foreign foreign hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that uh was some raw footage uh and the can it said outstanding in his field uh and this was a local filmmaker who did a lot of kind of uh work for different clients and this was for NC State um which has a big agricultural uh Department you know it is technically a cow College um and so this was a lot of footage from there a lot of regrettable stuff a lot of stuff that kind of shows what's happening or what happened with uh raising crops uh anyways we watch old 16 and we try not to get in trouble with uh organizations like uh YouTube and Facebook and um I'm slowly getting back on Facebook using a different older account um so we'll see how that goes uh in the meantime Let's uh I know a lot of you were really interested in fractions and you messaged me and sent me money uh for coffee to see more about fractions uh so this film is for you this is uh finding the common denominator enjoy [Music] this class is busy finding common denominators for the example Mrs Clark has helped the students discover ways of doing this Greg doesn't seem to be able to do the work we'll come back to him later but do you know what a common denominator is here are some of the examples that class is working look at this example one-fourth plus two-fourths each fraction has four as a denominator four is called the common denominator and the two fractions are called like fractions you add only like fractions by adding their numerators keeping the denominator the same but let's look at one of these examples one half plus one-fourth these fractions are called unlike fractions because their denominators are different they don't have a common denominator so you must change the fractions to like fractions but Greg can't remember how to do this turning your papers on your way out class dismissed thank you [Music] Greg haven't you finished not yet is something wrong well Mrs Clark I'm not sure you haven't worked any of the examples with the unlike fractions I know I can't remember how to find the common denominator well if you can stay for a few minutes I think we can find out how to do it that'd be fine Mrs Clark I'll be right back use your fraction cutouts while I'm gone all right let's see one half plus one-fourth it shouldn't be too hard to figure out it isn't what who said that I did where are you are you out there now let's not waste time looking for me what's giving you trouble this one half plus one-fourth the denominators are different two and four so if I'm going to add them I have to find a common denominator but I can't remember how to do it what are those cutouts for on your desk oh we use them to help us change fractions how do you do that see each of these cutouts is a fraction of a whole circle one half one fourth one-eighth one-third and one-sixth C well can you change a half to eighths let's see one half equals one two three four four eights can you change a half to fourths half equals one two two fourths say if I change one-half to two-fourths in the example I can add the fractions because they have the same denominator four four is the common denominator you see you've changed the unlike fractions to like fractions two-fourths plus one-fourth equals three-fourths but we discovered something in class about dividing one denominator into another now I remember Mrs Clark was standing right there when she said when you work with unlike fractions ask yourself well the smaller denominator divide into the larger denominator without a remainder if it will the smaller one is a factor of the larger one then the larger denominator can be used as a common denominator [Music] yes that's it and look it works two is a factor of four so I can use 4 for a common denominator when I changed one half to two-fourths I could add the two fractions because I made them like fractions very good now look over there and use your imagination here's the problem for you Greg this piece of material is one third of a square yard in area of this piece of material is 1 6 of a square yard in area how much material do I have altogether how would you write that out as an example one-third Plus 1 6 say that's what I have here to get the answer you have to find the common denominator now let's see is 3 a factor of six yes so I can use six as a common denominator now I have to change one-third to sixths how are you going to do that I'll use the fraction cutouts here is one-third and these are six one-third equals two-sixths 2 6 plus 1 6 equals 3 6 3 6 equals one-half one half now the fraction is in its lowest terms what about my problem Greg how much material do I have exactly one half yard one half square yard Greg thank you [Music] watch and listen carefully now I'm going to give you another imaginary problem Greg I have just measured the amount of paint in these gallon cans this can is half full and this can is one third full if I pour the paint from this can into that one how full will it be one half plus one third oh look here it is in my paper I need a common denominator but I can't use three because 3 is not a factor of 2. and I can't use 2 because 2 is not a factor of 3. so how can I find a common denominator say well those sets of fractions on the board help me let's look at them and see you know that these sets show different ways of writing one-half and one-third all these fractions are equal and all these are equal to your answer to how to add one-half and one-third is right there say it well let's look at the paint cans again let's suppose the paint cans were measuring cups now let's put all the paint in one cup how full is the cup now I