foreign foreign foreign all right hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer and it seems a little dark hold on what's going on all right hey welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we show old 16 millimeter films and that was a uh some home movies um from 1973 1974. uh we think it's from the Pittsburgh area um and I distantly remember going to that Zoo uh my grandparents lived in uh Pittsburgh and uh so I'm sure I went there as a kid like that boat that they got on the fake boat I that just resonates with me for some reason anyhow uh excitingly uh we've been getting a bunch of films from the Oregon archive and ultimately from the Mogul Brothers uh collection which was a library film Library based in New York City um and we got a film set up uh let's see here it is hot ice enjoy who is going to win everyone wants to know some like the Rangers some like Toronto wherever they are whatever they're doing wherever sport fans get together hockey is news good news good enough news to bring us from the Fireside crowds of us gay hopeful good-natured crowds they're out for a good time for excitement and thrills and it's the crowd that keeps it alive and growing it's the crowd that makes National Idols of its favorite players these serious young fellows who play for a living who are catered to by experts and supplied with the best equipment [Music] is there a kid who wouldn't love to be in the dressing room when the players start getting ready for the game the hockey star is a North American hero with plaster Metals covering old Battle Scars [Music] you wouldn't think the players could get hurt under all that armor the padding gives protection but doesn't cramp the player's Style foreign skates go on last they've been tuned up beforehand by a master Craftsman ground to razor sharpness so players can spin on a dime it's natural for highly strung players to get all tightened up before a game so a smart coach doesn't mind a little clouding gets the boys feeling free and loose sticks have been carefully selected Ash and Hickory they've been cut to Legal lengths and carefully balanced they've been trimmed and wound with tape for better control each stick is a little different as each player is a little different [Music] goes into action do they hear his words are they thinking about the crowds or about earlier days hockey players grow in any place where the ice comes early and the thaw comes late the white silent world belongs to the kids their skates are their wings they learn to skate as they learn to walk the eight-year-old will get hold of his big brother skates and put them on over his own shoes and overshoes and still have room room to grow in to develop into the hockey star well that's how a hockey player is made in slow stages from the ankles up legs first skating legs that must learn to move easily and even stride the young kids learn from the older ones [Music] of Terry alapaki the stuff that the Idols are made of they're skaters skaters with long wooden arms that grow out of their own here mother's towels are used as shoulder guards [Music] there's nothing exclusive about this Riot the puck is in there somewhere if you want it go get it and shinny the Only Rule is every man for himself from shinny Comes The Art of stick handling there's no room for fancy skating there's no time for a fancy play you're in there with just a stick and you learn how to use it the hard way [Music] but we must still give our player ahead he gets a share of hockey brains on his neighborhood ring they learn about cross-checking and high sticking and working together as a team that's why so many of the afternoon sessions are spent in drill work a couple of Defense men hitting in time is a pretty thing to watch they work with Split Second precision [Music] attacker and Defender take turns out guessing each other timing is the secret of many a score the wise player never shoots when the goalie wants him to in a battle of wits you win with your head [Music] and now we're ready for the garden it's the last tense moments in the third period between the Rangers and Toronto the dark uniformed Rangers are leading one to nothing and Turk brother Toronto goalie has had a busy night stopping those Ranger forwards a fast breakup Center Ice by Toronto's Chisholm he's spilled by the ranger defense the puck is rolling loose near the ranger blue line and Davidson number four of Toronto gets to it first there's a shot at the ranger goal blocked Davidson regains the puck but only manages a feeble shot Rangers recover and start to come up the ice slowly but again Davidson sweeps in and steals the puck he Maneuvers nicely passes two apps who has a free shot but it's wide again the Rangers take control they come up slowly nursing that one goal lead number 14 is a one-man attack he goes around back of the Toronto cage and misses Rangers again up over the blue line and down into Toronto territory but the Toronto defense takes control and now sunolki goes down the ice for them [Music] Rangers recover and now there's a flurry near the throttle cage but nothing going Colville of the Ranger whizzes down the ice he's blocked sticks are flying a bit high in its Pike and Davidson mixing it up let's turn into a bottle of oil with everyone but the referee having a good time fighting is part of the punch in this fastest game on earth [Music] the penalties go to number 16 Turk and number 11 Pratt clock on the wall gosh I didn't do anything Toronto seems to be playing Ring Around the Rosie I guess they are waiting for their Sixth Man to return they're playing straight defensive hockey [Music] Rangers again but not for long apps breaks up the play and takes the puck down into Ranger territory come on there let the New Yorkers take it back start to come down [Applause] oh the two minutes are up and watch those boys tear out on the ice they're only minutes remaining to play and both teams are tense and nervous there's another mix up near the Toronto gold Turk Roto blocks the play apps saves the day and again brings the action down to Ranger territory the New Yorkers take over and there's a real long shot at Rhoda a goal no it's only on the outside of the net but it gave Toronto fans heart failure now the Rangers bring it down locked against the boards Toronto takes over McDonald comes down the right side of the ice passes two apps who comes up center ice but the ranger defense stops this threat cold Davidson tries a long shot but it's way wide the puck is loose behind the cage Colville brings it up the ice he tries to pass it's broken up Toronto takes over apps has it a pass to Davidson he has a shot he shoots go [Music] all right hold on that's frustrating very very very very frustrating sorry sorry about that let's see if I come back um uh on fate uh so YouTube I'm gone but I should be back at some point um I think that this was National film Board of Canada footage and that's why it got knocked out so that's annoying um let's watch some bird homes enjoy [Music] when the cold of winter is gone and warmth and color return to the Earth we hear the songs of many birds the cheerful song of the Robin is one of the most welcome signs of spring The Robin's home is saddled in this old tree a robin builds one of the most substantial homes in Birdland but by no means the only interesting one bird homes or nests are found in many places in swamps along the seashore in the desert in The Woodlands and even in towns and cities they may be perched high in the air hidden in the dark recesses of a tree or on the ground in this film we will see different kinds of bird homes and learn some of the interesting habits of their builders we will see the kinds of building materials they use and the places where they build their homes this Canada Goose builds her nest near water many birds seem to search out sheltered locations for their nests but some like this mother Canada goose make little effort to hide their homes from enemies perhaps because the goose is such a large and powerful bird it instinctively knows it can protect its home from most enemies Birds use their nests as places to lay their eggs and in some cases to cradle their young this Canada Goose Nest is built of grass and a blanket of Downy feathers now Mother Goose returns from feeding in the nearby Pond and marshes and once again takes her place on the nest goslings of the Canada Goose can swim expertly almost from the moment of birth since they find much of their food in or near the water this is an ideal place for them to make their homes here's another Nest built on the ground this one is near the seashore it's the nest of a turn can you see the two eggs in closer it's easier like other birds mother turn warms the eggs with the heat from her body when she leaves the nest warmth from the Sun on the sand helps to hatch the eggs her nest is a little Hollow the color of the eggs Blends so well with the color of Sand and Stone that they are well hidden from the eyes of enemies now mother turn his back to shade her eggs for long absence from The Nest would find the eggs overheated by the Sun tidal storms and animals that hunt for birds eggs destroy many turn nests if they do survive these baby turns will soon take their places among the tremendous flocks of this common water bird many birds attempt to hide their homes can you see the bird in this picture now it's easier see how well the color of this mother killed ear blends with her surroundings there's her nest and there are her four eggs The Nest is a slight depression in the ground lined with grass killed ear eggs are pale buff in color with blotches of black do you know what mother Kildare is doing now she's trying to get an enemy to follow her away from the nest and here is the villain pretending to be hurt May attract the hungry snake away from the nest the kildeer's broken wing act also warns other birds of an intruder in about 26 to 28 days the eggs are hatched even the young birds are well hidden in their surroundings because of their coloring notice the white collar about the neck of each baby this is one of the distinguishing marks of the Kildeer baby killdeers leave the nest shortly after birth since they can run about they have a better chance to protect themselves on our Western Plains the morning dove sometimes nests on the ground her nest is a flimsy structure of little Twigs notice how her color keeps her well hidden dogs lay two eggs and have three or four Broods during each breeding season this little burrowing owl has its home in a hole in the ground it prefers abandoned animal Burrows like those of the skunk or prairie dog but is capable of digging its own home if the ground is soft The Nest is usually lined with weed stalks and broken bits of cow and horse done the burrowing owl is very active and quite odd in its movements some birds like to attach their nests to structures that have been built by man the Phoebe likes water and has attached her nest under this bridge it is so dark here we have used an electric light to show the nest of mud and Moss in this Woodland not far from water is the nest of the green heron a tree with dense foliage often Evergreen is a favorite site with the nest anywhere from 15 to 20 feet from the ground