foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer and welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that last film boy covered all the bases didn't it a lesson in health hygiene um this is probably made in the 20s or 30s so it was silent and it was from the Mogul Brothers collection and ultimately the organ archive had it and we scanned it for them so I I love looking at uh hygiene films from the past especially ones before World War II because uh so much information changed uh after World War II because they were the war effort actually had a lot of people thinking about Public Health in different ways and so um yeah there's definitely some some differences there but uh fascinating nonetheless all right so behind me I have a film scanner and we're gonna watch a wonderful I think the color is really good on this um Kodachrome so beautiful stunning color this is growing up pre-adolescence enjoy [Music] when summer ends and the cool weather begins is there excitement around your house planning for what you'll need seeing if last year's clothes fit right now Peggy is trying on a jacket she wore last year soon it will be Nikki's turn Nikki and Peggy are just about like any other brother and sister except that they are twins they were born on the same day in the same year Nikki is going to get some of his last year's clothes to try on how will this skirt fit Peggy well it looks to mother as if Peggy has really outgrown this skirt she's quite a bit taller than last year she seems to have shot up in height and she's gaining weight faster than before mother will need to plan on getting different clothes for Peggy since she has grown so much taller and now Nikki here's a pair of trousers Nikki wore last year as he outgrown them well he has grown a little taller but not as much this year as last year even though Nikki has grown some Peggy has grown more it's hard for Nikki to believe but Peggy who is the same age as he is is taller than Nikki for the first time Peggy and Nikki remember the pictures that were made in school last year to help the children with their postures the Twins were the same height then weren't they here's Peggy a year ago about four feet six inches tall and here's Nikki a year ago also about four feet six inches tall they were about the same height last year according to the pictures if you could look at the same kind of pictures showing Peggy and Nikki since they were six you'd see that they have both grown about the same amount each year this is the way most girls and boys grow up in the year 6 to 11. generally neither one grows much faster than the other but then some girls begin to shoot up they grow faster than before Peggy is one of those girls many boys of the same age are still growing slowly Nikki is one of those in school many of the boys in Nikki's class have been thinking about how tall they are you can see that some are a little taller than others and some are heavier but most of the boys are still growing slowly what about the girls in the same grade when Peggy and her class are in the gym we can see that the girls are growing differently there's Peggy she's almost three inches taller than she was last year some of the other girls have also changed quite a bit during the last year at this age the girls differ in size more than the boys do your growth is controlled by a set of glands known as endocrine glands you have many kinds of endocrine glands but one inside your head known as the pituitary gland controls your growing in height this gland makes a chemical and sends it out into your bloodstream which causes you to grow taller in your neck is another gland called the thyroid gland which affects your weight and also the way you feel chemicals from these and other endocrine glands help boys and girls grow up into men and women as they grow different parts of their bodies grow at uneven rates a boy's hands May grow full size before his arms grow full length his feet will be full grown before his legs his brain reaches full size fairly early his heart not until later girls will notice in addition to these changes extensive changes in their body shape they may gain weight rapidly in certain parts of their bodies and then as they stretch out we'll become more feminine in their proportions so growing up is an uneven process different between boys and girls different between parts of your body different at different ages each one grows in his own way is there something special you should be doing to be sure you're growing up normally keep healthy Nikki and Peggy know and you know good health rules eat the right Foods a balanced diet of all the different kinds of foods you need to feed your growing body remember milk has calcium important for rapid growth in your bones chew your Foods well so your body can make best use of their nourishment and you may find you need extra food for your growing large meals and the right kind of extra snacks between meals get plenty of exercise easy exercise if it's soon after meals and hard fast moving exercise some of the time get plenty of relaxation too for your growing body needs periods of rest get enough sleep especially when you're growing for Sleep repairs and refreshes your body if Nikki and Peggy could look ahead they'd