this and then when I typed it in it's the Google Sheets is set up to tell me when I it it kind of italicized it and says oh you've shown this before I'm like so that's annoying so annoying anyways I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and man I'm going to type try to type this one in because maybe this one is uh uh has been shown I'm looking I'm looking all right I guess it hasn't all right at least it's not in the my spreadsheet uh which that's what I have to go by so anyways this is uh bail handling with no labor with no hand labor so bail handling with no hand labor this is exciting for those of you who have a farm uh and grow hay and straw [Music] enjoy farm hand first in farm Materials Handling offers you the greatest labor Saver in the history of hay handling a 100% mechanical method of handling hay bales from field to feed loock this simple logical four-step system has not only mechanized hay handling but has generally reduced it to a oneman job the first step is the Gathering and arranging of the Bales with the bail accumulator the Bales are arranged in a package of of eight as they come off the Bor from farmand mechanically built stack which do you suppose provides the best hay now let's see how the stacking is done the stack is started by placing two rows of eight packs about 6 in apart as a foundation to the desired length of the stack after several layers are up the stability of any stack back is improved by using the tractor as a ram to Tamp the ends into even tighter compaction notice that as the stack is being built the layers are moved slightly toward the middle so that by the fifth or sixth layer the eight packs are buted up against one another in the center this gives a sound self-supporting base with a careful operator and good Bales this stack can be built without getting off the tractor how does this compare with the way you stack your [Music] hay another method suitable for all types of Bales utilizes a guide core in starting the stack the extra time taken to lay this core can be considered good insurance against a tumbled stack the core is laid with the first layer running crosswise to the length of the stack with the remaining layers going lengthwise this method of stacking is excellent for inexperienced operators or for the expert who has just bought his Bale Fork attachment in mechanical stacking the Bales fit together with the texture intertwined a feature that cannot be obtained by hand stacking because only tractor power can pack bales that [Music] tightly this Farm handbuilt core stack of slippery barley straw owned by a senator from grass Lodge Montana with stod 100 mph winds there is more to the system than just hauling from the field and stacking after the hay is put up of course it must be either fed or sold the feeder can utilize the fork as they're doing in many Western areas to move veils from the stack as needed into the feed lot if the stack is located any distance from the livestock the baale wagon can be loaded in a very short time and the Bales hauled to the lot here they're placed into the bunk or feed rack with the fork without touching a [Music] bail for the commercial grower savings are not only realized in the initial harvesting and handling of the hay but also in loading the truck and carriers with this mechanical [Music] method thus we see that the farmand bail handling system is more than Machinery it is a method of hay farming and handling A system that will enable one man to put up hay in large quantities with without extra Health extra wage expense and extra time it gives the hay grower added muscle and speed to do a big job with no more effort expended than is necessary to drive the touch [Applause] [Music] soon he reaches out away from you into the world about him and as a wise parent you encourage him in his little Voyages of Discovery now be you run over and play with the kids he has so much to learn how to get along with others how the game goes and perhaps he doesn't seem very bright about things touch on V touch [Music] on let's make no here a small B you go itad okay I can't see you so you can't see meing he hasn't quite cut on yet but don't worry he'll learn better for as children grow new powers and insights and abilities emerge as quietly and easily as on a summer's night first one star comes out then another he is learning even while he's asleep tomorrow he may open his eyes on a world where he can do something he has never managed before muscle and nerve and tendon are knitting and strengthening this is the Miracle of Life and growth sometimes of course his growing gets a little disturbing at 5 through for good with home and family and out on his own in a wide Strange World what are those queer [Music] things what's over the [Music] bridge why are those men making that noise what are they doing where am I where am I now hey kid do you want to get yourself killed what's the matter with you are you lost yes life is pretty complicated and difficult and dangerous if you're only 5 years old you have a lot of learning to do before you're ready for it but to help you get ready you have inherited from somewhere that marvelous though sometimes bother some curiosity about life in the world around [Music] you we have schools to channel that Curiosity into useful and exciting learning your child will continue to learn from nature and his own experience but above all from the time time he starts school he will be guided by a teacher for hundreds of weeks and thousands of days it has been said that the whole art of teaching is only the art of Awakening the Natural Curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards yes how high up is the sky I haven't time to be bothered with silly questions did you finish the work I gave you no get busy then only two absent today maybe they're the lucky ones a good teacher knows that she is dealing not only with the routines of school but also with the minds and Souls of little people at the growing time we know a lot more now than we used to about children and how they grow we know that the experiences of childhood May twist a mind into dangerous channels what's the matter with Mike what's got into him lately Mike Mike she could of course shrug it off as not her business children do have their little ups and [Music] downs but she is a realist who knows that in this frightened weary mistrustful little boy there is developing a problem which she must approach with sympathy and [Music] understanding why did you run away Mike let's go for a walk come [Music] on in her work of guiding children to maturity she will meet so many problems the timid child the unwanted child the overaggressive or a mic