foreign so I was greeted this morning oh let me just say hi I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films made in the past uh and sometimes made by a former communist regimes um about fairly innocuous uh topics such as so yesterday I got some films uh some Russian films from somewhere in the Ukraine and so there were Soviet films that were made in the late 70s I think one of them was storing AV materials one was a fire safety film called they all live and then finally they speak English and I am guessing I because you know Facebook they they tell you something and then they're like you're live thing is is basically um restricted for 24 hours so I'm in jail basically but I can still post but I just can't do live streams so I just basically posted the YouTube link um and I'm they don't say why they basically uh the only thing I can infer is that they I see that they took down yesterday's show uh was it because I said the word Ukraine a bunch I don't know was it because there was Russian language in there I don't know but um anyways uh so it was gone and uh so last night I watched with Katrina my wife um that these speak English again and uh I gotta say no regrets in showing that that film was so nuts and I slowed it down uh uh to see if I can understand more words and I think I was at a 75 rate but still uh it it was really really nuts uh I might slow it down some more and then eventually post it uh because it's clear that the kids who are saying these things they just wrote memorized it like and so it's just kind of like when you were a kid and you had to memorize a poem like when I had to memorize uh the intro to um uh Canterbury Tales in Middle English and so it just the pacing of it doesn't work right and the teacher is doing like this and it's so fast um so anyways I'm in jail so I figured I should show this film uh about being in jail uh this is not owned by Disney it was distributed by Disney which is kind of crazy um but uh it's pretty great nonetheless uh let me change the title here it's three days in county jail so enjoy [Applause] foreign [Music] thank you very much [Music] people if you're carrying any clothing put it on all your open packs of cigarettes matches any open tobacco products anything you eat or two on throw it down on the floor all the rest of your property that you've got on you holding your hands I want to see your wristbands and I want to see your property when you walk through this gate step in pull in the cell you're going to sell put your matches on the floor set all your property up here on the desk [Music] take your envelope step inside the cell do not open until you're instructed to do so stepping against Warriors Stadium hey gentlemen I want you to put those envelopes on a red line take everything out of your pockets put it on the red line unbuckle your belts undo the first snap on your pants turn your front pockets inside out take your shoes and socks off to them on a red line pick your socks up reverse it from the way they are right now don't shake them don't problem just reverse them from the way they are right now then hold them in front of you by the toes put your socks now behind you on the floor the gentleman pick up your shoes by the toes upon the heels vigorously on a floor until I say stop trying to beat the heels together now help him out dump everything out of them put your shoes behind you on the floor we just got a penalties drag all your property back between your feet drag everything's there I'll step out to the red I've just been doing a bunch of odd jobs and those people wouldn't care if they never saw me again [Music] yeah I know what I said when I left that's right now I need you listen bear can be very high I've never been in jail before that's right that's where it rubbed my nose in it [Music] it's on the back how tall are you five nine how much do you weigh 140. how old are you 21. where were you born Wheaton Illinois I want you to drape them around your neck to strip down nude like the day you were born [Music] foreign [Music] foreign put your hands down bend over at the waist or jump brush your numbers are above your head on your left [Music] foreign yeah what you doing that was an accident what I ran into some old man in the crosswalk I still can't figure out what happened would you kill him I don't know if I did it won't tell me anything what the hell it's an accident yeah but I took off it caught me brother didn't run felony man he killed him it's manslaughter it's waited for five years of the joint hell don't ever run from the man even if he didn't do anything oh you're drunk or what yeah I just never saw the old guy who doesn't do that to you I could barely a thing no I don't think so call my dad but he doesn't care what the hell happens to me you get to like you here things are bad once you get used to it my name is Donahue [Music] watch the game he's coming back call me down all right step in foreign [Music] shoes who would you blame doogie's dad did post bails for him and he was released pending trial but the jury found him guilty of felony drunk driving and felony hit and run with bodily injury he was sentenced to State Prison but because he had no previous arrest record the judge suspended sentence provided do we spend one year in the county jail [Music] once again he's coming back the victim of doogie's crime survived but he'll be placed on County welfare and confined to a wheelchair from indefinite period this is typical the plight of a victim is very often ignored or forgotten while thousands of dollars are spent in an attempt to rehabilitate the offender Mr Dunn yes