foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films on a wide variety of topics uh that one was Dr billing exercise for the correction of dismmonaria which is basically menstrual cramps um fascinating really interesting film uh and you know maybe legitimately trying to help women um there's a whole thing about how uh supposedly doctors just would discount any type of menstrual uh pain and just saying like oh that's rare it doesn't happen you'll get used to it you know stuff like that so this is interesting evidence that somebody was trying to figure out a way to deal with it with some interesting exercises uh all right so uh let's learn about the Dynamics of a crash enjoy frontal car crashes each year they kill thousands of Americans and injure hundreds of thousands the majority of all fatal injuries to people and collisions occur in head-on and angled frontal car crashes in a frontal crash it's all over in a Split Second let's imagine that we're in the front seat of a car like this that these test dummies are me for you or someone you love watch the car is a wreck and the occupants are a wreck too but it needn't be this way for them or for us this is a vehicle test track and these are test dummies on the highway they'd be real people let's take a very slowed down look at what happened to dummies like these in that frontal crash we saw a moment ago the car is traveling at 35 miles an hour now the car contacts an object ahead here it's a test barrier in the real world it might be a bridge Pier a tree a pole or another vehicle the car is being brought to a crushing stop meanwhile inside the car the people keep moving forward at about the same speed 35 miles per hour until they crash into the structures ahead their crash began a split second after the car struck the barrier here's the crash again from inside the car now the car has started to impact the barrier fraction of a second later the unrestrained occupants begin their crash in that critical moment had the people been provided with sufficient restraining protection their chances of being killed or seriously hurt would have been greatly reduced in slow motion that's what goes on in a frontal crash an event that in reality takes place so fast it's over like that researchers have known for decades that much of the death and serious injury in frontal crashes is needless if the bodies of the people in the crashes are properly restrained that has slowed down more gently and kept from smashing into the car's interior structure they're much less likely to be killed or seriously injured seat belts can do the job but only if they're worn the law requires that new vehicles be equipped with safety belts at the Chrysler Proving Grounds impact tests are conducted under rigidly controlled conditions the results are dramatic proof that seat belts save lives [Music] at only 30 miles per hour without belts we can see through slow motion that the dummy is thrown against the windshield with deadly force at one-fifth true speed we have a sobering view of the sudden action employing the use of the lap belt only we repeat the test results are conclusive protective restraint is gained for the lower portion of the body but the upper body is still thrown forward a speed up in action accentuates the possibility of a serious head injury using both lap and shoulder belts provides remarkably improved results the dummy is fully restrained and protected from contact with both windshield and instrument panel closer to True speed lap and shoulder belts mean added safety a crash if it happens to you will it be this or this or this safety is within easy reach lap and shoulder belts save lives wow crash test footage uh with dummies it's fascinating uh and it's the since they're doing a slow motion it is kind of meditative in a way uh although what is being portrayed is absolutely horrifying um let's see what do we got today we got lots of stuff kind of set up this one I was going to show you this is what where is it um I think I pulled it already uh yeah I was gonna show you care of the infant animal and human had an amazing beginning and then it launched right into a live Human birth so I was like yeah all right we can't really show that um maybe one day maybe one day we'll do a private screening that's not on YouTube and we will show just live birth films or uh all the sex ed films that we have um like people keep asking about doing what's called an AV Geeks after dark show uh that might happen uh in the next couple of months so we'll figure out a way to advertise that and and show it so that it doesn't get streamed but you still get to see it and comment on it okay anyways so the next film we're gonna watch is about um the uh national anthem I think a song of a Nation enjoy [Music] an evening at the keys is always a pleasant one thank you lieutenant hey Francis Francis aren't you Crossing bridges that our government has shown the commission to fight they've allowed the British to burn the White House sack the capital and lay there for afraid your husband is becoming something of a rebelness is Key Well I do wish you wouldn't add his views like that merely being a successful lawyer he feels as few do that Less Talk of non-resistance might save the nation you're right Mrs Cullen I would like to do more than Stand By and Watch The Enemy burn us to the ground now see here Francis what kind of people are aren't we going to fight for what we have our only protection against that Fleet is Fort McHenry and the president orders the men to evacuate the port and run how can I respect a nation that doesn't even bother to fight a strong talk a man out in uniform for that sir I've been refused to commission the president argues that I'm more important attorney than as a man with a gun I don't agree with it I feel you must excuse me Mrs key good evening I'm sorry really our present emergency makes it necessary I quite understand Captain Montrose and I am sorry good evening good evening captain I'm sorry if I've offended you good