that for that is that's weird I don't know what happened it was supposed to run for a while that's very strange anyways hey I'm skip Al welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show no no clowns today no calendars today yesterday there was this Serendipity that happened where it's was like well it's a leap day and I also got from two of my employees scans from cornet films three of which featured clowns so the first one was the calendar film and I was like oh well I was going to show films about calendars related to leap year uh so why don't I show that and then I was like yeah I don't really have any other good calendar footage but boy I have these two other clown films so that's where this all came from so sorry n not really uh and then if you if you join me at the very beginning of the stream which was before 1:00 uh I used some AI to generate uh calendars dress as clowns and then clowns dressed as calendar and all the clowns were mad or frowny I was like that's weird like so then I was like happy clowns dressed as calendars and then they were really happy so there you go that's what happened yesterday um it was very trolly sorry but I did want I it just felt like it all just kind of came together and one of my uh assistants was like are you doing anything special for leap year and I'm like H so there you go that's where it all came from uh this is fun with speech sounds wait a minute no it's not this is self-conscious guy enjoy it began the night of our January School play not my self-consciousness but my story of overcoming it we had a party on stage after the play oh I wasn't in the cast not me I was on the stage crew because but I I'll tell you about that later the point is somebody grabbed a spotlight and started a sort of game when the lights stopped on you you'd have to get up and make a speech Jack sure did all right but why not he was the star of the play that sort of thing was easy for him of course I wanted to do well too I wanted to to shine I started planning what I was going to say I'd wowm and then it happened there I was in in the spotlight and I felt uncomfortable and awkward and different and they were all watching me and and laughing at what at me what was I doing wrong did I look funny unaccustomed as I am to public speaking I I guess I'll just shut up and sit down it was terrible I knew it hey that was neat Marty but don't be so self-conscious about it self-conscious that was my trouble that was why I felt so queer and I begin to remember other times I'd had the same feeling I remembered giving a book report in class it was exactly the same yes as if there were a spotlight on me and everybody was watching me oh I managed to get through my report all right but I was miserable and then I remembered the first time I asked June for a date I knew just what I wanted to say but when it came right down to it yeah I felt spotless lighted again and the words didn't want to come out and she was staring at was my face broken out again and I remembered coming to try out for this play boy I really wanted a part I felt sure I could get one too until uh I'm I'm not going to try out uh uh I'd like to work on stage crew the stage crew well it was fun but it wasn't what I wanted yeah the night of the party Jack said it and I knew he was right self-conscious I felt I could never get up in front of the class or ask a girl for a date or do anything in public again yeah I was a self-conscious guy I couldn't even stay out for party oh hi Marty oh hi Jack okay say what happened to you last night uh I I didn't feel so good oh too bad boy wasn't that something when they had that Spotlight on us see I was so scared my knees were knocking I could hardly talk you you were self-conscious sure I guess everybody is sometimes everybody I guess that's right say listen I've got to get to class sure hope you're feeling better all right hold on hold on everybody everybody's self-conscious after that I began to notice other people bill for example he always seems relaxed and comfortable but a couple of years back I can remember what a self-conscious guy he was he really has overcome it then there's an she likes to play for [Music] people watching her I remembered two or 3 years ago and how terribly self-conscious she was if anyone watched her [Music] [Music] play she certainly has changed well you can get over being self-conscious the question is how it wasn't long after when I made a big discovery about how to overcome self-consciousness I was helping Jack with his ping pong game he hadn't been playing very long but he was learning and doing right well then Hank and bill came in and hung around watching and suddenly it seemed as though Jack was feeling on the spot he started fumbling and then he quit now what made Jack suddenly feel self-conscious was it because he didn't play well I wasn't self-conscious about pingpong why the difference and then well I had to talk to Jack had an idea about self-consciousness everybody wants to show up really well you want people to think you're pretty good but then you start thinking about yourself how everybody's watching you what you must look like to them and then you make a mess of it sometimes but usually you don't you just think you do but look if if you can do something really well then you're more confident self-consciousness doesn't bother you quite so much if I could do more things well you going