that that is all right sorry about that I was eating a sandwich and then I went over to try the microphone and it crapped out good times anyways I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and my hair kind of does whatever it wants um yeah so that was uh part two of the How Sound helps us reels um some beautiful footage I love that footage of the all the kids like in the band playing that was that was pretty great so today is uh Friday made it through another week uh and uh this one today is a little themed for no reason except that I picked a film and I was like oh I wonder if I have other films that are ated so this is films about pipes so let's start off with um this amazing marionette film uh which I can't remember if I've shown this or not I haven't had a chance but it's it deserves to be watched again because it's marionette and it's Oregan music so enjoy come John it's time we were going home yes I know I'm coming what I don't know but we don't Catherine yes we promised mother not to be late for dinner don't you ever keep your promises I am the Lord mayor I do as I please yes my Lord I hear something in the [Music] street is it the town's people coming again to complain about the rats is it no it's only Catherine and John but the people have a right to complain it isn't safe to go on the streets John close the door you want to let the rat in yes sire no s mother in the forest we heard a strange ping now children eat your porridge did your children see any rats yes Father the barest was full of rats my name is Lord May they'll find no rats in this house not a rat who's that those people there I can't open my door the rats will come in I'll speak with you here quickly very well lord well what is it the rat bit my baby your lar my baby yes course the children the rats are everywhere haven't I promised to get rid of the rats that was many weeks ago your grace nothing has been done I haven't kept your promise something will be done but s now leave me alone now what will you do how should I know but you promis to do something of course I had to promise something no The restat Who to blame for this there go a table get up sck [Music] mother this that c the same tune we heard in the [Music] forest I hear it it's coming down the street a strange tune look Catherine oh I see it's a fing man come away children it [Music] fail what now Lord mayor of Hamin yes I would speak to you ask him here well come in [Music] who are you madam your lordship I have come to rid your town of Bratz what I am a piper with many Tunes to play when I pipe no living thing can help but follow me you can pipe the rats away I can I I have a very special tune for Rats show me at once very [Music] [Music] well [Music] [Music] excellent truly superb and where I go they'll follow me oh take them to the river let them jump in then they'll never come back very well at once of course I must be paid before I play paid why of course anything 100 gild agreed no pipe away pipe away I'll take your [Music] word he has saved us let us hope so oh look the street is black with r hundreds of R they're heading toward the river no good rid you were wise this deed is worth more than 100 gilders you don't think I intend to pay but you promise the rats will be dead he can't pipe them back again pay indeed [Music] L didn't I promise to get rid of the r come in and welcome and now if you'll pay me your lordship I'll be on my way to other towns with other Tunes to play we are very grateful for what you have done thank you and yet it may be sometime before we know how well you will play 100 gilders as you promised yes you promised for all I know there may still be rats I assure you they are gone it may take some time to prove that it may take forever yes it may I cannot bargain with you again you promised the money now I shall take what I can until you are willing to pay no what will you take what's this C John come back don't listen what does he mean he's taking the children don't you see just as he took the rat Catherine John why don't you stop him my Good Wife pay him the money you promise run after him please and bring the children back come back Catherine John come back oh 100 gilders my Lord no [Laughter] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] it's very quiet yes the children are gone but they should be back soon they won't be back not until you pay the pipe yes perhaps I should I'll get the money 100 gilders you can't pretend to pay I go [Music] once the mayor is coming to take you to your children hurry bring them home quickly Town people come with me I am ready to pay the piper a how much it took to make him realize he had to keep his [Music] promises so at some point we will find a color version of that and we'll have to watch it again because that film was awesome um the uh organ music I very much love uh and just the whole all the little rat marionettes oh man it it almost makes me want to become a puppeteer because they were so awesome um and just have like just rats uh and plus that story is so whacked out and crazy uh so big fan of that um what do we got next um so pipes uh is the theme today and you know in the future I might if you guys like it I might do more themed things um which which will mean that we'll probably show stuff from the past uh that we've shown in the past uh probably try to not to show things that are too recent but um yeah uh I won't do that all the time but uh maybe once once a week we'll do that uh and it'll definitely be