than [Music] [Music] I'm Bill Johnson around here they just call me dad I've been trying to read but I just can't seem to do it I keep thinking about today Thanksgiving Day we Johnson's had a good Thanksgiving the best we've ever had and I can't help thinking that what made it better was a feeling a real feeling of thankfulness and that's odd too when you consider the shape things were in when I got home from work yesterday my kids dick and Tommy and Susan were all home from school and of course mother and the baby were there as kids will mine were living tomorrow right along with today looking forward to thank Thanksgiving and like most men I'm glad it was mother instead of me who had to break the news to them tomorrow's Thanksgiving M turkey and dressing and pie and cake and fruit salad and whipped cream and cranberries gee I can hardly wait me too well you know children we've had a lot of expenses this month and well your father and I thought that well the truth of the matter is there just won't be any turkey this year no turkey for Thanksgiving oh I'm going to make a pumpkin pie and we'll have plenty to eat but well we'll just have to get along without turkey mom you don't mean it it won't be Thanksgiving at all even the pilgrims had a feast after all isn't that what thanksgiving's for I don't think it's fair and it was right there that I came in right in the thick of it hello everybody hi hello Mother dick Susan well what's been going on around here what's the matter with everybody anyway mom says we're not going to have any Thanksgiving no turkey no good thing a fat lot we're going to have to be thankful for I don't think you kids really mean that we do too we've always had turkey for Thanksgiving yes and never everybody else no Block's going to have it this year same as always yes we've always had turkey just as a lot of Americans have had it and we'll keep on having it turkey on Thanksgiving is a great American tradition but what you kids are saying makes it sound as if the turkey is the only thing we had to be thankful for well G was no Dad it's not that at all well I know dick with turkey it's easy to lose sight of what Thanksgiving really means and don't think we're just making excuses because we don't have any turkey this year we well we know it'll mean a lot more to us the next time we do have it well sure sure suppose we don't have a bang up Feast we're still a lot better off than the pilgrims that's it dick do you other the kids see what Dick's trying to say turkey or no turkey we've still got all the freedoms and privileges the pilgrims gave us those privileges have come a lot of things things the pilgrims never even dreamed of why we can make a list a mile long why don't we do it but now hold on a minute you've got the idea but it isn't something you can write down like well like a grocery list you've got to feel it down deep before you can really be thankful for anything I tell you what let's do and let's take a little more time to think this over when you get right down to it there are some pretty tough decisions in making up your mind what means the most to you your life sure that's one thing you can't get along without but do you know that there are some places in the world today where you have to get along without just about everything else golly Daddy I guess I kind of got carried away but I'll bet you one thing if we really think over what we have to be thankful for when we sit down to whatever mother fixes to eat tomorrow we'll be one family in America that will really have a Thanksgiving dinner well that's how it got started the Johnson's didn't have any turkey and the kids no I mean everybody likes to make something special out of a special day so we fell back on something as old as the pilgrims toting up the common ordinary blessings that we had to be thankful for that night I'd see dick there building his model airplane and Susan just playing only they weren't just playing they were mulling things over thinking big thoughts for such young heads and as for mother and Tom and baby Janet and and yes me too it was as if we had our eyes open for the first time seeing all the things there were to appreciate in just any Ordinary Day in America when Thanksgiving Day got here we took our places around the table and we were ready and then well we all knew it there are some things you just can't say but everybody in his own way knew what he had to be thankful for and that this was the time to think about it Tom was first I am thankful for getting plenty to eat all the time with extras that count like cookies and milk after school like Mom says I'm hungry all the time anyway and if I didn't live in a country where there is ples who go around goly and I'm thankful for the free public library where I can get books about Adventure Jack London Richard Haliburton gee the way they tell a story it's as good as being there yourself and it's free with only a library card yes Tommy thought about some of the things he ought to be glad for all the time and somehow turkey and trimming seem to matter a whole lot less than he thought they did yesterday well then it was Susan's turn Susan's a happy go-lucky kid you'd never credit her with Thinking Beyond her dolls but she got right into the spirit of it I am thankful we have what we need to wear though mother says it's hard to keep up with us we grow so fast I never thought before how many clothes it takes for all kinds of weather or how it would be to have to do without the right ones I'm glad to be able to go to Sunday school or go to any church I want any Sunday I'm thankful for my mother and daddy that they are here with us that both of them aren't too worried about things to take time to have fun fun with us I'm glad we're a family that families are still important in America I guess dick being the oldest was having some pretty serious thoughts I am thankful for being able to get an education for living where schools all schools open their doors to a guy who wants to learn where school books are studied