to try out for the class play in April I guess so me too only this time I'm really going to try out well all right Marty Hansen hello Marty are you going to help us out on the stage crew again this time well thanks but I this time I really want a part in the play well that's fine why don't you go ahead and read some lines for me when I am in trouble eating is the only thing that consoles me indeed when I am in really great trouble as anyone who knows me in boy I really had to fight self-consciousness then but I knew that was the only way I'd ever be good enough you know I got a part I practiced a lot I figured it was like the ping pong deal if I could become skillful I wouldn't be so scared of it it was easy alone and finally I got so it wasn't too hard with my family I'd forget about myself and just think about doing it well at rehearsal with the other kids I could try another idea turning the spotlight onto someone else thinking about other people and telling myself I wasn't so important and it worked part of the time but when it came my turn to speak then where could I turn the spotlight While We're stopped let me remind you all of something you know as we go through these thingses you should try to keep the whole situation in mind because you know after all what other people are thinking and doing is just as important as what you're doing will you take those lines again keep the whole situation in mind there was an idea would it work at the present moment I'm eating muffins because I'm unhappy besides I am particularly fond of muffins why I cheat them they were laughing but now I knew they were laughing at the situation not at me yes it really helps to develop skills so I can concentrate on what I'm doing instead of how I'm doing it it helps to think of other people and remember that I'm not so important and it helps to turn that Spotlight on the whole situation then I can almost forget to be self-conscious almost is right I'm getting closer now cuz I'm getting more and more practice in turning the spotlight onto the situation as a whole it helps in class to too when I feel self-conscious I remember that the class isn't interested in me but in what I have to say well there it is I still feel a little self-conscious at times but by concentrating on others by doing my best to make the whole situation easier I overcome my own self-consciousness it helps me enjoy being with people and I think it helps people enjoy being with me it could help you too couldn't [Music] it so we had found the uh raw footage of that and uh which didn't have sound so it's great that we found the uh a print of it um wow lot to unpack there and I'm wondering if this is like the call it self-conscious guy uh kind of like Shy Guy shy guy was that early um cornet film with uh uh what's his name Dick York in it um playing a shy guy who figures out how to fit in obviously this was made later um but it seems to be similar uh so some of you are going to be or are in the midst of um pretty serious winter weather today it's like spring here in Ry which means that um pollen's coming out which is why my throat is kind of rough but and my eyes are irritated yeah I love it I love this whole pollen thing but uh some of you are are going to be facing some crazy uh winter weather or just crazy weather as this cold front mov moves through uh so here is a film called Safety and winter enjoy [Music] being weatherwise means knowing how to stay safe in any kind of weather winter is fun but it's harder to do things safely in Winter because of the snow and ice and the cold for instance when bub needs to blow his nose he stops walking in order to get out his handkerchief then he can give his whole attention to walking safely he's weatherwise and so is his sister Helen they know many things to do for safety and winter watching out for slippery places and stopping well back from the curb out of danger from cars that might skid e muffs and mufflers make it harder to hear and see so you have to be extra careful before crossing a street gashes or overshoes are a good idea because they keep your feet warm and help keep you from slipping and icy or wet places heavy clothes feel mighty good out in the cold and wind but when you come in get your wraps off quickly do you know why gashes and over shoes are unsafe when worn in the house setting is fun but it can be dangerous let's join these boys and girls and see what we can find out about how to play safely taking turns is one way to prevent accidents a sled doesn't always go where you want it to go so it's smart to leave each Rider a lot of room a good Hill for sledding is a hill with no rocks or stumps or trees and that pole at the bottom has been covered with a thick padding of straw now what do you do when you reach the bottom you get up and get out of the way that's just playing fair with those waiting to slide down and playing fair is always a part of playing safe Judy's turn will be next you know why she's waiting don't you there now Judy can go and she knows she can enjoy her ride in safety there's another reason this hill is safe it's far away from streets and roads away from the dangers of traffic you may not have a special Hill like this for sledding but you can follow the same safety practices to make sledding anywhere more fun for instance here's another safe place the police department has closed this street to traffic today it's just