something I do if I pre-record so anyways here's uh another film called pipe dreams what do we think it's about [Music] enjoy [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] who comes to mind when you see a pipe oh my good who is that who's that is that that fish I've been looking for no oh who is it oh it's a blond headed boy I bet I'll bet his name is James no Robin no and my be Steven right well come on and help me fish where you you want to look at that P reach for it I want you want smoke no no no but look at it a't that pretty feel it feel that that's nice beautiful that's [Music] nice who comes to mind when you see a pipe only place to cut back dramatically is in personnel I don't understand why we have to cut back at all all we have to do is lower our production output 3 to 4% right great great just what in the world are you suggesting Look What I suggest to you is that we just gentlemen I appreciate your ideas let's break for now I'll think it over and give you my decision tomorrow okay who comes to mind when you see a pipe [Music] who comes to mind you do as you dream of owning your first smoking pipe who else comes to mind a skilled tobacconist who passes his love for handcrafted pipes onto each curious customer who wants more from smoking than just smoke there's an unlimited variety of materials from which pipes have been made clay stone ivory bone and a choice of metals yet the classic Brier and the Mir sham are still the favorites Brier comes from the Burl of the white Heath tree grown in Corsica Italy or Asia Minor the Brier is tough porous and nearly impervious to heat the Brier may be 50 to 100 years old when harvested for pipe making because no two burls grow alike perhaps one in a thousand Brier pipes created each year may have a uniformly fine grain pattern and Perfection of finish though they may cost several hundred these absolutely perfect pipes or firsts represent the Pinnacle of the pipe Maker's art second or Brier pipes that have tiny natural surface flaws are sold at more attractive prices and give their owner exactly the same smoking pleasure as a first the difference athetics and the pride of owning a perfect pipe heft a Brier in your hand when considering its purchase lightweight Brier is well-aged and offers a good tasting cool smoke Miram is German for Sea Foam created from small fossilized sea creatures Mir sham can be found almost exclusively in Turkey Asia Minor and East Africa very lightweight and extremely porous Mir sham offers a cool unique smoking [Music] experience pipe Carvers take advantage of Mam's tender nature to create real works of art after a period of time time when properly cared for air sham will take on a distinctive Rich cherry color often passed on from generation to generation many a man's Mir sham pipe has become a family heirloom just how do you go about selecting a fine wine the right suit or a smoking pipe by Personal Taste by lifestyle and with the advice of a trained specialist the well-established professional tobacco can lay an endless variety of smoking instruments before you and give you advice as to which best compliments you your lifestyle and appearance not every shaped pipe will match every smoker Bo Paul Church Warden Dublin [Music] Bulldog Prince pot Canadian poker billiard Apple the well stocked tobacconist not only carries the standard shapes but unique one-of-a-kind freehand pipes as well choosing your pipe pipe is only the beginning now to select your tobacco almost all pipe tobaccos belong to one of the two basic groups those used as the base of a blend and those that add flavor and Aroma before you acquire preference for a particular blend your advisor has taken the trouble to prepare a variety of tobacco formulas to the specifications of Europe's most prestigious tobacconist he'll pick the ideal blend to start you on your way to a cool dry smoke after choosing the blend first gravity feed the tobacco into the bowl of the pipe level off the excess and then gently press the tobacco down about 2/3 from the top now gravity feed the tobacco again into the bowl press slightly harder this time about 1/3 from the top finally gravity feed the tobacco to overflowing and press firmly the tobacco should be slightly springy and level with the top of the PIP a word of caution don't be a Hyper Piper move the match slowly around the outside edge of the tobacco and take long Puffs next tap the ashes gently pressing them down lightly upon the unburned tobacco as you relight puff rhythmically blow gently into the stem between Puffs this feeds air to the base of the bowl just as a Bellos feeds a forge you want want to eventually create a cake of carbon in the heel or bottom of the pipe to improve the draft and assure complete combustion and a cool enjoyable smoke do smoke the tobacco all the way to the bottom but smoke slowly if your pipe becomes uncomfortably hot to the touch set it aside to cool don't knock the ashes of your first load out of the pipe simply fluff the loose Ash out and keep a gray Ash residue in the bottom this is the start of the cake in your pip now sit back and relax it's really quite simple a smoking pipe [Music] cinch [Music] the professional tobacconist who who gave you advice on choosing a pipe will show you how to care for it as well rest your pipe at least a full day after smoking it to give the tars and moisture a chance to dry out use a pipe cleaner with stiff bristles before and after each smoke to absorb liquid residues a reamer is a tool