[Music] for [Music] fore g k [Music] that's uh so peppy going from a pinata stand to Pata stand with his mouth gaping open um hi I'm skip alimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was another Sigma uh Spanish language film with animation and I think that they are they've never been to a place that makes pinatas I am guessing there is no conveyor belts uh for pinata manufacturing uh it's a bunch of old women and children sitting there doing paper mâché on little stools or on the ground that is my guess uh how AAS are made but uh poor Pepe uh anyways we're watching old 16 millimeter films I hope everybody had a great weekend uh it's gray outside and gross but that's not going to stop us uh that will only embolden us to show you more films uh here's another Sid Davis film uh I've been uh doing some work with the prelinger archive uh kind of uploading new stuff and I found another Sid Davis that I have not shown on here um what do you think is going to go wrong do you think it's going to have voice over narration or do you think they're actually going to talk uh will there be a spinning headline I don't know let's see Big Man on Campus enjoy [Music] this is Jerry Warner and he's in trouble [Music] behind that door a decision is being made an important decision that may affect Jerry's whole [Music] Future Boy I never thought I'd be sitting here like this sure I knew other kids who'd been suspended from school in all the trouble they had but I never thought it' happen to me well so they suspend me so what that's okay too the other kids will still think I'm a pretty big man only it is going to be a lot of bother how come I got into this mess anyway how [Music] come who do they think they are anyway just because they're bigger they think they can tell everybody what to do make me feel like a real Punk so my friends can laugh at me what's the difference if I did run it's a silly rule anyway and I didn't hurt anybody nobody's going to tell me what to [Music] do those two characters made me look pretty silly all right well I'd show everybody what I think of that stuff [Music] well it's not hard to make somebody else look silly either [Music] [Music] I didn't really want to fight that guy I was only clowning but everybody was watching me and I couldn't back out could I they'd think I was chicken mom called the whole thing of storming a teacup after all boys will be boys she said it wasn't as if I'd done anything terrible just a little fight sure the school has a rule against fighting and when you come right down to it I did start the whole thing I guess I was in the wrong but Mom was on my side so what could I lose still I suppose she had to agree to letting them discipline me but one week on the trash detail boy especially in the girl section that was really hum humiliating the other kids are probably laughing their head off and at my [Music] expense and then another lecture just because I got an F in a home assignment well so what it's not the school grades that matter but whether or not you're popular isn't it that's the way to be somebody rather than nobody the most important thing and I'd show him [Music] I'd show him that I was somebody not afraid of anything I'd show him a real stunt I wanted all of them to look up to me not to laugh at me [Music] it was a close call all right and I was scared it really was a dumb thing to do but I had to play it through didn't [Music] I here it comes another lecture someone else to tell me do this and don't do that even after school [Music] the policeman said that I put myself in danger as well as setting a bad [Music] example I got away with it this time with just a warning and I was sure the kids were impressed that I wasn't afraid the kids were impressed all right anyway some of them were I wondered what all the others thought most of them didn't belong to my gang of course they thought that getting good grades and obeying the rules were the things to do sure they'd sometimes watch when I did a stun or something and laugh I'd sometimes wonder if they were laughing with me or at me anyway I was pretty sure my own group even though it was a small one thought I was a big man at Carol she was pretty impressed with me all right she's okay only I wonder if she's really the kind of girl I could go for it may be just that well she's always around she isn't really that good-looking either only kind of flashy and it's certainly true that she isn't very smart I guess the teacher was right when he told her that you can't keep your mouth and your mind open at the same time and Carol certainly does talk a lot in [Music] class maybe the fellows of the gang weren't the greatest but I didn't want to be left out like when the guys wanted to stop and fool around at dins [Music] I knew very well that I was supposed to go straight home from school but I just couldn't refuse I knew I was doing the wrong thing but I guess it was more important to be accepted by the guys than anything [Music] else I was very late getting home all right mom was real angry with me I guess I had it coming mom said I was grounded and had to stay home Saturday and it wasn't any fun to have to tell the kids that I couldn't go with them after all they