show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was in Spanish and the name of the of the film was we are Spanish um so pretty great I like the soundtrack too it's kind of hit um I thought this next film was going to be a fable like an esoms Fable but turns out it's just a Science Biology film uh the cricket and the grasshopper uh there's no morals to be learned here I don't think we'll see enjoy [Music] every year in the spring seeds and eggs which have Lain dormant through the winter are [Music] developing the plants provide food for a wide variety of animals that live among the leaves and stems [Music] the grasshopper is one of the most common insects here and so are its close relatives The Crickets the structures of crickets and grasshoppers are much alike and since they are so common they are ideal insects to study both crickets and grasshoppers are harmless and can be captured with the bare hands in places such as fields or vacant Lots crickets can be found in large numbers they gather in piles of leaves or dry grass so they are easy to collect here crickets or grasshoppers can be kept in almost any kind of cage but if too many are put together they may begin to feed on one another to prevent this only a few should be put in each cage along with green plants fruit and vegetables grasshoppers will thrive in this environment on pieces of eggplant cucumber apple and squash if the animals are kept in a jar the food can be set up on sticks to help prevent it from rotting insects also need some moisture water can be sprayed into the Container if we watch them closely while they're eating we see how the cricket's Jaws work they move from side to side grasshoppers eat in much the same way and so do their other close relatives as we observe and care for these insects we learn many things about them watch how this grasshopper cleans its antenna by running them through its mouth watch how the finger-like mouth Parts work the grasshopper cleans its four legs in the same way going over them again and again and like the Grasshoppers The Crickets go through the same procedure they clean their legs feet and antenna notice the back of the cricket's for legs this is an ear a small shiny membrane which transmits sound waves from the air to the cricket's brain here is a demonstration of locomotion a grasshopper on a glass plate continues walk its feet are equipped with suction cups that allow it to cling but the cricket's foot has claws the cricket cannot maneuver well on the glass its feet will not hold another characteristic of the Crickets is the sound they make they produce this sound by rubbing their wings together if we examine These Wings carefully we will find a ridge on One Wing with the microscope we can see this hard file likee Ridge when the ridge is rubbed against a hard spot on the other Wing the vibrations create the sound we recog recognize as the call of the cricket certain grasshoppers make a similar sound and they make it in almost the same way this is a typical sound of the summertime we can see how the wings move together if we examine the wings closely we will find the same kind of Ridge here as on the cricket's wing with a microscope we can observe that this structure is very similar to The Ridge on the cricket's Wing So the grasshopper produces sounds in much the same way female Grasshoppers and crickets are distinguished from the males by their long egg laying tubes if we put some dirt into the cage we can observe a female grasshopper using this tube or ovipositor to lay eggs the osor consists of two separate parts which form a tube through which the eggs pass then the female withdraws and covers the hole if the ground is hard the female must struggle to pen at but each egg is buried deep in the soil here it is protected usually the eggs stay underground all winter before they hatch the female Cricut has the same kind of egg laying tube or ovipositor and like the grasshopper the cricet may lay hundreds of eggs in a single season this usually happens in the fall when food for these insects becomes scarce then each female begins to empty its body of eggs the ovap posor is plunged into the Earth the eggs slide down they are deposited beneath the surface here they will remain through the winter sometimes several are laid in the same hole many may be eaten by small animals or destroyed in other ways but there are so many of them that the species always survives the grasshopper eggs are slightly larger than those of the Cricut both kinds of eggs may be collected and kept in dirt at a low temperature through the winter until they hatch in the spring they will stay alive in covered jars like these Grasshoppers and crickets frequently die soon after they have reproduced remove the bodies and any pieces of food before putting the jar away for the winter the eggs will remain here just as they do out of doors in the ground when the winter is over the Earth will be warmed once again in the springtime the eggs will develop [Music] oh yeah um at some point I hope to find a color version of that because that was pretty pretty cool um all right um we're watching a bunch of uh cornet films because we have been slowly scanning all the Cornet films that the people that own cornet sent us that's like nine pallets of stuff that we got like three years ago slowly going through we've done two 2500 3,000 so far