for sledding Johnny has just turned out a fr friends offer to let him hitch onto his car Johnny knows it's not safe to Hitch a sled onto anything just use it for coasting Bullseye throwing snowballs is David's favorite winter sport now some friends want him to join them in a snowball fight he likes the idea but is this a good place for their game what about the danger of breaking windows in these houses or smashing glass in automobiles or hitting people passing by no they couldn't have a really good fight here this is better away from things here's a wise thing to do before snowballs start flying now what do you know about how to have fun with snowballs and still be safe let's watch how David makes snowballs he doesn't pack them hard he just Scoops up the light snow and toss the Snowballs that break apart easily when they hit someone he never aims at anyone's face or head when he throws and of course none of the boys put ice or Stones inside their snowballs that just isn't good sportsmanship Janie enjoys watching the boys play do you think they'll throw any snowballs at her no they won't it isn't safe to throw a snowball at someone who doesn't expect it throwing snowballs can be fun if you play fair with your friends and play in a safe place away from houses and cars do do you know the first rule for being weatherwise about ice skating the sign says yes skating today when you skate at a protected place and obey the signs you know the skating will be good and there's no danger of your falling through ice that's too thin Tom and Sally are getting set to enjoy the fun let's look at their skates see the covers that protect the blade blades they also protect Sally and Tom from the sharp blades Sally wants to be sure the blades have not come loose and of course both Sally and Tom wear skates that fit them properly and Lace them good and tight you can't enjoy skating if you're limping around on skates that are loose or wobbly and you want to be sure you don't leave the laces dangling loose to fall under the blades and trip you of course the blade covers come off before you start skating Oh that girl should have kept going in the same direction as the others to prevent accidents Tom's a beginner he could take a lesson in leaning forward and bending his knees a little to help keep his balance a friend wants Tom and Sally to join in a game so they move away to another part of the skating area where they can have their game without spoiling the fun of the others be weatherwise are you let's find out test yourself now what do you know about dressing for cold weather about safe on the street do you remember the rules we follow so that everyone can have more fun what else do you know about safety in using your sled do you know how good sportsmanship applies to throwing snowballs do you know when and where and how to ice skate winter is fun and it can be even more fun if your weather was for [Music] safety I can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything [Music] okay hey get down from there [Music] now hey turn it over what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be minc meat by now what have I told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well I told him not to to touch anything all right I guess I wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger meet a man you ought to know I used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger [Music] J I was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my T box and I'll take myself a look I climbed up on a doer with my mechanic's Pride said you can keep it running friend while I poke around inside shake hands with danger meet a guy you ought to know I used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger Joe although I learned a lesson I forgot it soon enough the Nicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones I was tough till another morning I was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me three finger jaill I've seen mechanics burnning I've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute I've seen them lose it all I've watched them courting trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the [Music] [Applause] Blues [Music] shake hands with [Music] danger she has [Music] [Music] around around [Music] inside [Music] around hands dang [Music] inside shake hands with danger and some friends I Used to Know compared to them I'm lucky to be just three finger [Music] [Laughter] Joe um so I'm going to have to replace this cable like I think that's what's causing the problem is it's got a uh it's got a bad cable uh bad USB one cable that's hooking to this really nice microphone but for some reason recently it's uh I go to hit uh unmute and then the power just drops out and then it takes a little while to get OBS to recognize the microphone so I was debating whether or not I would show Shake the shake hands with danger uh reenvisioning by Scott Phillips uh if you like Scott Phillips he uh he's a friend of my wife and myself uh he's a school teacher and he's doing a show I think at the pin hook on Saturday night him and some other he's a singer songwriter but anyways him and a bandmate came up with this more or Dancy um he kind of thought a lot about uh rocket Horror Picture Show uh um in in creating that song and this was uh basically they were raising money to put out an album and my wife for my birthday paid to have