foreign thank you foreign hi everybody this is skip of Av Geeks and uh Welcome to our uh lunchtime streaming show and wow that intro was a lot more Awkward than it needed to be um anyways sugar love it um this is one of the Mogul Brothers films that uh Oregon archive has and that we scanned shows uh Early Sugar manufacturing process before high fructose corn syrup existed um so fascinating I love the the one kid at the kind of tea party whose hair is kind of like extended out it's a weird haircut and of course she had to have a bear you had to feed the bear sugar and honey because mmm sugar all right let's uh learn about some microscopic wonders in water this is by Pat Dowling films which was a little educational film company that made I think they also made um wonders in your backyard uh and they did some other kind of interesting Little Things enjoy [Music] other places no capped mountains present an entirely different scene equally beautiful [Music] melting Mountain snow forms Rivers which soon become the home of wild ducks and fish and other animals elsewhere Nature's forests have impressed men for Centuries with their magnificence you're the graceful wild elk finds a pleasant home nestled among the forest litter and the mountain soil are millions of unseen animals [Music] the water in this Pond for instance provides a home for thousands upon thousands of tiny creatures hundreds of them can be collected in a single jar of water they are so small that human eyes alone cannot detect them the jar of water shows no signs of life not a single living thing can be seen in this drop of water but the water is alive with invisible creatures when viewed with the aid of a powerful microscope tiny members of the microscopic Animal Kingdom become visible most of them are much smaller than the sharp point of a pin Nature has provided a forest for the stately elk to live in but these tiny creatures live in a single drop of water studying Nature's minute wonders through the microscope is a fascinating Hobby a jar of stagnant water can mean hours of fun to the microscope hobbyist another drop of sample pond water is placed on a glass microscope slide a thin cover glass is placed over it perhaps this new sample will reveal other members of the kingdom of invisible animals this is an amoeba surrounded by Vines of microscopic plant life its body consists of only one single cell the amoeba belongs to the protozoan branch of the animal kingdom the amoeba is next to nothing for it has no bones no mouth no fur or skin yet it is an animal the very lowest form of animal life and amoeba is often hard to find under the microscope its body is almost transparent it can be seen more clearly by slowly tilting the microscope mirror until the amoeba stands out against a dark background the amoeba Travels by extending a part of its body called a false foot then the rest of its body flows into the foot the amoeba has a unique way of eating it simply wraps its body around tiny bits of plant and animal life and absorbs them by slowly moving the slide around under the microscope new creatures come into view these microscopic animals are called vorticella they are also protozoans because their bodies are made up of only a single cell watercella have long tails by which they attach themselves to bits of plant life if a single vorticella could be enlarged 125 000 times it would be nearly as big as a man a higher power microscope objective will reveal another interesting thing about the vorticella many fine hairs surround the mouth end of its body these hairs are called cilia vorticella constantly wave their cilia and make currents of water the water rushes into the vorticella's body carrying bits of plant and animal life there are many hundreds of different one-celled animals in the protozoan branch of the animal kingdom another drop of water from the same Source might contain a different protozoan here is a strange looking pair they also have cilia surrounding their heads to identify them the microscope hobbyist looks in a book of freshwater biology men have spent years studying and classifying all these tiny animals this looks like the creature is now under the microscope another close look through the microscope and another look at the picture leaves no doubt that these are stentors stentors gather food by stirring up currents of water the same way as vorticella one drop of water might contain a hundred tiny creatures these are called eurocentrum they spend their entire lives spinning through the water at a dizzy speed eurocentrum are also single-celled animals therefore they are protozoans eurocentrum spins so swiftly that it's hard to observe the Cilia which surround their bodies there are several ways of slowing down Swift moving microscopic creatures one good method is the way this boy is doing he lightly fills a small brush with a chemical powder called methyl cell then he dusts the powder onto a sample slide it dissolves and forms a fixed solution within a few minutes the fixed solution slows down the tiny animals but does not harm them now the Cilia can be seen plainly if the hobbyist