guess it's 5 64. but is that right is one-half plus one-third five-sixths I can't tell I'm not working with six but you can work with sixths look at the sets of fractions on the board can you change halves and thirds to sixth oh sure one-half equals three-sixths and one-third equals two-sixths so I can use six for my common denominator notice that 3 times 2 equals six the product of two denominators is always a common denominator for two fractions I see now 3 6 plus 2 6 equals 5 6 so 5 6 is right you have five sixths of a can of paint in that can thank you [Music] now I remember we discovered how to find the common denominator this way too Mrs Clark explained to us what we did like this when you're working with unlike fractions and you can't use the larger denominator for a common denominator look for the smallest number that both denominators will divide into without a remainder this is called the least common denominator [Music] I think I'm beginning to understand it now that's very good Greg oh hi Mr Clark weren't you talking to me oh oh sure do you really understand how to find the common denominator yes I know how to do the work now Mrs Clark it won't take me long to finish fine Greg has made a good beginning in discovering how to find the common denominator he has learned to use the larger denominator as a common denominator if the smaller one will divide into it without a remainder if it won't Greg has learned to look for the smallest number that may be divided by the denominators without a remainder he has also learned that the product of two denominators is always a common denominator for those fractions working with unlike fractions is easy when you know how to find the common denominator isn't it Greg foreign [Music] looking forward to uh when Bloom house remakes this film David Gordon green I think is uh he's working on it and uh in this Greg is essentially haunted by um people uh who were in the school at different points and um there's a lot of jump scares in it and it's it's gonna it's not gonna be the best horror movie made but it's gonna do okay in the box office and we'll probably uh create a new sequel about fractions uh which would be adding fractions um and maybe we'll show that [Laughter] um I get it some math films are just incredibly tedious and they use whatever novelty they can to make it more interesting uh and usually they fail but I I enjoy it nonetheless because it is such you know it's so dry oh my god um I would say that the best film that we've shown about fractions is a weird number uh which I love and I we showed some time ago and I would say even with that film some people were irritated by it so all right so behind me I have uh on the film scanner I have a film set up and this features uh a person we lost as the narrator see if you can figure out who it is enjoy the idea of the wheel is perhaps the greatest single idea mankind has ever had yet nobody knows when the first man rolled the first stone the best guess is that it was during the Stone Age over 20 000 years ago [Music] foreign [Music] at any rate his genius rolled right on into the Golden Age of Greece [Music] the Greeks knew a good thing when they saw it but like anything new there were still a few bugs to iron out [Music] foreign in the Dark Ages a thousand years ago the wheel like every other scientific thing suffered a temporary setback [Applause] [Music] by 1816 Baron Carl Bryce Von saurbron built the first practical two-wheel vehicle to inspect his land foreign [Music] and wood bicycle called a Dandy horse and it weighed more than the baron [Music] as the baron found there were still a few bugs to iron out [Music] then there was the penny farthing and which one might say the bigger they come the Harder They Fall foreign [Music] inventor developed a bicycle made entirely of wood [Music] when you weren't busy pulling splinters out of your fingers you were busy trying to keep the fillings from dropping out of your teeth [Applause] it was affectionately called The Bone Shaker for obvious reasons [Applause] by the early 1900s designers had brought the bicycle into its own [Music] Gears were added and it could now go up the steepest of hills [Music] the addition of brakes made it possible to go down the steepest Hills [Music] the bicycle could now go anywhere almost [Music] there are people in the world always searching for the new the different the better and one of the leading bicycle designers JP banana who had been seeking inspiration for some time suddenly found his answer in pictures of the old penny farthing Miss nomare take a bicycle all right no take a menu a memo about a bicycle the bicycle A Whole New Concept in bicycle yes sir good engineering on this right away I want a big wheel and I want a wheel and I want a big seat comfortable we'll call it the banana seat I had the bars at Rogue I want a steering wheel and a long front forks etc etc etc give it the works [Applause] but Mr banana will anybody be able to ride this thing of course it can be ridden foreign what happened to Mr banana could have been worse not wanting another banana split he decided to get all the bicycle safety literature he could lay his hands on bicyclist safety hand boat he read everything he could find on safe bicycling these are the things he learned stop before Crossing through traffic [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] don't carry people or parcels [Music] be extra careful passing parked cars [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's a good looking bike these are things that you should know and remember to help you the police will arrange a rodeo