working with fractions your piece of Pi is a fraction e e hello everybody this is Skip Al summer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show um yeah it's piay uh 3.14 etc etc uh I've shown sh the the film meaning of pie so many times that I decided to take a pass and actually go with what everybody else is trying to celebrate with pi day which is films clips about Pi um I've also shown a bunch of films about Pi for previous piay so um this was something I was trying to I I basically went to my stock footage clip site and kind of entered in pies and saw what came up anyhow hope everybody's having a good day today um I realize I haven't set up anything show wise oh crap um yeah uh distracted by a bad beta deck so I am trying to let's do this real quick everything's going to be on the fly on Pi Day uh let's watch uh Pioneer boy of the Midwest [Music] enjoy do you know what this is it's a school in the midwest built of logs by the father of the pioneer children do you know what that noise is it's the sound of the children studying their lessons School Master Higgins makes each one talk good and loud so he can tell who is really studying anyone who doesn't study may feel the touch of the whip this is Lucy Wilson she is studying her numbers of three and three is six the sum of three and three is six this is Wilbur black he never had a chance to go to school where he lived before so he's just beginning b c d don't you think it would be hard to teach different things to so many children at once this is David Wilson Lucy Wilson's brother read and write and try to learn and try to learn with all their might boys must learn to spell read and write and try to learn with all their mind then they will David is lucky his mother can read and she has taught him some reading at home whale tiger whale tiger School Master Higgins will teach here for several months and then move on to another Frontier school he has few books and things to teach with his pen is a quill from a goose [Music] feather all right School's Out Mr Higgins does the best he can for these children whose father pay him some children cannot go to school because their fathers have no money to pay the school Master public school is not yet free David Wilson is going off by himself his sister Lucy is going home and Mr Higgins will go with her part of the school Master's pay is his keep and He will sleep and eat at the Wilson house for two weeks one week for each child Lucy and Dave Dave is on his way to his favorite fishing place he told his mother he'd try to catch some fish today for the family to eat but on the way there's much to see look there's a porcupine better not get too close to him d knows the forest he sees things that others might miss now what do you think he has found it's an aasum a baby all by itself how did it become lost where can the mother be if Dave could catch the mother his family would have roast pum for supper and father could use the skin maybe she's up in a tree somewhere or maybe down by the stream where is Old Mrs possum there's Mrs possum she's easy to catch not fast like rabbits and squirrels what a bundle of meat and fur to bring home and surprise the family but what will happen to all the baby possums if their mother is taken should he take her there you go baby maybe Dave will catch another possum one that doesn't have any little ones hang on this time baby here's where Dave likes to fish he has no fishing rod but he'll use a fresh green Vine from a tree and a bent pin that's something a Pioneer boy learns early to make do with what he has to know just how to use a twig on the vine and how to tie a knot in it without breaking it he learns the best place to find bait a grub or a worm he hopes to catch a big catfish to take home to the family the family lives in this log house about a mile from the school Dave's father built it from logs in the forest and Dave helped to fill the cracks with mud Dave's mother is making soap pouring water through the lie in the wood ashes there's Lucy with school Master Higgins home from school in time to help with the work mother needs some water not Creek Water she uses to make soap but spring water for drinking mother knows that Mr Higgins is moving in with them today she will show him where he is to sleep and after school hours he too will help with the work around the farm on her way to the spring Lucy passes along the Wilson Wheatfield a few years ago this was part of the forest father chopped down the trees and pulled out the stumps father must work hard to raise enough crops for a growing family and he wonders if he should move the family farther west where they say there's better farming Lucy tells father that Mr Higgins is going to come out soon to help him with the work and that David has gone to the stream to try to catch some fish but the fish don't seem to be biting today what's that sound it sounds like yes it is a swarm of bees where do you think Dave is going he's trying to follow the bees can you hear them no but there's a blue jay calling is it a blue jay or could it be an Indian making the sound of a blue jay trying to bring David closer but no Indians left this part of the Midwest a few years ago or did they there that's no Indian that's old Mr Blue Jay himself if only he'd be quiet so Dave could hear the bees is that yes there's the sound of the bees that way no not that way not past that rattlesnake better go any other way even if it means losing the trail of the bees what's that yes there they are Dave can see them now and you know what's in that Bee Tree so does Dave he can almost taste the honey already he can't do much today by himself but he'll Mark the Spot later he can bring father and school Master Higgins too they can drive the bees away with smoking torches and when they cut down