Hi everybody. I'm Skip Alzheimer. Welcome to the AV Geeks Lunchtime streaming show where we watch more movies and in particular 16mimeter films. And that last film was obviously wrong. something was wrong with it. Um, what what it was is that it was scanned uh probably upside down and backwards and so somebody fixed it so that it was looking right but didn't realize that it was still in reverse. Um, and that someone was probably me so I figured you'd get a kick out of that. Ah, so behind me is a scanner with a bunch of commercials. So, we're going to watch some commercials. All right. Uh, so let me change the name of this to TV commercials [Music] real 2. Um, thanks for joining us and uh I hope you see something that you like. Enjoy. ucing the wearing air freshenizer. [Music] From New York City across the continent to San Francisco, it's 3,000 miles or more. 3,000 miles from coast to coast. Today, we can span that distance in a few hours. By train, we can do it in less than 3 days. By truck and auto, it takes less than a week. Down through the ages, man's progress has always been closely linked with the way he has been able to overcome the tremendous obstacle of distance. In North America, it hasn't been many years since transportation was as primitive as it is possible to get. The Indians used only their own legs and their backs. They did not even know the basic invention of all land transportation, the wheel. Because travel was so slow and difficult, Indians lived in widely scattered tribes. They were isolated from each other by the natural barrier of distance. By the time Columbus reached the new world, civilization had been coping with transportation problems for thousands of years. But progress had been very slow. The voyage of Columbus represented a great advance. Yet his ships depended on wind for their power and were not much different from those the Egyptians had been using for more than 6,000 years. The European civilization which took root in the new land brought with it three basic inventions. The sailing ship, the wheel, and the beast of burden. These were vast improvements over what the Indians had known. Yet transportation, especially on land, was still slow and laborious. So, the main towns of the New World grew up at natural harbors where ships could land. Carriages and wagons provided transportation within the towns, but transportation between towns was slow. dangerous and expensive. From colonial New York to Boston, it usually took six days. When the roads were good, and when they were muddy, well, it took much longer. Yet, the nation's growth required better land transportation for passengers and freight. Although wagons and coaches were improved, the key to the further development was the building of good roads. In 1776, the main roads hugged the coastline connecting the harbor cities. But in 182 began the building of a national road westward from Washington over the mountains to Ohio and then onto the Mississippi. By 184, a network of inland roads began to take form. Away from the roads, transportation was still primitive. Pioneers used Indian canoes. Certainly not the best means of commercial transportation. But on the quieter waters that flowed into the Mississippi, large rafts called flatboats were loaded with produce by enterprising settlers and floated downstream to New Orleans and other river towns. A one-way trip that often took many weeks. Only a light cargo could come upstream, laboriously pulled on small keelboats. So the great Mississippi system, which blessed the interior of the continents, had to wait for a new invention before it could come into its own as a transportation highway. [Music] The invention came. It harnessed the immense power of steam. One of the first uses for steam power was in water transportation where the rivers could serve as roads. One of the earliest steamboats was like an oversized rowboat using a steam engine instead of strong backs. It wasn't efficient. The same inventor also built an experimental screw type steamboat. A paddleheer Fton's Claremont in 187 was the first commercial steamboat. The impact of a steamboat is hard to imagine today. It worked a near miracle in life of the growing nation. For the first time, it was possible to travel into the interior of the continent in comfort, indeed in luxury. [Music] The increase in travel was astonishing. By 1840, more than a 100 passenger steamboat sailed the Hudson River alone. But it was on the Mississippi River system that the steamboat came into its own. No longer was commerce limited to downstream travel only. Tealboats disappeared, but the economical flatboats stayed on. The river cities flourished. Some 4,000 steamboats docked at Cincinnati during the 12 months of 1848. New Orleans became one of the world's great trading centers. With steamboats arriving and departing all day long, the Mississippi River steamboats were carrying 10 million tons of freight a year, nearly double the nation's entire foreign commerce. [Music] In 1819, the Savannah had become the first steam ship to cross the Atlantic, and soon others were built. Most famous was the giant luxury liner, the Great Eastern. Now, energetic businessmen began to build canals to connect the river roots. The spectacular Eerie Canal from Albany to Buffalo linked the Atlantic Ocean with the vast Great Lakes system. It was the big ditch, the Grand Canal, gateway to the west, 365 miles through hills and actually over rivers in an aqueduct. In its first year of operation, it brought in over 34 of a million dollars in tolls. 