I'm Steve Condon I'm on the jail classification board I have your records and I'd like to explain some of the options you may have during your time here of course the tax payers of this County thousands of dollars to keep you here so you're going to get a chance to pay some of that back and maybe learn something that'll be useful to you while you're here there are several ways to go in this first tell me something about yourself what interested you most on the outside what kind of work did you do well I didn't really do anything important I had some jobs but nothing that really interested me I I just never grabbed a hold of anything that really turned me on you know how about school are you at my records there sure but I was hoping you'd tell me more about yourself than just a dad on these papers I was hoping we'd be able to communicate more so I find out what motivated you or what doesn't motivate you I need to know something about you in order to make a suitable recommendation well I uh I dropped out of high school it it all just seems so stupid to me I guess I haven't got much brains or anything so I cut out got a job I I just want to get away from everything I just wanted to be left alone I know your father raised your bail do you keep in touch with he never even came to my trial how would you feel if you could get that high school diploma this County you live in runs it on a ranch it's part of the County custody system if you perform your duties and study hard on your off hours you can get that high school diploma that's just one of the options well what are the others the classification officer described the vocational training opportunities offered at the honor Ranch he decided to recommend Doogie for the ranch but he warned him to stay out of trouble no back talk and no fights a lot today and coming over [Music] [Music] I told you to stick with me and I'd see it taken care of if you were Doogie what would you do [Music] do we remember the classification officer's warning and he did not get into a fight in a few days he was transported to the honor Ranch Donahue was placed in the maximum security unit however because of his repeated antisocial Behavior [Music] the idea of working on a farm appeal to do you learned how to handle heavy equipment we'd like to work out on the fields even in the confinement of the county jail system Doogie found opportunities for vocational training opportunities he ignored while he was still in school the prospects of the trade and a good job on the outside excited it he discovered he was a good mechanic and liked to work on the machines [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] the more Doogie learned the more confidence he developed in himself he remembered what the classification officer had told him back at the central jail he decided to go after and get his high school diploma do you have any problems in Reading no not really okay do you mind reading a paragraph for me this last paragraph here out loud the president of the United States was speaking his audience comprised two thousand the first part of speech that we ought to know about is a noun does anybody know what a noun is all right A noun is a word that names a person a place or a thing for instance Bill names a person Los Angeles names a place foreign [Music] to the authorities the chances of the average inmate returning to jail or prison are unfortunately good what a great American poet once told his students to take what is given and make it over your way doogie's life whatever he makes of it will be the result of the decisions he will make actions he will take will he succeed on the today we're going to wrap up the parts of speech you all have really worked hard on this please me who knows what a noun is Dougie come on up here Yogi corresponded regularly with the man he'd run over and injured he promised to do everything he could to help after he'd served his time in the county jail [Music] foreign company so Dennis Dugan uh I would say he's a character actor he shows up in a lot of uh 70s television and uh yeah so that was a kind of a change of pace and that's what Facebook jail is all uh all about so behind me I have another film it's from the United States uh it is an earpie film which is going to feature our good friend James Brill and I feel like that this is actually a advertisement for erpee films so I looked at the year and let's see if you guys can figure it out it's pretty early so here's bring the world to the classroom enjoy [Music] I had a splice break sorry um let's learn about amphetamines I've been using amphetamines for the past three years when I was 17 I weighed 210. now I weigh 168. I went to the doctor's office because mom thought maybe I had a weight problem the doctor gave me some amphetamines weight pills well I I took a few too many and felt groovy so I started taking too many every day once you start tripping on amphetamines you you fall into a group of people where you meet all kinds of connections especially if you've been using something before that to get a bigger kick faster I started fixing crystals methadrine speed gave me confidence like I could do just about anything you're more confident or you wouldn't do anything stupid like jumping off a building you just feel real your heart's beating real good you feel like you're home because you can rap but talk a lot more get dates much easier too I was losing weight rapidly sometimes I stayed up six or seven days when you're up you you don't eat or sleep and you get to where your mind goes blank you don't even know what's happening you're you're wired my my