that done any who uh so behind me I have a film scanner set up and uh this one is about the net so wow that's surprising uh the net so here we go basic net mending [Music] enjoy [Music] to the crew of a commercial fishing vessel there's nothing to match the satisfaction of hauling in a full net over the side for what comes up in the net is the payoff and this payoff looks big [Music] but sometimes the only reward for long hours and hard work is an empty net that's tough luck tougher yet when you realize that it might have been avoided with a properly mended net a few holes are found nearly every time the net is brought in that's why the man who can mend Nets properly rates high on every fishing vessel each tear may be a little different from the last one but the basic mending procedures are the same supporting the net just above the tear using the proper tools trimming the hole filling the needle and mending the hole it makes no difference if The Mending is done on the deck of the vessel or in a net Loft the job is the same when a tear is found support the damaged sections to do this stretch the net so that the meshes line up straight twine in straight twine one pair of bars is lined up side by side while the other two bars are separated by a loop if the net is stretched the wrong way it cannot be mended properly this is known as cross twine cross twine can be identified because Loops separate both pairs of bars with the net hanging straight twine gather several meshes about two rows above the top line of the hole you're now ready to support the damaged part of the net the S hook made of stiff wire is one of the many devices used for this purpose insert one end of the hook through the gathered meshes and the other end through the measures above for support it takes a good sharp knife to trim the whole right there is only one kind of knot in a machine- net in mending the knot is called by different names depending on the number and location of the bars attached to it with one bar cut the knot becomes a three- legger this is either a starting or a finishing point in mending with two bars cut and the ends pointing upward the knot is referred to as a pickup with two bars cut and both ends pointing downward the kn is referred to as a full mesh with two bars cut one end pointing upward the other down the same knot is called a cider begin trimming at the starter three-leg cut off excess length on the Tor bar trim the full mesh by cutting the stump there are two ways to cut stumps on full meshes depending on which bars it'll be return retained if the bars to be retained are separated by a loop to remove the stump cut the loop if the bar is to be retained are not separated by a loop make the cut using one side of the stump as a bumper to avoid injuring the mesh Loop all the stumps on full meshes are cut by one of these two methods cutting stumps eliminates bulky knots which create irregular mesh sizes uneven strains and eventually damage in trimming the ciders only long torn ends are shortened ciders are the side boundary markers of the hole trimming serves two purposes it eliminates bulky knots and sets the pattern for mending the pattern for mending now begins to take form trimming proceeds around the hole from the starter three leer until the lowest level of the tear is reached after reaching this point trimming begins again at the starter three- leer but this time proceeds in the opposite direction pickup meshes may be found anywhere in the trimming procedure particularly on the lowest row of meshes on the edge of the tear cut the stumps from pickup knots using the same method as for full meshes in this case however the lower bars of the knot are retained trimming is completed when a finishing three leer is formed in the bottom row of mesh at the edge of the hole with trimming completed select the proper needle a well equipped neatly arranged twine box helps speed the job needle size is determined by the size of the mesh and the net now select the twine twine size should always match that of the original net in this case white untreated twine is used to to show more clearly The Mending procedure to fill the needle hold the short end of the twine firmly against the shank and wind the long end over the tongue through the heel over the tongue on the other side and back through the hill rocking the needle each time the twine goes through the hill with a little little experience the needle can be filled in a very short time when the needle is filled cut the long end of the twine begin mending at the starter three leer shuttle the needle under one bar of the starter three leer allowing the twine to slip by until about one in of the end extends from the knot twist the end against two bars of the three- legger form a loop with the other end then shuttle the needle upward through the loop and pull downward to tighten to keep the size of each new mesh the same use the fingers of the left hand for measuring shuttle the needle Between the Bars of the mesh from underneath grip the junction form a loop shuttle the needle under the two two bars of the mesh and through the loop then pull downward to tighten this completes the first mesh knot all the others in this row are made in the same way use fingers for measuring shuttle the needle from underneath grip tightly at the junction form a loop swing the needle under the bars and through the loop pull to tighten whenever