at your school they will give you life-saving tips on what kind of a bike you should have what equipment it should have on it how you should write it and what laws you should obey for your own protection would you ring your bell for me once please okay very good wanna check your wheel attention now okay fine and your chain is good that's fine they're my cards you have a red reflector on the back that's very good that's a very good looking bicycle don't think that as you get older you get better if you start wrong you'll stay wrong where's your Bell in your life oh don't touch the bike silly it's a bike it's really delicate what is that you want me I could pick this with one finger it's delicate now if you're traveling down the street on your bicycle and you come to a corner and there's a stop sign there what should you do stop and as you're approaching that stop sign what should you do signal a turn good now would you use your hand signal as you start it up to go around the corner well um when you're coming close to the corner I think perhaps maybe a hundred feet or six car Lanes back from the corner this is when you should use your hand signal so that the motor is behind you knows exactly what it is that you want to do now after you've stopped you should take a good look before you proceed on across the intersection as I said or make a right or left turn now there are other places where you must stop we have here on this chart uh a red light good stop with a red light and of course if you're approaching a corner and the yellow light is on what are you going to do slow down and stop that's right because you know that the red light is going to come along any second and here we have a stop sign we talked about that and sometimes with a stop sign we have a red light that is flashing good now we have another place here which is controlled by a sign that's in the shape of a triangle yeah good what color is the yield sign yellow it has a word on it that says yield and what does that mean good and there's another one that I want to point out that's very important and this is where a lot of young boys and girls get into trouble and have accidents and it's when you leave your home and you're coming down your driveway and you come to the edge of the sidewalk what should you do stop always stop and then take a good luck comes right back to a basic safety rule isn't that right do you remember that safety rule that we had that said before you cross the street you should stop and take a good look and when you're riding your bicycle you should stop at the edge of the driveway and take a good look as well foreign [Music] [Music] one of the first things that most people learn on a safe bicycling course is control [Music] this intersection tests traffic sense [Music] unfortunately there is someone at every Rodeo who just can't learn he thinks his own way of doing things is better a good bike rider should be able to handle this Serpentine as easily as a skier can handle a slalom course see how our expert does it [Music] [Music] thank you sure enough sooner or later he'll wind up at that big bicycle rack in the sky and one can only feel sorry for the other people there wind up in that Heavenly bicycle rack yourself remember these safety rules [Music] don't ride a bike you can't control stop before Crossing through traffic [Music] don't carry people or parcels [Music] be extra careful passing parked cars stop and look when leaving your driveway remember there are old bicycle Riders and there are bold bicycle Riders but there are no old bold bicycle Riders [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] um I was a big Jeopardy fan for a little while um and still love to play it whenever I can but I do miss Alex very much and he shows up as a narrator on a lot of uh um educational films that we have that were shot in Canada because he was of course Canadian uh let's see so this film uh we've been last week we scanned a bunch of uh Oregon films including one that got us in trouble hot ice but uh we did some not during the stream uh and did roughly 200 films so we've been posting those to YouTube and you might be getting notifications about them but this one I figured I'd show because it's gotten a lot of attention and it's uh wonderfully um insulting it is career for girls enjoy [Applause] thank you in the high schools private schools and colleges of the United States today there are approximately four million girls who will be going out within the next few years to make careers for themselves [Music] some will find their only career in marriage but by far the most of them will be making their living earning their way for a greater or lesser period of time in a busy and toughly competitive world competition begins with the circus for every really good opening and the girl who wins is usually the girl who knows what she wants to do and has some aptitude for it instead of drifting into the first job that comes along she looks for the kind of work that fits her abilities and the career she has planned [Music] for planning beforehand preferably with the guidance of a good counselor can prevent many a fault start or failure in choosing what you want to do the first and most important thing is to understand yourself what you are good at and what your interests are and how you get along with others if for instance you are the gregarious type if you like to go in for things like cheerleading and promoting school projects you'd probably be good at some job that calls for you to deal with the public and use your persuasive Powers as in selling if you get good marks in science and are