that adjusts to fit the shape of the bowl to gently scrape off the occasional overabundance of carbon deposits a tamper is an essential tool used for packing down the burning tobacco Within in the bowl your tobacconist can show you a vast assortment of pipe tools and tampers many combined in one at home be sure to place your pipe at the proper drainage angle with the bowl lower than the stem since dryy tobacco smokes fast and hot and wet tobacco smokes wet and bitter it's wise to invest in a humidor that will keep your tobacco as fresh as the day you bought it a humid rol or a tobacco moisturizer so once a week in water and place deep in your tobacco will assure a clean smoke every time and remember that when you try a new blend it takes at least six loads to burn away the old flavor before you can enjoy the true Taste of the new tobacco the previous blend you smoke tends to linger in the pipe and needs to burn away many wbe pipe smokers have purchased a pipe only to try it once have a hot or bitter taste in their mouth and then give up pipe smoking before they even got started a bitter taste could be due to no cake in the heel of the pipe tobacco that is packed too tightly or low quality tobacco feel free to discuss such problems with your professional tobacconist who can certainly remedy the situation there's no such thing as a one pipe Piper since it's necessary to let your pipe rest and dry out before you smoke it owning and smoking a number of pipes makes a lot of sense by rotating your pipes you'll be able to have a variety of shapes and tastes at your disposal you may choose a Brier today A Mir Sham tomorrow or perhaps a Brier with a Mira lining the day after you may want to own a pipe for the opening of a lefit Roth's child the closing of a deal the beginning of a collection or the ending of the day since there's a wide range of cost as well as quality differences in smoking pipes it's best to do business with a reputable professional tobacconist he should be able to advise you about pipes cigars all blends of tobaccos give you gift ideas and most importantly stand behind every product he sells by buying from a truly professional well-trained tobacconist you are assured excellent service and consistent quality in tobacco and pipes almost anywhere in the country enjoy a smoking experience throughout history man has carried his pipe as a reliable friend for emotional comfort and mental calm give a man a pipe he can smoke give a man a book he can read and his home is bright with a calm Delight though the room be poor [Music] indeed so some good questions at the end here um where would somebody see this film so this was made by Walter J Klein's uh organization and made by his son Robert and Walter J Klein was an ad agency based in Charlotte North Carolina and what they did uh Walter actually wrote a book about this uh which was called the sponsored film which is basically um what he would do is he would his team him or his son would come up with a script and then approach potential sponsors to make the script uh with educational types of films like bus safety like um what are some other examples of of the ones for kids like dental hygiene things like that they would he would reach out accordingly to different companies and then those would be made and distributed to schools for free or for a reduced rate and basically the sponsor would help pay for the advertising or would help pay for the production and all that but um this film obviously not shown to school kids uh shown to adults would be aired on television so this was like a infomercial basically for Tinder Box Tinderbox was a chain of tobacco shops that were mostly in malls like I remember one in Charlotte mall Eastland Mall probably South Park and I was kind of looking to see like can you see the outside of you know the area around that cuz I remember there a Tinder Box I obviously didn't go in but I would look in the window and see like cool chest sets and like those big uh cast like things of of like The Three Stooges or WC Fields And it's like all that like kitschy um chachki stuff that for men it was all like aimed towards men for the most part so South Park Mall um not the TV show South Park uh so um yes lots of wood and brown um and they totally went away at some point uh and I remember remember my dad was smoking a pipe for a very short period of time um but he didn't really smoke otherwise um so there you go uh I should say Walter J Klein's company was also responsible for Texas Pete Hot Sauce if any of you know who Texas Pete uh is uh in the lawsuit where somebody realized that Texas Pete was not made in Texas and they got mad it was made in Winston Salem North Carolina um they also made the regrettably uh bad uh decision to create Pedro for South of the Border and kind of created this whole mythology of hundreds of billboards up and down the Eastern seab board saying that you should go to this glorified Truck Stop convenience store um he also helped uh develop Chimney Rock which is in the mountains uh of North Carolina into a tourist attraction so there were some key things that Walter J Klein did um that resonate easily with anyone who's grew up in North Carolina all right what do we got what do we got so we're going to go to the film behind us uh on the scanner this is basic pipe fitting so we're going to start off basic so everybody's going to learn how to do basic pipe fitting and I have to change the title but I will do that soon all right enjoy [Music] in any