and we're still going um maybe that's halfway we're not sure but anyways that's why you're seeing a lot of cornette films uh because one we'd love them two we got them all right so this next film is uh featuring our great uh I don't know I what am i setting up for this is this is choser this is a film about choser enjoy [Music] [Applause] medieval England of the 14th century a land of small rural Villages and immense fortified castles medieval England a land of farms of large monasteries which were centers of religious training and of churches and Cathedrals where the faithful Came To Worship some of what we know about medieval England comes to us from medieval literature much of which was written in an early form of the English language among the many important pieces of literature of this period perhaps the most popular is the canbury tales by Jeffrey choser the cury tales written during the 14th century in Middle English is about a group of pilgrims who while away their time telling stories as they journey to canbury Cathedral a famous religious Shrine Cher introduces us to the pilgrims as they are gathered in the tabard Inn before setting out on their pilgrimage these people and the tales they tell are a cross-section of medieval life helping us to understand this period of English literature we can group the pilgrims into three social classes these are the basic classes of medieval English society first there is the nobility represented Here by The Squire and the Knight his father the frier The Parson and the monk are members of the second group of medieval Society the clergy the third group of medieval English society represented is the commoners this group consists of all those who are not members of the nobility or church some like the pleasure seeking Franklin the learned well read physician the wealthy and pompous Merchant the talkative wife of bath are important well well to-do people other commoners were the carpenter the plowman and the Weaver and so journeying to cabur are members of the clergy the nobility and the commoners in 14th century England each group had its own position in society it's own Customs its own literature let's see what the literature of the commoners was like what was the literature of this commoner the plowman what was his background the plowman's life was simple he had a home and a family but little else he could not read or write much of his time was spent in Endless hours of toiling in the fields he worked from sunrise to sunset what could such a man contribute to literature at the end of a long day he would return home and there he might sing or recite simple songs or ballads these ballads composed by unknown man like himself he had learned by word of mouth in the same way he passed them on to his children these ballads were the contribution of the common folk to literature some of the most famous Ballads of medieval England told of a hero named Robin Hood there are many of these and perhaps one of the most amusing is about Robin Hood and frier Tuck [Music] Hood his [Music] and carry me over the water th CLE fire or else thy life fall the pr took Robin on his back and stepped into the knee till he came at the middle stream neither good nor bad spake he and coming to the middle stream there he threw Robin in and choose the choose the fine whether thou sink or swim yes medieval ballads whether humorous or tragic are an important part of English literature and The Ballad was the literature of the plaman and commoners like him as Cher describes the plowman he was an honest worker good and true and as the gospel bad him so did he among the representatives of the church in the Canterbury Tales is the monk perhaps the monk lived in this monastery although Monastery life was simple and austere there was time for literature and study monks were often well educated and they produced a literature that reflected medieval Church Life some clergymen wrote treatises long discourses on religious subjects out of such Church writings grew another kind of medieval religious literature the mystery Play Written In Middle English the language of medieval England these plays were generally made up of simple plots adapted from Bible stories here is a scene from a mystery play based on the Nativity the birth of Jesus mystery plays were presented Outdoors on a simple stage these plays brought Bible stories to people who could not read in coming centuries great English writers would develop the simple techniques of the mystery play into dramatic masterpieces some medieval priests also wrote allegories some allegories are satires on current events told in thinly disguised terms such an allegory is Pier Plowman Piers Plowman is a satire written in verse the author was probably a Churchman he tells us that while wandering in the malver hills in the West Midlands of England he had a vision in his dream he saw Piers Plowman whom we might call Mr average citizen of medieval England and the injustices done to him by priests princes and politicians yet Pi is written with reverence for religion was a strong influence on the life and literature of the times but the the church and churchmen were changing in 14th century England and Cher's monk is a warm and human person who enjoys life and people there was a monk a leader of the Fashions inspecting farms and hunting were his passions he let go by the