e e e e e is for is for all is hi everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and that was a silent kind of news reel but really kind of more of a Oddities re and obviously it was playing back at the Ron's speed it was playing back at Sound Speed which is 24 frames a second and it probably should have been playing back at silent speed which uh depending on the format can be either uh 16 frames a second or 18 frames a second or somewhere in between it could be any of those things um so I am in our dining room where there is actually uh below me is a a puzzle that we're working on so I'm actually working on the puzzle as we're watching uh videos um happy birthday Kevin if you're out there um he is a frequent uh viewer submitter um so if he shows up I don't see him right now in the comments but if he shows up everybody wish him a happy birthday uh he's a North Carolina guy based in a triangle and he comes to shows when I do them live uh locally uh so this next film uh this kind of goes out to the folks in the Los Angeles area who are dealing with the fir uh with forest fires or at the very least power outages um that are happening because of all the winds um this is uh downtown's Grand Central Market enjoy for [Music] oh [Music] I just got the come on girlfriend [Music] you [Music] why e [Music] [Music] eat [Music] and home eat it [Music] [Applause] oh [Applause] [Music] J [Music] oh [Music] I love me a uh City Market um Raleigh had one in the 50s and 60s uh because I have footage of it but they got rid of it and now it's there's a couple of good restaurants there but it's it's not really what it used to be um my favorite one of my favorite ones is a terminal market in Philadelphia lots of vendors lots of good food lots of there's like Amish uh vendors there uh with like delicious cheese and produce uh there's fish there's of course then all these wonderful places to get U lunch or dinner or breakfast um big fan of that all right let's go to Hawaii enjoy [Music] now [Music] momy C [Music] fore fore [Music] [Music] a step on the [Music] [Music] gas step on the gas going my [Music] way what happened um I guess it ran to the end uh quicker than we thought um so anyways that was what we call a soundy and soundies were traditionally made for and shown on panoram machines which were uh quite literally a dupe box of film and this was marketed to uh bars and clubs that really couldn't afford or didn't have the space for a band uh so this was an opportunity to have some entertainment and so what you could do is you'd put like a nickel in and it would play a film now it was n sophisticated enough to play a film that you could choose but it had a it had kind of a continuous role of films on a loop so I think there was I don't know like 5 10 per Loop maybe more and uh you put your Nickel in and then it would play this like Proto music video um and there's lots of them out there uh they were later released for home markets uh Through official films or through Castle films but a variety of different performers there was another company called snater telescriptions that would do the same thing and basically what they excuse me what they would do is they would pay a a musician that was traveling through some town in Texas maybe I can't remember I want to say Texas but they would pay them like 50 bucks or 20 bucks and say like hey uh can you record a song with us and they'd perform a song maybe just play along to their record and then they get paid and then this would be this little performance that they did so um uh that technology got a little bit better in the 60s there were these things called scopa tones and those were in color and those actually were set up in a way that you could choose which uh film you wanted to watch and there was a maybe 10 of those and um basically I've seen one of them working uh with new or contemporary music uh at Third Man Records in Nashville um uh Jack White uh actually commissioned to have his music uh some of his white stripes and his solo projects put on this uh scopa tone and so it's kind of interesting all right this next film is uh a look at I and I don't know if this is I think this is Soviet Union but I'm not sure where but this is about uh this train that operates in that area enjoy [Music] man in the uniform the man who is speaking is Petra mihalski he just said said the 3:00 train is leaving pmy I still have an hour 1 hour that's about three more trout Yanka will be happy Yanka is his mother she'll be happy about the trout in his sack Petra works for the railroad which explains his uniform the uniform is more impressive than the train but impressive or not for the local people it's the only train they would have to see others to judge this one and around here they never have known any others Petra mihalski is going to make the evening run on the orid express he has time and doesn't like to hurry Petra knows how to live he takes it easy and when from his train he sees this tiny corner of Yugoslavia he feels very happy Petra looks and listens the play of sunlight the clattering of the carts the russets and greens following the train all year long these are the things that make Petra's day [Music] he has only one regret he would like to be a fisherman