see that Peggy's rapid growth in height and weight will be over in a few years perhaps by the time she's 14. what about Nikki in a few years it will be his turn to begin a rapid increase in height and weight look at the boys who were 12 and 13. you'll see more differences in their height than among boys who are 10 and 11. some boys of 12 and 13 have grown quite tall but because different parts of their bodies are growing more rapidly than others some of the boys seem awkward and gangly and some are not much bigger than they were last year they have not yet started to shoot up in the years to come Peggy will continue to grow but not much taller like most girls she will gain weight her hips will broaden and her body will become rounder and more feminine in shape she will probably reach her full height by the time she is 15 or 16. Nikki will keep on growing in height and in weight like most boys he will grow taller and heavier than girls his age his shoulders will broaden his muscles will grow stronger he will become more like a man his growth in height will continue probably even past 17. Peggy and Nikki have shown us average growth but all children are not average each person is an individual and will grow differently from others his age although all children do not grow up just the way Peggy and Nikki are growing after the age of 9 or 10 girls are likely to grow tall sooner than boys this is a change from the earlier years when growth was fairly steady and about the same for girls and boys but when the boys begin their rapid increase in growth most of them grow taller and heavier than girls remember your growth is controlled by endocrine glands one of them your pituitary gland affects your growth in height your thyroid gland affects your growth in weight and affects your feelings too chemicals from glands make girls more like women and boys more like men remember growing up is an uneven process different between boys and girls different between parts of your body and different at different ages each one grows in his own way whatever your particular growth pattern is you can be pretty sure it will be normal if you keep healthy with the right amount and the right kinds of foods with the right kind of exercise and relaxation with the right amount of sleep growing up is fun but everyone grows in his own way Peggy's girlfriend is taller and heavier than Peggy but both of the girls are taller and heavier than Nikki and his friend they know as we do that different boys and girls naturally follow different growth patterns during the years when they are growing up into men and women thank you man I love me a good um Kodachrome Coronet film about puberty that one's great what I like about it is they talk about a girl's body getting more feminine that they don't specifically point out what that means you know some stuff grows you know feminine stuff um let's watch this film this one's missing the title I feel like that this is a Coronet film as well but it's black and white it's Mary visits Poland enjoy so I bought posters in a peasant costume I got from my grandma and I went there then the class about my well I began when I was six years old I went and visited my grandmother on a Polish Farm that was in 1939 just before the war started in Europe my father wanted to visit his mother and relatives whom he had not seen for a very long time besides it would be a nice vacation for me too I remember my grandmother [Music] my uncle Thomas thank you and his horse and wagon and the old village in which they lived [Music] their home was made of wood the roof of thatch was strong behind it was a pond where the Ducks used to swim they walk they wobble from the safe place because they might get in the way of my uncle's shoemak he walked round and round all day long the fresh week for their daily bread [Music] Ed cheese he wore a hat to protect his head from the Sun it didn't stay on his head much though [Music] [Applause] [Music] everybody works hard to raise enough food to eat you see polish peasants do not buy food from the stores the way we do everything they eat comes from their own Farms the women dig potatoes while men do harder chores [Music] after a week of hard work come Sunday on Sundays even my smallest cousins dressed up to look their very best they took special care to curl their hair very much as we do though of course their styles are a little different then they go to church and walk separately from the grown-ups only the six stay at home nobody has an armor deal they walk a ride in horse drawn wagons some ride their bicycles the wagons are parked near the church the horses Munch hay while they wait [Music] this village women and girls wear the same costume my aunt told me these are called Lovich costumes because they're one only in low witch province they are very heavy and hot since they are made up of at least three Woolen skirts one Sunday there was a wedding at the church the bride and groom had a push through the crowd the bride wore the low witch costume with a veil over it afterward there was a dance in the open air the dance was called the kuyaviak when Chopin is a little boy he listened to this music and when he became a great composer he wrote many beautiful Tunes based on polish folk songs [Music] next