foreign [Music] [Music] foreign foreign foreign foreign hello everybody feedback um hi I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where I'm outside I'm not at the archive right now my assistants are working diligently and I am outside somewhere because it's nice and cool there's a nice breeze outside it's overcast um so we survived the hurricane um thanks for your concerns um we didn't even lose power at the archive which was pretty amazing a couple of Limbs were down but really not any flooding either so very lucky uh compared to other folks in Ian's path um but again thank you for your concern um we have the archive and myself we've survived quite a few um hurricanes over the years and um the archive itself sustained some pretty bad damage back with uh Hurricane Fran and Hurricane Floyd that was a long time ago um when the archive was in a different house but uh we're pretty good we're getting better um let's see so we just watched a we watch old 16 millimeter films here and that was a uh part of the French tutorials series um that EB did and it was made by Milan Herzog and I actually met um when I was doing a show at the science museum I actually met herzog's daughter-in-law I believe his daughter-in-law are great granddaughter-in-law like her husband 's grandfather was Milan Herzog um and Milan did quite a few films for executive Britannica pretty amazing body of work and I guess he got to hang out in France for this series because there's a lot of traveling in France for it so it's pretty cool uh let's see um let's learn about some Apollo recovery uh we might have seen this before but I don't have a record of it uh in my spreadsheet but it's only four minutes so let's enjoy [Music] foreign [Music] man Journeys to the Moon he will use a large and complex transportation system it's called Apollo Saturn [Music] all told the assembly is 363 feet high and at ignition weighs over 6 million pounds of this the portion that will make the trip to the moon is the top 53 feet the Slender device at the very top is the launch Escape system if the launch is smooth and all systems operate properly it is discarded early in the flight [Music] the spacecraft consists of the Command Module the service module and the lunar module The Command Module is crew quarters cockpit and headquarters for the eight day voyage this is the only portion of the spacecraft that will return to Earth the atmosphere inside will be such that the astronauts will not have to endure the discomfort of wearing their bulky pressure-tight spacesuits all the time however for safety and emergency reasons one crew member will be in his spacesuit at all times directly below the Command Module is the service module in a sense this is the basement of the spacecraft here are the fuel cells that will generate the electricity required for the spacecraft radio antennas storage space for experimental equipment and tools Fuel and oxidizer tanks for the service module also contains the main propulsion engine for lunar and Earth travel as Apollo approaches the Earth the service module is abandoned and the Command Module returns a loan [Music] at launch the lunar module occupies the third position in the spacecraft during the lunar trajectory The Command Module and the service module fly out about a hundred feet turn around and come back to dock with the lunar module [Music] as the spacecraft approaches the Moon it looks like this [Music] the lunar module actually consists of two vehicles The Descent stage which is mainly the landing gear and an engine that is gimbaled and can be throttled and the ascent stage consisting of yet another engine and cockpit or cabin portion after the lunar exploration period The Descent stage is left on the moon as the ascent stage lifts to Rendezvous with the Command Module after the crewman transfer to the Command Module the lunar module is left in lunar orbit as the Command Module is steered into its Homeward course foreign service and lunar modules each performing an important job as man reaches for the Moon [Music] [Laughter] [Music] I love those uh pre-apollo launch films short kind of talk about what the thinking is for landing on the moon and it has all these great animations and the music is always so good feel like they should have just kept that like kind of that kind of fun like rocking um tune um even when they were landing on the moon you know having astronauts walk they should have had that kind of fun uh background music um maybe people would then believe that it was a real moon landing as opposed to all these doubts um because it was so sterile but the next one I have is accidentally tacked on to the end of the first film I showed so I have to kind of get to it it was um I don't know what happened but there's like three films spliced together and uh in this file so this is how to make a simple Loom and weave enjoy [Music] foreign is a popular craft enjoyed by all ages it's easy to do and can be learned so quickly weaving plays an important part in our daily lives many useful articles can be made here is a screen used as a background for flowers it was woven from bamboo shades and raveled strings the table mat from cellophane and cotton stream this knitting bag was woven from cotton yarn here a placemat of Raffia and bamboo would you like to know how to make a loom and weave there are four steps to remember first making the frame of the Loom second adding nails for the Warped string third stringing balloon and fourth weaving this simple Loom was easy to make from four wooden boards this is Ray he will show you how he made his move he chose soft Pinewood because it's easy to saw and nail what's what Ray will need besides the wood eight four penny box nails a quarter pound of three Penny finishing nails coping saw hammer and a sanding pot now we're ready to put our loom together so we will need a jig notice this jig is made of quarter inch plywood with one by one and a half inch wood strips on three sides we do not need a strip on this side now if we turn the jig around we can see the yardstick nailed on this side look we will measure the length of wood here notice these side frames of the Loom they will be measured off first place the wood on the measuring side and mark the desired length like this now turn the board around so