that Bee Tree they'll have heaps of sweet honey what's more they'll have beeswax for making candles but that's for another day by looking at the sun through the forest Dave can tell how low it is it's getting late in the afternoon he'd better be getting home father will disapprove if he's late but now what berries the family needs fresh fruit at home but it's late you should be home by now the berries are too good to miss this won't take long he won't be very late getting home at the Wilson house father is just coming in from the Wheat Field School Master Higgins has been splitting rails for a fence to keep the Sheep In Father appreciates Mr higgins's help for last week the Wolves got one of the Lambs that belonged to a neighbor mother has sent Lucy to tell them to come in to supper mother knows that if she didn't her husband would be apt to start another job there's always work to be done on a pioneer farm Lucy has helped mother fix a good meal in honor of the visitor there's deer meat stew bubbling in the iron pot and cooking on the flat Stones there's Johnny cake made of ground corn corn is plentiful and is part of almost every meal as Hony corn mush or scrapple everything is ready for supper everyone is ready for supper everyone except Dave where can he be here comes Dave with his cap full of berries so Dave arrives home as father is saying and make us thankful O Lord for the goodness of thy forests and thy Fields amen well David Dave knows he should have come home sooner he was really thinking of the family they need the berries and the honey from that Bee Tree too they all feel better now that Dave is home after supper more wood is needed for the fireplace and that's one of Dave's responsibilities too then Dave would like some help from school Master Higgins who knows Forest lore as well as book learning Dave is making a small animal trap the woods are full of rabbits squirrels raccoons there's no need to waste the family's scarce bullets in if the animals can be trapped instead Dave knows that already he is learning the way of life on the frontier where while a man can always get help from a neighbor he must stand on his own feet and make his life in the wilderness by his own strength and courage and wit thus our American democracy found new meaning and vigor in the life of a Pioneer boy of the [Music] Midwest how idic um poor Dave who will probably die from tuberculosis or influenza uh before he turns 20 uh let's see what do we got on the scanner behind me I have film uh that I've been trying to show over last couple of days but I had to put it on a different reel because the other reel that it was on has the Hub was not something that works with the scanner really well so uh anyways uh the title I'm not 100% sure on uh it's something about rigging net rigging enjoy e [Music] [Music] l [Music] this film was produced to assist the rigger in securing the maximum use from wire rope slings and to assure safe performance wire rope slings are considered to be the most versatile most economical and one of the safest methods of coupling a hoisting device to a load that must be lifted riggers using wire rope slings must be capable of selecting the right sling and then using it properly it's often said a rigger is only as good as his tools here are some of the basic rules of rigging wear protective clothing at all times the minimum requirements should include a hard hat safety glasses gloves and safety shoes know the rated capacity of the sling be sure the sling to be used is strong enough for the job keep in mind that various hitches have different lifting capabilities sling manufacturers make charts available which show the rated capacity of slings for different hitches and fittings know the condition of all slings shackles Hooks and other lifting equipment make a careful inspection before and after each use broken wires crushed sections knots Kinks or bends May reduce the strength of the sling to a dangerous Point prevent damage slings should receive adequate care they are not indestructible bending a sling around sharp objects or a small diameter pin reduces its strength by stretching the outer strains of the cable once a sling has been damaged it will no longer share the load equally avoid unnecessary wear and abrasion surface wear may be caused by one part of a sling rubbing against another part or by pulling the sling over rough or Sharp objects which cut the outer wires when possible avoid wire-to-wire contact use eyebolts carefully many loads are fitted with eyebolts to simplify attachment of the slings eyebolts may be used if the pool is transmitted to them straight along the bolt axis use caution when the pull is at a sharp angle they are not not designed to carry a sideways pool stay clear of suspended loads a cardinal safety rule in rigging is to stay clear of any load being lifted this also means that the rigger should stand back far enough so that if the load Falls he will not be trapped should it roll or tumble maintain control use a hitch that will keep the load under control at all time a hitch that allows the load to become unbalanced or to rotate introduces the possibility of losing control and causing an accident keep the load balanced always aim to lift the load level with the crane hook directly over the center of gravity careful adjustment of the lengths of the various slings is necessary to do this but it pays off in excellent control of the load don't jerk the load lift the load with care accelerating smoothly when lifting fast acceleration or stopping can impose terrific shock loads to the sling often greater than the rated capacity of the sling always use a tagline when moving a load through the air a slight wind or twist in the cable can start the load spinning and cause loss of control watch the vertical angle