day children went to school the little ones dance in a circle sing songs and clap their hands then they sit down at the table draw and learn to write the alphabet some of the girls wear shawls [Music] any chance to see them play the same games we do not all of them have shoes does not stop them from running fast and having fun families cannot always afford to buy shoes for growing children after a few weeks we left my grandmother's Village to visit Krakow children made old historic buildings and museums we do that here in America too the numbers on their hats stand for their school a car was the capital of Poland [Music] here stands the cathedral where the temperature of Krakow was shot by a Tata Arrow while he was blowing his trumpet car the Vistula river runs right through the center of the city [Music] the costumes are very colorful the boys wear pickup feathers in their hats and the girls have gay ribbons and Beads [Music] the most exciting part of our visit was the trip to the top throw mountains they are in the southernmost part of Poland on the border of Czechoslovakia we rode over the mountains in a cable car we could look far down into the valleys it was just like riding in an airplane [Music] it was in the world [Music] foreign [Music] means Mountaineer in Polish the good Isles Villages are in The Valleys between the mountains they have farms in the mountains there they grow potatoes wheat and other food but the good is a Shepherds small children tend to Sheep In The Meadows their clothes are made of sheep's wool the beautiful design on the trousers are embroidered by hand grown-up men wear the same costumes around the hat is a band of seashells that is because as the girl say they originally came from the Seacoast the belts are made by hand out of leather with heavy metal buckles foreign [Music] at home the women weave cloth they even make their own shawls and blankets they paint pictures on their dishes and cause beautiful designs in their spoons and furniture [Music] even the paintings of the Saints are made at home these things are so beautiful that a special school has opened so that young people from all the cities in Poland could learn the good a lot [Music] while the boys learn wood carving the girls make laces one of the favorite designs is a mountain flower [Music] then on Sundays the good I'll relax to the music of the bagpipe and Fiddle the Young Folks dance in one dance the boys fight for a girl the boy who lose his hat is out [Music] foreign [Music] buildings and the hard work in the fields our last stop in Poland was cademia gademia is a new city part on the Baltic Sea it is clean and modern and reminded me of America then came our ship flying the American flag and then goodbye to Poland as we left for home we did not expect at that time that war would come to Poland so soon sorry finishing my salad um do you think she was British I'm just wondering like that uh some of you are in the comments were trying to figure out what Mary's accent was and then I saw that uh thing at the end that in the end card which was not a cornet or a um looking it up here or an Encyclopedia Britannica ending I'm just kind of wondering it's it's fascinating um that's why we watch these films because sometimes we have questions that we need to answer so let me see if I can I'm looking up in my database it's not an AV geek show and let's skip this type in something um on the computer visits Poland OH International Film Forum and it says in the synopsis an American girl tells her classmates about her visits to her grandmother's Farm all right well there you go it's a great story nonetheless but not nearly as good as the great story of corn enjoy huh yes it's a great day to be alive and I hope it's even more beautiful wherever you are this is Everett Mitchell with a great story of core the crop that makes America great on a million Farms Across America as spring warmed the soil and other corn season begins filling the wagons in The Cribs again to all flowing for corn is the very foundation of the food supply of America and the world [Music] corn is beef and pork poultry eggs and dairy products from which hundreds of the products of American Industries [Music] Sunriver the mighty warrior of South America years ago ancestors of the American Indians probably first met the Primitive ancestor of corn this plant known as grass corn may be similar to the one cultivated plant from which corn was developed perhaps a grass-like plant such as this was discovered growing in the southwest section of the Amazon basin by the amaranth the earliest men of the Western World This Grass corn is grown as a research project at the Connecticut primitive crypto structure and over the years they've emerged The Great Food producing plants that was to become the Indian's most valuable gift to the white man so the wild unexplored area of the Amazon River Tapas filmed is probably the Cradle of corn and out of this region of Brazil and Bolivia only recently penetrated by white men corn spread north and south north to the Inca civilization of eight Cuba and Haiti in the West Indies North on up through the region that was to become each country and the Pineland corn has spread through the Western Hemisphere before the first voyage