willing to prepare yourself for it your field may be medicine nor chemistry if you like Social Service organizing Aid helping others out you might make a good nurse or social worker if you're a good Craftsman you would do well at work like upholstering or dressmaking or in factory jobs requiring dexterity if you're musical but not enough so to be a professional performer you might try choir directing teaching music or working in a music store a dazzling Hollywood career as a star of the movies is the one time or another a career as Cover Girl one of those fashion models whose faces and figures ornament the nation's magazines is almost as highly prized but jobs like these are Out Of Reach of most girls and in any case are by no means as glamorous as they look modeling for instance is hard work employment is extremely irregular and pay averages low probably not more than a tiny percentage of all models in the United States make a good living when it comes right down to starting a career the wise girl chooses a job romantic or not but fits her abilities interests and personality the biggest single field in which women find employment is officework where there is room for both skilled and unskilled help in general enough skill for most clerical jobs can be acquired either at high school or in some secretarial School for many other office jobs whatever training is essential can be acquired on the spot [Music] interesting and well-paid positions like that of confidential secretary to some important person go only to girls with exceptional ability and experience for those who make good in them such jobs can lead to Top Flight executive positions of which more and more are being held down by women these days another field which offers innumerable opportunities for girls bent on a career is retailing selling in department stores and specialty shops everywhere is largely done by women to those who like meeting and talking with people selling jobs can be both interesting and remunerative for many stores pay Commissions in addition to a regular salary but retailing offers many other kinds of careers besides selling there are various specialized jobs some big stores for example maintain Laboratories for testing the goods they sell here there are opportunities for girls with scientific interests those who enjoy research and Analysis some of the bigger retail stores also make a practice of taking in apprentices and putting them through a course of training and a series of jobs in order to give them a firm grounding from more responsible positions if they are capable of making the grade [Music] one of the jobs such beginners often start in is comparison shopping in cities where competition among the big stores is sharpest the comparison Shopper is sent out to scout rival stores in the guise of a customer to find out whether they are offering better values on similar articles of merchandise than the home store jobs like this may not be the kind you want to end up in but they're good to begin in because they give you a chance to absorb rapidly a great deal of useful knowledge about merchandise and Merchandising methods and from them you can move on to any number of other and better jobs one of the more desirable positions in retailing is that of buyer buyers hold highly responsible jobs and get paid accordingly well the success of the store may depend greatly on the degree of taste and judgment and foresight they exercise to be a buyer takes a lot of qualifications a thorough knowledge of merchandising and sound judgment plus the ability to anticipate the Public's changing taste women who are successful in the merchandising field sometimes Embark upon independent Ventures as for instance Mary Lewis whose career led her to a Smart establishment of her own on Fifth Avenue field which has grown spectacularly in recent years is the beauty business which in some of its aspects is almost a monopoly of women such skills as are necessary for working in the average beauty shop can be acquired in a short course of training the chances of a woman who is willing to work hard being able to start her own business are even better here than in retailing fortunes have been made in the beauty industry by Helena Rubinstein Elizabeth Arden and others whose Deluxe establishments are chiefly showcases for the products of their big factories field in which opportunities and rewards for women are probably greatest is fashion a predominantly feminine industry here as in any field where the competition is stiff it is worth finding out what training is required for the career you want and going after it the choice of careers in fashion is wide buying and selling designing manufacturing promotion and display and many others there is money to be made in all these if you've got a good business sense combined with style sense though competition is particularly Keen for the better paid jobs for anyone who has Ambitions to start out on our own it is a risky industry particularly in The Limited field of creative fashion designers as successful as Valentina couturier to many eminent women of the Opera the theater and Society are a small and enviable band fashion can be a springboard to other professions too such as journalism here again competition is intense and in any branch of Journalism a college education is usually a prerequisite there is a big group of successful magazines written for and largely by women which greatly attract career girls this whole field is even more overcrowded than fashion but anyone who can make the grade will find a choice of interesting jobs ranging from production and editorial assistance