evening Martha good evening Mrs key good evening Mr key come here foreign stick to your guns come with a party I suggest that Mary Keith sing for it by all means a song from Mary key I'll ask her of course I think she went in the garden I'll call her [Music] well there you are Manny those were left are asking for you they want you to sing I don't understand you Francis not now let's not fall I want to be proud of you I want people to envious but instead yes who can I be proud of you when you rail so against your own country I allow you your opinions you must allow me mine but no of all times when the nation so needs men who are loyal afraid you don't understand me I love my country as much as any man [Music] you couldn't and say the things you do I and myself losing all respect for you consequently for myself you don't mean that I thought you were strong right and so sure that now I realize the man I loved was a changeling so you are turning away from me like the others what else is there have you forgotten we're waiting for your song Mary song an evening of the keys wouldn't be complete without a song from you Mary your most flattering John [Music] too hard to alive [Music] my time it was [Music] [Music] yes darling it was [Music] sorry [Music] I'll go up and look after her don't you father thank you Mrs Collins Times Like These everyone is on edge nerves nerves it's best we call it an evening you'll be feeling better thank you I am sure she'll be all right good night [Applause] [Music] thank you John for what for waiting waiting you knew I want to talk to you between your old friends there's that understanding you don't have to talk unless you want to said this was one of the most beautiful homes he'd ever seen and now you find it empty am I so wrong in My Views John I don't know it's so easy to condemn perhaps we do face defeat but until defeat comes there's always hope I wish I could share your optimism my father was at Valley Forge they thought that was the end too but it wasn't history of times repeats itself when a man is needed to solve a problem that man is found what we need is someone or something to make us feel as one nation one body and that something can't be Everlasting defeat no we're a sorry love a nation without a capital a republic without a president a song without words let's say good evening sir your pardon for calling this hour Mr keep a sergeant I'm Richard West I've come all the way from Woodyard this is Colonel Skinner Mr where's good evening sir Dr William beans has been arrested by the enemy and taken aboard the British Flagship surprise when how did it happen it was in retaliation for his having caused the arrest of disorderly stragglers from the British army his friends have asked me to implore you to intercede with our government for his release of course we'll go immediately Colonel Skinner is the government agent for the exchange of prisoners of Baltimore would be very grateful gentlemen I have a coach outside come along darling we must lose our time I'm ready get your clothes [Music] Mary I'm taking Francis with me to the British Flagship to arrange the release of Dr beans yes I heard will you get in this letter when you reach the vessel no it's not I have no choice you'll do the same do you realize what this means there's nothing left [Music] I must tell Mary I've told her Francis you may find your answer out there out there but how I don't know it's my policy to go into the heart of trouble to find my way out that's a soldier's method hope you're right John come Francis [Music] [Applause] in appreciation of the medical care and Aid rendered our soldiers by Dr beans during the Crown's occupancy of his Marlborough home I am releasing Dr William beans into your custody we thank you Admiral thank you I cannot however permit you to go ashore until after the battle battle surely you don't think we're standing off Fort McHenry with our entire fleet for our pleasure you three gentlemen will be returned to your ship under guard there to remain until the inevitable surrender of Fort McHenry you may enjoy another sample of Yankee stamina take them over the side and back to the vessel attention [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] Cochran is getting a little more Yankee stamina than he bargained for [Music] no Fort can hold out against this bombardment it's Massacre I'm afraid not the thought will likely give up Before Dawn don't forget doctor Americans have a pretty star of determination when they're called upon to show it our flags still be flying over the fort at Sunrise it's too dark to see let us pray that it is our country needs the picture of the morning sun on a plane that won't bow to the enemy [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] light the flag is still there the Star-Spangled Banner our people they must know of this they must never forget this moment I want to tell them have you have you anything I could write upon yes I have a letter it's for you let me have it I'll write on the back of it a song a song that must mean to everyone but the side of that flag means to us oh say can you see [Music] by the dawn's early light what so proudly what so proudly we hailed at the twilights last gleaming whose broad stripes and bright Bright Stars through the perilous fight or the ramparts or the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming and the rockets red flare bombs the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that are flagged was still there oh say does the Spangled Banner yet wave or the land or the land of the free and the home of the Brave [Music] Francis hello John what's this the poem you wrote after you opened your letter I took the envelope and showed it to judge Nicholson the support he rushed it to the office of the Baltimore American publication had stopped all the men were fighting a boy set up the copy and distributed hand bills it was sitted to the tune of Adams and Liberty it swept the City by storm everyone is singing it this is that something