the Heron's Nest is an untidy structure it's an unlined platform of loose sticks herons have four or five eggs of a pale green color although usually solitary nesters herons often live in colonies with other herons or grackles among scattered small trees or dense Shrubbery we find the yellow warbler its nest is usually within 10 feet of the ground and is placed in an upright Fork of a small tree or shrub The Nest structure is an interlacing of bark and plant fibers and grass and plant Downs the eggs number two to six but there are usually four with its Rich decorative plumage the yellow warbler is a beautiful bird these baby warblers are now ready to leave the nest next to sparrows we have more kinds of Warblers than any other birds some birds like the woodpecker use their sharp beaks to Chisel their homes in the trunks of decaying trees this woodpecker is busy bringing food to her nest can you see any of the babies peering from the cavity that is their home swamps and bayous in warm climates are the nesting places of the anhinga or Snake Bird its popular name is the water turkey the anhinga is about three feet long the male is mostly a glossy greenish black its nest is constructed of sticks leaves dry grass roots and Moss the anhingus Stout webbed feet and sharp claws enable it to climb with ease notice the long necks and the snake-like movements of the necks of these birds red-tailed Hawks build large and bulky nests high above the ground in the forks of large trees a platform of sticks lined with smaller Twigs bits of bark Fern leaves and Moss make up the nest the great horned owl often makes its home in the deserted nest of other large birds those of red-tailed Hawks bald eagles and herons are frequently used cactus wrens usually make their homes in the thorniest places of the choya cactus see how well they are protected purple martins are Community dwellers and like to live in box-like houses provided there in the open and up on a 15 to 20 foot pole often a dozen or more pairs of these birds will occupy as many compartments of a bird box birds are common and easily observed forms of animal life knowing the common varieties in your neighborhood helps you understand nature better and learning the habits of birds that are new to you can be an interesting Hobby a study of birds can be not only delightful but also of value to science there is still much that we do not know and your observations May contribute some worthwhile knowledge about this world of living things [Music] oh YouTube um so we were watching hot eyes uh some of us on YouTube and then suddenly whoop it went away uh my guess is that uh so that film was released in the United States by Sterling films but I think uh I read in the credits that it was from National film Board of Canada and National film Board of Canada uh probably were the ones they're they have stuff online and you know the YouTube robots were like nope uh this doesn't belong to you so that's why they took it down so I apologize for that that blip I don't know who won because I was scrambling to figure out what was going on um but we got another film set up here and hopefully this won't cause problems but who knows man this is Wild Frontier um of showing you stuff and not really doing all that due diligence to see whether or not it's going to get us in trouble and that's why you pay us the coffee that's why you hit the thumbs up button that's why you like what we do because we're a little uh little what's a what's the word I think I might need some more coffee um a little bit of a scoff law um but uh here's surviving the cold it's not quite hot ice but yeah here we go enjoy foreign [Music] strand hundreds of people in their cars isolate thousands in their homes and kill those who are unprepared in this film you will see and hear true stories about six people caught in severe winter weather isolated from help [Music] Ed and Paul mileski were going to their cabin to button it up for the winter when it began to snow a storm hit about halfway up the mountain by the time we got about a mile from our cabin we kept getting stuck every 10 feet we were always out digging which got us wet then the snow got real heavy and you couldn't see five feet in front of you was pretty clear the Bronco wasn't going to make it so we figured we walked to a neighbor's cabin it wasn't real far and we know that area like the back of our hands [Music] the funny thing is Everything Changes at night with the blizzard you couldn't tell which way you were going I thought I knew but boy I just couldn't tell for sure leave this back here we don't we don't put food in the cabin you know it was funny I'd be thinking real clear for a while and then just didn't know what I was doing or where I was going I couldn't even remember Paul's name my own boy and I I couldn't remember his name I got worried wading through that snow dad was really beat he could barely keep up I started thinking about things I'd never thought about before [Music] I fell and dropped our flashlight and didn't pick it up right away like you normally would I knew we were getting Delirious then [Music] we hit that gate nowhere near the cabin too far let's go back to the Bronco well we can't go back we wouldn't make it I wouldn't make it we've got to find that cabin where we can't make it now come on we've got to find that cabin then on I just kept thinking you got to keep going you got to keep pushing I saw that cabin and said one long prayer I could hardly believe we finally found it we walked for two and a half hours and it was less than a half mile from the Bronco all I could think was we had