e I is is is for is is is is in is hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm films and that was some footage of people skiing and then some Dynamite um I don't have a whole lot of information about where that came from I know it was from the National Archives but I don't know the context of why it a shot but you know sometimes you just need some b-roll of people skiing in the 70s uh just like sometimes you need um information about uh Dialing for operators this demonstration will show the procedures and techniques used in dialing the ticket is placed near the dial so that the rooting directions and the call number can be seen readily the operator knows 216 is the code for Cleveland the essential equipment consists of the dial itself the dialing key the dial pilot lamp and the dialing tool let's watch the operator dial a call the dialing key is operated the start dialing signal lights indicating that the dial is associated with the cord payer and that the equipment is ready to receive the impulses that will be dialed into it then the rooting code and the call number are dialed and as soon as the dial returns to normal after the last pull the dialing key is restored let's watch the technique used by the operator the dialing tool is held firmly in the desired opening and perpendicular to the face of the dial a firm contact is maintained until the stop is reached and then the dialing tool should be removed immediately and poised above the next letter or digit to be dialed in some offices the dialing tool is not used let's see the operator dial a call using her index finger first she operates the dialing key in the proper direction the start dialing signal lights and now she dials the rooting code and the called number the dialing key is returned to normal let's watch some calls being dialed for this one to New York Rector 26168 we have trunks in the multiple and the designation strip shows 2 l+ which means we dial re2 6168 the dialing key is operated the start dialing signal lights once started dialing is never interrupted when the dial returns to normal after the last pull the dialing key is restored on this call to Chicago the operator remembers that the rooting directions are 312 plus 2 l+ and that the call is rooted over tandem 1 she takes up a dial tandem trunk operates the dialing key waits for the start dialing signal and then dials 312 mi2 6702 the dialing key is restored on this call to Atlanta the underglass bullet showed the rooting directions to be 404 plus 3 l+ the dialing key is operated and the start dialing signal lights she dials 404 L 6930 and restores the dialing key for this call to Canton the routing directions were found in the multi-card bulletin and since they included more than one three-digit code they were entered on the ticket the dialing key is operated and when the start dialing signal lights she moves the dial rapidly around to the stop for each digit when the dial has returned to normal after the last pull she restores the dialing key this call is to a ring down Point as indicated by the absence of a plus sign after the last code the operator will dial only the rooting codes the call number three 7600 will be passed to the Charleston inward operator when she answers now let's review the procedures and techniques used in dialing the ticket is placed near the dial the dialing key is operated in the proper direction to connect the dial with the cord the start dialing signal then lights indicating to the operator that she may go ahead and dial when the dial returns to normal after dialing the last digit the dial key is restored remember be ready to dial before selecting a trunk dial rapidly and accurately hold the dialing tool perpendicular to the dial make maintain a firm contact until the stop is reached Poise above the next digit to be dialed never interrupt dialing once started these techniques and procedures will save circuit and Equipment time as well as make sure that the call is accurately and rapidly sped on its way there was too much to remember in that um this is where I feel like if someone did a Tonia like song about that for operators um in the style of the 1970s Tonia uh old radios I am looking at you for this challenge um maybe that they would remember better uh cuz that was a lot of information excuse me okay uh next we're going to watch this film about lady Marines and I maybe this I don't know the exact year on this uh I feel like it's post World War II um but it's from the National Archive so you'll see like the beginning uh slate and it's too real so you'll see it kind of say end of recording and then it'll pick up the next one um but this is just fascinating uh what I've watched of it so here's lady Marines enjoy [Music] war is the buk of Naval guns war is a marine dive bomber war is a marine Raider ask the Marine about war or he'll tell you it means attack attack by the paramarine effective deadly attack by Tank Swift decisive attack attack attack That's The Credo of the fighting Marine but today war is a complicated business it takes more than a paramarine a Raider a tank a Motor Squad to win a battle it takes more than planes more than Sharpshooters more than spirit and guts somewhere between the Battlefront and the home front a tremendous machine of administration is in operation 24 hours a day the Herculean task of providing proper transportation for troops of making out reports of classifying and transferring the thousands of new Marines the success of a battle 7,000 mil away depends on these people who sort and file away and punch out millions of paper bullets every day the job of keeping a war machine running efficiently requires the services of thousands of Marines so vital is this job at home that thousands of fighting men despite their intensive and valuable training May Never Smell the Tang of battle something had to be done about it something had to be done about wasting this highly capable Warrior ban and corgador had become Legends wa Island