we needed to make us feel as one nation it comes but once in a man's life to be able to do that yes but I I've lost Mary John [Music] Francis Mary you you come back yes dear I heard the song you wrote do you think I could have written that if I had no love for my country I've been so wrong Francis that hurt you but how does that hurt has come live greater than any Victory we might have won married Francis they've come to the front lawn hundreds of them they want you to hear your song listen [Applause] now it captures The Gleam of the morning's first game in full Glory reflected now Shines on the Stream it is the Star-Spangled Banner a long may it wave for the land at home of the Brave foreign [Music] some dramatic license taken there uh let's see um so the friend I can't remember his name the shorter guy uh shows up in a film that I have called No for sure which is a venereal disease film uh made in the early 40s I think so I'm gonna try to find it without showing you any uh uh penises um let's see if we can do this it's either accidentally showing you vaginas are accidentally showing your penises but here let's let's find them all right [Music] a group of young men to show them how to protect themselves from Contracting with aerial diseases those are the facts about syphilis and its dangers but while at syphilis get started you can't have syphilis or gonorrhea unless you expose yourself to the germs if you're smart you'll keep away from prostitutes and Pickups most of them have syphilis or gonorrhea they're not safe and they can't be made safe use a rubber he um shows a inadequately accurate uh drawing of a man's torso um wow we're just having the the Bots today aren't we they're super excited about everything that we're watching and uh wants you to talk to their ladies uh anyways um let's learn how to give and take instructions um Bots what do you think about this [Music] [Music] now this is very important whenever you're diluting acid always pour the acid into the water like this never the other way around you're ready to learn the pivot shot now just get your feet in this position and hold the ball about here now if it's a cash order use this form if it's a charge you'll have to check with the credit office for an approval what about cashing checks checks are also handled through the credit office all right girls if you'd like to use the television set you turn it on here and select your channel there instructions it's surprising how often we use instructions how often we're on either the giving or the receiving end of instructions I began thinking about instructions the other day when Jack and I were going over the last minute plans for his class picnic you see I'm advisor to the class and well listen and see oh Jack I'm glad you're here I came early because Barker Jack I want to talk to you before the committee meeting I'll go ahead and handle all the food arraignments as you ask only well I don't know just what to do exactly well I helped out on that last year now what did we do we went around to different stores and asked about the prices and then we bought the food where it was cheapest Jack how did you decide how much to buy how much to buy oh yes Rose there'll be a report today on how many are coming to the picnic good and then when you know how many to plan for you can find out how much you have to get but we have to get hot dogs buns potato chips and then the trimmings Mustard Pickles ketchup that's the idea and when you know how much you want to buy you can go to different stores and get a price in that quantity oh last year we went to several stores yes I began thinking about instructions about how often we have to give and take them about certain skills we need to give and take instructions effectively Jack and Rose didn't have those skills down pat but they were learning them and they were learning two basic elements of instructions a clear plan and effective communication but even as I was thinking that through another little incident occurred that Illustrated the skills of instructions quite well hey Jack did you plan out what you want me to do about the sports equipment well uh yes well here's what you can do first figure out just what to take and how much we'll want bats and balls of course maybe gloves maybe horseshoes then go to the coach for permission to borrow them and then have the stuff right here before 10 Saturday morning we'll have cards ready to take it out to Graham's Woods check oh and the waltz here's a snapshot taken at last year's picnic it'll give you some idea of what to take along thanks dick hey this will really help out Jack gave those instructions skillfully did you see what he did what are those skills of giving instructions first be clear Jack had a clear plan in mind about the job to be done second know the steps in order Jack knew the steps and gave them to Walter in order third use effective methods well it seems to me that Jack's use of the snapshot was a good idea to help Walter See Clearly what he was to do but that wasn't all what about getting the things back I'd better do that too yes yes if you would let's see decide what to take get permission from the coach then bring the stuff here and return it after the picnic anything else no that should do it okay I'll get in touch with you if anything goes wrong okay thanks a lot well hi everybody yes Walter showed some skills too he made sure he understood the job he wants to do he repeated the steps immediately to prevent mistakes and he was set to check his steps in action as he went along you know it's a funny thing when the committee meeting got underway the very first subject that came up had to do with well looks like we're all here I guess we can get started now uh bill you were going to handle transportation for the picnic how's it going along no good nobody wants to drive why surely someone would can and Betty and I'll bet Ralph would drive if you asked him I just did ask him no soap started out interested I thought then well I might be