is for is for so was it worth all those still images to get to that uh that fighting at the end yes it was in my mind it was and I I like how we went um Holy Grail very quickly uh I'm skip alimer welcome to the AV geks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and that was some raw footage out takes uh from cornet and um so we never know what we find there and that was a an interesting kind of grab bag of stuff so big fan of those uh all right so on the scanner behind me I have a film set up the die is cast enjoy [Music] for the casting of metals goes back to extremely early times in the ancient Kingdom of ER in Mesopotamia metal workers cast copper and gold as long ago as 3000 BC syrians knew the secrets of casting in bronze the earliest moldes for casting in metal Were Made of Stone or baked clay in Egypt the gold castings of the pyramid age have never been excelled for craftsmanship the Greeks and Romans made Hollow castings with a core of a porous sand compound the Romans took their metal craftsmanship to Britain which became a successor to the ancient art of metal working these metal crafts follow the trade routes to America but the methods of metal casting remained essentially the same slow laborious costly the sear purd or lost wax process is a good example the object to be cast is first made of wax with attached funnel and Runners a temporary container is formed around the object and a mixture of of plaster of Paris and silica sand is poured in around the wax sculpture to form the outer mold after the plaster hardens the outer container is removed and the mold is placed in a Kill the heat of the kill evaporates the wax through openings in the mold since no trace of the wax remains after the kill is fired this casting method is descriptively called The Lost wax process after the mold is removed from the kill it is put into a sheet metal container and surrounded with tightly packed sand this reinforces the mold so that that the molten metal can be poured into the opening at the top filling the cavities left by the evaporated wax when the metal hardens the sand is removed and the mold broken care must be taken not to hit the metal object while destroying the mold the rough casting needs to be cleaned and Polished then the artist's original concept sculptured in wax becomes a gleaming metal object this ingenious ancient process is still used for casting art objects dental gold inlays and extremely accurate industrial investment castings but since the mold has to be broken it is only good for one use it was the coming of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century with its emphasis on machinery and mass production that gave metal casting the impetus to change now there was a growing interest in methods for making large quantities of metal castings quickly precisely and economically no longer were the castings simple objects of art sometimes a number of complicated parts were needed to make a variety of machines this led to some new ideas in casting a major advance in casting came with the use of Steel for the mold by making the mold in two parts it could be opened and brought tightly together again this method makes it possible to use the same mold many times with the use of pressure the liquid metal is forced into the dye and can fill almost any shape of cavity before it solidifies or freezes the result of these new methods was the modern process called diec [Music] casting its first true application took place in 1884 with the Maller Lina type machine in 19006 automobile bearings were being made by diec casting today diec castings are found in a wide variety of products ranging from typewriters to space vehicles entire factories depend largely on die castings like the rosenville Ford Motor Company plant near ipsilanti Michigan among a variety of Automotive die castings made here are components for alternators windshield wipers speedometers and carburetors these diecast parts are supplied applied to Ford assembly plants throughout North America the dyes that make these parts must be repaired to correct any damage from wear or breakage they must fit together perfectly and be designed so that none of the cast metal adheres to the surfaces of the dye the dyes are fitted into machines or presses which vary in size according to the dimensions of the part to be made the type of machine depends upon the metal to be used when metal with a relatively low melting point is used such as zinc a hot chamber machine is utilized soall because the hot molten metal goes directly from the reservoir into the D cavity a pump submerged in the liquid metal forces it into the dye at 1,000 lb of pressure per square in the force needed to drive the molent metal into every part of the cavity when the dyes close toggle clamps hold the two parts together diecasting machines are rated according to the amount of clamping Force which can be exerted often several tons when the die opens the part is removed with the aid of ejector pins which move outward pushing the part out of the dye after the metal is ejected from the mold it is still very hot the part may fall into a tank of water onto a conveyor belt where it is sprayed by a number of water jets or be removed by a robot sh between Cycles while the dye is in the open position it is cleaned by a jet of air and sprayed with a lubricant this not only prevents sticking but also makes the dye last longer producing Parts with fewer defects for Metals with a higher melting point such as aluminum magnesium and Brass a cold chamber machine is used on some machines the metal is ladled by hand into a chamber just ahead of the Piston pressure is then applied to the Piston which Rams the liquid metal into the dye an automatic cold chamber machine has a number of advantages over those in which the metal is ladled by hand it produces more parts in less time which lowers the production costs it delivers an accurately measured amount of metal there is less wastage in