biggest trip on speed was repairing radios I I'd start out with one radio and then I'd have to take another radio apart to get a tube or something and before I knew it I had a second radio torn apart and would have to get a third radio and I'd tear that radio apart too and then I'd fall asleep by the time I'd fallen out I'd ruined three radios you know what to do with the first radio but you can't do anything a lot of people say you couldn't get hooked on crystals but I got strung out when I was down you know like like if I lay down to go to sleep after being up about a week I'd wake up with cramps feeling low and couldn't get out of bed I'd have to fix in order to get up they they roll you physically your skin gets discolored your teeth get rotten I'd always be nervous if I didn't fix oh a lot of people say it's it's just emotional or psychological but I I did get physically dependent on them [Music] foreign [Music] but its wonders are so many that no single mind can learn about all of them even in a lifetime of study many Educators however have found that the instructional sound film can bring the world vividly into the classroom and significantly increase the quantity and quality of individual learning and that means any classroom however remote furthermore the sound film surmounts many obstacles other than remoteness for example there are everyday occurrences which cannot be observed by the human eye but the motion picture can penetrate both density and opaqueness and permit every pupil to see such wonders as blood corpuscles streaming through capillaries here we actually see how the root of a plant grows wherever movements occur so slowly that it is impossible to observe them directly time lapse Motion Pictures can tell the story clearly within a few seconds slow motion pictures make rapid movements more understandable thus the coordinated movements of this pole vaulter are studied by students in their classroom seats better than from the best seats in the stadium again classroom or laboratory demonstrations cannot be seen from the same position by all often resulting in confusion but carefully prepared sound films give every pupil the best possible view of a situation by ordinary methods of subject matter presentation written and spoken words alone poses numerous meanings and each requires specific learning but the sound film combining elements of both Sight and Sound provides experiences on which can be based a better understanding of words the elements themselves are obstacles to learning spring rains the rigors of summer heat autumnal changes and winter snows each restrict the kind of study activity in which pupils May engage the sound film provides learning experiences regardless of the seasons our sense of hearing has great limitations but an earthy film amplifies the sound of nerve impulses causing a muscle to contract other films give to the classroom sounds which are audible but which however many pupils never hear calls of shy Forest Birds the role of great cataracts voices of farm life songs and languages of Faraway peoples only the sound film captures them for all to study Mariah animated photography clarifies difficult Concepts and creates Lasting Impressions witness the four Cycles in the operation of the gasoline engine intake compression explosion exhaustion intake compression explosion exhaustion moreover even the wealthiest colleges and universities cannot provide unlimited facilities for study and experimentation Motion Pictures can bring to the classrooms of all schools the instructional facilities of the world's finest Laboratories museums or planetariums other types of observations may not be made because of the dangers involved the sound film eliminates physical hazards in learning [Music] how easily this medium overcomes time and space limitations this scene accurately represents the movements of the sun toward the star of Viga at the rate of 12 miles per second over a period of 50 000 years another value of the instructional sound film is its power to stimulate and convey meaning to pupils who find it difficult to learn in a controlled experiment with herpes sound films groups with low intelligence learned more in proportion to their ability to learn bended groups with higher intelligence however both groups made substantially greater learning gains than comparable groups without Little Pigs and sheep shorn of wool for our winter clothes let the child learn about the modern air travel by studying the film an airplane trip let him learn the ways of Southwestern Indian boys and girls as portrayed by the film Navajo children how many grown-ups have seen inside a squirrel's nest with the film gray squirrel primary children may study squirrel life in detail while with the production robin redbreast they commune with a family of baby robins high up in their nest at the intermediate grade level another series of earpie films dealing with human geography allows the farmer problems of our Inland agricultural workers may be studied how simple it is with the earthy film water power to see how the energy of Niagara Falls is transformed into electrical power is before Encyclopedia Britannica made uh films uh this encyclopedicated Britannica at this point was actually uh published and owned by Sears Roebuck and there was somebody that convinced um Sears to sell it to University of Chicago and at the same time they also purchased Derby from Western Electric and James Brill our good friend who narrated this and everything else came along uh but James Brill was doing stuff back in the 30s uh and supposedly he was an artist um but you know