foreign uh so that is a uh this is why we like watching home movies uh and this came from the Oregon archive uh on the can it was written 1965 Hobbit adaptation and um it we later discovered it was 1971. we were hoping it was 1965 because then that would be the first ever film adaptation of The Hobbit um there was one that came out in 66 uh it was a short animated short by Gene deich but or deach um but no 71. anyways these kids also did a True Grit adaptation and so uh we'll try to get that on next week what oh crap all right so um hold on let me get let me deal with this uh so this morning I woke up to uh the fact that um my Facebook account has been disabled um and they you click on it and it says you've violated our terms of service but they don't you basically click on that and then it just lists like five reasons uh that you might have been turned down of which one of course is somebody else's intellectual property and that's what I'm assuming happened given what's going on when we do these streaming shows but of course they don't tell me they don't tell me specifically what it is and so there's the times that I've been suspended for a couple of days were because and they never at one any point told me this is the offending video this is the offending part of the video none of that so I've tried to appeal but we'll see it's up to them uh and it might be a turning point for me at uh with Facebook it might be like all right we're done uh very very frustrating way basically ruined my morning uh but this Hobbit adaptation awesome and somebody said is this a class project maybe potentially um but uh yeah we love love stuff like this we you know what we also like doing is uh let me see if this is the case alone second is uh brushing up on multiplication enjoy no no no no no no no no no no no no no no Fred [Music] are you having some trouble let's see you've been multiplying the same two numbers and each time arrived at a different answer I think you need some brushing up on multiplication do you want me to help you all right let's begin with what you know suppose an automobile is traveling along a highway at a steady speed of 65 miles per hour in three hours how far will the automobile have traveled there are two ways to find the total number of miles one way would be to add the three equal add-ins 65. 65 Plus 65. a shorter way to find the sum of three equal addends is to multiply this tells the size of each equal addend do you remember what this part is called multiple can that's right and what is this part called it tells how many equal add-ins the multiplier and what is the answer called in multiplication yes the product do you know what you really do when you multiply well let's look at this example again let's think of place value when you say three times five is fifteen you write 5 in the ones place and carry one but what you really mean is this three ones times five ones equals fifteen ones or 110 and 5 ones you put down the five ones and the 110 you keep in your mind are you thinking with me Fred fine let's go on when you say three times six is eighteen and one is nineteen what you really mean is this three ones times six tens is eighteen tens or one hundred and eight tens and you add the 110 you remembered to give you nine tens so the product is one hundred nine tens and five ones 195. now let's see how you multiply when you have a two Place multiplier suppose this is the example 33 times 65. let's remember place value and this time we'll need thousands when you multiply 65 or six tens and five ones by three ones you know the product is one ten and five ones and one hundred and eight tens now to multiply sixty-five by three tens you think three tens five ones is fifteen tens or 100 and 5 tens three tens times six tens is eighteen hundreds or one thousand and eight hundredths of course you don't write it out this long way but usually carry these ones in your head and write the partial products like this the short way so we have two partial products 195 and 195 tens really one thousand nine hundreds and five tens or one thousand nine hundred fifty but you can leave off the zero because the second partial product is indented this puts the five in the tens place now to find the total product you add the partial products the product is two thousand one hundred forty five now let's see the problem you're trying to solve you've been delivering newspapers for nearly a year you've delivered 260 papers a day for 219 days and you want to know how many papers in all you have delivered write out your example again now go ahead with the multiplication nine times zero is no it isn't nine it's zero it's easy to see why here is a bag with some marbles in it but now there are no marbles or zero marbles in the bag here are nine bags of zero marbles how many marbles in all nine times zero is still zero do you see any number times zero is zero now let's go on with the example nine times six is 45 that isn't correct you aren't too sure of the multiplication facts are you you will have to learn and think quickly all the multiplication facts if you want to multiply well now let's go on nine sixes or nine times six tens is right 54 tens nine times two hundreds is eighteen hundreds wait a minute look nine times six tens is 54 tens you put down four but you forgot to carry the five hundreds let's try it again nine times two is eighteen plus five is twenty three really twenty three hundreds or two thousands and three hundreds now let's find the second partial product 110 times 0 is no terms that's right but you've put the zero in the wrong place you forgot to indent when you multiply by