had been branded into history with an indelible iron a marine writes his deer s with a howling machine gun and they're addressed to Japs and Nazis no question something had to be done about it and something was done about it no one doubted the essentiality of the work at home at the same time no one could doubt that a marine who wasn't fighting was a wasted Marine the solution to the riddle was a bombshell the birth of the Marine Corp women's Reserve born February 13th 1943 of necessity the women Marines mushroomed into a sizable force of eager full-fledged reserves who were ready to step into the breach in July camp plun at New River North Carolina became the official training headquarters for women Marines from the plains the mountains the cities have poured a constant stream of women from Compton California from porny City Nebraska from Maryville Missouri from Blasta Massachusetts they've come to do a job we're from Texas too rode on the train four days before we pulled up at camp leun and mind you three of those traveling days were not in Texas the Marine Corps band was there to meet us at the station and that was nice there were also a couple of women Sergeants to meet us and that was well that was nice too somebody said the colonel was there and I was just beginning to wonder and then I saw him that's his dog the Scotty eyes [Music] front I could tell from that first day I was going to like the Marine Corp one thing a marine learns right away is how to stand in line there was a marine driving the bus and I thought one of these days I'll be driving this bus and he can send back postcards from Tokyo and I'll give him my address before he leaves after we got squared away which means to set up housekeeping in the barracks we met the chaplain you know some of us had never been away from home before and well just knowing there was someone you could have a manto man talk with no matter what your religion was well it felt like home that's all some people think a woman consists of a pair of silk stockings in a smile but not the Marine cor they look through you with one of those X-rays and they want to know if you're all there everybody knows the thing a marine likes to do best next to fighting is eating and uh that means have you got good teeth they don't exactly care about the color of your eyes they want to know can you see with them when I left home mom said to look up a doctor for I felt even the least little bitsy well Mom can stop worrying here the doctor looks you up by the time you fingerprinted and you've looked at the [Music] birdie well you don't have to show it to anybody at last after You' begun to think that time will never really come it's it's there the uniform oh God I never thought I'd want to wear the same thing as any other girl but well I almost bold when I put on my first suit of G all the inlisted girls are given $200 allowance for clothing and that means to win a service uniforms hats shoes summer outfits purses a wool lined raincoat that it cost one of you civilians $41 then there's a lot of these and those is and thing ofama jigs you know drop around sometime and I'll let you Ro through my locker the women Marines take a great pride in their appearance and we have our uniforms tailored to fit us which is a little different from the men who have to tailor themselves to fit the uniform some girls never had any special training but the Marine cor has a way of finding out what you can do best and that's where two years of high school or business school come in handy they want to know not only how much you know and how fast you can think of it but also how fast you can learn it my very dear friends this is a GI di government issue drill instructor to you he say something like you [Music] you [Music] you what he's really saying is one 2 three 4 you left two three 4 real much but if he said that everybody could understand him we look something like this our first week you really can't imagine how many left feet you have until you begin to drill you taught how to walk walk all over again underneath he's really a very understanding man did you ever hear of a Marine drill instructor who was a perfect lady then meet Corporal [Music] Winton forward Mar one up reap for your left right left Left Flank March right flank Mark the Marine is not only first to face the enemy he's number one on on the drill field you may wear a rut in the field you may have to resold your shoes a couple of times but you learn to March the Marine Core [Music] way however it's not all Thunder and double time in boot [Music] camp there are times when you get a chance to become acquainted with your mates you smoke a cigarette listen to the other girls talk maybe you tell them about the boyfriend in the Solomon Islands you answer the best gift the folks back home can give you a letter you find out that PA is getting ready for the spring planting Ma's got a blue star up in the window for you your kid brother is going to graduate from grammar school it's a piece of home it's not only permitted it's encouraged after all a girl has to keep up her morale make sure the fingernail polish matches the head cord in color though then suddenly one day it's there the last inspection of your boot like life the colonel and Captain and lieutenants are there everything's got to be ship shaped shoes like a mirror Locker box neat and orderly and your Adams Apple under control you suddenly realize that women in uniform have a great responsibility you're in the spotlight you're not Susie or Mary or Jane anymore you're a marine then it's all over that is all except for one [Music] thing the last review we learned a lot of things about drilling in six weeks you can tell that by the rhythm of the STA you can feel all the heels hit the ground at the same time the music beats out the Cadence nobody calling out left right you don't need that anymore it's hard to remember that little girl who got off the train 6 weeks ago and didn't know her Port leg from a