industrial plant the various units of machinery and equipment are connected by miles of piping each piping system consists of sections of pipe fittings for joining the sections and valves for controlling the flow most systems also include accessories such as vents drains traps strainers relief Valves and various gauges and instruments the most common method of joining pipe is the screwed connection which consists of threaded male and female ends screwed together this film demonstrates basic piping methods of threaded systems pipe fittings may be easily damaged and should be handled and stored properly they should be sorted by type and size and stored in bins for easy identification keep protectors on the end of valves and other fittings until they're ready to be installed storing piping materials properly will pay dividends after installation pipe is normally manufactured in 20ft random lengths and should be stored in racks according to type and size if outside storage is necessary the pipe should be covered as a protection against rusting pipe and fitting scattered about the floor or working area are subject to damage and accumulation of foreign matter any dirt chips or Burrs which collect in the pipe or fittings will sooner or later damage valve seats pumps or instrumentation when handling pipe protect the threads from damage do not bounce or drag the threaded ends on the ground or floor fittings Put On Loosely will protect the threads occasionally a threaded end will be damaged in handling when this happens don't take a chance with the joint if the end is badly damaged cut it off and rethread if the threads are just bruised or dirty they may be repaired by running a diey over them to clean and straighten bruised or dirty female threads in fittings can usually be repaired by running a pipe tap into the threads the inside of the pipe should also be cleaned of any foreign matter use compressed air a long-handled brush or swab it out with a rag taking this precaution May prevent system breakdowns later new as well as stock material should be cleaned dirt can be one of the biggest piping headaches when using the wheel and roll cutter to cut pipe the cutter must be revolved completely around the pipe tighten the handle about one4 turn after each rotation and repeat this procedure until the pipe is cut through hand pipe cutters can be used for pipe up to 6 in in diameter a wheel and roll cutter will leave a burr on the inside of the pipe if this Burr is not removed it will impede the flow through the pipe and may choke the line by causing hangup of solid materials for this reason the Burr must be removed with a reamer always ream the pipe before threading reaming after threading they stretch the pipe pipe threading is a precise Machining operation perfect threads are possible only if the threading dieses are in good condition and are used properly the threads are cut with a set of dyes mounted in a die head to start the dyes press the head against the pipe end with one hand and turn the stock with the other after the dyes have engaged for a thread or two they will feed along without pressure worn dyes will cause ragged and torn threads and the threads will not be cut deep enough make sure the dye is started on the pipe squarely or crooked threads will result always in all the new dieses in the die head in the proper sequence match the numbers on the dyes with corresponding numbers on the diey head new dyes should always be used on brass aluminum or plastic and stainless steel dyes should be used on stainless steel pipe remember dyes are precision tools and should be kept clean and well lubricated the correct thread length and taper will be cut on a section of pipe when it has gone through the die head and the end of the pipe is even with the end of the dyes further threading will produce only straight threads which serve no useful purpose the pipe thread length should be only long enough to fully engage agage the threads in the fitting when the thread length is too short it will not engage the fitting properly it cannot resist expansion contraction or vibration and will probably leak pipe threads that are cut too long may interfere with the flow of the fluid they may also damage valve seats or other expensive fittings frequent flooding of the dyes with a good grade of cutting oil will further Safeguard against poor threads the oil keeps the material lubricated and ensures a smoother cut by reducing friction and heat insufficient cutting oil or dull dyes may cause ragged threads and may cause the threading job to be rejected when cutting threads on stainless steel pipe kerosene or penetrating oil may be used as a lubricant to get good metalo metal contact in a joint first wipe the threads clean dirt or metal chips will make a good fit impossible to prevent contamination of the piping system the inside of the pipe must be cleaned of metal chips and excess cutting oil wire brushing is recommended especially on newly cut threads or if the pipe has been exposed to the weather when assembling screwed connections place a good thread lubricant or pipe dope on the male threads only the lubricant is used not as a cement to seal the joint but to reduce friction when pulling the joint up tight it is not expected to compensate for poor workmanship placing the lubricant on the male threads prevents any from entering the piping system causing harm to Precision equipment some pipe dope is made to compensate for less than perfect threads but it may set