15 mile on the eerie canal. She's a good old worker and a good old 15y canal. The eerie canal, spectacular though it was, was only one of many which were made economical by the feverish growth of transportation and commerce brought on by the seamboat. From 1830 until after the Civil War, the nation's commerce moved on the big rivers. The steamboat race between rival captains was a sport at the times, but sometimes the results were disastrous. [Music] Help! Help. Help. Save all those women and children. [Music] Away from the big rivers, transportation problems were as great as ever. Freight wagons were slow and cumbersome. Bridges were almost non-existent, and roads were few and very poor. As the nation moved westward, the need for improved land transportation grew. Steam power was hard to use with land vehicles. The big problem was road friction. Even a combination land and water machine, the amphibilus, was tried without success. Optimistic inventors tried using wind as a free source of power, but road friction was the major problem. Inventors came up with an answer. Rails used with horsedrawn wagons. Thus, one or two horses could do the work of many. In the early 1800s, several such railways were in use. Steam powered railways were slow to develop compared to the speed with which steamboats were adopted. The Tom Thumb was one of the famous early engines. It pulled a brigade of double-deck coaches modeled after the familiar stage coach of the day. These early trains could travel at the staggering speed of 15, sometimes even 20 m an hour. [Music] By 1830, the steam railway had proved its worth. New railway construction now began in earnest, and the nation began to take to the rails as it had to the steamboat. [Music] For the first time, there was a semblance of comfort in overland travel, except for noise, jolting, and hot cinders. For the first time, it was safe to continue traveling overland at night, and passengers, if they could, might get some sleep. In the 10 years between 1830 and 1840, almost 3,000 miles of track were built. By 1850, the total had tripled to about 9,000 mi of track. By 1860, it had more than tripled again to more than 30,000 m of track. Like the stebo, the railways had their share of accidents. Help! Save us. save all the women and killings and fall and care. No, no. But accidents didn't seem to hinder their phenomenal growth. In fact, cartoonists made light of railroad accidents by suggesting ways to avoid them. [Music] After the Civil War, railroads became the prime movers of the nation's commerce. Unlike steamboats, they were free to go wherever they could lay their tracks. They could move right through the city to the very doors of the big shippers. Steamboats found it hard to compete with this kind of service. In 1869, the first transcontinental track was laid, pushing west from Omaha and east over the Rocky Mountains from San Francisco. The two lines met in a roadless wilderness of Utah and the nation rejoiced. That meeting marked the end of the steamboat age. Now railroad travel and commerce flourished as the nation grew. Chicago became the jumping off place to the west. Omaha. The railroad station became a center of community life, not only for the cities, but for every little town. By 1880, there were 93,000 miles of track. By 1900, the total had jumped to 200,000 miles. And by 1920, the peak of railroading, there were 250,000 miles. statistics that few had envisioned at the historic meeting in Utah. The United States became a railroading nation. The iron horse, as the steam engine was called, became an object of story and song, of poetry and art. [Music] [Music] The names of railroads acquired a romantic ring. The Caden, the B and O, the Missouri Pacific, the Southern Room, the Erie, the Rock Island, the New York Central, the War, the Pennsylvania, the Seaborg, the Atlantic coastline, the Louisville and Nashville, and the Atera and [Music] in less than a century, transportation had made more progress than in all the thousands of years that had gone before. But the age of the railroads was soon to be challenged by other forms of transportation. That story is told in another film. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Applause] All [Music] right. So, we're going to give it one more shot. Um, there's all sorts of issues with uh these commercial reels as we've seen in the past, but the payoff is so high. So high. So, let's try it one more time. Um, but I'm I'm troubled that that ran so smoothly. I'm happy that it ran smoothly because you guys got to see it, but I'm just like, oops, something's something ain't right. Um, so what do I got for you? What do I got for you? I know. Let's learn about our 49th state, Alaska. [Music] On July 4th, 1959, a new state officially joined the Union of the United States. Alaska, the 49th state. The name Alaska is an Indian word meaning big land. The name fits well. It is a big land. The land area of Alaska is more than 16th that of all the other states combined. If the map of Alaska is placed over the map of the southern 48 states, it reaches from coast to coast. Since the state of Alaska is such a big land, it is a land of contrasts, a land of many different peoples, [Music] a land of many different jobs. [Music] A land of widely varied climates. [Music] Alaska is divided by nature into five areas. Southeastern Alaska, South Central Alaska, southwestern Alaska, including the Aleutian Islands stretching far to the west, interior Alaska, and the northwest and northern coastal areas of the state, only 56 miles distant at the Bearing Strait from Asia and Russia. The principal towns and cities of Alaska are Gnome in the northwest, Fairbanks in the interior, Anchorage, Palmer and Seward in the South Central area, and in southeastern Alaska, Sitka, Ketchacan, and Juno, the state capital. Southeastern Alaska is a land of mountains rising steeply from deep bays and inlets. Towns climb up the sides of mountains. Flat land is hard to find. This is Juno, the capital of Alaska. The town is named after Joe Juno, a prospector who discovered gold here in 1880. The gold is gone now, but there is wealth all around. On the land, timber in the sea, fish. These fishermen are Indians, natives of Alaska. Their ancestors lived here when the first Russian explorers came in the 1700s. Their ship is part of the commercial fishing fleet that takes millions of dollars worth of salmon and other seafood from Alaska's waters every year. [Music] These Alaskans also depend on fish for their livelihood. [Music] [Applause] Timber grows thick and tall in southeastern Alaska where it rains as much as 20 ft a year. Water is never far away and water is an economical way to transport the timber to the mills. The lumber mills operate the year round. Here is an example too rare in Alaska of a raw material being processed within the borders of the state. [Music] A great deal of this timber is used for construction in Alaska. Some is shipped to the states to the south. Some is shipped to Japan. Alaska's forests can provide plenty for all. There is also plenty of ice in Alaska. Rivers of ice in southeastern and south central Alaska. Huge glaciers move with infinite slowness and steadiness down from the mountain valleys to the sea. [Music] Located in south central Alaska is Anchorage, the state's largest city. Life here is very much like life anywhere else in the United States. Of course, there are differences. [Applause] Near Anchorage is Elmenorf Air Force Base. Military bases have contributed greatly to the growth of Anchorage and of all Alaska since the Second World War. [Music] The strategically located city of Anchorage is becoming one of the air centers of the world, a hub for polar and great circle flights. But there are other good reasons why Anchorage has become Alaska's largest city. Nearby is the Matanusa Valley, the leading agricultural region of Alaska. The summer days here are warm and very long, close to the land of the midnight sun, and the crops are rich. There are several rich farm areas already under cultivation in Alaska, but there are nearly a million acres of potential farmland not yet in use. This unused farmland is one of Alaska's great resources for the future. Too much of Alaska's food has to be shipped in from outside the state, making it expensive and scarce. There is a great need for new farms and new farmers in Alaska to produce food to feed this new state. Before crops can be grown, land must be cleared. Alaska remains a last American frontier. Taming the wilderness is a job for pioneers, but it's a job that can be done. Stretching far across the Pacific Ocean into the eastern hemisphere are the Aleutian Islands. Treeless and fogbound. Few people live on these barren islands. There are some fishermen and soldiers. Because of their location, the illutions are important as military outposts. The interior of Alaska is a broad rolling valley bordered and broken by mountain ranges. The Yukon River flows out of Canada across the interior of Alaska and onto the sea. The Yukon is one of the world's longest rivers. On its waters, the Stern Wheeler is still king. The interior is the home of many Alaskan Indians. Although touched more and more by modern civilization, the