hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show let me mute myself on that computer my hair is going a little crazy I am back oh boy yesterday was long um and annoying all related to PE all related to pee um and um so I hope you enjoyed the show involving uh Breaking Down rocks into smaller rocks and lasers because that's what I dealt with yesterday anyways I'm feeling really great uh I appreciate the kind words yesterday um that was really sweet although I was still kind of in an anesthesia Haze when I was looking at the comments and I was like um but we're back so excited to be back uh let's go ahead and get started with uh a cornet film what a surprise safety after school this is interesting this is not one that I've seen I'm kind of excited uh to see there seems to be like a whole batch of ones that just don't show up in uh eBay searches and things like that and it might be that I just you know what happens with cornet is I have like a lot of copies of this and I see lots of copies for for sale but in actually digitizing the uh cornet collection I'm we're finding stuff that I'm like wow I've never heard of that title wow that's crazy so here's safety after school enjoy [Music] eny [Music] it's 3:00 and school is out the children can't wait to start playing what will the boys do this afternoon Jimmy Steve and Bobby are talking it over Jimmy is a new boy at school and he'd like Bobby and Steve to come over to his house to play he says there are a lot of things they could do he'd like his new friends to come Bobby and Steve are glad to be invited Jimmy explains where his home is and says they can walk home with him right now Steve thinks that's a good idea but Bobby doesn't he's going home to tell his mother where he will play you coming Steve Steve knows that's the right thing to do they'll both go home first and see Jimmy a little later this is one of the streets that Bobby and Steve and the other children cross each day on their way home all the children wait at the curb for the crossing guard signal they walk carefully between the two white lines and they don't run or push or shove the boys are so busy talking about some of the things they might do at Jimmy's house that they're not watching where they're walking uhoh Steve has hurt himself it's not too serious but it could have been a lot worse someone wasn't careful about where he left his bicycle never leave bicycles or toys on sidewalks and always look where you walk whether you're walking on a sidewalk or crossing a street a car stops and the driver calls to the boys the man seems to know Bobby he says he's Mr Arnold a friend of Bobby's father Bobby thinks he knows Mr Arnold but he's not sure but Bobby knows that he must not ride home with anybody unless he has permission from his father or mother he tells Mr Arnold no thank you Mr Arnold knows that the boys are following a safety rule don't ride with anyone unless you have permission from your parents yes the boys are remembering their safety rules after school here's another one look both ways before you cross at home Bobby asks for permission to go with Steve to Jimmy's house Bobby's mother says yes she knows that Bobby is old enough to take care of himself but he must be home by 5:00 Bobby understands and he will be careful and Steve will go too if his mother gives him permission but his knee hurts a little Bobby explains that Steve hurt his knee on the way home from school Bobby's mother is glad that the boys mentioned this because now she can help she'll have a look at the knee a little first aid is probably all that Steve needs while she gets a bandage for the cut Steve is going to call his mother to ask about going to Jimmy's of course he knows his phone number and how to dial it calling home to ask permission or to let your mother know where you are is another way to practice safety after school can he go to Jimmy's his mother says yes but she wants him home by 5:00 Steve says he will be home on time and now let's see about that knee it's just skinned up a bit Bobby's mother washes Steve's cut with soap and water it's always best to take care of a cut right away so it won't get dirty or infected next she puts on a clean bandage there the bandage is in place and Steve will be able to play safe now let's see if the boys think about safety on their way to Jimmy's house there's something that isn't safe it's very dangerous to ride a bicycle that way well looks like the Johnson's have a new dog he seems friendly enough Steve wants to pet the dog does that seem safe Bobby says no the dog may be unfriendly it's best not to be too friendly with strange animals now Bobby and Steve are coming to A Street they've never crossed before if they cross between the parked cars they can't see the traffic too well and the drivers may not see them never cross in the middle of a block Steven Bobby do the right thing they walk to the corner they look both ways and cross safely just across the street some new apartments are being built wouldn't it be fun playing here there are so many places to hide and so many things to climb and look there's a fire where scrapwood is being burned some boys are playing near the fire Bobby and Steve know this is dangerous the other boys know they shouldn't be doing this that's why they run when the Workman comes the Workman tells Bobby and Steve that they can't play here either it's not safe why just a while ago he says the wind knocked down some of those large boards someone could have been hurt very easily no