tens you mark the first figure of the partial product in the tens place now go on 110 times six tens equals six hundredths 110 times two hundreds equals two thousands fine now go ahead two hundreds times zero ones equals zero hundreds and you placed the zero in the hundreds place very good two hundreds times six tens equals twelve thousands or one ten thousand and two thousands two hundreds times two hundreds equals four ten thousands plus one equals five ten thousands and now the total product so you've delivered fifty six thousand nine hundred forty papers so far how can you be sure this is the correct answer well one way is to repeat the operation but I'll show you another method you can check your multiplication of 260 by 219 by reversing the multiplicand and the multiplier if you've multiplied correctly the product of 260 times 219 will be the same as the product of 219 times 260. the two products are the same so the answer checks Fred has learned how to overcome his troubles in multiplication but what about you does your multiplication need brushing up Why not start now [Music] this up with um brushing up on division but we'll save that for another day we don't want to get all the good out at the same time um so behind me the film scanner and we have a film set up and this is a Methodist film um so enjoy hold it thank you [Music] you brought all the papers everyone going up to lawyerland that's what they call it attorneys always like to get as close to Heaven as possible is it a car failure no I don't think so everybody made his will that's not very funny hello hello yes this is Jim Reeves we're stuck in one of the elevators six people how long yes okay thank you it's not the power it's something with the cable they're not sure what but they man said they should have it fixed soon how soon he didn't say I'm sure it's nothing serious perhaps we should introduce ourselves I'm Jim Reeves this is my wife Margaret my name is Grace Williams and I'm pleased to meet you well I'm happy to meet all of you too I just wish it were somewhere else my name is Armando Ramirez and this is my wife Rita hi I'm Bill Forbes I'm supposed to repair an adding machine in one of the offices just making sure they don't overcharge you folks uh sorry about that joke about making your will bad joke I don't believe in Wills anyway unless you're Howard Hughes now he needed a will I think everyone should make a will I agree about a month ago I would agree with Mr Forbes here but not anymore oh yeah what changed your mind oh I'm sorry it's none of my business no that's all right I'll tell you it might help to pass the time away it was about a month ago Rita and I were at home we had just finished dinner hello I can't understand you the call was from a teenager who was babysitting over at the home of Frank and Gail Mason two of our closest friends the girl was hysterical crying sobby Rita had to ask her twice to repeat herself [Music] Frank and Gail we killed in a car accident our first concern was for their children Karen age five and Frankie who was three decided not to wake them we went downstairs and started doing the dishes it seemed important to do something we couldn't just sit there I made arrangements for our neighbors to take care of our own kids it was going to be a long night [Music] Frank and I had gone to school together we stayed close buddies after we both got married Rita and Gail hit it off real well and how they loved those kids [Music] how's Mike he's all right how's Armando fine did you have a good trip yes very quiet it's fine how are Karen and Frankie oh they're fine I brought them over to our house this morning Gail's sister Joan flew in the next morning we'd called her the night before with the news she and Gail had been very close but she was holding up well considering the shock all right yes I'm all right really I tried reaching Anna last night but they were in Las Vegas somewhere the woman taking care of Jeffrey didn't even know where they were I left a message Anna was another sister but she wasn't close to either Gail or Joan we had never met her I doubt she'd ever been to Gail's home even though she lived only a few miles away she and her husband were quite wealthy [Music] at least the kids were going to have someone who really loved them [Music] foreign the day after the funeral we drove over to Frank's house the will was to be read and Joan had asked us to be there yes she said she'd be here at three is something wrong oh no and I think she should have the children but that's ridiculous we all know Gail would have wanted you to take care of them I mean Anna hardly knows them does she she sends them expensive gifts at Christmas but I don't think she's seen Karen for years but I don't think she's ever seen Frankie then why would she want to be their Guardian you're like this do you understand this situation from from someone I and as a take charge person she tends to intimidate or at least she tries to Gail wouldn't let her get away with it that's one of the reasons that they seldom saw one another Anna feels that she is the only competent person to bring up a child or to run a household or you name it she feels I'm a bit disorganized well she could be right there but I love Karen and Frankie and I think they'd be much better off with Mike and me and they do get along very well with our kids does she have any children of her own a boy Jeffrey he's 10 a very nice boy but he's left alone so much that's one of the things that bothers me on the four or five occasions I've tried to call her over the past two years I've only found her home once Jeffries left alone for