisions [Music] every well-run business depends on accurate record keeping there is a wide range of jobs open to those with bookkeeping skills keeping will be an invaluable asset whatever career you choose [Music] foreign [Music] [Laughter] I mean animating the topic I don't know if that actually really really helps things but yeah there you go what do we got oh speaking of money here's a weird Centron film called money taxes and Imagination enjoy [Music] thank you we can dig it out of the ground or Panet from Mountain Streams or turn it out on a printing press it's all money it seems to be in plentiful Supply yet most of us never seem to have enough of it what is money anyway in some places people seem to manage buying and selling with very little of it in others they seem to need money by the truckload but what is it what a modern John Doe Pays His income taxes exactly what is it he sends to Uncle Sam how many dozen stuff bills or coins into the envelope and if he gets a refund Uncle Sam doesn't send John a sack of gold or silver what they actually exchange are signatures on pieces of paper yet we all agree that money has changed hands what is money exactly well it depends a great deal upon where you are and when for instance the lightest money we know about was the feather money of the new Hebrides imagine if John Doe happened to live in the new Hebrides a number of years ago he would be paying his taxes in feathers whereas on the island of Yap he would have paid off in large stones Texas here are heavy man I mean heavy he should complain in ancient Salon all money was based on the value of an elephant sir Ralph hawtry a British Economist said that money is definable primarily by the use and the purposes which it serves well we know its three main purposes it is used for barter or trade it helps us to compare the value of things knowing the market price of beef a farmer can figure out how many cattle he must sell to get a truck and it's a way of storing our buying power if we don't use it today we can put it away and use it later those are some of its purposes but what it actually physically is can be most anything in our minds money is what we pay taxes with but there were times when taxes were paid in human beings when the ottoman Turks captured parts of Europe they enlarged their army by imposing attacks on every Christian family of one boy out of five the tax boys were taken away and trained for life in the Sultan's Army in ancient Greece and Rome you paved with your own service every citizen was a soldier in war each served and supplied his own weapons at his own expense in King Charlemagne's time landowners were required to furnish mounted men in numbers relative to the size of their Estates Sir John [Music] 19. according to this form the king set out I'm entitled to one deduction that's right how did you figure that out I took it over to Sir block [Music] in England they taxed land and houses in the 18th century Tax Collectors judged the rental value of a house by going inside and Counting the number of hearths or fireplaces but the housewives did not take kindly to the intrusion so England passed the window tax that way the assessor could stay at a safe distance outside and just count the number of Windows the more windows the higher the taxes 49 Windows oh come on this is outrageous at one time in America you could actually pay your taxes with these now most of us probably think of wampum as something early traders use to rip off the Indians but for a while Wampum was actually legal tender in some New England states it was made from the shells of saltwater snails and strung into beads and other ornamental items see six white beads or three black ones equaled one penny after 1649 Massachusetts refused to accept Wampum and payment of taxes so the trouble was it could be made by anybody who could polish a snail shell and if you stepped on it it broke but want them was ornamental and in fact money and ornamentation were long related gold and silver were first valued for their ornamental qualities [Applause] even when metal coinage was introduced many coins were made with holes in them so that they could be more easily strung together as ornaments gold has retained its value image from ancient times to the present day why scarcity played a part even today the amount of gold available represents only a small fraction of the world's money needs but there are other good reasons for valuing gold can be we melted dozens of times and remain exactly the same gold is not tarnish under normal use it does not rust it can be buried in the ground or left on the bottom of the ocean for centuries without seriously deteriorating and gold is malleable it can be shaped and worked with ease so it has always been a favorite of artists and Craftsmen furthermore its appeal is universal John Doe may have trouble palming off seashells and feathers in some areas but he can buy with gold almost anywhere the early problem with using gold as money was that it could be debased and every time it was exchanged it had to be weighed and even then a merchant couldn't be sure when a bit of lead or sand had been added well as a solution to this problem coinage developed the gold or silversmith or the state that struck a coin assured the public that each piece contained the specified amount of gold or silver but since coins were often crudely formed nothing prevented the unscrupulous from shaving a bit from The Edge before passing the coin along a European trick was to use a cross along with fancy Edge Designs so one could tell at a glance if a section had been cut away and that is the reason for the serrated edge on many modern coins easier to detect tampering in any case there were never enough gold and silver coins to go around so almost anything rare or needed continued to pass for money now this is Chinese tea money a compressed block of tea appropriately stamped you could spend it or store it away do almost anything with it I suppose as long as you kept it out of hot water in our own country coins were extremely scarce in the colonial period so Goods or Commodities were often used to pay debts and taxes iron nails were money or the equivalent of money the settlers cut them from rods and shaped them individually so they were rare and valuable what were they worth well we still called this a 10 penny nail which once meant a