this is not a safe place to play anyway Jimmy is probably waiting they'd better hurry Jimmy is raking in his backyard a yard is usually a safe place to be if we help keep it safe Jimmy drops the rake when he sees his friends is this safe someone might trip over the rake or even worse step on the sharp teeth he picks up the rake so nobody will get hurt Jimmy's mother says he may go now and play with his friends where shall they go Jimmy knows a place where they can play safely it's a playground in a park near Jimmy's house Steve knows what he'd like to do climb the monkey bars Jimmy's trying the swings notice how he gets off he doesn't jump before he gets off he makes sure the swing is almost stopped one of Steve's shoes has become untied he'll tie it before he climbs up again a loose shoelace can make you trip Bobby has found some Broken Glass near the sandbox he picks it up very carefully so he doesn't cut himself he'll put it where it belongs in the trash basket but even in safe places like a playground accidents can happen so everyone should always be careful time to go home Bobby and Steve promise to be home by 5:00 and they will they'll see Jimmy in school tomorrow at home Bobby tells his mother what a good time he had she's pleased that Bobby can take care of himself and can be trusted to follow the rules of safety safy you can follow the same rules that Bobby did for your safety after [Music] school I think about now how cell phones smartphones have changed this Dynamic uh the idea of like finding a telephone calling your parents your mom and say hey I'm not coming home cuz I'm playing blah blah blah um all totally different now um but of course that means your kid has to have a device which they love but you know then there's all these other potential things that could happen but watching this film reminded me of a similar film made probably around the same time um by Sid Davis I've shown this film in the past but this is a reminder of how same information but man different approach here's Live and Learn featuring Sid Davis's daughter Running With Scissors enjoy [Music] [Music] children come and go in this hospital every day the following scenes show some of the most common accidents that happened to kids because they did first and thought last they ended up in an ambulance like the one here and here are some facts not very many people know more children are crippled or killed by accidents in their home or neighborhood than all the diseases like polio TB and heart trouble put together tell that to your mom and dad tonight they'll really be surprised for instance we know that every boy and girl should know how to swim uh-oh that girl wants to have some fun looks like she's telling her friend to jump on Johnny when he comes up from his [Applause] dive yep that's what she told him to do all right that's a good trick it worked out just like she planned wait a minute something's wrong with Johnny of course tricks don't always turn out as we think they will like this one for instance lucky for Johnny that P knew enough to drag him out of the pool and give him artificial respiration at once had they waited until they got to the hospital to do it like this poor boy it would have been too late the trick almost had an unhappy ending Another Bad Thing to fool around with is fire as you all know a campfire can be a lot of fun but it can also be very dangerous but Bill just isn't thinking about danger it sure makes you mad when you try and try and still can't get a blaze started ah it seems that David here has a good idea probably some more matches although if he hasn't started it by now mm if that's gas in that can he's going to be awfully sorry maybe one of his Pals will stop him from throwing that gas on the fire no no one said a word they're too busy concentrating on the fire to think about what might happen and did happen so another bad accident it doesn't always take gasoline to make fun dangerous with noow you can burn fires with carelessness fires will burn you here's another cause for accidents happening while you're playing for instance this looks simple doesn't it and it was until one of the boys decided to jump whoops there he goes he still seems to be in one piece he said it was easy nothing to it tells his friend to jump but this boy isn't so sure come on Mike Don't Be Afraid jump it's not high so Mike not wanting to appear afraid takes a deep breath and jumps unfortunately he landed the wrong way his friend is very sorry but being sorry won't mend a broken leg so the hospital gets another patient jumping from high places isn't smart and pushing somebody when he doesn't expect it can be very dangerous walking on Picket Fences climbing around old buildings may be fun but it can also put boys and girls in the hospital and that isn't so much fun here's something else to look out for playing in the streets ball games are fun but they should also be safe that's what playgrounds and schoolyards are for for if he keeps his eye on the ball he can't look out for traffic too neither a friend's warning or the car's breakes prevented an accident or saved this boy and again the ambulance brings in the victim of an accident that never should have happened Bob and Ed went canoeing at the lake one afternoon it was a lovely day peaceful and quiet perfect for boating too quiet for Ed I guess cuz all of a sudden he shouted to Bob to look at something on the shore Bob did something no one should ever do stand up in a canoe this gave Ed a chance to start rocking