to get inside [Music] we finally got in and then we didn't say anything at all we didn't talk Ed and Paul had become victims of hypothermia a physical condition caused by a person's body losing more heat than it produces the result a dangerously low body temperature when Ed and Paul were outside the conditions were perfect for hypothermia to set in it was cold and they were tired and wet first their bodies tried to generate more heat to combat the cold they began to shiver it was a losing battle the constant exposure to cold wet weather defeated this first line of their body's defense then in order to keep the remaining heat concentrated in the body core the brain heart and lungs their bodies began to cut down blood circulation to their arms and legs this gave their vital organs a fighting chance to continue functioning but it also caused the loss of muscle control in their hands legs and arms as their natural defenses gradually began to break down they became more confused and disoriented if they had not found the cabin the cold would have defeated all their bodies defenses and they would have died in this kind of Emergency the first thing to do is get out of the cold then carefully begin re-warming the body the most important areas to re-warm first are those areas nearest the body core the sides of the chest the neck the groin and the head these are the areas of highest heat loss and highest heat absorption warming these areas first lets the body build back and hold its Heat starting with the body core and gradually spreading to the rest of the body foreign Paul did not re-warm themselves correctly they began by warming their hands and feet and that could have killed them warming the body's extremities first forces Cold Blood to flow back to the body core the result is usually death Paul went to bed that night shivering uncontrollably because his body had not been rewarmed properly both men needed medical assistance desperately it's a miracle they survived [Music] part of the miracle was the cabin they broke into it was owned by a man who believed in being prepared for anything once we got warmed up we found plenty of wood for the fire besides there was a propane tank to heat the cabin too there was plenty of food enough to last us a couple of weeks and you could eat it right out of the can you didn't need a stove to cook it on nothing well they know we're gone yeah they should candles flashlights lanterns all were on hand with plenty of batteries and fuel to keep them working Ed and Paul even found a battery-powered radio it was a relief to hear that Rescuers were out looking for them the cabin Had A well-stocked first aid kit too Ed and Paul were stranded way up in the mountains far from any help but even in a city snowstorms can be dangerous especially for the elderly the elderly can fall victim to hypothermia even at home it's essential for them to maintain warm room temperatures of 68 degrees Fahrenheit or more continued exposure to low room temperatures can easily cause older people to become hypothermic and it is very difficult to detect your turn now they usually don't shiver as hypothermia takes hold but their breathing may become shallow and their heartbeat may slow down whatever either of these symptoms during cold weather means medical help is needed immediately the best cure of course for anyone is prevention stay warm all the time eat well and regularly and keep physically fit these factors will help protect you from winter cold [Music] morning like most people Dennis beam and his daughter Kelly weren't worried about the cold the night their car slid into a ditch in the middle of a blizzard I wasn't really too concerned I had been stuck before and it wasn't all that deep but the wind kept picking up and the storm just didn't let up I was getting wet trying to get the car out but it was no good so I decided to wait about nine that morning we'd been stuck about four hours storm wasn't stopping at all and we were really getting cold I figured nothing was going to happen up there on a country road no help period so I decided to go for help you stay warm and you stay in the car no matter what okay okay everything's gonna be okay I love you I love you too okay now you'll be good right there right there okay I didn't want to be left alone but Dad said he'd be back for me leaving Kelly was like leaving my heart behind and I didn't know when I'd get it back I couldn't see a thing it was freezing my eyes were frozen shut I had ice all over my feet but I had to keep going there was nothing else to do help please this is Kelly B we had a CB waiting on the car so I tried to call for help help but no one answered I kept wondering where Daddy was can you hear me it took me three hours to get to a house and it was literally my last ounce of energy my feet were black parts of my face were frozen but that wasn't my main concern Kelly was still in that car and the police said they couldn't get to her until the storm stopped and there was nothing I could do after it got dark I didn't know what had happened I couldn't stop thinking about Dad I have some pieces of candy but I wanted to save it for Dad because I thought he'd be hungry when he came back [Music] after 10 hours I didn't know what to think she'd been alone so long there was a lot of worry time then yeah a lot of thinking time Kelly's okay I think I had to leave her in the car from the car I dreamed that Daddy might not come back foreign the next morning the storm broke and the police headed off to get Kelly you heard anything nothing yet all I could think was that after 19 hours who knows she'd been