lucky [Music] you nowhere will you see anything to compare with this The Greatest Show on Earth hey hurry hurry hurry step right up and see the most unusual injury defying death defying creatures in the universe hey hurry hurry hurry that the amazing sensation the scientific wonder the one and only shoab us come and see come and see the bnab US defying wonder of the world St right up ladies and gentlemen see the hurling hurling hit of us the unheard hindrance to Highway happiness he hurry hurry hurry and learn the secret of the tantalizing tent of [Music] mystery step right up ladies and gentlemen the show is about to begin well you'll certainly have to admit this is a strange assortment of uh well they are creatures look at that crazy cutab us not even scratched sure but look closer steel for skin no wonder it doesn't have to worry about getting cut by open Jack knives or Jagged metal but take a human being's skin soft flexible than tissue paper that's why a human being has has to play it safe always cuts away from himself if the knife slips no damage is done he keeps his fingers well away from the edge of a knife behind the blade behind the business end or edge of any sharp tool and he knows there's no better place for a Sharp tool when it's not being used than in a rack up and out of the way and what's good for tools in a workshop is also good for knives in kitchens in fact for anything sharp or pointed use properly store properly that's the way to protect tissue paper skin lucky cut ofus no cuts no punctures no need to remember safety rules about the use of knives [Music] [Applause] uhoh well what do you know no better than that old Cracked Egg Humpty Dumpty now when it comes to Falling there's no luckier creature than this old windbag the fibus he's light and he's bouncy and he's supposed to have a built-in gravity resistor gravity resistors we know nothing about gravity we do take a boy up in a tree oh about 20 ft about as high as an upstairs window of a home falling from this height he'd land at a speed of 25 miles an hour why gravity that'd be just like going as fast as he could on his bike and then crashing into a solid brick wall and funny thing sometimes a one foot fall can be just as bad as a 20ft fall ah so what and so why care says our flouncy ing friend it can well feel this way about falling it can bounce so it never gives a single thought to the dangers of standing on a wobbly rocking chair or climbing up on rickety boxes or using a step ladder with a broken step or stepping on a dead Branch yes lucky fall of us it can float in air but we can't we have weight another thing we have bones about 200 all shapes and sizes treat them rough and they crack or break no wonder a human being is careful about climbing whether a few feet off the floor or quite a few feet off the ground what he stands on has to be sturdy and no chance of it slipping for instance a ladder is safe for climbing only when the feet are firmly anchored or when someone holds the ladder sure it's simple what safety rule isn't then there's this tricky thing called balance just a matter of keeping weight evenly distributed now as long as this boy stands straight he's safe now he's slightly off balance and he'd better be careful leans way out and he's in trouble he's topheavy he loses his balance one Crash Landing so instead of reaching way out a human being moves the ladder to a new spot and leaves flying through the air to the birds but this business of keeping one's balance is just as important on the ground as it is off the ground that's why this sort of thing spells danger in capital letters same here yes big things things as well as small things same with school books a toy truck a baseball bat one of dad's garden tools whatever it is if it's lying around where people walk it's dangerous of course all this is a bunch of nonsense to the fibus who has never tripped over anything in its life couldn't if it tried lucky well not entirely but now take the shoot of us things that shoot don't seem to bother it at all but why should they this creature with cross ventilation is already 72% nothing a few more holes he should worry now as we all know shooting things pack a lot of power [Applause] [Music] this kind of power can be Mighty rough when it lands on human beings who are made up of complicated and delicate organs tubes and tissues that's why human beings make such a do over handling and using Firearms the safe way that's why before using a gun this fellow learns from someone who really knows the right way to handle it same with loading aiming all the safety rules every good Sportsman should know he shoots only at Targets except when hunting and only when and where no other people are around that gun is always loaded as far as he is concerned and that one rule alone can save a lot of embarrassment and possible injuries fool with someone else's guns without permission m not even just to show a friend yes to be safe a human being has to remember a lot of rules while our air condition friend doesn't have to remember a single one but while guns can't hurt it look what heat does nothing left fo the holes let's move on to the babus heat leaves it absolutely cold well cool anyway it's made of asbestos fuzzy but it just won't burn but there's nothing unburnable about human beings we can get burned and badly from anything as hot as 140° in fact this is just a little hotter than water out of most hot water faucets 140° yet Steam runs around 212° cooking grease gets up to 400° a lighted match up to 2100 de burning clothing as high as 2,000 de and only 140° heat can burn skin seriously so pots and pans are always turned so handles won't get bumped that way the Hot Stuff stays in the pans you take hot pads great little inventions the right thing to use for handling hot dishes and pans so the rule for any tool or Implement using heat is simply treat with respect and Handle With Care that