instead of burned where a guy is rated by how much he knows and the community is rated by how well it teaches him I'm glad I've got a chance to play batting a ball around once in a while stuff like that I'm glad it's fun growing up in America sure baby Janet's too young to understand the big word Thanksgiving she's too little even to tell us the things that make her happy but we can tell and maybe she's thinking about them now maybe she's thinking about the fun of splashing around in the HB and about how good it feels to be clean about playtime with mother and the security she feels in mother's arms and as for mother seems she's always working cooking ironing tending children daylight to dark what does she have to be thankful for I am thankful that my children had the privilege of being born safely and of growing up healthy and strong I'm thankful that I have the privilege of guiding them useful men and women and I'm thankful for all the things our American System makes possible for the Smiths and the Browns and the Johnson's for washing machines hot water out of a tap and a telephone to call the doctor when one of the family is sick a car to get Dad to work yes yes I'm thankful for all the things free people working together can produce I'm thankful that when my neighbor drops in to borrow a cup of flour we've got the right to talk about anything we want to the parent teacher project the new mayor or or Jane Jones hat and last of all I'm truly thankful for the peace of mind that Dad's job brings for knowing that even though there are lots of luxuries we can't afford there still will always be enough to go around for the things we have to have I'm glad Dad doesn't work slave hours that there are evenings and Sundays and vacations when we can all be together that's mother for you grateful for what America means to her family and now for me I've got so many things to be thankful for I'm thankful for this house it may need a coat of paint it has a mortgage but it's ours a place where we can be together in privacy and I'm thankful for the thing that makes this house our home the happiness here not just today or on Christmas morning but on a day-to-day basis all through the year for knowing that a knock on our door means nothing to fear a friend calling or maybe a bill collector or a kid selling magazines you never know what to expect but you can count on one thing it's not going to be some political gangster coming to drag one of us off to jail because we believe in Freedom and I'm glad that that freedom we've got lets me choose the kind of work I like and can do best taking a sluggish motor and making it hum again makes me feel that somebody got to his work or wherever he had to go just because of me and feeling like that gives me a lot of satisfaction and I'm thankful for a newspaper just a few cents worth of printers ink and paper but more valuable than any amount of money because in it the editors got the privilege of printing what he thinks and I've got the privilege of agreeing with him or not however the facts strike me and both of us the editor and I have the right to act on our opinions on Election Day to vote for the principles we believe in and finally I'm thankful for being able to believe in spite of everything that somehow someway the unity we've got here in the Johnson family will someday spread to men and Nations throughout the world all these [Music] amen [Music] [Music] hello everybody sorry about the clowns but uh I mean I figured like animated clowns would not be as bad as human clowns cuz I certainly have some horrifying human clown films and I know that some of you are still psychically damaged from the mime show that I did more than a week ago uh so I was trying to be sensitive to that but uh I basically did this showed you a film day of Thanksgiving which honestly even though it's corny is a real good film real good film and uh you know if I was those kids the turkey I don't care but man the fact that Mom is still making pumpkin pie is very important uh cuz I love me some pie but anyways I I showed both of those films to kind of announce that uh where's my hand right there so there uh the clown Thanksgiving painting is gone and if in case you forgot what that was um here it is um yeah that uh was something that we found at a thrift store years ago decades ago maybe 20 years ago maybe longer um and it happened that the found footage Festival guys uh Joe picket in particular was obsessed with it when he first saw it I gave him a tour of the archive and he was like oh my God and he took a picture of it had it on his cell phone year for years and even moved it to new cell phones and had it as the wallpaper on his cell phone um so when we came up with the concept of doing a toet tapping ton uh competition where we picked films that had uh songs or Jingles on it to compete with uh jingles and songs from videos the found footage Festival guys picked um we said what are the stakes and Joe immediately said I want that clown painting and I said okay and so uh we beat them the first Go Round And that's because you guys made great and so what we got was the club um painting as as a prize then the second year they wanted to do it and they still wanted the clown painting and the club painting and I said okay well we'll do that but if you lose uh you have to dress as clowns clown pilgrims and you have to feetus Thanksgiving dinner and they were like sure and of course they lost and I should say the reason why they lost is because we've got so many more films that we watch than they watch a videos because we're watching films more than 250 times a year and they're only watching maybe 50 times 60 times a year uh their videos and also you guys help me vet and find the best films uh with the best songs so of course we beat them again and they were immediately like Heming and Hine uh there was a proposal to try to do another competition and then kind of double or nothing and I was like no I said no you guys have to come here and do clown Thanksgiving and