the angle formed by a sling and the vertical has a definite effect on the rated capacity of the sling as the angle increases from the vertical or straight pull the amount of lifting capacity decreases a load of 2,000 lb lifted with a two-leg sling on a straight pull has 1,000 lb tension on each leg with the same load of 2,000 lb and a two-leg sling at an angle of 30° from the vertical the tension on each leg is increased to 1,155 lb if the sling angle is increased to 60° from the vertical the tension has increased to 2,000 lb on each leg when the sling angle is rigged at 85° from the vertical the tension on each leg is increased to 11,490 lb or more than 5 times the weight of the load being lifted when the sling legs must be spread to a wide vertical angle particular care is required in selecting the correct sling size use Extreme Caution when using a vertical angle greater than 60° due to low head room it may be necessary to lift a load with an excessive vertical angle stay away from this situation wherever possible but if there is no alternate the following method can be used wrap the load with multiple laps of wire rope and secure the ends with cable clips place a shackle around all the strands making sure that each leg carries its share of the divided load of the four basic hitches the simplest is the single leg hitch one eye of the sling is attached to the load at a convenient location and the other eye is placed on the lifting hook single leg hitches are dangerous for two reasons poor load control and the possibility of dropping the load the second type is the single leg choker hitch the sling is placed around the load with the eye joined to the lifting cable by the use of a shackle the shackle pin is always placed in the eye of the sling if placed on the lifting leg of the sling movement might cause the PIN to come loose when using a choker hitch the strength of The Wire Rope may be reduced by as much as 25% due to the sharp bend around the shackle a additional loss of strength will be caused by the vertical angle where the sling eye is secured to the lifting leg when using the choker hitch a sliding Hook is superior to the shackle and pin the hook has a larger radius than the shackle thus reducing the tension on the outer wires of the sling and the shearing action caused by the smaller radius of the shackle a block of wood placed between the load and the choker hitch will add some stability by providing more contact between the hitch and the load the wooden block will also reduce the vertical angle where the sling eye is fastened to the lifting line riggers sometimes use the choker hitch placed at the approximate center of gravity when this is done the load can be be easily thrown out of balance and the entire load May slide out of the hitch to reduce this danger a double wrap choker hitch will provide contact with the load for a full 360° a single leg hitch provides little control over the load and should be avoided when possible in most all cases a second sling can be used to provide better control two choker hitches if separated along the load so that the center of gravity lies between them will form a stable hitch the third type hitch is the single basket hitch even though only one sling is used two legs of the sling support the load and tension on each leg is equalized the single basket hitch is stable only when the center of gravity is below the point where the sling is attached to the load the double basket hitch is formed by the use of two slings round objects are usually more difficult to hold because of the smooth surface if a shaft or a roll is being lifted keep the wire rope behind shoulders collars or other suitable stops to prevent slippage along the smooth surface to reduce reduce the danger of the slings sliding together the vertical angle should be no more than 45° and preferably 30° or less when using a double basket hitch on wooden boxes or crates careful examination of the crate construction is necessary to avoid crushing The Wire Rope will dig into the wood at the edges of the crate and tend to keep the slings from slipping an equalizing bar may be used with a double basket hitch to reduce the tendency of the slings to slide together the equalizing bar should have Provisions to balance the load by an adjustable Center eye or the use of a cal along or chain block to support the heavy end of the load since the double basket hitch has a tendency to slide together a double wrap will add stability to prevent this slipping action and will increase control of the load being lifted the double wrap exerts pressure all around the load and ensures a full 360° contact never use a basket hitch for turning the sliding action between the wire rope and the work being turned may cause tearing of the sling and on machine pieces may cause serious damage to the finished surfaces if a piece of equipment must be turned a single or double choker hitch will grip the piece without slipping a rule of thumb to follow is to point the cable eye in a direction opposite to the direction of the turn this will keep the choker hitch tight and prevent slipping the fourth type hitch is the bridal hitch which is composed of two or more legs each leg is attached directly to the load being lifted the multiple legs give good stability plus added strength and direct attachment to the load will minimize the danger of the load slipping slings of different lengths may have to be used to keep the lifting hook directly over the center of gravity again the vertical angle of the slings must be considered when calculating their lifting capacity protection of slings and equipment is of primary importance the use of cable guards or softeners around sharp Corners will reduce serious loss of strength of the sling and possible damage to the load softeners may