there so long with no heat I kept hoping I'd put enough emphasis on staying in that car until I got back when The Rescuers came I asked if that was okay he said yeah I was glad because it was all over and dad was okay it's for you yes thank God and then the call came she was okay my whole world lit up then oh thank God thank you very much yes okay she's okay Kelly suffered only mild symptoms of hypothermia as the snow buried the car it insulated and protected her from the severe cold and high wind Dennis was badly frostbitten because of his walk through the snow which of the two had been in the most danger without a doubt Dennis as soon as he left the car he put himself in tremendous Jeopardy neither father or daughter were well prepared for the extreme weather conditions they encountered a few carefully chosen items would have given them the extra margin of safety they needed one blanket wasn't enough sleeping bags would have been better extra clothing would have been extremely welcome after Dennis got wet matches and candles a flashlight with extra batteries signal flares high calorie non-perishable food a shovel and a sack of sand ashes or even kitty litter and a first aid kit these are examples of items you need winter travel is serious business and you must be prepared for it your car should be in good working order know the route you plan to take and tell somebody else where you're going and when you plan to arrive check the latest weather information before you leave the National Weather Service provides up to the minute weather forecasts and can predict most severe storms if the people in our next story had listened to the weather forecast they would be alive today traveling back to school two students drove directly into a severe winter storm they had a four-wheel drive vehicle and were sure they could get through first they came up on a roadblock warning travelers to pull off the highway they went around it several miles further they got stuck in a large snow drift directly under a bridge they tried to dig out but it was hopeless soaking wet they changed clothes stuck in the snow drift isolated from help they decided to set it out wait until someone came along and found them [Music] the next morning someone did they were dead they had made two fatal Mistakes One traveling in the face of deteriorating weather conditions and two ignoring a police roadblock ironically it appeared that after they got stuck they did everything right they started the car every so often to keep warm they changed into dry clothing after getting wet trying to dig out and they didn't abandon their car however stuck under the bridge the wind trapped fatal carbon monoxide fumes around and inside the car a freak accident Maybe but they really died because they didn't use common sense after those first two mistakes every other decision only compounded their Danger Ed and Paul mileski Dennis and Kelly Bean could have been winter storm fatalities the two students were being prepared for winter emergencies will always better your odds in a snowstorm so will using good judgment and Common Sense these guidelines if you get caught in a severe snowstorm will help you survive the cold [Music] thank you [Music] thank you [Music] wow yes I mean the narrator gave away the fact that that one couple died it's kind of annoying but I don't know what are you gonna do what are you gonna do um to mix things up a bit Let's uh watch uh crisscross air defense systems versus electronic warfare enjoy [Music] this is an air defense command Direction Center in the Southwest typical of the hundreds spotted throughout the Free World [Music] here in the operations room the battle for North America can be either won or lost this is how the Personnel works on radar Scopes the search radar operators continually look for movements of blips they become tracks which are recorded on a plotting board the movements and identification officer checks them against the plans of all known flights in their assigned Zone if it is unknown the senior director scrambles one or more all-weather interceptors and the duty director vectors them until positive identification is made the mission of the direction Center then is to detect the intruder identify him intercept him destroy him detection identification interception destruction in another War Electronics will be decisive the battle for Air Supremacy is resolving itself into a battle for electronic superiority in our electronic system are such vital equipment as early warning aircraft picket chips Texas towers and search radar which tells the direction center of the approaching intruder used along with it is the iff identification friend or full which helps us identify and Vector our Fighters and whose electronic waves also assist in the identification of Airborne targets the height range indicator gives us the altitude of the approaching intruder then there is the all-weather Interceptor radar this electronic Fire Control System places the Interceptor on a proper attack course and at the correct time fires rockets and it called for guided missiles another essential Link in controlling our Interceptor Crews by vectors is air-to-ground radio communications wires leased from the telephone companies pass important intelligence weather and Intruder information from one unit to another while as a backup the same task can be performed by high frequency radio altogether our electronic defense system stands out as a Target a vulnerable one certain to be marked by an intruder for electronic warfare an intruder's attempt through his special electronic equipment to reduce the