it was also a narrator and so we have shown some of these really early urbi films that existed before Encyclopedia Britannica bought them so somebody asked in the comments like if you weren't watching educational films how would you watch this well you would have a Salesman a regional salesman would come by to your school board or library and say hey uh let me show you something and so um this is before Coronet existed uh and this is before the war and so World War II was really uh an amazing time as far as educational films went because the uh our army signal Corps basically realized that 60 millimeter film was an amazing uh way to teach um it was portable you could get very detailed and you know for the reasons that we just saw in this urbi film uh and so what happened was there were all these projectors made there's all these films made then after World War II all the projectors were donated or sold to schools and then Coronet and Encyclopedia Britannica who then owned earpie um they were able to Market like hey you guys have projectors well guess what we have educational films and so um this is kind of an interesting early thing uh and I was looking at Encyclopedia Britannica films on Wikipedia and I'm always a little wary of Wikipedia but I can you can see where the sources are and I trust the sources but they said one of the most popular films was The Adventures of bunny rabbit which we have shown on here um supposedly kids absolutely loved it um and that's you know that's pretty great and supposedly some of the early animal films were very popular in that regard so there you go all right so I got uh one last film for you for today um this is Portrait of the Vandal enjoy [Music] hey it's frisbees all right come on [Music] come on [Music] nobody ever used the canopy all right [Music] foreign [Music] vandalism means willful or senseless destruction on but vandals don't usually think of themselves as willful or senseless and most of the time they're not most of the time they're nice enough people who know all about right and wrong but sometimes even a nice person plays the sneak becomes a coward who's afraid to strike out at whatever is really bugging him and often there's a connection between what he does and what he does it too if a teacher makes him mad he throws a rock at the school if a girl offends him he takes it out on her bike hey you guys I don't think we ought to do this sneaky come on I don't think we ought to do this underhanded you guys don't you hate Debbie yeah whenever you walk down the hall you say hi Debbie he just sticks her head up in the air and ignores you she's so stuck up I've been waiting a long time to do something to her you guys this is dumb because Debbie's not even gonna know we did it that's easy just finding something to write with him we'll leave him a message come on nobody's here Debbie Debbie dear guys a vandal is often a puppet a dummy without a mind of his own he can get himself into serious trouble because he's willing to go along a Pinocchio but somebody else pulls the strings thinks he's done something smart or he feels so guilty that he has to get it off his chest sooner or later he ends up telling everything to somebody and then the news gets around hello yes well yes department they want us to bring Kurt down there current they said that you were involved in that horrible incident at the Bricker House no I don't know maybe someone's trying to get me in trouble or something a vandal is a liar if he wasn't before he becomes one when he realizes what he's done are you telling maybe for a split second he is only lying to himself pretending it didn't happen wouldn't call it but it doesn't stop there dad I swear to you he lies to his parents I don't think I could bear it if you were involved in anything like that it'll be simple enough to clear it up when we get to the police department I appreciate you bringing the boys and he lies to everyone else as long as he thinks he can Bluff his way out would you mind looking at me Kurt son is only one way you and your friends are going to keep your stories straight that's by telling the truth I've already talked to Joe and John and their parents now I need to hear it from you everything you did that day okay I don't know what they told you but I wasn't with him that day well that's hard to believe you boys are always together you're always with them or Sean no Wednesday I wasn't how do you know what face up to set things straight okay okay but it wasn't my idea I know we let ourselves get dragged into things sometimes that we occurred maybe the court will take that into consideration and since this is your first offense I think you'll probably get probation but I'm afraid the court will expect you to pay your share of the damages damages yes in this state those who are responsible must pay their share of the damage they've caused but we don't have that kind of money and for nothing for nothing nice enough people who know all about right and wrong up to a point the point where fun becomes destructiveness then a sneak a liar a clod there isn't very much good you can say about a vandal well I was talking to Ellen she just yeah there will be times when you will be in situations like the one the boys in the story were in when you will be part of a group where everybody's feeling good and has energy to burn times when Temptation lies in weight the temptation to do something which will make you think less of yourself when it's all over hey look at all these rocks I got some good ideas with these come on you guys come get some now is the time to figure out how you're going