you can mark two sides of the board now you can see the pencil marks and saw more evenly place the wood on a low stool then hold the wood securely by placing your knee and hand on it now begin to saw on the pencil marked line and use the coping saw with a downward angle like this do not force the saw too strongly or the blade will break so they finished the sawing his second side frame and places it in The Jig notice he will make these end frames next he will measure the desired length on the measuring side of the G and he marks it with a pencil and see how he turns the wood around to put pencil marks on the bottom inside of the board now you'll have guidelines while he's sawing watch Ray sandpaper each frame smoothly so splinters will not get into his hands he places the last frame in The Jig The Jig holds the wood while Ray hammers the first nail near the edge to hold the corners together using four penny box nails see where the second nail would be placed on this side it's away from the first nail to avoid splitting the wood race wears all corners of the Loom in this corner of The Jig while he holds the corners in place he will nail them see Rey has finished the frame for his Loom place a row of nails on the top frame and on the bottom frame to hold the warp string using three Penny finishing nails now notice this measuring board it will help measure distances between nails and to keep them in a straight roll now look use the holes at the red marks for one inch spacing use red and yellow for the half inch spacing and use all the holes for the quarter inch spacing place the measuring board on top of the end frame of the Loom and place your hands on it like this to line it up evenly with the loom measure off a half inch from the end of the frame before placing the first nail in the hole this avoids splitting the Wood Drive that nail in the hole now Drive the second nail a half inch from the other end like this these two Nails hold the measured board in place while you drive all the other nails Ray drives the rest of the nails and he places them one inch apart because he's going to weave with one inch wide material Ray is driving his last nail to finish this side watch how easy it is to remove the measuring board and see how straight this board kept the nails now turn the loom around notice how the measuring board will be placed on this side of the end frame Place Nails exactly as you place the other nails Now watch how to string the loom this is called warp string it is strong and can be bought at any department store place the warp Spool in a box while measuring off the amount needed count the nails on one side of the Loom take half of that number and wrap warp string lengthwise around the loom go around once more to give extra warmth to start and finish your warp stringing see how to wrap warp string around a piece of cardboard as you wind it off double this string for the length of the Loom place it on the second nail by going around the first and then come back to the other side Place one string on each side of the end nail bend the tie two knots slip the card of string through the double string and slide it over to the other end frame now watch this carefully go around the first nail and then the second and then the third on the other end frame continue to string the loom by placing the string around Nails each time you carry the string across the loom after placing the string around the last nail tape it like this to hold the tension slip the end of the string Under warp between the second and third nail make a loop pull and a string two Loop and draw up to tighten entire second knot the same way you did the first Ray is happy he's finished stringing his Loom it will be ready when he starts to weave this jig can be used to make many different size moons decide what you would like to make and then plan the size and shape of your loom you might weave a small rug on this long Loom or a purse table runner or pillow top on this smaller Loom use looms over and over again beginning young students will enjoy weaving on large Looms with warp Nails one inch apart this is the Woof it should be one inch wide weave it over and under the warp stream when a little older a smaller Loom with warp Nails placed a half inch apart will challenge more creative experiences a narrower woof-like rug yarn could be used high school students will enjoy still smaller Looms with warp nails at quarter inch apart and much finer woof to weave with the closer The Wharf nails are put together the narrower should be the woop place two curtain rods at the sides of the Loom like this if you are weaving back and forth it will keep the sides from pulling in weave around the rod each time you go across another way to keep the sides from pulling in is to loosen the warp strings feel the tension before beginning to weave try weaving with many materials raffia cloth ravelings rug yarn ribbons cellophane dyed Rags jute wool cotton and rayon threads nylon net metallic thread Reed bamboo and interesting wood and sticks children enjoy tearing strips of dyed sheets to use for woof it's easier to weave with one inch wide roof like this when you are just beginning to weave this is David a first grader with his Loom notice the nails are one inch apart this gives more space for small fingers to carry the wolf over and under the warp streams weaving relaxes David and gives him many hours of satisfaction and enjoyment it gives him a chance to use his hands in a creative and constructive way when weaving with short strips you do not need curtain rods David weaves interesting colors together notice how quickly he can weave over and under each warp stream now he pushes the whoop closer together so the weaving will be strong and see how he reverses the order of over and under each time he weaves across David has finished so he'll take his weaving off the loom because these three Penny finishing nails have no heads the warp string can easily be lifted off Now watch how quickly David slips the warp string off the nails David wove his mat for a gift for his mother it can be used for plants here Raffia and cotton string are being woven when finished weaving see how the rods can be removed renew Wu by overlapping and weaving the end of the old and you goof together like this do it