things of yesterday and followed the new world's more spacious way Cher tells too of the changing role of the nobility represented by the Knight and his son The Squire the knight's ancestors were probably partly of Norman stock the Normans had brought a new way of life to England their castles were centers of Norman life and Customs feasts were often occasions for entertainment a favorite entertainment of the nobility was listening to songs and stories of the Court Minstrel some of these stories were called romances romances told of the adventures and deeds of knights their Valor and courage their fearsome opponents and their Fair Ladies One famous medieval romance is the story of serwan and the Green Knight let's hear a portion of this romance in a modern translation a portion describing the Green Knight from neck to loin he was so square and thick set and his back and limbs were so long and Broad that I think he must have been half giant certainly I believe he must have been the tallest of men and the lustiest in size that could ride on horse his back and breast were sturdy and stout but his belly and waist were nobly slender and all his features alike clean cut the romance of serwan must have been written down by an educated and cultivated author when this was being written in the 14th century a new world was being born a world which had little time for the old ideals of Knighthood by the 15th century a Pros romance Mort darthur by Sir Thomas mallerie glorified the long gone days of chivalry Mort darthur the death of King Arthur is one of the last romances of an age when Knighthood was in flower for Knighthood was already declining in Cher's time and so through the elegant romances of the nobility the simple earthy Ballads of the commoner and the scholarly religious treatises mystery plays and allegories of the clergy we have inherited a sturdy and vigorous literature the literature of medieval England a literature that reached its height with the writing of the Canterbury Tales its author Jeffrey choser wrote the poem in Middle English just one step removed from the Modern English we read and speak today here are some of Cher's original lines from the Canterbury Tales a tale told by one of the pilgrims the parer let of us hold up his hand till o and each of us become an O's brother and we will slain this FAL death he shall be slain which they that so man slth be goddess dignity here it be Cher initiated a new period in English literature with his poetic story of a group of pilgrims making the long journey to the religious Shrine in the Cathedral at Canterbury the cury tales is a mirror of medieval life customs and language most important it is a reflection of the simple Vivid literature that has come to us from medieval England when we read this literature we are reading the Great Beginnings of a literature that would influence English speaking peoples for all time for e e that's muted too all right I'm sorry I'm so sorry yeah so the way that I have this set up is I can't see skip you silent film anyways yes so there were two places that I can mute and I for some reason muted in the software um and on the microphone I told a long story about bringing a sword to school high school during uh Canterbury Tales and um that I didn't get suspended and that um most other kids if they had brought a sword to school even back in the 80s probably would have been suspended so I count that as being uh privileged um and being a geeky white kid all right anyway so sorry so sorry um this is the stuff we throw away featuring our good friend Stuart Finley who was uh supposedly a DJ um or radio guy in uh the DC Metro area and he made a bunch of films a lot of them dealing with garbage trash and landfills so here's the stuff we throw away [Music] enjoy once upon a time there was a big American city that had a little problem a garbage strike as the days went by the little problem got bigger and bigger stacks of [Music] sacks how deep can this get [Music] in the better parts of town they had very high class [Music] garbage but in the low rent areas they had very common garbage but it's a funny thing all over town Swanky areas and slums alike things smell just about the same pretty stinky finally the people of this big city settled their little strike and many of them to this day remember the moral of the story that effective Solid Waste Management is essential in this complicated 20th century Urban [Music] civilization only if we protect and preserve the natural environment can man survive our discards we call them solid wastes jeopardize our continued existence the landscape becomes littered with dumps and then to reduce the volume we set fire to them thus diminishing one problem and creating another even more Insidious one air pollution Americans throw away over 5 l pounds of Refuge per person per day a staggering total of nearly 200 million tons a year unfortunately pollution is proportional to people collection and Disposal problems become aggravated when people live in concentrated areas it costs New York City $30 to collect and dispose of a ton of solid wastes throughout the country 133% of the population has no refuge collection service this results in indiscriminate dumping which litters the landscape and creates health [Music] hazards the president and the Congress have indicated great concern and programs are now