the shot tubes that channel the molten metal into the dye and it is safer properly made a die casting should be free of internal defects have outstanding surface appearance need little or no finishing and be within close tolerances porosity is one of the defects that can occur when excessive gas is dissolved in the molent metal porous Parts might leak in use a source of trouble if they are meant to be airtight porosity can generally be prevented from developing in the Melting Furnace where the metals are liquefied porosity due to gas bubbles in the molten metal is usually minimized by fluxing stirring a powder into the liquid another possible defect of die castings is called a cold shut if a machine has been inoperative and the dyes are cold when it starts making Parts the first few die castings may be marred with incomplete fill the diecaster must see that his machine is in good working order and that he himself follows the recommended procedures of operation when several small parts are diecast at the same time they emerge from the machine connected by a biscuit these are formed by the channels in the Dy through which the metal is forced into the mold cavity for each part made these multic castings go to a trimming machine which first trims and then separates them trimmings biscuits defective parts and other scrap is collected in bins and taken to The Melting Furnace for remelting the Salvage of metal scrap is one of the economic factors to be considered in the process some complexly designed metal parts used in automobile engines as we have seen could not be made nearly as quickly and efficiently by any other process than that of diec casting but diec casting is not the answer to all manufacturing needs its use depends upon the answers to several questions is an adequate machine available to manufacture the particular part will the diecast metals have mechanical or chemical properties to suit the intended use is it the most economical method of manufacturer because in so many cases the answer to these questions is yes diec casting has become one of the most important manufacturing processes in use today and undoubtedly will continue to play a major role for a long time to come fortunately that film was marred by its uh narration narration was not very interesting um the occasional drum circle soundtrack was was kind of interesting though um I was like oh huh um what's also interesting is so this came in a box of films uh from a community college uh from the coast of North Carolina and on it uh I don't know if you see the title is rug rats in Paris but wait a minute it's really the die is cast so for some reason some of these have erroneous feature film titles on them I don't know what they were trying to accomplish or how they were being used but they were these were all destined for the dumpster and an archist was like hey I think I know a guy who'd be interested in these so yeah and I was interested in these These are pretty great um yeah if if that film was just the soundtrack man I'd be all into that and it's uh it's one of the things that I watch before I go to bed to kind of clear my head to kind of calm me down is uh assembly line footage or uh it's almost all Japanese or Korean uh and people making things or manufacturing things and unfortunately some of them have like a soundtrack like music which is really annoying because I just want to hear the tap tap tap tap tap that's the stuff I like and that was one of the things last year that we tried to make was the uh um assembly line sleep machine where it was using um sounds from factories and I I couldn't quite make it work I had all the assembly footage but most of it does not have soundtrack of what it sounds like so we put in a different soundtrack and some people loved it and some people really really hated it so um anyways that's something and we might revisit at some point uh this year try to find a better example uh but in the meantime Let's uh what are we watching let's watch biology in today's world enjoy [Music] when we study biology we are studying one of the most comprehensive of all the Sciences biology remember includes the study of all living things plants and animals plants make up a major division of study called botany botany in turn includes many areas of more specialized study for example mushrooms and other fungi are studied in an area called micology the microscopic plants we call bacteria are studied in bacteriology Garden varieties of plants are studied in Horticulture while field plants are studied in Agronomy another of the many specialized areas of Botany the other major division of biology is zoology zoology also includes many specialized areas of study it includes the study of farm animals Animal husbandry the the study of fish ethology and the study of insects called entomology so there are many specialized areas of biology let's see how we ourselves benefit from these areas for after all we are living things and we depend in many ways on other living things let's consider three important areas in which we depend on living things the production of food the processing and preservation of food and the maintenance of Health today the production of food depends to a large extent on the science of biology the production of food crops has been increased in many ways through knowledge of biology such knowledge may come from experiments in which plants are grown in soil containing Radioactive fertilizer the Geer counter is used to tell how the fertilizer is being absorbed by the plants such information leads to the production and use of improved chemical fertilizers this in turn leads to increased crop yields providing more food for all of us crops we know must be protected from insects that cause damage to plants by studying the life habits of insects biologists have developed many ways to control harmful insects we've been taught to protect birds and other natural enemies of insects we've been provided with new