the same way when changing to another material this Loom is longer and will need stronger support in the sides like curtain rods a piece of cardboard woven in at the ends adds support and measures the length of the frames these nails are placed a quarter inch apart so finer woof can be woven notice the shuttle made from a tongue depressor find woof is easier to work with if wound on a shuttle like this carry the shuttle around the rod each time you weave across the loom then weave it over and under the warp string like this beat the wolf string down like this notice how the warp string does not show in the finished weaving here the nylon nut is used for both The Wharf and the roof the warp shows and becomes part of the design Stitch around the edges to hold them in place when studying about the Navajo Indians you may want to weave in designs like this notice how to Loop yarn together each time you weave across if you do not Loop your yarn spaces like this will appear when finished weaving take it off from the loom like this notice how to push the roof toward the end to cover warp strings when weaving with bamboo strips place them between nails like this they act as the warp here yarn is woven over and under when finished lift strips of bamboo off the loom like this and here's the mat ready to be used as a placemat or a standing screen these mats were made from discarded bamboo shades and notice how bamboo strips can be cut in different widths this one has been painted blue now see how threads Ravel from material made interesting roof strings to weave with the bamboo you'll find many uses for these mats when first graders studied about the home they wove mats from dyed sheets and sew them together to make a rug experiment and try weaving texture in Border designs all over design or just plain colors many things can be woven from discarded materials for gifts at home and school why don't you try weaving with materials that have never been used before to see what new ideas you can create thank you [Music] so I actually uh and college took a textile class when I was in a school of design and we we wove and uh it's definitely therapeutic I mean we used a big big looms um but there is an attention span issue which I at the time uh was did not have the attention span to do it and that's pretty phones and pre uh tablets and pre-screens so uh I I can't imagine a kid getting into doing um weaving um in a kind of a post-screen world uh which is on which is regrettable because I think that there is value I mean I guess when I was a little kid we did the little um looms that made pot holders basically that's all they made um in um I think it was summer camp like a date summer Y Camp we did those and maybe even in vacation bible school and those were fun but there was a you know pre-internet um hanging out with friends a very different scene uh yeah so I'm happy to have shown that big fan of films like that they're just they kind of Deep dive into something this next film is about bird homes so enjoy bird homes foreign [Music] when the cold of winter is gone and warmth and color return to the Earth we hear the songs of many birds the cheerful song of the Robin is one of the most welcome signs of spring The Robin's home is saddled in this old tree a robin builds one of the most substantial homes in Birdland but by no means the only interesting one bird homes or nests are found in many places in swamps along the seashore in the desert in The Woodlands and even in towns and cities they may be perched high in the air hidden in the dark recesses of a tree or on the ground in this film we will see different kinds of bird homes and learn some of the interesting habits of their builders we will see the kinds of building materials they use and the places where they build their homes this Canada Goose builds her nest near water many birds seem to search out sheltered locations for their nests but some like this mother Canada goose make little effort to hide their homes from enemies perhaps because the goose is such a large and powerful bird it instinctively knows it can protect its home from most enemies Birds use their nests as places to lay their eggs and in some cases to cradle their young this Canada Goose Nest is built of grass and a blanket of Downy feathers now Mother Goose returns from feeding in the nearby Pond and marshes and once again takes her place on the nest goslings of the Canada Goose can swim expertly almost from the moment of birth since they find much of their food in or near the water this is an ideal place for them to make their homes here's another Nest built on the ground this one is near the seashore it's the nest of a turn can you see the two eggs in closer it's easier like other birds mother turn warms the eggs with the heat from her body when she leaves the nest warmth from the Sun on the sand helps to hatch the eggs her nest is a little Hollow the color of the eggs Blends so well with the color of Sand and Stone that they are well hidden from the eyes of enemies now mother turn his back to shade her eggs for long absence from The Nest would find the eggs overheated by the Sun tidal storms and animals that hunt for birds eggs destroy many turn nests if they do survive these baby turns will soon take their places among the tremendous flocks of this common water bird many birds attempt to hide their homes can you see the bird in this picture now it's easier see how well the color of this mother killdeer blends with her surroundings there's her nest and there are her four eggs The Nest is a slight depression in the ground lined with grass killed ear eggs are pale buff in color with blotches of black do you know what mother Kildare is doing now she's trying to get an enemy to follow her away from the nest and here is the villain pretending to be hurt May attract the hungry snake away from the nest the kildeer's broken wing act also warns other birds of an intruder in about 26 to 28 days the eggs are hatched even the young birds are well hidden in their surroundings because of their coloring notice the white collar about the neck of each baby this is one of the distinguishing marks of the Kildeer baby killdeers leave the nest shortly after birth since they can run about they have a better chance to protect themselves on our