is lucky he can witness one of Nature's most unusual sights here a protozoa is dividing itself in two soon there'll be two separate creatures where there was only one before all protozoans reproduce in this simple manner called reproduction by fission now watch this tiny animal closely it's about to become two separate and independent creatures with a final jerk of its microscopic body this protozoa has succeeded in reproducing itself if allowed to reproduce freely protozoans would soon blanket the Earth but most protozoans have an unhappy fate they merely become tasty meals for larger forms of water life such as the Hydra the Hydra belongs to a higher branch of the animal kingdom than the protozoans its body is composed of more than a single cell when a Hydra is hungry he discharges a fluid if his tentacles touch another animal the fluid paralyzes the hydra's victim and provides a meal for this weird looking animal microscopic animals from other branches of the animal kingdom are present in the same jar of water this is a Rutherford it is a much more highly developed creature than any of the protozoans it has a brain and a digestive tract young rotifers are hatched from eggs the rotifer has two separate groups of cilia which resemble Wheels the Cilia provide a means of obtaining food here another kind of rotifer has worked his way into a colony of protozoans the smaller protozoans are swept toward him by the strong currents produced by acilia that was crazy just kind of ended um well like a lot of films the beginnings and the ends sometimes get sacrificed because someone doesn't know how to thread a projector they get shredded up and that's probably what happened is someone maybe a substitute teacher ran the film well after they ran it they rewound it running through the projector and that just shreds so that's potentially what could have happened there um now as a Counterpoint to uh microscopic wonders in the water we have Man versus microbe enjoy [Music] thank you and now let us go back 300 years London Samuel Peak in his famous diary we read of a catastrophe that was typical of that and of the preceding ages [Music] an epidemic of the plague that had been raging in Europe took a fearful toll of life in England's capital in 1565. hundreds fell here every day many have died in shorter people were sticking the streets [Music] everyone fled from the victims for fear of the dread disease but by far the most horrible element of the tragedy was the mystery of its origin no one knew what or who carried the plague the solution came by wave contraction and he wouldn't know what this is no it isn't a can opener it's the first microscope may look like a toy to us but its importance to human life is tremendous it's the connecting link between our science of modern medicine and distant past in 1683 not very long hope around the lands Superior to any magnifying grass of that day this Dutch naturalist set this lens into approved thread and thus constructed this first microscope he examined drinking water imagine the astonishment of his friends when he showed animals meaning about the teeth and found living beings too small to be seen with the naked eye this was Man's first glimpse into the world of germs with which he comes in contact in the following Century many scientists studied germs in 1762 friends is the Viennese doctor contended that many diseases were caused by living organisms invisible to the human eye but no one wanted to hear about the visions of a dreamer the medical men of the time demanded facts and plenties had no proof science was still waiting for the great Genius of the microscope it took a hundred years to find him that when he came he revolutionized the entire field of Medicine since 1860 all advances in work with germs have been based on the fundamental experiments of Louis Pasteur this great Frenchman established that germs did not come to life by themselves by an ingenious test he proved that germs would not develop in a germ-free flask unless they were carried there by some outside agencies such as dust particles he used the microscope to help the great wine industry of France he recognized the fact that yeast cells caused fermentation but that very often other organisms ruined the beverages Pastor commented and found he could kill the harmful organisms with heat this was the first of the methods discovered for killing germs it is possible to demonstrate this method by facing an active culture of bacteria under the microscope applying heat and then observing the germs forming in clusters as they died the use of heat to kill germs as in pasteurization is today vital in safeguarding many of our Foods particularly milk disease germs if present are eliminated by passing the milk overheated coils so that when it is finally served it shall contain nothing but the nourishing qualities that ensure good health in England Dr Lister who had been carefully studying the work of Pasteur conceived the idea that germs might be responsible for the pus infection of wounds in those days a surgical operation was a gamble with death from blood poisoning Mister