insecticides to protect crops against insect pests and we've been shown methods for destroying certain insects in the the stagnant Waters in which they breed another way that biologists have helped us to improve food production is by the controlled breeding of plants such as this corn by Crossing selected parent strains of corn it has been possible to produce the larger and more vigorous hybrid corn grown on farms today plants may be bred for resistance to disease desirable taste early ripening of fruit large size or any one of many other characteristics that will result in improved food production food production is also improved by the selective breeding of animals cattle bred to give maximum production of milk cattle bred to give maximum production of prime beef poultry bred to give maximum production of eggs are further examples of increased food production through our knowledge of biology while biologists help us increase the production of food the processing and preservation of food is an area equally important to our welfare our knowledge of the preservation of food has come to us largely through the work of bacteriologists food spoilage we know is caused by bacteria and other microorganisms the growth of bacteria can be controlled by such methods as refrigeration and freezing cooking and canning and dehydration the removal of water newer methods of food preservation are being developed by biologists in experiments in in which foods are exposed to Atomic radiation here Foods in a metal tube are being lowered into a pool containing radioactive materials such an experiment enables biologists to determine the effectiveness of radiation as another means of preserving food in food preservation the object is to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and other microorganisms in food processing however some kinds of bacteria can be helpful when certain bacteria are added to milk for example it coagulates forming curds these curds can be processed into cheese this is another of the many ways in which biology AIDS Us in the processing and preservation of food now let's consider how the maintenance of our health benefits from biology we know that centuries ago people had few effective means of combating contagious diseases such as smallpox chera or Bubonic plague Today We Live with little fear of communicable diseases as a result of discoveries in biology we are protected by vaccines and antitoxins which give us immunity against such dread diseases as smallpox diptheria and polio the use of animals has made it possible to develop effective antitoxins and vaccines biologists have also developed antibiotics and synthetic drugs with continuing research biologists are developing new drugs to Aid in the continuing fight against against disease to prevent the spread of disease we know that our water supply must be continually checked for Purity the disposal of garbage and other wastes must be rigidly controlled and public eating places must be inspected regularly these services are generally under the supervision of trained biologists much of the work done in biology today may be classified as pure research studies whose practical values may be realized only in the future working with modern equipment such as the electron microscope biologists are gaining a better understanding of the chemical nature of life itself and of the molecular processes that occur in living cells improved modern equipment is aiding biologists in developing many areas of research research that in the future will bring us ever increasing knowledge of the human body and human health and so biology is continually contributing to our welfare especially in these three areas the production of food the processing and preservation of food and the maintenance of health of course like the students we see here most of us will continue to learn about biology and as we do we will become more and more aware of day-to-day contributions of biology contributions that affect our health our careers and the general welfare of the world in which we [Music] live I'm just going to shake my head um that film came out a long time ago and the concept of being safe you know because we have these drugs and these things that we do um they didn't talk about uh ignorance in social media um they didn't realize that um that could affect public health and it's breaks my heart anyways uh so this next film where is it it's right here yeah uh we're going to watch uh Star Trek insurrection or are we let's see what it actually is enjoy [Music] [Applause] these men are in conference a group problemsolving process that has its origin in the dawn of civilization when tribal leaders gathered together to discuss ways of providing for the rest of the village group discussion is a process of sharing ideas or solving problems together in an organized way I have to stress organization because without it group discussion can turn into a verbal freefor all respons you don't this group lacks a Cooperative attitude and cooperation is necessary for a successful group discussion create a congenial atmosphere get comfortable chairs and sit in a circle this allows the participants to converse easily if the discussion is taking place before an audience a semi circular Arrangement is helpful avoid having members sitting in profile it's important for the audience to see their faces the chairman opens the discussion by carefully phrasing the question to be discussed simply clearly and impartially the topic we're going to discuss today is whether or not the path fail system has more advantages for for the student than the present numerical marking system um to make sure that everyone understands what we're talking about I'd like to ask for definitions of the past fail system and the numerical marking system Richard um the P fail system is a system where the uh the student is graded on a past fail standard and the uh and he gets one of those two marks the members Define their terms avoiding