able to get the car where is this place Graham's Woods never heard of it oh it's a swell place for a picnic you'll like it well maybe somebody rides along to show me the way oh I'll tell you how to get there uh you go down Route 46 to 12. and you turn left on 12 and go along for about five or six miles there's a gravel road off to the right when you turn left on another Gravel Road well you can't miss it it's a big wood with a picnic grow I don't know I can just see his ending up miles from this place golden Woods Graham's wood you can find it oh I probably couldn't get the car anyway you can find somebody else man it's been the same way with everybody they don't know the way so they won't take their cars uh do you suppose they'd be more willing to drive if they had clear instructions on how to get there yes could we make your instructions simpler Bill why not use a map well Graham's Woods isn't on the road map I mean we can make maps I guess you go down Route 46 to 12. Mr Barker and I could help you with that after the meeting good I'd appreciate that well now we have several other items on the agenda thanks Jack I think I can work it out now fine all right bill now let's get started on this map good bill I suppose you're clear in your own mind just how to get there yeah sure well then why don't you outline the steps and we'll see if Jack can draw a map as you go boy that'll be the test well you go down Route 46 to 12 which direction North that's right and you turn left on 12 and go along for about five or six miles there's a gravel road off to the right well just exactly where I mean there must be lots of gravel roads around there well um oh there's a Schoolhouse on the corner you'll spot it because it really is a little red schoolhouse turn right at Red School House yeah and you go along that road until you pass a Steel Bridge that's three miles from the highway then about a half a mile past the bridge you turn left and that road goes right in the grand Woods boy if we make maps like that the drivers can't miss Maps or drawings are helpful in giving instructions when you can use them but perhaps you should write the key steps on the maps too yes I'll do that North on 46 left on 12 right at the Red Schoolhouse and left a half mile past the bridge on Bill when you're giving these instructions you might ask some questions just to make sure each driver understands and let the drivers ask questions too that's right then repeat all the steps with the map right at hand and finally uh make sure each of the drivers takes this map with them so we can check instructions as he goes along I will thanks Mr Barker okay thanks Jack yes instructions involve clear planning and effective communication and there are skills for giving and receiving instructions be clear know the steps in order use effective methods repeat immediately check in action [Music] whenever people want to do things together it pays to know how to give instructions and how to take them [Music] thank you back before uh maps on phones um let's draw a map and give it to people um yes and of course Coronet film which means there's a list okay I got a film set up on the uh on the film scanner uh this is the Pussycat that ran away let's hope that this is um free of any uh genitalia all right enjoy foreign hold on hold on um yeah I've already shown this I'm sorry I apologize um let's learn about lands and the Waters of our Earth sorry about that yeah there was another copy that we watched and I this one had not been marked so there you go lands and the Waters of our Earth enjoy [Music] in a quiet spot on the side of a hill Jimmy and his family had a picnic one Sunday afternoon there was soft grass and Big Trees how far away was a river it was a good place for a picnic Jimmy had brought a new book to read after lunch the book was called lands and Waters what do you know about the lands on our world what do you know about the waters the book said on our big round world there are lands and there are Waters the book was about the different kinds of lands and Waters that are on our Earth Jimmy's mother said he could see different kinds of lands and Waters from the top of the hill so wouldn't that be a good place to read the book father said he would go with Jimmy mother said she would stay with Jimmy's sister so off Jimmy went with father to learn about the surface of our Earth from the top of the hill up and up they climbed higher and higher now they were high above mother and sister but they had to go higher finally they reached the top of the hill they could see for many miles around below them was the river Beyond it were Hills away in the distance were mountains although they could see many miles they were seeing only a small part of the Earth's surface if they were in an airplane or a rocket and could go very high above the Earth they could see many more hills and mountains and rivers and if they went High Enough they would see that the Earth is round and that there is more water on the surface of the Earth than land they would see how big the Earth is and how much there is to find out about the lands and Waters on the Earth Jimmy wanted to begin it said in the book Hills are one kind of land there are many kinds of hills from where he sat Jimmy could see different kinds of hills some were not as high as the hill he was on but some hills were very high the hills had round tops and seemed to roll up and down up and down on the next page the book said Hills are high but mountains are higher and that was right the hills that Jimmy could see were high but past the hills were mountains Jimmy's father said these mountains were more than 10 times as high as the hill mountains are the highest kind of land sometimes they reach as high as the clouds because they are so high it is cold near the tops of mountains often their tops are covered with snow even in summer the shapes of some mountains are different from the shapes of most Hills most mountains are rough and steep they are often Rocky and not as