up very hard and be difficult to dismantle lamp wick may be used on larger size water or steam lines to help prevent leaks it tends to swell when wet and often seals a stubborn leak Teflon tape is another popular lubricant it's not messy to use and it's especially good on stainless steel pipe start the joint by hand feeling if the thread engagement is right and turn it up as far as it will go if the threads were cut correctly and are free of dirt the fitting should go on approximately five turns by hand a few turns with a wrench will be all that's needed to complete the joint never attempt to run all the male threads into the joint the lead of the dye always leaves a few imperfect and unusable threads leaning on a joint with an oversized wrench May distort A fitting or Force the pipe into a valve seat it never should be necessary to use an extension handle on a wrench to make up a tight joint like an oversized wrench the added leverage May stretch or crack a fitting the only use for an extension handle is when dismantling stubborn joints in an existing line when piping sections are joined without the use of a vise place two wrenches close together in opposite directions more leverage is obtained if the wrenches are kept within one quarter turn of each other in a scissor-like fashion never attempt to assemble pipe sections with only one wrench for best results with piping tools choose the right type and choose the right size pipe wrenches vary in size from 10 in up to 48 in in length the size of the pipe being installed normally determines the wrench size to be used a wrench that is too small will not be capable of making up a tight joint and one that is oversized May distort or crack the fitting the harder the pool on a pipe wrench the tighter The Squeeze it's designed to be used on pipe and screwed fittings only on Parallel sided objects its efficiency does not equal the monkey wrench and its squeezing action can do great damage using a pipe wrench on a valve May Crack or crush the valve body for hexagonal end Valves and fittings a monkey wrench with its smooth square jaws is always best not only does it fit better on the part to be turned it doesn't have the crushing effect of a pipe wrench the strap wrench is used when working on plated or polished materials in order not to Mar the surfaces also it often comes in handy in tight places where a pipe wrench will not reach pipe tongs are wrenches of the chain strap and lever type they're mainly used for larger size pipe over 3 in always place the wrench on the pipe end of the valve or fitting this gives more direct leverage on the joint and prevents the possibility of twisting the unsupported valve body or distorting the fitting when using a machinist Vice to hold a valve for any repair work place it with the Jaws to the valve ends not the sides of the valve this is a precaution against damaging the valve body when working on fittings that are easily damaged always use soft Jaws copper or lead covers over the Jaws to prevent damage to the finished surfaces long runs of piping must be supported by hangers there are many types of hangers available which may be fastened to walls floors ceilings or pillars excessive sagging in a line will strain any connection and probably cause leakage hangers should be spaced to prevent this excessive sagging extra hangers should be used where the pipeline changes Direction and to support additional weight such as a large valve and to keep the weight of the line off pumps or other equipment when possible pipe hangers should be installed before the piping sections this will speed up the pipe installation and may reduce plant shutdown time unions permit the disconnecting of piping runs without cutting unions should be used generously and should be located close to valves or other components which require occasional repair or replacement the three parts of a union are carefully machined to fit and are not interchangeable from one manufacturer to another always keep the three parts of a union together when assembling always keep the nut of the Union on the Upstream side never St drain a union to make the two Hales match if the pipe is too short replace it with one of the correct length a coupling is used to join sections of pipe in long runs the straight coupling has threads with no taper and only one or two threads actually fit tight they're used primarily for low pressure work line couplings have tapered threads and make up like any other fitting line couplings are required for High Press applications the globe valve so-called because of its globular outline is used to control liquids gases and Vapors by means of throttling the closure disc and seat increases resistance to flow and permits close regulation of the flow the flow is proportional to the number of turns of the wheel in opening or closing the valve the globe valve is ideal for service that requires frequent valve settings or throttling an angle valve is similar to a globe valve but the path of flow through the valve is more direct it offers less restriction to flow than the standard globe valve this angle valve reduces the number of piping joints and saves makeup time gate valves are most widely used in industrial piping the gate valve allows a flow in a straight line there is little resistance to flow with less friction and pressure drop provided the valve disc is kept fully open when closed the gate seats against two seat faces to stop the flow gate valves are designed to be operated in their