dictionary like definitions the numerical marking system is where you get a grade from 0 to 100 65 being the minimal passing grade and then your degrees of achievement are measured from 65 up the chairman summarizes their statements and arranges them into workable definitions okay so I guess we can say that the past fail system is determined really by the teacher where the student doesn't have any specific idea of where about where he stands just that he passed or he failed whereas the numerical marking system is very specific and it tells you exactly how you're doing percentage wise they next discuss the history of the problem this requires careful judgment the panel must select only those aspects of the past history that are vital the method of organization was called the flexible progress plan generally speaking for a few scattered efforts the non-graded school has been in existence only since the end of World War II under the new Yale College Plan a 5-year experiment that will begin in January teachers will choose four designations for their students fail Pass High Pass and honors the point is that whether a man gets a 72 or a 74 just doesn't reflect his performance his knowledge or anything really Robert Carbone came to a less favor favorable conclusion in his research on non-g grading he tested 122 matched pairs of pupils in in grades four five and six from four school systems two with a non-graded primary and two without he found that the graded pupils tested higher in six areas of achievement vocabulary reading language work study skills arithmetic and total achievement this discussion is getting off to a good start all are actively participating in conversation proceeds easily the study indicated that students were almost forced to work for grade and this often led to emotional distress that could be a deterrent to real learning the report concluded that it was high time to throw out these outmoded methods the group Next turns its attention to the present evidences of the problem they must decide whether the question is serious enough to Warrant discussion what I'd like to discuss now is how this problem has affected everybody here well in my case I feel that um if I have a test and I haven't learned it learned the work in class I have to cram the night before and it becomes almost a point of memorizing it's not even you know it's just memorizing so that after the test I don't I realize that I didn't learn anything because learning for me I know that I have to has to be a slow process like building up day by day by day and if I if I was absent or if I just wasn't interested or tired during that week and I didn't get you know if I didn't really learn this cramming is necessary and it's really bad I also find myself cramming right before a test uh just so I can get you know let's say an 85 or a 95 and once I get that Mark when I get the paper back I go over the work to see just you know how I answered and which questions I got right or wrong and I find myself not knowing as much as I should know if I got a 95 you know I don't think that the past fail system is an alternative it it's not going to uh it it will maybe uh help the cramming problem a little bit by because now all you have to do is pass the test instead of being forced to get a 90 on it but I I feel that there should be a change I have found I found in my work that uh having having to study all the time just to get a high Mark has been a real problem when the chairman again summarizes the statements of the panel members this keeps the discussion moving in a logical sequence so far it seems that the problem is not so much that uh whether or not should have a pass fail system is the fact that everybody seems to be cramming before a test there have been reports by the way that there were ill effects on cramming but I'd like to ask now uh is the P fail system a remedy for cramming do you think that that's the case the panel now discusses the cause of the problem is the PF system a remedy for cramming well uh I I think it might be you know let's see if if the if the kids don't feel that they have to set a Mark or or like let's say be jewels in the class and and if you remove the concept of competition from the class work no I think competition is definitely necessary it really is you need something to go you on to make you you know want to learn I don't think if you're just said you know well you you don't have to study too much because you'll just get a pass or a fail more that that's not not enough you need more than that well then again that depends on the individual and your oh well everything depends on the individual well well then yeah but I'm just saying in my case we're talking about personal personal things now in my case um competition does inspire me to a certain extent but I think if I look at competition and if I look at Freedom I think that the freedom would I think I'd be more inspired with this and freedom behind me more than with just competition because competition right away is such an unhealthy atmosphere yeah that's what I going to ask is competition healthy and do you think it has anything to do with education observe how the chairman keeps the discussion moving by summarizing clarifying points rephrasing any ambiguous statements made by panel members and asking pertinent questions his job is important but even more important is a Cooperative well-informed panel do you feel the change is necessary is that important if it is that important then I don't see that why they shouldn't try it well not too much will change the basic school system itself won't change you know you're still going to have your own personal records it'll still be marked down like is this person a good student is he not a good student it's just will it uh eliminate the cramming problem will like will the students really be graded on their knowledge if you know the work if you've been doing all your work and and you've been studying weeks beforehand