Indians life differs in many ways from that of other Alaskans. The Indian fishing wheel is an old and effective way to catch fish. [Applause] To a large degree, the Indians of Alaska live off the natural wealth of their land. Fairbanks is the principal city of the Alaskan interior. This modern city, Alaska's second largest, is only 120 mi south of the Arctic Circle. Sometimes it's 60 below here, but in summertime it's often in the '9s. Close to Fairbanks is the University of Alaska. No university in the world is located farther north. Fairbanks began life as a gold mining camp, and mining is still its principal industry. But gold mining today bears little resemblance to the methods of its romantic past. Today, streams of water pumped at high pressure wash away the earth that covers the goldbearing gravel. Water is pumped down to thaw the permanently frozen subs soil. An artificial lake is created and a huge dredge is floated on it. As the dredge moves slowly forward, an endless chain of buckets scoops up the thawed goldbearing gravel. [Applause] Inside the dredge, the gold is separated from the gravel by a sifting process similar on a grand scale to the old prospectors panning for gold. The methods of mining have changed, but the lure of the gold remains. The northwest and northern coastal area of Alaska is the home of the Eskimos. These people live in small settlements on the baron coasts. Much of their food comes from the sea. Some clothes are made from seal skins. Ivory from walrus tusks is carved into tools. On the treeless flats called tundra, the Eskimos raise herds of reindeer. Reindeer are not native to Alaska. The first were imported from Siberia in 1891 to provide the Eskimos with an additional supply of food and skins. The small Eskimo towns are widely scattered with few roads between them. Transportation is mostly by air. The problem of inadequate transportation is faced by all the people of Alaska. In all of this huge state, there are only 5,000 miles of roads and only 500 miles of railroads. Alaska is more dependent on air transportation than is any other state. There are more than 500 cities, towns, and settlements with scheduled air service. An airplane trip is as common in Alaska as a bus trip in other states. Many Alaskans living in isolated areas depend on the flights of the bush pilots for their everyday supplies. a phone call or radio message to the bush pilot and he purchases the needed supplies and delivers them by air. But shipping freight by air, even in large planes, is not economical. And the high freight costs of air transport must be added to consumer prices, helping to make them the highest in the entire United States. From Seward through Anchorage and onto Fairbanks runs the Alaska Railroad. It's no accident that Alaska's two largest cities lie on its right of way. Where there is transportation in Alaska, there is growth. The Alaska Railroad was built in 1920 by the United States government. The equipment is modern and the right of way spectacular. [Music] The railroad passes close by Mount McKinley, the highest mountain in North America. [Music] The railroad runs as far as Fairbanks and stops. [Music] Alaska's transportation problems are not only internal ones. Existing transportation between Alaska and the other states is limited to ocean shipping through the inland passage between Seattle and southeastern Alaska. Airline service between Alaska and the Northwest states and the Alaska Highway with connecting highways to the south. There are no railroads connecting Alaska with the states to the south. Shipping costs to Alaska by water have always been extremely high. This is due in part to the one-way nature of the shipping. Alaska imports much and exports very little. Ships must make the return trip empty, so freight rates on the passage up must also pay for the trip back. Commercial truck traffic moving on the Alaska Highway is a bright spot in the Alaska transportation picture. Built during the war for defense purposes, this allear highway has proven to be of great importance in peace time. Each mile of new highway points the way to Alaska's future. The wealth of this state has hardly been touched. The resources are there. How to get them out has always been the problem. A producing oil well is of little value without pipelines and roads to service it. Alaska also needs more factories and mills to process the natural wealth of the state within the state borders. New industries will mean new jobs. New products will mean lower prices. Alaska is building a permanent population on the promise of the great potential wealth held within its borders. The potential of growth for this new state is as unlimited as was the potential of the western territories of the United States when they became states of the union. Alaska will grow as they have grown. If you said in the comments, and then oil was found, um, which radically changed it all.