and spend the whole day on the [Music] water he's not a fisherman because his mother Yanka having spent her whole life as a peasant did not want want him to be one Petra her oldest son would be an administrator and so he is Petra doesn't complain he envis his brother Marco who is a fisherman but their mother no longer Bears a peasant's [Music] burden Petra is saying that life here is very good when the hot Wind Blows there are plums to quench your thirst they ripen just when needed to relieve the summer heat there are three trains each day on this line from prek to orid 60 km in 3 hours the afternoon train carries wood from the mountains to the mine sacks of grain too during the harvest season it's a long run and the load is heavy his friend Nicola likes the afternoon run he is a rugged fellow when the train is too heavily loaded to pass over a steep grade Nicola loves the process of backing up detaching some cars and going forward again some people like extra problems not better though he prefers the evening train which carries passengers he's good natured and loves people he's not interested in their politics or religion he likes to watch people to see how they live and what they're doing he knows that sofa Dona is going to show off her newborn baby to her parents now living in gnik he knows that the petris every year Harvest their Bley before everyone else he knows the passenger told him he heard that in other parts of Yugoslavia grain is milled in enormous machines quickly and efficiently Petra thinks about this every time he sees the animals moving round and around he knows that progress has come to other places more quickly than here he doesn't like to think about this in other places there is greater need they get along all right here [Music] [Music] somewhere a clock sets time going again when Petra gets up and sees the people of his village going about their daily tasks a phrase comes back to him again and again in other places it is different [Music] is it bad that women go about their daily chores is it bad that their children are always near them or in their arms is it bad that men make a living by fishing on the lake instead of working at machines machines do things more quickly but why go more quickly is time in a hurry and what we to do with the extra time machines make for us it's for this reason he would like to have been a fisherman time passes all by itself when you're fishing there's no need to get impatient that's what he loves about fishing time passes without the help of machines what machine could dry tobacco better than the Sun what machine could take care of the laundry better than the water of the [Music] [Music] lake he knows these people take great pride in wearing their best clothes on Sundays he knows the women take great pride in the shirts they make for their husbands and [Music] children there's nothing better than Lake water for these shirts when the washing Begins the backs of the women are supple as they prepare the fire to boil water later spines grow weary bending under the weight of the heavy cloth Petra's passengers tell him that in other places women don't work this hard he knows that there are even some who don't work at all here the women are healthy and strong they manage the laundry and their other work as it should be they do women's work and everything goes well elsewhere in the north where there are machines women's work has changed it's their right but here it's another story whether the fishing is good or bad whether or not the tobacco and corn harvests are plentiful there is always the sun and water of the lake to make things seem all right [Music] Petra says these problems don't concern him he doesn't worry about the future of the country nor what will become of the children who live near the lake will they be fishermen like Marco will they be Farmers like the rest of his family these are the things which Petra doesn't like to think about things will continue as they are and when they change it will be tomorrow or even after tomorrow but never the same day or so it seems orid is the station where Petra starts his work he hears the train coming into the station and knows he can't linger anymore the evening run the conductor's orders at Lance of the engine he knows so well this concerns Petra in other places they have more modern equipment at Scopia and belgrad he has seen some it amuses them to ask the age of his engine it dates from 1895 he knows their amused smile and condescending manner he sees the way they make fun of him and he doesn't like it he has often dreamed of running a wheel train between B and Scopia passing through orid a real train with tracks running off to Infinity the train is something which concerns pet he' like that to change quickly not tomorrow though at this moment he feels almost enough courage to want the progress of other places to come to this corner of Macedonia he knows that it's possible once again he sees passing before his eyes the lives of men and women from his home and now he no longer envies even his brother Marco pulling in his Nets on the lake now everything becomes calm and simple for pet things will continue as they are and if they change it will be tomorrow [Music] so uh that was shot