they came through doing uh the chop and steel tour they were like oh we don't have time to do it I was like but they came back through uh over the week weekend and uh I made them stay at my house and we scheduled clown Thanksgiving and here are some images uh from clown Thanksgiving uh here are them dressed as clowns uh in the middle is my assistant Kon Finch who actually came up with the bet uh and he showed up as dressed as a clown which I thought was really pretty awesome then here it is uh them uh eating Thanksgiving dinner dress as clowns and they did serve the avgeek staff um and here it is them trying to recreate the photo um with uh Joe with a giant turkey leg and Nick dressed as the the the clown in the back holding some pie um and they did some such a great job that I actually gifted them the clown Thanksgiving painting uh because they really brought it they really in fact they put on way too much makeup Joe uh shaved his beard off uh and you might say like was it worth it like was it worth all that and here's a photo that tells me that it was worth it here's Joe picket the sad clown um photo which was phenomenal it was so great uh so anyways yeah that's what happened so we have this missing thing but we have uh probably in the in the winter we're going to do a toet tapping tourament competition again and we are going to get that clown painting back because uh we already back in April or may we you guys help us pick stuff and so there we go anyways uh all that and I don't know if I have any films ready uh uh anyway yeah so I got this I think we can show so this is a uh a NASA film but it's actually made by MIT on behalf of NASA and it's kind of investigating what it's going to take to land on the moon uh this early 60s and it's kind of talking about about the Technologies and it's kind of great so it's called Uh small steps giant strides enjoy at Cape Kennedy The Familiar shape on the Launchpad a symbol of the Space Age The Familiar Countdown the signal for a beginning but the real beginnings of this Mission any mission go back in time a time when only the dreamers The Visionaries could guess at what lay ahead by off IAL Reckoning the beginning was in 1958 the first small steps legislation a new agency a table of organization and a determination to make it all work in a way never dreamed of [Music] before the program did work it is working in less than two decades an orbiting laboratory circled the Earth its crew conducting scientific research and Performing experiments testing the limits of human endurance for long periods in space duplicating scenes science fiction writers described years [Music] earlier in less than two decades the space program has reached a level of precision of aess routine performance but such routines rarely generate the excitement the glamour of previous years previous years when a small single satellite could command giant double headlines holding out the promise of dazzling [Music] achievements the early dreamers and Visionaries started the momentum two brothers from Dayton soaring above a lonely beach in powered flight a professor from Massachusetts firing off a rocket they started the excitement and it was a long time [Music] subsiding [Music] he [Music] n [Music] behind the headlines the accomplishments there was something else consider the thoughts of a modern-day Visionary Isaac azimov scientist writer eclectic Watcher of space progress in any consideration of the Space Program it's best not to look upon it as a succession of spectaculars I think or to think of it as a kind of baseball game in which that side wins who hits the most home runs we're doing something in space that's more important than the personalities involved or the individual Feats it's also to be remembered that the astronauts themselves represent the visible peak of a large pyramid most of which as far as the general public was concerned was quite invisible there are many things that had to happen had to be in existence in order for those astronauts to move out into space to safely reach the moon and safely come back and there are faithful human beings tending those instruments making those plans designing the vessels taking care of a 100,000 small details that all the the rest of us completely Miss if we concentrate on the astronauts themselves it would seem that here we have a group of the very finest kind of Americans in a rather old-fashioned tradition uh great family men cleancut adventurers almost as though it were mcguffy's readers come to life uh and yet behind the lines there are people I am sure from every kind of background from the big cities indeed from the big city slums perhaps uh to Farms from mountainous regions from the plains it is it is the product of a cross-section of America with a large representation naturally of what we might call the educated groups the engineers and the scientists and in addition I rather suppose a great many foreign born people too in the last analysis and so they came the people and the machines Marshal and scheduled by a unique Partnership of government industry and education it was done because there was focus a goal land a man on the Moon by 1970 the goal was reached with 6 months to spare now the accomplishments of Apollo blend into a composite picture of success and still our attention is riveted to the symbol the launch in December 1972 when Apollo 17 took off the last of the launches that were then planned I watched the launching at night it was just past midnight as a matter of fact and I have never seen anything that was so all inspiring really it was at night and suddenly the Flames shot up and the whole earth lit up in a kind of pseudo semi daylight the sky became a kind of tan it was an orange light not real daylight but the whole world lit up in this weird light and I had to wait a few moments before it took off and naturally that was a frightening thing because simply because I was watching it would anything go wrong but it didn't it took off and began to climb higher and higher and