mending proceeds from left to right the needle is shuttled from underneath the mesh completion of the first row of meshes is indicated when The Cider on the right is reached to make the cider knot grip the lower bar with thumb and forefinger now pull The Mending twine tight against the knot and swing the needle under the upper bar and Over The Mending twine form a loop shuttling the needle under the upper bar and the twine and over the twine Loop tighten the hitch and the knot is complete in this row of meshes the needle must be shuttled from above when mending in the opposite direction as in the first row of meshes the needle is inserted from underneath as mending proceeds from right to left shuttle the needle from above otherwise the procedure is the same shuttle the needle from above check mesh size form a loop shuttle the needle under both bars of the mesh and through the loop tighten the knot when The Cider on the left is reached grasp the lower bar with thumb and forefinger make a loop shuttle the needle Under The Mending twine and the upper bar The Cider then through the loop and tighten in reversing Direction This Time a new factor is encountered the pickup mesh always look carefully for pickup meshes after each cider to make this knot shuttle the needle from underneath pulling the twine until the bars are equal in size form a loop pass the needle under both bars of the pickup mesh and through the loop tighten the knot by by pulling upward as there are no other pickup knots in this row proceed with the meshes until the Cider on the right is reached always remember when making mesh knots from left to right start by shuttling the needle under the mesh bars cider knots are very important they signify the end of a roll and indicate a change in the direction of mending direction of mending determines whether the needle is inserted into the mesh loop from above or below weaving from right to left the needle is always inserted into the loop from above if this is not done the twine will not line up properly and the meshes will be twisted never pass a cider without first looking for pickup measures in fact pickup meshes may occur anywhere in the tear particularly on the last row of meshes near the finishing three-leg for to make the finishing knot on the three- legger shuttle the needle under two bars of the three- legger for former Loop pass the needle under the bars of the upper mesh and the new twine and through the loop to make doubly sure that the finishing knot will be secure make another hitch the mended section is now as strong and serviceable as any other part of the net although Nets are now made almost entirely by Machine repairing them is still reserved to the human mind mind and the skilled human [Music] [Applause] [Music] hand [Music] what's happening in Mrs Barry's class today everyone seems quite busy either reading or writing they are learning about kinds of communities cities and towns and Villages writing and reading are things that we do by ourselves doing things by ourselves is one way of getting things done Mrs Barry is reminding the class that one of the things they've learned about communities is that people work together to get things done in class there are certain things that we can get done too by working together what projects might the class do by sharing the work well Bob is suggesting that they could all build a model of a small community Arthur thinks that they might make a large painting showing how the town gets its milk telling their ideas is part of planning together planning together is part of working together an has an idea she's collected quite a few pictures they show people working at different jobs perhaps the class might make an exhibit of such pictures it would show many kinds of workers in the community Bob is listening it helps to listen to the ideas of others Anne is usually quiet but now she is telling her idea quiet people often have good ideas if we take time to listen to them Barbara has something to say too she thinks that the class might write a report about communities Mrs Barry thinks that all their ideas are good ones which does the class like best Jack says that writing the report is a good idea but he thinks it's something we can do better by ourselves what about doing the painting Mrs Barry remembers that they worked on a painting last week how many are interested in doing another now only two what about the other ideas the model and the picture exhibit would they like to work on these all right that's what they'll do now they have to decide where they can work this part of the room seems like a good place these tables can be used for the model of the community this table for the workspace for the picture exhibit and this board for pinning up the pictures now the boys and girls will plan their work and decide what things they will need for the project Bob and Arthur are getting little cartons that will be used for the homes and the buildings of the model Nancy has colored paper that will be needed for water and grass and streets Ruth has the paints and brushes for painting the homes and buildings they'll need paste and scissors too here are cardboard and thumbtacks for putting up the pictures an has her pictures and they'll find more on these old magazines so the work is started it's a few days later and the boys and girls have done a lot of work on their project Bob and Arthur