in Macedonia or or North Macedonia uh there uh are debates with Greece about who owns the word Macedonia or the country or the region and so I think they decided to just call themselves North Macedonia and uh they used to be part of Yugoslavia so uh that was under some sort of communist rule um and then uh when Yugoslavia fell then they all there were these different little countries based on regions and there was Civil War among some of them anyhow so that narrator man it sounded so familiar and I was like why does he sound familiar and I'm like oh he also narrated this film enjoy my story concerns a strange event that took place but whenever the town's people gathered together rumors were exchanged rumors that other numbers lived in the dark woods beyond the mountains but no one could imagine a number that wasn't a natural number so no one believed the rumor at that time nobody worried about robberies because if for example five stole something he would always take five of whatever he stole there was no special reason that was just how he did things and seven would steal seven things and 10 would steal 10 things no more no fewer and because of this the thief could be easily identified so there weren't any robberies and no one bothered to lock things up but one day there was a robbery nine who is the baker rushed over to the Sheriff's Office 763 who is the sheriff lean back in his chair and asked nine what was stolen uh just a just a little piece of bread one piece of bread said 763 I can't believe it one is the mayor he would never steal no no said nine not not one piece of bread a little piece of bread not one piece of bread but a piece said 763 what kind of nonsense is that I'll show you said nine then you'll understand 763 hurried over to the bakery shop and was amazed at what he saw only a part of one loaf was missing he couldn't imagine who could have taken it one would have taken one whole loaf two would have taken two whole loaves but none of the numbers would take less than one whole loaf all right if no number can take it then no number did take it but someone did take it someone or [Music] something that night 763 and 9 hid in the back of the bakery and [Music] waited suddenly a little creature in a black cloak crept in through the door and scurried over to one of the cakes it Cut the Cake into three equal pieces and took two and scared out leaving the third piece behind 763 and 9 ran after the strange creature 763 caught it by the cloak and pulled it off 763 and N steep back in horror when they saw what was beneath the cloak it looked like a miniature two on top and a miniature three on the bottom it's horrible sweet nine then before they knew what happened the creature ran off after it after a long and hopeless Chase they thought they saw the creature run into an old bar on the edge of [Music] town but neither of them wanted to go inside while it was dark so they decided to wait until morning at Daybreak nine went back to town to get help by that afternoon a large crowd had gathered in front of the barn and suddenly The Barn Door began to open and a strange creature emerged but it wasn't the same one that 9 and 763 had seen the night before it looked like a miniature 4 on top and a miniature six on the bottom I I'm sorry if I Disturbed anything it said I live in the dark woods beyond the mountains I wanted to see what was on this side of the range what about that other thing asked nine what thing asked the strange creature it had a two on top and a three on the bottom and it it stole my bread and cake oh that's 2/3 I didn't know he was here too he's a real scoundrel uh uh are there many others like you in the woods yes of course there are what do they look like well said the creature there's one half he has as you say a one on top and a and and a two on the bottom and 54s has a five on top and a four on the bottom and I'm called 46 is there asked five a creature in the woods with a with a five on top and a five on the bottom too no not in the woods said 46 he's he's right here where right there but that's one our mayor oh yes he could also be called 5 fifths said 46 if nine would bring some cakes from the bakery I'll explain how now this cake is for me uh so I would cut it into six equal pieces and eat four of them if you gave the cake to that scoundrel 2/3 he'd cut it into three equal pieces and eat two of them and one half would cut it into two equal pieces and eat one of them 54 would need two cakes he cut each cake into four equal pieces and eat five pieces for6 then asked five to cut a cake into five equal pieces then 46 said tell me one how many pieces of that cake would you eat why said one I I'd eat the whole cake of course but how many pieces is that well it's five pieces exactly said 46 that's 5 fths 5 fths is one of your forms if you really concentrate you can change forms so that you'll have a five on top and a five on the bottom so one concentrated and concentrated and he became a five on the top and a five on the bottom but his wife 186 was so upset to see her husband in this state that he changed back immediately you see said 46 you're a rational number just like me and like all the numbers who live in the dark woods beyond the mountains but what's a rational