higher and the light continued all over we could see in every direction until finally it diminished and diminished and diminished and the night gradually came back and the Stars gradually returned to the sky and the Sea gradually grew black nothing sudden little by little until finally Apollo 17 was just a bright star in the sky moving moving growing dimmer growing dimmer dimmer dimmer until one couldn't be sure which star it was and all the rest was [Music] black [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] a [Music] and you know it's a funny thing no science fiction writer as far as I knew ever dreamed that the first step on the moon would be visible on television back on Earth we always had the notion that they would reach the moon and that man would know about it only when they came back and told them about it so you know there are limits to the our ability to predict and in general where we're not being completely fantastic we are hopelessly conservative with all the success and acclamation there still our doubts and questions you frequently hear people ask but what do we get get out of it all what's the good of going to the moon so what if they get some rocks back from the Moon and again this is a case of trying to judge the Hole by the little tip of the iceberg there are a great many things going on behind that which is most clearly visible there are all kinds of te technological advances in computer technology in in in Communications uh in engine nearing of all kinds all of which can then be applied in other directions as well there is nothing that will bear the label made through space technology in some of the in some of the less tangible advances the fact that we can learn how to predict weather better is largely due to our weather satellites but people forget that they can watch Olympics in Japan without constantly thinking this is made possible to me for a by a communication satellite in fact what is in a sense most wonderful at the same time most frustrating is that no one can tell what the most important aspect of an increase of knowledge may be for decades perhaps centuries and how many the people trapped in an approaching storm don't have to wait for decades and centuries they receive the benefits of space techn ology immediately weather satellites provide an example of down toe applications of space technology providing data on Storms temperatures winds the final result the forecast shows up on the Evening News because the data is widely available to people around the world people who use it to prepare long range forecasts of Greater detail greater accuracy other satellites provide other answers answers only dimly perceived by scientists a few years ago men who knew only that they had to know the great enemy of the human race is ignorance it's what we don't know that limits our progress and everything that we learn everything that we come to know no matter how esoteric it seems no matter how I every Tower is will fit into the general picture a block in its proper place that in the end will make it possible for mankind to increase and grow become more Cosmic if you wish become more than a species on Earth but become a species in the universe with capacities and abilities we can't imagine now nor do I mean greater and greater consumption of of energy or more and more massive cities it's so difficult to predict because the most important advances are exactly in the directions that we now can't conceive but everything we now do every advaning knowledge we now make contributes to that and just because I can't see it and I'm an expert at this and just because I can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there and if we refuse to take those steps because we don't see what the future holds all we're making certain of is that the future won't exist and that we will stagnate forever and this is a dreadful thought and I am very tired when people ask me what's the good of it because the proper answer is you may never know but your grandchildren will crystals from the Moon provide Focus for the Dilemma they yield immediate instant information yet they hold out the tantalizing suggestion of Greater knowledge for the future in man's pursuit of knowledge he asks how not why and as the velocity of invention increases his questions tumble upon one another the same year the right Brothers flew their plane Albert Einstein asked why the pursuit the questions lead us to our nearest star the sun the basic source of all life all energy on Earth without it there would be no light no warmth no food no life the poet watches the sunrise and writes a sonnet but the scientist looks at those huge outpourings of energy and begins to ask questions and sends spacecraft far into space to do the asking for him in the process he receives data which can help provide a better understanding of the Sun and its relationship to the life processes on Earth by looking up there we begin to understand our life down here if we look for a broader approach to what we have been calling the Space Program then what we must do is to call it a planetary program in other words one of the important functions of exploring space is to understand our own planet and ourselves better I mean that's the name of the game we've got to understand ourselves in the place we live on and aside from just pure knowledge for its own sake uh we want to increase increase the benefits for ourselves not just material benefits and also for our posterity well then if we talk about a planetary program that is tackling the entire complex of complex of problems which involves Earth as a whole and not just one small section of it the greater problem is how to conduct and improve Human Society how to improve and increase the balance uh the ecosystem balance of which human society is a part in other words we want to take a large look on Earth and deal precisely with those problems that concern everyone and are not specialized and of which all other problems are special subdivisions so to speak well if