to Art editors layout artists copy editors and writers it's a tough field to break into but once in there is almost no limit to where you can go as witnessed the careers of two of the nation's top editors Carmel snow of Harper's Bazaar and Edna woman Chase evolve public relations publicity and promotion are Allied occupations opening up to women thanks to the success of publicists like Eleanor Lambert and others who have made a name in this field to make good you need among other things imagination and diplomacy a broad knowledge of current affairs and a personality at its best when you're meeting people to a lesser degree these same requirements pertain to many jobs in the field of Transportation Airlines particularly offer opportunities for women if you want stimulating work with a touch of adventurousness in it you might apply for a job as a plane stewardess for this you need some college education nor preferably training as a nurse if you're the kind of person who enjoys giving help to others there are many jobs for you like teaching for instance whose greatest rewards are the inward satisfaction of doing work you love the esteem of your community and the companionship of the young if you like children and are in a position to take the necessary training you will enjoy such relatively new but increasingly important work as that of child psychologist and what burns no you mustn't come here Fire and Put cuts nice nice people and put sleeps sleepy hands sleepy heads and what scratches sleep we had that's great and now what flies the nation's hospitals are constantly in need of personnel of all kinds though there are a few positions such as receptionists which have no specialized requirements most of those who are employed in hospital work have to undergo exacting preparation in advance for the jobs they hold nurses have to go through three stiff years of training and practical experience for upon the work they do human life constantly depends nursing is not easy but it offers great opportunity to serve the public and those who practice it take great pride and satisfaction in their profession if your interest is more in science than in people there are other jobs laboratory technicians for example or if you are prepared to undertake the years of training necessary to become a doctor you might specialize in some field like pathology women doctors are no longer a rarity and many of them such as meroneer Farnum occupy places at the top of their profession today this and practically all the other professions are wide open to women first woman member of the Federal Communications Commission is an example of women who have been successful as lawyers [Music] Lisa meitner famed Atomic scientist is one of a much smaller number of women who have one distinction as physicists a profession that continues to attract women in great numbers despite all warnings and discouragements is acting what a beautiful face pull it no it's Garland uh although it's a lovely little baby and the uh it's to be the future Queen Elizabeth still uh what the king wanted more than anything else in the world was his son and so it's a tragedy to these people so the lion should carry a undercurrent of deep tragedy I see not one girl in a hundred who cries the stage ever makes a really successful career of it like acting a career as a concert or operatic artist is only for the girl who was willing to gamble everything on the outside chance that all her hard work and talent will pay off [Music] the number of women who have made a name and a living for themselves by their art such as moral limpiny noted British pianist is necessarily small foreign [Music] despite all difficulties when some person of great talent comes along like Marion Anderson the rewards of success may be enormous [Music] oh [Music] please [Music] from the rarely talented to the most ordinary every girl in choosing a career can find within herself abilities that might fit her for a number of occupations her chances of success are likely to be greatly increased if with the proper guidance it concentrates on the career for which she is best suited and in which she can get the training necessary to take advantage of every opportunity [Music] [Applause] foreign thank you foreign okay stop hey look up uh so I haven't shown that film for like two and a half years um but I'd like to show it whenever I can this film I mean besides the fact that the title has been uh has a different meaning now um with different pronunciation or uh punctuation the I don't know man just something about this the feelings of an angst-filled kid but really an angst-filled person where you're just miserable with yourself and you try to contribute or you try to join a community and they kind of rebuff you into what you do instead of leave is you you just wreck everything man you want to talk about summing up socio-political uh stuff nowadays is it really just the it's like if I can't have it my way I'm just gonna destroy it um yeah so anyways there's there's my soapbox my weird obtuse soapbox and why one of the reasons I still show and watch old films is that they change over a period of time uh as I watch them as I grow older and as we uh March forward uh so that last film prior to that was career for girls which was a March of time uh kind of newsreel type of thing that they would show in theaters uh but also there was educational market for it um and that one had a female narrator because it was aimed towards women or girls um which I guess women were called girls until they got married um anyways thanks Jeremy for the donation you can hit a super thanks thing