fully open or fully closed position a partly open gate valve will cause vibration and turbulence and will result in damage to the seating surface when they are opened or closed properly they will last a long time and will require little maintenance check valves are non- return valves and are used to prevent backflow in piping systems in operating principle check valves fall into two basic categories swing check and lift check most check valves have an arrow or the word Inlet cast on the valve body to indicate the direction of flow a swing check valve is usually used where full flow is desired and should be installed so that the disc will close by back flow or gravity swing check valves are usually used with gate valves a lift check valve is usually used when the operation of the valve is very frequent lift check valves will seat more firmly and tightly than swing check valves again the disc is seated by backf flow or by gravity when there is no flow caution when installing any check valve see that the flow enters at the proper end and that the disc opens with the flow lift check valves are normally used with globe valves strainers are used in a piping system to remove foreign matter that might Lodge under valve seats or get into close- fitting parts of automatic devices and prevent proper operation the line fluid passes through the screening area trapping the foreign matter but allows free fluid flow with minimum pressure loss strainers also furnish a pocket for accumulation of the foreign matter a generous use of strainers is a Sound Investment in any piping system all strainers are marked with an arrow indicating the flow Direction and must be placed in the line in this direction periodic blowing out of the accumulated sediment should be the only maintenance needed relief valves are installed in piping systems to prevent the buildup of excessive pressure due to the sudden closing of Outlet valves failure of regulating or reducing valves or other causes whenever piping is installed to a relief valve it must be at least as large as the valve connection under no circumstances should it be reduced a pressure reducing regulator is an automatic valve which is used to provide a steady pressure pressure lower than the supply pressure the regulator can be adjusted for any desired discharge pressure within the design limits of the valve install the regulator in a horizontal position at a high point in the line as close as possible to the equipment being supplied arrows cast on the regulator will indicate the direction of flow a a bypass line of the proper size should have a globe valve suitable for throttling should the regulator be down for service always install a relief valve then a pressure gauge on the low pressure side of the regulator be sure to install a strainer ahead of the regulator to screen out any foreign matter gate valves installed on each side of the regulator will permit shut off for repair or replacement of the regulator a Union close to the regulator and one in the bypass line will permit easy disassembly a typical pressure reducing station will be complete with a strainer unions gate and Globe valves a bypass line pressure gauge and a pressure relief valve note the schematic diagram from which the station was constructed a steam trap should be installed whenever condensate must be drained or recovered it's a must for steam piping and all steam heated or steam operated equipment always install a strainer just ahead of the trap to prevent entry of any foreign matter a bypass line with a globe valve makes it possible to purge the system of condensate by hand throttling while the Trap is out of service unions installed close to the Trap and in the bypass line will permit quick disassembly for repairs or replacement an arrow or the words Inlet and Outlet cast on the Trap will indicate the direction of flow the typical steam trap station can contains a strainer gate and Globe valves unions and a bypass line again notice the schematic diagram when making up any piping assembly a hydrostatic test will indicate any leaking joints and show if the system is pressure tight a test is always advisable to protect the pipe fitter from costly leaks in an operating system when liquids are not desired in a piping system the pressure test may be conducted using compressed air or nitrogen caution never use oxygen or an inflammable gas when making this test leaks may be detected by coating the joints with a mixture of soap and water and watching for bubbles the vast scope of piping systems includes threaded welded plastic stainless and special Alloys for nuclear stations High pressures and special chemical resistance basic pipe fitting is an entrance into this field of great activity remember the improper installation of any one component can cause the failure of an entire process [Music] line well that was uh that was quite awesome it was super Niche but uh there you go go that's what pipe fitting is all about and we've learned the basics of it so uh maybe next week I'll show you Advanced pipe fitting uh actually I don't know if I have that film but uh thanks so much for tuning in if you like what you saw you can hit the thumbs up the like button you can also donate via the super thanks button uh you can also go to ko-fi.com avgeeks and buy us coffee or you can support us in a more formal way VIA patreon.com avgeeks and we use that to buy stuff like uh cores 160 mm cores um everybody have a great weekend and we'll see you on Monday take care