starbard and they know we've got our marching legs on too they can tell we're Marines and good ones by the time you're passing by the reviewing stand your heart is doing nip UPS that's one time you'll never forget your eyes get kind of Misty and you don't know what to do with that lump in your throat maybe you can't see me but I'm down there somewhere a pocket full of Pride and all a boot no more private first class and a full-fledged Marine Saturday in Camp is an American Saturday the girls learn that life does not consist solely of drilling lectures and Military routine they are now permitted to exchange heartbeats with the [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] men the recreation hall is a stomping ground where the only face movements are done cheek to cheek and no sergeants to call Cadence it's an old old story in a new new setting [Music] thorough as is the recruit training so too are the media for recreation the finest equipment is on hand for use once a girl's boot training has been completed a varied and interesting Panorama is spread before her an entire regimental area has been taken over for you by the women the grounds are studded with green Lawns and red brick buildings of permanent structure Barracks mess hall classrooms dispensary motion picture house Post Exchange laundry and tailor shop a well stock library with the choice of the best in ancient and modern [Music] literature well do we know for what we are fighting and here too as in the broader sense we worship as our conscience directs regardless of creed or color or sex far from Home Alone the woman Marine finds extended to her the friendly quietude of church services a fervent prayer for those who have died for those who shall live for our cause and the part we must play in [Music] it up to now the girls have only been getting ready for the job that's to come for in order to better understand the task that lies before them the women Marines are shown the weapons with which their mates are fighting this war they learn from actual demonstration that this is no storybook war of chocolate soldiers it's the real thing just as theirs as a real job a job offering little glory and a great deal of hard work sometimes wearisome work but nevertheless a necessary part of the All-American team and it's teamwork that's going to kick Tokyo for a field goal indoctrination period over and now will be assigned to attend various schools known for efficiency in the field of battle the Marine Corps lives up to its standard in the classroom more than 15 schools teaching scores of subjects are turning out skilled crafts women to take over jobs the school courses range from 4 to 21 weeks and include an intensive period of training which will fit the woman Marine for the sort of work she has chosen the girl often has her choice of subjects which range from accountants to sheet workers to [Music] statisticians for those few who have the necessary qualifications is set aside the distinction of officers candidate School the gold bar of a second Lieutenant weighs but an ounce with it however comes a pound of tradition this is the Highlight in a candidate's life those women who in Civil Life held down specialized positions will be placed in jobs immediately Camp leun boasts of the only post office in the country run completely by women experienced telephone operators are at a premium combat Signal Battalion Marines are needed at the Battlefront where their work is one of the most important cogs in the successful completion of a war task the business of making words move across the face of the continent is waiting for those who have had training or can adapt themselves to this sort of work Marines forly buttoned down to jobs such as these have already been relieved in great numbers their postmark today is somewhere in the South Pacific the fruits from that idea born in February of 1943 begin to rise women who have freedom Marin to fight have given a gift to the Battle For Freedom which cannot be counted in thanks or dollar more than 11,000 men died on armus day in 1918 if by lending their efforts the women of America can end this war one day sooner thousands of homes will welcome back men who might not otherwise return there are scores of jobs in the Marine Corps for women jobs which will permit our fighting man to get their firstest with the mostest jobs that require special skill and jobs that require merely a native intelligence with an eye not only to the war's end but to a world in which women will move into new Fields many marines are receiving a background with which they can carve a place in the America of tomorrow for more than half the members of the women's Reserve will be placed in aviation units before this war a mere dozen or so women had made names for themselves in the field of Aviation a marine record in aviation will mean a passport to the industry of Tomorrow her husband is in Army Aviation they'll talk the same language when it's Farewell to [Music] Arms some women subjected to the war of nerves on the home front the days and nights of tenseness without action have found an outlet in the Marine corpe through active duty aerial photography is an integral part of modern warfare and today women are fast becoming the prime exponents of aerial photography as each woman Marine steps into a job behind the battle lines she presents the Allied cause with the best trained fightingest man and in the world these are the women of America who have picked up the gauntlet knowing full well that women have a stake in the World of Tomorrow the lady Marines are lending a hand in the struggle of today they've joined the service and service means work they go where their sent to perform the job assigned to them smartly efficiently there's no glamour to the job but the reward that comes with the knowledge of a vital all important task well done for them Calico and Lace has been replaced by the proudest Green in existence the official uniform of the Marine Corps