number asked one well any number that can change itself so that it has a natural number on top and a natural number on the bottom is a rational number explained 46 can I do that too asked five certainly said 46 all natural numbers are also Ral numbers pick a bottom number are two three all right said 46 you eat five cakes so we'll let three cut each cake into three equal parts now how many pieces will you eat let's see said five I'll eat 3 6 9 12 15 15 pieces so one of your forms is 15 over three said four6 because when you cut each cake into three equal pieces you eat 15 pieces and it was true for with that five changed into 15/3 but three his girlfriend fainted so he changed right back again well said 46 the sun's going down and I must be on my way uh goodbye fellow rational numbers just a moment said 763 where is 2/3 he's wanted for burglary I don't know since we're all rational numbers I'm no more responsible for him than you are that's right said one have a safe journey 46 and remember you're always welcome to return afterwards nine discovered he could become 18 over2 and one said I'm 2 over two and 3 over3 4 over4 5 over 5 wait a minute cried 763 all of us can have many different forms that's right said the others then said 763 pointing to the mountains they can have different forms too of course agreed the others then said 763 46 can take other forms also what do you mean I just have a hunch said 763 look at this piece of cake if we cut it into six equal parts our friend 46 would eat four of them that's right agreed nine so we'll put four pieces on this tray now ask 763 how much would 2/3 eat well nine said he'd cut it into three pieces and and interrupted 763 eat two of them but but that's what 46 would eat shouted nine exactly then said nine 4 sixes is is the same as 2/3 finished 763 I'm going after him maybe I can still catch the [Music] scoundrel throughout the years many of the rational numbers from the woods came into the town to join the natural numbers until the time came when all of them lived there even 2/3 came and 763 continued to chase him but 2/3 always found a new form to escape from [Music] 763 many years later rumors came that strange new creatures were now living in the dark woods beyond the mountains the rumors said that these creatures were numbers too but they couldn't take the form of a natural number on top top and a natural number on the bottom it was said that some of these numbers were rational numbers but some [Music] weren't but no one could imagine what a number would be like that couldn't take the form of a natural number over a natural number so no one paid any attention to the rumor [Music] so the narrator's name is Peter Smith um that's why I I showed this film is because he was the same narrator as uh with the uh orid Express uh which we saw before hey happy birthday Kevin let's all wish wish Kevin a happy birthday uh he is a frequent contributor uh supporter uh he comments a lot and um so uh let's wish him a happy birthday all right um we showed an Air Force now I think last week and it was riddled with popular music uh I did not get the stream taken down but certainly it showed up uh a bunch uh the next day in emails um from YouTube so we'll see if this one's any better um enjoy no no come on no no no no my Bo my bo [Applause] [Applause] bo this is Air Force now [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] super hi I'm captain Kathy lasauce and that was me in the pool after my first solo flight in the t37 I'm now flying the t38 Talon I'm one of the first 10 women to fly this aircraft as a student in undergraduate pilot training during World War II the United States trained hundreds of women to become the air cor's first female Pilots the Wasps as they were known flew thousands of non-combat hours during the war and contributed greatly to the final Victory last year in a test program the Air Force again opened flying training to women at mayther Air Force Base California Six Women officers are now enrolled as student Navigators and are scheduled to graduate in October 1977 and at Williams Air Force Base Arizona 20 women were enrolled in two undergraduate pilot training classes the second class has just started the first stage of training in the t-37 while the first class has progressed to the more advanced t38 as commander of the t38 Squadron here at Willie I have viewed firsthand the fine job that the women are doing in the upt program they are completely integrated in the program with their training schedule being exactly the same as the men they expect to be treated and are treated the same as any other student in an 11-month training program many students encounter problems and the women are no exception however they're dealing with these problems and progressing satisfactorily in fact of the 10 women who start in the first class all are still in the program they're meeting the same course training standards as the men and I think this shows they can hold their own in the program [Music] most of the pressure that that I feel and and most of the other girls feel is is the pressure that we impose upon ourselves to do real well um it's like starting out in any field you can't just be good you've got to do better you've got to