smooth as most Hills Jimmy could see that the real mountains were like the picture of mountains in the book on the next page the book said between mountains and Hills we find valleys Jimmy knew this he had just come from a valley his mother and sister were down there now that was a valley between Hills and Jimmy could see valleys between mountains he saw one very big Valley a river ran through it and many farms were there the next page of the book said very wide and flat lands are planes Jimmy could see land that was wide and flat land that didn't roll up and down that wasn't high in Rocky this was a plane there was a river running across it the plane had many farms it was a rich plane so Jimmy had seen some of the kinds of lands in our world hills and mountains valleys and plains but our world is made of more than just land there is water too such is the river down there where did the water in the river come from Jimmy wondered and where was it going Waters that flow are called streams the picture showed a stream in a mountain Jimmy's father said that some streams begin high in the mountains where there is always snow the water comes from melting snow and from rain [Applause] a stream that begins high in the mountains runs down the Mountainside where the slope is steep the stream runs rapidly sometimes it runs slowly too down down the Mountainside it flows along the way the stream meets other streams they join into one and are bigger larger streams are called by a different name Rivers streams meet and form larger streams which are called Rivers so the streams form a river and the river continues flowing along the way the river meets other rivers and they make a new bigger River each New River is bigger than the ones that made it sometimes a river flows into a big deep Place surrounded by land Jimmy's book said when land is all around water the water is called a lake in some Lakes people have fun swimming or riding in small boats people enjoy lakes and take care of them some Lakes overflow and the water runs on making a river again On and On the River Flows now it flows through a valley you often find rivers in valleys then Jimmy could see that the river flowed past the hill where he sat but where was the river going the book said a river keeps running downward sometimes you can hardly tell that it is going downhill but it always is along the way people may be fishing the river keeps growing bigger as it meets other streams and rivers and continues flowing along now the river is wide enough and deep enough for large ships to move upon it carrying people and things from place to place the river has come from little streams that joined into rivers and small rivers that became the Big River and where is all the water going it is flowing into a bay which is part of a much bigger kind of water Jimmy's book said the biggest kinds of water are oceans oceans cover more than half of our world and so the river finally flows into an ocean as Jimmy could see from the map in his book waters are all around the lands of our world when Jimmy had finished his book he had learned a great deal and he wanted to find out many more interesting things about lands and Waters of our Earth alright so let's try this again I've got a film set up on the scanner it has a lot of sprocket damage and they did tape repair on it which means that I have to sit there with my finger and keep it from sticking so here is uh uh Ricky's great adventure and I have not shown this before enjoy [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] and tomorrow that might be a beautiful flower too it doesn't smell how long children let's have our picnic Bobby you lead the way [Music] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] Ricky Ricky where are you Ricky's gone Mrs Jones maybe he's lost he'll get hurt he can't stick [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] where are you with the Frog [Applause] thank you [Applause] Ricky Ricky where are you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] done getting out of here where are you birdie [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh Clark [Music] there you are Ricky you shouldn't have won it off from the group you could have been hurt all right Ricky I've been looking all over for you are you all right I am now look what I found I'm gonna bring it home oh you can't do that Ricky I'm gonna take care of it and I can fit it and everything but it belongs in the nest with its mother do you know where you found it we take it away it could get sick maybe die please Ricky where did you find it take me to the tree and I'll show you [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] there it is up there you're right Ricky your baby will be fine I'll put it back for you no me I'm gonna do it of course let's get back to the others Ricky there is much Beauty in the world if you look for it there's a Wonderful World of Nature for all to discover [Music] [Music] foreign so that uh it finally gave up the ghost um yeah the amount of uh sprocket repair that had been done on that meant that a teacher did not know how to thread a projector and just shredded that film anytime you saw like a green a green line like here that was uh perf uh tape I was trying to fix the the torn perforation uh things which basically meant that the film ran had lost its Loop and it was just kind of just shredding um the perfs uh the story wow that was nuts that you know different type of music that could have been uh a lifetime movie um it really uh spun it kind of like Whimsical and not like oh my God we can't find the blind kid out in the woods um and I guess uh accidentally uh this is where you know Serendipity happens there were three films in a row that talked about picnics uh so I don't know how that happened so maybe you're destined to go on a picnic today uh it's really beautiful here in Raleigh so now would be a good time to get a picnic but uh chances are uh where you are might be super rainy or super cold or whatever but uh I