women's Reserve this is our country yours and mine this is our war and the Victory too shall be ours here is your new fashion for victory our women Marines [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so Nathan you didn't like that film I wasn't clear um yeah sometimes we Dabble in films like that and uh so not everybody it's not everybody's cup of tea I should say this next film is 100% American propaganda you might think the previous film was American propaganda and it certainly was but this was American propaganda that was made specifically to be shown in other countries uh to espouse the American way of life and this is a interesting kind of uh it's like a in digest uh format so there's news stories and um there were several of these made and these were part of the the US IIA and um these when they were made there was a stipulation in Congress that said that these films were not allowed to be shown in the United States because they might color uh uh American politics in some way so so these they're finally now available and they're showing up more and more so um cuz of the time there was a time length um that they weren't allowed to be shown in the United States so this is called Vision enjoy a [Music] [Applause] [Music] the United States is a nation of many stories these are but a few of them [Music] [Applause] [Music] here on Copper Mountain in Colorado a new breed of winter sportsmen are gathered for a competitive event the formal name of the sport is freestyle skiing but to the initiated and those who are skilled enough to try it it is known as hot dogging [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] there are several categories of competition this is the one they call stunt [Music] ballet the judging is very similar to that of figure skating with emphasis on form Grace and [Music] [Applause] [Music] Innovation perhaps the highlight of any hot dog meat is the aerial acrobatics of the freestyle jumpers the ramps are constructed on the side of a hill and carefully packed down and checked because there is little margin for error in this event the jumpers display a dazzling and dizzying array of twists turns flips and perhaps some flops but the skill coordination and concentration needed to compete here are readily apparent [Music] be me be [Music] [Applause] [Music] hot dog skiing something that is capturing the interest of sports-minded people the world over [Music] all right I got to pause this because that song sounded so familiar to me um here here's where I first heard it but I don't know what we're supposed to be doing just do as I can I bring my pizza p no get rid of [Music] it you got to line up single pile you got to stay back from the road oh yeah you'll never push and never Crow take care man care and not too loud you got to let the big bus stop you got to go right to your seat mhm you never run and Never Shout take care man care until you're out stop stop stop then you can look look look all around think think think when you act end you know you'll be safe now you got to keep your head inside you got to keep your arms in two oh yeah you never fight and never throw take all around think think all right you get you get the the point all right let me uh get back to Vision now already in progress [Music] Thomas Jefferson George Washington the heads of four presidents carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota it is a memorial that millions of people have gazed upon with awe and with [Music] Wonder today only 20 M from Mount Rushmore a 20ft high plaster model stands testimony to the fact that another Memorial is being shaped a memorial to a great Indian warrior and and chief Crazy Horse Crazy Horse is being torn blasted and carved out of Thunderhead mountain and when completed will measure more than four times the size of Mount [Music] Rushmore since 1948 sculptor kak zovsky has labored to make this gigantic dream a reality he has blasted over 4 million tons of rock from the face of the mountain more than 10 times that removed in the entire Mount Rushmore project and he has another 2 million tons to go once the blasting and clearing is completed he will turn to the smoothing and finishing of the monument a task that will reflect his sculptor's art many different materials had felt the touch of his tools before he decided to devote the rest of his life to his Mountain his portraits in Marble won him a claim and added to his reputation as a master woodcarver [Music] the grace and symmetry of his work can be seen in the pieces on display in his South Dakota Studio A bulldozzer has replaced the Chisel a monument is to be carved from a mountain this is the lifetime task that sculptor kop jul kovsky has undertaken yet as ambitious as the project is as enormous as the job before him remains he says of himself I am only a Storyteller I am nothing more the St Paul chamber or Orchestra has come to bismar North Dakota a relatively small Midwestern City because of an idea they call music on the Move simply put this means that rather than waiting for the people to come to the concert hall you take the music to the people wherever they may be this Orchestra is also one of six participating in a nationwide effort supervised by a new york-based organization called affiliate artists under a grant from the Exxon Corporation to develop Young American Musical directors conductor John Dain is part of this program three four right in addition to giving performances themselves they hold clinics give demonstrations and work with local musicians and music students three [Music] four Bas full quarter Don't Be Afraid just because everybody else goes on the trumpet will be with you and the OBO full quarter three 4 that's it good go to glor glor good ask and vibrate if you get off the strings this rehearsal set the tone for their entire stay in bismar for the enthusiasm of both the musicians and the people of a community makes music on the move a very personal experience put now keep the keep