be fabricated from wooden blocks layers of of heavy belting or other heavy pliable material short pieces of pipe split lengthwise will form a larger radius around a sharp corner and reduce the shearing action on the sling when lifting fragile crates or equipment with a light metal housing the crushing effect caused by the slings may cause the load to collapse spreader bars made of metal or wood will overcome this side thrust and avoid damage if a wooden spreader bar is used it is suggested that the ends be notched and a bolt be placed through a hole at the base of the notch to resist splitting when using a sling to support a chain block or other hoisting device from an overhead beam an extra wrap will prevent the Sling from slipping around or along the beam by setting an oak block on the top flange and along each side of the bottom flange both the sling and beam can be protected from damage the angle from the vertical is again an important factor in selecting the proper size sling when doing any lifting that employs more than one sling leg a shackle should be used to collect the various legs the pin of the shackle should be placed in the lifting hook placing more than one part of a sling in the hook May distort the hook to the danger Point remember wear protective clothing know the rated capacity of the sling know the condition of all lifting equipment prevent damage avoid unnecessary wear and abrasion use eyebolts carefully stay clear of suspended loads maintain control keep the load balanced don't jerk the load make use of a tagline watch the vertical angle by following these basic rules of rigging sling life should be prolonged accidents should be prevented and damage to expensive equipment can be minimized safety in rigging can never be overemphasized oh my God the the only interesting thing about that film was the fact that the beginning in the end were reversed as far as the titles but holy cow that falls squarely into the that could have just been a film strip you know really it was just as interesting and just as I mean it just as tedious holy cow the amount of energy spent on that o um yeah well they're not all gems and um obviously that one wasn't um I mean we've shown some tedious stuff uh in the last couple of weeks from this uh Community College on the on the East Coast here in North Carolina uh and some of them have been great and some of them have just been like me so there you go um let's uh let's look out into the world and let's think about uh beyond our Earthly confines and let's learn some space science with uh comets meteors and planetoids enjoy the planets are the major members of our solar system moving in generally the same plane around the Sun between the planets are the minor members of our solar system comets that are visible to us only when they pass near the sun meteors or shooting stars whose glowing trails are produced when meteorites plunge into the Earth's atmosphere and produce Hot Gas clouds and the planetory small planet-like bodies that revolve about the sun reflecting its light astronomers use telescopes to photograph light reflected or produced by comets meteors and planetoids by using a spectroscope astronomers can spread the light of these bodies into a spectrum to get information about their composition astronomers use radio telescopes to study meteors by broadcasting radar waves and recording The Echoes In photographs such as this let us see now how astronomers attempt to explain some of their observations of comets meteors and planetoids generally between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter in a region called the planetoid belt we find the planetoids sometimes called asteroids about 2,000 of the larger planetoids ranging in size from about a mile to 500 mil in diameter have been officially named or numbered thousands of smaller planetoids have been observed telescopes are necessary for us to see all but the largest of the planetoids when the telescope is used to photograph the planet IDs Clockwork moves the telescope to follow the Stars across the sky on photographs made by exposing film for several hours the stars produce bright round images while elongated images called trails are produced by the moving planetoids this is the trail produced On A Photograph by the planetoid OS which sometimes comes within 15 million miles of Earth most of the planetoids stay close to the plane in which the planets move how can we explain the formation of the many small planetoids between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter where we might expect a single planet possibly the strong gravitational forces of Jupiter are responsible some scientists believe they formed this way perhaps several small bodies about the size of the largest of the planetoid formed between Mars and Jupiter then in the course of thousands of millions of years collisions occurred which produced many smaller fragments from such a series of collisions the thousands of small planetoids may have been formed these bits of planetoid debris may also be partially responsible for another kind of interplanetary Wanderer that we sometimes see flashing above us in the night sky these are the meteors or as they are often called shooting stars of course they are not stars at all most often meteors are caused by particles called meteorites that are usually not larger than grains of sand they Blaze into hot gas as they plunge into the Earth's atmosphere not all meteors are consumed in their collision with the Earth's atmosphere occasionally a solid part of a meteor reaches the Earth then it is called a meteorite large ones form holes called craters this meteor crater in Arizona is a mile wide and several hundred ft deep it was formed thousands of years ago by the fall and explosion of a meteorite probably more than 100 