be better than good and I think this is the pressure that a lot of us have imposed on ourselves is to try to to do as good as we can that sir did you get the take off time yeah 12:25 to 13:31 looks good I'll catch up with you later I just came down from Captain Engles contact check flight although under the stress of an evaluation she flew a very good Mission she has a lot of confidence in her abilities and overall made very few mistakes been a check pilot for more than one year and consider this one of the best flights I've seen so far IP is a really special person the IPS I've flown with I think the world of and I'm really excited about who I'm flying with and that's important you need to have that Rapport you got to like the IP the turn of the U the Shondell going out of the bottom of the area of course you know you don't want to do it initially the women came over to the squad there was a lot of anticipation as far as how they were going to do how things were going to change in the squatter there's no change at all really nobody really noticed any big problems at all the women are are doing fine they encounter the same kind of problems that many if not all the males encounter while going through the program and uh I for one as well as a lot of other IPS have not had to change their techniques at all or or program themselves in any different way just because they're flying with women this program teaches you budgeting of time like I know I try to do all my academic homework on the weekends and just try to get the full week's worth of of work and problems done on the weekend you have to study at night but usually for the next activity whether it's an instrument ride or a contact Mission you mentally prepare for the flight the first women have done well in the program up to this point but they are now approaching the most demanding portion of our flying training program formation they have only had to deal with the problems associated with their own aircraft but now they must include in their thought process the problems involved in flying with as many as three additional aircraft based on their past performance I think they will also handle this portion of the training well la [Music] leaders grams the metric system what is it it's not just a school exercise of changing ounces to grams or liters it's something that all of us in the Air Force will become a lot more familiar with in years to come the change to the metric system or the International System of units as it's officially known is happening already some of the packages in the stores are already showing their sizes in metric terms television weather forecasts give the temperature in both our old friend the Fahrenheit scale and in something called Celsius and foreign car owners no longer have to look all over town to find a set of metric wrenches to work on their pride and joy some 1977 cars already have their speedometers marked in both systems and all cars have the duo markings by 1982 frankly part of the reason is that the United States is a minority in a world that uses the metric system last year only brunai Burma Liberia Yaman and the United States have been holding out against metrics how is the change going to affect us in and out of the Air Force I was recently stationed in Europe when I found myself involved in several NATO countries exercises working with different mechanics from these countries as time went on we became involved in the metric system at first I found it somewhat difficult to understand but as time went on I learned to understand exactly what the metric system was about and eventually we worked out a common level of understanding between us if you've had an overseas tour recently you probably became accustomed to converting kilometers to miles and you know that a little more than a kilometer and a half is what we know as a mile but there will come a time when those of you in the motor pool may have to have both kinds of tools and both kinds of Parts but don't look for a sudden complete change over to metric next week or next year we aren't going to suddenly make all of our measurements in metric the parts for our present planes and missiles won't change according to Air Force planners new systems will be designed in metric present planes and miss and cars and trucks will stay the way they were and we're told most football and baseball fields will also stay in feet and yards in years to come we will be joining the rest of the world in a measurement system that is logical easy and consistent hi I'm George Wilson we've all seen the short messages at the bottom of our leaving earnings statements about the Air Force Recruiting assistance program this one says the program provides an opportunity for each member to help ensure a bright future for the Air Force it's true you know we can help the Air Force and our friends or acquaintances they can benefit from the many opportunities for training education and a direction to their lives that the Air Force offers now the Air Force isn't for for everybody and the Air Force certainly doesn't want just anybody either because the quality of the Air Force depends on the quality of its people if you know a young person with the potential that the Air Force needs you