goes double when dealing with open fires the only safe fire is one that is completely under control and one that stays where you want it to stay the only good matches to carry are safety matches or matches kept in a closed metal container small campfires are better than big ones better to cook over take less wood and a lot easier to put out now as every Scout knows if you break a match in two before throwing it away you can be sure it's out and just as with matches the only kind of campfire to go off and leave is one that is out completely out yes the babus is fuzzy but lucky can't get scalded can't get burned but my oh my does it go to Pieces fast when it gets in front of a moving car or truck now this cocky clangy creature continually makes connections with conveyances and no cause for concern lucky hbus with its spring protector this human beings don't have so keeping a sharp lookout for cars is the number one safety rule for pedestrians look at it this way it takes a pretty good track man to run 100 yards in anything close to 10 seconds yet most human beings can cover a short distance like this in a second or two same with this distance now 2 seconds doesn't give much time to look out for approaching cars and not much time either for a driver to Screech his car to a stop so rather than try to beat a signal light as it's Chang changing smart human beings wait for the green and then cross the street and even when the light is green it's safer to walk rather than run particularly on Corners where there are no traffic lights you can keep a better lookout for any car that may zip around the corner and walking is a good idea on crowded sidewalks too same with going through special playgrounds for small children the safe rule is walk don't run and no matter how many runs score the smart ball player stops and looks both ways before shagging a ball with none of these rules to remember the hbus can be carefree and careless in a way it's pretty lucky and in a way it isn't no for luck to really count it's got to be all the way it's got got to be 100% and not a single one of these creatures can claim that certainly not the cut ofus fall of us either shabus M babus hardly hius no sure they all had a little luck but a little luck doesn't go very far actually there is only one kind of creature who can be completely safe and that creature is you yes lucky you you are cutable breakable puncturable burnable htable drown yet you can be 100% lucky because you can think and stopping to think can prevent accidents for instance say you're about to take a dive off a strange Dock and you're not sure about how deep the water is or what's on on the bottom when you stop to think you don't take that dive the same with Deep Water Swimming if you're a rookie or even a fair swimmer when you stop to think you stay in safe water with your buddy say you get the notion to fool around in a canoe or a boat maybe feel like switching places when you stop and think you change your mind and stay put until you get back to the dock or Shore and this business of pulling up close behind a truck what if the truck stops suddenly or slows down fast to turn a corner when you ask yourself these questions you always keep a good distance back one out of every four pedestrian injuries is caused by people crossing streets between intersections whenever you stop to think of this you change your mind and go down to the next corner to across funny the better you're dressed the more tempting it can be to climb around on buildings under construction but whether in Sunday or old clothes the speed with which you hit the ground is the same when you stop and think you always change your mind about climbing and move on and this silly business of taking a dare when you stop and think of who stands to get hurt you always figure it's not worth the risk anyway what sports star ever takes a dare all of a sudden it may seem like a good idea to to throw something say a rock where will it land how can you be sure even big league pitchers throw wild once in a while when you think about it a second you drop the Rock and go on your way take aiming a gun at someone in fun when you stop and think of the accidents that have happened just this way you always kick that silly idea out of your mind fast it boils down to this whenever you stop to think you always prevent an accident and unlike the cabus the fibus the shabus the babus and the hbus who are only Lucky in a very small way and who never think you can be completely lucky and all because you can think [Music] may I point out beer lovers that refrigerators are difficult to carry and may contain ordinary beer while this 12pack is easy to carry and always contains less filling lucky light obviously then one should purchase this 12pack instead of a refrigerator uh so obviously uh it's Friday the 13th and so I'm showing you some things that we've seen before but um deal with luck and Superstition and not a particular uh slasher franchise I might have a you know in hindsight I might have a Friday the 13th trailer let me see if I can dig that up but in the meantime this film is clipped but still pretty great this is uh science and Superstition enjoy well that's a rabbit's foot the catcher but Allan seems to believe the rabbit's foot will bring him good luck while George the catcher thinks it's just a Superstition well we'll soon see strike three you're out it looks like the rabbit's foot didn't help much time anyway but even the end of the playground period didn't end the argument between George and Allan they took the rabbit's foot up again with Miss Carr their teacher George says I told him it was no good a rabbit's foot is just a silly old Superstition but Allan wouldn't give up it is not it's a fact says Allan this sort of thing could have gone on forever if Miss Carr hadn't decided to discuss this matter of superstition and facts with the whole class what is a Superstition