hundred or ten pennies now that was a worthwhile sum in those days in fact people burned down so many old cabins to salvage iron Nails From the Ashes that laws had to be passed to discourage the practice in various American colonies Furs hides fish tar Lumber peas grains and livestock passed for money it's a fact that in the early days it Harvard a student could pay his tuition with livestock or meat I want to study theater paying in Commodities created the problem of bulk a five dollar tax in New Hampshire might require giving the government two thousand feet of lumber while the same tax in New Jersey could call for 50 pounds of butter on a hot day the state assets of New Jersey could melt away fast well naturally given a choice the people paid their taxes with anything that had spoiled mildewed or lost value one state had to pass an order saying that taxes could no longer be paid in sick cattle corn was commonly used for money Massachusetts ruled that corn should pass as legal payment for all debts unless coin or Beaver skins were specified tobacco was money the first law passed in Jamestown Virginia made tobacco the official currency and Virginia's first tax was a poll tax of one pound of tobacco per voter in Maryland taxes and the salaries of ministers were paid in tobacco foreign taxes for running state governments were hard to collect when Governor Johnson of North Carolina died in 1752 the people still owed him 13 years back salary a type of paper money common in those days was the crop note or tobacco note simply a note stating that you had so much grain or tobacco in a public Warehouse the notes could then be exchanged for money even earlier in history as World Trade increased people needed more and lighter weight forms of money so a system had developed wherein precious metals could be left stored with goldsmiths or in Banks and the receipts or paper notes could be exchanged instead these were simply banknotes redeemable and precious metals this paper money was easier to carry and handle and gained wide popularity Banks soon discovered that people did not cash in all banknotes immediately gold and silver tended to remain in safekeeping while the notes passed from hand to hand the banks therefore could issue more notes than they actually had gold or silver to cover thus increasing the supply of money or exchange tokens this worked fine except when it was miscalculated and too many John does brought notes in for exchange in which case the gold reserves would be drained and some note holders left with worthless paper such bank failures eventually led to States and Nations assuming control over the issuance of notes but even so until the 1930s the value of most of those notes was closely linked to their being exchangeable for precious metals in most of the world well this is no longer true the dollars that we use today are not printed guarantees that there is that much gold or silver available what is this money then what is it worth precise explanations vary but it boils down to the fact that it is worth what people agree it is worth but then the same thing could be said of gold a paper dollar represents an effect a share in the total resources and production power of a Nation [Music] it is equal in value to so much wheat or cotton or Fabrics or personal services or whatever though exactly how much of any one item it will purchase constantly varies the value some economists point out is backed by the government's power to tax so when today's John Doe Pays His income tax what he is giving the government is a share of what he has produced or of the energy he has expended in working or of the knowledge for which he has been paid from exchanging goods and trinkets to exchanging medals to exchanging banknotes we developed to where Bank deposits became money with the personal check we literally write our own money it entitles the recipient to a share of the signers bank deposit money may even be just a promise with a credit card the buyer May barter for the Merchant's Goods with funds she will not have in the bank until some future date and has not even earned yet what will money be in the future well it may be invisible perhaps only magnetic impulses or holes punched in a computer tape money might Simply Be what happens when we press a button that's the wrong button [Music] whatever the form it takes money will continue to be the tool we use for comparing the values of diverse items and activities and settling the difference and it will always be related to our material ambitions our productivity our transactions and our desires [Music] our block that's crazy um so I know that film was all over the map but hopefully that last little segment of the the guy with the uh computer computer was made it all worthwhile I mean that's that's a animated gif of I ever saw one um so we did Bingo uh home movie day bingo I think earlier in the week um and uh I just wanted to useful and people hold on to Sharpies longer than anything else and they're better than those crappy pins that uh Kodak gives out those things you click them three times and then explode and then finally this is the the big deal here is a metal USB um film reel that's filled with films a variety of films some of which we've shown and some of the stuff that we have not shown um this is a limited edition because these are outrageously expensive to make and so I made a small batch of them just to see I was like yeah I'm not gonna make those anymore because those are really crazy um so anyways that's what's being sent out to our two winners uh Miss Cynthia and Rick K I think is that right McKay I apologize if I got that wrong anyways they're going out today okay um some people were disappointed that I showed a safety film yesterday and I didn't show shake hands with danger the remix uh this film I'm going to show today is certainly going to bring this up as this is a 1960s version of shake hands with Danger made by uh either OSHA or the mining safety things it's made by a government agency so this is safety Consciousness enjoy [Music] foreign safety Consciousness is very important in the prevention of accidents in all industrial operations safety Consciousness may be defined as awareness of Hazards and alertness to Danger [Music] O2 people are exactly alike in personality and character nor do they have the same attitude towards safety safety Consciousness