ft in diameter some of the craters on the moon probably were formed this way only a few large meteorites reach the Earth each year most like these weigh a few pounds though many meteorites have been found in many parts of the world most are of two types there are Stony meteorites that look like ordinary rocks and there are metallic or iron meteorites that are mainly composed of iron and nickel a few meteorites are combinations of the Rocky and metallic types tiny meteorites that never get through the atmosphere can now be studied in space with this type of device it is a Space Capsule designed to investigate what are called micrometeorites when such a capsule is in space paddle arms open exposing surfaces that will record any collisions with micrometeorites capsules such as this are carried into space by Rockets recovered on Earth the capsules have brought back evidence that the Earth is surrounded by a vast cloud of micrometeorites too small to do serious damage to a space vehicle periodically the Earth's orbit carries it through swarms of these tiny particles resulting in meteor showers such as the one recorded in this drawing that took place in 1833 meteors fill the sky in a spectacular display the explanation for meteor showers that recur yearly or in longer periods can be found in a third type of Wanderer between the planets comets when a comet is photographed the telescopic camera is moved to follow the comet's motion this causes the Stars to appear as little Trails on the photograph a comet is composed of an enormous gas head that is usually many thousands of miles in diameter streaming out from the head is a long tail frequently millions of miles long the source of a comet's tail is material in its head within the large head is a smaller sharply outlined nucleus as shown in this drawing probably a mass of Frozen gases and meteoric material as the comet approaches the sun it is heated by sunlight this heating thaws the Frozen gases on the surface of the nucleus releasing some of the meteoric material the gases absorb sunlight and glow pushed by the light and electrified particles from the Sun sometimes called the solar wind the gases form the long tail of the Comet that points away from the Sun some comets travel around the Sun in periods of less than 100 years While others come past only once in thousands or millions of years let's follow one of the best known of the Comets Hal's Comet along its orbit that carries it around the Sun about every 76 years the elliptical orbit of Hal's Comet as represented here extends from within the orbit of Venus on the left where it was last seen from Earth in 1910 to its farthest point in space beyond the orbit of Neptune where it was in 1948 then Hal's Comet was not much more than a nucleus of solidified gases and meteoric particles starting to fall back toward the Sun by 1970 it will have crossed the orbit of Neptune by 1980 it will have crossed the orbit of Uranus its speed is increasing by 1985 it will have passed the orbit of Saturn and be approaching the orbit of Jupiter and then rushing past it now as it approaches Earth the tail of the Comet will form as light from the sun is absorbed by the nucleus viewers from Earth around 1986 will watch the tale of Hal's Comet grow to perhaps more than 100 million miles in length then as the comet rounds the Sun and moves away tail first the tail May shrink or be blown away in the process of developing tails and losing them comets seem to release swarms of meteoric materials that follow along the same orbits in time a swarm May lag behind or move ahead of the parent Comet and gradually spread out around the full orbit it is these swarms of small particles that are believed to produce meteor showers which we see periodically while meteor showers are most likely the result of material lost from comets comets may be made of material left over after the formation of our system of planets so we've seen that sometime during the formation of the planets of our solar system a kind of debris was probably left in space revolving around the Sun this debris makes up the comets meteors and planetoids of our solar [Music] system yeah that's pretty great uh let's see what else do I got on the plate for you um huh her um so this film um is about University North Carolina uh and I believe it's a promotional film for them to kind of talk about uh them and their history uh the big news for UNCC is um they beat Duke that's a big deal beating Duke is a big deal so here it is uh in the name of Freedom [Music] enjoy [Music] to every man his chance to every man regardless of his birth his shining golden opportunity to work to be him self and to become whatever thing his manhood and his vision can combine to make [Music] him there are many roads that lead to Chapel Hill from the 100 counties of North Carolina herself from all states of the Union from all continents of the world men and women find their way to Chapel Hill to walk the brick and graveled Paths of the University perhaps from 10,000 Mi away or more to Chapel Hill a long way too long simply to read a book study a language learn to sing or write or speak or solve a formula these different people individuals all here in the country of Chapel Hill what brings them here what reason makes them send their children back perhaps from half around the world to Chapel Hill spring is a reason when the campus turns white with Dogwood following hard upon the beauty of the red Judas [Music] trees spring turns every building into something of a picture postcard with a co-ed walking through [Music] it fall is a reason on a campus of Oak W and maple leaves cover the ground the wind rustles with a Midsouth temperature informality is a reason on a campus spread out spaciously on a Hilltop this is the new medical school in hospital