anyway and what is a fact are all superstitions true or are just some of them true are any superstitions really true and what about facts this car decided to start with the rabbit's foot idea now George tells me he thinks this is a superstition now who thinks he can tell me a fact or something he believes is a fact yes Alan well last week when we talked about glass he said it was a nonconductor of electricity I think that's a fact isn't it oh we did talk about that and we can add that to our list now who else can give me another statement something he calls a Superstition yes Marian well there's a super superstition about the ground hug if he sees the shadow when he comes out in the spring there'll be 6 weeks more of cold weather yes that is a fairly common saying now we have two more statements to write Miss car had no trouble getting a lot of statements to add to her list and by the next morning she had arranged the statements in a chart on the Blackboard the class had mentioned eight items in all and from these they had chosen six statements for class discussion first there was the original Rabbits Foot a rabbit's foot brings good luck next was an example of a fact glass is a nonconductor of electricity then if the groundhog sees his shadow on the 2nd of February there will be six more weeks of cold weather this car asked George to hand out individual record sheets so everyone could study all the statements very thoughtfully somebody had suggested the statement a pint of milk weighs more than a pint of cream then there was the idea that hot water will freeze quicker than cold water and last on the list was water expands when it freezes Miss Carr asked everyone to think about each statement and to check off each one on the list this would give each pupil a record showing I believe that statement I do not believe this one I'm doubtful about this and so on very quickly everyone completed the lists of the six statements the class had Chosen and now miss Carr could add up what the whole class thought about each statement from the rabbit's foot idea clear on down the line to the m these are the opinions of the whole class now that we've recorded our opinions I think we should investigate to find out whether or not our opinions are based on good reasons first how about a rabbit's foot we carrying one bring good luck it seems to me there's one way to find out Alan yes Miss car will you hand out these rabbits Fe to 10 students who would volunteer to carry them for a week now this is the first step in our experiment yes this will be an actual scientific experiment to find out if carrying a rabbit's foot will bring good luck to the 10 volunteers like many experiments this one will extend over a period of time Miss Carr wrote The Experiment on the board then George listed the students who will not carry rabbits feet and Allan listed those who will carry them for a whole week at the end of the week each student will report what happened meanwhile Marian wrote on the board the names of her group their job will be to look up weather reports to find out if the groundhog seeing his shadow really governs the weather they'll report next week too but some of the statements do not take so much time to investigate we can test this statement right away glass is a nonconductor of electricity first Alan and Larry test their batteries in circuit it's all right the bulb lights up and if a metal rod is put in the circuit it lights again so we know that metal is a conductor of electricity but what about glass nothing happens no light now do you believe that glass is a nonconductor of electricity there's no doubt about it now because our experiment proved that statement to be a fact while Allan put away the electricity experiment things Miss Carr recorded the result now the students were basing these new opinions on evidence experiments and reasoning it wasn't just guess work anymore a week later Marian and her group were ready with their report report on the groundhog statement and while Marian was copying her records Miss Carr called for individual reports on the rabbit's foot experiment Allan was first I was one of the 10 who Carri a rabbit's foot I found a quarter last Saturday I call that good luck I didn't carry one and wednes day I went the school poster contest and on Thursday I got a pretty low Mark in history I guess that's good luck and bad luck I did carry a rabbit's foot the only unusual thing that happened was that we this could be called good luck or bad one by one all the pupils reported on what had happened to them during the week and they finally agreed that carrying a rabbit's foot doesn't really affect the daily events of their lives so their experiment proved the first statement to be just a Superstition Maran would you like to give the report for your group now well we studied the United States weather report for the last 10 years for our state then we organized our material and this is a good job of research for every Groundhog Day or February 2nd the weather was listed if it was fair the groundhog would have seen his shadow and if it was cloudy he couldn't have seen his shadow but Shadow or not the temperature never varied more than 2° from normal the groundhog had nothing to do with Spring weather when we seek to answer our questions by observation and research and experimentation as we have been doing we are using the scientific method the scientific method is our most valuable weapon in the search for truth modern man uses the scientific method in research to help him base his opinions on facts for everything he can observe he tries to discover the natural cause in the search for truth scientists have invented apparatus to observe things that mankind never saw before in learning the truth about a rabbit's foot as a good luck charm we use the scientific method and write on down the list the use of the scientific method gave us the truth now why not use what