must be developed in people development of proper attitudes depends upon the individual the following scene show parents talking to their sons two different individuals who are getting ready to go out have a good time at the party Mike take care of your brother and be careful driving be back home at midnight okay Jeff you heard your father come home with Mike oh come on Mom you're always talking to me like I'm a baby I'm old enough to take care of myself and I wanted to come home okay Jeff you've been told when you're expected back if you can't understand maybe you should stay home okay just as Jim and Pete have different attitudes and react differently to instructions a Workman also has a different individual attitude good or bad towards safety and accepts instructions in a different manner than his buddy foreign had a good attitude towards safety but needed further training [Music] he was eager to learn about the hazards connected with his job at and readily accepted safe dang it um the comments have spoken and uh it looks like I have already seen this before I did I shut it on my birthday dang it all right I apologize uh what do I got instead um give me a second I was busy eating a delicious torta um from um gym Taco Jim's tacos gym tacos gym Tim tacos gym all right it's another episode where skip is typing that you love all right we're just going to go back to the original Source material in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] [Music] hey get down from there now [Music] hey turn it off what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mince meat by now what have I told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well I told him not to touch anything all right I guess I wasn't thinking y'all weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety hair shake hands with danger shake hands with danger need a guy who ought to know I used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger Joe [Music] shake hands were danger find it anywhere you choose be careless for a moment spend a lifetime with the Blues [Applause] [Music] Earth movement machines are designed for safety but they're big enough to hide a man about dead you could have killed me this mechanic is lucky he's able to complain he should have protected himself by removing the key and putting a do not operate tag on the controls anytime you pick up a wrench reach for a control use a grease gun grab a welding torch or work on any machine while forgetting safety you're shaking hands with Danger all right now you take the loader up behind the hill where they're working now I'll drive up on the road and I'll meet you at the top all right okay uh but you know Cliff I never operated this model before well all right all I have to do is back it up and then let it down nice and easy like you you want me to do it I don't know I can handle there's no sweat there we can take care okay all right I'll see you later [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] what this man didn't know was that the operator had left the lift lever in the raised position so the arms would rise automatically when the engine started qualified operator would have known better the man shouldn't have tried to perform as an operator when he wasn't one all right well you were kidding me you said you didn't know how to run their things Chuck Hamlin is no beginner before he begins changing an o-ring on an excavator boom he checks oil temperature down engine off bucket grounded hydraulic lock engaged okay you'll have that O-ring installed in minutes [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] take a chance that you won't fall you'll save yourself for a minute but you may damn well lose it all [Music] foreign [Music] wherever possible the stick should be extended in the boom Lord so the work can be done at ground level finding that impossible the next man used the service truck as a safe work platform climbing with tools can create a hazard use the steps and the grab irons keep at least three points of contact two feet and one hand unencumbered any shortcuts and you're inviting injury in fact taking shortcuts is often a quick road to trouble for example consider what happened to Harry Sanders Harry has come to work with a problem his son is having a football injured knee operated on this morning Harry wants to finish this job and take a couple hours off to visit his son the operator has complained that the scraper is shipped into slow and the controls are sluggish in a hurry Harry pulls only one axle the service manual says to pull both axles and disconnect steering but Harry knows with one axle removed and the differential unlocked the machine shouldn't move he's taken this shortcut before while waiting for the operator to return Harry starts the machine in order to judge the problem while he waits for the engine to warm Aries thoughts drift to worries about his son thank you the accelerator feels stiff so then he checks the feel of the service brakes his attention is divided while thinking about his son his hands and feet go through motions he believes have become automatic in this absent-minded State he unconsciously starts to steer jams his foot on the differential lock and the machine takes off foreign [Applause] lucky for the stunned operator the machine stops itself Harry is only bruised but in a crowded area he could have killed someone because he ignored safe procedure to save a few minutes work now most people have days when they come to work with worries hangovers or distractions those are times for being doubly cautious when the body's on the job but the mind is elsewhere it's danger time Glenn Greenwood was victim of another kind of mental Hazard ego how you doing hot shot I had stuck in your tight you get that pin driver nobody got this drift just give it a whack Glenn knows the risk of striking hard against badly chip metal but he's wearing safety glasses and there's a macho thing involved here Glenn doesn't want his friend to sneer at him for being overly cautious so Glenn shakes hands with Danger [Music] [Music] maybe his friend would have laughed if Glenn had insisted upon playing it safe but he sure as hell isn't laughing now with tools the time to make sure you have a safe ending is before you start using them they should be the right tools for the job and in safe condition if Glenn's friend had ground