the canoe and scare poor Bob but once again what started out as an innocent joke ended up in something more serious it's a good thing Ed remembered what he'd learned in the Boy Scouts and threw Bob a safety seat in time to prevent a drowning guns caus some of the worst accidents and the most tragic blindness such a gun is not only illegal for boys in most cities but is a possible killer and crippler in their hands he's a good shot but look what happened it's very easy to put out an eye with a BB gun or with pieces of flying glass has happened in this case is it worth this boys and girls supposing this were you just getting a half look at the world because someone didn't know how to use a gun safely now take the case of this young lady cutting out paper dolls in the safety of her own home doesn't seem possible an accident could happen here does it when she heard her father at the door she got excited she'd just have time to hide behind the door and surprise him like she did every night she jumped to her feet this time it was different she tripped and fell on the scissors and the doctor has another patch-up job to do it's always dangerous to run with scissors or any other sharp pointed object in the hand it's also dangerous to climb on anything while holding scissors if you fell you could cut yourself or poke out an eye now how could anything possibly happen to these boys let's go out to the edge of the cliff his friends know better but Nick feels like exploring he doesn't stop to think that the fence was put up for a reason no Nick doesn't stop to think until it's too late the boy learned what fences were for the hard way and he's not out of trouble yet but lucky for Nick he's not alone one of his friends goes for help and and comes back with the best friend a kid could have when trouble occurs a policeman the officer goes into action fast and the job of rescue begins that's another thing to remember boys and girls whenever you get into real trouble go to your nearest police officer or Sheriff you'll find him our real friend in need see how the officer questions Nick to make sure he's not not hurt any place but his wrist before he carries him up the Rope he's learned his lesson and was lucky not to have been hurt more than he was you youngsters can save yourselves a lot of pain if you just stop and think listen to the advice of your parents and teachers a hospital bed isn't anywhere near as nice as your bed at home a bone that is broken in too many places may keep you from Ever playing ball again maybe figures don't mean much to you but listen try to understand because it's your life I'm talking about more than 12,500 kids die every year more than 50,000 of them are permanently crippled every year more than 1 m M 500,000 children are seriously injured every year and all of these accidents happen in your own home your own neighborhood so be careful kids too many youngsters end up in the hospital why don't you stay out of it live and learn because you are the America of [Music] tomorrow um it was pointed out to me that most of the films I'm showing today are directly related to what I've been going through so um mineral resources with stones being crushed down into little fine whatever uh films about safety uh and specifically on the bike and uh just in general uh and you know injuries sustained for that and then the film that I have uh set up on the scanner behind me this is very this is coincidental all this is coincidental uh making and repairing tubing connections so enjoy for the installation and repair of tubing connections is one of the most common jobs that a serviceman in Commercial Refrigeration is called upon to do this kind of work requires a thorough knowledge of making flared tubing joints to make a good flare the serviceman needs certain kinds of tools one to cut the tubing one to to hold it and form the flare a punch to make the flare and a file for dressing the edges be sure these tools are clean grit or file shavings may cause distortions in the flare only Refrigeration tubing is used in this work it is seamless copper tubing which has been deox ized and dehydrated by the manufacturer and to preserve it the ends are sealed before cutting and flaring the tubing must be straightened for short runs this may be done by hand longer runs may be handled by using the foot as an anchor but do not press too hard the copper is soft excessive pressure will collapse the tubing when bending copper avoid twisting always hold the roll in a vertical position since bending has a tendency to harden copper try to straighten it with as little bending as possible to save material make the mark for the cut as near as possible to the end of the tubing But be sure the Mark is made where the tube is perfectly round the standard cutting tool has a steel cutting blade and a hand clamp which regulates the pressure on the cut cutting blade be careful when clamping on the tool clamping too tightly will partially collapse the tubing making it difficult to get the flare nut on and leaving a mark on the inside tube surface which will have to be dressed before a proper flare can be made make a quarter turn on the adjusting screw then one complete revolution of the tool another quarter turn and another complete Revolution repeat in this order until a perfect cut is made this is a good cut because the tubing is still round and the edges will require little dressing next to remove the sharp edges made by the cut the inside of the tubing must be dressed or reamed remember