underway to assist local communities the federal program which includes a wide variety of research and demonstration grants is predicated on one fundamental principle we must develop a better system ever wonder how solid wastes could be handled more effectively some new ideas from the Environmental Health Service here in a University of West Virginia laboratory A New Concept of incineration is being investigated refu already ground to uniform consistency is fed into a fluidized bed reactor equipment commonly used by the chemical industry to obtain controlled reactions between gases and solids here the modified pilot reactor becomes a furnace the gas is air moving up the column under pressure and the suspended solids are a mixture of particles of burning refu and inert sand which serves as a heat sink this is a simulation of the reaction occurring inside the furnace as the particles reach a fluidized state resembling boiling water at combustion temperatures the development of fluidized bed incineration is one of many varied projects conducted with federal aid under programs of the Bureau of solid waste management a branch of the Environmental Health Service Public Health Service US Department of Health education and Welfare the incinerator is still experimental but it already promises more complete and cleaner [Music] burning demonstration project Personnel examine the residue which constitutes only a small fraction of the original volume of the refu the fluidized bed incinerator stack emission contains far less particulate loading than conventional [Music] incinerators another University research project is examining Hospital wastes think how diverse they are in addition to the ordinary ones garbage paper and other dry combustibles and non-combustible such as bottles and cans hospitals generate unusual wastes related to medical treatment and surgical procedures that require special handling and disposal in order to develop data on the nature and volume of the various waste materials and to devise better management methods they are identified and carefully separated [Music] analysis of the different materials and their processing may even point to desirable changes in the design of Hospital service areas and waste handling equipment glass has few equals as a container it's chemically inert won't react with any other substance that's good but once millions of bottles and jars are discarded they won't burn or degrade they just lie there taking up space that's bad this team of Clemson University scientists is making glass with a difference it's soluble in water but what good is it for holding say soda pop well first it's put into a chemical vapor deposition apparatus and coated with a very thin film of inert material then it will hold anything break the film and the glass slowly dissolves so does the solid waist handling chore chickens and other animals concentrated in commercial cages and feed Lots contribute increasingly to the solid waste load in this University of California experimental closed hydraulic system water flushes the manure to a high rate oxidation pond there its nutrients are reclaimed photosynthetically in the production of algae the digested sludge can be used as fertilizer and the dried algae as supplemental food for ruminant animals resources from waste through [Music] research these students inspecting an abandoned strip mine are a new breed their Graduate Studies emphasize Environ metal control several universities are expanding their curricula to provide qualified engineers in this crucial area recognition that specialized training as well as imaginative research is essential for Effective Solid Waste Management and the total protection of our [Music] environment solid wastes are in the bag in barington Rhode Island The Heavy paper container holds mixed refu and is deposited bag and all in a sanitary landfill the simple efficient system after 3 years demonstration is proving easier for householders a Time and Labor saver for workers cleaner and more sanitary for everyone Town's people favor the system and a sharp increase in the volume of wastes collected indicates they're making greater use of a better service [Music] in a rural community house-to-house collection is economically unfeasible and random dumping in littering is unbearable Chilton County Alabama found a solution it's keeping itself clean and green with a network of Neighborhood Storage receptacles residents deposit their household refu whenever it's convenient [Music] the containers are emptied twice weekly and the accumulations placed in a central sanitary landfill shared with the county seat of Clanton and three smaller municipalities these cities continue to provide house-to-house collection but have closed their open dumps throughout the county about 90 small random dumps and their rat populations have been replaced by about the same number of Handy and tidy containers and one specially equipped truck a pretty fair Exchange [Music] the container and truck ideas applied in a different way in witcha Falls Texas here the containers have wheels the waste load is transferred to the mother truck for disposal at a sanitary landfill while a I was so excited I was like I was like oh my God that's that's a great film it's steuart friendly and I didn't look to see like oh I showed that back in July so um here's a different film um