effectiveness of ours if a pattern is not normal the maintenance technician is notified at once crisscross he and all operators are trained in the recognition of intruder electronic countermeasures and how to go about reducing their effectiveness but first let's look at some of these countermeasures many of them such as confusion reflectors have the purpose of screening and deception popular among them is chat strips of aluminum foil which give the false impressions of Targets in the hope that we squander our Interceptor effort upon Phantom aircraft another bid to make us waste our Interceptor strength are repeaters they make a single Target appear like a multiple raid the way one voice in a canyon sounds like a full chorus our radar can also become the victim of electromagnetic waves often caused by the interference of our own radars then there is equipment trouble which also must not be mistaken for an intruder tactic in contrast there is the deliberate attempt to litter our Scopes by an intruder this is jamming a technique which takes many forms all of them must be recognized it is equally essential to master the defensive technique of anti-jamming the use of certain electronic tactics and circuits which reduce or eliminate the jamming effect most of these circuits are built into Radars throughout the Free World the technician must be fully trained for someday this might happen sweep Jammy the intruder at work once he has determined that the interference is not internal malfunction anti-jamming techniques are put into play results are not always immediate but persistence pays off enabling the duty director to read through he orders a scramble [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] now for the electronic flash report it describes the type of jamming and the present effectiveness of the radar it is then assessed for the intruder's effort and the information dispatched at once to the air defense control center or the several state area and the combat Operation Center of the Air Defense command the attack continues the Intruder is heading right on course for his Target one of North America's biggest industrial cities from the air defense command's combat Operation Center in the heart of the United States all echelons of the air defense system are alerted the emergency battle plan goes into action back at the direction Center the Scopes are being kept readable through the constant efforts of the technician he must constantly manipulate his anti-jamming controls if results are to be achieved only with a readable scope can the duty director Vector our all-weather interceptors for the kill in addition every pilot is schooled to recognize jamming of his own electronic Fire Control System when he is finally able to read through he can attack but as we know not only radar is vulnerable to electronic warfare there is also radio Jammy which causes interference between the pilot and the director by another circuit maintenance men are asked to check their radio equipment the answer the trouble is not internal it is necessary to switch to a pre-planned Channel this anti-jamming technique is known as Channel rotation many assigned channels may have to be tried in the hope that the fighter crew chooses one that is not jammed then again this plan May Fail altogether in that case we revert to brofacon broadcast fighter control using standard broadcast frequencies the duty director gets through to his interceptors Pilots however are cautioned against false messages sent out by the intruder they are taught to beware of incongruities such as change of voice radical departures from their course or sudden recall when in doubt they consult their authentication list the code of the moment between the air and ground teams the battle continues another splash but our losses are also mounting another scramble is ordered maximum effort as the battle progresses our Interceptor control passes to another Direction centered the jammed scope is being cleared again persistence is paying off the new Duty director reads through he reaches his Pilots meanwhile something is happening to the intruder his speeds and altitudes are changing he is changing course innovation of our effort he is reverting to tactics favorable to our air defense system he is using up his fuel missing his time over Target he has lost the advantage of a concerted attack because we are fighting back fighting back in the electronic warfare he has declared upon our air defense system employing our anti-jamming techniques with persistence and reading through but our story is not finished the Intruder has not been completely destroyed remnants of his attacking Force are nearing the gun defended area around the target complex our men of the radar controlled of Nike battalions are ready they too know how to combat electronic warfare but any slip up in our system and we can expect this this could be Pittsburgh Detroit Chicago any City unless we are prepared prepared with Personnel who have been carefully and thoroughly trained in electronic warfare recognition reporting reading through these men and their skills represent the greatest electronic counter-counter measures we possess it is with them and only with them that the air defense system can combat electronic warfare [Music] this is how it must be done [Applause] [Music] wow um yeah so that was a training film um for people that uh monitor uh radar um I think I got we get your comments about you know what you how you feel about the film but also all these uh references these popular culture references uh and not so popular culture references so all the red alert