we have learned learned to discover the truth about the last three statements does a pint of milk weigh more than a pint of cream try it at home for yourself here's another will hot water freeze quicker than cold water try it yourself don't be satisfied with just anybody's guess does water really expand when it freezes try this experiment yourself it's simple do you believe this is the right answer well it was Allan with his rabbit's foot who started us off on the search for and out of it he learned the scientific method and so did we how many believe this is the best way to try to understand the world we live in once but that will be enough Friday the 13th RIT R I knew I had it um sorry that was like I was I found it I was like going through all these uh TV trailer chunks of of digitized video and then I went in I was like oh there it is and then I had to clip it and then the film was ending anyways uh there it is Friday 13th happy happy Friday the 13th for you all right so behind me um I have a film scanner because that's what we do is we scan films and this one so a lot of times when I get a film the title stands out I'm like oo I want to see what that is because that might be interesting and um I'm typing the title of this uh so sometimes you get burned like you're like oh this is going to be great uh there's a film that I have called don't tell the cripples about sex and it's like holy cow like that's crazy but it's really just a encounter group of people with disabilities talking about their sexuality and it's not very interesting um another time there was uh the door the jail door went clang and you're like o what's that and it's just kids kind of in a language arts class not just kind of talking as with a teacher who's writing things on a board not interesting and then the the opposite of course is the film The Story which is it's like what what is that like an English film about like the store what a story is and the development of a story and then you realize like oh no it's a uh a young Matt graining telling a story bedtime story to his sisters Maggie and Lisa as filmed by his father Homer and you're like holy cow that's crazy anyways this film um it's the title is fire in their learning and I could go either way like I don't know is it a fire safety film is it a about trying to get kids excited about teaching cuz we certainly have been bit by this collection this Iowa Northern Iowa University collection where it's like oh this could be interesting no it's not so I don't know what do you think do you think this is going to be fire in their learning is going to be a uh fire safety film in a school or is it going to be um getting kids excited on fire about what they're learning like let's see we're going to find out together this is a world premiere 21st century premiere of this film fire in their learning all right enjoy [Music] h [Music] the path between home and school a way of Adventure a world of war wonderful curious [Music] things things to catch and touch things to take to school and [Music] study children bring their interests and their questions to the classroom and to their teacher will she see in them opportunities for significant and meaningful teaching how can individual differences be respected how can self-expression be encouraged how can the roots of each young personality be nourished with warmth and understanding how can she be sure all of this will be done there are so many skills to be mastered so few hours in which to teach them this is the story of a fourth grade teacher and her pupils it begins one day on the playground the class is playing a game of hook on tag when one of the children spots a small fire in the field the teacher sends two children to notify the principal [Music] it isn't much of a fire until the fire engines arrive but now the children are full of Interest how will I ever get them back to the classroom and to the work planned for today that's what this teacher is thinking and then Miss Patterson has another thought why rush them back this is learning too or it can be perhaps the firemen can stay on and answer some of their questions [Music] the firemen quickly put out the fire it takes them longer to extinguish these blazes of [Music] curiosity hoses nozzles pumps and gas masks are all explored and explained [Music] back in the classroom Talk of the fire the firemen and the fire engines continues now the teacher has a decision to make shall she shut off all the talk of the fire and try to switch the interest to the work originally planned no we can continue this discussion Miss Patterson decides this interest in fire can open the door to many other basic learnings there certainly seems to be a lot of interest in this fire I heard some very good comments as we were coming up from the field just now Sally wants to know how fires get started can anyone help her find the answer to that question well some fires are caused by killes like people forgetting to uh blow out matches and then people not using Ash Strays and throwing their um ashes out of the windows of cars mostly I've seen my father do it even colen I've noticed that fires are different colors they're mostly blue and yellow and other colors um why are fir is always those colors well why does sun wind uh blow out some fires and yet make some fires bigger that's a good question Dy the teacher does not try to answer these questions instead she suggests that the children try to find their own answers together teacher and class decide to begin a study of fire first the children's questions are listed on the Blackboard then a plan of study is suggested although fire will be most important in the minds of the children for some time to come their continuing daily learning about science arithmetic and living and working with others will not be neglected this chart of problems and work plans looks messy to the children who made it the teacher helps them