we do that it will turn out that some of them can't be tackled properly except from the Viewpoint of space or with knowledge that can only be G gain through space exploration but then space exploration the search extends to the oceans how does Man live in an isolated hostile environment for long periods of time the answer from space technology will help man to live Beneath the Sea to study its vast reserves of food of energy energy the oceans and the Sun May provide new sources of vital energy work is underway in both areas of research and in others work which may lead to new techniques new methods for powering the machines and equipment and urban Society demands and needs to keep it functioning and for the demands of future Generations the machines and the demands made upon them present other problems pollution congestion energy consumption as the problems develop new ways are being found to deal with them research in Communications and Aeronautics is leading to more effective navigation Air Traffic Control noise abatement and pollution reduction the space agency's predecessor was concerned only with Aeronautics and that work continues today assuming more importance than ever and not only on the big commercial Jets but also on general aviation the system embracing the small private plane growing in numbers demanding Solutions research extends to the edges where Earth and space meet but now the distinctions are blurred we begin to see it as an entity space shuttle contributes to the blurring Rising like a rocket flying like a spacecraft Landing like an airplane and Skylab viewing Earth and space as one unified complex system for study the most dramatic way of of examining Earth as a whole is from space because that is direct one needs those pictures from space that dramatizes what otherwise we could only deduce and makes apparent to all even those who don't think about it that after all there is that cloud shrouded body and that's all we've got so far and we must save it the search extends Beyond ourselves to other planets in our solar system to Mars the Mariner spacecraft traveling for 6 months in the void of space using the Sun for energy the star kopus for guidance the information it sent back gave us new insights into this planet which has fascinated man for centuries it also gave us our first close look pictures of startling Clarity pictures derived from the same technology with which we now look at ourselves and as valuable as they are they don't provide all the answers soon another spacecraft Viking will land on Mars and begin a new search perhaps ending the speculation of years and perhaps beginning new speculation Mars is a living world we now know thanks to our probes it's geologically active it has volcanoes it has Ravines it may conceivably have life I don't mean Martian princesses on eight-legged horses but I mean is very simple forms of life in the soil uh the equivalent of our bacteria or viruses even even this would be of infinite importance to a biologists even the simplest form of life would represent for the first time a kind of Life different from that on Earth all the life on Earth however various it seems whether it's a human being or a cfish or a giant sequoia or a virus we all variations on a theme one theme if there is any life on Mars however simple it will be a second theme and observing what taking place on Mars be able to deduce much more accurately what took place on Earth with a perhaps a greater understanding of the details of life on Earth and another Pioneer reaching out to other planets once thought to be inaccessible now Within Reach it flies to Jupiter takes pictures then Soares off through and Beyond the solar system beyond our comprehension of space and time [Applause] [Music] [Applause] upon Pioneer 10 is is a plaque which carries uh drawings of man and woman of the spaceship itself and various other symbols which an extremely intelligent finder can interpret uh to give him some knowledge of what we are like where we are what we have done and so on it seems to me that when it is found the chances are great will no longer exist and it would be nice sort of soothing I think to think that somewhere in space someday people will know people beings will know that we have existed and that in our short lifetime we've managed to accomplish some things we've managed to send an object beyond our solar system so that from that they can judge what we were I rather think that it's a proud thing to do [Music] the homecoming parade along with the countdown and the launch visible symbols of a program an inquiry a quest after knowledge and understanding we give ourselves a HomeTown party and the symbols are embedded in our Consciousness but the results of the journey can only be hinted at and they'll only be known by those who hear Only The Echoes of the celebration [Music] la [Music] [Applause] [Music] la [Music] the 15th anniversary of NASA and let me just say coincidentally this is why I like doing what I do and what I show what I do coincidentally look what shirt I'm wearing it is the uh the the actual uh thing that we sent into space uh that was being talked about in the film um with the neaked people and a map to uh where we live uh for the aliens to all times Susie why don't you show them how to do it you should brush or rinse every time you eat you brush your teeth the way they grow down from the top up from the bottom you brush the chewing surfaces and the backs of your teeth do you understand that uhhuh well Mr clown that ought to make you feel better you take care of those teeth and you won't have any more trouble see you on your next actually related so good good uh thinking about that um yeah sorry I showed you a clown film that's really terrorizing but yeah that's what it is um and I did warn you don't watch it uh thanks for clean up some of their materials that are covered in uh mud and mold and um so we're going to do a workshop and train them and train some NYU students and so I've pre-recorded some shows uh which will