weeks at a time with a housekeeper and sometimes like the other night when I tried to call the house the woman didn't even know where Anna was she's always in Las Vegas or New York or flying off to Paris for a business weekend with her husband well I don't think you have to worry I mean she can't march right in and take the children she could go to court for them and she's got a lot more money than I do she wouldn't do that you don't know Anna [Music] hello whose car is that in the driveway I don't like discussing Family Matters in front of strangers Armando and Rita are not strangers they were Frank and Gail's best friends I think we should wait outside no please stay very well I'll put it bluntly I think Gail's children would be better off with me I have two children and a small house I don't mean to hurt your feelings Joan I know Mike has a good job but you do have limited means now I have just one child and the other children would be wonderful company for him plus we have a large house and a housekeeper who's there at all times we can provide for Gail's children better in every way forgive me butting in Frank and I were very active in the church together and I know that he and Gail will be very concerned about their children's religious education my husband and I don't attend church and Jeffrey has never been inside a church in his life my main concern is for the material well-being of the children and I think any judge would agree that that is a priority do hereby declare this my last will and testament first I hereby revoke all four the will was brief some personal items were divided between Joan and Anna Frank had no living relatives the bulk of their small estate was to be used for the care and education of the children and the remainder was left to their Church the attorney reminded them that the estate would probably be substantially increased upon settlement of accidental death claims mine is a minor at the time of my death I hereby nominate Michael and Joan Randall either but the most important provision came last guardianship of the two children was unequivocally given to Joan and her husband any person named herein to act as guardian you realize that there had not been a will Frank and Gail's kids would very likely be living with Anna right now do you realize that we've been talking about making a will for two years and we still haven't done it you're right that's why we're in our way to see an attorney to make a will I agree if you got kids it's a good idea to make sure who's going to take care of them something happens but take my wife and me we don't have anyone if I go first we have joint ownership of everything she'd be taken care of joint ownership doesn't take the place of a will it doesn't there are a lot of things about wills people don't know I never realized how important they could be to recently and that's why I'm here now to sign a will for myself Ed my husband and I had been married very happily for many years he'd always been a gentleman and a generous one but in recent years it changed he had become short-tempered hostile well there's no other word for it a miser he questioned every penny I spent on housekeeping I'm not going to give them any more of my money this particular night he was upset over our tithe to the church since he had decided not to attend church anymore we were to pay no further tithe it made no sense he was a successful businessman and to make matters more bizarre he began to Lavish attention on our son and daughter as though money was of no concern I could see my children being corrupted before my eyes you're gonna love it you're gonna love it he bought Pat our daughter a new car considering that she was married and quite comfortable this was absurd I know you're gonna left that's your favorite color oh dab now go on look at that burgundy watch this bill from the auto Center oh I had to have my car tuned up it was way over too and what do you know about cars anyway you just had it tuned up a month ago and no I didn't it's been over six months well I'm not gonna pay it well son hears that check mark who was a junior executive in his father's company had only to ask and his father gave occasional small gifts I would not have minded but Ed was extravagant they both accepted money gifts even though they knew how things were at home well I had to fight for every penny he gave Mark a vote for his birthday I thought seriously of divorce my pastor offered to speak to Ed but Ed refused to see him so you went to see him behind my back and I didn't do anything behind your back he's my pastor I needed counsel oh you did did you well I'll give you some counsel I'm going to change my will what do you think of that you do whatever you want to do no matter what I think you're so right mark I thought you might like to know I'm changing my will in favor of you and Pat yes your mother knows she's right here I just told her right say son I've got two tickets for the ball game tonight wanna come good no I'll pick you up at seven right about a month later it collapsed in his office [Music] apparently it had happened once before it was a brain tumor it was only a matter of time I made the decision that I would care for him at home rather than leaving him in the hospital I don't think he knew me or where he was but he seemed to be grateful for the attention [Music] I Edward James Williams a resident of the County of Los Angeles State of California being of sound and disposing mind and memory and not acting under Menace fraud or undue influence of any person whomsoever do hereby declare this my last will and testament it had in fact never changed