struggling against an intolerance he doesn't understand they say I can't play with [Music] them they say I'm po I hate those kids he has learned to fear and hate the children around him he could grow up to hate everyone the little Troubles of childhood nonsense [Music] what can the teacher do to help him and start him growing again towards a happy and healthy [Music] adjustment sometimes she will have to look beyond the school for help just as she would consult a doctor if someone were ill but usually with time and love and patience she can give him back courage and faith in himself through using the talent he possesses his English may still be imperfect but he can [Music] [Applause] [Music] sing not to bra be [Music] [Music] not to bra [Music] be [Music] you [Music] she knows how to turn the near tragedy of one child into lessons and living for all now shut your eyes and think how many people do you think there are in the whole world a million no there are about 2,000 million they talk in different different ways and look different but the differences aren't the important thing you know everybody in the world really wants the same things a place to live enough to eat and to get them all people have to work together that means we must respect other people do you know what respect means well we'll talk about that some other time here is a teacher with a true conception of her work and its importance who looks beyond the walls of her classroom and Beyond the class of this year she asks herself always a final question and the only question that really matters in relation to Mike and Mary and Joe what kind of men and women can she help them to [Music] become what opportunities are the children in your community getting here's what happened in our town Miss G came here last fall after a year at normal school she found a fairly Pleasant boarding house and was looking forward to teaching for she liked [Music] children it was her first school but she was confident and eager and wasn't afraid of work let's see what happened to [Music] [Applause] her have you finished your map yet no Miss G I think she's crazy keep quiet had she had adequate training and experience she might have been able to cope with the situation but as it was in no time Miss G's classes were more than she could handle utter waste waste of Minds waste of energies waste of precious opportunities Miss G is not alone thousands of teachers leave teaching every year other thousands are acting as teachers without any professional training at all many of these are still in their teens knowing hardly more than the boys and girls they are in charge of is this all teaching is [Music] worth Miss G left at the end of [Music] June [Music] now then try to find a w in the [Applause] [Music] sky I see it I can see it that's called a constellation and its name is copia how far away is the Moon well I'm going to ask you a question how far is it from the school to Hansen store 3 miles mil mil and how long does it take you to walk there oh about an hour well the moon up there is over 240,000 M away tomorrow I want you to tell me how long it will take you to walk to to the Moon supposing there was a straight path Right From Here and Now look up there follow my finger that star is 200 billion miles away how does they know how does anybody know anything as we explore the universe further and further we find our knowledge always expanding always changing it is the teacher who has the enormous and rewarding respons possibility of transmitting the best of this to Future Generations but they are those who would Dam up this expanding stream of [Music] knowledge nowadays they're spending too much money on Frills I can't agree with those fancied ideas teach them to spare teach them to read teach them to figure that's the way that I learned in my early days in school yes sir it seems only yesterday since I was in school myself but it wasn't yesterday it was 60 years ago and that might have been you Mr [Music] James first position class now we'll review today's lessons Wallace how long does it take to cross the Atlantic Ocean sit up straight Mary oh my father came over in 2 months but that was 30 years ago Wallace nowadays a fast chip can make it in 3 weeks you have to keep up with the [Music] times how far can the human voice carry Lavinia 5 miles maybe oh no linia not even the loudest and strongest voice could carry as far as back you see sound waves get lost in the air very [Music] quickly there'll be a concert from the [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that was right 60 years ago perhaps the time has a way of changing things today that same teacher would be introducing her class to new realities we've all had a chance to look at the globe this morning and I think we realize now how close we are in time to the rest of the world airlanes can take us to Japan in less than 2 days want to show you some pictures of some Japanese children some in other countries too they're your neighbors now what happens to them and what they do makes a difference to you want you to think about that while you're looking at the film it's the projector ready Tom yes Miss Brown will you draw the curtains please and turn out the lights new forces are abroad in the world that will affect every child's life children in other countries live differently and think differently and yet they must be understood by our children will your children learn to harness the world's ever growing Powers more important than that will they learn to use them constructively for techniques and machines are Mindless only well-developed minds trained to compassion and vision can make these Powers useful more and more parents are demanding that teaching really become a profession they are realizing the special qualities the energy and Imagination required of good teachers if they are to lead our children out towards an understanding of the world around [Music] them friends Romans countrymen let be your ears I come to bur C are not too prais to throw light on Modern Problems the good teacher draws upon the your house of the past he knows how to breathe life into the greatest of its Treasures oh what a fall was there my country then I and you and all of us fell down whilst bloody treason flourished over us oh now You Weep I perceive you feel the Vint of pity these are gracious drugs kind Souls what weep you when you but Behold our Caesar's vesture wounded look you here here is himself marred as you see with traitors now what was really happening here under the cloak of beautiful language do you think Anthony was telling the truth or was he twisting the truth By ignoring important facts that mob it has been