of Christopher Columbus in [Music] sit down corn corn from stable Dependable source of food this resulted in establishment of permanent Villages and homes for the Indians her families could settle down to support hospitalization from Village to Village and from tribe to tribe seed was passed by trade or gift and corn spread North to Central America where other great cultures were founded centuries ago Mayan and Aztec priest in Guatemala and other parts of Central America directed the construction of cities temples and observatories in civil additions built on corn in Yucatan are the ruins of a magnificent pyramid where once the Mayan priests prepared a calendar to guide the Indians in the growing of course today while the Magnificent Stone buildings of those ancient civilizations crumble under the green curtain of the Jungle corn Remains the best food crop of Central America foreign [Music] northward the great food crop slowly inched its way spreading its benefits to the Indians of prehistoric Mexico here today in a land that has produced thousands of props of corn in many cases the methods of planting and growing corn are not changed from the time when the first crop was grown this Mexican farmer uses the same kind of planting stick that is great great grandfather used in the warm climate of some region South of the Border you can find crops in all stages [Music] harvesting is also the same operation that it has been for centuries corn is picked by hand and the ears go into a basket on the Royals moisture and maturity conditions of every region where corn is grown today [Music] mountains did not stop the spread of corn [Music] oh on the western slope of the Rockies in Southwestern Colorado is the Mesa Verde Rising above the high Plateau here a thousand years ago was a flourishing Indian civilization built on corn in this rugged Wilderness of Mesa Land crisscrossed by Canyons two cowhands looking for lost cattle some 60 years ago were flabbergasted when they gazed down on the amazing ruins of The Cliff Palace a thousand years ago in this one building more than 400 people foreign where women were forbidden to enter here for green storage rooms where grinding Stones were used in a rolling crushing motion that reduced cornmeal or flour [Music] relics now on display at the park tour scientists that several successive Indian peoples lived here with one thing in common their dependence on corn for food [Music] these years of corn grown by ancient cliff dwellers have been found here and although 1700 or more years have passed since they were harvested it is apparent that the corn Brewery with 10 inches of rain per year in a two-acre fact of Mesa land above the cliffs Indian employees of the park have grown corn for several successive years to demonstrate all the ancient cliff dwellers planted and cared for their principal food crop foreign [Music] crop for several successive years the cliff dwellers disappeared to the east corn was carried across the sea to the West Indies on Cuba where this scene was filmed on Haiti and the smaller Islands Fields were planted to maze along with tobacco sweet potatoes and other common crops in the West Indies as in foreign growing methods often follow those of centuries ago perhaps Christopher Columbus himself saw Fields like this on Cuba in the historic year of 1492. here corn is dried by hanging it in trees yes we Have No Bananas that's corn in that tree after the great discoveries of Columbus came a century of exploration here at Jamestown Virginia as the great actor of life under Captain John smithster in order those who do not work shall not eat the gentleman Adventures of Jamestown Colony were forced to labor in this field and helped grow 40 acres of the Corn that saved them from starvation every American School child learns about the Mayflower pilgrims but these youngsters are getting the story of the Plymouth Colony right where the Mayflower landed on Cape Cod weary hungry and facing a cold we record the great event in American history 16 pilgrims led by Miles Standish William Bradford Stephen Hopkins and Edward Tilley found the precious Indian corn on this spot which they called Corn Hill November 1620. the story of the pilgrims this year under guidance of the Indian squirrel they grew their own core and at Harvest time they set aside the first Thanksgiving to thank the Creator for his bounty and sure it was God's good Providence that we found this corn for else we know not how we should have done a few years later corn was contributed by massachusetts-based efforts to found in support of our University the oldest university in our country and one of the best known in the world [Music] corn helped the cause of Freedom when it fed the Ragged exhausted continental army during the darkest coldest days of the Revolutionary War foreign [Music] You Free Nation emerged After the revolution President George Washington paid tribute to corn in the Cornerstone laying ceremony of the new Capitol building [Music] Thomas Jefferson third president foresaw a great nation of sincere honest people whose homes and hearts would be rooted in vast fertile corn fields to the West an area which was open to settlement by the Northwest Ordinance and the Louisiana Purchase then along the