know somebody you'd like to serve with talk to them about the Air Force you'll be helping them improve their lives and you'll be helping us keep our team the best one going [Music] this flight simulator is actually a complex computer computers play a large part in our flight training from the basic through the advanced procedures and Maneuvers each of us no matter what our Air Force specialty is directly or indirectly involved with computers every day they are valuable tools which enable us to perform our jobs faster easier and more accurately [Music] [Applause] open [Music] 1947 marked the birth of both the United States Air Force and the world's first electronic digital computer the Air Force use of computers grew as computers did from the massive limited capacity early machines through the second generation transistorized computers to today's integrated circuit computers which serve as the central nervous system for our modern Air Force because computers are so important in the air force today every Cadet at the Air Force Academy takes a course in computer science so that he can learn how the computer works and how to effectively use it basically there are three kinds of computers large computer systems or Maxi computers are used in places like the finance Center or MPC where we have to process large amounts of information or in places where we need to support lots of people doing a variety of different jobs each year the centralized military pay facility at the accounting and finance center in Denver pays 6 and5 billion to 580,000 active duty personnel as well as retired and Reserve pay jumps inquiries please jumps inquiries start nby delute Minnesota the center receives 40,000 telephone requests a month for routine pay information and can furnish the answers immediately in most cases as the circuits search their electronic memories in thousands of a second okay base pay is 84990 theq is uh 19830 he's drawing ProPay at $150 a month our paychecks arrive on time and accurately thanks to computers and the skilled experts who operate them many computers such as this are much smaller and cheaper they are used to support combat operations whether that be aboard an aircraft or in a combat Operation Center such as NORAD among the most sophisticated computer systems ever developed is norad's Cheyenne Mountain Complex which must provide ballistic missile and bomber early warning information for the defense of our continent the satellite surveillance system 23,000 m in space and radar sensors on the ground constantly feed information to the complex where computers keep track of all man-made objects in space and potential new threats the computer's ability to accept process and furnish information to norad's evaluators help ensure that our defense system has maximum warning of enemy attack command control and management need information and modern defense can't rely on maps charts and pins computer furnished graphs readouts and video displays give come access to virtually any aspect of any problem sack is the largest user of computers in the Air Force it's vital worldwide mission is accomplished effectively and at the most economical cost in people time and dollars through the use of computers programmed to meet Sac specific needs this this is probably the computer of the future it's a microprocessor these processors are very inexpensive and require very limited space and yet they perform the same functions that are performed by the larger computers at the Air Force avionics laboratory computers help engineers in the research development testing and evaluation of avionics for tomorrow's Air Force here new ideas and Concepts in navigation communication electronic Warfare surveillance reconnaissance and weapon delivery are limited only by the imagination of man and computers allow men New Freedom in the exploration of the frontiers of Technology whether it be a small handheld calculator like this one or a large scale computer system like the one behind me computers affect the lives of everyone in the Air Force in the way we do our job get [Music] so my guess is this was distributed to TV stations looking for free content um and also probably maybe to schools but you know you you saw it's like an informational thing that talks about women pilots the metric system about Strategic Air Command um so it's like a magazine show we would call it um and I have a couple of these uh so uh I noticed that uh one of the scenes was at rri Patterson Air Force Base which was near uh where I grew up in Ohio uh I I grew up in Park Lane Ohio which was near fairborne and Fairborn was where rright Patterson Air Force Base was um supposedly that's where Hangar 18 is um uh what else is there oh yeah um for a long time since the 70s it was a place that uh library of congress's nitrate film collection was stored in the M munition bunkers uh because they had experienced a pretty horrible fire at one point and so it was all stored at these these munition bunkers so if they blew up then they wouldn't you know it would just take out one of the bunkers um that all those films then eventually migrated to uh the library Congress fac facility which is in C pepper Virginia in Mount Pony um so anyways there you go uh thanks for