Western Plains the mourning dove sometimes nests on the ground her nest is a flimsy structure of little Twigs notice how her color keeps her well hidden doves lay two eggs and have three or four Broods during each breeding season this little burrowing owl has its home in a hole in the ground it prefers abandoned animal Burrows like those of the skunk or prairie dog but is capable of digging its own home if the ground is soft The Nest is usually lined with weed stalks and broken bits of cow and horse done the burrowing owl is very active and quite odd in its movements some birds like to attach their nests to structures that have been built by man the Phoebe likes water and has attached her nest under this bridge it is so dark here we have used an electric light to show the nest of mud and Moss in this Woodland not far from water is the nest of the green heron a tree with dense foliage often Evergreen is a favorite site with the nest anywhere from 15 to 20 feet from the ground the Heron's Nest is an untidy structure it's an unlined platform of loose sticks herons have four or five eggs of a pale green color although usually solitary nesters herons often live in colonies with other herons or grackles among scattered small trees or dense Shrubbery we find the yellow warbler its nest is usually within 10 feet of the ground and is placed in an upright Fork of a small tree or shrub The Nest structure is an interlacing of bark and plant fibers and grass and plant Downs the eggs numbered two to six but there are usually four with its Rich decorative plumage the yellow warbler is a beautiful bird these baby warblers are now ready to leave the nest next to sparrows we have more kinds of Warblers than any other birds some birds like the woodpecker use their sharp beaks to Chisel their homes in the trunks of decaying trees this woodpecker is busy bringing food to her nest can you see any of the babies peering from the cavity that is their home swamps and bayous in warm climates are the nesting places of the anhinga or Snake Bird its popular name is the water turkey the anhinga is about three feet long the male is mostly a glossy greenish black its nest is constructed of sticks leaves dry grass roots and Moss the anhinga's Stout webbed feet and sharp claws enable it to climb with ease notice the long necks and the snake-like movements of the necks of these birds red-tailed Hawks build large and bulky nests high above the ground in the forks of large trees a platform of sticks lined with smaller Twigs bits of bark Fern leaves and Moss make up the nest the great horned owl often makes its home in the deserted nest of other large birds those of red-tailed Hawks bald eagles and herons are frequently used cactus wrens usually make their homes in the thorniest places of the choya cactus see how well they are protected purple martins are Community dwellers and like to live in box-like houses provided there in the open and up on a 15 to 20 foot pole often a dozen or more pairs of these birds will occupy as many compartments of a bird box birds are common and easily observed forms of animal life knowing the common varieties in your neighborhood helps you understand nature better and learning the habits of birds that are new to you can be an interesting Hobby a study of birds can be not only delightful but also of value to science there is still much that we do not know and your observations May contribute some worthwhile knowledge about this world of living things [Music] how about that there was some weaving in that film too what a coincidence foreign on Saturday I actually did a live show kinda I was uh in Raleigh at well actually so Thursday I did a live show too I was at uh DHL Library in uh NC State campus and we showed films about sharks uh I had an expert talking about sharks and then Friday or Sunday Saturday at transfer Food Hall uh next to a giant mural of erect a Trailways bus I showed uh bus safety zones um so I'm beginning to stretch out a little bit and start doing some live screenings um so I'll start talking about them more and more as we um book more of them but I'm excited and this will probably be in the Triangle first and then as things open up more maybe I'll travel maybe to your town um definitely Austin because there's um the Alamo Draft House headquarters are in a old high school and I have a lot of high school films so it just seems like a no-brainer for me and they have a giant gym cafeteria space where I'm like oh dude I totally should do stuff there anyways uh this next film is uh Consuela and part of it says Spanish and this is faded red um but it is subtitled and it is kind of fascinating it's it's it's one of these films that was made in the late 60s early 70s and it's looking at kids who come from different backgrounds that have ethnic ethnicity in that they were probably born in the United States but their parents were not born in the United States and these kids trying to reconcile being uh a U.S citizen but also uh how their culture uh from their family affects their lives and sometimes they're in conflict and sometimes they're not but there's there's a couple of films like this uh Pamela Wong is it like one of my favorite films a perfect example of that um so here's Consuela enjoy [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign cuentos a bilingual class and everything is great um and what's that Los Lobos we think I don't know I have no idea like it seems like it's a kind of common name kind of common but I don't know maybe maybe it was that's that's kind of exciting um but yeah that um that whole sense of you have uh people with a from a rich culture a rich background and americanizing them you don't even speak American um is it's fascinating and it hasn't changed uh really outrageously uh has not changed uh and not realizing the fact that uh what makes America great uh was all the cultures that came and what they brought um you know contributing to what we call the Great American Melting Pot which was something that was talked about a lot I when I grew up that's like oh we have people from all different backgrounds bringing wonderful stuff to the table it certainly makes for better food um because what the British brought wasn't very good um anyways thanks for tuning in today uh even though I'm not at the