you won't have to cram so cramming isn't something that's going to be solved by a p fail system I has a point there I'm sorry if an argument begins it's the Chairman's responsibility to end the dispute and keep the discussion moving system will not do anything to relieve the cramming problem itself it really depends on the individual the panel continues to exchange ideas and evaluate opinions they avoid arguments by using tact and courtesy there will always be competition and there should always be competition well that would competition shouldn't be at such a high rate I mean when you're competing for numbers just to get you know like I have to get a higher Mark than she does it it's happen all the time in school we see it every day I see it in every class I go to well uh you know one person will say uh she's really not a small girl she only studies you know and she's she's getting a high Mark and I'm naturally smart so I should you know obviously get a higher Mark than she does they're always competing you know so much that it's really unhealthy but I feel competition is necessary in anything you do the discussion now progresses to its most important phase the solution of the problem many groups find that they cannot as yet agree upon a solution but may be able to eliminate major differences further research and discussion May ultimately lead to a mutually agreeable solution I think we've reached the point where we all agree basically on one thing that changing the system would have a great effect on how the student would work do you all agree on that okay now the problem is is what attitude do you think uh the student will take towards his work and this is also a very you know controversial so we won't bother going over that again but I would like to say one thing are there any solutions or are there any ways you could think of that we could put the new past fail system into effect or would it you know pay it all for us to do so well I'm for the a past fail system and I think it would create a more relaxed and conial atmosphere for the students to learn in but I think the only way we can find out is by experimenting with it on a larger scale than what we've experimented the reports we uh talked about today maybe like a whole state should um try the past fail system versus the numerical system and see what happens among the students I agree with Jim's uh proposal of trying to do this on a large scale this way it would almost be a test and it would be good to really prove if the system would would be would work well my own opinion I'd love to see it go through because um knowing myself and my own work attitudes I think this Freedom would be just so new and so wonderful that I think I'd have such a more greater desire to learn but it shouldn't stop there we just couldn't have pass or fail it has to we have to um change the system the present system a great deal it would have to go into entrance exams and colleges you know we just couldn't end it with high schools cuz it wouldn't fit it just wouldn't gel with the rest of the you know rest of the system as it is now this is often the longest phase of the group discussion process each solution must be evaluated is it practical to put such a solution into effect if we do have the P fail system I don't think it'll be just enough to have the marks pass and fail we'll need a mark for the superior student who really wants to be recognized so I think we should have a pass fail and outstanding let's say in honors so that way everyone is recognized when they finally reach an agreement the chairman with the aid of the panel summarizes the most important aspects of the solution so far the solutions that have been discussed is that we should uh test the past fail system Statewide also that by testing it also include the fact that the students would have a chance to prove whether they're outstanding or honor students besides passing or failing the course uh I suggest that we form a committee this group has the power to put their solution into action they will select several individuals or a committee to put the plan into effect and if necessary provide the committee with funds group discussion plays a vital role in our society today the daily operations of business education and government are directed by groups of people meeting as committees boards and councils we can all take an active part in society by learning to observe facts formulate opinions and exchange ideas freely within the framework of one of civilized man's most effective social tools group [Music] discussion have a bunch of the teenagers debate it's um passing inting um let's see I'm not sure if I showed this yesterday in fact I so I don't think I'll show it um what we got see if I got one more thing I can show you today um I appreciate you guys tuning in um and watching all this new stuff that we got um some of it is fascinating some of it is not so great uh let's see how long this is yeah let's do this I don't think we've watched it [Music] um this is what we do click click drag click click drag click all right so this is uh food the food cycle and food chains [Music] enjoy [Music] one of the first facts we learn in the study of biology is that food is necessary to the continual growth of all living things some of the chemicals in food provide energy for work and some chemicals are used for the growth and repair of the body cells the process by which food reaches any consumer may be described as a food chain this meat for example is a link in one such chain the meat came from a steer in order for the steer to develop it too needed food the food in this case was grass thus grass is another Link in this food chain which when put together might look like this grass is eaten by steer which is eaten by human let's trace a similar chain for the milk we drink for this particular food chain grass would again be a link grass is eaten by a cow which provides milk milk is consumed by a human a somewhat