knew why and I felt I was losing my reputation for being a big [Music] man that's when I got my big idea I really wanted to show him [Music] [Music] well I guess I have a good idea now why I'm sitting here in this fine mess it wasn't just the one thing I'd been wrong in a lot of things I guess I just wasn't too sure of myself but I wanted to belong and so I tried to play the Big Man by showing off and by refusing to listen to anyone with authority most of the other kids were getting along with authority okay and it did seem to pay off for him but everyone has a boss I guess it's about time I learn that too Jerry wanted to be accepted and liked and admired by his friends but all his showing off and Rebellion really just accomplished the opposite in the long run playing the big man he had even placed himself and others in danger and created trouble for his friends but he was hurting no one nearly as much as he was hurting himself well he had called the June now he had to face the music but perhaps it wasn't too late he had been wrong he knew that now perhaps he would get another chance Jerry did get another chance he had taken an honest look at himself and had come up with some good answers if he's smart enough to act upon them then he is taking the first step toward growing up um as somebody pointed out in the comments uh maybe Jerry was trying to prove himself because he spoke with a cartoon Mickey Mouse voice you know he looks uh much older than the voice that uh is narrating for him uh poor kid has has not gone through puberty yet that's why he's acting out uh all right uh thank you Jeremy for donating via the super thanks of one little tree who in the cool of the evening had a dream that carried him from the desert to the mountains and across the land to the Sea [Music] e [Music] [Applause] [Music] of [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] e [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Awakening from his dream the little Joshua remembered the infinite variety of trees that grew in the mountains the valleys and across the land to the Sea now he knew every tree was important and that he added to the color and the beauty of the [Music] desert what um yeah uh okay all right um I'll I'll take that I guess um so that film came from um the academic film Archive of North America and the uh collector SL curator of that archive is Jeff Alexander who over the years had developed a relationship with many of the filmmakers and so they would actually the filmmakers would actually donate their films to the archive and the films that they often received were ones that were never run through a projector and never distributed so uh and often times the color is Krome versus ectac Chrome so there's a lot of films that show up in uh in the archive that are just these pristine beautiful beautiful films now that being said that film it looked like somebody went on vacation and just shot a bunch of footage and then was like what narrative can we do to kind of string this together and uh I don't know if they were successful but it was pretty nonetheless um all right so this one comes from the prelinger archive and this is easily I see this uh footage from this film showing up in documentaries all the time see if you can guess what is the one scene that gets used more than any other scene in this film this film came out in 1957 it is a promotional film for advertisers to advertise in red book magazine and basically what it's doing is it's describing who the target audience for red book is and why advertisers could potentially advertise to them [Music] enjoy the suburbs almost as much written about as Madison Avenue and just as much in need of reflections [Music] like Madison Avenue life in the suburbs has its good moments and others not so good oh no oh discouraged disgruntled heck no they're glad to be here remember [Music] we've got to move and so they join the stream of family life in the suburbs soon to become part of its familiar sights soon to absorb its familiar [Music] sounds anybody home [Music] [Music] these are what red book means by its young adults people in a certain living situation with particular interests and particular [Music] goals these young adults begin to discover Redbook about the time they apply for their marriage license start life in their own homes have their first baby take out their first loan and they stay with Redbook through their busiest years as red book sees them they're an energetic lot a Carefree lot even though so suddenly plunged into family life as the babies start coming they usually decide to concentrate on their houses with a woman staying home to learn new ways to run a household where it soon Dawns on her that she could use a little expert help [Music] while the kids are young many of the mothers try to stay at home which isn't always so easy [Music] [Applause] [Music] either there are times when it's good to have other young adults to talk to but wherever they go there's usually a baby [Applause] nearby and about the time the parents think their children have them hypnotized they give a party and bring the [Music] kids school construction we're talking about that all the time I think that when they