off that mushroomed face taking care of the tools he uses he could have prevented that accident some Old-Timers think accidents happen only to Green horns hey red got it let them learn the hard way they say I'll let them learn the hard way can be an attitude that results in a serious injury one word of caution from the old-timer would have saved a lot of pain and lost work time and even the old-timer can lapse into carelessness the safety Gap is correct when he starts but he doesn't think about how much he's grinding down the wheel [Music] he gets by with it on that longer piece fingers aren't the only things to think about when working with track kind of like outside over there over there there it goes what happened a near Miss due to the mechanics failure to restrain the track before he unloosened it at a high point here they're about to push a high sprocketed machine from an old set of tracks onto a new set with both tracks removed the machine is free to roll on a slight grade it may just take off everybody if they'd had an operator in the machine he could have stopped it by dropping the Ripper or blade they should have planned proper blocking and restraint but better still they should change one track at a time then there can't be a roll away got going here huh hurry and failure to heat safety warnings can also endanger those new and routine maintenance despite constant warnings about hot oil and pressure systems some optimists always thinks he can get his hand away in time [Applause] got somebody help me needn't have happened the temperature gauges pressure gauges and the safety caps on cooling systems are there to prevent accidents from occurring the people who shake hands with danger are those who don't learn beforehand what they're getting into like the owner whose brake rotor chamber has been losing air pressure hey Sam I got the brake chamber off the loader I gotta run into the dealers to get some repair parts well I'm gone will you take it apart to save us some time okay Bill at this point the service manuals call for the insertion of a threaded tool to hold the spring Force Sam hasn't read the manual he doesn't know he's releasing a force it might be as high as 1750 pounds foreign whether you're working on anything from nitrogen accumulators to inflated tires it pays to know the kind of power you're dealing with beforehand and warnings about gasoline are as old as use of the fuel yet somewhere somebody is always deciding it won't hurt to use it as a cleaning fluid just this one time oh he'll empty the pan very carefully just as soon as he finds a rag to wipe off the carburetor meanwhile the fuel keeps vaporizing [Applause] it's possible to become overconfident about handling dangerous materials a good reason why safety instructions should be repeated at frequent intervals oddly enough it isn't lack of familiarity with a job that causes most accidents often it's the routineness of the work that makes a person overconfident now Bill Myers is changing buckets a job he's done at least a hundred times if he were new at it bill would be watching and thinking about every step now it's so routine that caution has been dulled the hole is dry the pin won't slide in there's no stick or swab in the grease can but he could surely find one if he took the time to search around this is the moment that Split Second when a man decides between being safe or shaking hands with Danger [Music] [Applause] foreign bill could have had the linking members moved apart and greased them separately it would have been a nuisance but Bill Myers would give anything to be able to go back and do it the right way hey Ernie yeah I got your pose off of the Dozer blade here why don't you put this boat in that end but I'm going to take this into the shop all right I'll get it done [Music] thank you [Music] he should have blocked both push arms and he should never have relied upon anything as unstable or crushable as building blocks improper blocking and failure to block are major causes of crushing accidents we're dealing with enormous weight and we should never depend upon Hydraulics alone to hold it up can you position this truck bed was in without these locking prison and you working underneath the truck bed and it has failed you'd have had it these pins should be in place as such I know it's always important to look out for the other guy safety is always in the hands of people on the job the warnings and cautions are there for those who heed them [Music] safety procedures are spelled out and Illustrated in lubrication and maintenance guides operators guides and service manuals foreign the protection is there in machine design and safety devices [Music] excuse safety instruction emphasizing knowledge and awareness prevents accidents by encouraging safety consciousness and protective clothing helps Shield a body from The Unexpected the human element remains it can lend itself to safety or turn a routine situation into a dangerous one [Applause] I gotta get this [ __ ] out of here that engine's not running I don't care if it's long or not you see them trucks and trucks got to come through here I want this out of here right now and we all know that the service man doesn't always work under ideal conditions mechanic Bob Murray is an excavator with a dead engine it won't start which means the brakes are locked which means it's going to sit right here until Bob disconnects the final drives then he'll have a machine he can move [Music] [Applause] what he should also have but doesn't is a second vehicle to provide braking [Music] shake hands with danger hurry up and get it done takes two men to move this saying but I'll make do with one [Music] [Applause] now Bob isn't dumb he wouldn't try Towing it all the way to the shop without help but he just wants to drag it a hundred yards or so and get that foreman off his back [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] Murray will never again tow a freewheeling machine without having control over to break it Bob was lucky others were not shake hands with Danger [Music] shake hands with Danger shake hands with Danger shake hands with Danger shake hands with danger and friends I Used to Know compared to them I'm lucky to be just three-fingered Joe [Music] alright so sometimes you have to just show the original um and because I thought that I had not shown that safety film prior