are working on the downtown section of the model Jack and Ruth on the neighborhood Nancy is working on the park the work has been divided so that each boy and girl has about the same amount to do Jack is doing the streets and grass of the neighborhood while Bob has made the streets of the downtown section Arthur is working on the neighborhood houses he doesn't mind that the class didn't follow his suggestion to make a painting he is doing his best with this job next time maybe his suggestion will be used Ruth is putting the finishing touches on a house so by sharing the work and by sharing ideas the work is being done faster and better and it's more fun too but look the stre stre of the downtown area are one color and the streets of the neighborhood another when the different parts of the model are placed together that won't look right jack talks it over with Bob perhaps Mrs Barry can help solving problems together is part of working together Mrs Barry asks the boys what they think should be done Bob has made the dark streets and Jack has made the light colored streets but perhaps the dark color is more like streets really are together they decide that Jack is going to change the color of the neighborhood streets so that they will match the downtown streets let's see how the picture exhibit is coming along Anne and the others have been selecting more pictures of workers from the magazines and pinning them up oh Joan has brought an a picture that she found in a magazine at home an says she likes it better than the one she planned to use so she'll use Joan's picture ANS found out that Tom can use scissors very well so he's been cutting out most of the pictures they'll need he's also collected quite a bit of Waste Paper he'd better get rid of it Frank has some spare time and we'll help him two can tidy up faster than one like Tom everyone is trying to do a good job after the pictures have been cut Frank mounts them but Frank's all out of Paste can he borrow some Arthur is almost finished with his pasting perhaps Arthur can lend his paste to Frank working together includes sharing things Helen is putting up the pictures she's getting help too an is making sure that the pictures are lined up straight when we work together we combine our ideas and our efforts and we get more done the pictures and their exhibit show that many things in communities are also done by people working together the mailman is one community worker we depend on him for he delivers our mail the clerk helps us with our packages the bus driver takes us where we want to go the doctor helps us keep well the policeman keeps us safe yes people in communities do help one another and now the picture exhibit is almost completed and so is the model the boys and girls have done these things by working together everyone is proud of the work the different parts of the model fit together to form a whole [Music] Community everyone has had a share in the project there are some things we do alone but there are other things we do better if we work together when we work together we help others and others help [Music] us all right I've had it this is going away this Cable gone this is how we uh Mark that a cable is bad we just cut it up and throw it in the trash um I don't know what was going on with that but that was incredibly frustrating I know for you but also for me where I'm just going blah blah blah blah blah and I look and I'm not seeing any levels the mic isn't responding or um thank you for tuning in today very much appreciate your eyeballs and your comments and um I should say that uh um I got an email saying that a uh medical procedure that I'm having done is being done 7 days early and it's a good thing I found it because I didn't get any notification from anybody else except for this tiny weird email so I'm not going to be here Monday it's not a big scary thing it is hopefully going to clear up all the surgery and the weird stuff that I've had going on if I ever see you in person you can ask me about it and I'll tell you specifically what happened but anyways um yeah so I should be actually out of the procedure by the time the show happens but I'm also um probably going to be still coming off of anesthesia so that might be uh might be hilarious for you but not for me anyhow um everybody have a great weekend if you like what you saw you can hit the Thumbs Up Button the like button you can also donate via the super thanks button which is in uh YouTube chat um subscribing helps us uh if you haven't before and also hitting that Thumbs Up Button helps us because um yeah our viewing has has dropped on YouTube and we get money based on that um anyways you can also donate via kfi.com avgeeks or patreon.com avgeeks those are great ways to support us but just showing up just seeing your name in our uh comments list is great uh I will have a pre-recorded show ready for you on Monday but I won't be back until Tuesday so everybody enjoy your March weekend if you're in North Carolina you can early vote for the primary or you can vote on Tuesday generally primaries don't have anybody showing up so go do it make a choice we have a lot of crazy people running for office in North Carolina and I don't know your voice of reason might help that's that's my Soap Box okay um Everybody take care and we will see you soon uh and um I'm going to leave you with some uh nightmares clown images enjoy that that I