trails they buy the Pioneers who carried long rifles Into the Wilderness followed the ox carts and the covered wagons bearing the axes and plows of the farmer Folk whispered holes is foreign [Music] the right of the whites to take their land and blood flowed as burning cabins cast a red light on lonely corn patches In 1832 the Blackhawk War fought for corn lands ended with the Indians beaten and Scattered today on beautiful Rock River in Illinois stands a monument to the great Chief Blackhawk oh who defeated by the whites spoke these words [Music] I loved my towns my cornfields and the home of my people now it is yours keep it as we did it will produce you good crops [Music] so the way was cleared for corn farming and Hogs team 12 a new industry boom founded on the stock that greedily ate the corn which was springing up in more and more Fields farther and far Buffalo New York was the center of the new livestock industry then carried Along by the westward flood the center of meat packing moved to Cincinnati where it rested in the 1850s at the rate of us and Hogs a day next for the West Duncan shiku took over as the world's meat packing capital and the center of trade in corn this is how one of the Great Chicago meat packing companies founded by PD armor looked in 1867. Union stockyards in [Music] thousands of head of livestock here is corn on the hook representing the work and the crops of millions of farmers here is Food For America and the world processed by the Chicago immense meat packing Industries so corn helped build the industrial North and Through the Years trade and Manufacturing expanded on the strength of the yellow grain [Music] in the Old South corn and cotton were the big crops this cast iron fence erected many years ago in New Orleans is evidence that the cotton Planters held corn in high respect or the golden kernels that could be eaten helped to build the picturesque historic South from the Potomac and the Ohio rivers South and West to the missed Gulf magnificent Plantation Mansions such as Stockton Hall at Natchez Mississippi were built by mussels that took their energy from corn [Music] each Plantation supported itself corn was shelled by hand for labor was plentiful then the grain was delivered to the Grist Mill even today little neighborhood meals such as this one continue to grind out cornmeal from the mill each family gets its supply of meals freshly ground from homegrown corn and ready for the kitchen many Southern States now require that Mills enrich cornmeal with mineral and vitamins [Music] always corn has been the Mainstay of the foods that graced the tables of both mansion and cabins in the stall [Music] and of course the mules and horses which work the fields are fed on the great staple crop corn in the new Diversified agriculture of the South corn continues to hold top importance along with cotton tobacco supplementary crops of fruits and vegetables and the South looks forward to even better days with improved methods of Agriculture Power Machinery better livestock and the new hybrid corn varieties [Music] as the years of the 19th century March 5 corn country Farmers settled down to the work of growing great crops to feed an expanding Nation Industries and commerce grew and prospered with a firm backlog of corn and homesteads extended the agricultural Empire farther and farther west [Music] cattle and Hogs of course followed the yellow grain and Omaha Nebraska became another great corn and livestock capital [Music] for a new and better age of farm living in 1905 Edward Murray East went from Illinois where he had helped developed an incorn to Connecticut the land of the Sleeping Giant mountain for he continued his work encouraged by cornbreading and Crossing done elsewhere by George Harrison Shaw after he's joined the Harvard University faculty in 1909 his student Herbert Kendall Hayes took charge at the Connecticut agricultural experiment station Hayes developed a beautiful high-yielding single cross hybrid before he went to Minnesota in 1915 Donald F Jones another student of Dr East took charge at the Connecticut station single cross hybrids but never be widely used because of the difficulty of producing large amount of seed corn from inbred lines Jones solved this problem in 1917 when he suggested the double cross hybrid since then Through The Years scientists have come from all the world to the land of the sleeping giant to learn of the miracle of hybrid corn from a man who developed the first successful hybrid [Music] here Dr Jones is describing to a visitor the hybrid combination which set the pattern that put hybrid corn in your fields the first seed for the new kind of corn was produced for farmers in 1920 by George Carter in Connecticut only a short distance from the mountain known as the sleeping giant now a big job remained for plant breeders before the new hybrid corn could spread to every Farm where corn is grown in America research at Connecticut had provided corn breeding methods but the hybrid produced there was adapted only to the northeastern states now many different kinds of hybrids were needed to meet many different kinds of growing conditions from north to south and east to west Perhaps it is a tribute to our web life that I have brilliant scientists