said that a teacher affects eternity he can never tell where his influence stops we have seen it with the greatest of Humanity's teachers teachers teachers who have influenced whole civilizations and changed the course of history what about our teachers how are we to attract more of the specially gifted into teaching how are we to keep them there when we have trained them are we prepared to pay what good teaching is worth here is a challenge for everyone for the prospective teacher and for for the parent will all our children get the best at school who will satisfy their need like the Goofus and Gallant teacher I like uh the kids it it's it's of a time and then that teacher who suddenly shows like atomic test footage oh my God it's insane uh so let's go back to our friends at coronette uh and learn about the United States in the 20th century 1920 to 1932 enjoy [Music] 1919 a glorious year for many American families transport ships were bringing American troops home after their victories on the European continent they and their allies had won the world war and there was great re joing in cities like New York World War I was over and yet beneath the gayety was a mood of deep concern President woodro Wilson returning from Allied peace conferences overseas embodied that concern even as the welcoming salutes were being fired President Wilson grappled with a grave problem how to convince the American people that they must continue to take part in international Affairs even though the actual fighting was over but Americans wildly Delirious with the war's end were in no mood to listen to their sober president he might concern himself with Europe but after years of austerity and sacrifice they desired little more than a return to the good old days they they listened respectfully enough to their wartime president as he stumped the nation striving to Rally the people's support for the League of Nations the league was an ideal on which Wilson was willing to stake his own great popularity a plan he felt would guarantee peace yet the majority of Americans much to Wilson's disappointment withheld their support within a year the president's fight for the league was ended the grueling schedule of speeches in support of the league had taken their toll of the president's Health by 1920 the effect of his unsuccessful Crusade for United States support of the League of Nations was clearly written on the president's face why had the American people refused to support Wilson's foreign policy to simplify matters let's say that Americans wanted to forget forget the war and its restrictions they wanted to return to the good old pre-war days that Wilson's liberal Democrat Administration and a World War had seemingly interrupted in short they wanted a social and political change the Republican candidate in the presidential election of 1920 most Americans agreed was was the right man to Institute such a change Warren G Harding was neither political theorist nor Crusader his promise to the people was simple and clear-cut a return to normaly to the way things had been before the war the public rallied to Harding's promise here at last was a candidate pledged to conservative government pledged to limited Federal controls in personal and business Affairs pledged to the American tradition of proud individualism elected by a resounding majority Harding set out for his inauguration this was a truly symbolic moment for here together were the Victorious Harding the determined dedicated conservative and the ailing retiring Wilson the intellectual liberal in front of the capital traditional site of presidential inaugurations Harding received the oath of office and sounded the keynote of his policies by saying that he wanted the best Minds to advise him true to his aims Harding recruited many distinguished private citizens to serve his administration and several did so ay Charles Evans Hughes secretary of state was one of the most capable in 1921 Hughes was responsible for an International Conference among several military Powers at which a treaty for voluntary curtailment of Naval construction was signed this treaty seemed a practical way to avoid another International war in domestic affairs Congress passed a national budget act putting the government on a unified budget for the first time such conservative measures were actively supported by Secretary of the Treasury Andrew melon who believed in cutting the federal budget reducing personal taxes and raising tariffs under President Harding's Administration then the tempo of American Life did return to the promised normaly at least for a while Americans returned to peacetime activities there was more time for for leisure now and for entertainment signs of the new Prosperity could be seen in almost every segment of the economy employment levels climbed as manufacturing and other business activities increased this increase was due in great part to technological advances perfected during the war and which were now now being applied to the production of consumer goods from electric light bulbs to Automobiles and automobile parts mass production on assembly lines meant a greater flow of goods with the stepped up economy income for most Americans was reaching new highs under conservative government there was one group however not sharing in this Prosperity farmers were in economic trouble overproduction plummeting food prices and inflation had forced many farmers into poverty or bankruptcy here then was a hard core of discontent with conservative government further criticism of the Harding Administration was being voiced by political liberals like Al Smith governor of New York but all criticism was temporarily suspended in August 1923 as a shocked Nation heard of the sudden death of its president grief stricken the nation marked time as the flag draped coffin of President Harding was moved in stately procession down Pennsylvania Avenue to the capital yet even as Americans mourned they were learning details of shocking misconduct in Harding's Administration charges of graft were brought against Secretary of the Interior Albert B fall one of Harding's closest Associates he had secretly leased Naval oil reserves to private developers thus precipitating an incident newspapers vehemently exposed as The Teapot Dome scandal then there were the cases of Attorney General Harry M Dy who had used his office for personal gain and alien property custodian Thomas W Miller who was to be accused and convicted for the misappropriation of certain stocks owned by aliens still several presidential appointees men like Secretary of State Hughes Secretary of the Treasury melon and Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover had proved honest and competent with such men it was difficult to condemn outright Harding's Administration few doubted the honesty and competency of Vice President Kelvin kulage who vigorously completed Harding's term of office and continued to pursue the cause of conservative government kage so successfully restored Integrity in Washington that he easily won the presidency for himself in the election of 1924 kage's inauguration meant the continuation of golden Prosperity economic indicators such as rates of steel production number of construction starts levels of employment all pointed upwards there were plenty of factors that kept the economy booming in the mid 1920s radio was fast developing as a means of communication and entertainment and as a medium of advertising the prosperous American public was exhorted on all sides to buy not only the necessities of everyday life but fashionable clothing as well then twoo there was a whole new array of improved appliances on the market as time went on increasing numbers of products were sold on credit as wages failed to keep up with prices installment buying became more common in the purchase of automobiles the Motorcar industry boomed production increased from 1 and a half million cars in 1921 to More Than 3 million in 1924 mass production was lowering the cost of automobiles making them available to more Americans here was the beginning of the automobile industry which was to be a key factor in the American economy more cars led to the start of a paved highway system that would eventually span the country another Transportation industry still in its infancy was Air transport here was a further example of how science Industry and commerce were joining hands to strengthen and build the economy to most Americans the sky seemed the only limit to their prosperity as industrial profits increased the stock market attracted much public interest month after month stock prices Rose reflecting the people's confidence in a continuing Prosperity by 1928 Americans had become expert at interpreting the cryptic symbols of stock tickers stock could also be purchased on credit or margin for a fraction of their cash value in the hope that they could be sold later at higher prices even people of average means read stock market reports hoping to build small sums into fortunes if the boom continued but there were danger signs not reflected in the rising stock quotations continuing overproduction of food stuffs was one sign that all was not right with the economy Farmers grew larger crops in an effort to keep Pace with the rising prices they paid and the falling prices they received even so the conservative administration of president kulage had a wide base of popular support kulage did not choose to run for another term so the delegates to the Republican Convention of 1928 nominated Herbert Hoover well-known administrator and planner with a fine record in public office Hoover launched a vigorous campaign across the country and the sizes of the crowds that came to cheer him indicated the people's satisfaction with conservative government the nation Hoover declared was close to abolishing poverty and continuing conservative government might well mean achieving that goal most people seem to agree of quite another opinion was liberal Democratic candidate Al Smith this popular governor of New York showed surprising political strength but in 1928 Herbert Hoover was elected to succeed president kulage the philosophy of conservative government would continue for at least four more years under President Hoover for a time after Hoover's inauguration the economic news continued to look promising stock prices continued to rise and many investors happily awaited the day when stock prices reached their High Point the day they'd sell their paper fortunes for real wealth but from the financial district along Wall Street in New York City Signs of economic instability began to appear in October 1929 as the market started to Sag by the end of October a continuous wave of selling had plunged the market into a decline of value estimated at $15 billion Panic set in on the floor of the stock exchanges as the slump in prices wiped out the savings of countless Americans the actual causes behind the market crash are difficult to determine even today but one thing is certain it set off the greatest depression the country had ever known as business activity dwindled in the months after the crash more and more factories cut production or shut down on unemployment soared people's confidence in conservative government was badly shaken as the ranks of the jobless increased the burden of nearly a decade of uncontrolled economic boom and inflation had fallen upon president Hoover's shoulders the president counseled that the effects of the crash would be only temporary if public concern could be kept from deteriorating into hysteria to do this he proposed to Congress certain Aid measures including loans to Industry and a federal Farm program but the situation had already deteriorated crowds of unemployed milled about aimlessly on the streets others without the price of a meal waited in missionary soup and bread lines and still others clamored outside banks for their savings the banks too had been caught in the plummeting economy and could not pay their depositors the 1931 bank failures together with chronic unemployment had shaken the faith of the people in conservative government this way of life was certainly not the prosperous life they believed had been promised them hopelessness gave way to desperation early in 1932 thousands of militant unemployed singing shouting and chanting protest slogans descended upon Washington to present personally their demands for economic relief to the government fearful that the crowd's emotions might erupt into violence a presidential order kept the protesters under armed surveillance this incident was symbolic of the way the people were now turning away from the conservative philosophy of government they had favored so long once again they desired a change in the Democratic party a new liberal leader was emerging as presidential candidate in 1932 Franklin D Roosevelt Roosevelt promised recovery through new methods of priming the economy to many people he was a warm Magnetic these Powers would include new tax measures new social reforms New Economic controls in short a new deal and the public responded overwhelmingly the election of Roosevelt to succeed President Hoover meant that the public had temporarily rejected the conservative philosophy of government [Music] 12 years of conservative government from 1920 to 1932 a conservative era had come to an end [Applause]