Kenan Stadium seats about [Music] 45,000 and grouped near the center of the campus are the dormitories classrooms Laboratories and offices with those modern facilities needed for the service of a great [Music] University one of the oldest of our buildings is south building which holds offices of the president controller and Chancellor here are decided matters of policy purpose and [Music] finance the older building is old east across the street from the Carolina Playmakers theater once the library now replaced in that function by this more imposing structure there are about 20 classroom buildings on the campus some of them more than a 100 years old they reflect various concepts of architecture a few now dated by mid-century taste many of the dormitories at Carolina are relatively new however the new ones are not generally so shaded so pleasantly isolated by years as the older ones the fraternity and sority houses are attractively planned and add a formal pattern to the [Music] camping Woolen gymnasium is one of the more complete in the South the Student Union building is graa memorial buildings for Chapel Hill Statewide extension work are also here as our headquarters for the naval Roc and the air cor reserve unit the only planetarium on a University campus is housed in the Morehead building on these steps are the best critics of University change the alumni who thoughtfully observe each structure as it is being built the main street of Chapel Hill B ERS the campus on the North complete with parking zones and soft drink signs it graduates down to the post office on one side and yields to the dominance of a towering Church steeple on the other Chapel Hill Village and campus is a quiet place to live and work here the scientist May pursue his search with approved patience his study of large subject in tiny drops of [Music] liquid is turning and revolving of formulas working discovering in a relaxed atmosphere It's Not Without Beauty experimenting with nature there is time in Chapel Hill for thinking browsing expressing not only that type of expression which carries over the sound waves of a Statewide radio network but self-expression in the design of art the feeling for balance and [Music] design cultural life in Chapel Hill is quite well-rounded by professional and student artists stage Productions are frequent and well received Chapel Hill is the drama center of the [Applause] southeast in music there are Glee clubs orchestras the North Carolina Symphony and for balance there is Recreation the University's indoor and outdoor pools are popular with students and faculty there are two golf courses and excellent tennis courts always there is instruction then [Music] practice [Music] often there are tournaments inter mural for beginners interc Colgate for the [Music] practice Carolina ranks high in almost all sports but football is King in Autumn parades are preceded by jumping students and marching bands as the more conservative watch from the sidewalks Old Chapel Hill makes way for the clash with some companion North Carolina University wake for a state or Duke or Interstate Rivals such as Tennessee Virginia Georgia not Dame and [Music] Texas at night the Torches are carried through the center of the village and across campus to the bom fire for cheers songs and speeches noon the next day brings double lines of cars on all highways patrolman waving them on students alumni friends of Carolina with a mingling of opposition supporters an average of more than 40,000 people a game stream to Kean Stadium they come to see a George Barkley or a Charlie justice fight for Carolina car no every play at Carolina is not a touchdown but often there is the spectacular run or the long completed pass [Music] oh [Music] the parade tortures cheers the winning or losing so football weekends close at Carolina the campus is shaded life is Pleasant there is a village with a spirit of Youth and an atmosphere for work not unimportant reasons for Chapel Hill but not all there is something more distinct to Carolina than all of this it concerns the opening of a door in gram memorial three men talking near the Morehead Planetarium attacking of a poster to a [Music] tree it started years ago before old East was new when the nation was bullet holes in burlap and the fire of war was cold under freedom freedom for the states but mostly for the man poet was written down plain Enough by the men of the 13 colonies and a year or so later in 1789 North Carolina opened the doors of her University the first of any of the 13 states young men found on maps the words Chapel Hill a day's ride from Ry or Hillsboro from the plantations of the North Carolina coastal plane from small farms of pedmont blidge and smokies they came to work and study under such men as Coldwell Mitchell and Swain from them came Governors and Senators a president was among them too and it All Began because of the freedom of the state but most of all the [Music] man the buildings grew in number of this first state university with freedom still in mind so a poster is tacked to an oak in this country of Chapel Hill and ballots are counted Carolina pioneered in student government which is almost as old as the university itself in interest with some students is casual with others intense as meetings of the student legislature often [Music] show the student budget amounts to over $100,000 a year cheaply for publication the yearbook University magazines and the daily tar are published without even faculty supervision there is a a bit of freedom in this too as a man named pay once said in Pennsylvania and dignity is here too for students are trusted on examination days it is a campus tradition that professors leave their classroom leave the student to their honor for those who do not recognize the honor code for those