most of them young men were willing to go against the current and to tackle with tremendous Faith the huge job of developing hybrids for All America to stake their future on a radically new approach to Corn Improvement America and the world or the hybrid corn makers the prophets of plenty of great debt new hybrids had to be created to meet each local set of corn growing problems then prove by making Superior performance records in test plots under practical corn growing conditions Eagles of course counted heavily and each new hybrid then is now was checked for ability to make an outstanding record scenes like this have been repeated tens of thousands of times as new experimental hybrids were checked against existing varieties infield Laboratories of every important corn growing area in the United States and Canada as leadership developed hybrid corn research departments appeared State experiment stations the United States Department of Agriculture and private organizations set up staff to produce hybrid corn for the farmers of the United States and Canada here you'll see one of these hybrid cornbreading staffs in action illustrating this new and effective method of hybrid corn Improvement such a research organization maintains Central breeding stations in each important corn growing area closely linked to each one of these Central corn breeding stations are hundreds of field testing plots in this scene Dr Jim holdrick one of the outstanding cornbreading scientists of our time is shown with several of his associates they are weighing the future of a promising experimental hybrid this is an actual field conference decisions made in conferences like this could add several millions of dollars to Farmer income by making available a new and Superior strain all of the hybrid corn research work done by this organization and others during the last resulted in Northwest corn for the East and Middle East bitter corn for the West bitter corn for the middle South better corn for the Southwest bitter corn for the south in fact bitter corn wherever corn is an important crop [Music] we're Northern Iowa big matures on strong stocked still green for Ontario big yields of fast drying corn under tough growing conditions for Pennsylvania insect resistant hybrids or a wide range of soil fertility for the West hybrids that stand severe drought and mature before early freezes or the Southwest hybrids need outstanding resistance to Drought plus resistant to weevos and other insects and research provides the answer to the many problems of foreign Growers across country with adapted hybrids perhaps one of the best examples of what research does is shown here this hybrid pictured in natural stage without having been touched is a northern variety where fast drying before cold weather is necessary the husks open up on maturity to let the kernels lose moisture fast for the South fast drying is not necessary but tight husks are needed to protect the kernels from damaged by weevils and birds Nationwide research provided this hybrid [Music] the hybrid corn research worked during the first 30 years of the present centuries has been a revolution in American agriculture 15 40 more yield plus resistance to disease insect found that they could grow more corn on fewer acres and drowned that it formerly produced corn was put into soil building crops as a conservation measure pickle Huskers found you hybrid born into General use and that meant completely mechanized farming horses kept for the corn husking jobs were necessary and with Machinery one could handle many more Acres so a New Prospect with higher standards of wing and more time for fun travel and enjoyment foreign agriculture came World War II when the Axis powers cut our supplies the fats oils Robert and many other vital materials they hope to strangle America but their Warlords hadn't figured on American farmers and hybrid corn during the War years pop after crop of three billion bushels of corn was harvested and on the extra Acres made of Effie oil and fiber crop birds of the pilgrim father from this form or else we know not what happened what happened so moral that story is I need to find an organist because I was really I mean regardless of how long and dry and tedious that film got that organist just guided me through um and I was having a great time um so yeah I needed to find an organist to uh to zoom in every show and play the organ um but uh yeah it's uh films like that are wonderful especially ones that are specifically about a specific uh crop or specific industry and then they talk about the war effort and it's like well during the war this is what we did this is how we rallied because of how great corn is um and so it's it's wonderful to see those films and it does date the film definitely I would say that this was probably still going on during World War One probably like 42 43 um and this is a film that would be that's not necessarily shown in schools I got it from a school but it could have been something that was distributed to local uh Farm groups to local agricultural like played at state fairs um kind of saying like hey look how great corns are corn is and look how great our farmers are yay team um but uh fun nonetheless all right uh thanks for tuning in today um