his will Grace Ellen Williams it was quite lengthy mostly full of legal language that meant nothing to me but the main point was quite clear and surprising Ed had left everything to me in witness where all I have here untoed subscribed poor air had been ill for some time and he could not control the violent moods that came over him if only I had known the day before he collapsed in his office he had written a letter to be included in this will Grace you are the best wife a man ever had and you deserve someone better than me I do not seem able to tell you how I feel anymore I know I'm sick but I don't want to make excuses I'm also stubborn and full of Pride I only pray that you and the good Lord will forgive me [Music] Pat and I have discussed this mother and we both agree that the best thing for you to do would be to come and live with us six months with me and six was Pat we don't like to think of you being alone mama well thank you for the offer but I will live alone your lifestyles are too different I've decided to make a will there will be a trust for my grandchildren and the balance of my estate goes to the church and I hope that after a while maybe we can be a family again I spoke to my pastor and he advised me to see an attorney for the proper legal advice we're going to free the cables now there may be some movement of the elevator would you all take a sitting position please and don't worry everything will be fine foreign don't say that are you sure you need a will if you have joint ownership with your wife no matter what your situation you need a will believe me a will is a foundation of all good estate planning laughs is that uh I mean are you going to sign a will my wife and I are each making Wills it's something we should have done a long time ago it is extraordinary how many otherwise prudent men and women have not made a will or inquired as to what options may be open to them in estate planning Margaret and I had simply assumed that joint ownership would take care of things but recently we attended a church-sponsored seminar on Wills Financial we learned a lot believe me I think we can sum up motivation for a will in one word responsibility responsibility is good stewards stewards of the resources with which God has blessed us responsibility to our family as it pertains to those resources financial and otherwise responsibility to the church to ensure that some portion of our resources are set aside for the church's Ministries at home and abroad Christian Education Health and Welfare of our fellow men spreading the gospel the results of exercising such responsibility are many peace of mind the knowledge that we have done our best for our family and our church unless you make the decision concerning the disposition of your estate the Court's will I don't want any Court to decide what happens to my estate I'm not Howard Hughes but my house my car my insurance my bank account is all I have all that Margaret has and we want to decide what will happen to them and the attorney told you what to do not really we spent quite a little time with an estate planner working out the details we've made sure that each of us will be taken care of and some of our estate will go to the church and its related Ministries our attorney is advising us of the legal aspects foreign if I get out when I get out of here I guess I'll stop and talk to one of the attorneys upstairs I guess it's time to make a will the best time is before you get on an elevator growing up [Music] thank you Lord [Music] thank you [Music] beginning of the film it was the Methodist stewardship a group and stewardship of course is all about supporting the church financially and so I'm guessing that this was probably a we're going to have a information seminar about uh how to draw up your will and then one of the things that they would say is like and you can support your church uh just like the woman did she's like I'm going to give a portion of my money to the church and my grandkids but not you lousy kids of mine um yeah interesting stuff all right so uh uh I don't think I've shown this but this was something that was shown uh to the Army and Navy uh it was a I don't know if it was monthly um but it was something that was kind of building morale but also giving information and you know it's straight up propaganda in some regards but it's a kind of a mixture of a couple of news stories and a private snafu cartoon so this is the Army Navy screen magazine number 17. enjoy [Music] thank you Germany could occupy all of France Germany could imprison French soldiers and enforce French labor but she could not seize the Navy of the country she had defeated Frenchmen thought of that when they scuttled their battleships on the day the Germans tried to seize them in the harbor at too long and all of the Navy was not that too long the battleship rishlu 35 000 ton Pride of the French had been crippled in combat while firing on the British under orders from vicious [Music] and sailed to New York the join in the war against Fascism and to carry on the fight of her sister ship lying at the bottom of Tula Harbor after several months at a sacred American Dry Dock the rich low was reconditioned it was the first step towards the Victorious homecoming these men dream about they haven't seen France for four years [Music] but they can play the songs they remember and talk with their Padre about home these Sailors had been helplessly beached at Dakar for two years watching Ruff the neglect destroy their ship now they're ready to get back into the fight again some of these Sailors are mates of the men who went down on their ships