different chain might be traced to the honey in this jar a honey which we eat is produced by honey bees to produce this food which they also need to live and grow the bees collect nectar from flowering plants so we might represent this particular food chain as flowers honey bees human note that all three of these food chains share in common a plant link the link of green plants green plants are defined as those plants which manufacture their own food in this cross-section view the speeded up action shows how the roots of green plants extend through the soil through these roots plants receive water minerals and nitrogen compound compounds from the soil these are chemical building blocks which the plants use to manufacture simple sugars and proteins plants take in air through narrow slits in the undersides of their leaves carbon dioxide from the air is another important chemical used in the synthesis of food by green plants the energy to synthesize the chemical compounds into food comes from sunlight through photosynthesis photosynthesis takes place within specialized cells of the plants called chloroplasts which are seen moving about in this magnified view of a leaf section thus food is manufactured or synthesized by plants from nitrogen compounds minerals and water in the soil and carbon dioxide from the air both nitrogen comp compounds and carbon dioxide are provided by waste products of animal life these chemicals are used by plants to make food some animals eat plants as food while certain animals eat other animals as food plant and animal wastes are returned to the soil and air and then reused by plants to make food this is the concept upon which the term food cycle is based since green plants are the only living things that can synthesize food from chemical compounds in the soil and in the air all animal life must ultimately depend on green plants for nourishment thus green plants are almost always part of any food chain growing in this pool are a variety of green plants such plants are the basic diet of minnows the next Link in this particular food chain the minnows might then be eaten by larger fish some large fish are caught and eaten by large seabirds a pelican is a fish eater in addition to food chains in a water environment there are land environment food chains as well trees which are green plants provide food for many herbivores or plant eaters such as the squirrel here then we have two links in a food chain a squirrel eating a nut the fruit of a tree as in many food chains the next link may be formed by a carnivore or meat eater in this case a coyote eats the squirrel here's the beginning of a somewhat longer food chain a housefly eats watermelon one of the green plants a housefly is trapped and eaten by a spider the spider in turn becomes the source of food for the robin this Hawk a carnivore is part of another food chain here it is eating a mouse a link in a food chain that can be traced back to the mouse eating grains of corn which were produced by plants primarily through the synthesis of nitrogen compounds carbon dioxide and water remember though that this food chain like all the others we've seen could be made up of many other links for example the corn could have provided food for a human or an insect or a crow or the crow might eat the insect and a cat might eat either the crow or The Mouse and the hawk might eat the cat but no matter what the links in a particular food chain or the direction it takes most food chains involve green plants and enriched soil plants too require chemicals that might be called food even though these materials cannot be utilized as food by animal life but how are these needed materials returned to green plants so that they can make more food let's look again at this food chain we know that our bodies cannot utilize all the substances in the meat or other Foods we eat those substances in food which cannot be utilized for body energy or maintenance are later eliminated as waste these waste products often processed into or used directly as fertilizers serve a vital function both processed and natural fertilizer contain nitrogen compounds when these compounds are returned to the soil they are used by green plants for the manufacturer of food Natural Animal wastes or manure are rich in nitrogen compounds when these wastes are returned to the soil and the air we have gone a Step Beyond the food chain green plants provided food or an animal this animal in turn became food for another animal when essential chemical compounds contained in animal wastes are returned to the soil to be used for making food by other green plants a food chain becomes part of a larger concept the food cycle this is the NeverEnding cycle by which food materials are used again and again a food cycle is forever continuing in nature as chemical compounds are also returned to the soil through the decay of animals and plants in Decay dead plants and animals are fed upon by microscopic plants bacteria bacteria such as these draw nourishment from dead organisms and reduce them to simple chemical compounds these compounds including nitrogen compounds are subsequently released into the atmosphere and soil other bacteria which help replenish the soil with vital nitrogen compounds are found generally in legumes in nodules on the roots here seen under high magnification are nitrogen fixing bacteria in a root nodule besides nitrogen green plants also need carbon dioxide to synthesize food green plants take carbon dioxide directly from the air about them this gas too is a waste product of animal life including human life in breathing air oxygen is absorbed and carbon dioxide is eliminated so human beings and other animal life add to the supply of carbon dioxide which plants must have to make food we have seen that green plants plants are the beginning of any number of food chains and we have also seen that these chains produce waste which in turn continue the food cycle the unending pattern of Life