the fingers on the key and go deep push push as hard as you can push once you get there nowhere was the personal nature of the program more evident than in the individual clinics held by various Orchestra members clinics that tested their abilities not only as performers but as teachers now keep your wrist even higher and it'll be gorgeous Hallelujah great do do any of you know what a composer is yes what is a composer you think yes a person who um writes music a person who writes music that's right a person when concert Master rald TECO brought his violin into an elementary school classroom the instrument took on life and a new world of sound unfolded before his young admirers and sometimes he will ask for a rough sound like this which also can be an angry sound shouldn't it it's angrier than and then also we can have a a kind of a happier kind of Sound by bouncing the bow [Music] n [Music] I for [Music] [Music] [Music] n [Music] they performed not only as a group but in smaller ensembles and in a wide variety of places [Music] [Applause] perhaps the greatest surprise to their audiences was their repertoire it included not only the 400-year range of classical music not only the sounds that one comes to associate with chamber music but many contemporary pieces and sounds as well [Applause] they have been in Bismark for 3 days they have worked hard and have been rewarded in the only way that has true meaning to the professional they have successfully communicated with their audiences and have been accepted and [Music] enjoyed not too long ago the idea of a driverless cart carrying supplies through Hospital corridors seemed like something out of the 2st century today a host of such vehicles are operating in industry and [Music] institutions here at Harper's Hospital in Detroit Michigan individually prepar trays of food will be delivered to the hospital floors by one of a fleet of 70 automated self-propelled [Music] carts with the twisting of a dial and the pressing of a button the cart is sent on its way to its destination it will travel a direct route along guidewire tracks buried in the floor and its trip will be monitored on a master panel [Music] the cart will not pass many people on its trip as it travels and especially designed tunnels and corridors but it may pass other vehicles carrying food Linens or supplies [Music] each cart is programmed to electronically signal and operate one of its own private elevators [Music] once it reaches the hospital floor its uned automated trip is just about over it is time for humans to take over and guide it through hallways that could be crowded or busy this particular cart is fully refrigerated and once hooked up the food can be left until a patient is ready to [Music] eat when filled with soiled dishes and Trays it will be sent on its way back to the kitchen and then be cleaned and sterilized before it will be ready for its next [Music] [Applause] [Music] mission here in level cross North Carolina population 30 are built some of the finest racing cars in the country they are known as stock cars their bodies will conform in size and shape to production cars but the interiors and the engines are Precision built most of these cars are destined for small local tracks but recently orders have been accepted from Sportsmen of other countries the reputation of this company however stems not from its products but from the man who runs it Richard Petty perhaps the most colorful and certainly the most successful stock car racer the sport has ever seen the Monday before a race is a busy day at Petty Enterprises for a new car must be ready that will withstand the rigors of competition Richard Petty himself is no stranger to garages at age 12 he swept floors in the garage of his father who was the first driver in history to win three Grand National championships a total topped only by Richards [Music] four he graduated to working on the cars and at 21 turned to driving since then he has won over 150 Grand National races more than twice as many as any other [Music] driver but in the days just before a race he is engineer mechanic and the conscience of a small team of men whose lives Center on Richard Petty's car number [Music] 43 this week the race is the Atlanta 500 in Atlanta Georgia a race that will attract almost 60,000 fans last year 46 million people attended motor races in the United States making it the country's second largest spectator sport The Day Before the Race the drivers are trying out their cars making last minute adjustments before qualifying Heats begin the garage area of a racetrack is a busy place for much can be learned about cars and tires that can be put to practical use by the automotive industry but 2 and 1/2 hours before Richard Petty is to attempt to qualify a problem develops with the [Music] engine when crew chief Dale Inman takes out the car's radiator there is no doubt in anyone's mind that the petty crew has suffered a serious setback but there's no time to talk about it the problem is a blown piston and that means there's an engine to change and only 2 hours to do it [Music] when Richard Petty walks onto the track for his time trials few know of the drama that has taken place [Music] [Music] the day of the race begins with a unique church service and the racers [Music] prayer a winner a winner a woman with God you're all WI [Music] [Applause] com [Music] [Music] [Music] once the race has begun there's not much anyone on the crew can do but wait and hope and get ready for the pit stop where precious seconds lost filling the gas tank or changing tires can cost a race [Music] course the race had begun well but it was soon evident that the car was not handling as it should it was clear that this was not to be Richard Petty's day [Music] [Applause] [Music] a a [Music] yeah um pretty great were you expecting Richard Petty to show up um thanks so much for watching today I very much appreciate your eyeballs and um so Nathan contributed and then I I feel really