for too long some of them are Sons or brothers of soldiers who were killed or captured by the Germans in 1939. all of them were Frenchmen and a battleship with a fighting crew a speed of 32 knots and a battery of 15-inch guns speaks the kind of fighting French Germans understand while the reconditioned rishulu sails back to a combat zone native troops from the French possession of Martinique are trained in American methods of warfare in a camp in New Jersey [Music] their language is different but the equipment is the same as issued to American soldiers these troops are famous fighters and in the United States they learn the organization and teamwork of modern infantry and the use of modern weapons they make tough soldiers and welcome alive and they'll fight until they can help carry the French flag back into France [Music] [Music] and a port in the United States French Airmen arrived from Africa the war is four years old for them and Equipment has changed since their days of combat before the fall of France they come to America to learn the use of new equipment an aerial Gunnery school in Florida is their destination they already know about strafing hi fella where'd you come from I came from North Africa where's your home since 19 points did you run up against any Nazis yes I left Paris one day before the German captured we walk in a road and one German playing Strikers I was lucky but uh 42 others were killed these men had to fight for a chance to fight they had the risk of death sentence and escaping they had to kill German guards across the borders of their occupied country the guns they're training with now are a great improvement over the guns that were lost at the fall of France this time they have plenty of ammunition they knew the character of the enemy long before they entered Gunnery School on graduation day Americans and Frenchmen get their wings together two flags two peoples fighting side by side on the American side there's Alex Bishop his family lives in North Carolina they know he's getting his wings today and they're Mighty proud [Music] Andrei shavanaugh's family live in France in a town called rochevor they don't know that he's getting his wings today Henry doesn't know if his family is living or dead and he never will know until he and Bishop and millions of others have forced the fascists to unconditional surrender foreign captured the steaming jungles and large plantations of the Far East they opened up a serious problem for it was here that thousands of natives tapped cured and processed rubber for the United Nations the United States received 97 percent of its Supply from this area immediately the country faced one of its greatest industrial crises a substitute had to be found for natural rubber flying Corpus needs half a ton every tank almost a ton a battleship 75 tons it was a synthetic rubber process or lose the war the battle for rubber was on today two years later that battle is being waged victoriously a formula was discovered and giant plants was speedily erected to make synthetic rubber including this one at Louisville Kentucky all processes are secret of course but most chemists know that synthetic rubber can be made out of almost anything from dandelions to corn this plant uses corn and it's figured about two bushels of corn to make one rubber tire a highly important factor in rubber is its tensile strength synthetic rubber has a number of advantages over natural rubber note the few workers in these scenes a native if he's good collects a single ton of natural rubber in a year here each worker turns out 60 times annually ten thousand workers in the United States are equivalent to a million natives in the Far East a rubber tree can produce only one kind while a synthetic rubber plant makes many kinds for all purposes as for strength and durability the latest synthetic processes perfected by the nation's top chemists are better than any before found for natural rubber not that the battle has been an easy one the government invested 750 million dollars to build this industry and it was 11 months before our first factory was churning out synthetic rubber after the rubber goes through these huge oven dryers where all moisture is removed it is folded and then plied [Music] finally it's weighed in 75 pound stacks and then dusted with soapstone so it won't deteriorate during shipment to other plants today practically all the synthetic rubber made is being used for War equipment the Army needs it for tires and tires are needed for Jeeps tanks half track carriers and planes the Army also needs it for the barrage balloon it is used for lifeboats by the Navy and for rubber boots the Navy has converted 60 percent of its screwed rubber requirements to synthetic rubber including this latest model life belt and here we have a neatly packed one-man Lifeboat ready for any emergency quickly and with a minimum of effort the Lifeboat is automatically inflated yes Tojo has the rubber plantations and his soldiers are wearing shoes with rubber heels two inches thick but thanks to American Ingenuity and Imagination the United States is going to have enough rubber for its urgent wartime needs and this is a synthetic rubber life vest better known among the many sailors and aviators who have used it as a May West back home the kids still start planning for Christmas sometime around Thanksgiving maybe the delivery truck has something for them maybe not War has made a difference in Christmas to the kids don't worry John it's nothing for you it might be no John this is gonna be a small Christmas I look through the Flies this last night there were only two packages