recall the use of the circle and the line in good lettering the study plan calls for gathering information from various sources books easy and difficult our out of the school library or brought from home for a classroom collection as the days go by a bullet board exhibit about fire and fire safety is begun with clippings from newspapers and magazines the teacher encourages individual reading and investigation as well as work by small groups the teacher too must find new ideas and study the subject she selects audio visual materials for the class and the children themselves prepare the room for showing a film in this film they learn about fire safety in the home [Music] in their study the children have been adding to their vocabulary now the teacher helps them as they check on their ability to spell these new fire words number one oxygen a fire must have oxygen in order to burn oxygen two dust dust Burns very readily dust reading spelling and now another basic skill that children write letters to their parents asking permission to visit the museum Miss Patterson encourages each child to do his best uned but she knows when help should be given museum is a tough new word cookie looks for friendly encouragement [Music] not all learning develops in the classroom nor is it achieved by words alone the campfire committee collects materials and puts on a demonstration for the rest of the class the committee decides to build build three kinds of fires one for cooking one for warming and another just to keep off wild animals when you're in the [Music] forest putting out a fire is just as important as building it properly ah Steve that water is for putting out the fire [Music] [Music] the teacher is alert to see that the attention of the group does not stray when she notes distraction and interest seems to lag she brings the demonstration to an [Music] end not forgetting of course to see that the grounds are left neat and tidy [Music] each pupil has his job to do as an individual or as one of a group David is collecting the letters which have been approved by parents giving their permission to visit the museum there's more planning for this field trip the children decide what to look for and how to make their trip a safe one [Music] from this rich source of information pupils and teacher learn how other pupils use fire they examine gleaming models which illuminate the days of the [Music] past the children look and sketch and they take their drawings back to the [Music] classroom there more work is done on them in preparation for a mural which will illustrate things the class has learned about fire [Music] but there are problems how to divide the space how to determine the proportions after searching for Solutions on their own they realize their need for skilled help so the art consultant comes to work with [Music] them 24 by8 is measurement is arithmetic another skill each child prepares small sheets in the same relative proportions as those of the large mural [Music] paper the children learn more about primary colors and experiment in mixing them to make new colors guide sketches are prepared fresh colors are [Music] mixed and with a guide sketches at hand for reference the whole class divided into groups goes to work on the mural each group works on the section which it is chosen as its respon responsibility fire engines old and new attract some of the [Music] boys the science of fire has also been part of the study now a group practices a demonstration of the fire triangle this is the um uh fire triangle without these three uh things heat air and fuel you will not have a fire as Ronnie Teddy and I I will show you this demonstration will be given later before other classes the children want it to be especially good so they criticize and make suggestions does anybody have any suggestions to make to Graham and his group that would make their demonstration a littleit better David I think Graham could improve his experiment if uh uh he didn't uh say so many US that is a good idea it is right to know what you're going to say before you get up to say it does anyone else have any suggestions Jimmy well David said a lot of us is s yes he did in their study the children have learned much about fire how it can help how it can harm how it can be controlled they've kept a record of all this in individual fire booklets these are taken home parents see what the children have learned and how skills in the three Rs have been extended Ronnie's father has seen his booklet he's glad to help Ronnie apply at home some of the things he has learned at [Music] school the neighbors too are informed and they are willing to cooperate in the community cleanup campaign sparked by the [Music] class [Music] at home in the community and at school the children apply their new knowledge here they are designing badges for a newly organized school fire patrol in the days to come there may not be another brush fire but this teacher will find some other opportunity for focusing the interest of her group on a different area of study for in her teaching she has discovered how to relate learning to living and how day by day to guide her class along a path of [Music] Adventure so uh I have a meeting I have to go to a zoom meeting uh but of course I have to show this uh thanks everybody for tuning in hit the thumbs up into the move books are not where it's at teaching you how to spell cat I know you'd rather play so why don't you throw all your books away books burning but fire is already yearning to put an end to any learning 1 3 59 throw in the fire put the books in the fire see the fles growing higher burning books is a heart's desire 2 4 6 time to [Music] incinerate books will not make you wise and readings bad for your eyes I am sure you agree so why don't you give all your books to [Music] mear but this one here is very good about a man named Robin Hood see the FL going high burning our hearts I never