while reaming hold the open end down so that filings will not fall into the tubing and be careful not to apply too much pressure the copper is soft and the cut can easily be ruined complete the dressing with the flat file the flare nut has a seat into which the flare will fit this seat holds the flare securely to the desired connection always slide flare nut on before making the flare this flare block will make flares for various sizes of tubing select the hole which is correct for the size tub in you are using this bevel is the form that shapes the flare allow the tubing to extend above the block approximately the width of the bevel it is advisable at first to measure the tubing length that should extend beyond the block but after a little experience in making flares this may be done by ey now we are ready to make the flare see that the punch is clean before using Center the tool and then apply refrigerant oil this prevents wear on the punch and eliminates the possibility of scoring the inside of the flare turn so that pressure will be applied slowly and uniformly the feel of this procedure comes with practice undue pressure like this will harden the tubing and thin out the flare wall which will result in a weak joint if not enough tubing is extended beyond the flare block a short flare will result a rolled or beaded Edge thin on one side thick on the other is characteristic of the short flare a short flare has insufficient surface for a gastight seal if too much tubing extends beyond the flare block the flare will have a rolled Edge and it will be too large to enter the flare nut without forcing if the nut is forced on copper filings will gather on the threads and when the fitting is tightened a leak will result making a flare oversized may cause the flare to split especially if the tubing has been hardened tubing which is too hard can be annealed or softened by using a torch the flame is applied until the tubing becomes a cherry red after it has been allowed to cool naturally in air the anal tubing is cleaned to remove oxidation now a perfect flare can be made when finished dress the flare trim the edges file the block marks and the flare will be perfect the flare nut slides over the flare easily and will make a perfect gas tight connection leaks may occur in tubing that has seen considerable service or sometimes the tubing may be seriously damaged as in this case where it is not convenient to replace the entire length of tubing a sweat connector may be soldered to the brake as in all soldering clean the surfaces before applying flux then place the sweat connector in position for soldering to protect the wall place a sheet of asbest in back of the tubing before the heat is applied when the job is finished pull the cond do it down over the tubing remember that when cutting a light firm pressure will suffice a quarter turn on the clamp nut then one complete revolution of the tool the process should be repeated until a perfect cut is made the cut must be dressed to remove sharp edges always hold the tubing open and down to prevent cuting from falling inside put the flare nut on before clamping the tubing in the flare block and be sure it extends beyond the block the width of the bevel always oil the punch turn so that pressure will be applied slowly and uniformly remember when a flare is correctly made it will fit without forcing and a Gastite connection can be made a good service man soon learns that making and repairing tubing connections is one of the important skills of his trade film where I feel like a soundtrack with bongos or um something oh my God can you imagine like it's like now we're going to watch this film and uh by the end of it everybody's like asleep thankfully I had some coffee uh let's see so much to show you um uh so let's draw with crayons enjoy it's fun to make original things in art class there are so many interesting things you can do there is such a wide variety of materials you can work with have you ever worked with crayons do you know that there are many different ways to use crayons let's look around and see what some of these boys and girls are doing with crayons Jay has an original pencil sketch he brought from home now he is coloring it with crayons it's a picture of his pet cat watch how he uses the crayon little short Strokes to show how the cat's fur lies that's one way to draw with crayons but now let's see how else we can use crayons Mary is making an attractive cover for the Box in which she keeps her collection of buttons this is her design for the cover an all over pattern of buttons but see these un usual crayons and the brush and water just what is Mary going to do with them this looks like drawing with any other sort of crayon doesn't it but Mary is using a special kind of crayon that can be shaded with water notice how she holds the crayon she can press fairly hard without breaking it when she finished is coloring her design Mary will be ready to use the water but right now let's see what the others are doing Fred is lettering a poster for his Scout Troop the heavy poster board provides a padded surface so he can press hard with his crayon but he must hold the crayon properly supporting it with his thumb and fingers or it may break see what broad strong lines Fred can make with these crayons it's easy to do posters and lettering this way isn't it now let's go over and see what dolly is doing this is a blouse she got for her birthday she likes it but don't you think it's rather plain can she use crayons to