build the schools oh no I rather have only big auditoriums in well you don't educate by a [Music] those I always know how my children [Music] behave that's good [Music] oh noing any magazine written for young adults and matching their busy lives is bound to be Lively full of things to talk about varied and warm [Music] [Music] on their own for the first time and determined not to miss a single new homem making idea they're busy just making choices and welcome solid information in concise form it takes a while for a young couple to realize all they're in for or when they buy a house or when they have a baby and when they buy a house and have a [Music] baby so hardly realizing it they come into their purchasing stage and are off on a wild non-stop [Music] ride it's a happy go spending whir reflected in the windows of the Suburban shopping centers where they go to buy [Music] Redbook has been studying shopping centers because the people who created the suburbs are young adults and the shopping centers are built in their [Music] image selling to young adults Demands a new kind of marketing for these young adults the shopping centers have built fountains commissioned statutes put in restaurants and freestanding stairways they've included Banks loan offices rental plans plant nurseries and places to buy building materials the shopping center see these young adults as people whose homes are always in need of expansion people who buy in large quantities and truck it away in their cars it's a big Market to help people find their cars the centers have Enlisted the children they've put in shop mobiles to help them cover the ground they've added Banks of storage lockers miles of checkout counters and endless rows of carts carts rolling down the malls at Southdale at Northland at Gulfgate sunrise and East Point at Hillsdale and California these young adults shopping with the same determination that LED them to the suburbs in the first place are the going as part of a Nation on Wheels living by the automobile the first young adults in the age of the push button [Music] like the rest of life in Suburbia shopping has a family flavor do you remember what size and we bought a tree to go with that's pretty nice shall I take it these busy families make the shopping centers look young and [Music] colorful they have a let's go see quality that brings crowds to community events and promotions for the children whom the young adults have always at hand there's plenty to do and see while his family shops a boy can catch a fish ride the rides go to the circus visit the center zoo and have his hair cut and if that doesn't Tire him out his mother can put him in the center's Nursery School where he can get paint on his shirt see his friends and wear himself out on the bars [Music] since these young adults seem to be able to outlast their children they stash them away at a neighbor's house and go back to the Center for more [Music] This Is The Life young adults lead summed up recently in a single phrase and dramatized by Redbook in major shopping centers all over the country for more than 2 years Redbook had been working with Merchants associations in shopping centers studying young adults when the Easy Living promotion was presented almost every store joined in the first center wide promotion in the history of marketing before red book could develop a successful selling program for young adults it had to get out and see them many different ways it had to get to know them so well that it could become a magazine solely for them what a young adult like from an editor's point of view well they're not so much High brows or low brows as wrinkled brows they're serous and no wonder [Music] to give these serious young adults the substance they want to build a durable relationship with each reader Redbook edits for one person at a time [Music] having established a personal relationship with its readers Redbook then talks to them so that they recognize their own living situations in its pages I wonder whether we could be happy in a place like that when we brought the baby home I thought Billy looked awfully [Music] worried I've got a boy just like him comes home from school always asking questions I remember the first time my daughter asked me about God [Music] they were out on strike for months if that ever happened to us I don't know what my husband would do just as the realities of family life are thoroughly woven into red book so are the realities of community life many young adults come to the suburbs as ex apartment letterers so what about the road the schools will somebody please explain what a bond issue is [Music] writing for young adults read books editors have to keep learning and analyzing without too much Crystal all gazing red books editors have to keep an eye to the Future are you going to the dance tomorrow yeah myew there is a whole new generation coming soon to be young adults a bigger than ever Market of people who have a history of their own who remember all the way back to Eisenhower who probably never saw their mother use a ringer think automobiles are household appliances and have reserved seats on the next rocket to leave the [Music] Earth but right now you can ride