who break the few campus regulations there are student courts student judges try their peers they hold the power to suspend students from the University in legislation in courts in Administration in meetings with south building officials student government is an important element of Chapel Hill and here too is freedom with the faculty experts in their fields leaders of their students freedom of speech freedom of belief your test papers prove all men are not created equal Thomas Jefferson notwithstanding Americans consider progress in terms of washing machine and TV sets that's mhra are you any better than Socrates Mr Sims educate a man and you educate an individual educate a woman and you educate a whole family now some learned men say they do not believe in God but in evolution could not Evolution be a study of the footprints of God the important part of an oxcart is not the wheels but the idea that lasts forever M Jen anything not worth saying in PR is not worth saying poet education is not the molding of a man it is a bringing out in the man the best that God has put in you freedom of student and faculty then to that other Carolina Freedom that permits friendship between faculty and student there is lack of formality here there is mutual respect but not pretend the students problems are more important than articles to be written the research half done the papers to be graded more important than getting home to dinner on [Music] time there are many men who are remembered here the faculty of North Carolina they know that the student is more important than the routine that is established to serve him no matter how confused he may be when he arrives how lost in the careless network of buildings how difficult it may be for him to reach a decision for indeed he may not know for what he plans to register even as he walks to find the end of the registration line he may not be able to name two subjects in which he has the slightest interest regardless of this the student is not lost for [Music] long the fact that she is unsure of her classes does not surprise the veteran registar on one side of his desk is the undecided student on the other the registration details the naming of paper filing of cards stamping of dates not indecision here but the student is an individual not part of the system of course his need for work his need for care are provided by the [Music] university but the Carolina Student is not a statistic listed in the [Music] catalog statistics show the June comes every year and with it commencement on Saturday parents and guests of the graduates are invited to meet The Faculty on the north campus the chancellor is there the Deans [Music] Professor The Faculty students and parents on Sunday gathered Memorial Hall for the baloran the final challenge then the southern afternoon warms its way lazily through to evening with considerable sightseeing and picture taking for the new page in the family album the senior explains to the Freshman what the university is all about the seniors who will not be SE seeing each other for perhaps years to come wander over the brick and gravel pads for the last formal word Gathering their determination about [Music] them late on Monday afternoon seniors meet at the bell tower here there is handshaking and warm congratulations while parents Gather in Kenan Stadium waiting in the cool of the evening shifting position and glancing over their programs waiting for the procession then the faculty gathers in late [Music] Twilight what do they remember these students in the inner mind of their memory what Echo do they hear from the stage ium what distant year on what Saturday of which year what Melody will be remembered what Melody will always be remembered what sentence from what lecture are you any better than Socrates Mr the important part of an oxcart is the idea perhaps we have discovered the footprints of God there are the first bars of the alma mat we off in memory then the Stadium section is full the stage is set the flags and colors the sun moves lower as one by one and class by class they become no longer students of Carolina and become students of the larger world still groping toward freedom in [Music] maturity they did not wear robes when they came to Carolina they will not wear robes when they leave they carry deeper symbols clearly seen in the vision of their mind in their eye for truth and human values back to the farms and cities of North Carolina to all of the 100 counties back to our coastal plain pedmont industry Smoky Mountain valleys men who will lead the state that leads the South back to the north with change values back to the Far East with a word of the worth of the individual back to Europe the peaks of Switzerland and the Farms of the low countries to England France Sweden back to the Americas fan from the tip of Chile to Venezuela and up the coast to north of Mexico the Carolina men of vision yes there are many roads that lead to Chapel Hill but they go on from here and back again and the men of Carolina they will go on and we'll come back [Music] again so uh somebody found one Venezuela and then there was capsule caps capsu capsule um anyway so um you know you wouldn't see at that time period didn't seem to be Progressive but actually it was really Progressive for North Carolina um and so much so that that Jesse Helms uh hated UNCC and in fact there's a whole UNCC is under constant attack from um conservatives in the state and are totally getting pounded for what's going on there um because of this and in fact I have another film that talks about the broadcast uh WC broadcasting and somebody says oh there's a bible program that comes out of UNCC and they're like a bible program I didn't even think there was a Bible in Chapel Hill you know so that's the sediment of like how it