decorate the blouse let's see she Begins by putting cardboard inside the blouse so she'll have a smooth surface for drawing then she fastens it down to her drawing board so the cloth won't wrinkle up on her what sort of decoration will Dolly draw on her blouse here are some original designs she has developed in class which one do you like best this is the one that Dolly chooses now a piece of paper with a hole cut out to work through to protect the blahs from being soiled and Dolly is ready to draw see how carefully she begins she wants the design just so we'll see Dolly's blouse later when it's more nearly finished now who else is drawing with crayons Andy is he's working pretty hard at it isn't he careful Andy you'll rub right through the paper uh-oh Andy is having his troubles Another Broken CR well let's leave Andy and go back to the others who are getting along better with their crayons what do you think Jay's cat picture will look like by now here it is the cat is finished and look at the design of the rug how does Jay get this effect let's watch see how he's blending two colors leaving blank paper between his Strokes with one color and then filling in with Strokes of a different color here we can see the separate colors but when we step back and see the whole picture the colors blend together sometimes Jay uses dots instead of lines to blend colors many separate dots of different colors close together but they seem like just one color from a distance so Jay is coming along well with his drawing and how is Mary doing with the cover for her button box she's getting ready to brush water over her painting crayons let's see what happens see how the colors blend and smooth together yet the strong lines still show through this is a good way to blend color isn't it the Blended colors look transparent almost like watercolors Mary's overall pattern is going to be very pretty Fred's poster is nearly finished Fred has been working hard on it but he thinks it needs a little more color then it will really attract attention good posters do that he decides to add a design at the bottom first a broad stroke with a crayon of one color then he changes to a crayon of another color and makes a neat stroke lapping over the first these colors blend together too don't they and Fred's design is making his poster more attractive well Fred is nearly finished let's see how dolly is coming along with her blouse here it is and it isn't a very plain blouse anymore is it in fact the design seems almost too sharp and bright don't you think more delicate colors would look better why do you suppose Dolly drew it this way well in a moment we'll find out meanwhile look at poor Andy he hasn't had much fun today and you can see why he pressed too hard and smeared his colors together this is one way not to draw with crayon maybe next time Andy will try drawing a different way but look here's Dolly with her blouse what does she want to do with it what are her plans she is going to finish her blouse in the whole Mech room where where she will press it to make the colors stay in she puts paper Under and Over the blouse to keep the colors from running where they don't belong for this job the iron should be set at rayon or the coolest temperature setting meanwhile Jay has finished his drawing remember how he Blended different colored strokes and dots and making the rug and how he used short Strokes to draw the cats fur hasn't he made an interesting picture remember how Mary brushed water over her painting crayons to blend the colors don't you think the overall pattern is good for the cover of her button bugs remember how Fred used crayons in making his poster for the boy Scott paper Drive how he drew bold broad lines with hard flat crayons and how he made the design at the bottom don't you think his poster will attract attention and here's Dolly wearing her blouse now that she has ironed it the colors are softer you see some of the color came off on the paper when she ironed it don't you think the design makes the plain blouse more attractive so now we know many different ways of using crayons to create beautiful things are there other ways why yes look here is an interesting way to use crayons in arts and crafts and there are many other ways to use crayons in your original work why not try some of these ways in your art class or at your own [Music] home or did uh it sound like she just kept saying blah like it's blahs color up your your blahs make it more exciting your blahs as opposed to blouse which is how I say it but maybe I'm saying it wrong I don't know maybe is this does this warrant adding to the the list of uh interesting pronunciations of things uh along with protein uh apparatus uh ethanol uh membran Montana ovulation uh Uranus uh geminy vegetables abdomen um reptils Puma does that uh cck uh um does blah um does that deserve to be there yes okay Blas Blas all right um thanks for tuning in today very much appreciate it uh I'm sorry I was reading the comments delayed but uh I'm sorry uh Taran and Rick for your losses uh it's hard hard time um but uh you know give yourselves break time to grieve and um you know telling people what's going on is is hard work it's emotionally draining um and so give yourself that time to for yourself to grieve um before you spend all that energy on other people so we'll be back tomorrow is it's Wednesday right yeah we'll be back tomorrow today it's really nice out uh so I'm going to go outside and get a little bit more sunburn like I did uh on Sunday