along with the Happy Ghost spending Buy It Now young adults of today ride with the young adults who are buying 70% of all homes sold swing into the orbit of more than 2 and A2 million families right now with the only Mass magazine aimed exclusively at young [Music] adults oh yeah so uh there were a couple of shots uh one is both both of them are uh basically a car is driving uh past a bunch of houses in a suburb and it's a a shot from uh the car as it goes past uh there's that and then there's another one with a side view mirror looking back at the people um both of those are used a lot I see them show up all the time when they're talking about the suburbs um and this is was 1957 so we did some math and that means that kids that were born in 1957 are 68 this year so that's want to give you if you want to get some context there um all right so coincidentally I have a film in my collection that's also a red book film but it is made much later uh I would say at least 15 years later uh I think it was made either in the late 60s or early' 70s um this is uh red book is number one for women enjoy this was the beginning of an incredible marketing Revolution out of the rubble of World War II came the baby boom of the 50s and the emergence of the 18-34 market as the prime target of advertisers in in every field [Music] 18-34 is big in numbers big in buying power right now close to 60% of the US population is under 35 18 to 34 is of immense significance to advertisers today will continue to grow in importance in years to come [Music] like most people when I got out of college I didn't know what I wanted to do the one thing I did know was that I wanted my own place my own things that meant a job oh I like my job and what it enables me to do like Furnishing my own apartment I'm getting new drapes and new furniture next week I also get to buy the clothes I like it's funny when I was in school I didn't used to think very much about things like Cosmetics or makeup or clothes I just used to wear blue jeans your basic ski jacket maybe a little eyeliner but now I know how important it is to have the right look my look so I read magazines like like red book and be beautiful to help me do the best with what I've got the future oh I don't think very much about it maybe marriage a career oh I don't know there's lots of options I don't have to make up my mind now after all I'm only 20 one of the nice things about being 20 is the tremendous number of things you need and want and are able to buy that's why 18-34 is so vital to advertisers 18-34 uses 133% more lip gloss than women over 35 73% more blusher they use 400% more frozen dinners by 220% more stereos [Music] [Applause] [Music] I liked working having a job then I met John you know when we were first married we wondered about raising a family now I don't ever remember making a decision but here we are oh it's hard work but I love being a mother I also love running a household I find it very [Music] satisfying naturally 18 to 34 spends more on Children's Apparel more on furniture and toys it's funny we were the first ones of our friends to have a baby and we also had no family in town so we really had nobody to talk to about bringing up children maybe that's why I turned to Red Book and young mother so much you know I may go back to work when little John grows up some I don't know I don't feel like my options are limited I certainly know I'm not they also buy twice as much cookware 240% more life insurance 145% more furniture 125% more washing machines and they drink 38% more wine 50% more vodka 78% more rum [Music] n [Music] [Music] I always wondered what it would be like to turn 30 I dreaded it but you you know what it's really sort of terrific everything seems better what I like best is watching my children turning into people and I've gone back to work so I'm really very busy we're also thinking of moving to a bigger house or maybe refurnishing the one we've got there's a lot going on in my life and you know what red book is as much in touch with the way I am now as it was when I was 20 I may even enjoy it more but that's because I'm interested in so many more things 18-34 big today bigger tomorrow 18 to 34 will increase 15.6% by 1985 biggest growth of any age group 18-34 buys more takes more chances is not brand rigid will will respond to new ideas and the way to reach and sell 18-34 is through the one magazine edited specifically for that market Redbook the magazine for young women 18 to 34 [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] wow 20 years later uh 1977 um fascinating I guess somebody in the comment said that Redbook still exists but it's online only um I think now if it truly is online only um the whole thing about getting people to advertise it doesn't matter because um because of cookies on your browsers um they target ads to whatever your cookie says you're interested in so it doesn't matter you don't have to have someone that advertises specifically um I'm sure they still do I'm I'm sure that there still is sponsorship and things like that and you know I'm sure there's also editorial content which is also basically just glorified advertising for some new product but um fascinating really really