found that he could avert this by killing the germs in and around the womb he sprayed everything with carbolic acid and bathed his hip at the same chemical solution he destroyed the germs with chemicals just as pastor had done with heat this was the second of the methods discovered for killing germs the modern antiseptic and aseptic methods of surgery are the outgrowth of blister's early experiments foreign sheep were dying in large numbers of the disease known as anthrax the great Pastor found that germs are responsible for this skirt he prepared a vaccine that enabled Farmers to protect their sheep and cattle from anthrax thus Pastor discovered the third method of combating germs that is by strengthening the Defense Forces of the body to the use of vaccines and antitoxins it was by means of this third method that he achieved the crowning Glory of His Brilliant career the successful fight against rabies or hydrophobia this humble chemist became the founder of modern scientific medicine and one of the greatest benefactors of the human race has stirs successfully expects the position of the microscope in scientific medical investigation in the next 50 years moral progress was made in medicine than in the previous two thousand years it is hard to believe that as late as 1832 New York was at the almost complete mercy of many infectious diseases such as cholera diphtheria and smallpox although vaccination then as now would have wiped out this last disease New York Post of June 16 1832 carried the story of an epidemic of Asiatic cholera that had broken out in Canada it was feared that the disease would reach New York shortly and that nothing could be done to stop it the epidemic did arrive and later spread its fearful hand over Europe as well not until 1883 did Robert Croft discover the germ that caused cholera in the preceding year Coke had found the germ responsible for tuberculosis later the typhoid germ was revealed by two German scientists Dr eberth and Dr gefke and in 1883 Dr Krebs discovered the germ that caused diphtheria but the real fight against the merciless diphtheria germ was yet to be won on Christmas Eve 1891 in the van Bergman Hospital in Berlin a little girl was fighting for her life against this murderous disease one Ray of Hope lay in the skill and Genius of Dr Van Buren a former military surgeon who had been making remarkable experiments under Dr Fox he had successfully cured diphtheria in Animals by means of an antitoxin with the courage and daring of his now ready to take the eventful step from the laboratory to the sick bed he brought his wonderful serum to the aid of the spicken child in a minute the painless injection had been completed contributions and bearing made to humanity that Christmas Eve will remain an everlasting symbol of his Good Will to men once again man had conquered germs by the third method of combat that of helping the body in its fight against the Agents of disease when bearing's achievement was great but he saw that it would be far more wonderful to prevent the disease than to cure it this ideal has now been achieved and today we have toxin antitoxin or toxoid with which we are able to protect our children against this period germs disclosed by the modern microscope are injurious to man some in fact are essential to his very life many live in the soil and make it possible for us to grow the fruits grains and other plant products so necessary for the existence of animals and Mankind but the injurious germs and indeed the causes of those diseases not due to germs must be discovered controlled and is possible destroyed the causes of many diseases have come to be known in the last 50 years but there are others that still elude the searching eye of modern science the cause and cure for infantile paralysis rheumatic fever and cancer are among the baffling Mysteries yet to be solved but there is every reason to believe that the scientists will be successful in the future year after year they struggle unrelentingly sometimes sacrificing their own lives to find new ways of controlling disease they are fighting the Battle of man against microbes so that we unhandled by the scourge of sickness May achieve fullness of life and happiness foreign just kind of ends just kind of ends um it's the nature of films that have been used is that they get cut up um all right so behind me I have a reel of commercials I know traditionally I've been trying to keep the commercials for Fridays but I have a lot of commercials I need to do uh these are from Craig Baldwin who's a collector uh and filmmaker in San Francisco and I need to get these back to him so um that's why we're gonna try to watch some commercials we'll go for a while and then it's invariably gonna crap out and so I might bounce to something else after that point so this is uh let me change this um these are commercials real five and these are almost all from the 70s there might be a couple from the late 60s but I think maybe a couple from the early 80s too but yeah almost all 70s enjoy for some reason let me see if I can get it to work foreign of course the best thing about
